This research was conducted to assess the water quality and the contamination of heavy metals in water, sediment, fish, and frogs, as well as bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) in fish and frogs around the gold mine area. The water samples were analyzed for water quality (temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen). The samples were analyzed for heavy metals by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The water quality was within the standard. The concentrations of heavy metals, including As, Cr, Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, Fe, Mn, and Cu, in water and sediment samples were measured. Three species of fish were collected: Rasbora tornieri, Brachydanio albolineata, and Systomus rubripinnis. The mean heavy metal concentrations of fish were as follows: Fe>Zn>Mn>Cr>Ni>Cu>As>Pb>Cd. The As, Cr, and Pb concentrations in all the fish species exceeded the standard levels. Five species of frogs were collected: Kaloula pulchra, Microhyla heymonsi, Fejervarya limnocharis, Hoplobatrachus rugulosus, and Microhyla pulchra. The mean heavy metal concentrations of frog were as follows: Fe>Cu>Mn>Zn>Cr>Ni>Pb>Cd>As. The Cr, Cd, and Cu concentrations exceeded the standard levels. The BAFs in fish were in order of Cr>Zn>Ni>Cu>Pb>Fe>Cd>As. The BAFs in frogs were Cr>Zn>Ni>Cu>Fe>Pb>Cd>As. The accumulation of heavy metals was higher in the sediment than in the water. Many aquatic organisms take up heavy metals directly from the environment around the gold mine.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the contamination level, distribution, health risk and potential sources of Cr, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni and As in 66 topsoil samples from industrial areas in Bandar Abbas County. The geoaccumulation index, pollution index and pollution load index were calculated to assess the pollution level in the industrial soils. The hazard index and carcinogenic risk were used to assess human health risk of heavy metals. Results showed that the contamination levels of heavy metals were in the descending order of Cu> Cd> Pb> Zn> As> Ni> Cr. Moreover, based on principal component analysis, Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb originated mainly from anthropogenic sources, including power plants, oil and gas refinery, steel and zinc production factories and municipal waste landfills. For non-carcinogenic effects, hazard index of studied metals decreased in the order of Cr> As> Cd> Pb> Ni > Cu> Zn. Arsenic, chromium and cadmium were regarded as the priority pollutants. Carcinogenic risks due to Cd and As in suburban soils were within tolerable risk to human health; however, children faced more health risk in their daily life than adults via their unconscious ingestion and dermal contact pathway.  相似文献

We studied the response of Brachionus patulus to different concentrations of the heavy metal Pb in the presence and absence of sediments. We conducted acute (LC50) and chronic (life table demography and population growth) toxicity tests using sediment levels of 0, 30 and 280 mg l−1 (=0, 17 and 170 NTU) and Pb at 0, 0.06 and 0.6 mg l−1. Experiments were conducted at 20 ± 1°C on a horizontal shaker and algal food (Chlorella vulgaris) was added at a density of 1.0 × 106 cells ml−1. The median lethal concentration (LC50 ± 95% Confidence intervals) of PbCl2 for B. patulus was 6.15 ± 1.08 mg l−1. Age-specific survivorship and fecundity curves showed increase in turbidity level resulted in decreased survival and offspring production of the rotifers. Increase in Pb concentration too had a negative effect on the survival and reproductive output of B. patulus. Statistically, average lifespan, life expectancy at birth, gross and net reproductive rates and the rate of population increase were all significantly influenced by the concentration of Pb, turbidity level as well as the interaction of Pb concentration × turbidity level. Rotifers exposed to 170 NTU did not grow regardless of the heavy metal concentration in the medium. Similarly, B. patulus exposed to 0.6 mg l−1 Pb did not survive beyond 10 days regardless of the turbidity level in the medium. The rate of population increase of B. patulus derived from the growth experiments was negative in all treatments containing Pb as low as 0.06 mg l−1 or turbidity level as low as 17 NTU. In treatments containing Pb or sediments, there existed no relation between the egg ratio and the population density. Guest editors: S. S. S. Sarma, R. D. Gulati, R. L. Wallace, S. Nandini, H. J. Pinus banksiana andPicea glauca inoculated or not with the ectomycorrhizal fungusSuillus luteus were grown in a sandy loam soil containing a range of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn concentrations. Ectomycorrhizal colonization rates were significantly reduced on Pinus and Picea seedlings by the heavy metals, particularly Cd and Ni. Needle tissue metal concentrations were lower in ectomycorrhizal seedlings at low soil metal concentrations. However, at higher soil concentrations, heavy metal concentrations of needle tissue were similar in ectomycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants. The growth of nonmycorrhizal seedlings exposed to heavy metals was reduced compared to those inoculated withSuillus luteus. Apparently ectomycorrhizal colonization can protect Pinus and Picea seedlings from heavy metal toxicity at low or intermediate soil concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn.  相似文献

