Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the impact of feeding status and maternal age on egg load of Cotesia marginiventris (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a solitary, koinobiont endoparasitoid of noctuid pests. Egg load was defined as the number of mature (i.e., fully-chorionated) eggs found in the ovaries and oviducts. Significantly more mature eggs were stored in honey-fed than starved females. For honey-fed females, egg load increased within several days of isolation from hosts. This study suggests that C. marginiventris is weakly synovigenic because females emerge with a considerable number of mature eggs and are capable of maturing many more eggs. Feeding on a suitable source of carbohydrate should increase the egg load (i.e., potential fecundity) of this insect within 3–4 days in an in vivo rearing system.

Anaphes iole Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is a solitary egg parasitoid of Lygus bugs (Heteroptera: Miridae) in North America. This research considered factors that might impact the egg load of lab-cultured A .iole females, reared from Lygus hesperus Knight egg patches. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) egg load was related to body size and not affected by female age, and (2) egg load depletion was not affected by mate presence and time (in days) that females were exposed to host patches. Initial egg load averaged 48 mature eggs and no immature eggs were detected in the ovarioles of dissected females. Egg load was neither related to body size (hind tibia or forewing length) nor affected significantly by age (0, 1 or 2days old honey-fed females). Mate presence (females with or without males) and exposure time (1, 3 or 5days on the same host patch) had no effect on egg load depletion. Females usually depleted most of their egg load within 24h. From 86 to 92% of females contained less than six mature eggs and no immature eggs after 1, 3 or 5days of exposure to host patches. The results of this study suggest that A. iole females are certainly pro-ovigenic and initial egg load does not correlate with body size or age. Since mated and unmated females deplete most of their egg load in 24h, time-efficient production of progeny may result when ovipositing parasitoids are exposed to suitable hosts for just a few days. The United States Government has the right to retain a non-exclusive, royalty-free license in and to any copyright of this article. Abstract.  To comprehend the significance of multiple mating in female Callosobruchus maculatus , the material-benefits hypothesis is tested, as well as the potential function and mechanism of additional mating for females. The results show that longevity and lifetime fecundity are significantly higher in doubly-mated females, whereas females subject to an interrupted second copulation (which transfers no ejaculate) show resemblance with singly-mated females in lifetime fecundity and daily fecundity, supporting the material-benefits hypothesis. Female lifetime fecundity increases with ejaculate size in doubly-, but not singly-mated females. Doubly-mated females exhibit an immediate increase in fecundity on the day of remating. Moreover, dissection of ovaries after remating shows that the number of unlaid eggs is lower in doubly-mated females in comparison with singly-mated females, whereas the total number of unlaid and laid eggs shows no significant difference. This suggests that the second mating increases the oviposition rate, but not the egg maturation rate in female C. maculatus . Thus, ejaculate serves as a stimulus for oviposition, at least on the remating day. However, because doubly-mated females lay more eggs in total than singly-mated females, doubly-mated females appear to mature more eggs than the singly-mated counterparts. This is attributed to the 'indirect-driven' hypothesis, which states that the reduction in the number of mature eggs in the oviducts brought about by oviposition stimulates the maturation of oocytes in ovarioles to replenish the number of mature eggs.

Raisins were a better source of carbohydrate than sucrose for reproduction by autogenous Culex pipiens. A blood meal increased the number of eggs per raft from 49 autogenously to 114. Eggs of aposymbiotic females produced autogenously did not hatch, but 34% of the eggs were viable if the mosquitoes fed on chickens. With repeated blood meals the number of eggs per raft and the rate of embryonation and hatching declined in each successive gonotrophic cycle. In about 14 of the unhatched eggs of normal females there were no fully developed embryos, while many more of the unhatched eggs of aposymbiotic females contained no evidence of embryonic development. After the fifth blood meal, neither normal nor aposymbiotic insects oviposited. The ovaries of the nulliparous females contained approximately 10% of the potential number of mature terminal oocytes. Proximally in the ovarioles there were dilatations and coiled tracheoles indicating egg resorption. There were fewer parous follicles in aposymbiotic than in normal females. Larval rearing water, i.e., infusion in which larvae had been reared, was more attractive than fresh infusion for oviposition by normal, autogenous mosquitoes. The degree of embryonation of the eggs was lower and the hatching success rate was poorer in fresh infusion than in larval rearing water.

