Squirrel monkeys are a long-standing biomedical model, with multiple species and subspecies housed in research facilities. Few studies have examined the developmental differences between these subspecies, which may affect research outcomes. The primate neonatal neurobehavioral assessment was completed at 2 weeks of age with 279 dam-reared squirrel monkeys (188 Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis, 45 S. b. peruviensis, and 46 Saimiri. sciureus sciureus). Activity, orientation to stimuli, state control, and motor maturity scores, as well as startle responses and number of vocalizations were compared across subspecies and sex using factorial analysis of covariance (ANCOVAs) controlling for birthweight. There were no differences in orientation or motor maturity scores (p > .05) among the three subspecies or between sexes; however, there were significant subspecies differences in motor activity and state control scores. Of the three subspecies, S. s. sciureus has the lowest state control and activity scores (p < .05). They also had the most exaggerated startle response/aversion to a sudden loud noise, vocalized significantly less, and were less likely to resist restraint during the assessment (p < .05). The three subspecies of squirrel monkeys did not differ in motor development and attention to external stimuli but were significantly different in state control and activity levels. Overall S. s. sciureus were less active, agitated, irritable, and easier to console compared to S. b. boliviensis and S. b. peruviensis. This supports field research on socioecology which documented different social structure and behavior in wild populations of S. s. sciureus compared to S. b. boliviensis and S. b. peruviensis.  相似文献

Cebus apella, the black-capped or tufted capuchin, andSaimiri sciureus, the squirrel monkey, are frequently found in mixed species feeding and foraging groups throughout tropical South America and have been reported previously to show marked differences in techniques of insect foraging. Individuals of these taxa observed in central Surinam show numerous additional species-specific differences in other aspects of habitat utilization including gross dietary preferences, utilization of forest strata, locomotor behavior and arboreal support preferences.Cebus apella is more frugivorous, frequents the middle and lower levels of the main canopy, is predominantly quadrupedal and moves on medium-sized arboreal supports. By contrast, the smallerSaimiri sciureus is more insectivorous, frequents the lower strata of the forest, is more saltatory and moves on the smallest arboreal supports. Many of these differences in habitat use are interrelated and accord with patterns of habitat use seen in other primate taxa. The differences betweenCebus apella andSaimiri sciureus also accord with the types of behavioral differences frequently associated with differences in body size.  相似文献

The electrophoretic variability of blood proteins coding for up to 32 genetic loci was analyzed in 108 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus, Saimiri boliviensis, hybrids) from two captive colonies. Twelve polymorphic loci with 31 alleles are reported. The biallelic Ada* locus, G-statistics and Hardy-Weinberg genotype equilibria are useful for recognizing hybrids between S. sciureus and S. boliviensis. Backcrosses in hybrid stocks and gene flow in a natural hybrid belt, however, complicate the taxonomic diagnosis of captive specimens: S. sciureus phenotypes imported from Peru possessed the allele Ada*132, which generally characterizes S. boliviensis (or species hybrids). The complex taxonomy of Saimiri spp. Requires careful planning of captive breeding. We suggest a genetic analysis of the founder individuals before their inclusion in the European studbook population and to breed S. sciureus from Guyana separately from Peruvian imports, because the latter bear a greater risk of being taxonomically heterogeneous. Two groups of squirrel monkeys, genus Saimiri, are distinguished by external characters. The first, or Roman type, contains Saimiri boliviensis of upper Amazonia south of the Rio Marañón-Amazonas, with two subspecies of which S. boliviensis peruviensis is described as new. The second group, or Gothic type, contains three species: Saimiri sciureus with four subspecies distributed over much of tropical South America, Saimiri ustus of Brazil between the south bank Amazonian Rios Purús and Xingu, and S. oerstedi isolated on a Pacific coastal area straddling Costa Rica and Panamá. The geographic range of S. sciureus overlaps parts of those of S. ustus and S. boliviensis. Incomplete karyotypic data indicate that the diploid number of chromosomes for the genus is 44. Geographic variation is characterized by reduction from seven to six or five paired acrocentric autosomes through pericentric inversion with reciprocal increase in number of paired submetacentric or subtelocentric autosomes. Geographic distribution, behavior, sexual dimorphism including dichromatism, and hybridization are discussed. Ventral guide hairs for orientation of subprecocial newborn toward the maternal mammae are described. Distinguishing characters of species and subspecies are provided in a key. The taxons are listed with the taxonomy of each discussed, their geographic distribution plotted and mapped.  相似文献

