Rhesus monkeys housed outdoors exhibit a distinct breeding season limited to the fall and winter months. Four groups of female rhesus monkeys, multiparous nonlactating (MNL; n = 8), multiparous lactating (ML; n = 6), primiparous lactating (PL; n = 3) and nulliparous first-time ovulators (N; n = 6) were studied to investigate the influence of age, parity, and social dominance rank on the parameters of the breeding season. MNL exhibited the longest season (146 days), and PL the shortest (70 days), with N (106 days) and ML (89 days) intermediate. PL females also had a significantly reduced percentage of normal ovulations compared to other groups. Neither body weight nor estimates of body fat were related to either the timing of the ovulatory season or the quality of ovulations within the season. Parity and social dominance rank were significantly related to the percentage of normal ovulations (r = 0.85), with low-ranking, primiparous females exhibiting the fewest normal ovulations. These data indicate that the presence of a suckling infant acts synergistically with environmental factors to determine the parameters of the breeding season. Furthermore, postpubertal females may be more responsive to those factors that terminate the breeding season, and some factor independent of body weight but associated with low social dominance rank and/or primiparity renders females less capable of normal luteal function during the breeding season.  相似文献

The influence of lactation on copulatory behaviors and ovarian functions was studied in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata fuscata) during the mating season. Three lactating females were housed in an outdoor group cage with their infants, and three nonlactating females were housed in an adjacent outdoor cage. They were mated by introduction of one of four rotationally chosen males into the females' cage, for two hours three times a week; the occurrence of ejaculatory copulations was recorded. Blood samples were collected on each observation day, and plasma levels of estradiol, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured by specific radioimmunoassays. In nonlactating females, plasma estradiol increased during the transition into the mating season, and rose to levels over 90 pg/ml for the first time on about 50 days before the first ovulation. Shortly after plasma estradiol exceeded 90 pg/ml in the nonlactating females, the onset of ejaculatory copulations occurred. They received ejaculations continuously up to the early ovarian luteal phase. On the other hand, in lactating females, there were lower levels of plasma estradiol (below 90 pg/ml) during the transition into the mating season, and they received no ejaculation during that period. Two of the three lactating females ovulated only once, and they received ejaculations only during the periovulatory period, coinciding with the rise of their plasma estradiol levels over 90 pg/ml. The remaining lactating female remained anovulatory and received no ejaculation throughout the entire mating season. These results have demonstrated that the low sexual activity of lactating females is clearly correlated with low levels of plasma estradiol due to suppressed ovarian function.  相似文献

The phenomenon of postconception mating behavior was examined in a social group of rhesus monkeys living in an outdoor compound. Periodic blood samples and daily vaginal swabs were obtained from nine females beginning several weeks prior to conception and continuing through 6 weeks of pregnancy to permit an assessment of ovarian hormonal events associated with mating during early pregnancy. Each of the females showed a discrete period of copulatory activity during the periovulatory period which ceased within several days after the 17β-estradiol (E2) ovulatory peak. In agreement with earlier reports, only a percentage of subjects (44%) exhibited a period of postconception mating, with copulatory activity beginning 19.8 (± 1.9) days following the E2 peak and continuing for 9.5 (± 1.3 days). Implantation bleeding was detected in all of the subjects with the onset 19.5 (± 0.68) days after the E2 peak. The interval between the E2 peak and the onset of implantation bleeding was similar for all females. However, the duration of implantation bleeding was significantly shorter in females who exhibited postconception mating. The females who displayed postconception copulatory activity had significantly lower mean serum progesterone concentrations (2.33 ± 0.24 ng/ml vs. 3.64 ± 0.37 ng/ml) during the period associated with implantation bleeding and copulatory behavior. Although both groups had elevated concentrations of serum E2 during this period, levels in the females who displayed postconception mating were significantly lower (173.8 ± 19.2 pg/ml vs 223.9 ± 28.8 pg/ml). These data demonstrate that the occurrence of postconception mating behavior in this environment is associated with a distinct pattern of ovarian hormonal events, and analysis suggests that differences in steroid concentrations probably account for the observed differences in implantation bleeding and copulatory behavior during pregnancy.  相似文献

