Over the past 20 years, the field of foldamers has rapidly increased. Many β-peptides have already been described and shown interesting properties. γ-Peptides have more recently emerged but seem to be very interesting as well. In this review, we will cover every peptidomimetic oligomer that contains a γ-amino acid or an analogue and presents a structural feature. It includes γ-peptides but also hybrid α–γ peptides, β–γ peptides and analogues such as oligoureas or aminoxy acids. We will present the biological properties of these oligomers.  相似文献

β-Casein (β-CN) is a milk protein widely used in food industries because of its mild emulsifying properties due to its amphiphilicity. However, the elements determining its micellization behavior in solution and interfacial behavior at the air–water interface are not well known. In order to study how the forced dimerisation influences functional properties of β-CN, recombinant wild-type β-CN was produced and distal cysteinylated forms of recombinant β-CN were engineered. We show that 1) cysteinylated β-CN formed mainly dimers bridged by disulfide bonds; 2) the process of dimerization adds to the micellization process with temperature and is poorly reversible; 3) covalent disulfide linkage forms at the air–water interface at a lower temperature than in bulk. In conclusion, the location of the cysteinylation in the C-terminus or N-terminus or both is of importance for the properties of β-CN.  相似文献

A novel approach for upgrading both the wrinkle free and softness properties of cotton fabrics without adversely affecting their strength properties using an eco-friendly finishing regimes was investigated. Factors affecting the performance properties of the finished substrate such as pre-treatment, i.e., carboxymethylation (CMC) or ionic-crosslinking, post-treatment with amino functional silicone softener and its concentration, degree of carboxymethylation as well as thermofixation conditions were studied. The obtained results revealed that post-treatment with the amino based silicone micro emulsion (SiE) up to 30 g/L at pH 4 to a wet pickup of 100% followed by drying at 100 °C for 5 min and curing at 170 °C for 3 min results in a remarkable improvement in fabric resiliency (expressed as dry and wet wrinkle recovery angles), as well as in softness degree, without seriously affecting its retained strength. Improvement extent of the aforementioned properties is governed by the nature of the pre-treatment steps. Fixation of the amino-functional silicone softener onto/or within the modified cellulose structure is accompanied by a formation of semi-inter and/or intra-penetrated network (semi-IPN) thereby enhancing both the extent of crosslinking and networking as well as providing very high softness. FTIR analysis proved the formation of Si–O–Si–cellulose complex. Scanning electron micrograph shows that cotton, CMC and ionic crosslinked cotton fabrics treated with SiE shows higher surface smoothness and considerable reduction in protruding loose fibers, ditches and grooves compared with the untreated one.  相似文献

We report here the synthesis and properties of a family of mixed-valence cyanide-bridged dinuclear complex ions trans-[(L′L4RuII(μ-NC)FeIII(CN)5] (with L = pyridine or 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap) and L′ = pyridine, 4-methoxypyridine (meopy) or 4-dimethylaminopyridine)) whose properties could be adjusted smoothly by changing the acceptor properties of the solvent and the σ donor properties of the L′ pyridine ligand. In solution these complexes exhibit an intense solvent-dependent MM′CT (RuII → FeIII) absorption in the near infrared region. Analysis of this band in different complexes and solvents suggests an enhanced interaction as the energies of the metal centers come closer. From this trend the anion trans-[(dmap)5Ru(μ-NC)Fe(CN)5] (dmap = 4-dimethylaminopyridine) in water is expected to belong to the class II-III, but its spectral properties indicates a ground state with Ru(III)-Fe(II) character. The stabilization of this electronic isomer is probably related to the better donor properties of the hexacyanoferrate(II) moiety and its stronger interaction with water.  相似文献

