Sexual and asexual reproduction may occur simultaneously in some plant species. Under certain environmental conditions asexual reproduction is predominant, which generates ecological consequences on sexual fecundity. In this context, we studied the reproductive ecology of the creeping clonal cactus Echinopsis thelegona in La Bodega (Salta, Argentina), where low fruit and seed production was preliminarily observed. Specifically, we studied the flower availability, fruit and seed production, reproductive system, floral visitors and effects of neighbor ramets on reproductive success. The number of available flowers per day was low, and fruit production was low or null as well. Echinopsis thelegona is self-incompatible. Although its flowers have sphingophilous traits, we did not find evidence of moths visiting them. Only native and exotic bees visited the flowers of this species, though with a low number of visits. Therefore, nocturnal visitors were not registered as pollinators of E. thelegona, perhaps because of their low local abundances. On the other hand, bees behaved as inefficient pollinators of E. thelegona due to their foraging behavior, which moves pollen within individuals. A pollen-addition experiment revealed that there is no fruit production at short distances among ramets. Therefore, the combination of self-incompatibility, low flower production and low local abundance of pollinators could account for the low fruit production observed in this species. This finding suggests that populations of E. thelegona persist by clonality and that they tend toward the loss of sexuality.  相似文献

The considerable floral diversity present in the cactus family has often been associated with the specificity of its pollinators. However, many cactus pollination systems are generalized as their flowers are pollinated by a wide spectrum of animals. For example, cactus species with white flowers, nocturnal anthesis and extended floral cycles would present generalized pollination systems in which both nocturnal and diurnal visitors could be effective pollinators. In this article, we tested this hypothesis by studying the pollination biology of Echinopsis schickendantzii, an Andean cactus with sphingophilous flowers. In addition, we evaluated whether the cactus’s pollination system is complementary or redundant regarding the relative contributions of nocturnal and diurnal pollinators. Specifically, we studied the floral cycle, the reproductive system and the pollination effectiveness of floral visitors. The flowers of E. schickendantzii are self-incompatible; they opened at crepuscule and have an extended floral cycle. Moths were frequent visitors at night, whereas bees were frequent visitors during the day; both were effective pollinators of the cactus. Our results indicated that the flowers of this species present phenotypic, functional and ecological generalization, and their fruit set is determined by the contributions of both pollinator functional groups, i.e., they have complementary pollination systems. These results support the hypothesis that cacti in the extra-tropical deserts of South America have generalized pollination systems.  相似文献

Located in central South America, the Chaco is a large subtropical dry forest characterized by plants with xeromorphic features, including numerous cacti. In the Brazilian Chaco at the northeasternmost part of the Chaquenian region, Echinopsis rhodotricha (Cactaceae, Trichocereeae) is one of the species threatened by intense deforestation caused by expanding pastureland. This study characterizes the microsatellite loci isolated from E. rhodotricha and cross-amplification in thirteen other cactus species. Twelve microsatellite loci were developed from an enriched genomic library. Eight of these were polymorphic and characterized in 48 individuals from three E. rhodotricha populations. The loci showed a mean of 3.2 alleles per locus and overall levels of expected and observed heterozygosities ranging from 0.00 to 0.83 and 0.00 to 0.66, respectively. Five loci showed significant departures from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and also exhibited signs of null alleles. Cross-amplification in other Cactaceae species was successful, ranging from one (Ferocactus latispinus, Cacteae and Harrisia adscendens, Trichocereeae) to twelve loci (Echinopsis calochlora, Trichocereeae). The development of these microsatellite markers will contribute to investigations of population structure, genetic diversity, and gene flow in E. rhodotricha populations, as well as in other cactus species, providing information useful for the creation and delimitation of conservation areas in the Brazilian Chaco region.  相似文献