Videolaparoscopy was used to visualize the reproductive tract contractility of the squirrel monkey, Saimiri sciureus. This technique gives information on the nature, direction of propagation, duration, and frequency of contractions. At the times of ovulation, and embryo entry to the uterus, contractile activity was observed in both the uterus and oviduct, with the latter being more frequent. The dominant direction of propagation was towards the utero-tubal junction, and simultaneous contractions were frequently observed in both uterus and oviduct. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Yearling-male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were paired with play partners either matched or different from them in age and/or sex. The frequency of play was maintained at equally high levels with both matched and mismatched partners. However, play between mismatched partners was marked by an unusually high incidence of nondirectional wrestling, a less threatening form of playfighting, and an increase in role reversal, suggesting that youngsters had considerable flexibility in the use of alternate strategies to sustain play activity with partners who were atypical for them. These results also attest to the robustness of play and its importance in the behavioral repertoire. The technique of restricting youngsters to atypical play companions is suggested as an effective means of manipulating play, with minimal disruption of other social experiences, for long-term studies of the developmental impact of social play.  相似文献

The Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus) is a markedly photoperiodic rodent which exhibits daily torpor under short photoperiod. Normative data were obtained on vigilance states, electroencephalogram (EEG) power spectra (0.25–25.0 Hz), and cortical temperature (TCRT) under a 168 h light-dark schedule, in 7 Djungarian hamsters for 2 baseline days, 4 h sleep deprivation (SD) and 20 h recovery.During the baseline days total sleep time amounted to 59% of recording time, 67% in the light period and 43% in the dark period. The 4 h SD induced a small increase in the amount of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and a marked increase in EEG slow-wave activity (SWA; mean power density 0.75–4.0 Hz) within NREM sleep in the first hours of recovery. TCRT was lower in the light period than in the dark period. It decreased at transitions from either waking or rapid eye movement (REM) sleep to NREM sleep, and increased at the transition from NREM sleep to waking or REM sleep. After SD, TCRT was lower in all vigilance states. In conclusion, the sleep-wake pattern, EEG spectrum, and time course of TCRT in the Djungarian hamster are similar to other nocturnal rodents. Also in the Djungarian hamster the time course of SWA seems to reflect a homeostatically regulated process as was formulated in the two-process model of sleep regulation.Abbreviations EEG electroencephalogram - EMG electromyogram - N NREM sleep - NREM non-rapid eye movement - R REM sleep - REM rapid eye movement - SD sleep deprivation - SWA slow-wave activity - TCRT cortical temperature - TST total sleep time - VS vigilance state - W waking  相似文献

The relationship between seasonal sexual activity, endogenous testosterone, and weight changes (fatting) in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) was assessed. Adult males were shown to have an annual rhythm in testosterone levels which coincides with peak sexual activity. Fatting was shown to occur in both adult males and adult females seasonally. However, fatting preceded both heightened sexual activity and increases in endogenous testosterone concentrations. In addition the frequency of eating and drinking do not show a consistent correlation with weight change in males and females. Therefore, the seasonal fatting response in squirrel monkeys must be due to mechanisms other than altered rate of consumption or increased production of testosterone.  相似文献

Play by young squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) may put them and other troop members at risk for predation because youngsters are noisy, separated from adults, and not vigilant when at play. In a study using separated groups of adults and 1-year-old juveniles caged outdoors, we found that adult female squirrel monkeys become more vigilant during periods of spontaneous play among juveniles. This behavioral response could be obtained with auditory cues (play vocalizations) alone. Five times as much vigilance activity was directed toward an area from which threat or disturbance was likely to come as was directed toward the juveniles themselves. These results suggest both an adaptive, compensatory increase in adult vigilance during play and a function for play vocalizations. Additional functions for play vocalizations remain to be investigated.  相似文献

In a predator–prey system, prey species may adapt to the presence of predators with behavioral changes such as increased vigilance, shifting habitats, or changes in their mobility. In North America, moose (Alces alces) have shown behavioral adaptations to presence of predators, but such antipredator behavioral responses have not yet been found in Scandinavian moose in response to the recolonization of wolves (Canis lupus). We studied travel speed and direction of movement of GPS‐collared female moose (n = 26) in relation to spatiotemporal differences in wolf predation risk, reproductive status, and time of year. Travel speed was highest during the calving (May–July) and postcalving (August–October) seasons and was lower for females with calves than females without calves. Similarly, time of year and reproductive status affected the direction of movement, as more concentrated movement was observed for females with calves at heel, during the calving season. We did not find support for that wolf predation risk was an important factor affecting moose travel speed or direction of movement. Likely causal factors for the weak effect of wolf predation risk on mobility of moose include high moose‐to‐wolf ratio and intensive hunter harvest of the moose population during the past century.  相似文献