The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn inChironomus gr.thummi were determined for 4th instar larvae from the polluted Dyle River, tributary of the Scheldt River (Belgium). Comparison was made between larvae with deformed and normal menta. Deformed larvae showed higher overall metal concentrations than normal larvae. Especially Pb and Cu had higher concentrations in deformed larvae (16.22 mg kg–1 dry weight and 39.66 respectively) than in normal larvae (12.80 mg kg–1 dry weight and 35.70 respectively). No significant differences were found in the concentrations of Cd and Zn (mean [Cd] = 0.81 mg kg–1 dry weight and mean [Zn] = 313.12 mg kg–1 dry weight). There was no difference between the two larval groups as far as total length, dry weight and developmental stage of the imaginal discs are concerned.  相似文献

Cadmium, Zn, Pb and Cu uptake and effects in larvae ofChironomus riparius (Meigen) were studied in an integrated laboratory investigation, in which metal analyses in different instar stages, uptake kinetics and effects on development and growth were considered in three separate experiments. In short-term experiments with fourth instar larvae, it was demonstrated that only a minor portion of metals was adsorbed on the larval exoskeletons. No conclusive evidence on the uptake mechanism was found, but active uptake of trace metals seemed highly unlikely. In partial life cycle experiments, all four metals studied were readily accumulated in chironomid larvae. Uptake could be described satisfactorily utilizing a first-order one-compartment uptake model which incorporated growth. In all cases steady state conditions were approached and high uptake and elimination rate constants were estimated. Distinct differences between essential (Zn and Cu) and non-essential (Cd and Pb) metals were noted. Larval growth was significantly impaired upon exposure. Finally, long-term exposure experiments with low Cd concentrations (0.010 and 0.025 mg 1–1) resulted initially in growth impairment and high mortality in first instar stages, but surviving larvae restored growth and adults emerged even before control adults. In similar experiments with Zn (0.1 and 1.0 mg 1–1), development of larvae was significantly retarded. High Zn concentrations in larvae were noted and almost no adult midges emerged.  相似文献

Concentrations of Fe, Pb, Cu, Zn and Cd were determined during one season in the red alga Gracilaria verrucosa, sediment and seawater from the Thermaikos Gulf, Greece. This region has been subject to change due to increases in industrial and domestic activities. The relative abundance of metals in G. verrucosa and seawater decreased in the order: Fe>Zn>Pb>Cu>Cd and in the sediment: Pb>Fe>Zn>Cu>Cd. Cadmium concentration in the alga correlated positively with that in seawater. There was positive correlation between Fe concentrations in the alga and those of the Zn and Cu. The concentrations of metals in the alga showed no significant differences between the stations. Lead, Zn and Cu concentrations in the alga were slightly higher at Biamyl, whereas Cd was higher at Perea and Fe at Nea Krini. Seasonal variation of metal concentrations in the alga was significant for Cd and Fe. Copper and Fe increased from winter to summer, whereas Cd was the opposite. Zinc concentrations were minimum and Pb concentrations were maximum during spring. These variations are discussed in relation to tissue age, life cycle, ambient concentrations of metals and other environmental conditions. Cd and Pb concentrations inG. verrucosa in the Thermaikos Gulf were higher and those of Cu and Zn were lower than in other species of the genus. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The concentrations of metals (Mn, Pb, Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd,Co, Ni, Cr, Na, K, Ca, Mg) were determined in thegreen alga Ulva rigida, in the sediment andseawater of Thermaikos Gulf (Greece) during monthlysamplings in 1994–1995. This Gulf is the recipientof domestic and industrial effluents. Pb, Fe, Cu, Coand Cr concentrations in U. rigida at the studyarea were higher than those 13 years earlier andapparently came from different sources than those forZn, Cd and Ni. The relative abundance of metals inthe alga decreased in the order: Mg > Na > K >Ca > Pb > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr, Cu > Ni >Co > Cd. Only Cu concentrations in the alga fromKalochori and Cd ones from Viamyl showed significantseasonal changes. Cu and Cd concentrations ingeneral followed the same pattern of variation, withminimum values in winter-spring. This pattern isdiscussed in relation to growth dynamics and tissueage. Only Pb concentrations in the alga showed asignificant positive correlation with concentrationsin the seawater. There were both positive andnegative correlations among some metals in the alga. It is concluded that U. rigida can be used as anindicator species, especially for Pb.  相似文献