The larvae of the water mitesHydrachna conjecta andH. cruenta are parasitic on corixids.H. conjecta larvae are attached to the underside of the hemelytra of the host and those ofH. cruenta to the legs. The growth ofH. cruenta larvae is less than that of the more shelteredH. conjecta larvae. The infection influences the egg production of the host: infectedSigara striata females have fewer eggs in the ovarioles than uninfected ones. The number of eggs in the ovarioles of the host is related to the size of the parasite. It may be assumed that the presence ofH. conjecta larvae causes a lower fecundity in the host than those ofH. cruenta. InCymatia coleoptrata, a much smaller host thanS. striata, the fecundity is even more impaired by both parasite species. For in the ovarioles of infectedC. coleoptrata females no developed eggs were found at all. So, it is clear that it is anyhow the relation between body size of host and parasite that matters.

A small cage was designed to study the biology and behavior ofAnagrus flaveolus Waterhouse, an important egg parasitoid of the brown planthopper,Nilaparvata lugens (Stal), a pest of rice. A method of rearing moderate numbers of parasitoids on planthopper eggs in the laboratory was developed. Though the mymaridAnagrus flaveolus Waterhouse, a common egg parasitoid of rice planthoppers and leafhoppers all over Asia, reduces pest populations, its biological control potential has largely been overlooked because of its minute size and the lack of suitable techniques to study and rear it in the laboratory.Ôtake (1968, 1969) described some techniques to study the development, longevity and fecundity of a related speciesAnagrus nr.flaveolus Waterhouse. The cages described herein are much simpler to build and more efficient to use compared with those developed earlier. Rearing this important parasitoid in large numbers in the laboratory has not been done before.

We investigated under outdoor conditions and inside a climate chamber: (i) whether Anaphes nitens Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), an egg parasitoid of the Eucalyptus snout beetle, Gonipterus scutellatus Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), experienced egg resorption, and (ii) how various treatments (location, food, and/or host supply) and body size influenced egg load, egg resorption, fecundity, and longevity. One‐day‐old females were mated and randomly assigned to five groups: (A) honey + hosts, (B) water + hosts, (C) only honey, (D) only water, and (E) control females killed at emergence. We compared the egg load of the newly emerged females, which represent the control group (egg load = ovarian eggs present at emergence), with the lifetime egg load (i.e., ovarian eggs + emerged offspring + not emerged offspring) of the females with various host and diet treatments, by dissection of the ovaries to find evidence of egg resorption. All groups reared outdoors had fewer eggs than the control, while indoors there was no significant difference. Outdoors, starved but host‐provided wasps (B) experienced the highest reduction of the lifetime egg load (51%). Groups without access to food (B + D) resorbed more eggs than groups provided with honey (A + C). Females with honey and hosts (A) had the highest lifetime fecundity, but those with water and hosts (B) showed a higher daily realized fecundity. Host‐deprived females with access to food (C) attained the longest lifespan. Our results suggest that under stress conditions, such as low temperature and food shortage, A. nitens females practice egg resorption, probably to save energy.

The lipid metabolism was investigated during six gonotrophic cycles of Aedes aegypti. Females of constant body size were analyzed for their total lipid content: large females with a body size of 41.06 (wing length cubed) and small females with 15.63. Their lipid contents at eclosion were compared to lipid values after two days of sugar-feeding, shortly before a blood meal, after oviposition, of their total egg batches, and again before the next blood meal, with intermittent access to sugar for two days for six gonotrophic cycles.Large females transferred most of their pre-blood meal lipid into the ovaries. Their low lipid content after oviposition was restored by synthesis from intermittent sugar meals. After the third gonotrophic cycle, they withheld more and more of the resynthesized lipid in their fat body, thus gradually reducing their fecundity. Since blood consumption was not altered significantly during these six cycles, age-related reduction of fecundity was clearly caused by limitations of yolk lipid.Small females transferred a considerably smaller, but constant segment of sugar-derived lipids to the ovaries. In both size classes, lipid content per oocyte was constant throughout all cycles with 9 mcal/oocyte in large and 7 mcal/oocyte in small females. Total fecundity reached 450 eggs in large and 280 eggs in small females. Large females that were maintained on water without sucrose took large blood meals from which part of the yolk lipid was synthesized. Extrapolations suggest that only one or two additional gonotrophic cycles would be possible without additional carbohydrate sources, despite lipogenesis from blood protein.

