Brief irradiation of 3-d-old maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings with red light (R; 180 J m-2) inhibits elongation of the mesocotyl (70–80% inhibition in 8 h) and reduces its indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content. The reduction in IAA content, apparent within a few hours, is the result of a reduction in the supply of IAA from the coleoptile unit (which includes the shoot apex and primary leaves). The fluence-response relationship for the inhibition of mesocotyl growth by R and far-red light closely resemble those for the reduction of the IAA supply from the coleoptile. The relationship between the concentration of IAA (1–10 M) supplied to the cut surface of the mesocotyl of seedlings with their coleoptile removed and the growth increment of the mesocotyl, measured after 4 h, is linear. The hypothesis that R inhibits mesocotyl growth mainly by reducing the IAA supply from the coleoptile is supported. However, mesocotyl growth in seedlings from which the coleoptiles have been removed is also inhibited by R (about 25% inhibition in 8 h). This inhibition is not related to changes in the IAA level, and not relieved by applied IAA. In intact seedlings, this effect may also participate in the inhibition of mesocotyl growth by R. Inhibition of cell division by R, whose mechanism is not known, will also result in reduced mesocotyl elongation especially in the long term (e.g. 24 h).Abbreviations FR far-red light - IAA indole-3-acetic acid - Pfr phytochrome in the far-red-absorbing form - Pr phytochrome in the red-absorbing form - R red light  相似文献

The effects of root-zone salinity (0, 30, and 60 mmol L–1 of NaCl) and root-zone temperature (10, 15, 20, and 25°C) and their interactions on the number of tillers, total dry matter production, and the concentration of nutrients in the roots and tops of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were studied. Experiments were conducted in growth chambers (day/night photoperiod of 16/8 h and constant air temperature of 20°C) and under water-culture conditions. Salinity and root temperature affected all the parameters tested. Interactions between salinity and temperature were significant (p<0.05) for the number of tillers, growth of tops and roots, and the concentration of Na, K, P in the tops and the concentration of P in the roots. Maximum number of tillers and the highest dry matter were produced when the root temperature was at the intermediate levels of 15 to 20°C. Effect of salinity on most parameters tested strongly depended on the prevailing root temperature. For example, at root temperature of 10°C addition of 30 mmol L–1 NaCl to the nutrient solution stimulated the growth of barley roots; at root temperature of 25°C, however, the same NaCl concentration inhibited the root growth. At 60 mmol L–1, root and shoot growth were maximum when root temperature was kept at the intermediate level of 15°C; most inhibition of salinity occurred at both low (10°C) and high (25°C) root temperatures. As the root temperature was raised from 10 to 25°C, the concentration of Na generally decreased in the tops and increased in the roots. At a given Na concentration in the tops or in the roots, respective growth of tops or roots was much less inhibited if the roots were grown at 15–20°C. It is concluded that the tolerance of barley plant to NaCl salinity of the rooting media appears to be altered by the root temperature and is highest if the root temperature is kept at 15 to 20°C.  相似文献

The distribution of sodium and potassium throughout corn (Zea mays L. [A632 × Crows 3640] × Oh 43) plants is not simply a matter of uptake by cortical cells and irreversible delivery to the xylem for upward transport. We show that sodium, but not potassium, accumulates in the mesocotyl of corn seedlings grown on NaCl medium. Upon transfer to NaCl-free medium, total sodium is reduced by export through the roots but remains at high levels within the mesocotyl. We report experiments which consider uptake from the xylem.

Shoots excised at the seed were allowed to transpire solutions containing 22Na and 42K. Potassium uptake within the mesocotyl was very sensitive to concentration, increasing 27-fold between 1 and 10 millimolar. Sodium uptake was dependent upon the square root of the concentration suggesting active accumulation. At sodium concentrations below 1 millimolar, more than 80% of the sodium in the plant was retained in the mesocotyl. Both the uptake by and retention within the mesocotyl were dependent upon transpiration rate as well as concentration. We discuss the limitations of measuring uptake from a finite, depletable medium. The mesocotyl is a modified root with a cuticularized epidermis. We discuss the feasibility of using this `plastic-coated root' as a model for root transport studies.