Paracytic and anisocytic types of mature stomata are found inthe leaf of Aganosma dichotoma. Stomata with one guard cell,stomata with degenerated guard cells, and contiguous stomataare common. Stomata with arrested pore development are alsofound in certain cases. A single guard cell without any porehas not been designated as a stoma with one guard cell in thepresent investigation. Ontogeny of contiguous stomata have beentraced. Subsidiary cells are, morphologically, just like theircontiguous guard cells. Subsidiary cells may retain their shapeand contents even when their contiguous stoma becomes mature,or may change their shape and lose their contents. They mayor may not divide. Subsidiary cells form a whorl of more thantwo subsidiary cells around a stoma by their divisions. Degenerationof guard cell(s)— their contents and nuclei—havebeen traced. In certain cases guard cells divide forming morethan two guard cells associated to a single pore. Cytoplasmicconnections are found between two guard cells of nearby stomata,and between a guard cell and an epidermal cell. Alcohol and petrol extracts of the seeds of Aframomum danielli inhibit the soya 5-lipoxygenase enzyme and thus may show antiinflammatory activity. Compounds isolated from the active fractions were shown to be long chain polyprenyl benzoquinone derivatives. Phytylplastoquinone was isolated from the petrol extract and plastoquinone-7 (heptaplastoquinone) from the alcohol extract. The presence of these two known benzoquinones in A. danielli and their ability to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase are reported here for the first time.  相似文献

Effective seed dispersal is essential to plant reproductive success. In this study, we evaluated the fruiting phenology, fruit traits, and seed dispersal of the endangered globose cactus Melocactus lanssensianus in the Brazilian Caatinga over 1-year period. We carried out monthly phenological monitoring, focal observations, and germination experiments, to identify the effective seed dispersers of this cactus. M. lanssensianus exhibited a continuous, non-seasonal fruiting pattern, with peaks during both the dry and rainy seasons. We observed seed dispersal by Tropidurus semitaeniatus and T. hispidus lizards. In 116 h of focal observations, lizards made 76 visits during different times of day, with a mean dispersal distance of 5 m. Both lizard species showed more frugivory interactions in the dry season, with peak visits in water-stressed months. We collected 132 intact and viable seeds from 29 fecal samples, specifically from T. semitaeniatus (N?=?20 scats; 122 seeds) and from T. hispidus (N?=?9 scats; 10 seeds). Germination experiments with seeds consumed by T. semitaeniatus, washed seeds and control seeds revealed that 85% of seeds found in T. semitaeniatus feces germinated compared to 41% of the control seeds. Frequency, pattern of visits and germination rates indicate T. semitaeniatus is an effective seed disperser of M. lanssensianus. Continuous production of fleshy fruits and environmental conditions of the Caatinga ecosystem favor the close dependent mutualistic interaction reported here.

Aim

We sought to determine if the present fragmentary distribution of the giant columnar cactus Echinopsis terscheckii in tropical drylands is a relict of a previously more widespread range during cold and dry phases of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).

Location

Tropical and subtropical dry ecotonal areas of northern and central Andes of Argentina.

Methods

We combined ecological niche models (ENM) with molecular polymorphisms of isozymes and DNA sequences. We collected samples from 30 individuals at 24 locations for genetic analysis covering a wide range of environmental conditions. We sequenced the nuclear ITS and three non‐coding regions of the chloroplast DNA and we resolved 15 isozyme loci. Potential distribution was modelled using 88 E. terscheckii presence training records and a reduced set of 10 modern bioclimatic variables. LGM and the Mid‐Holocene distributions were derived by projecting bioclimatic data under present to past environmental conditions according to CCSM4 and MIROC‐ESM Global Climate Models.

Results

We detected high isozyme diversity towards the south. The multivariate cluster analysis yielded two groups of populations that were geographically concordant with the DNA haplotypes located north and south of a divide at 27°S. Distribution models show range expansion during the LGM in two north and south areas separated by a gap of low suitability at 27°S. Suitable areas in the south were close to current populations, while in the north, populations survived in more disjunct locations that probably suffered from founder effects. In contrast, Mid‐Holocene bioclimatic conditions were relatively unsuitable in the south.