The concentrations of fifteen elements (B, Na, Mg, Al, P, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Sr, Cd, Pb) in thalli of the sub-aquatic liverwort Pellia endiviifolia (Dicks.) Dum. collected from seven sites in Japan, were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP). The average concentration of major essential elements in the thalli was: 49 600 µg g–1 K, 9 140 µg g–1 Na, 6740 µg g–1 Ca, 3 840 µg g–1 P, and 3 060 µg g–1 Mg. Thalli of P. endiviifolia from sites polluted by heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb) contained high concentrations of these elements (maxima 0.88% Cu, 0.55% Zn and 0.36% Pb in the older thallus), thus demonstrating the potentiality of this liverwort as an indicator for heavy metal contamination.  相似文献

Competition among cladocerans and rotifers is of considerable interest not only due to their close similarity in life history strategies, but also due to the considerable overlap they exhibit in their feeding habits. In tropical waterbodies, several genera of cladocerans, including Ceriodaphnia and Moina occur, simultaneously with rotifers. We tested over a period of 3 weeks the combined effects of food (0.5×106 and 1.5×106 cells ml–1 of Chlorella) level and rotifer density on the competition between B. patulus and C. dubia and M. macrocopa using population growth experiments. For each cladoceran species we used 30 test jars of 50 ml capacity. The initial density of cladocerans was 0.2 ind ml–1, while for B. patulus it was either 1 ind ml–1 or 5 ind ml–1. Neither the maximal population density nor the rate of population increase (r) of C. dubia was significantly affected by B. patulus. However, for M. macrocopa, both these variables were negatively affected by the rotifers. The combined effects of low food level and high initial density of B. patulus resulted in a 50% reduction in the peak population density of M. macrocopa. The population growth of B. patulus was negatively influenced by the presence of C. dubia and M. macrocopa. The results of the competition experiments conducted in the present study between cladocerans and rotifers suggest the existence of a more complex and delicate interaction than is generally thought.  相似文献

Summary Calcium fluxes were measured simultaneously in brown trout fry maintained in an artificial soft water medium of [Ca] 20 mol·l-1 and pH 5.6, and exposed to each of six trace metals (Al, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn). The trace metal concentrations represented typical and maximum levels found in acid waters experiencing declining fishery status. In the absence of trace metals, evidence is presented which suggests that ca. 91% of Ca taken up from the external medium was by extraintestinal active transport. Calcium efflux was stimulated by both concentrations of Al, Cu, Fe, and Pb. Efflux was also stimulated by [Ni] 170 nmol·l-1 and [Zn] 3000 nmol·l-1. In some cases, response to increased efflux was stimulation of influx. Lack of stimulation of influx resulted in negative net Ca fluxes. Net Ca losses were recorded at both concentrations of Al, Pb, and Ni, lower concentrations only of Fe, and higher concentrations only of Cu and Zn.Abbreviations J in influx - J net net flux - J out efflux Henceforward in this paper, chemical elements are referred to by their chemical symbols rather than by full names  相似文献

We studied the relationships between testate amoeba communities and heavy metal (Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni, Cu, Mn, and Fe) concentrations in the moss Barbula indica sampled at 29 sites in and around the city of Hanoi (Vietnam). Our first approach was to compare the heavy metal concentrations and testate amoeba variables between the city (zone 1) and the surrounding (zone 2). Mean moss concentrations of Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni, and Cu were significantly higher and testate amoeba species richness and abundance were significantly lower in zone 1 and the abundance of eight taxa differed significantly between the two zones. We then studied the correlation between heavy metals and testate amoebae. Species richness and abundance were correlated negatively to Pb concentration. Shannon H′ was negatively correlated to both Pb and Cd. The abundance of several species was negatively correlated with Pb, Cd, Zn, and Ni; however, at the community level, Pb emerged as the only significant variable in a redundancy analysis. Our results suggest that testate amoebae are sensitive to and may be good bioindicators for heavy metal pollution, especially lead. Further research is needed to understand the causal relationships underlying the observed patterns.  相似文献