Gamma radiation is established as a procedure for inactivating bacteria, fungal spores and viruses. Sterilization of soft tissue allografts with high dose 60Co gamma radiation has been shown to have adverse effects on allograft biomechanical properties. In the current study, bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) allografts from 32 mature sheep were divided into two treatment groups: low-dose radiation at 15 kGy (n = 16) and high-dose radiation at 25 kGy (n = 16) with the contralateral limb serving as a 0 kGy (n = 32) non-irradiated control. Half of the tendons from all treatment groups were biomechanically tested to determine bulk BPTB mechanical properties, cancellous bone compressive properties, and interference screw pull-out strength. The remaining tissues were prepared, implanted, and mechanically tested in an acute in vitro anterior crucial ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Low-dose radiation did not adversely affect mechanical properties of the tendon allograft, bone, or ACL reconstruction compared to internal non-irradiated control. However, high-dose radiation compromised bulk tendon load at failure and ultimate strength by 26.9 and 28.9%, respectively (P < 0.05), but demonstrated no negative effect on the cancellous bone compressive properties or interference screw pull-out strength. Our findings suggest that low dose radiation (15 kGy) does not compromise the mechanical integrity of the allograft tissue, yet high dose radiation (25 kGy) significantly alters the biomechanical integrity of the soft tissue constituent.  相似文献

In this study a disproportionating enzyme, 4-α-glucanotransferase (4αGTase), was used to modify the structural properties of rice starch to produce a suitable fat substitute in reduced-fat (RF) mayonnaise. The mayonnaise fat was partially substituted with the 4αGTase-treated starch paste at levels up to 50% in combination with xanthan gum and the physical and rheological properties of the modified RF mayonnaise samples were investigated. All mayonnaises prepared in this study exhibited shear thinning behavior and yield stress. Viscoelastic properties of mayonnaise were characterized using dynamic oscillatory shear test and it was observed that mayonnaises exhibited weak gel-like properties. The magnitude of elastic and loss moduli was also affected by 4αGTase-treated starch concentration and presence of xanthan gum. In relation to microstructure, RF mayonnaise prepared with 3.8 or 5.6 wt% of 4αGTase-treated starch and xanthan gum showed smaller droplets. The use of 5.6 wt% of 4αGTase-treated starch and 0.1 wt% of xanthan gum produced a RF mayonnaise with similar rheological properties and appearances as FF mayonnaise with gum. This study demonstrated a high feasibility for using 4αGTase-treated rice starch as a viable fat replacer in mayonnaise.  相似文献

We determined the variations in the surface physicochemical properties of Listeria monocytogenes Scott A cells that occurred under various environmental conditions. The surface charges, the hydrophobicities, and the electron donor and acceptor characteristics of L. monocytogenes Scott A cells were compared after the organism was grown in different growth media and at different temperatures; to do this, we used microelectrophoresis and the microbial adhesion to solvents method. Supplementing the growth media with glucose or lactic acid affected the electrical, hydrophobic, and electron donor and acceptor properties of the cells, whereas the growth temperature (37, 20, 15, or 8°C) primarily affected the electrical and electron donor and acceptor properties. The nonlinear effects of the growth temperature on the physicochemical properties of the cells were similar for cells cultivated in two different growth media, but bacteria cultivated in Trypticase soy broth supplemented with 6 g of yeast extract per liter (TSYE) were slightly more hydrophobic than cells cultivated in brain heart infusion medium (P < 0.05). Adhesion experiments conducted with L. monocytogenes Scott A cells cultivated in TSYE at 37, 20, 15, and 8°C and then suspended in a sodium chloride solution (1.5 × 10−1 or 1.5 × 10−3 M NaCl) confirmed that the cell surface charge and the electron donor and acceptor properties of the cells had an influence on their attachment to stainless steel.  相似文献