Main conclusions

Our results suggest that the divergence of north and south groups of E. terscheckii populations reflect long‐lasting persistence through climatic cycles that were reinforced by the presence of an orogenic divide at mid‐latitudes. Latitudinally divergent groups of populations should be treated as distinct evolutionary significant units that deserve independent conservation actions. Increased genetic diversity and inbreeding towards the south may guide setting up priorities for the long‐term protection of a dominant element of drylands as E. terscheckii.  相似文献

The analgesic effect and possible mechanism(s) of action of 50-200 mg/kg of the aqueous seed extract of H. umbellata (HU) were investigated in different experimental models of analgesia using the tail flick, tail immersion, acetic acid-induced writhing tests and formalin-induced algesia. Oral pre-treatment with 50-200 mg/kg of HU caused significant and dose related analgesic effect in the treated rats in all the experimental models used. This analgesia was mediated via central and peripheral mechanisms. Overall, the results showed that HU possesses analgesic effect which lends support to its folkloric use in the local management of pain.  相似文献

Aiming to estimate the rate of exploitation of the floral resources of Sparattosperma leucanthum (Vell.) K. Schum. as well as the interaction with their floral visitors in the pollination, the number of visits by flower was sampled, according to the type of visitation, the collected resource and the visitor's behavior during the forage for flowers. The floral visitors were grouped into seven guilds, organized in decreasing order of benefit to the S. leucanthum flower's pollination: effective pollinator, occasional pollinator, endogamic pollinator, generalist visitor, thievery visitor, thievery-pillager ant and pillager visitor. The total of 48.2 +/- 8.84 visits were recorded by flower. Nearly 50% of the visits resulted in nectar thief or pillage, which posed some problems to the reproduction of S. leucanthum, such as the drop in the attractiveness to pollinators and the harm to the flower's reproductive tissues. Trigona spinipes (Fabr.) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) was considered the most harmful species owing to the high frequency of pillage and forage. Bombus sp1, however, was probably the species that pollinated S. lecanthum flowers the most, making use of the crossed pollination.  相似文献

Summary A rapid micropropagation system was established forHolostemma annulare (Roxb.) K. Schum., (H. ada-kodien R. Br. ex Schult; Asclepiadaceae), a rare medicinal plant. Shoot tips (0.5–0.8 cm) and terminal and basal nodes (1.0–1.5 cm) harvested from actively growing shoots of conventionally raised plants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with various concentrations of 6-benzyladenine (BA) and α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Multiple shoot formation (3.8) was observed in 68% of basal nodes cultured on medium with optimum concentration of 4.43 μM BA and 0.54 μM NAA after 8 wk. Terminal nodes were not suitable for inducing multiple shoots. Irrespective of the orientation (vertical/horizontal), all shoot tip explants responded with a single shoot in all the combinations of plant growth regulators tried. Effects of other cytokinins (kinetin and 2-isopentenyladenine) and auxins [indole-3-acetic acid and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA)] to enhance the regeneration potential of basal nodes were analyzed. Shoots were multiplied by subculture of basal nodes and stumps (the original explant tissue free of shoots, but with remnant axillary, meristem and two or three protruding buds) in a reduced concentration of BA (2.21 μM) and NAA (0.27 μM). Liquid medium for multiplication was found to be ineffective due to a high degree of hyperhydricity. To make the multiplication process cost effective, culture bottles with polypropylene, caps were used for multiplication. The best root induction (75%) and survival (80%) was achieved on 0.5 strength MS medium supplemented with 1.48 μM IBA. Field-established plants had uniform growth habit traits in terms of height of plants and number, length, and weight of the tuberous roots.  相似文献

Endophytic fungi live within the healthy tissues of plants and can promote host species tolerance to different environmental stresses. However, most studies have been of plants in humid environments, and there are few reports of the benefits of such associations for plants of extreme environments. Our aims were to identify endophytic fungi using morphological taxonomy, to explore richness and estimate species frequency in a cactus, C. jamacaru, in Brazilian tropical dry forest (Caatinga). We thus identified 59 taxa, corresponding to 69.7 % of the total number of isolates; the other 30.3 % were sterile mycelia. Cladosporium cladosporioides and Fusarium oxysporum were the species most commonly isolated, followed by Acremonium implicatum, Aureobasidium pullulans, Trichoderma viride, Chrysonilia sitophila, and Aspergillus flavus. Forty-seven species are recorded for the first time as endophytic fungi of cacti, and 18 others as endophytes for Brazil; this suggests that C. jamacaru harbors a highly diverse fungal community as measured by a diversity index. However, species accumulation curves suggest that our study still underestimates endophyte diversity because it does not provide an exhaustive sample. To our knowledge, this is the first report of endophytic fungi from C. jamacaru in tropical dry forests.  相似文献

