Otocinclus cocama, a uniquely colored species of the loricariid catfish genus Otocinclus described solely from the type locality in the lower Ucayali River in northern Peru, is reported occurring in the Tigre River, a tributary to the Marañón River that drains a different section of the Andean Mountain range in the western Amazon. Both populations differ in the number of dark bars spanning the flanks of the body, and we investigated whether these morphotypes constitute distinct species. The body shapes of populations from the Tigre and Ucayali rivers were compared using geometric morphometrics. Although principal component analysis detected a broad overlap between populations, multivariate analysis of variance and linear driscriminat analysis revealed a subtle differentiation between the populations of the two hydrographic basins. Average body shape of the Ucayali River population tend to be slightly higher than that of the Tigre River, with the caudal peduncle stretched vertically in the Ucayali population. Multivariate regression of shape and centroid size revealed an allometric effect of 10.7% (p < 0.001), suggesting that the variation between Tigre and Ucayali populations was purely shape variation. Molecular data of coI, cytb, nd2, and 16S mitochondrial genes indicated a nucleotide diversity range from 0.001 to 0.003, and haplotypic diversity range from 0.600 ± 0.11 to 0.79 ± 0.07. The median-joining haplotype network for the concatenated matrix exhibited two divergent haplogroups related to the geographic area and separated by <10 mutational steps. The molecular species delimitation methods based on distance (automatic barcode gap discovery and assemble species by automatic partitioning) recovered two molecular lineages evolving independently, being one of the lineages formed by individuals from both populations. Tree-based methods (generalized mixed Yule coalescent and Bayesian implementation of the Poisson tree process) recovered similar topologies and supported single lineage recognition. Methods of molecular delimitation of species disclosed the high similarity between the two populations of Otocinclus cocama, further supported by the presence of old haplotypes common to both groups which could indicate that the populations still maintain gene flow. Although the morphological data reveal a subtle variation between both river basins, the molecular data suggest a weak population structuration based on hydrographic areas, but not different species lineages, therefore Otocinclus cocama is composed of a single lineage with two distinct morphotypes.  相似文献

Color pattern was one of the most important characters used to diagnose species in the genus Lepidocyrtus until the introduction of chaetotaxy to Collembola taxonomy. Chaetotaxy confirmed most species diagnoses based only on color patterns, but a number of populations with distinct pigmentation patterns have been found to be identical in all other morphological characters. The absence of individuals showing intermediate color patterns prompted Yoshii to suggest that, despite chaetotaxic identity, populations with distinct color forms represent valid species (implying reproductive isolation and therefore biological species) in what he designated as "color pattern species." In Puerto Rico Lepidocyrtus biphasis, L. dispar, and L. caprilesi show a remarkable variation in pigmentation and as a group include 11 different color forms. Here I present a phylogenetic analysis of the cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI) in 17 species of Lepidocyrtus and Pseudosinella, including 11 species and 10 color forms of Puerto Rican Lepidocyrtus, to test Yoshii's color pattern species concept. The analysis shows large genetic distances between species defined based on morphology alone (morphospecies) and between most color variants within morphospecies. The most often used calibration for the COI molecular clock (2.3% sequence divergence per million years) suggests that morphospecies diverged between 20 and 25 million years before present while color forms within morphospecies diverged between 8 and 19 million years ago. This indicates that changes in climate and sea levels during the Pleistocene were irrelevant to the speciation process in the Puerto Rican Lepidocyrtus. Examination of the genetic variation, phylogenetic relationships, and collection data in light of the biological and phylogenetic species concepts supports the hypothesis that most populations of morphospecies differing only in color pattern are distinct species, thus validating Yoshii's color pattern species concept. As a result it is suggested that morphological characters traditionally used in species diagnoses are very conservative indicators of genetic divergence, that the diversity of springtails has been greatly underestimated, and that studies concerned with identifying factors promoting speciation in Collembola could be misled if they do not include analysis of mitochondrial markers.  相似文献