Publications in Russian on the influence of epibiontic rotifers on cladocerans as well as on predator-prey interrelations between cladocerans and rotifers are reviewed. Proales daphnicola and Brachionus rubens are common epibionts of Cladocera. The biology of these species is described including the choice of host, feeding, reproduction and impact on the host. Representatives of the families Daphniidae and Moinidae are most readily colonized. At high densities of epibiontic rotifers, a high percentage of young Cladocera die. Predators consuming cladocerans (mainly Bosminidae) belong to the family Asplanchnidae. Rotifers are consumed by the predatory cladocerans Leptodora and Polyphemus. The results of functional response experiments by the author with P. pediculus feeding on Synchaeta pectinata, Asplanchna priodonta, colonial and solitary Conochilus unicornis, and Platyias patulus are given. In the range of prey densities of 100–1600 1–1 a functional response was found in all the rotifers except P. patulus. Colonies of C. unicornis were not consumed. The highest level of feeding rate saturation was observed in Synchaeta pectinata. Various adaptations in prey morphology prevented effective predation: coloniality, large size of the prey and hard lorica with spines.  相似文献

Members of rotifer family Asplanchnidae are important invertebrate predators in freshwater communities. Although a considerable amount of information exists on species of Asplanchna, relatively less is known about Asplanchnopus. We isolated Asplanchnopus multiceps from the littoral of a small river in the State of Hidalgo in Central Mexico and separated a clone in our cultures. The gut content analysis of some animals collected from the field revealed the presence of cladocerans and rotifers, and therefore we cultured A. multiceps on a food mixture comprising littoral rotifers and cladocerans. We conducted population growth experiments of A. multiceps using six prey types (cladocerans: Macrothrix triserialis, Alona rectangula and Pleuroxus aduncus; rotifers, Brachionus patulus, B. macracanthus and B. urceolaris). The prey species (A. rectangula and B. patulus) on which the highest growth rates were observed were used to test the life-table demographic patterns in A. multiceps. All experiments were conducted in 50 ml containers with 25 ml of the medium and at three food levels (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ind. ml−1 for the cladocerans, and 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 ind. ml−1 for the rotifers) with four replicates at each treatment. The spines of M. triserialis and B. macracanthus were apparently effective deterrents against Asplanchnopus predation since both these diets resulted in low, and sometimes negative, growth rates of the predator. The average lifespan and net reproductive rate of A. multiceps ranged from 3.8 to 8.4 days and 2.6 to 12.2 ind. female−1, respectively, on A. rectangula; and from 5.0 to 9.4 days and 1.6–18.4 ind. female−1, respectively, on B. patulus. The rate of population increase of A. multiceps ranged from 0.1 to 0.8 d−1, depending on the prey type and density. The role of A. multiceps in structuring littoral rotifer and cladoceran communities is discussed.  相似文献

Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were exposed to 0, 100, 400, and 800 μg/g concentrations of Pb in diet for 60 days, and changes in growth performance, metabolic enzyme activities, and essential trace elements (Fe, Cu, and Zn) content in liver and kidney were investigated. Daily weight gain, feed conversation ratio, and survival of tilapia were not significantly affected by dietary Pb. Alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities in liver and kidney were affected by dietary Pb in a dissimilar way: Pb concentration-related decreases in ALT, AST, and LDH activities were observed in kidney, while these enzyme activities in liver were stimulated in a Pb concentration-dependent manner. It was demonstrated that the inhibitory effects of dietary Pb on alkaline phosphatase, Na, K-adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase), Ca, and Mg-ATPase activities in both liver and kidney were Pb concentration-dependent. It was also indicated that the content of Fe, Cu, and Zn in liver and kidney decreased with the increasing dietary Pb concentrations. The results suggested that long-term dietary Pb exposure could affect metabolic enzyme activities and the content of Fe, Cu, and Zn in liver and kidney, whereas growth impairment was not observed in tilapia.  相似文献

Water and muscle tissue samples from two morphotypes of the African large barb Labeobarbus intermedius collected from three sites in Lake Hawassa in 2012–2013 were analysed for eight heavy metals, including Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. Five metals (Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni and Zn) were detected in fish muscle samples, whereas only Cr, Cu and Ni were detected in water samples. Of the five metals detected in the muscle samples, Cu and Zn were present in higher concentrations in the golden morphotype, whereas Cr, Mn and Ni were found in higher concentrations in the silver morphotype. Bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values indicated that Cr, Cu and Ni have a tendency to accumulate in fish muscle in amounts exceeding those in water. In both morphotypes the highest concentrations of Zn and Mn were detected at the Hospital site, whereas the concentrations of Cr, Cu and Ni were highest at the Tikur Wuha site. Chromium, Cu and Ni concentrations recorded in fish muscle at all sampling sites exceeded the safe limits recommended by FAO/WHO and UNESCO, suggesting that water and fish from Lake Hawassa are contaminated with heavy metals originating from factories, a hospital and agricultural activities in proximity to the lake.  相似文献

