Frequency distributions of colour blindness, midphalangeal hair, ear lobe attachment, hand clasping, arm folding, leg folding and handedness are reported for different population groups from Himachal Pradesh, North India, namely Pangwalas, Transhumant Gaddis (Brahmans, Rajputs and Scheduled Castes) and Settled Gaddis (Brahmans, Rajputs and Schedules Castes). An attempt has been made to compare the results of the present study within and between these groups as well as with the results of other reports from different population groups of India and Asia.  相似文献

Gaddi boys from the Bharmour sub-tehsil of the Chamba District (Himachal Pradesh, India) aged from 4 to 20 years were studied cross-sectionally during 1974-1975 for skin and sub-cutaneous tissue thickness. The patterns of change of skinfolds at triceps and calf (limb skinfolds) are similar to each other, but different from that of the subscapular and suprailiac (trunk skinfolds), which in turn also follow a similar pattern. The trunk skinfolds decrease from 5 to 7-8 years, sharply in the beginning, but slowly thereafter, and remain almost constant until age 12 and gain in thickness during adolescence. The limb skinfolds decrease in thickness from 5 to 11-12 years, and then they increase slowly. A comparison of skinfolds of the Gaddi boys with other neighbouring as well as distant populations reveals that, by and large, the Gaddi boys possess smaller amounts of sub-cutaneous tissue. Nutritional inadequacies, hard work and adverse environmental factors of moderate altitudes seem to put great stress on the development of sub-cutaneous fat among Gaddi boys. Standards of growth of triceps skinfold for this population are provided.  相似文献

Physical features and somatometric characters of the wide spread Gujjar population in North-Western India are fascinating. It is all the more interesting to study their morphological and regional variations in the body dimensions. In this paper, anthropometric characters of 200 adult subjects each belonging to Hindu Gujjars in the Ropar District of Punjab and Muslim Gujjars in the Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh in the North-Western part of India were compared. They differ significantly from each other for many physiognomic measurements, suggesting the biological diversity between the two population groups. Further, the comparison of anthropometric measurements between the different localities of the Gujjars showed morphological variations and regional diversity of the isolates in North-Western India. These findings may be attributed to the founder effect, genetic drift, and breeding and geographical isolation of the populations under study and not to secular trends. The findings have also been compared and discussed with the available results of other local populations in North-Western India.  相似文献

Lindelofia longiflora (Royle ex Benth.) Baill.var.falconeri (Cl.) Brand (Family:Boraginaceae) is investigated cytologically (n =12) for the first time from the cold deserts of Pangi Valley,Chamba District (Himachal Pradesh) in India. We report the formation of syncytes and 2n pollen grains in the species.During meiosis, the majority of the pollen mother cells (PMCs) exhibited 12 bivalents, equal segregation of chromosomes during anaphases, regular tetrads, and normal-sized pollen grain formation.Occasionally, two proximate PMCs fused during the early stages ofprophase-I and resulted in the formation of syncytes. The frequency of syncytes in the accession is rather low,at 25 out of 1866 (1.33%).Such syncyte PMCs are detectable during meiosis due to their larger size compared to typical PMCs.The syncytes or polyploid cells showed normal 24 bivalents and depicted perfectly regular meiotic course. But the products of such PMCs yield 2n or larger sized pollen grains that are almost double the size of typical normal or n pollen grains. The origin of syncytes as a consequence of the fusion of meiocytes during the early stages of meiosis-I could be attributed to low temperature stress conditions prevailing in the Pangi Valley, where temperature during May and June dip to below freezing, the time the plants enters the reproductive/flowering bud stage. It is possible that such apparently fertile 2n pollen grains originating from syncytes might play a role in the origin of intraspecific polyploids in the species.  相似文献