Pseudoplatystoma is a commercially important genus of Neotropical migratory catfishes widely distributed in all major river basins of South America. Historically, only three species were recognized, but a recent revision proposed eight putative morphospecies for the genus. A molecular study based on mitochondria DNA (mtDNA) provided support for recognition of only some of the species and raised questions about species boundaries in this group. We present a more encompassing analysis based on mtDNA (cytochrome b, 818bp) and nuclear DNA-based phylogenies (Rag1 intron 1, 664bp and S7 intron 1, 635bp) for a more extensive sampling (279 individuals from 42 localities) of all putative species in all major river basins. Patterns generated by individual gene genealogies and a multispecies coalescent analysis provided evidence to suggest recognition of only four distinct species in this genus: Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, Pseudoplatystoma tigrimun (sensu lato) and Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum (sensu lato). The species phylogeny places P. magdaleniatum as the sister group to all the other species in the genus, but the relationships among P. fasciatum s.l, P. tigrimum s.l., and P. corruscans could not be resolved with confidence.  相似文献

Fierce predatory freshwater fishes, the species of Percocypris (Cyprinidae, Teleostei) inhabit large rivers or lakes, and have a specific distribution pattern. Only a single species or subspecies occurs in each large-scale drainage basin of the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau. In this study, the molecular phylogenetic relationships for all but one of the described subspecies/species of Percocypris were investigated based on three mitochondrial genes (16S; COI; Cyt b) and one nuclear marker (Rag2). The results of Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses show that Percocypris is a strongly supported monophyletic group and that it is the sister group of Schizothorax. Combined with analyses of morphological characters, our results suggest that Percocypris needs to be reclassified, and we propose that six species be recognized, with corresponding distributions in five main drainages (including one lake). In addition, based on the results of the estimation of divergence times and ancestral drainages, we hypothesize that Percocypris likely originated in the early Miocene from a paleo-connected drainage system containing the contemporary main drainages of the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau. This study suggests that vicariance (due to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau modifying the large-scale morphologies of drainage basins in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau) has played an important role in the speciation of the genus. Furthermore, external morphological characters (such as the length of the fins) and an internal trait (the position of pterygiophore) appear to be correlated with different habitats in rivers and the lake.  相似文献

We investigated sperm cells and spermatophores of four species of Old World freshwater crabs belonging to three different genera of the subfamily Potaminae (family Potamidae). Characters previously believed to be apomorphic for the potamid subfamily Potamiscinae were also found to occur in the Potaminae. To infer the morphological ancestral character state combination of the Potamidae, ancestral character state analysis of four different sperm traits was performed, based on a 16S rDNA phylogeny of the investigated species. Comparing molecular phylogeny and character state distribution, several cases of convergent evolution could be identified. The densely packed, coenospermic spermatophores and the occurrence of a ‘tongue‐and‐groove’ connection between operculum and acrosomal zones are probably apomorphies for the whole Potamidae. The spermatozoa of Socotrapotamon socotrense show several unique characters. We also analysed the evolution of acrosome size. The sperm cells of the Potamidae and their sister‐group Gecarcinucidae only slightly overlap in acrosome size. Within the investigated species, the ‘East Asia’ subclade (subfamily Potamiscinae) developed significantly larger acrosomes than the subfamily Potaminae. Our results suggest that the use of brachyuran acrosome morphology for phylogenetic inference at the family level is strongly affected by small sample size, and by convergent character evolution. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010.  相似文献