Female Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) are noted for mating with multiple males and for their ability to exert mate choice. In a captive group of Japanese macaques housed at the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University, Japan, behavioral and endocrine data were combined to examine female mating strategies. During one breeding season, daily behavioral observations were conducted on females who exhibited copulatory behavior. Blood was collected from females twice weekly and their ovulatory periods estimated by analyzing hormone profiles. Females began mating shortly before ovulation, peaked at ovulation, and continued receiving ejaculations for up to ten weeks after conception. Females were more responsible than males for inbreeding avoidance with matrilineal kin. Males sometimes approached females from their own matriline, but females avoided such males and expressed mate choice behavior preferentially toward non-matrilineal males. Over the entire mating season, females did not choose non-matrilineal males on the basis of displays, dominance rank, age, weight, or weight change during the mating season. When females were likely to conceive, however, they expressed mate choice behavior toward males who displayed most frequently. Female mating strategy may include both mate choice at ovulation and other, non-procreative functions.  相似文献

Primiparous females gave birth around the same time as multiparous nonlactating females, and earlier than did multiparous lactating females. No differences in birth sex ratio were found between primiparous and multiparous females. During the breeding season following birth, primiparous mothers returned to oestrus later than did multiparous mothers, and while few primiparous mothers conceived successfully during that season, most multiparous mothers did. Primiparous females suckled their infants more frequently than did multiparous females at all ages; infants of primiparous females also made more nipple contacts per bout, and had shorter sucking bouts. When mothers came into oestrus, suckling frequency drastically increased for primiparous females, but not for multiparous females, magnifying the differences between the two groups. After the first oestrus, suckling frequency declined for all mothers, but multiparous mothers had consistently lower suckling frequencies than did primiparous mothers. The high suckling frequency, and numerous nipple contacts per bout, found among primiparous mothers are likely to be related to the low reproductive chances that these females faced during the breeding season. Multiparous mothers seemed to compensate for their low suckling frequency by lengthening the suckling bouts, and this suckling pattern did not hinder their reproduction. It is argued that primiparous mothers might have to suckle their infants more frequently because they can only produce milk at slow rates, being in this way forced into a reproductively inhibiting suckling pattern. However, the delay in subsequent reproduction could be ultimately advantageous for primiparous mothers if it enhanced infant survival, and allowed the mothers to regain physical condition before reproducing again.  相似文献

This study provides endocrine data in relation to behavioral events during the transition of the non-breeding into the breeding season in American bison (Bison bison). Fecal progesterone metabolite patterns (20-oxo-P) were obtained in 13 adult female American bison and hormonal data were correlated with behavioral observations; i.e. copulation, male tending, female tail-up behavior and gestation length. Based on fecal progesterone metabolite patterns, the breeding season started between the middle of July and early August. Predictable short cycles reflected the transition from non-breeding to the breeding season; the luteal phase of these cycles was 4.10+/-0.86 days. Copulations and female tail-up behavior were reliably associated with the hormonally detected ovulation. Male tending behavior was more loosely associated with hormonally detected ovulation. The observed hormonal pattern in the study females indicated that 9 of 10 pregnant cows conceived during the second ovulatory period in the breeding season. One other cow conceived during her third ovulatory period, and one cow did not conceive until later in the breeding season by beginning of October. Gestation duration was on average 266.30+/-1.00 days. In summary, this study confirmed that the bison is a seasonally polyestrous species; the transition from the non-breeding into the breeding season was characterized by short cycles with low progesterone metabolite values.  相似文献

The accuracy and precision of sexual swellings and fecal steroids as measures of ovarian function and the periovulatory period were compared in 4 sexually mature, individually housed, sooty mangabey females. Fecal samples were collected daily over a 10-week period during the normal breeding season. Serum was collected 3×/week, daily during peak swelling, and sex skin was rated 5×/week on a 0–5 relative scale. Both fecal estradiol (fE2) and progesterone (fP4) were significantly correlated with serum values in composite E2-aligned profiles and within the cycles of individual females with average correlations of rs = 0.6. Follicular phase means for fE2 and luteal phase means for fP4 were significantly correlated with the serum means across cycles, suggesting that fecal concentrations could be used to accurately evaluate cycle phases within and across females. In contrast, the timing of peak swelling relative to the periovulatory period varied considerably across the cycles of individual females. Although maximum tumescence appears to bracket the periovulatory period, individual differences in the duration of peak swelling and the timing of its onset and end tend to obscure the exact time of ovulation in relation to maximal tumescence. These data illustrate the utility of fecal steroid analysis as a tool for further evaluation of the signal value of sexual skin and its role in mating interactions. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Reproductive Behavior in the Rhesus Monkey: Social and Endocrine Variables   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SYNOPSIS. Social groups of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatto) livingin outdoor environments exhibit a distinct seasonal mating patternand female rhesus are observed to be sexually receptive fordiscrete periods averaging about 9 days duration. In the laboratoryenvironment mating occurs throughout the year and, in the pairtest, female rhesus are observedto be sexually receptive throughall phases of a menstrual cycle, with a periovulatory peak incopulatorybehavior. The apparent conflict between results from field andlaboratory studies has been difficult to resolve because ofmethodological limitations inherent in each study environment.Studies conducted on social groups of rhesus monkeys housedin outdoor compounds, an environment in which the species typicalseasonal mating pattern is preserved and which allowsfor concomitantmeasurement of behavioral and hormonal variables, provided informationabout the covariance between female sexual behavior and ovariancycles. Female copulations were observed only in associationwith ovulatory cycles, and were limited to the follicular andperi-ovulatory phases of such cycles, demonstrating that copulatorybehavior in female rhesus monkeys is strongly influenced bycyclic hormonal variables. The studies also revealed that femalestend to conceive on the first ovulatory cycle of the season, that there was no synchrony of cycles among the females, andthat the best predictor of the timing of ovulation in a particularfemale is reproductive outcome in the previous year.  相似文献