Examination of the scale properties of living organisms and the electronic configuration of crystalline structures suggests that related modeling may be used for both. This paper comments on individual and common properties of the two systems and draws a comparison between them. Both exhibit multiple ‘scales’ separated by complex or forbidden regions and a global ‘overview’ of their scale properties. We conclude that the analogy may provide a fruitful route toward extension of the modeling of both living organisms and electronic materials, by permitting bootstrapping cross-modeling between them.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the relationship between certain “equivalent circuits” and the fundamental flux equations of Nernst and Planck. It is shown that as a direct algebraic consequence of these equations one may construct two types of equivalent circuits for a homogeneous (charged or uncharged) membrane. The one, which we term the “pure electrical equivalent circuit,” correctly predicts all of the electrical properties of the membrane for both steady and transient states. The other, which we call the “mixed equivalent circuit,” predicts the steady state I, Ψ characteristics of the membrane and the steady state ionic fluxes; it is not applicable to non-steady state properties or measurements. We emphasize that with regard to the portrayal of the physical basis of the properties of a homogeneous membrane, the mixed equivalent circuit can be misleading. This is particularly significant because this same circuit can also be used to depict a mosaic membrane, in which case the circuit gives a realistic pictorialization of the physical origin of the membrane properties. It is hoped that our analysis will be of aid to workers in electrophysiology who make use of equivalent circuit terminology in discussing the behavior of the plasma membrane.  相似文献

Pressure perturbation calorimetry (PPC) is a relatively new and efficient technique, to study the volumetric properties of biomolecules in solution. In PPC, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the partial volume of the biomolecule is deduced from the heat consumed or produced after small isothermal pressure jumps (typically ± 5 bar). This strongly depends on the interaction of the biomolecule with the solvent or cosolvent as well as on its packing and internal dynamic properties. This technique, complemented by ultrasound velocity and densitometry, provides valuable insight into the basic thermodynamic properties of solvation and volume effects accompanying phase transitions and interactions of biomolecular systems. Here we review data on protein folding, ligand binding processes, and phospholipid phase transitions, together with discussion of interpretation and further significant applications.  相似文献

The effect of hydration on the mechanical properties of osteonal bone, in directions parallel and perpendicular to the bone axis, was studied on three length scales: (i) the mineralized fibril level (~100 nm), (ii) the lamellar level (~6 µm); and (iii) the osteon level (up to ~30 µm).We used a number of techniques, namely atomic force microscopy (AFM), nanoindentation and microindentation. The mechanical properties (stiffness, modulus and/or hardness) have been studied under dry and wet conditions. On all three length scales the mechanical properties under dry conditions were found to be higher by 30–50% compared to wet conditions. Also the mechanical anisotropy, represented by the ratio between the properties in directions parallel and perpendicular to the osteon axis (anisotropy ratio, designated here by AnR), surprisingly decreased somewhat upon hydration. AFM imaging of osteonal lamellae revealed a disappearance of the distinctive lamellar structure under wet conditions. Altogether, these results suggest that a change in mineralized fibril orientation takes place upon hydration.  相似文献

New amphiphilic polysaccharides based on alginate-grafted-Poly (ε-caprolactone) or alg-g-PCL bearing two kinds of PCL chains with different molar masses (1250 and 530 gmol−1) with various amounts from 3% to 15% were prepared. Rheological properties in aqueous solutions of such systems have been investigated as a function of polymer concentration, added salt and temperature in semi-dilute regime. Strong hydrophobic intermolecular associations were clearly demonstrated in pure water whatever the PCL chain length and extend of modification. Increasing polymer concentration, grafting rate and/or PCL chains length can lead to a structured liquid behaviour. Rheological properties of the most organized system have been found independent to the temperature (until 60 °C). In salt media, a strong dependence of hydrophobic interactions to the length of PCL chains was observed. For MPCL = 1250 g.mol−1 the screening of charges promotes the establishment of intermolecular interactions and leads to a strong physical gel for the highest grafting rates. For MPCL = 530 g mol−1, ionic strength leads to a decrease of rheological properties when increasing grafting rate. This result may indicate an increase of hydrophobic clusters even in the entangled regime. This unusual behaviour opens the ways for the preparation of suitable hydrogels for drug release.  相似文献

