Recurrent connections play an important role in cortical function, yet their exact contribution to the network computation remains unknown. The principles guiding the long-term evolution of these connections are poorly understood as well. Therefore, gaining insight into their computational role and into the mechanism shaping their pattern would be of great importance. To that end, we studied the learning dynamics and emergent recurrent connectivity in a sensory network model based on a first-principle information theoretic approach. As a test case, we applied this framework to a model of a hypercolumn in the visual cortex and found that the evolved connections between orientation columns have a "Mexican hat" profile, consistent with empirical data and previous modeling work. Furthermore, we found that optimal information representation is achieved when the network operates near a critical point in its dynamics. Neuronal networks working near such a phase transition are most sensitive to their inputs and are thus optimal in terms of information representation. Nevertheless, a mild change in the pattern of interactions may cause such networks to undergo a transition into a different regime of behavior in which the network activity is dominated by its internal recurrent dynamics and does not reflect the objective input. We discuss several mechanisms by which the pattern of interactions can be driven into this supercritical regime and relate them to various neurological and neuropsychiatric phenomena.  相似文献

Background: An open challenge of P300-based BCI systems focuses on recognizing ERP signals using a reduced number of trials with enough classification rate.Methods: Three novel methods based on Filter Bank and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) are proposed for the recognition of P300 ERPs using a reduced number of trials. The proposed methods were evaluated with two freely available EEG datasets based on 6x6 speller and were compared with five standard methods: Mean-Amplitude, Step-Wise, Principal Component Analysis, Peak, and CCA.Results: The proposed methods outperform significantly standard algorithms for P300 identification with a maximum AUC of 0.93 and 0.98, and an average of 0.73 and 0.76, using a single trial.Conclusion: Proposed methods based on Filter Bank are robust for the identification of P300 using a reduced number of trials, which could be used in real-time BCI spellers for rehabilitation engineering.  相似文献

Purpose

Working memory (WM) represents the brain’s ability to maintain information in a readily available state for short periods of time. This study examines the resting-state cortical activity patterns that are most associated with performance on a difficult working-memory task.

Methods

Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) band-passed (delta/theta (1–7 Hz), alpha (8–13 Hz), beta (14–30 Hz)) and sensor based regional power was collected in a population of adult men (18–28 yrs, n = 24) in both an eyes-closed and eyes-open resting state. The normalized power within each resting state condition as well as the normalized change in power between eyes closed and open (zECO) were correlated with performance on a WM task. The regional and band-limited measures that were most associated with performance were then combined using singular value decomposition (SVD) to determine the degree to which zECO power was associated with performance on the three-back verbal WM task.

Results

Changes in power from eyes closed to open revealed a significant decrease in power in all band-widths that was most pronounced in the posterior brain regions (delta/theta band). zECO right posterior frontal and parietal cortex delta/theta power were found to be inversely correlated with three-back working memory performance. The SVD evaluation of the most correlated zECO metrics then provided a singular measure that was highly correlated with three-back performance (r = −0.73, p<0.0001).

Conclusion

Our results indicate that there is an association between WM performance and changes in resting-state power (right posterior frontal and parietal delta/theta power). Moreover, an SVD of the most associated zECO measures produces a composite resting-state metric of regional neural oscillatory power that has an improved association with WM performance. To our knowledge, this is the first investigation that has found that changes in resting state electromagnetic neural patterns are highly associated with verbal working memory performance.  相似文献

The P300 (P3) event-related brain potential (ERP) was elicited with a passive tone sequence paradigm and evaluated in 2 studies. Experiment 1 compared ERPs from the passive procedure with those from an active discrimination (oddball) task. The passive sequence paradigm yielded P3 wave forms remarkably similar to those obtained from the active task since both demonstrated central-parietal maximum scalp distributions and virtually identical peak latencies. No differences between tasks were found when ERPs were elicited with subject's eyes open or closed. Experiment 2 compared ERPs from the passive sequence paradigm obtained when subjects were attempting to solve a word puzzle with those from a simple ignore condition. The puzzle-solving secondary task produced a decrease in P3 amplitude relative to the ignore condition, although P3 peak latency was unaffected. These results suggest that the passive sequence paradigm may be a useful and reliable means of eliciting the P3 ERP in subject populations or experimental situations in which an active discrimination task cannot be performed.  相似文献