The analysis of fecal ovarian steroids provides a powerful noninvasive method to obtain insights into ovulatory cycles, gestation length, and the timing of sexual interactions relative to the periovulatory period in wild primates. Techniques developed to collect and assay feces from free-ranging muriqui monkeys (Brachyteles arachnoides) for estradiol and progesterone yield the first explicit reproductive data on this species, and provide the first opportunity to evaluate the timing of observed copulations with muriqui ovarian cycles. Hormonal profiles from seven females indicate average cycle lengths of 21.0 ± 5.4 days (n=20). Females conceived after 3–6 ovulatory cycles. Gestation length averaged 216.4 ± 1.5 days for the five females for which conception cycles were sampled. Discrete copulation periods spanned an average of 2.1 ± 1.2 days (n=29), with intervals between these concentrated periods of copulations averaging 15.6 ± 6.7 days (n=20). There were no significant differences among females in cycle lengths, copulation period lengths, or copulation interval lengths. Ejaculation was visible following 71.8 ± 26.7% of copulations during the females' preovulatory periods. All females copulated outside the periovulatory period. The proportion of copulation days outside the periovulatory period was slightly greater (p=0.08) for primiparous females (64.8 ± 28.3%) than for multiparous females (28.7 ± 19.7%). Am. J. When maintained under a 14L:10D photoperiod, the duration of behavioural receptivity in female golden hamsters was about 18-21 h depending on age and/or parity. The effectiveness of mating stimuli in initiating pregnancy was shown to be a function of when in the receptive period (early, middle, late) that mating occurred. During the 9-h period before ovulation, 5 ejaculatory series were sufficient to produce a nearly 100% pregnancy rate and maximum litter size. During the ovulation period, however, high pregnancy rates were achieved only when mating continued to satiety (12-15 ejaculatory series plus 10-24 long intromissions). Late in the receptive period even mating to satiety failed to result in a pregnancy. In general, pregnancy rates were significantly higher for young virgin than for older multiparous females when mating occurred during or after the ovulation period. The reduced fecundity of females mating during or after ovulation was due to insufficient vaginocervical stimulation to induce functional luteal activity and not to lack of spermatozoa. Females mating late in the receptive period did not show a cessation of oestrous cycles which characteristically follows the induction of a luteal phase. Greater amounts of vaginocervical stimulation during this time increased the number of females which delivered litters but had no significant effect on litter size. These results suggest that levels of male copulatory behaviour considered 'excessive' when mating occurs early in the receptive period are essential for pregnancy initiation when mating occurs later.  相似文献

Ovarian cycles and the pattern of reproduction in female black-tailed deer in British Columbia were ascertained largely through examination of the ovaries from 444 females. Cyclic development and degeneration of single follicles of ovulatory size occurred several weeks before first ovulation. As the breeding season approached, a second or third large follicle developed in each cycle but in 48% of adult females the follicles were at different stages of maturation. Those failing to rupture at first ovulation luteinized 1 to 2 days thereafter. The first ovulation of the season, in November, never resulted in a lasting pregnancy even though some ova were penetrated by spermatozoa and began to cleave. First ovulation was apparently 'silent' in five of seven females for their ova lacked spermatozoa. Of sixty-one pregnant females, fifty-nine conceived at second ovulation; the other two conceived at subsequent ovulations more widely spaced than the 8- to 9-day interval between first and second ovulations. The synchrony of ovulatory cycles among adult females was such that half of them ovulated for the second time in a span of 7 or 8 days. Primary CL that formed after first ovulation grew to an average maximum volume of only about 45 mm3, whereas those originating at second ovulation grew to twice that size within 5 to 8 days. First generation CL shrank from 35 mm3 to 10 mm3 within 2 days. They disappeared within 18 months but corpora albicantia persisted for the life of the female. The possible ecological significance of the reproductive pattern is discussed.  相似文献