The effects of different concentrations of lead nitrate (10–5 to 10–3 M) on root, hypocotyl, and shoot growth of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. var. megarrhiza), and the uptake and accumulation of Pb2+ by its roots, hypocotyls, and shoots were investigated. Lead had no significant inhibitory effect on the root growth at concentrations of 10–5 to 10–4 M during the entire treatment, while at 10–3 M, Pb slightly inhibited the root and shoot growth. B. juncea has ability to take up Pb from solutions and accumulate it in its roots, and transport and concentrate it. The Pb contents in the parts of plants treated with 10–3 M Pb were greater than those of untreated plants, by factors of 230 in the roots, 170 in the hypocotyls, and 3 in the shoots.  相似文献

Summary In a split root experiment translocation of N from shoot to root was studied using15NO 3 . The three plant species selected for this experiment differed significantly with respect to root NRA. For lupin, maize and cocklebur about 80, 50 and 6% of all absorbed NO 3 was assmilated in the roots, respectively.Although NO 3 was reduced in the roots of lupin and maize plants to a greater extent than required for the roots' demand for organic N, a significant phloem flow of N from shoot to roots was found in these plants. Unexpectedly, for cocklebur, the plant with the very low root NRA, the fraction of total N present in the root that has been imported from the shoot was only half that as found for lupin and maize.  相似文献

Mapping quantitative trait loci for seedling vigor in rice using RFLPs   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Improving seedling vigor is an important objective of modern rice (Oryza saliva L.) breeding programs. The purpose of this study was to identify and map quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying seedling vigor-related traits using restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs). An F2 population of 204 plants was developed from a cross between a low-vigor japonica cultivar Labelle (LBL) and a high-vigor indica cultivar Black Gora (BG). A linkage map was constructed of 117 markers spanning 1496 Haldane cM and encompassing the 12 rice chromosomes with an average marker spacing of 14 cM. The length of the shoots, roots, coleoptile and mesocotyl were measured on F3 families in slantboard tests conducted at two temperatures (18° and 25°C). By means of interval analysis, 13 QTLs, each accounting for 7% to 38% of the phenotypic variance, were identified and mapped in the two temperature regimes at a log-likelihood (LOD) threshold of 2.5. Four QTLs controlled shoot length, 2 each controlled root and coleoptile lengths and 5 influenced mesocotyl length. Single-point analysis confirmed the presence of these QTLs and detected additional loci for shoot, root and coleoptile lengths, these latter usually accounting for less than 5% of the phenotypic variation. Only 3 QTLs detected both by interval and singlepoint analyses were expressed under both temperature regimes. Additive, dominant and overdominant modes of gene action were observed. Contrary to what was predicted from parental phenotype, the low-vigor LBL contributed 46% of the positive alleles for shoot, root and coleoptile lengths. Positive alleles from the high-vigor parent BG were identified for increased root, coleoptile and mesocotyl lengths. However, BG contributed alleles with only minor effects for shoot length, the most important determinant of seedling vigor in water-seeded rice, suggesting that it would not be an ideal donor parent for introducing faster shoot growth alleles into temperate japonica cultivars.  相似文献