Iodine deficiency (ID) is an endemic health problem in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh (HP) state. ID leads to mental retardation, deaf mutism, squint, dwarfism, spastic diplegia, neurological defects and congenital anomalies. Iodine nutrition status amongst neonates can be assessed by estimating thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The present study was conducted with an objective to assess the iodine nutrition status amongst Neonates in Kangra district, HP. All of the hospitals in the district which provide obstetric services were enlisted, of which three were selected for this survey. A total of 613 umbilical cord blood samples of neonates were collected on filter paper and analyzed for TSH. WHO (2007) reported that that a <3% frequency of TSH concentrations above 5 mIU/L in samples collected 3–4 days after birth indicates iodine sufficiency in a population. In our study we found that 73.4% of the neonates had TSH levels of more than 5 mlU/l, thus indicating ID in the population studied. Iodine deficiency continues to be a public health problem in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh.  相似文献

The ITS region sequence of a phosphate-solubilizing fungus isolated from the rhizosphere of tea growing in Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh showed 96% identity with Discosia sp. strain HKUCC 6626 ITS 1, 5.8S rRNA gene and ITS 2 complete sequence, and 28S rRNA gene partial sequence. The fungus exhibited the multiple plant growth promoting attributes of solubilization of inorganic phosphate substrates, production of phytase and siderophores, and biosynthesis of indole acetic acid (IAA)-like auxins. The fungal inoculum significantly increased the root length, shoot length and dry matter in the test plants of maize, pea and chickpea over the uninoculated control under the controlled environment. The plant growth promoting attributes have not been previously studied for the fungus. The fungal strain with its multiple plant growth promoting activities appears attractive towards the development of microbial inoculants.  相似文献

Several plants invade the cushions of Laretia acaulis in the high Andean communities of central Chile. Humus develops among the rosettes, and 42 different species settle on the cushions. Most of these species are also found outside the cushions. Semi-woody chamaephytes, hemicryptophytes and cryptophytes have a similar cover on both substrates, while the cover of woody chamaephytes and therophytes is smaller on the cushions. The diversity and cover of invading plants, which vary with altitude, result from interactions among the environmental conditions, cushion morphology and the surrounding vegetation. This study is part of the Chilean contribution to the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, within the framework of the UNEP/UNESCO Andean Project (1105-77-01).Nomenclature is given in the Appendix. We thank M. T. K. Arroyo, C. Marticorena and O. Matthei, and the Herbaria of the Universidad Concepción and the Museo de Historia Natural, for help with identification of species.  相似文献

An organophosphorus pesticide malathion biodegradation was investigated by using the bacteria Ochrobactrum sp. M1D isolated from a soil sample of peach orchards in Palampur, District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh (India). The bacterium was able to utilize malathion as the sole source of carbon and energy. The isolated bacterium was found psychrotolerant and could degrade 100% of 100 mg l−1 malathion in minimal salt medium at 20°C, pH 7·0 within 12 days with no major significant metabolites left at the end of the study. Through GCMS analysis, methyl phosphate, diethyl maleate, and diethyl 2-mercaptosuccinate were detected and identified as the major pathway metabolites. Based on the GCMS profile, three probable degradation pathways were interpreted. The present study is the first report of malathion biodegradation at both the psychrophilic and mesophilic conditions by any psychrotolerant strain and also through multiple degradation pathways. In the future, the strain can be explored to bio-remediate the malathion contaminated soil in the cold climatic region and to utilize the enzymatic systems for advanced biotechnology applications.  相似文献

Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA from 16 populations of Persicaria barbata (L.) H. Hara (Polygonaceae) belonging to five geographical locations of India (Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka and Andaman Island) was sequenced. Analysis of nucleotide sequences reveals polymorphism among the populations. UPGMA analysis conducted on the ITS datasets shows that the sampled populations of P. barbata are grouped according to their geographic locations and are supposed to be evolved under reproductive isolation which most probably are due to the long distance distribution and population fragmentation.  相似文献