The present study examined the effects of first pregnancy and nursing behavior on postpartum infertility in seasonally breeding rhesus monkeys to assess whether prolonged lactational infertility observed in adolescent mothers is due to a particular pattern of nursing or to decrements in body growth rates. After a successful first pregnancy, a significant percentage of the lactating adolescent mothers (57.1%; n = 8) failed to exhibit an ovulation with normal luteal phase during the subsequent breeding season. In contrast, the remaining lactating adolescents (42.9%, n = 6) and all of the adult mothers (100%, n = 6) exhibited ovulations with a normal luteal phase. Age alone was not the critical variable, since all nonlactating adolescents exhibited ovulations with normal luteal phase parameters in the subsequent breeding season. The luteal phase abnormalities exhibited by the subset of lactating adolescent females were characterized by an inadequate luteal phase (ILP) and by significantly lower serum levels of progesterone, estradiol, and bioactive luteinizing hormone. The occurrence of these ILP ovulations was associated with more frequent nursing bouts prior to ovulation and during the subsequent luteal phase. In contrast, nursing patterns for adult females who had ovulations with normal luteal phases were more similar to those of the infertile lactating adolescents exhibiting significantly longer and more frequent nursing bouts, suggesting that fully adult females may be less sensitive to the inhibitory aspects of a suckling stimulus. Differences in luteal phase function among lactating adolescents were not related to differential rates of ponderal or skeletal growth. A still-developing neuroendocrine system may thus render a significant proportion of adolescent females more sensitive to suckling-induced suppression of gonadotropin secretion.  相似文献

Plasma concentrations of oestradiol-17 beta and progesterone were studied in yearling mink females. The blood samples were collected from 2 March until 13 April in females not subjected to mating and in females mated on two consecutive days, early or late in the breeding season, or with 8-9 days between matings. Peaks in oestradiol-17 beta were recorded on the day of first mating, in relation to the second wave of growing follicles, and in early April, around the time when implantation should have occurred. Significant rises in progesterone were recorded from 17 to 21 March and were slightly later in females mated late in the season. Histological studies of ovaries from unmated females revealed that the number of 'active' follicles exceeded the number of degenerated or luteinized follicles until 7 April, after which the number of degenerated follicles increased rapidly. Degeneration was followed by luteinization. On 15 April, ovaries were collected from two females having 15 luteinized follicles each. These females had increased plasma concentrations of progesterone. These studies indicate that, in female mink, peaks in oestradiol-17 beta coincide with the first mating as a result of the copulatory act and that unmated females appear to experience a luteal phase in the absence of ovulation.  相似文献

Sexually mature female Cape porcupines kept under natural conditions of illumination and temperature did not conceive while housed within their natal groups. Before removal from their natal groups the sexually mature offspring copulated and experienced cyclic ovarian activity, but conception occurred only 70-120 days after dispersal. Mean oestrous cycle length of these females (36.9 +/- 11.5 days; n = 34) was similar to that of breeding females (33.0 +/- 11.64 days; n = 16), but mean peak plasma progesterone concentration (6.45 +/- 6.03 ng/ml; n = 34) was significantly (P less than 0.01) lower than that of cyclic breeding females (13.58 +/- 6.98 ng/ml; n = 16). Mean progesterone concentration at oestrus in non-breeding females (0.72 +/- 0.45 ng/ml; n = 34) was also significantly (P less than 0.01) lower than that of non-pregnant breeding females (4.21 +/- 2.44 ng/ml; n = 16). Reproductive inhibition within natal groups, in which only one female reproduces, therefore cannot be ascribed to a failure to copulate, but may be due to some factor inhibiting full expression of luteal activity or affecting ovulation.  相似文献

A male fitness advantage to wing reduction was investigated for the oriental chinch bug, Cavelerius saccharivorus, which is wing dimorphic. Field surveys for the frequency of matings between wing morphs showed that the mating probability was much higher in brachypterous males than in macropterous males in the early breeding season. Brachypterous males copulated with not only brachypterous females but also macropterous females in this season. This led to a considerable rate (30%) of insemination of macropterous females just before emigration even in the early breeding season. A rearing experiment for the pre-reproductive period of females revealed that females mated with brachypterous males copulated and oviposited earlier than females mated with macropterous males. These results indicate that there is a fitness advantage to wing reduction in the males of C. saccharivorus in terms of the earlier sexual maturation.  相似文献