Inter-specific relationships between mean seed weight, coleoptile + mesocotyl (sub-coleoptile internode) length and width, shoot strength and emergence from different sowing depths were examined for timothy (Phleum pratense L., mean seed weight 0.33-0.48 mg depending on seed line), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L., 0.65-0.78 mg), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L., 1.71-2.19 mg), tall fescue (Festuca arundinucea Schreb., 1.73–2.60 mg), annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam., 5.10-5.20 mg) and prairie grass (Bromus willdenowü Kunth., 10.5–12.2 mg). Across species at 10,30 and 60 mm sowing depths in the field and 10, 15 and 30 mm sowing depths under controlled environment conditions, there was a significant (P < 0.05) positive correlation between emergence % and mean seed weight. Across species at 10–30 mm sowing depth under controlled environment conditions, emergence % was not significantly correlated with coleoptile + mesocotyl length but there were significant positive correlations between emergence % and coleoptile and mesocotyl width: shoot strength increased with increased coleoptile width across species. For seed lines of timothy of different mean seed weight (0.21-0.81 mg), emergence %, coleoptile + mesocotyl length and coleoptile and mesocotyl width increased with increased seed weight at 10 and 15 mm sowing depth. Shoot strength increased with increased coleoptile width for timothy. For emerged and non-emerged cocksfoot and timothy seedlings regardless of seed weight, mean coleoptile + mesocotyl length was > 10 mm at 10 mm sowing depth. It is concluded that at 10–30 mm sowing depth, increased emergence % with increased seed weight across species is not due to increased coleoptile + mesocotyl length. It is proposed that increased emergence % with increased seed weight across species at 10–30 mm sowing depths and across seed lines of timothy at 10 mm sowing depth is primarily due to increased coleoptile and mesocotyl width resulting in increased shoot strength and hence an increased ability to penetrate the substrate.  相似文献

Glasshouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of L-TRP in comparison with indole-3-acetamide (IAM), tryptophol (TOL) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on the growth of Zea mays L. var. Early Sunglow. L-TRP (25 to 2.5×10–5 mg kg–1 soil), IAM (22 to 2.2×10–5 mg kg–1 soil), TOL (20 to 2.0×10–5 mg kg–1 soil), and IAA (22 to 2.2×10–5 mg kg–1 soil) were applied as a soil drench to established uniform seedlings. All treatments were applied in a completely randomized design with 10 replicates. IAM had no significant effect on the plant growth parameters. Shoot height, uppermost leaf collar base distance, internodal distance, and shoot dry and fresh weights were significantly improved upon the addition of TOL (2.0×10–2 mg kg–1 soil), however, the highest concentration (20 mg kg–1 soil) caused a 14.6% reduction in leaf width. L-TRP (2.5×10–3 mg kg-1 soil) also had a significant influence on shoot height, uppermost leaf collar base distance, internodal distance and fresh weight of shoot compared with the control. The highest concentration of L-TRP (25=mg kg–1 soil) had a negative effect on leaf width and dry weight of the shoot. The most pronounced response on the corn growth parameters was observed with the application of IAA at lower concentrations (2.2×10–5 to 2.2×10–2 mg kg–1 soil) specifically improving root growth. The highest concentration (22 mg kg–1 soil) of IAA had a significant negative effect on plant height, leaf width, stem diameter, shoot fresh and dry weight. These findings indicate that L-TRP applied at the appropriate concentrations can have positive effects on corn growth comparable to pure auxins (TOL and IAA).  相似文献

Mature maize (Zea mays) embryos were exposed to 5, 10 and 25 µg ml–1 of deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEA), ochratoxin A (OA) and a mixture of zearalenone and deoxynivalenol (ZEA/DON) for 9 days. DON and the ZEA/DON combination were consistently more inhibitory of the measured parameters than either ZEA or OA. Based on the predicted additive values, it would appear that, in combination, ZEA and DON act synergistically to inhibit root and shoot growth. For ZEA alone, a concentration of 5 µg ml–1 ZEA was generally inhibitory of root and shoot elongation and fresh mass accumulation, while at 10 and 25 µg ml–1, this toxin had a stimulatory effect on these parameters. For OA, the measured effects on root and shoot growth at 5 and 25 µg ml–1 were stimulatory, while at 10 µg ml–1 OA, an inhibitory effect was observed. For all toxins, inhibitory/stimulatory effects were generally more marked for root parameters than for shoot elongation or mass.Abbreviations ADON acetyldeoxynivalenol - AFB1 aflatoxin B1 - DAS diacetyoxyscirpenol - DON deoxynivalenol - FB1 fumonisin B1 - FHB Fusaium head blight - MON moniliformin - NIV nivalenol - OA ochratoxin A - ZEA zearalenone  相似文献