The P3(00) event-related brain potential (ERP) was elicited with auditory stimuli to compare 2 different discrimination tasks. The oddball paradigm presented both target and standard tones; the single-stimulus paradigm presented at target but no standard tone stimulus. Experiment 1 manipulated target stimulus probability (0.20, 0.50, 0.80) and produced highly similar P3 amplitude and latency results across probability levels for each paradigm. Experiment 2 factorially varied inter-stimulus interval (2 sec, 6 sec) and target stimulus probability (0.20, 0.80). P3 amplitude and latency were highly similar for both the oddball and single-stimulus procedures across all conditions.  相似文献

In everyday life we quickly build and maintain associations between stimuli and behavioral responses. This is governed by rules of varying complexity and past studies have identified an underlying fronto-parietal network involved in cognitive control processes. However, there is only limited knowledge about the neuronal activations during more natural settings like game playing. We thus assessed whether near-infrared spectroscopy recordings can reflect different demands on cognitive control during a simple game playing task. Sixteen healthy participants had to catch falling objects by pressing computer keys. These objects either fell randomly (RANDOM task), according to a known stimulus-response mapping applied by players (APPLY task) or according to a stimulus-response mapping that had to be learned (LEARN task). We found an increased change of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin during LEARN covering broad areas over right frontal, central and parietal cortex. Opposed to this, hemoglobin changes were less pronounced for RANDOM and APPLY. Along with the findings that fewer objects were caught during LEARN but stimulus-response mappings were successfully identified, we attribute the higher activations to an increased cognitive load when extracting an unknown mapping. This study therefore demonstrates a neuronal marker of cognitive control during gaming revealed by near-infrared spectroscopy recordings.  相似文献

P300 was recorded, using an ‘odd ball’ paradigm, in 18 parkinsonian patients before and during dopaminergic monotherapy. The data were compared with those of a homogeneous standard group of 20 subjects.The main finding was an increase in the P300 latency of parkinsonian patients before therapy, which recovered during dopaminergic monotherapy. In 11 voluntary healthy subjects the same therapy did not produce a reduction of the P300 latency.The data are discussed in relation to a possible dopaminergic component in P300 origin.  相似文献

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a peptide hormone that is released from the gut in response to nutrients such as lipids to lower food intake. Here we report that a primary increase of CCK-8, the biologically active form of CCK, in the duodenum lowers glucose production independent of changes in circulating insulin levels. Furthermore, we show that duodenal CCK-8 requires the activation of the gut CCK-A receptor and a gut-brain-liver neuronal axis to lower glucose production. Finally, duodenal CCK-8 fails to lower glucose production in the early onset of high-fat diet-induced insulin resistance. These findings reveal a role for gut CCK that lowers glucose production through a neuronal network and suggest that intestinal CCK resistance may contribute to hyperglycemia in response to high-fat feeding.  相似文献

Hemodynamic properties affected by the passive leg raise test (PLRT) reflect cardiac pumping efficiency. In the present study, we aimed to further explore whether PLRT predicts exercise intolerance/capacity following coronary revascularization. Following coronary bypass/percutaneous coronary intervention, 120 inpatients underwent a PLRT and a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) 2–12 days during post-surgery hospitalization and 3–5 weeks after hospital discharge. The PLRT included head-up, leg raise, and supine rest postures. The end point of the first CPET during admission was the supra-ventilatory anaerobic threshold, whereas that during the second CPET in the outpatient stage was maximal performance. Bio-reactance-based non-invasive cardiac output monitoring was employed during PLRT to measure real-time stroke volume and cardiac output. A correlation matrix showed that stroke volume during leg raise (SVLR) during the first PLRT was positively correlated (R = 0.653) with the anaerobic threshold during the first CPET. When exercise intolerance was defined as an anaerobic threshold < 3 metabolic equivalents, SVLR / body weight had an area under curve value of 0.822, with sensitivity of 0.954, specificity of 0.593, and cut-off value of 1504·10-3mL/kg (positive predictive value 0.72; negative predictive value 0.92). Additionally, cardiac output during leg raise (COLR) during the first PLRT was related to peak oxygen consumption during the second CPET (R = 0.678). When poor aerobic fitness was defined as peak oxygen consumption < 5 metabolic equivalents, COLR / body weight had an area under curve value of 0.814, with sensitivity of 0.781, specificity of 0.773, and a cut-off value of 68.3 mL/min/kg (positive predictive value 0.83; negative predictive value 0.71). Therefore, we conclude that PLRT during hospitalization has a good screening and predictive power for exercise intolerance/capacity in inpatients and early outpatients following coronary revascularization, which has clinical significance.  相似文献