Three hymenopteran parasitoids that attackPlathypena scabra (F.) larvae often oviposit into consecutive instars of the host. We investigated host discrimination by adults and competitive interactions among larvae of these three parasitoid species. Avoidance of superparasitism byCotesia marginiventris (Cresson) andDiolcogaster facetosa Ashmead was tested. Females of each species were presented either withP. scabra parasitized by a different female of the same species 6 h earlier or unparasitizedP. scabra. Under these conditions,C. marginiventris attacked similar numbers of parasitized and unparasitized hosts.D. facetosa attacked 31% fewer parasitized than unparasitizedP. scabra. The avoidance of multiple parasitism byD. facetosa was studied in a similar bioassay. AlthoughD. facetosa females parasitized fewerP. scabra that had been attacked byC. marginiventris 6 h previously, the reduction in parasitism was only about 23%. In competition studies, immatureD. facetosa were better competitors than immatureC. marginiventris. Aleiodes (=Rogas) nolophanae (Ashmead) was an inferior competitor against bothC. marginiventris andD. facetosa when the duration between parasitism events was 1 h, but their competitive ability increased when they multiply parasitized hosts at least 32 h after the initial oviposition.

To analyze the relationship between female body size and lifetime fecundity (LF) in Monochamus urussovii (Fischer), 17 pairs of adults were reared on Picea jezoensis (Sieb. et Zucc.) Carrière twig sections and were allowed to oviposit on Abies sachalinensis (Fr. Schmidt) Masters bolts at 25 °C and 16:8 h light:dark. The means of life span and LF were 42.5 days and 28.2 eggs for fertile and sterile females combined, respectively. The mean lengths of preoviposition and oviposition periods (OPs) of fertile females were 12.1 and 28.1 days, respectively. The potential fecundity was estimated to be 72.1. Path analysis showed that female body size, i.e., mass and elytral length, had positive effects on LF through the oviposition rate but not through the OP. Ovariole number was 24 and did not vary according to body size, indicating a higher egg productivity per ovariole in large females than in small ones. Higher egg productivity per ovariole in large females is true for each of three other synovigenic lamiine beetles with an almost fixed number of ovarioles. The body size-dependent egg productivity per ovariole is considered to be one of the reasons for the body size–LF correlation in synovigenic species with a fixed ovariole number.

In the Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, the number of ovarioles, and hence the maximum number of eggs developed in each ovarian cycle, is a linear function of adult size (headwidth). Field females have a mean headwidth of 3.0 mm (range=2.30–3.50 mm) and a mean potential fecundity/cycle of 232 eggs (range=111–318 eggs). Realised fecundity is influenced by the quality and amount of protein in the adult diet. All field females appear to have the same minimum protein requirement for egg maturation, i.e., whatever their size (potential fecundity) females must obtain sufficient protein to mature at least 110 eggs in order to become gravid. Females whose protein intake exceeds this minimum but falls short of the amount needed for maturation of their full egg complements resorb some of their oocytes and mature the remainder. Since potential fecundity increases with fly size, large females resorb more oocytes than small females under suboptimal protein regimes, i.e., the proportion of oocytes resorbed increases with fly size. Under field conditions, females rarely matured full complements of eggs, which indicates a general shortage of protein-rich material. The mean reduction in fecundity of field females during these studies was 53.4 eggs/cycle (23.2%).