Individuals of the fairy shrimp, Branchinecta longiantenna, were subjected to 5 concentrations (0.1 to 15 mg l–1) of Pb in diluted habitat water at 13 °C. Lead concentrations (mg kg–1 wet weight) in the animals were determined at 2-day intervals by digestion in nitric acid followed by atomic absorption analysis. The shrimp were also subjected to 0.1 mg l–1 media of Cd and Zn, separately.Uptake rates by the fairy shrimp for the three metal ions at 0.1 mg l–1 were: 0.111, 0.0885, and 0.0460 mg kg–1 day–1 for Zn, Pb, and Cd, respectively. After 2 days in 1.0 mg l–1 Cd or Zn, the animals expired; but they surviced for 8 days in a 10 mg l–1 Pb medium and for 2 days in 25 mg l–1 Pb. Lead uptake demonstrated a linear dependence on the Pb concentration in the media.Shrimp survived at much higher tissue accumulations of Pb compared to Zn and Cd. Estimated lethal doses were 20, 1.2–2.4, and 0.4–1.4 mg kg–1 wet weight for Pb, Zn, and Cd, respectively. Pb was found to be at much lower concentration than Cd or Zn in the natural pond water but between Cd and Zn levels in the sediment. Thus Cd and Zn probably present a greater threat to B. longiantenna than Pb, although Pb may be in higher concentration in the environment.Contribution 47, Laboratory of Ecology, The Claremont Colleges, Claremont, CA 91711, USA. A 4-h exposure of Scenedesmus sp. to Cu or Zn enhanced intracellular levels of both test metals and proline. The level of intracellular proline increased markedly up to 10 µM Cu, but higher concentrations were inhibitory. However, intracellular proline consistently increased with increasing concentration of Zn in the medium. Cu and Zn induced oxidative stress in the test alga by increasing lipid peroxidation and membrane permeability, and by reducing SH content. Pretreatment of the test alga with 1 mM proline for 30 min completely alleviated Cu-induced lipid peroxidation, minimized K+ efflux and also reduced depletion of the SH pool. But proline pretreatment could only slightly reduce Zn-induced oxidative stress. Interestingly, proline pretreatment increased the level of Cu (25–54%) and Zn (19–49%) inside the cells. It did not affect the activities of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase or catalase, but improved glutathione reductase activity under Cu and Zn stress. A comparison of the effects of proline pretreatment on lipid peroxidation by Cu, Zn, methyl viologen and ultraviolet-B radiation suggests that proline protects cells from metal-induced oxidative stress by scavenging reactive oxygen species rather than by chelating metal ions. Pretreatment of cells with a known antioxidant (ascorbate) and a hydroxyl radical scavenger (sodium benzoate) considerably reduced metal-induced lipid peroxidation and proline accumulation. However, sodium benzoate had a very mild effect on Zn-induced lipid peroxidation and proline accumulation. The present study demonstrates that proline possibly acts by detoxifying reactive oxygen species, mainly hydroxyl radicals, rather than by improving the antioxidant defense system under metal stress.Abbreviations APOX Ascorbate peroxidase - CAT Catalase - GR Glutathione reductase - MDA Malondialdehyde - MV Methyl viologen - ROS Reactive oxygen species - SH Sulphydryl - SOD Superoxide dismutase - UV-B Ultraviolet-B radiation  相似文献

The present study was planned to assess the validity ofEnteromorpha intestinalis for an active biomonitoring of heavy metals in the Weser estuary. Exposure of cultured algae (active biomonitoring) was carried out in 1987 and 1988, simultaneouslyEnteromorpha spp. was collected from the banks (passive monitoring) in the estuary. Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn and Cu contents of exposed algae were higher than the metal content of collected algae. Metal contents of both collected and field algae varied significantly over space and time. Bioconcentration factors and results of linear regression analysis indicate, that the bioavailability of Cu and Ni varies with regard to the sampling location but cannot be calculated from heavy metal concentration in the water. Due to the different metal and species specific bioavailability, we want to stress the need to monitor contamination of organisms directly. An active biomonitoring usingE. intestinalis will establish a rationale to compare contamination of different estuaries.  相似文献
