The honeydew of Myzus persicae feeding on radish seedlings contains glucose, fructose, trehalose, melezitose and sucrose, of which glucose and fructose are present in radish seedlings. In addition, the honeydew contains eight organic acids, of which seven are present in uninfested seedlings and six are present in infested radish seedlings: of the eighteen phenolic acids in the honeydew, five are present in uninfested radish seedlings. Auxins, gibberellins, growth inhibitors and cytokinins are present in the honeydew. The presence of carbonate and bicarbonate previously recorded in honeydew of M. persicae could not be confirmed, but ammonia is present in fresh honeydew and accounts for its high pH.  相似文献

Two aldimine bonds have been shown to be present as stabilizing cross-links in intact collagen fibres from soft tissues: dehydrohydroxylysinonorleucine as a major component and dehydrolysinonorleucine being present in trace quantities. In the highly insoluble collagens less dehydrohydroxylysinonorleucine is present but the proportion of dehydrolysinonorleucine increases. In elastin the latter aldimine is reduced in vivo to give a more stable cross-link but no comparable reduction could be detected with either of the aldimines present in collagen.  相似文献

The phospholipid distribution across red cell membrane bilayer is asymmetrical. Sphingomyelin and phosphatidylcholine are predominantly present in the outer membrane bilayer, whereas only small amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine and no phosphatidylserine are present in the outer membrane bilayer. The present study, using specific phospholipase, chemical probe, and Russell's viper venom clotting time has found that in neonatal red cells a portion of PS is also present in the outer membrane bilayer.  相似文献

Predator diet is known to influence antipredator behaviour in prey. Yet, it is not clear how antipredator behaviour is affected by diet changes of the predator. We studied the effect of previous and present diet of a predatory mite Typhlodromips swirskii on the antipredator response of its prey, the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. An earlier study showed that adult female whiteflies that had experienced predators, had learned to avoid ovipositing on plants with predators whose previous and present diet consisted of whitefly eggs and immatures. Here, we investigate whether adult whiteflies also avoid plants with predators whose present and/or previous diet consisted of a non-whitefly food source. Adult whiteflies were found not to avoid plants with predators whose present diet consisted of pollen and whose previous diet had consisted of either pollen or whitefly eggs and larvae. They did avoid plants with predators whose present diet consisted of whiteflies and whose previous diet had consisted of pollen, but to a lesser extent than when previous and present diet consisted of whiteflies. In a choice experiment, whiteflies discriminated between plants with predators whose present diet consisted of whiteflies, but that differed in previous diet. Our results show that both previous and present diets of predators are important in eliciting antipredator behaviour.  相似文献

Two new species of Eimeria were observed in the feces of captive white-tailed deer fawns, Odocoileus virginianus, from Alabama. The first new species was easily recognized because of its small size. Sporulated oocysts are spherical, average 10.2 by 10.0 microm, and lack a micropyle and oocyst residuum. Oocysts contain a polar granule and elongate-ellipsoidal sporocysts that measure 6.7 by 3.1 microm. A Stieda body is present on the sporocysts. Oocysts were observed in the feces, and gamonts and oocysts were observed in the jejunum of a month-old fawn from Minnesota that died from enteritis due to this species. Oocysts of this small species were present in 5 of the 6 white-tailed deer fawns examined. Oocysts of a second new species are ellipsoidal and average 29.5 by 24.6 microm. The oocyst encloses an oocyst residuum, polar granule, and elongate-ellipsoidal sporocysts that average 16.0 by 9.0 microm. A Stieda body and substieda body are present on the sporocysts. Oocysts of the second new species were present in 4 of the 6 white-tailed deer fawns examined. Oocysts of E. ivensae are ovoid or flask-like and average 32.0 by 20.8 microm. The oocyst wall is rough, contains a micropyle, and encloses elongate-ellipsoidal sporocysts that average 16.5 by 7.8 microm. A Stieda body is present on the sporocysts. Oocysts of E. ivensae were present in 4 of the 6 white-tailed deer fawns. Oocysts of E. odocoilei are spherical or slightly subspherical and measure 24.7 by 21.5 microm. They enclose ovoid sporocysts that average 12.7 by 8.8 microm. A Stieda and substieda body are present on the sporocyst. Oocysts of E. odocoilei were present in 4 of the 6 white-tailed deer fawns.  相似文献

Adjustment of systematic microarray data biases   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
MOTIVATION: Systematic differences due to experimental features of microarray experiments are present in most large microarray data sets. Many different experimental features can cause biases including different sources of RNA, different production lots of microarrays or different microarray platforms. These systematic effects present a substantial hurdle to the analysis of microarray data. RESULTS: We present here a new method for the identification and adjustment of systematic biases that are present within microarray data sets. Our approach is based on modern statistical discrimination methods and is shown to be very effective in removing systematic biases present in a previously published breast tumor cDNA microarray data set. The new method of 'Distance Weighted Discrimination (DWD)' is shown to be better than Support Vector Machines and Singular Value Decomposition for the adjustment of systematic microarray effects. In addition, it is shown to be of general use as a tool for the discrimination of systematic problems present in microarray data sets, including the merging of two breast tumor data sets completed on different microarray platforms. In the present paper the frequencies of individuals without middle phalangeal hair was found as 55.75% in the Tibetan males and 68.61% in females. Sex differences were noticed in the present sample. Populations of Mongoloid affinity seems to have a marked increase in the frequency of individuals without phalangeal hair and the present Tibetan sample reflects this tendency.  相似文献