We investigated the responses of seven woody Hakea (Proteaceae) species (two populations of each), to two months of waterlogging and subsequent drainage, in a controlled glasshouse experiment. The species originated from contrasting environments (winter-wetland versus non-wetland habitats), and differed in abundance (endangered ironstone species versus common species). Waterlogging arrested growth of the main root system, and stimulated the formation of superficial adventitious roots just below the root/shoot junction in all species. Wetland species produced at least twice the amount of adventitious root dry mass of that of non-wetland species, due to differences in number, length or degree of branching. Their adventitious roots also tended to have higher porosities (7–10% versus 5–6% gas spaces). The relative amount of adventitious roots formed was strongly, positively correlated with the maintenance of shoot growth, and only the non-wetland species showed significant shoot growth reductions (19%) upon waterlogging. Dry mass percentage of stems and leaves, and leaf dry mass per area (LMA) increased considerably during waterlogging in all species (averages of 15, 29 and 27%, respectively), returning to the values of continuously drained control plants after drainage. Similarly, upon drainage, a suppression of shoot growth (average 35%) and a stimulation of root growth (average 50%) restored the root mass ratios to those of control plants. We found a negative correlation between the maintenance of growth during waterlogging versus that after waterlogging, suggesting a trade-off in functioning of the superficial adventitious roots between waterlogged and drained conditions. The rare winter-wet ironstone endemics resembled the common winter-wet species in most of their responses to waterlogging and drainage. Therefore, the results presented here cannot offer an explanation for their different distribution patterns. Our results suggest that non-wetland species may be disadvantaged in a wetland environment, due to their lower capacity to form adventitious roots resulting in stronger growth reductions.  相似文献

Summary In seedlings of maize (Zea mays L. cv. Percival), growth is controlled by the plant photoreceptor phytochrome. Whereas coleoptile growth is promoted by continuous far-red light, a dramatic block of mesocotyl elongation is observed. The response of the coleoptile is based entirely upon light-induced stimulation of cell elongation, whereas the response of the mesocotyl involves light-induced inhibition of cell elongation. The light response of actin microfilaments was followed over time in the epidermis by staining with fluorescence-labelled phalloidin. In contrast to the underlying tissue, epidermal cells are characterized by dense longitudinal bundles of microfilaments. These bundles become loosened during phases of rapid elongation (between 2–3 days in irradiated coleoptiles, between 5–6 days in dark-grown coleoptiles). The condensed bundles re-form when growth gradually ceases. The response of actin to light is fast. If etiolated mesocotyls are transferred to far-red light, condensation of microfilaments can be clearly seen 1 h after the onset of stimulation together with an almost complete block of mesocotyl elongation. The observations are discussed in relation to a possible role of actin microfilaments in the signal-dependent control of cell elongation.  相似文献