We tested the efficiency of cytochrome oxidase I (COI)‐barcoding as a taxonomic tool to discriminate and identify sympatric shrew species on Mount Nimba (Guinea). We identified 148 specimens at the species level using morphological characters and comparison with type specimens, including several taxa from Mount Nimba. We identified ten morphospecies and tested aspects of genetic diversity and monophyly using genetic data from three mitochondrial (16S, cytochrome b, and COI) and one nuclear marker (the breast cancer gene, BRCA). Nine morphospecies were validated under the phylogenetic and genetic species concepts, including the recently diverged species Crocidura buettikoferi, Crocidura theresae, and Crocidura grandiceps. Under the same concepts, our analyses revealed the presence of two cryptic species amongst animals identified as Crocidura muricauda. We then tested the efficiency of barcoding thanks to commonly used phenetic methods, with the 148 specimens representing 11 potentially valid species based on morphological and molecular data. We show that COI‐barcoding is a powerful tool for shrew identification and can be used for taxonomic surveys. The comparison of genetic divergence values shows the presence of a barcoding gap (i.e. difference between the highest intraspecific and the lowest interspecific genetic divergence values). Given that only a few COI sequences are available for Afrotropical shrews, our work is an important step forward toward their enrichment. In small metazoan invertebrates classical taxonomic analyses can be ambiguous due to the limited number of morphological characters available. This difficulty can yield incorrect estimates of species richness or taxa distribution. The Boeckella genus has been described as the dominant taxon of zooplankton assemblages in the Andean biogeographical region. In this genus, taxonomic classification and delimitation of boundaries between species has long been problematic and controversial. Among South American centropagids Boeckella gracilipes has been regarded as one of the most broadly distributed species, its presence having been reported from Ecuador to Tierra del Fuego. However, in the high Andean plateau some centropagid populations identified as Boeckella gracilipes have also been considered as B. gracilipes titicacae or even identified as a different species, namely Boeckella titicacae. In an attempt to resolve the taxonomic status of the Centropagidae family from the high Andean plateau, we combined traditional and multivariate morphological analyses (integral approach) with the molecular phylogenetic approach. The results obtained allow us to conclude that centropagids collected from the high Andean plateau actually represent a different species, B. titicacae, not B. gracilipes. The phylogenetic reconstruction of the South American Centropagidae family indicated that B. gracilipes represents a sister taxon to B. titicacae. The present study stresses the usefulness of integrating alfa-taxonomy with morphometric and molecular approaches in order to resolve species boundaries, to determine geographical distributions and to investigate evolutionary processes.  相似文献

Ips acuminatus has a Eurasian distribution and overlaps with Ips chinensis in southern China.These species are morphologically similar and taxonomic confusion is possible because of the lack of a recent systematic review of these species.Assembly of specimens throughout the ranges of these species allowed for the examination of species boundaries based on monophyly.A phylogeny was reconstructed with cytochrome oxidase Ⅰ DNA sequences for 24 individuals plus three outgroups and morphological diagnostic characters typical for Ips species were reviewed.The strict consensus of 16 most parsimonious trees recovered I.acuminatus and I.chinensis reciprocally monophyletic with an above average pairwise sequence difference (9.6% compared to 6.1% for Ips sister species).These clades associated with diagnostic characters of elytral declivity,that is,the position of spine 2.Monophyly,nucleotide differences,and diagnostic characters support the validity of I.chinensis.In addition,high sequence divergence was observed between two clades of I.chinensis which corresponded to northern and southern populations however consistent morphological differences were not found for those clades.  相似文献

In the Dampier Archipelago of Western Australia's Pilbara Region, several locally endemic, morphologically distinctive species of Rhagada land snails occur, contrasting with the morphologically conservative species with wider distributions on the adjacent mainland. To test alternative origins of this unusual local diversity in a continental archipelago, we examined sequences of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 and 16S mitochondrial genes in 22 described species and eight undescribed forms, including all known morphospecies from the Pilbara Region's Dampier Archipelago and adjacent mainland. Phylogenetic analyses consistently resolved four, deep clades within the Pilbara Region, with a mean sequence divergence of 15–18%. All but one of the species from the Dampier Archipelago formed one of the major clades, indicating that the morphological radiation in the archipelago evolved locally, rather than through multiple, relictual mainland lineages. Morphological divergence spanning almost that of the entire genus was within a subclade with sequence divergence < 4%, highlighting the disconnection between morphological diversification and levels of molecular genetic divergence. This in situ morphological radiation in the Dampier Archipelago, which transcends variation seen over much larger distances on the mainland, is unusual for a continental archipelago, and may relate to local heterogeneity of land forms. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 316–327.  相似文献