In order to maintain their native properties, cryopreserved tendons are usually used in biomechanical research and in transplantation of allogenic tendon grafts. The use of different study protocols leads to controversy in literature and thus complicates the evaluation of the current literature. The aim of this study consisted in examining the influence of different freezing and thawing temperatures on the mechanical properties of tendons. 60 porcine tendons were frozen at either −80 °C or −20 °C for 7 days and thawed at room or body temperature for 240 or 30 min, respectively. A subgroup of ten tendons was quick-frozen with liquid nitrogen (−196 °C) for 2 s before cryopreservation. Biomechanical testing was performed with a material testing machine and included creep, cyclic and load-to-failure tests. The results showed that freezing leads to a reduced creep strain after constant loading and to an increased secant modulus. Freezing temperature of −80 °C increased the secant modulus and decreased the strain at maximum stress, whereas thawing at room temperature reduced the maximum stress, the strain at initial tendon failure and the Young’s Modulus. Quick-freezing led to increased creep strain after constant loading, increased strain at initial failure in the load-to-failure test, and decreased strain at maximum stress. When cryopreserving, tendons for scientific or medical reasons, freezing temperature of −20 °C and thawing temperature of 37.5 °C are recommended to maintain the native properties of tendons. A treatment with liquid nitrogen in the sterilization process of tendon allografts is inadvisable because it alters the tendon properties negatively.  相似文献

Mathematical models of mutually interacting reverberatory neural circuits exhibit decision-making properties that can account for behavioral mode selection in terms of identifiable neural subsystems and measurable variables, without the need for invoking concepts such as “drive,” “motivation,” or “instinct”. The models can account for an animal's ability to persist in a given behavioral mode under appropriate stimulus conditions and to rapidly switch modes in response to significant stimulus changes via the properties of stable steady states, thresholds for steady-state transitions, and the lack of intrinsic oscillations.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to evaluate β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as a vehicle, either singly or in blends with lactose (spray-dried or monohydrate), for preparing a meloxicam tablet. Aqueous solubility of meloxicam in presence of β-CD was investigated. The tablets were prepared by direct compression and wet granulation techniques. The powder blends and the granules were evaluated for angle of repose, bulk density, compressibility index, total porosity, and drug content. The tablets were subjected to thickness, diameter, weight variation test, drug content, hardness, friability, disintegration time, and in vitro dissolution studies. The effect of β-CD on the bioavailability of meloxicam was also investigated in human volunteers using a balanced 2-way crossover study. Phase-solubility studies indicated an AL-type diagram with inclusion complex of 1∶1 molar ratio. The powder blends and granules of all formulations showed satisfactory flow properties, compressibility, and drug content. All tablet formations prepared by direct compression or wet granulation showed acceptable mechanical properties. The dissolution rate of meloxicam was significantly enhanced by inclusion of β-CD in the formulations up to 30%. The mean pharmacokinetic parameters (Cmax, Ke, and area under the curve [AUC]0−∞) were significantly increased in presence of β-CD. These results suggest that β-CD would facilitate the preparation of meloxicam tablets with acceptable mechanical properties using the direct compression technique as there is no important difference between tablets prepared by direct compression and those prepared by wet granulation. Also, β-CD is particularly useful for improving the oral bioavailablity of meloxicam.  相似文献

1,2,3-Benzothiazole-7-thiocarboxylic acid-S-methylester (commercially known as Actigard® AM-87) was utilized to impart cotton fabric durable antimicrobial properties. Finishing treatment was carried out under a variety of conditions. The latter were included, effect of pH, concentration of antibacterial agents, curing temperature and curing time. The effect of fabric construction, mercerization, and dyeing with different dyestuff were also investigated. The study was also extended to investigate the technical feasibility of combining antimicrobial finishing treatment in question with other finishing treatment generally carried out on cotton fabric, like soft finishing and crease recovery finishing. The treated fabrics were monitored for antimicrobial properties before and after washing. The treated fabrics were also evaluated for the physio-mechanical properties like fabric tensile strength, elongation at break (or bursting strength for knitted fabric), wettability, crease recovery angle, whiteness index and roughness. Results obtained show that, the most appropriate conditions for treatment cotton fabric with Actigard® are: padding the cotton fabric in aqueous solution containing 6% Actigard® at pH 5 (adjusted using formic acid) then squeezed to wet pick up of 100%, dried at 80 °C for 5 min then cured at 100 °C for 150 s. The untreated cotton fabric did not show any antimicrobial activity towards Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli. Treatment of cotton fabric with Actigard® improves its antimicrobial properties towards S. aureus or E. coli. It is also observed that, treatment of cotton fabric with Actigard® marginally decreases fabric tensile strength, elongation at break, roughness and WI, whereas; both wettability and crease recovery angle remain practically intact. This was observed whether the fabric was pre-mercerized or not.  相似文献

