The influence of shoot architectural position on growth andbranching pattern of young Cedrus atlantica (Endl.) Manettiex Carrière trees were studied. Extension growth andtype of axillary products (lateral bud, sylleptic short or longshoots) of annual shoots of increasing branching order (mainstem, branches and branchlets) were recorded weekly during the1993 growing season. Annual final shoot length, duration ofextension, and maximum extension rate decreased with increasingbranching order. Sylleptic axillary shoots occurred only onannual shoots of the main stem and branches and were producedwhen extension rate was at its highest. Differences in growthrate and final length of annual shoots, according to their architecturalposition, were related to differences in the total number anddiversity of types of sylleptic axillary shoots produced. Itis suggested that types and numbers of sylleptic axillary shootsproduced are linked with threshold values for both final lengthand extension rate of the parent shoot. Proliferation of axillary shoots from nodal segments of saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangiana Soul.-Bod.) was achieved on modified Standardi and Catalano (S medium) and Lloyd and McCown (WPM) media containing 1.33 μmol·dm−3 BA and 0.54 μmol·dm−3 NAA. The greatest number of axillary shoots was produced on S-medium with full strength macronutrients. Statistically significant were the differences in biomass of axillary shoots cultured in vessels sealed with plastic closures. Rooting of the shoots was achieved on half strength S medium supplemented with 4.9, 9.8, 14.7 and 19.6 μmol·dm−3 IBA. Rooted plantlets were able to resume independent growth after a short period of acclimatization.  相似文献

The growth of axillary shoots was initiated on nodal stem segments, excised from aseptically grown seedlings of Gentiana acaulis L., G. cruciata L., G. lutea L. and G. purpurea L. In later subcultures, a basal callus tissue developed on the shoots, giving rise to de novo formed buds. Optimum benzyladenine and indoleacetic acid combinations for shoot development were established. They were slightly different in the four species. From 35-70% of shoots rooted spontaneously, except in G. lutea, in which adventitious roots were induced by applying naphthaleneacetic acid. It was conduded that the four Gentiana species were amenable to propagation in vitro. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The manner in which the density of Leymus chinensis increases from a single plant to a dominant population can be understood by tracing the development of a population from early to late stages. Parent shoot density, above‐ground dry weight, spike density, heading rate and spike dry weight, density of spreading shoots (buds/daughter shoots in apical/axillary rhizomes) and clumping shoots (buds/daughter shoots in axillary parent shoots), and young rhizome length and weight were investigated in the same quadrats for a low density/early stage (LE) population and a high density/late stage (HL) population. Clonal growth (buds/daughter shoots formation) and sexual reproduction (spikes formation) increased while rhizome storage (young rhizome weight) decreased during the transition from LE to HL. In a LE population an outward occupation strategy was employed, with a high proportion of spreading shoots. As the population density gradually increased until HL, an inward consolidation strategy increasing shoot amount in previously occupied areas, was adopted. This was characterized by a high proportion of clumping shoots. Interestingly, the trade‐off between spreading and clumping shoots can be adjusted by the duration of young rhizome elongation during a growth season. In other words, compared with a HL population, a LE population shortened the duration of young rhizome elongation during the growth season, which resulted in more time for the production of axillary spreading shoots along the rhizomes, and high amounts and proportions of total spreading shoots. The special growth patterns, that is, trade‐offs among growth forms, allow L. chinensis to establish dominant populations throughout the eastern Eurasian Steppe.  相似文献

Shoot cultures of four genotypes of Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh. were established from adventitious shoots regenerated from internodal stem explants. Stable shoot cultures for all four genotypes were maintained in a continuous culture regime for over one year. The stable shoot cultures were used as explants to investigate the effects of zeatin concentration and genotype on axillary shoot production and growth. The concentration of zeatin significantly affected the production of axillary shoots, with 1.0 mgL–1 zeatin producing the greatest number of shoots (31.0 shoots per culture vessel) while 0.25 mgL–1 zeatin produced the greatest growth (5.9 mg per axillary shoot) when measured by dry weight accumulation per shoot. Branching patterns of the growth units of monocyclic or bicyclic annual shoots on the main axis of 5-year-old red oaks were studied in a plantation in south-western France. For each growth unit, the production of axillary structures associated with each node was described in the form of a sequence. For a given category of growth units, homogeneous zones (i.e. zones in which composition in terms of type of axillary production does not change substantially) were identified on such sequences using a dedicated statistical model called a hidden semi-Markov chain. For instance, on the first growth unit of bicyclic annual shoots, a zone with 1-year-delayed branches was found systematically below a zone with buds and one-cycle-delayed branches. Branching patterns shown by the growth unit of monocyclic annual shoots and on the second growth unit of bicyclic annual shoots were very similar. Branches with a 1-year delay in development tended to be polycyclic at the top of the growth unit and monocyclic lower down. The number of nodes shown by the branched zone of the growth unit of monocyclic annual shoots was stable, irrespective of the total number of nodes of the growth unit. In contrast, the second growth unit of bicyclic annual shoots exhibited a correlation between the number of nodes in the branching zone and the total number of nodes. The contribution made by this method to understanding plant functioning is discussed.  相似文献