Leptodactylus fuscus is a neotropical frog ranging from Panamá to Argentina, to the east of the Andes mountains, and also inhabiting Margarita, Trinidad, and the Tobago islands. We performed phylogenetic analyses of 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, tRNA-Leu, and ND1 mitochondrial (mt) DNA sequences from specimens collected across the geographic distribution of L. fuscus to examine two alternative hypotheses: (i) L. fuscus is a single, widely distributed species, or (ii) L. fuscus is a species complex. We tested statistically for geographic association and partitioning of genetic variation among mtDNA clades. The mtDNA data supported the hypothesis of several cryptic species within L. fuscus. Unlinked mtDNA and nuclear markers supported independently the distinctness of a 'northern' phylogenetic unit. In addition, the mtDNA data divided the southern populations into two clades that showed no sister relationship to each other, consistent with high differentiation and lack of gene flow among southern populations as suggested by allozyme data. Concordance between mtDNA and allozyme patterns suggests that cryptic speciation has occurred in L. fuscus without morphological or call differentiation. 基于43个广义的形态学性状,对木通科进行了分支系统学分析。经过简约性分析,得到了68个同等简约的分支树。50%多数规则一致树的分支结构与以前建立的族划分系统基本一致。外类群大血藤属与木通科的勃奎拉藤属形成姐妹群,与以前的分支分析结果一致,但在分子系统发育树中,大血藤属却是整个木通科的姐妹群;除此之外,形态分支树的结构与分子树的结构差别不大,但一致性指数、保持性指数和各分支内部支持率均较低。单型的猫儿屎族和串果藤族位于分支树的基部,拉氏藤族与木通族是姐妹群,在木通族内,长萼木通属和木通属是姐妹群,作为一个分支;另一分支是PHS(牛藤果属、八月瓜属和野木瓜属)复合群,牛藤果属位于八月瓜属和野木瓜属各类群的基部。但八月瓜属和野木瓜属的属内系统发育关系仍有待进一步研究。  相似文献

We describe in this paper a new genus and species of cricetid rodent from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, one of the most endangered eco‐regions of the world. The new form displays some but not all synapomorphies of the tribe Oryzomyini, but a suite of unique characteristics is also observed. This new forest rat possesses anatomical characteristics of arboreal taxa, such as very developed plantar pads, but was collected almost exclusively in pitfall traps. Phylogenetic analyses of morphological (integument, soft tissue, cranial, and dental characters) and molecular [nuclear – Interphotoreceptor retinoid binding protein (Irbp) – and mitochondrial – cytochrome b– genes] datasets using maximum likelihood and cladistic parsimony approaches corroborate the inclusion of the new taxon within oryzomyines. The analyses also place the new form as sister species to Eremoryzomys polius, an Andean rat endemic to the Maranon valley. Phylogenetic and biogeographical analyses were performed for the Plesiolebiasini, a group of 20 small and rare species of South American annual killifishes, some threatened with extinction, occurring in river basins of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. The results of a maximum parsimony analysis of 142 morphological characters highly corroborate monophyly of the Plesiolebiasini. Monophyly of each plesiolebiasine genus is supported and Plesiolebias is hypothesized to be the sister group to a clade comprising the remaining plesiolebiasine genera (Papiliolebias, Pituna, Maratecoara, and Stenolebias), corroborating studies based on mitochondrial genes. The phylogenetic analysis supports sister group relationships between Papiliolebias and the clade containing Pituna, Maratecoara, and Stenolebias, and between Maratecoara and Stenolebias. The biogeographical analysis indicates a complex historical biogeographical scenario for plesiolebiasines. A vicariance event between the western Paraguay area and northern river basins may be related to the isolation of the Chaco region from the Amazon between the Late Oligocene and Early Miocene. Phylogenetic relationships of populations and species within Potamorrhaphis, a genus of freshwater South American needlefishes, were assessed using mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences. Samples were obtained from eight widely distributed localities in the Amazon and Orinoco rivers, and represented all three currently recognized species of Potamorrhaphis. The phylogeny of haplotypes corresponded imperfectly to current morphological species identities: haplotypes from P. guianensis, the most widespread species, did not make up a monophyletic clade. Geography played a strong role in structuring genetic variation: no haplotypes were shared between any localities, indicating restricted gene flow. Possible causes of this pattern include limited dispersal and the effects of current and past geographical barriers. The haplotype phylogeny also showed a complex relationship between fishes from different river basins. Based on the geographical distribution of clades, we hypothesize a connection between the middle Orinoco and Amazon via rivers of the Guianas. More ancient divergence events may have resulted from Miocene alterations of river drainage patterns. We also present limited data for two other Neotropical freshwater needlefish genera: Belonion and Pseudotylosurus. Pseudotylosurus showed evidence of substantial gene flow between distant localities, indicating ecological differences from Potamorrhaphis.  相似文献