The junctions present in the central nervous system (CNS), midgut, silk gland and venom gland of arachnids have been investigated. Special care was taken to try to locate tight junctions in tissue other than CNS but they were not found in any of the other tissues. The detailed structure of the junctions present are discussed. The tight junctions present in CNS are somewhat different in appearance and fracturing behaviour to most vertebrate tight junctions and closely resemble only those found in Urochordates (a non-vertebrate chordate). The two types of septate junctions found in the other tissues belong to the pleated septate and smooth septate classes but show some interesting differences. It appears probable that the septate junctions in Arachnida, Merostomata and Myriopoda have different fracturing properties from those found in other arthropods. The finding that only septate junctions are present in most arachnid tissues, although tight junctions are present in CNS, is discussed in the context of the sealing function of septate junctions in invertebrate tissues.  相似文献

Although the sequence variable loops of the human immunodeficiency virus' (HIV-1) surface envelope glycoprotein (gp120) can exhibit good immunogenicity, characterizing conserved (invariant) cross-strain neutralization epitopes within these loops has proven difficult. We recently developed a method to derive sensitive and specific signature motifs for the three-dimensional (3D) shapes of the HIV-1 neutralization epitopes in the third variable (V3) loop of gp120 that are recognized by human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). We used the signature motif method to estimate the conservation of these epitopes across circulating worldwide HIV-1 strains. The epitope targeted by the anti-V3 loop neutralizing mAb 3074 is present in 87% of circulating strains, distributed nearly evenly among all subtypes. The results for other anti-V3 Abs are: 3791, present in 63% of primarily non-B subtypes; 2219, present in 56% of strains across all subtypes; 2557, present in 52% across all subtypes; 447-52D, present in 11% of primarily subtype B strains; 537-10D, present in 9% of primarily subtype B strains; and 268-D, present in 5% of primarily subtype B strains. The estimates correlate with in vitro tests of these mAbs against diverse viral panels. The mAb 3074 thus targets an epitope that is nearly completely conserved among circulating HIV-1 strains, demonstrating the presence of an invariant structure hidden in the dynamic and sequence-variable V3 loop in gp120. Since some variable loop regions are naturally immunogenic, designing immunogens to mimic their conserved epitopes may be a promising vaccine discovery approach. Our results suggest one way to quantify and compare the magnitude of the conservation.  相似文献

Gonococci were labelled with 125I using the lactoperoxidase system. The amount of label incorporated was similar with all strains including those which appeared capsulated. Electrophoresis on sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gels revealed that the major proteins labelled were those found in outer membrane preparations. Comparison of variants of one strain showed that the major outer membrane protein (protein I) was always present and heavily labelled. The second major protein (protein II) was present in variable amounts but labelling was proportional to the amount present. A third protein (III) was only present in outer membranes from a freshly isolated variant but was present in whole cells of each strain. Protein III was not labelled in whole cells but was labelled in outer membrane preparations suggesting that many membranes have their inner surface exposed. The labelling of a strain adapted to growth in guinea-pig chambers failed to reveal any new major surface proteins. The results demonstrate the variation in surface topography possible with variants of one strain of gonococcus but show that one major protein antigen is always expressed on the surface.  相似文献

A protein present in red cell ghost membranes from reticulocyterich blood disappears from the membrane in vivo as the reticulocytes mature. This protein, with an estimated molecular weight of 33,000, is not present in mature circulating red blood cells. It is not associated with the ribosomes present in the reticulocyte.  相似文献

The morphology of the gills, with their blood supply have been described in Notopterus notopterus and Colisa fasciatus in some detail. Gills are curved and perforated on the dorsolateral and ventrolateral wall of the pharynx. The gills consist of 2 rows of filaments which are stacked one above the other to form a space. The gill filaments are smaller on both the ends and larger in middle. The gill filaments are of pink colour as they are supplied with blood. Gill rakers are large in size in Notopterus notopterus while they are small in Colisa fasciatus. 3 pairs of basibranchials are present in Notopterus notopterus which are covered by median membranous bony plate while 2 basibranchials are present in Colisa fasciatus. 3 pairs of hypobranchials are present in both fishes. 5 pairs of ceratobranchials are present in which Vth ceratobranchial bears teeth. 4 pairs of epibranchials are present. 3 pairs of pharyngobranchials are present in which the tip of the IVth pharyngobranchial bears minute teeth in Notopterus notopterus while in Colisa fasciatus IInd and IIIrd pharyngobranchial bear minute ones. One afferent branchial vessel is present in Notopterus notopterus and Colisa fasciatus in each gill like in other teleostean fishes. One efferent branchial vessel is present in each gill of Notopterus notopterus while in Colisa fasciatus 2 efferent are represented in each gill.  相似文献