Development and function ofAzospirillum-inoculated roots   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Summary The surface distribution ofAzospirillum on inoculated roots of maize and wheat is generally similar to that of other members of the rhizoplane microflora. During the first three days, colonization takes place mainly on the root elongation zone, on the base of root hairs and, to a lesser extent, on the surface of young root hairs.Azospirillum has been found in cortical tissues, in regions of lateral root emergence, along the inner cortex, inside xylem vessels and between pith cells. Inoculation of several cultivars of wheat, corn, sorghum and setaria with several strains ofAzospirillum caused morphological changes in root starting immediately after germination. Root length and surface area were differentially affected according to bacterial age and inoculum level. During the first three weeks after germination, the number of root hairs, root hair branches and lateral roots was increased by inoculation, but there was no change in root weight. Root biomass increased at later stages. Cross-sections of inoculated corn and wheat root showed an irregular arrangement of cells in the outer layers of the cortex. These effects on plant morphology may be due to the production of plant growth-promoting substances by the colonizing bacteria or by the plant as a reaction to colonization. Pectic enzymes may also be involved. Morphological changes had a physiological effect on inoculated roots. Specific activities of oxidative enzymes, and lipid and suberin content, were lower in extracts of inoculated roots than in uninoculated controls. This suggests that inoculated roots have a larger proportion of younger roots. The rate of NO 3, K+ and H2PO 4 uptake was greater in inoculated seedlinds. In the field, dry matter, N, P and K accumulated at faster rates, and water content was higher inAzospirillum-inoculated corn, sorghum, wheat and setaria. The above improvements in root development and function lead in many cases to higher crop yield.  相似文献

The effects of hydrogel on growth and ion relationships of a salt resistant woody species, Populus euphratica , were investigated under saline conditions. The hydrogel used was Stockosorb K410, a highly cross-linked polyacrylamide with about 40% of the amide group hydrolysed to carboxylic groups. Amendment of saline soil (potassium mine refuse) with 0.6% hydrogel improved seedling growth (2.7-fold higher biomass) over a period of 2 years, even though plant growth was reduced by salinity. Hydrogel-treated plants had approximately 3.5-fold higher root length and root surface area than those grown in unamended saline soil. In addition, over 6% of total roots were aggregated in gel fragments. Tissue and cellular ion analysis showed that growth improvement appeared to be the result of increased capacity for salt exclusion and enhancement of Ca2+ uptake. X-ray microanalysis of root compartments indicated that the presence of polymer restricted apoplastic Na+ in both young and old roots, and limited apoplastic and cytoplastic Cl in old roots while increasing Cl compartmentation in cortical vacuoles of both young and old roots. Collectively, radical transport of salt ions (Na+ and Cl) through the cortex into the xylem was lowered and subsequent axial transport was limited. Hydrogel treatment enhanced uptake of Ca2+ and microanalysis showed that enrichment of Ca2+ in root tissue mainly occurred in the apoplast. In conclusion, enhanced Ca2+ uptake and the increased capacity of P. euphratica to exclude salt were the result of improved Ca2+/Na+ concentration of soil solution available to the plant. Hydrogel amendment improves the quality of soil solutions by lowering salt level as a result of its salt-buffering capacity and enriching Ca2+ uptake, because of the polymers cation-exchange character. Accordingly, root aggregation allows good contact of roots with a Ca2+ source and reduces contact with Na+ and Cl, which presumably plays a major role in enhancing salt tolerance of P. euphratica.  相似文献

The effect of mutual shading on the root/shoot ratio and on the number of nodal roots of maize was studied. Plants of two varieties (Dea and LG2281) were grown in individual pots of 9 L, at three plant densities: 7.5, 11 and 15 plants m–2. A control experiment was carried out in order to study if root growth was affected by the small size of the pots. Maize plants (cv Dea) were grown at a low plant density (7.5 plants m–2) in pots of two different volumes (9 and 25 L respectively). In both experiments plants were watered every two hours with a nutrient solution. Some plants were sampled at five dates in the main experiment and the following data were recorded: foliar stage; root, stem and leaf dry weight; number of root primordia and number of emerged roots per phytomer. The final sampling date occurred at silking. Results of the control experiment showed that the root biomass was lower in small pots but the number of nodal roots per phytomer was not affected. Results of the main experiment showed that the total plant biomass and the root/shoot ratio were lower at high plant density. The number of emerged roots was strongly reduced on the upper phytomer (P8). This reduction was mainly due to a lower percentage of root primordia which elongated. A proposed interpretation is that the number of roots which emerge on upper phytomers is controlled by carbohydrate availability.  相似文献

