This work examines the influence of mating on ovarian follicle development in Triatoma infestans. The observations were carried out on both virgin and mated females, which were killed at various times after their emergence. There was no difference in the ovarian development of both experimental groups during the first gonadotrophic cycle. By the 7th day mated females as well as virgin females showed vitellogenic oocytes. The coriogenesis and ovulation process began on the 13th day after imaginal moulting. However we could observe that egg-laying was dependent on mating. Mated females laid eggs whereas virgin females did not lay eggs. However ovarian production was significantly greater in the mated females. It is suggested that in T. infestans mating stimulates egg-laying but it does no influence the oogenesis and ovulation process.  相似文献

Morphometric studies were made on corpora allata of the cockroach Diploptera punctata from animals in which increasing gland size is not coupled to hormone synthesis (ovariectomized mated females; last-instar larvae) and in which gland size is coupled to hormone synthesis (normal mated and virgin females; penultimate-instar larvae). Cell number, gland volume, and juvenile hormone synthesis were measured. From electron micrographs, nuclear, cytoplasmic, and extracellular volumes; and cell membrane area were calculated; and fine structure described. Low-activity glands of ovariectomized mated females resembled high-activity glands from mated females in high cell number, large overall and cytoplasmic volume, and low nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio; they differed in having organelles typical of low-activity glands, mitochondria with dense matrices and large whorls of smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Inactive lastinstar larval glands resembled mated ovariectomized, female glands in increased cell number and organelles characteristic of inactive glands; however, their nuclearcytoplasmic volume ratio was much higher. Penultimate cytoplasmic volume ratio was much higher. Penultimate larval glands with high activity per cell resembled active glands of normal mated females. Ovariectomy did not change morphometric parameters of virgin female glands; thus mating results in increase in size of adult female glands whereas the growing ovary is needed for changes in mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum associated with high juvenile hormone synthesis.  相似文献

Mating is critical for the expression of oviposition and maternal care in the earwig, Euborellia annulipes; additionally, mating diminishes receptivity to additional mating and promotes a decline in juvenile hormone synthesis at the end of the gonadotrophic cycle (in contrast to most insect species wherein mating stimulates juvenile hormone production). We report here that severance of the ventral nerve cord of virgin females similarly promoted egg deposition and maternal care of eggs, diminished mating receptivity, and elicited a timely decline in juvenile hormone biosynthesis. Mating of intact females to adult males that were castrated as larvae did not abolish oviposition; however, clutch size was reduced, and no eggs developed. Such castrated males had smaller seminal vesicles than did intact males, presumably attributable to lack of sperm in castrated males. In contrast, mating of intact females to males castrated on day 1 of adult life did not reduce clutch size compared with those of sham-operated animals and did not abolish fertilization; in fact, these castrated males produced viable offspring after six matings. These results are consistent with the notion that ventral nerve cord severance mimicked mating in intact animals. Following mating, the ventral nerve cord likely is a conduit to release the brain from inhibiting oviposition and maternal care. The presence of sperm in the spermatheca is not necessary for release of this inhibition but may modulate clutch size.  相似文献

The effects of six sugar resources (fructose, glucose, sucrose, trehalose, raffinose and honey) on the longevity, oviposition performance and nutrition levels of Meteorus pulchricornis, a thelytokous larval endoparasitoid of the common cutworm Spodoptera litura were examined under laboratory conditions. Female adults of M. pulchricornis fed 1 M fructose, glucose, trehalose or sucrose solutions survived longer than those fed on other sugar solutions or water. When provided with honey or sucrose solutions, the female parasitoids laid more offspring than those fed other sugar diets or the control. The body size of offspring driven from honey-, fructose-, sucrose-, and glucose-fed females, along with water-fed group, were larger than the trehalose- and raffinose-fed females. However, the emergence rates of all offspring generated from different sugars- and water-fed females were similar. When separately given honey, sucrose or fructose, M. pulchricornis females accumulated fructose at a higher level than the other groups. Parasitoid wasps fed trehalose solution accumulated the highest level of total sugar. Glycogen levels and lipid content were highest at emergence and then decreased across all diets. In addition, females fed on trehalose had the highest level of glycogen compared to other sugar diets and water control regardless of emergency level. Females fed trehalsoe, fructose, and glucose solutions had a higher level of lipid than those fed other sugar solutions and water at life end. The outcome of this study can benefit both laboratory rearing and management interventions that improve sugar sources for the parasitoid in the field.  相似文献