Understanding thephenology of biological control agents iscritical for developing effective rearingmethods. In the case of Galerucellacalmariensis L, a biological control agentintroduced against purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), the presence of anobligatory diapause affects successful rearing.G. calmariensis individuals were rearedfrom egg to adult under four differentcombinations of long and short photoperiods. Two weeks after adult emergence, individualsfrom each treatment were dissected to check forovary development and presence of developedeggs as indicators of overwintering induction.Individuals treated under short photoperiodthroughout their lifetime were found to havesmaller ovaries and few developed eggs, indicating an effective overwinteringinduction. The adult stage of G.calmariensis was determined to be the stagesensitive to photoperiod, as evidenced byreduction in ovary size, decreasedoverwintering mortality and increasedpost-overwintering fecundity in individualstreated as adults with short daylength. Increased post-overwintering fecundity whendiapause was effectively induced can increasethe efficiency of rearing programs for G. calmariensis and other weed biological controlagents with a reproductive diapause.

The reproductive tract of the parasitoidMicroctonus hyperodae was found to comprise 6.1±0.2 ovarioles containing a total of 40–60 oöcytes. After oviposition into its hostListronotus bonariensis, the parasitoid's egg volume increased by 205 times prior to hatching. At 19.1°C ovipositingM. hyperodae survived for a mean 21±4 days and laid a mean of 48±8 eggs.M. hyperodae collected from Colonia, Uruguay laid a mean of 62±15 eggs which was significantly more than the other ecotypes. Under caging conditions with an ample supply of hosts,M. hyperodae laid 51% of its eggs in the first 72 hours and on average 41% of the species' life-span occurred after the exhaustion of its egg supply. Minimum temperature forM. hyperodae oviposition was found to be c. 5°C; beyond this the rate of increase in egg-laying was approximately linear until 30°C whereafter the rate fell abruptly. There was effectively no egg-laying at 39°C. The parasitoid showed no preference for one host sex or the other either in the laboratory or under field conditions. Compared to otherMicroctonus spp.,M. hyperodae appeared to show low fecundity and high longevity. The adaptive implications of this are discussed.

Individuals of three Anastrepha species: A. obliqua, A. ludens, and A. serpentina (Diptera: Tephritidae), were sorted according to pupal weight in cohorts of large and small flies. Demographic parameters and reproductive patterns and heterogeneity were determined for each cohort. Large flies of the three species presented greater expectation of life and gross fecundity rates. A. ludens was the species with the longest life span (expectation of life of large adults was 110 days) and the greatest gross fecundity rates (1597 eggs/female for the large flies). While, A. obliqua had the shortest mean age of reproduction (33 days), and the greatest daily egg production (14 eggs/female/day). Net fecundity was similar in these two. A. serpentina had lower fecundity rates.Reproductive information for each size and each species include: age-by-parity relations, fraction of sexually mature life in which females lay eggs, and frequency distribution of individual egg production. Results demonstrate that even under constant laboratory conditions and using standard artificial hosts, there is a great deal of life history variation among these Anastrepha species and among other tephritid fruit flies.

Anaphes iole Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is a solitary egg parasitoid of Lygus bugs (Heteroptera: Miridae) in North America. Circumstantial evidence suggests that A. iole females are strictly proovigenic. This study was designed to determine if honey-fed A. iole females could in fact mature additional eggs if exposed to hosts for a few days then removed from hosts and held at 25 °C for 0, 3, or 6 days. Contrary to expectation, honey-fed A. iole females matured considerably more eggs when deprived of hosts for 3 or 6 days rather than 0 days. This research suggests that A. iole females are not strictly proovigenic. However, they do have proovigenic tendencies, since most females emerge with at least 71% of their potential fecundity.

Adult size, longevity, egg load dynamics and oviposition ofMicroplitis rufiventris Kok. which began their development in the first, second, third (preferred hosts) or fourth (non-preferred hosts) instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) were studied. The parasitoid size was largely determined by the initial host size at parasitism. Non-ovipositing females derived from older hosts lived for longer periods than those derived from younger ones. However, the ovipositing females, irrespective of their size, lived for almost the same periods. At emergence, the oviducts of adult females contain a significant amount of mature eggs available for oviposition for a few hours on eclosion day. Egg load increases during the early phase of adult life. The amount of additional mature eggs and rate of egg maturation per hour was greater for wasps derived from preferred hosts compared with those in females derived from non-preferred hosts. The pattern of egg production in M. rufiventris females depended on the availability of hosts for parasitization. Host-deprived females depleted the egg complement with aging; the longer the host deprivation, the lower the oviduct egg load. Marked reduction in both realized or potential fecundity of host-deprived females was observed following host availability. Host privation for more than 3 days induced a marked deficit fecundity pattern through the female' s life. The realized fecundity was determined by the interaction among host availability, the number of eggs that are matured over the female' s life span, oviposition rate and host size from which the female was derived. These results suggest that: (i) M. rufiventris wasp is a weak synovigenic species; (ii) the maturation of additional eggs is inhibited once the maximum oviduct egg load is reached; (iii) the egg load of the newly emerged female is significantly less than the realized fecundity; and (iv) because M. rufiventris females oviposit fewer eggs when they begin depleting their egg supply at 3 days, augmentative releases will require release immediately following emergence to ensure the highest parasitization rate in the field.