Eighteen strains of obligately oligotrophic bacteria that grow in a medium containing 1 mg of organic carbon per liter and do not grow in a rich medium (5 g/liter of nutrient) were isolated as dominant organisms from the oligotrophic water of Lake Biwa. The growth properties of these, especially of five strains, were examined. The maximum cell yield ranged from 8.5×104/ml to 2.3×106/ml, and their doubling times ranged from 6.6/h to 11.8/h in LT10–4 medium (0.5 mg trypticase and 0.05 mg yeast extract in 1 liter of filtered and aged lake water). They also showed good growth in lake water medium without adding nutrients. The optimum concentrations for their growth were 5 mg/1, 5–50 mg/1, 50 mg/1, or 500 mg/1, depending on the strains. They utilized glutamate, glycine, serine, and glycolate, but not acetate, proline, or leucine. Several properties were examined. Their growth properties were very different from those of oligotrophs or oligocarbophiles isolated by other researchers.  相似文献

Fluorescence properties of Early Cambrian acritarchs were investigated using Leica das Mikroskop (DM) microscopy with a mercury lamp. Well-preserved autoflurescence properties show a correlation between acritarchs morphology and the intensity of emitted fluorescence. In accordance with the fluorescence intensity of organic cell walls, two groups of microfossils were distinguished. Results of observation in this study, which are consistent with those of the previous foreign studies, are in good agreement with regular difference in autofluorescence intensity among palynomorphs reported by McPhilemy (1998). Spores and algae, including Botryococcus, have very bright fluorescence while acritarchs often show less intense fluorescence. Single-cell force spectroscopy (SCFS) is becoming a widely used method to quantify the adhesion of a living cell to a substrate, another cell or tissue. The high sensitivity of SCFS permits determining the contributions of individual cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) to the adhesion force of an entire cell. However, to prepare adherent cells for SCFS, they must first be detached from tissue-culture flasks or plates. EDTA and trypsin are often applied for this purpose. Because cellular properties can be affected by this treatment, cells need to recover before being further characterized by SCFS. Here we introduce atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based SCFS to measure the mechanical and adhesive properties of HeLa cells and mouse embryonic kidney fibroblasts while they are recovering after detachment from tissue-culture. We find that mechanical and adhesive properties of both cell lines recover quickly (<10 min) after detachment using EDTA, while trypsin-detached fibroblasts require >60 min to fully recover. Our assay introduced to characterize the recovery of mammalian cells after detachment can in future be used to estimate the recovery behavior of other adherent cell types.  相似文献

The aim of the work was to recognize the effect of cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se) onto properties of plastid lipid membranes. Plastids were isolated from wheat calli cultured during 2 weeks on Murashige–Skoog media with presence/absence of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Plastids obtained in presence of 2,4-D represented an earlier developmental stage in comparison to those, got in absence of 2,4-D, which reached a pre-chloroplast stage. The studied metals were introduced to culture media separately (2 μM Na2SeO4 or 800 μM CdCl2) or together (Se + Cd). The changes of following properties of plastid envelope membrane caused by both metals were measured: composition of main lipid fractions, their fatty acid saturation, membrane fluidity, lipid peroxidation and membrane zeta potential. Results of experiments led to the conclusion that galactolipid component plays a predominant role in modification of plastid membrane properties responding to Cd and Se addition. It was shown that galactolipid protecting reaction to Cd toxic action can consists in increased plastid envelope membrane stiffness. The presence of hormone (2,4-D) and Se did not counterbalance Cd toxic effects (at least under concentration level applied in the experiments). Se applied separately can probably stimulate plastid/chloroplast transformation in wheat cells by increasing a galactolipid unsaturation degree. The zeta potentials seem to be important physicochemical parameter in determination of properties of membranes exposed to metal stress conditions.  相似文献