Methoprene (an analogue of juvenile hormone) application and feeding on a protein diet is known to enhance male melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquillett (Diptera: Tephritidae), mating success. In this study, we investigated the effect of these treatments on male B. cucurbitae's ability to inhibit female remating. While 14‐d‐old females were fed on protein diet, 6‐d‐old males were exposed to one of the following treatments: (i) topical application of methoprene and fed on a protein diet; (ii) no methoprene but fed on a protein diet; (iii) methoprene and sugar‐fed only; and (iv) sugar‐fed, 14‐d‐old males acted as controls. Treatments had no effect on a male's ability to depress the female remating receptivity in comparison to the control. Females mated with protein‐deprived males showed higher remating receptivity than females first mated with protein‐fed males. Methoprene and protein diet interaction had a positive effect on male mating success during the first and second mating of females. Significantly more females first mated with sugar‐fed males remated with protein‐fed males and females first mated with methoprene treated and protein‐fed males were more likely to remate with similarly treated males. Females mating latency (time to start mating) was significantly shorter with protein‐fed males, and mating duration was significantly longer with protein‐fed males compared with protein‐deprived males. These results are discussed in the context of methoprene and/or dietary protein as prerelease treatment of sterile males in area‐wide control of melon fly integrating the sterile insect technique (SIT).  相似文献

Abstract. The involvement of the endocrine system in courtship, mating, maternal behaviour and the gonadotrophic cycle was studied in the earwig, Euborellia annulipes, after application of JH III and, alternatively, precocene II. Topical application of 35 or 122 μg of JH III to newly eclosed females advanced the onset of courtship behaviour from 6.6 ± 1.3 days in acetone-treated controls to 1.4 ± 2.8 and 0.5 ± 2.5 days, respectively. Application of 6 μg of JH III had no effect on the onset of courtship behaviour. Applications of Juvenile Hormone had no significant effect on the age at first mating nor on the duration of mating, though the trend is towards advanced onset. The age at first oviposition was advanced by hormone treatment; clutch size and the proportion of offspring hatching was reduced by hormone treatment. The interclutch interval, size and proportion hatching of the second clutch were not affected by hormone treatment. Topical application of 50 μg of JH III to females on the day of oviposition shortened the total duration of maternal care from 15.4 ± 0.5 to 5.3 ± 1.7 days; whereas in acetone-treated and precocene II-treated groups maternal care lasted 16.1 ± 1.9 and 13.8 ± 1.6 days, respectively. The duration of maternal care was positively correlated with number of offspring hatching and fledging. In a corollary experiment, topical application of JH III significantly enhanced the onset of the second gonadotrophic cycle as assessed by basal follicle length; application of 20 μg of precocene II, either singly or in repeated doses, did not delay growth of basal follicles. Finally, repeated application of as much as 80 μg of precocene II had no effect on basal follicle length, nor on ovary wet weights. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that intermediate to high titres of JH are associated with oocyte growth, mating, and the cessation of maternal care; low titres of JH appear to be associated with the period of maternal behaviour and slow ovarian follicle development.  相似文献