A water deficit imposed during the period of terminal male inflorescenceinitiation and early development reduced both the growth rateand the mature size of that organ in Zea mays (cv. Iochief).Growth and development of the axillary shoots, the potentialfemale inflorescences, was inhibited during the episode of waterdeficit but promoted thereafter. As a result, plants which hadbeen subjected to a water deficit at that period produced 2–3mature cobs and relatively large axillary shoots at the lowernodes, whereas plants supplied with water throughout produceda single mature cob and relatively small axillary shoots. A water deficit imposed during other growth phases did not producethis response and, moreover, a further period of deficit imposedlater in development, following a deficit at the sensitive stage,inhibited the enlargement of the axillary shoots invoked bythe earlier deficit. It did not, however, inhibit the enhancedfloral development of those axillary shoots nor reverse theinhibition of tassel growth. Phylloclade explants of Schlumbergera and Rhipsalidopsis were cultured in vitro to produce axillary and adventitious shoots. The explants of both species, taken from greenhouse-grown plants, produced only axillary shoots. There was a pronounced improvement in adventitious shoot formation in phylloclade explants of cultivar CB4 of Rhipsalidopsis by increasing numbers of subcultures of axillary shoots used as donor plants. The axillary shoots generated from the explants were either subcultured to produce successive generations of axillary shoot cultures or made into phylloclade explants and tested for adventitious shoot formation at each subculture. The duration of each subculture varied from 6 to 12 weeks. After the first subculture, sporadic adventitious shoot formation began, and after the third subculture 87% explants of cultivar CB4 produced adventitious shoots at a frequency of about 12 shoots per explant. In contrast, there was no improvement in regenerative ability in explants of cultivar Thor-Olga of Schlumbergera up to third subculture. Adventitious shoots could be produced by callus culture too. Cultivar CB4 was highly regenerative, producing as many as 10 adventitious shoots per square cm of callus. In vitro grown plantlets, when transferred to pots continued to show prolific growth.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Shoot characteristics differ depending on the meristem tissue that they originate from and environmental conditions during their development. This study focused on the effects of plant water status on axillary meristem fate and flowering patterns along proleptic and epicormic shoots, as well as on shoot growth rates on ‘Nonpareil’ almond trees (Prunus dulcis). The aims were (1) to characterize the structural differences between proleptic and epicormic shoots, (2) to determine whether water deficits modify shoot structures differently depending on shoot type, and (3) to determine whether shoot structures are related to shoot growth rates.

Methods

A hidden semi-Markov model of the axillary meristem fate and number of flower buds per node was built for two shoot types growing on trees exposed to three plant water status treatments. The models segmented observed shoots into successive homogeneous zones, which were compared between treatments. Shoot growth rates were calculated from shoot extension measurements made during the growing season.

Key Results

Proleptic shoots had seven successive homogeneous zones while epicormic shoots had five zones. Shoot structures were associated with changes in growth rate over the season. Water deficit (1) affected the occurrence and lengths of the first zones of proleptic shoots, but only the occurrence of the third zone was reduced in epicormic shoots; (2) had a minor effect on zone flowering patterns and did not modify shoot or zone composition of axillary meristem fates; and (3) reduced growth rates, although patterns over the season were similar among treatments.

Conclusions

Two meristem types, with different latency durations, produced shoots with different growth rates and distinct structures. Differences between shoot type structure responses to water deficit appeared to reflect their ontogenetic characteristics and/or resource availability for their development. Tree water deficit appeared to stimulate a more rapid progression through ontogenetic states.  相似文献