Summary A study was made of the effects of the herbicides 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) and MCPA (4-chloro-2-methyl-phenoxyacetic acid) on ion uptake, leakage and growth of rice seedlings. Using isotopically-labelled solutions containing different concentrations of 2,4-D or MCPA, it was established that 10–4 M 2,4-D or MCPA effectively inhibited potassium ion uptake, while K-ion leakage from the roots occurred only at 10–3 M. The growth of the rice seedlings was markedly retarded even at low (10–6 M) concentrations, and the roots and shoots showed different tolerances to the herbicide. At 10–8 M herbicide, the effects were not injurious, but rather favourable. Reduction in root length by herbicides was not in accordance with dry-matter production.  相似文献

The effect of different external cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) regimes on the concentration of Cd and Cu in roots and shoots of birch (Betula pendula Roth.) seedlings was investigated. The seedlings were grown for 12 days in a weak nutrient solution (containing all essential nutrient elements including 0.025 µM Cu) at pH 4.2 with combinations of additional 0–2 µM CdCl2 and 0–2 µM CuCl2. Root and shoot concentrations of Cu were decreased by Cd in all treatments which included 0.1–2 µM of additional Cu in the treatment solution. When no extra Cu was added, only the shoot concentration of Cu was decreased by Cd whereas the root concentration was not affected. The shoot concentration of Cd was decreased by 0.5 and 2 µM of additional Cu in the treatment solution. The root concentration of Cd was decreased by Cu only when the concentration of additional Cu in the treatment solution was equal to or exceeded the concentration of Cd.  相似文献

The apical 2 cm of seedling roots of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L., cv. Primor) produced more ethylene than adjacent, older tissue. Treatment with 5 × 10–3 mol m–3 3,5-diiodo4-hydroxybenzoic acid (DIHB), a presumed inhibitor of ethylene action, failed to stimulate root extension. Larger concentrations were inhibitory. Ethylene, applied as ethephon decreased root extension but DIHB (5 × 10–3 mol m–3) partially overcame this effect. Oxygen concentrations below that present in air also inhibited root extension but this was not ameliorated by DIHB.Roots of barley seedlings (Hordeum vulgare L., cv. Midas) evolved ethylene more slowly than roots of oilseed rape. DIHB (10–3–10–2 mol m–3) stimulated root extension in the absence of ethephon. Ethephon alone retarded root extension but DIHB partially overcame this inhibition. Small concentrations of oxygen also inhibited root extension but DIHB failed to ameliorate the effect even though the slow growth of oxygen-deficient roots (3–5% oxygen) was associated with abnormally fast rates of endogenous ethylene production.Extension growth in different oxygen concentrations was more closely associated with rates of oxygen consumption than with the amount of ethylene produced. Thus respiration rather than ethylene appeared to limit root extension under oxygen deficiency. This may explain why DIHB was unable to offset this form of environmental stress.  相似文献

Using a 14C pulse-labelling technique, we studied the seasonal changes in assimilation and partitioning of photoassimilated C in the plant–root–soil components of a temperate pasture. Pasture and soil samples were taken after 4-h, and 35-day chase periods, to examine these seasonal 14C fluxes. Total C and 14C were determined in the shoot, root and soil system. The amounts of C translocated annually to roots and soil were also estimated from the seasonal 14C distribution and pasture growth. The in situ field decomposition of newly formed roots during different seasons, also using 14C-labelling, was studied for one year in undisturbed rhizosphere soil. The 14C-labelled roots were sampled five times and decomposition rates were calculated assuming first-order decomposition.Annual pasture production at the site was 16 020 kg DM ha–1, and pasture growth varied with season being highest (75–79 kg ha–1 d–1) in spring and lowest (18–20 kg ha–1 d–1) in winter. The above- and below-ground partitioning of 14C also varied with the season. The respiratory 14C–CO2 losses, calculated as the difference between the total amounts of 14C recovered in the soil-plant system at 4 h and 35 days, were high (66–70%) during the summer, autumn and winter season, and low (37–39%) during the spring and late-spring season. Pasture plants partitioned more C below-ground during spring compared with summer, autumn and winter seasons. Overall, at this high fertility dairy pasture site, 18 220 kg C/ha was respired, 6490 kg remained above-ground in the shoot, and 6820 kg was translocated to roots and 1320 kg to soil. Root decomposition rate constant (k) differed widely with the season and were the highest for the autumn roots. The half-life was highest (111 days) for autumn roots and lowest (64 days) for spring roots. About one-third of the root label measured in the spring season disappeared in the first 5 weeks after the initial 35 Day of allocation period. The late spring, summer, late summer and winter roots had intermediate half-lives (88–94 days). These results indicate that seasonal changes in root growth and decomposition should be accounted for to give a better quantification of root turnover.  相似文献