During the ovarian cycle of the cockroach, Diploptera punctata, a mitotic wave occurs in the corpora allata before an increase in gland volume and juvenile hormone (JH) synthesis. Previous studies have demonstrated that the brain inhibits mitosis and JH synthesis in corpus allatum (CA) cells until adult females have mated. Herein, we report that chilling stress effectively suppresses mating induced proliferation of CA cells. In mated females, chilling on melting ice for 0.5-3 hours caused a strong, dose-dependent decrease in mitotic activity. In insects chilled for 3 hours, although the mitotic wave in the CA was practically abolished, CA volume and JH synthesis finally reached peak levels typical of unchilled insects, despite a 2-day delay. Consequently, oocyte maturation and oviposition were also delayed by 2 days, yet in both chilled and unchilled insects, peak values of basal oocyte length were the same. By allowing virgin females to mate on different days after chilling, we found that the chilling effect could be retained in the insect body for at least 2 days. During this period, signals from mating could not effectively remove inhibition of CA cell proliferation. Unilaterally disconnecting the CA from the brain revealed that chilling stress mediated CA cell proliferation via the brain, and did not directly affect the CA.  相似文献

Adult females of the cockroach Blattella germanica have clearly-defined feeding cycles related to oogenesis. In the first cycle, food ingestion precedes volumetric increase in the corpora allata, which in turn precedes juvenile hormone production, whereas starved females do not develop the corpora allata and produce very low amounts of juvenile hormone. When the second gonadotropic cycle is provoked by removing the ootheca, the first event observed is an increase in food consumption, followed by an increase in corpora allata volume and activity. However, this increase in corpora allata volume (and activity) does not occur if females are starved, thus indicating that the ootheca in the genital chamber inhibits primarily feeding, and indirectly corpora allata development and activity. Corpora allata volume in isolated heads from starved and decapitated females was able to increase to levels similar to fed controls, but this increase was abolished by allatostatin treatment. We suggest that a factor produced in the thoracico-abdominal compartment, which reaches the head mainly through a nervous pathway, is released during starvation and inhibits corpora allata development. This factor may stimulate allatostatin production or release, or may well be allatostatin itself.  相似文献

Summary

In unfed virgin or mated females of Rhodnius prolixus, a proportion of females makes some eggs. Vitellogenesis in this prefeed period resembles closely that in fed females: it involves the activation of follicle cells, the development of spaces between the follicle cells, and a dependency on the corpus allatum and juvenile hormone. It is concluded that juvenile hormone is normally secreted in the period between emergence and the first adult blood meal. Eggs are produced only if sufficient blood remains in the crop from the previous larval meal. The data concerning crops size are consistent with the hypothesis that the activity of the corpus allatum is governed by the degree of distension of the crop or abdomen.  相似文献

The effect of mating on egg development and the size of the female accessory glands during the gonotrophic cycle of Anopheles gambiae was investigated. Although females that received a measured meal of blood were more likely to produce an egg batch when they were mated, the increased reproduction was not the result of male accessory gland substances. Changes in the size of the female accessory gland were not observed after mating nor at any time during the gonotrophic cycle, but there was a more rapid increase in its size following emergence in mated females.  相似文献

Recent evidence suggests that the nutritional state of male Mediterranean fruit flies, Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) (medfly), is an important influence on various components of their reproductive biology, including mating success. The objective of the present study was to examine experimentally the effect of temporary starvation on the mating success of wild male C. capitata. Males were maintained on protein–sugar or sugar-only diets, and for each diet we compared the mating success of continuously fed males versus males starved for 18 or 24 h immediately before testing. In trials conducted on field-caged, host trees, males starved for 24 h obtained only about half as many matings as fed males for both diets. However, when the starvation period was 18 h, starved males reared on the protein–sugar diet mated significantly less frequently than fed males, whereas starved males reared on sugar mated as often as fed males. Measurements of male pheromone calling and female attraction revealed that reduced mating success likely reflected the decreased signaling activity of starved males.