We present morphological and molecular (mitochondrial DNA, mtDNA) evidence supporting the validity and monophyly of the genus Oreobates . This genus also includes members of the former Eleutherodactylus discoidalis species group plus Eleutherodactylus heterodactylus . The presence of prominent conical subarticular tubercles and prominent supernumerary tubercles associated with the axis of fingers and toes, the presence of glandular axillary pads, and the absence of vocal sacs are proposed as morphological synapomorphies. Species of this taxon form a well-supported crown clade in a phylogeny including members of the genera Craugastor and Eleutherodactylus s.l. The sister taxon to Oreobates is the Eleutherodactylus martinicensis series; Oreobates does not appear to be closely related to the Eleutherodactylus binotatus series or to members of the Eleutherodactylus dolops and Eleutherodactylus nigrovittatus species groups. The taxonomic status of all species of Oreobates is reassessed. Hylodes philippi and Hylodes verrucosus are removed from the synonymy of Oreobates quixensis . We redescribe Oreobates cruralis on the basis of the holotype and new material from Bolivia and Peru, and restrict its distribution to the humid forests of the lowlands and adjacent foothills of the Andes, from southern Peru to central Bolivia. Oreobates granulosus is rediscovered, redescribed, and resurrected, on the basis of the examination of the holotype and additional material from Peru. Phylogenetic analyses of partial 16S mtDNA are used to test the independence of lineages (species). A molecular phylogenetic study of Plantago L. (Plantaginaceae) analysed nucleotide variation in the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal and plastid trnL-F regions. Included are 57 Plantago species, with two Aragoa species as the ingroup and three Veronica species as the outgroup. Phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony identified five major clades, corresponding to the taxonomic groups Plantago subgenera Plantago, Coronopus, Psyllium, Littorella and Bougueria . Aragoa is sister to genus Plantago . Plantago subgenus Littorella is sister to the other subgenera of Plantago . The results are in general correlated with a morphological phylogenetic study and iridoid glucoside patterns, but Plantago subgenus Albicans is paraphyletic and should be included in Plantago subgenus Psyllium sensu lato to obtain a monophyletic clade with six sections. Plantago section Hymenopsyllium is more closely related to section Gnaphaloides than to section Albicans . Plantago subgenus Bougueria is sister to subgenus Psyllium s.l. section Coronopus in Plantago subgenus Coronopus is subdivided in two series. Only some of the sections can be resolved into series. DNA variation within genus Plantago is high, a result that would not have been predicted on the basis of morphology, which is relatively stereotyped. If we calibrate a molecular clock based on the divergence of P. stauntoni , endemic to New Amsterdam in the southern Indian Ocean, we calculate the time of the split between Plantago and Aragoa to be 7.1 million years ago, which is congruent with the fossil record.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 139 , 323–338.  相似文献