The diversity elucidation by amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis and 16S rDNA sequencing of 96 associative diazotrophs, isolated from the feeder roots of tea on enriched nitrogen-free semisolid media, revealed the predominance of Gram-positive over Gram-negative bacteria within the Kangra valley in Himachal Pradesh, India. The Gram-positive bacteria observed belong to two taxonomic groupings; Firmicutes, including the genera Bacillus and Paenibacillus; and Actinobacteria, represented by the genus Microbacterium. The Gram-negative bacteria included alpha-Proteobacteria genera Brevundimonas, Rhizobium, and Mesorhizobium; gamma-Proteobacteria genera Pseudomonas and Stenotrophomonas; and beta-Proteobacteria genera Azospira, Burkholderia, Delftia, Herbaspirillum and Ralstonia. The low level of similarity of two isolates, with the type strains Paenibacillus xinjiangensis and Mesorhizobium albiziae, suggests the possibility of raising species novum. The bacterial strains of different phylogenetic groups exhibited distinct carbon-source utilization patterns and fatty acid methyl ester profiles. The strains differed in their nitrogenase activities with relatively high activity seen in the Gramnegative strains exhibiting the highest similarity to Azospira oryzae, Delftia lacustris and Herbaspirillum huttiense.  相似文献

Thalictrum foetidum L. (Ranunculaceae), a morphologically variable and widely distributed species of temperate and alpine Himalayas is worked out cytologically for the first time from India. Earlier studies from outside India were restricted to chromosome counts and karyotypic analysis. We studied the male meiosis, microsporogenesis and pollen viability in the wild accessions from the cold deserts of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and Pangi Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Present cytomorphological surveys in the species record the existence of two distinct morphotypes involving plant size; colour and size of leaf/leaflet; dentation of leaflet lobes; and degree of leaf pubescence. All the accessions in the two morphovariants share the same meiotic chromosome number (n = 21) and adds a new intraspecific hexaploid cytotype. The accessions show the phenomenon of cytomixis involving transfer of chromatin material among proximate pollen mother cells (PMCs) and associated meiotic abnormalities like, out of plate bivalents, interchromosomal connections, and laggards, bridges and micronuclei at anaphases/telophases. Microsporogenesis results into abnormal sporads (tetrads with micronuclei, dyads, triads and polyads). The products of such sporads resulted into some pollen sterility and pollen grains of heterogeneous sizes. The persistent occurrence of phenomenon of cytomixis and associated meiotic abnormalities and consequently pollen sterility and pollen grains of heterogeneous sizes in the hexaploid cytotype of T. foetidum seems to be under some genetic factors associated with the genome.  相似文献

Detailed male meiosis, critical morphological observations and distribution pattern of diploid as well as tetraploid cytotypes of the Western Himalayan species, Bupleurum lanceolatum have been evaluated at present. A diploid (n = 8) cytotype is reported from Kashmir, whereas, both diploid (n = 8) and tetraploid (n = 16) cytotypes are available from two districts Kangra and Sirmaur of Himachal Pradesh. Out of these, the tetraploid cytotype makes new addition for the species on a worldwide basis. As per behavior, a tetraploid cytotype is characterized by abnormal meiosis leading to high pollen sterility and size variation of the pollen grains. Morphologically, tetraploids are noted to be luxuriant in comparison to the diploids.  相似文献

Haptoglobin (HP) is a serum protein that has the capability of binding the extracorpuscular haemoglobin released during haemolysis. It plays an important role in protection of haemolytic disease by reducing the oxidative and peroxidative potential at free haemoglobin. The present study was aimed to determine the prevalence of HP polymorphism among different Indian populations, anthropologically belonging to diverse ethnicity. The polymorphism was screened among 642 unrelated individuals belonging to 14 population groups of India including both tribal and non-tribal caste groups from different geographical regions of India with distinct linguistic affiliations. An attempt is also made to understand the distribution of HP polymorphism among the studied populations. The result reveals the HP gene to be polymorphic in all the studied populations. Except the two tribal populations (Thotis of Andhra Pradesh and Patelias of Rajasthan) and one caste population (Rajput of Himachal Pradesh), all the studied populations are found to obey the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The significance of the present study is elucidated with the prevalence of high mutant HP*2 allele frequency in India. Selection could be one of the most plausible explanations for this high HP frequency because of its uniformly high occurrence among all the studied populations.  相似文献