Egg size variation often has large effects on the fitness of progeny in insects. However, many studies have been unable to detect an advantage of developing from large eggs, suggesting that egg size variation has implications for offspring performance only under adverse conditions, such as during larval competition, periods of starvation, desiccation, or when larvae feed on low-quality resources. We test this hypothesis by examining the consequences of egg size variation for survivorship and development of a seed-feeding insect, Stator limbatus, on both a low-quality (Cercidium floridum) and a high-quality (Acacia greggii) host plant. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis. S. limbatus larval performance was affected by egg size only when developing on the poor-quality host (C. floridum); larvae from large eggs survived better on C. floridum than those from small eggs, while there was no evidence of an effect of egg size on progeny development time, body weight, or survivorship when larvae developed on A. greggii. These results indicate intense selection for large eggs within C. floridum-associated populations, but not in A. greggii-associated populations, so that egg size is predicted to vary among populations associated with different hosts. Our results also support this hypothesis; females from a C. floridum-associated population (Scottsdale) laid larger eggs than females from an A. greggii-associated population (Black Canyon City).

We examined longevity, fecundity, and oviposition strategies ofEucelatoria bryani Sabrosky (Diptera: Tachinidae), a gregarious endoparasitoid ofHelicoverpa zea (Boddie) andHeliothis virescens (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Longevity of adult femaleE. bryani was not related to body size. In contrast to longevity, largerE. bryani females had greater potential fecundity than smaller females, as determined by the number of embryonated eggs present in the common oviduct. However, female parasitoid size did not affect primary clutch size (number of eggs deposited in a host). Because embryos in eggs located in the ovisac were larger than those located elsewhere in the common oviduct, maximum primary clutch size may be physiologically limited by the number of fully mature eggs a female has available at one time.E. bryani females adjusted primary clutch size in response to host size, for bothH. zea andH. virescens. This adjustment appears to be adaptive because females did not overexploit hosts by depositing more larvae than a host could support. Adult emergence was not related to host size. Although host weight positively influencedE. bryani progeny weight, increases in progeny size with host size were counterbalanced by increases in primary clutch size with host size.

Diglyphus isaea (Walker) and Neochrysocharis formosa (Westwood) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) are common idiobiont parasitoids of leafminers attacking vegetable crops. They exhibit differing levels of synovigeny, and host feeding enhances their fecundity and longevity. The reproductive systems of these two parasitoids are typical of hymenopteran eulophids, consisting of two ovaries, each usually comprising three polytrophic meroistic ovarioles. Diglyphus isaea possesses two obvious oviduct accessory glands, which are absent in N. formosa. Both parasitoids underwent oosorption when starved, while feeding on host larvae promoted oogenesis and egg maturation. In both, oogenesis and vitellogenesis commenced on the first day of the pupal stage rather than after eclosion. Formation of ovarioles in D. isaea commenced 1 day earlier than in N. formosa. Mature eggs were rarely observed in ovaries of newly emerged D. isaea, but usually a few were present in N. formosa. When hosts (second–third instar Liriomyza sativae larvae) were provided, the number of mature eggs in D. isaea ovaries initially increased and then stabilized, while in N. formosa, the number first increased and then decreased. Diglyphus isaea had fewer but larger eggs than N. formosa did. Thus, synovigenic divergence begins at the pupal stage and may result in different life-history traits of adults.