Non-reproductive copulation, which takes place outside of the mating season and does not result in conception and birth, was studied in a free-ranging group of Tibetan monkeys (Macaca thibetana) at Mt. Huangshan, China, in the birth seasons of 1992 and 1997. We employed all occurrence and focal animal samplings to record sexual and related behaviors and affiliation interactions, respectively. Compared with sexual behavior in mating season, non-reproductive copulation occurred at a lower frequency, with less frequent ejaculation, less harassment, shorter mount duration, and an absence of pause with vocalization. It often took place in a situation in which non-lactating females were involved in social conflict or approached males for mating. Neither pregnant nor lactating females were observed to mate in the birth seasons. Copulation during the birth season did not increase a sexually receptive female’s delivery the next year, nor was it associated with increased proximity, grooming, or agonistic aid for the mating pair. However, copulated pairs spent more time co-feeding, presumably reflecting an increased tolerance on the part of the male. Adolescent males, who rarely copulated in the mating season, engaged in mating activity in birth seasons as well. Therefore, though birth-season copulation had no reproductive functions, it may have fulfilled social functions for females, such as post-aggression appeasing by males or gaining access to resources. This also offered good opportunities for adolescent males and females to develop their sexual skills for later competition.  相似文献

The characteristics of the oestrous and ovarian cycles of local goats were studied over 2 years, on 96 females in March, 60 in July and 100 in November. After 3 weeks of separation between sexes, the females with inactive ovaries were identified and harnessed males were introduced. Detection of oestrus was undertaken daily and the date and rate of ovulation were checked at laparoscopies. The proportion of females with non-cyclic ovaries before the mating period varied according to the season and whether the females were nulliparous or suckling. Among the females with inactive ovaries before the mating period, 97% ovulated 2 . 8 days after the introduction of males; 68% of these initial ovulations were accompanied by oestrus and 76% resulted in short luteal phases (5 . 3 days) followed by a second ovulation accompanied by oestrus 89% of the time. The proportions of initial ovulations with oestrus and of initial ovulations followed by a short luteal phase were in linear relationship with the proportion of females with non-cyclic ovaries before the mating period. For the females with cyclic ovaries before the mating period, the distribution of first oestrus during the 8 days after the introduction of males was significantly different from the expected uniform distribution. A possible luteolytic action of teasing was suspected. The fertility of females in all groups was high (greater than 79%). Litter size was not different for non-cyclic and for cyclic females.  相似文献

This study examines correlates of reproduction in Lemur mongoz, an endangered prosimian primate with a history of poor captive reproduction. Male testicular growth and regression were quantified via testicular indices (TI). Although TIs could be used to predict male breeding condition, they were not indicators of ability to sire offspring. Serum estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) concentrations, along with vaginal cytology, were used to monitor female reproductive cyclicity. E2 and P profiles showed no abnormalities. An elevation of E2 with low P, approximately one estrous cycle length (31.4 days) prior to the onset of fertile cycles, was consistent with the phenomenon of ‘pseudoestrus’ observed in other lemur species. The copulatory pattern, consisting of thrusting, multiple intromissions, single or multiple ejaculations, and no copulatory lock, was more complex than expected for an animal with a supposedly monogamous mating system. The preference for natural arboreal substrata during copulation suggests that enclosure furnishings may influence copulatory behavior. A 30% neonatal mortality rate tempered recent success in breeding L. mongoz at the Duke University Primate Center (DUPC). Although infant sex and parity of the mother were not predictive of neonatal mortality, mother's natal status was, with captive-born females having a 67% infant mortality rate, compared with 15% in wild-caught females. Based on these observations, a number of factors, including housing, behavior, and photoperiod, may be relevant to successful captive propagation of L. mongoz. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Sexual conflict over mating can result in sex-specific morphologies and behaviours that allow each sex to exert control over the outcome of reproduction. Genital traits, in particular, are often directly involved in conflict interactions. Via genital manipulation, we experimentally investigated whether genital traits in red-sided garter snakes influence copulation duration and formation of a copulatory plug. The hemipenes of male red-sided garter snakes have a large basal spine that inserts into the female cloaca during mating. We ablated the spine and found that males were still capable of copulation but copulation duration was much shorter and copulatory plugs were smaller than those produced by intact males. We also anaesthetized the female cloacal region and found that anaesthetized females copulated longer than control females, suggesting that female cloacal and vaginal contractions play a role in controlling copulation duration. Both results, combined with known aspects of the breeding biology of red-sided garter snakes, strongly support the idea that sexual conflict is involved in mating interactions in this species. Our results demonstrate the complex interactions among male and female traits generated by coevolutionary processes in a wild population. Such complexity highlights the importance of simultaneous examination of male and female traits.  相似文献