Maximum entropy models are the least structured probability distributions that exactly reproduce a chosen set of statistics measured in an interacting network. Here we use this principle to construct probabilistic models which describe the correlated spiking activity of populations of up to 120 neurons in the salamander retina as it responds to natural movies. Already in groups as small as 10 neurons, interactions between spikes can no longer be regarded as small perturbations in an otherwise independent system; for 40 or more neurons pairwise interactions need to be supplemented by a global interaction that controls the distribution of synchrony in the population. Here we show that such “K-pairwise” models—being systematic extensions of the previously used pairwise Ising models—provide an excellent account of the data. We explore the properties of the neural vocabulary by: 1) estimating its entropy, which constrains the population''s capacity to represent visual information; 2) classifying activity patterns into a small set of metastable collective modes; 3) showing that the neural codeword ensembles are extremely inhomogenous; 4) demonstrating that the state of individual neurons is highly predictable from the rest of the population, allowing the capacity for error correction.  相似文献

The neurobiology of P300 is still a subject of controversy. P300 amplitude appears to be modulated by multiple neurotransmitter systems, especially dopaminergic, noradrenergic as well as cholinergic and GABAergic. In this study, we investigated the relationship between P300 amplitude and catecholaminergic neurotransmission as assessed by the growth hormone (GH) response to clonidine and apomorphine challenges in 20 major depressive patients. Results showed a correlation of P300 amplitude with the apomorphine test (r = 0.54; P = 0.01), but not with the clonidine test (r = 0.22; NS). This study supports a role for dopamine in the neurobiological modulation of P300 amplitude.  相似文献

Event-Related potentials are a simple non-invasive neurophysiological method enabling to comprehend certain aspects of the cognitive processing of information in humans. The best-known component of Event-Related Potentials is the so-called P3 wave. Alterations in the parameters of P300 wave have been discovered in certain personality disorders and in persons with impulsively aggressive behaviour. The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of these parameters, especially an amplitude and latency in the place of Pz electrode. We examined 15 persons with the impulsive aggressive behaviour and compared them to a population comparable of normal age, gender and approximate degree of education. We used P300 auditory and a neuropsychological Eysenck IVE battery. The results showed that significantly lower amplitudes had been found in the aggressive impulsive subjects as compared to the control group. No statistically significant differences have been discovered in the latency. These results seem to confirm previous studies.  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were elicited with an auditory discrimination paradigm in 20 adult female subjects on the first day of their menstrual cycles and approximately 14 days later. The amplitude and latency of the N1, P2, N2 and P3 (P300) components were measured for the two assessment times. No differences in either amplitude or latency for any of the components were observed as a function of menstrual cycle. Half the subjects who took oral contraceptives were compared to the other half who did not. No differences or interactions between these subgroups were obtained for any component amplitude or latency. It was concluded that menstrual cycle and use of oral contraceptives do not affect the P3 or other ERP components.  相似文献

The P300 (P3) event-related brain potential (ERP) was elicited in 16 demented patients presumed to be in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease and 16 normal control subjects well matched for age, sex, education and occupational level. All subjects performed a simple auditory discrimination task in which a target tone was presented randomly on 20% of the trials. P3 amplitude was smaller and peak latency longer for the Alzheimer patients compared to control subjects. A second ERP task also was administered in which the target tone occurred 50% of the time. Analysis of the target/standard tone presentation sequences indicated that the Alzheimer patient group demonstrated less amplitude difference between the target and standard sequences and longer overall latencies compared to the control group. The results that the P3 ERP component from auditory stimuli can provide useful information about Alzheimer's disease during its early stages.  相似文献