Embryonic axes and seedling shoot tips of Juglans nitra L., Black walnut, were cultured in vitro. Significant variation existed among progeny from individual trees for growth of radicles and epicotyls and production of callus and axillary shoots from embryonic axes. The concentration of 6-benzyladenine influenced the growth of the radicle and epicotyl and production of callus and axillary shoots of axes. Axes generally initiated growth quicker on solidified woody plant medium than on Driver and Kuniyuki's walnut medium, but axillary shoot proliferation and elongation were eventually better on liquid Driver and Kuniyuki's walnut medium than on woody plant medium which required an etiolation treatment for microshoot elongation. The concentration of BA also influenced both callus growth and axillary shoot proliferation from seedling shoot tips. Axillary shoots which formed in Driver and Kuniyuki's walnut medium rooted best in sterile vermiculite following a 15 s dip in 10 mM indole-3-butyric acid. Micropropagated plants are growing in the greenhouse.  相似文献

Procedures were developed for the in vitro elimination of Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), Sorghum mosaic virus (SrMV), Sugarcane streak mosaic virus (SCSMV), Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) and Fiji disease virus (FDV) from infected sugarcane. In vitro shoot regeneration, elongation and virus elimination through meristem tissue culture originating from both apical and axillary shoots were compared. The average rates of regeneration and elongation from apical meristem tissues were 91 and 66%, respectively, with the virus-free rate among elongated shoots ranging from 61–92%. Mature axillary buds were cultivated in vitro to produce axillary shoots, from which meristem tissues were excised and cultured. These meristem tissues regenerated (77–100%) and elongated (55–88%) in culture medium at approximately the same rate as the apical meristems. The average virus elimination rate was 90% among elongated shoots derived from mature axillary buds. All five viruses can be eliminated by meristem tissue culture from both apical and axillary shoots using a standardized procedure. The overall average efficiency of virus-free plant production was 45 and 58% from apical and axillary shoots, respectively. There were no significant differences for shoot induction or virus elimination when the meristems were harvested from either the apical or the axillary shoots. This is the first report of SrMV or SCSMV elimination from sugarcane, as well as elimination of any mixed virus infections. This new method of harvesting meristems from axillary buds greatly expands the amount of material available for therapeutic treatments and thereby increases the probability of eliminating viruses from infected sugarcane.  相似文献

Summary A protocol for clonal propagation of eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.) was enhanced by optimizing the shoot multiplication stage using unbranched in vitro-produced shoots. This was achieved by careful selection of different medium components. An optimum range of 10 to 14 axillary shoots was obtained when shoots were cultured on half-strength Quiorin and LePoivre medium containing 10μM filter-sterilized zeatin for 3 wk. Transfer of the treated shoots to cytokinin-free medium containing 0.05% activated charcoal improved both the number and quality of the axillary shoots produced. Maximum axillary bud induction was also accomplished when shoots were pulsed in 1 mM liquid, filter-sterilized zeatin for 3 h, and then transferred to half-strength Quiorin and LePoivre, charcoal-containing medium. Inclusion of 4% sucrose improved the number of axillary shoots obtained. Half strength of the major salts produced an optimum response. Shoots obtained from different cultures (1 to 5 yr old) responded similarly to the applied cytokinin; however, newly induced shoots (4 mo. old) gave a significantly higher response.  相似文献

In vitro vegetative multiplication of sugarbeet was obtained by culturing of inflorescence explants. Subapical segments or 5-mm-long tips from nine varieties developed axillary shoots (up to 50 per tip) on a medium containing indolebutyric acid (IBA) and benzylaminopurine (BAP). Zeatin was ineffective as cytokinin. Gibberellic acid (GA3) enhanced the process. Such vegetative shoots were subsequently isolated and were each allowed to develop up to 20 supplementary axillary shoots on a multiplication medium containing IBA, BAP, and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Abstract. 1. An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of variation among individual plants of Rudbeckia laciniata L. on the distribution and abundance of the aphid Uroleucon rudbeckiae (Fitch).
2. Wild plants were examined repeatedly for up to 21/2 years to obtain information about plant growth and flowering, and about aphid densities on individual plants.
3. Aphid densities on individual plants were positively associated with several measures of plant vigour, including height, growth since previous year, and occurrence of flowers.
4. The colonization of plants by alate aphids was more highly correlated with plant height than with plant exposure. Aphid densities on individual plants were more strongly associated with plant height than with number of colonists.
5. In all years there were many hosts which were never colonized by aphids. Some of these plants produced shoots but did not flower. Experimental infestation of these plants showed that they were unsuitable for aphid growth and reproduction. Some plants which did flower and which escaped aphid infestation were nevertheless suitable hosts. Previously unsuitable host individuals were able to support aphids when grown under glass-house conditions.  相似文献