Embryos excised from fresh seed had a moisture content of about37% (fr. wt.), 7% above that of the whole seed: mainly as aresult of the dryness of the seed coat. When cultured for 14d at 26°C embryo growth ranged from unorganized to fullyorganized. Embryos which had been directly surface-sterilizedexhibited lower fully organized growth than aseptically excisedembryos. During desiccation of the whole seed at 15°C and 15% r.h.moisture loss from the embryo was slow until the embryo reacheda mean critical moisture content for fully organized growthin vitro of about 30%. After this point the rate of moistureloss increased, quickly diminishing the moisture content differentialbetween the embryo and the whole seed. No such shoulder in theembryo desiccation curve was observed when using a low viability(7%) seed batch. When dried below 30% moisture content, suchaseptically excised embryos increasingly exhibited unorganizedgrowth in vitro, with only root meristem survival (46%) at 13%moisture content. In contrast, a much higher level of root meristem survival (84%of control) was observed when aseptically excised embryos wererapidly desiccated to 13% moisture content, using a flow ofsterile air. However, the benefits of rapid drying were lostif the embryos were directly surface-sterilized prior to desiccation.Furthermore, 80% of aseptically excised embryos which survivedrapid desiccation to 20% moisture content exhibited root meristemsurvival following subsequent cryopreservation. Recently, a new cactus was discovered in an area of the Caatinga, a tropical dry forest of north‐eastern Brazil. Although this discovery is excellent news, Melocactus sergipensis is critically endangered because it is affected by deforestation of native vegetation and chemicals used in the maize crop, next to the holotype locality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seed germination and seedling survival of the newest Brazilian cactus. All germination treatments were performed at room temperature and white light or continuous darkness. For the evaluation of establishment, 50 seedlings were examined at 30‐day intervals for 5 months. I did not observe seed germination of M. sergipensis in continuous darkness, which shows that the newly discovered species is positive photoblastic. However, a high germinability was observed under white light (80.0 ± 10.8%), indicating that the seeds of the newly discovered species are able to germinate and the light is needed for seed germination. After 5 months, seedling mortality was less than 5%. These results show that the seedlings of the newly discovered cactus can be produced in a glasshouse, providing support for studies on ex situ conservation of a species that could become extinct in the near future.  相似文献

  • Opuntia (Cactaceae) is known for high rates of hybridization and ploidisation, resulting in the formation of new species. The occurrence of two sympatric and closely related species of Opuntia, O. elata and O. retrorsa, in Brazilian Chaco enabled us to test the hypothesis that pre‐zygotic reproductive isolation mechanisms operate in both species.
  • We monitored the flowering period, as well as floral biology, and compared the morphological variation of floral structures through measurements, performed intra‐ and interspecific cross‐pollination tests, and recorded the guild of floral visitors and pollinators.
  • Flowering was seasonal and highly synchronous. Floral biology exhibits similar strategies, and although floral morphology differs significantly in many of the compared structures, such morphological variation does not result in the selection of exclusive pollinators. Floral visitors and pollinators are oligolectic bees shared by both species. Opuntia elata and O. retrorsa are self‐compatible. While interspecific cross‐pollination (bidirectional) resulted in germination, the pollen tube did not penetrate the stigma.
  • Opuntia elata and O. retrorsa are closely related; however, they are isolated and do not hybridise in Brazilian Chaco. We found that both have weak pre‐pollination barriers, but that they are strongly isolated by pollen–pistil incompatibility, i.e. post‐pollination barrier.