The first scolopocryptopid centipede known from the fossil record is a specimen of the subfamily Scolopocryptopinae in Miocene amber from Chiapas, southern Mexico. It is described here as Scolopocryptops simojovelensis sp. nov. , displaying a distinct combination of morphological characters compared to extant congeners. Anatomical details of the fossil specimen were acquired by non‐invasive 3D synchrotron microtomography using X‐ray phase contrast. The phylogenetic position of the new species is inferred based on a combination of morphological data with sequences for six genes (nuclear 18S and 28S rRNA, nuclear protein‐coding histone H3, and mitochondrial 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, and protein‐coding cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) for extant Scolopendromorpha. The data set includes eight extant species of Scolopocryptops and Dinocryptops from North America, east Asia, and the Pacific, rooted with novel sequence data for other blind scolopendromorphs. The molecular and combined data sets, analysed in a parsimony/direct optimization framework, identified a stable pattern of two main clades within Scolopocryptopinae. North American and Asian species of Scolopocryptops are united as a clade supported by both morphological and molecular characters. Its sister group is a Neotropical clade in which the type species of Dinocryptops is nested within a paraphyletic assemblage of Scolopocryptops species; Dinocryptops is placed in synonymy with Scolopocryptops. We used mitochondrial [cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO I ), cytochrome b , and 16S] and nuclear [internal transcribed spacer (ITS) phylogenies of Skistodiaptomus copepods to test hypotheses of Pleistocene divergence and speciation within the genus. Mitochondrial (mt)DNA sequence divergences do not support hypotheses for Pleistocene speciation and instead suggest much more ancient speciation events in the genus. Skistodiaptomus oregonensis and Skistodiaptomus pygmaeus (i.e. two morphologically similar and parapatric species) exhibited uncorrected mtDNA sequence divergences exceeding 20%. Similarly, we identified three divergent clades of Skistodiaptomus pallidus that exhibited mtDNA sequence divergences exceeding 15%, suggesting that even intraspecific divergence within this morphospecies predates the Pleistocene. We found clear evidence of CO I pseudogenes in S. pygmaeus , but their presence did not lead to significant overestimates of sequence divergences for this gene. Substitution saturation and strong purifying selection have most likely led to underestimates of sequence divergences and divergence times among Skistodiaptomus . The widespread phenomenon of morphological stasis among genetically divergent copepod groups indicates that speciation often occurs with little or no morphological change. Instead, morphological evolution may occur idiosyncratically after speciation and create discordant patterns of morphological similarity, shared ancestry and divergence time. Length–weight relationships (LWRs) for 23 freshwater fish species from the Andean Amazon piedmont in Peru are presented in this study. Fishes were captured between 2009 and 2010 on lagoons from three basins; Amazonas (Ampiyacu and Apayacu) and Ucayali (Pachitea) using gillnets. In this study, new LWRs are reported for 20 species of 23 species analyzed. The study provides new information on less‐studied species and can serve as a basis for management of fisheries and conservation of this area.  相似文献

Study of floral anatomy, micromorphology, palynology and onotogeny has revealed new characters for phylogenetic analysis in the genus Scleranthus . Cladistic analysis of these characters, along with those previously available, suggests that the genus consists of Eurasian/Mediterranean and Australasian sister clades. Gynoecial morphology and development are closely similar in all species, suggesting the genus is monophyletic despite its disjunct northern and southern hemisphere distribution. Variation in pollen:ovule ratios and their implications for the evolution of Scleranthus species are also discussed and it is concluded that a range of breeding strategies intermediate between autogamy and xenogamy exists in the genus. Single-stamened species of Scleranthus are likely to be obligate autogams, despite their comparatively high pollen:ovule ratios in relation to autogamic species of other genera.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 140 , 15–29.  相似文献