The effect of ovariectomy on feeding, mating, Juvenile Hormone (JH) production, and maternal behaviour was assessed in female ring-legged earwigs, Euborellia annulipes (Lucas) (Dermaptera: Carcinophoridae), during the first 16 days of adult life (the first gonadotrophic cycle and early brooding). Ovariectomy of 2-day-old adults did not affect weight gain, nor did it alter mating behaviour on day 7. Similarly, ovariectomy did not prevent the increase in JH biosynthesis that accompanies vitellogenesis in this species, which suggests a cycle of JH production that is not dependent on the presence of the ovaries. Both ovariectomy and mating status affected feeding behaviour. Most introduced eggs were consumed (i.e. disappeared) within 24 h, and younger (7-day-old) females consumed more eggs than did older ones. However, 12-day-old intact virgins and 16-day-old ovariectomized, mated females consumed fewest eggs, and allowed some hatching. Thus, ovariectomy did not abolish changes in feeding behaviour that normally accompany reproduction but, instead, appeared to delay the reduction in feeding that normally accompanies the completion of the cycle of egg development. By contrast, mating enhanced the reduction in feeding late in the reproductive cycle. Mating significantly enhanced maternal behaviour in both ovariectomized and sham-operated females. Hatching success from egg clutches introduced to day 16 virgin or mated females that had been ovariectomized or sham-operated on day 2, was significantly greater in the mated groups.  相似文献

A sharp cooling of the sevryuga females as well as their reservation at the spawning temperatures suppress the ability of oocytes coated by follicle membranes to mature under the effect of hypophyseal gonadotrophic hormones in vitro and in vivo. At the same time the oocytes from these females in both the types of experiments are able to mature in vitro in the Ringer solution with progesterone. The injection of triiodthyronine to cooled or reserved females restores the ability of their oocytes to mature under the effect of hypophyseal gonadotrophic hormones both in vivo and in vitro. Such oocytes in our experiments undergo normal development upon fertilization. The thyroid gland hormone (triiodthyronine) influences thus, the ability of follicle epithelium to respond to the effect of hypophyseal gonadotrophic hormones by stimulation of oocyte maturation; this influence of triiodthyronine appears to be indirect. Some practical aspects of this problem are discussed.  相似文献

Juvenile hormone III biosynthesis by corpora allata of adult female Leucophaea maderae was measured by an in vitro radiochemical assay. In fed females, JH III synthesis increases more than 20-fold after mating to a peak of 55 pmol/pair/h on day 9 and then rapidly declines. This increase in JH III synthesis concomitant with rapid oocyte growth in mated females is not observed in virgin females. The corpora allata from starved, virgin females appear to be inactive. The addition of 150 microM 2E,6E-farnesol (a) JH III precursor) to the incubation medium stimulates the corpora allata from starved, virgin females less than the corpora allata from starved, mated females. Both feeding and mating are necessary for the expression of a normal cycle of JH III synthesis in this cockroach.  相似文献

In the spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana, and the obliquebanded leafroller, C. rosaceana, mating significantly depressed pheromone production after 24 h. On subsequent days, the pheromone titre increased slightly in C. fumiferana, but not in C. rosaceana. No pheromonostatic activity was associated with male accessory sex gland (ASG) extracts, 20-hydroxy-ecdysone or hemolymph taken from mated females. However, pheromone production in mated females was not suppressed when the ventral nerve cord (VNC) was transected prior to mating, indicating that an intact VNC is required to permanently switch off pheromone production after mating. As suggested for other moth species, the presence of sperm in the spermatheca probably triggers the release of a signal, via the VNC, to inhibit pheromone production. The fact that in both species the brain-suboesophageal ganglion (Br-SEG) of mated females contains pheromonotropic activity and that their pheromone glands may be stimulated by the synthetic pheromone-biosynthesis-activating-neuropeptide (PBAN) or a brain extract supports the hypothesis that the neural signal prevents the release of PBAN into the hemolymph rather than inhibiting its biosynthesis. Therefore, we speculate that following the depletion of sperm in the spermatheca, the neural signal declines and is less effective in preventing the release of PBAN, thereby stimulating the resumption of pheromone production, as seen in mated C. fumiferana females. In a previous study, mating was shown to induce a significant rise in the juvenile hormone (JH) titre of both Choristoneura female moths, suggesting that post-mating pheromone inhibition may be under hormonal regulation. However, following topical applications or injections of the juvenile hormone analogue (JHA) and JH II into virgins, the pheromone only declined significantly 48 h after treatment in C. rosaceana. This suggests that the significant rise in the hemolymph JH titre after mating in C. rosaceana females plays a role in keeping the pheromone titre consistently low throughout their reproductive life. These findings will be discussed in relation to the different life histories of the two Choristoneura species.  相似文献