Neritoidean gastropods are present in freshwater, brackish andmarine environments, which vary in salinity and exposure todehydration. In this study we examine the structure of the excretory systemof Hawaiian nerites, which indicates possible processes thatenable these gastropods to survive in a wide range of environmentsin the Hawaiian Islands. As is true of other nerites studied to date, the main excretorymechanism of Hawaiian nerites is through filtration of the bloodbetween podocytes in the auricle epicardium, resulting in productionof an ultra-filtrate, which collects in the pericardial cavity.No podocytes are present on the surface of the ventricle ofHawaiian nerites. The reno-pericardial canal conveys the urine tothe kidney, the epithelium of which is composed mainly of acidophiliccells in marine nerites. In brackish and fresh water species,baso-philic cells are present in addition to the acidophiliccells present in marine nerites. It is proposed that the basophilickidney cells allows non-marine nerites to osmoregulate and producea hyperosomotic urine at low salinities. The hemoprotein content of 17 strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum bacteroids from field-grown plants and the corresponding strains of cultured cells was determined spectrally. The major terminal oxidases, cytochromes (cyt) aa3 and o, were present in all strains of cultured cells. cyt aa3 was present in significant amounts in bacteroids only in strains of DNA homology group II. cyt o appeared to be present in bacteroids of all strains, and the average level was the same as in cultured cells. cyt b and c in the membrane fractions were higher in bacteroids of all strains compared with cultured cells. cyt P-450 was present in both the membrane and soluble fractions of bacteroids of most strains. The total P-450 content varied sixfold among strains. A CO-reactive hemoprotein, P-422, was present in the soluble fraction of all strains of cultured cells. P-422 may be a hemoglobinlike protein, and it was present in significant amounts in bacteroids only in DNA homology group I strains.  相似文献

A factor stimulating fowl erythropoiesis in vitro has been isolated from the blood of anemic chick by gel filtration and ion exchange chromatography. This purification procedure yields a preparation whose specific activity is enriched 44 times and which has been relieved of toxic factors present in the crude anemic serum. In vitro erythropoiesis requires addition into the culture medium of erythropoietic stimulating factor and of another factor present in the serum of anemic as well as non-anemic chick. This last factor is lost during purification of the erythropoietic stimulating factor and is not present in fetal calf serum.  相似文献

The water-soluble polysaccharides (SEPS) secreted into the medium by suspension-cultured sycamore cells were examined to determine whether the polysaccharides were the same as those present in the walls of sycamore cells. The SEPS were made more amenable to fractionation by treatment with a highly purified α-1,4-endopolygalacturonase (EPG). The EPG-treated SEPS were fractionated by anion-exchange and gelpermeation chromatography. The following polysaccharides were found: xyloglucan, arabinoxylan, at least two arabinogalactans, a rhamnogalacturonan-II-like polysaccharide, and a polygalacturonic acid-rich polysaccharide. The oligogalacturonide fragments expected from EPG-digested homogalacturonan were also identified. Evidence was obtained for the presence of a rhamnogalacturonan-I-like polysaccharide. All of the above polysaccharides have been isolated from or are believed to be present in sycamore cell walls. Furthermore, all of the noncellulosic polysaccharides known to be present in sycamore cell-walls appear to be present in the SEPS.  相似文献

Mouse neuroblastoma cells grown in medium containing 10 percent fetal bovine serum have negligible amounts of glutathione peroxidase activity. Introduction of selenite to the medium to produce a concentration of 600 nM resulted in a 30-fold increase in the enzyme activity. This increase is directly proportional to the concentration below 60 nM and levels off at concentrations above this value. Selenate produces no increase in enzyme activity when present alone nor does it inhibit induction when present with selenite. Tellurite produces no increase in enzyme activity when present alone but does inhibit induction when present with selenite.  相似文献

In the Pseudomonas fluorescens strain ST the ability to utilize styrene as the sole carbon source is due to the presence of a plasmid, pEG. In the present report we show that pEG contains two inverted repeat sequences and we present evidence indicating that the catabolic genes are localized in these repeats. The region separating the inverted repeats can assume alternative orientations. In the chromosome of strain ST, a 3 kbp region is homologous to sequences present at one end of the plasmid repeats. This region is present in one copy in the chromosome and could be a specific site for integration of the plasmid. We suggest that this sequence, which is present twice in the pEG plasmid and once in the chromosome, might be a transposon-like element.  相似文献

Level of circulating immune complex (IC) in visceral leishmaniasis is much higher than that in control sera. In immunoblot experiment, treatment of kala-azar IC with patient sera showed at least 6 bands of which the band around 55 kDa region was most prominent. The band at 55 kDa is primarily due to the presence of an antigen recognized by its corresponding antibody present in the patient sera. This was confirmed by using radiolabelled antibody from kala-azar patient serum and antipromastigote serum. The heavy chain of IgG originating from IC is also present in the same region which was detected by its recognition with antihuman IgG. The IC gave a band at 55 kDa region with sea-urchin antitubulin. Kala-azar sera also reacted with purified rat brain tubulin. The present results suggest that a tubulin like protein is present at 55 kDa region along with the heavy chain of IgG.  相似文献