A morphometric study of the Malaneese - an isolated community living in the midst of Himalayas in district Kullu, Himachal Pradesh - is undertaken with a view to tracing their ethnic relationship with some neighbouring populations viz. Kinnauras, Kulwis and Lahulies, with whom they share some linguistic and cultural experiences. The data consist of 23 anthropometric variables which include 7 linear body measurements, 6 body diameters and circumferences and 10 head and face measurements. The Mahalanobis generalized distance statistics (D2) was used as the primary basis of analysis. The results show that Malaneese are a distinct population clearly distinguishable from the neighbouring populations of Himachal Pradesh. The distance statistics reveal closer morphometric affinity of Malaneese with the Kulwis and Kinnauras than with Lahulies. The lexicostatistical data together with historical records of the movement of people in this region lend support to the above findings.  相似文献

The present paper deals with cytological studies on the population basis of 21 species belonging to 9 genera of tribe Paniceae of family Poaceae from cytologically unexplored area of Western Himalayas i.e. district Kangra of Himachal Pradesh for the assessment of genetic diversity of grass flora. On world-wide basis, the chromosome counts have been made for the first time for three species such as Brachiaria remota (n = 16), Digitaria granularis (n = 36) and Isachne albens (n = 5). Similarly, on India basis, altogether new records are made for two species such as Echinochloa cruspavonis (n = 27) and Paspalum distichum (2n = 50). A comparison of the different euploid cytotypes studied at present for Digitaria adscendens, D. setigera and Oplismenus compositus revealed significant variations in their morphology, depicting increase in some of the characters of polyploid cytotypes. The course of meiosis has been observed to be normal in all the studied populations with high pollen fertility except for two species such as Paspalum dilatatum and P. distichum marked with abnormal meiosis and reduced pollen fertility.  相似文献

Growth in the thoracic region and its adaptation to higher altitude was investigated in boys between 5 to 18 years of Rajput origin at two altitudes, i. e. Rampur Bushahr (800 m above sea level) and Kinnaur (3,000 m above sea level). Both places are located in Himachal Pradesh. The sample includes 405 individuals From Bushahr and 676 individuals from Kinnaur. The results of this study reveal that as the higher altitudes are attained the vital capacity also increases relatively more, and these differences become more pronounced after adolescence, indicating longer time of apnoea. The population living at higher altitudes is also characterised by a significant greater chest length.  相似文献

Data are presented on serological and electrophoretic variants of 18 systems of red cells in 228 individuals belonging to a scheduled tribe (Kanet) and a scheduled caste (Koli) of Kinnar district in Himachal Pradesh, India. Differences in gene frequencies clearly indicate biological distinction in the local population. The possible cause of this genetic heterogeneity is discussed.  相似文献

Isolated tribes in remote areas are important for genetic studies, and one such little known subtribe of the Adi tribe, namely, the Adi Panggi (Pangi) of the Upper Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh, India, was studied for surname distribution to deduce the deviation from random mating and genetic kinship between villages. The estimates of homonymy (homozygosity) vary between villages; husbands show wider variation (0.009 to 0.23) than wives (0.005 to 0.054). The remote villages of Sumsing and Sibum and Geku Town show lower entropy among husbands' surnames than among Panggi wives. The highest equivalent surname number was found among Sibum husbands (9.9), Panggi wives (12.6), and Panggi and non-Panggi wives (13.5). The estimates of unbiased random isonymy among husbands and wives together show the smallest values in Sibum (0.05) and the highest values in Sumsing and Ramku (0.16). The random and nonrandom components of the inbreeding coefficient show avoidance of inbreeding among the Panggi villages (-0.012 to -0.27) except in Sibum (0.012). Genetic kinship between villages based on the Mij distance shows different clusters of villages among husbands and wives. Both the Panggi wives and the Panggi and non-Panggi wives show a similar pattern of clustering between villages. The wide homonymy variation between villages among the patrilocal Adi Panggi indicates differential genetic kinetics among husbands and wives, avoidance of inbreeding, and female-oriented differential gene flow with little effect on the overall intervillage genetic kinship.  相似文献