Pot experiments were conducted to investigate interspecific complementation in utilization of phytate and FePO4 by plants in the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)/chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) intercropping under sterile and non-sterile conditions. The pots were separated into two compartments by either a solid root barrier to eliminate root contact and solute movement, by a nylon mesh (30 M) to prevent root contact but permit solute exchange, or not separated between the compartments. Wheat plants were grown in one compartment and chickpea in the other. Two P sources were tested at 60 mg P kg–1 soil (sodium phytate or FePO4). Under non-sterile conditions, the biomass of wheat was significantly greater when the roots were intermingled with chickpea than when the roots were separated from chickpea roots by a solid root barrier or nylon mesh. When phytate–P was applied, P concentrations in wheat (2.9 g kg–1 in shoots and 1.4 g kg–1 in roots) without root barrier between the two species were higher than those in the treatments with nylon mesh or with the solid root barrier separation (1.9 g kg–1 in shoots and 1.0 g kg–1 in roots). In contrast, P concentrations in wheat supplied with FePO4 were similar between the root separation treatments. There was no significant difference in P uptake by chickpea between the P sources or between the root separation treatments, except that P uptake was greater in the phytate treatment with the root barrier. Total P uptake from phytate was increased by 25% without root separation compared to the root separation treatments. Under sterile conditions and supply of phytate–P, the biomass of wheat was doubled when the roots were intermingled with chickpea and increased by a third with the nylon mesh separation compared to that with the solid root barrier. Biomass production in wheat at various treatments correlated with P concentration in shoot. Biomass production and P concentration in chickpea were unaffected by root separation. Total P uptake by plants was 68% greater with root intermingling and 37% greater with nylon mesh separation than that with the solid root barrier. The results suggest that chickpea roots facilitate P utilization from the organic P by wheat.  相似文献

The relative importance of endogenous abscisic acid (ABA), as well as Na+ and Cl in NaCl-induced responses related to growth in roots of rice seedlings were investigated. The increase in ammonium, proline and H2O2 levels, and cell wall peroxidase (POD) activity has been shown to be related to NaCl-inhibited root growth of rice seedlings. Increasing concentrations of NaCl from 50 to 150 mM progressively decreased root growth and increased both Na+ and Cl. Treatment with NaCl in the presence of 4,4-diisothiocyano-2,2-disulfonic acid (DIDS, a nonpermeating amino-reactive disulfonic acid known to inhibit the uptake of Cl) had less Cl level in roots than that in the absence of DIDS, but did not affect the levels of Na+, and responses related to growth in roots. Treatment with 50 mM Na-gluconate (the anion of which is not permeable to membrane) had similar Na+ level in roots as that with 100 mM NaCl. It was found that treatment with 50 mM Na-gluconate effected growth reduction and growth-related responses in roots in the same way as 100 mM NaCl. All these results suggest that Cl is not required for NaCl-induced responses in root of rice seedlings. Endogenous ABA level showed no increase in roots of rice seedlings exposed to 150 mM NaCl. It is unlikely that ABA is associated with NaCl-inhibited root growth of rice seedlings.  相似文献