It has been demonstrated in the rodent hippocampus that rhythmic slow activity (theta) predominantly occurs during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, while sharp waves and associated ripples occur mainly during non-REM sleep. However, evidence is lacking for correlates of sleep stages with electroencephalogram (EEG) in the hippocampus of monkeys. In the present study, we recorded hippocampal EEG from the dentate gyrus in monkeys overnight under conditions of polysomnographical monitoring. As result, the hippocampal EEG changed in a manner similar to that of the surface EEG: during wakefulness, the hippocampal EEG showed fast, desynchronized waves, which were partly replaced with slower waves of intermediate amplitudes during the shallow stages of non-REM sleep. During the deep stages of non-REM sleep, continuous, slower oscillations (0.5–8 Hz) with high amplitudes were predominant. During REM sleep, the hippocampal EEG again showed fast, desynchronized waves similar to those found during wakefulness. These results indicate that in the monkey, hippocampal rhythmic slow activity rarely occurs during REM sleep, which is in clear contrast to that of rodents. In addition, the increase in the slower oscillations of hippocampal EEG during non-REM sleep, which resembled that of the surface EEG, may at least partly reflect cortical inputs to the dentate gyrus during this behavioral state.  相似文献

Summary Sleep in adult domestic pigeons was studied by continuous 24-h recording of the EEG, EMG and EOG. Vigilance states were scored on the basis of behavioral observations, visual scoring of the polygraph records, and EEG power spectra. The animals showed a clear nocturnal preference for sleep. Throughout the dark period, EEG slow-wave activity was at a uniform level, whereas REM sleep (REMS) showed an increasing trend.EEG power density values differed significantly between the vigilance states. In general the values were highest in nonREM sleep (NREMS), intermediate in waking (W) and lowest in REMS.Twenty-four hour sleep deprivation reduced W and increased REMS, effects that are well documented in mammals. Unlike in mammals, EEG slow-wave activity remained unchanged, whereas EOG activity in W and NREMS was enhanced.Abbreviations EEG electroencephalogram - EMG electromyogram - EOG electrooculogram - SD sleep deprivation - L light - D dark - LD light dark - NREMS non rapid eye movement sleep - REMS REM sleep  相似文献

With increasing use of the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) in reproductive studies, a precise knowledge of the hormonal variations within the cycle becomes essential for timing of ovulation. The frequent utilization of laparoscopy for follicle aspiration and oocyte recovery warrants analysis of hormonal alterations.  相似文献

Hawking F. 1973. The responses to various stimuli of microfilariae of Dirofilaria corynodes, of Dipetalonema marmosetae and of unidentified species of filariae in Saimiri sciureus and Cacajao monkeys. International Journal for Parasitology3: 433–439. A study was made of the responses of the microfilariae of Dirofilaria corynodes, of Dipetalonema marmosetae and of three unknown filariae in Saimiri sciureus and of three other unknown ones in Cacajao rubicundus, to various stimuli applied to the host. These stimuli included exposure of the host to high oxygen or to hypoxia, intravenous injection of acetylcholine or serotonin, and alteration of body temperature. One of the unidentified microfilariae of S. sciureus was thermosensitive and its 24 h cycle is probably controlled by the temperature cycle of its host. The microfilaria of D. corynodes was liberated from the lungs by intravenous injection of acetylcholine and serotonin, thus resembling the microfilariae of D. immitis and D. repens.  相似文献

In Guyana, the range of the brown capuchin, Cebus apella, meets the range of its congener, the wedge‐capped capuchin, C. olivaceus, with the two species exhibiting a mutually exclusive patchy distribution. Squirrel monkeys, Saimiri sciureus, and C. apella form ubiquitous interspecific associations, but the reason remains debatable. With a large biogeographic field study, we tested the degree to which the distribution and abundance of Cebus and S. sciureus is determined by habitat type, fruit availability, and geography (i.e., determinants of the fundamental niche) relative to interspecific interactions, such as competition and facilitation (i.e., the realized niche). We used the competition between the two capuchin monkeys as a natural experiment that subjected S. sciureus to C. apella and C. olivaceus ‘treatments’. Using spatial regression models and principal components analysis, we found that S. sciureus was associated with seasonally flooded forests, and was correlated with fruit abundance and diversity (fundamental niche), but was also correlated with C. apella density even when accounting for habitat and fruit availability (realized niche). Saimiri sciureus density was unrelated to C. olivaceus density. Cebus apella was associated with a variety of forest types, but particularly included disturbed and edge habitats such as logged forests, seasonally flooded forests, and upland savanna, in addition to mature forest. Cebus apella was also positively correlated with S. sciureus density and negatively correlated with the density of C. olivaceus. In contrast, C. olivaceus avoided riparian areas and was associated with mixed‐height forests on sloped mountainous terrain. In sum, interspecific interactions such as competition between species of Cebus and facilitation between C. apella and S. sciureus were as important as habitat and fruit availability in determining the distribution and abundance of these primates.  相似文献

An evaluation of the reliability of the Emotions Profile Index (EPI), primate form, was carried out using two captive species of Old World monkeys (Papio hamadryas andMacaca fuscata) and two species (?) of New World monkeys (Saimiri sciureus andS. boliviensis). Observers, some familiar with the animals and some unfamiliar, rated members of the four groups at different times. Inter-rater reliability was high for most members of all species, but only when the observers were familiar with the animals. Assessments remained stable over at least one year.  相似文献