The role of juvenile hormone (JH) in courtship, mating, maternal behavior, and the ovarian cycle was studied in the ring-legged earwig, Euborellia annulipes (Lucas). The single, median corpus allatum makes and secretes JH III. JH III production was low in newly eclosed adult females, increasing as oocytes developed, maximal at about the time of oviposition, and low again in brooding females. Application of 35 or 122 μg JH III to newly eclosed females hastened the onset of courtship behavior, but had no effect on the age at which females first mated nor on the duration of mating, though the trend is toward advanced onset. Hormone treatment advanced the age of first oviposition and reduced clutch size and the proportion of eggs hatching but did not affect the interval from oviposition of the first clutch to oviposition of the second clutch, nor the size and proportion hatching of the second clutch. Acetone treatment and treatment with 6 μg JH III did not affect these parameters. Application of 50 μg JH III to females on the day of oviposition shortened the duration of maternal care and advanced the onset of the second gonadotropic cycle, compared with that of acetone-treated and precocene II-treated females. The duration of maternal care was positively correlated with the proportion of eggs hatching. JH titer analysis confirmed JH III to be the predominant hormone in this species and clearly demonstrated the absence of other homologues. This work also confirmed our hypothesis that intermediate to high levels of JH are associated with oocyte growth, mating, and cessation of maternal care; low levels of JH are associated with the period of maternal behavior and slow ovarian development. We are currently investigating factors which might regulate corpus allatum activity during the reproductive cycle and the subsequent period of maternal care. Arch. Insect Biochem. Methyl eugenol (ME) and inclusion of protein into the adult diet increase the mating competitiveness of the Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel). Exposing males to ME or protein is a promising post‐teneral treatment for males being released in the sterile insect technique (SIT). However, the effect of this post‐teneral treatment on male reproductive organs or the male ejaculate is unknown. During mating, males transfer sperm and accessory gland products (AGPs) to females and these compounds are reported to modulate female sexual inhibition. We studied the impact of male exposure to ME and a yeast hydrolysate (YH) diet on the protein reserves of males, male reproductive organ size, and the male ejaculate through sperm and AGPs. We show that males exposed to ME regardless of access to YH accumulated a greater amount of whole body protein. Males fed on YH also had increased total body protein and had bigger reproductive organs than YH‐deprived males, but no apparent effect of ME exposure was observed on reproductive organ size. Females stored less sperm when mated with males fed on YH and ME compared to males not fed on ME. YH and ME had no effect on male AGPs. Females injected with AGPs of males fed on YH and exposed to ME were just as likely to mate as females injected with AGPs of non‐treated males. However, females injected with AGPs of males exposed to ME mated faster than females injected with AGPs of non‐exposed males. We conclude that while exposure to ME increases male copulatory success and protein reserves in the male body, there seem to be some potential trade‐offs such as lower sperm stored by females. We discuss our results in terms of pre‐release protocols that may be used for B. dorsalis in SIT application.  相似文献

Mating stimulates complex physiological changes in females of Drosophila melanogaster. Long-term effects of mating are manifested in increased fecundity and shortened lifespan. It is not clear how mating affects stress resistance in fly females. We addressed this question here and found that mated and highly fecund wild-type D. melanogaster females have significantly higher resistance to starvation throughout their lifetime than age-matched virgin females. Mean survival time under starvation was age dependent with maximum survival time observed in 15-day-old mated females. Mating-induced increase in starvation resistance was associated with significantly higher fat reserves stored as triacylglycerols. While mated females had higher resistance to starvation, their resistance to oxidative stress was significantly lower than in age-matched virgins. Our study revealed that mating leads to an opposing relationship between resistance to starvation and resistance to oxidative stress in Drosophila females. Thus, shortened lifespan of mated females is associated with their high-fat content and greater susceptibility to oxidative stress.  相似文献