Correlative inhibition was investigated in plants of Agropyronrepens at two temperatures. Reciprocal inhibition ocrurred betweenthe main shoot apex and the outgrowing axillary shoots, withthe balance of inhibition varying with temperature. Apical dominancewas stronger at 10 °C than at 20 °C , but even at 10°C release of apical dominance by decapitation had onlyminor effects on the timing of outgrowth, growth pattern andrate of dry weight aocumulation of the axillary shoots. Dominanceof the main shoot apex by the axillary shoots was stronger at20 °C than at 10 °C. Removal of axillary buds preventeddecline in size and activity of the main shoot apex ard resultedin increased rates of primordium initiation, leaf emergenceand dry weight accumulation in the main shoot. It is suggestedthat a system of reciprocal dominance provides a mechanism formaintaining the characteristic habit of the grass plant andlimits growth in height of vegetative shoots. Summary Leafy shoots of cauliflower were produced from hypocotyl segments, curd branches (debarassed of existing meristems) and intact curd pieces submitted to various basal media. Adventitious shoot production and axillary bud break exhibited very different nutritive requirements. In each case, an interaction between the plant growth regulators and the composition of the basal medium was discovered. Propagation from curd pieces was dependent on the interaction between plant growth regulators and high sucrose-to-macronutrients ratio in the medium. A medium containing 168 mM sucrose, supplemented with 2.5 μM N6-benzyladenine and 5 μM naphthaleneacetic acid allowed the production of numerous shoots without any hyperhydric symptoms.  相似文献

Clonal propagation is important for the survival and maintenance of the common reed Phragmites australis. Pot culture experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of lead (Pb) concentration (0, 500, 1500, 3000, 4500 mg·kg?1) and water stress on the clonal reproductive ability of this species. The Pb concentration found in plant organs, in decreasing order, was roots >shoots >rhizomes. There was a negative relationship between the growth of clonal propagative modules (excluding axillary shoot buds) and Pb concentrations, which caused a decrease in biomass, rhizome growth and number of axillary and apical rhizome buds. Daughter axillary shoots exhibited a tolerance strategy, with no significant change in their number; the axillary and apical rhizome buds, daughter apical rhizome shoots and rhizomes exhibited compensatory growth during the late stage of Pb (excluding 4500 mg·kg?1) treatment in a wet environment. Pb applications above 500 mg·kg?1 reduced these parameters significantly in the drought treatment, except for the number of axillary shoot buds, which did not change. Our results indicate that clonal propagative resistance to Pb contamination can occur via tolerance strategies, compensatory growth and a Pb allocation strategy, enabling these reeds to maintain population stability in wet environments. However, clonal modular growth and reproductive ability were inhibited significantly by the interaction between drought and Pb, which would cause a decline in P. australis populations in a dry environment. Lead concentrations of 4500 and 500 mg·kg?1 in soils might meet or exceed the Pb tolerance threshold of clonally propagated reeds in wet and dry environments, respectively.  相似文献

Background and Aims: Precocious flowering in apple trees is often associated witha smaller tree size. The hypothesis was tested that floral evocationin axillary buds, induced by dwarfing rootstocks, reduces thevigour of annual shoots developing from these buds comparedwith shoots developing from vegetative buds. Methods: The experimental system provided a wide range of possible treevigour using ‘Royal Gala’ scions and M.9 (dwarfing)and MM.106 (non-dwarfing) as rootstocks and interstocks. Second-yearannual shoots were divided into growth units corresponding toperiods (flushes) of growth namely, vegetative spur, extensiongrowth unit, uninterrupted growth unit, floral growth unit (bourse)and extended bourse. The differences between the floral andvegetative shoots were quantified by the constituent growthunits produced. Key Results: The dwarfing influence was expressed, firstly, in reduced proportionsof shoots that contained at least one extension growth unitand secondly, in reduced proportions of bicyclic shoots (containingtwo extension growth units) and shoots with an uninterruptedgrowth unit. In treatments where floral shoots were present,they were markedly less vigorous than vegetative shoots withrespect to both measures. In treatments with M.9 rootstock,vegetative and floral shoots produced on average 0·52and 0·17 extension growth units, compared with 0·77extension growth units per shoot in the MM.106 rootstock treatment.Remarkably, the number of nodes per extension growth unit wasnot affected by the rootstock/interstock treatments. Conclusions: These results showed that rootstocks/interstocks affect thetype of growth units produced during the annual growth cycle,reducing the number of extension growth units, thus affectingthe composition and vigour of annual shoots. This effect isparticularly amplified by the transition to flowering inducedby dwarfing rootstocks. The division of annual shoot into growthunits will also be useful for measuring and modelling effectsof age on apple tree architecture.  相似文献
