Canopy CO2-exchange rates (CER), air temperatures, and dew points were measured throughout ten days during the 1987 growing season for cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L) Moench], and five soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.] cultivars, and throughout seven days in 1988, on maize (Zea maize L.). The objective was to determine if the decline in CER per unit light during the afternoon is associated with a vapor pressure deficit (VPD) increase. Some of the soybean and maize plots were kept as dry as possible. A VPD term significantly contributed (P0.05) to a canopy CER regression model in 54 of 80 data sets in 1987. Grain sorghum was less sensitive than the well-watered soybean genotypes to an increasing VPD (P0.05) on three of the ten measurement days and less sensitive than cotton (P0.05) on only one day. Cotton demonstrated less VPD sensitivity than soybean (P0.05) on one day. The moisture stressed soybean plots showed a greater CER sensitivity to VPD (P0.05) than the well-watered soybean plots. In 1988, the frequently irrigated maize plots were less sensitive to VPD (P0.05) than the rain-fed plots early in the season, before the rain-fed plots were excessively damaged by moisture stress. These results indicate that the afternoon declines in canopy CER found in a number of different species are associated with increases in the VPD; recent work of others suggests that this may be due to partial stomatal closure.Abbreviations CER carbon dioxide exchange rate - VPD vapor pressure deficit - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density - DAP days after planning  相似文献

Variations in soil water, crop yield and fine roots of 3–4 year-old Grevillea robusta Cunn. and Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp. growing in association with maize (Zea mays L.) were examined in semiarid Kenya during the long rains of 1996 and 1997. Even although tree roots penetrated more deeply than maize roots, maximum root length densities for both tree species and maize occurred in the top 200 mm of the soil profile where soil moisture was frequently recharged by rains. Populations of roots in plots containing trees were dominated by tree roots at the beginning of the growing season but because tree roots died and maize root length increased during the cropping season, amounts of tree and maize roots were similar at the end of the season. Thus, there was evidence of temporal separation of root activity between species, but there was no spatial separation of the rooting zones of the trees and crops within that part of the soil profile occupied by crop roots. Tree root length density declined with increasing distances from rows of trees and with depth in the soil profile. Although Grevillea trees were largest, plots containing G. sepium trees always contained more tree roots than plots containing G. robusta trees and Gliricidia was more competitive with maize than Grevillea. Overall, Gliricidia reduced crop yield by about 50% and Grevillea by about 40% relative to crop yield in control plots lacking trees and reductions of crop yield were greatest close to trees. There was less soil moisture in plots containing trees than in control plots. Such difference between control plots and plots containing trees were maximal at the end of the dry season and there was always less soil moisture close to trees than elsewhere in the plots. Plots containing Gliricidia trees contained less soil water than plots containing Grevillea trees.  相似文献

Rye (Secale cereale L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) are commonly double cropped with soybean (Glycine max L.). Recent greenhouse studies have shown variability in plant-parasitic nematode response to cool season grass species and cultivars. However, subsequent soybean performance was not affected by previous annual ryegrass cultivar in the green-house. The objective of this research was to determine whether winter cover crop species or cultivars affected nematode populations and subsequent performance of soybean in teh field. Four cultivars of annual ryegrass, wheat, and rye, and a fallow control were seeded on a Suffolk sandy loam (fine-loamy, siliceous, thermic Typic Hapuldult) soil in each of three years. Nematode-susceptible soybeans were seeded following forage removal. Soil samples for nematode counts were taken immediately before soybean harvest each year. In another experiment, one cultivar each of annual ryegrass, wheat, and rye, and a fallow control were followed by three soybean cultivars selected for differing nematode susceptibility. Grass cultivars did not affect nematode populations under succedding soybean. The only nematodes affected by grass species in either experiment were Pratylenchus spp., Heterodera glycines Ichinohe, and Tylenchorhynchus claytoni (Kofoid and White) Chitwood. Nematode population means were usually low following ryegrass and high following the fallow control. High soybean yields followed the fallow control, and low soybean yields followed annual ryegrass.  相似文献

Summary Attempts were made to obtain intergeneric hybrids between Diplotaxis siifolia, a wild species, and cultivars of Brassica (B. campestris, B. juncea, and B. napus). The crosses showed unilateral incompatibility. When the wild species was used as female parent, pollen germination and pollen tube growth were normal, but hybrid seeds aborted due to post-fertilization barriers. Reciprocal crosses (cultivars as female parent) showed strong pre-fertilization barriers; although pollen grains showed germination, pollen tubes failed to enter the stigma. Hybrids were realized in two of the crosses, D. siifolia x B. juncea and D. siifolia x B. napus, through ovary culture. The hybrids were multiplied in vitro by multiplication of axillary shoots, or somatic embryogenesis. Detailed studies were carried out on the hybrid D. siifolia x B. juncea. F1 hybrids had shrivelled anthers and were pollen sterile. Amphiploids of this hybrid showed 60% pollen fertility and produced seeds upon self-pollination as well as backcross pollination with the pollen of B. juncea.  相似文献

Prospects for the applications ofrol genes for crop improvement are discussed. As suggested in many reports, rol genes are suitable tools to modify plant developmental processes, such as formation of adventitious roots and release of axillary buds from apical dominance. Practical applications, however, might be hampered by the many pleiotropic side effects that are observed in plants transformed withrol genes. Alternative approaches need to be developed, therefore, to overcome these undesired effects. We offer a novel approach for application that is clearly different from earlier strategies, and that is based on the application ofrol genes incombination plants; i.e., plants consisting of an untransformed scion grafted on a rootstock transformed with arol gene. In rose it was demonstrated for the first time that expression ofrol genes in rootstocks led to an accelerated release of axillary buds of the untransformed scion, but without the transmission of many undesired pleiotropic effects. We expect that this stimulation will result in a changed plant architecture leading to a more efficient production of roses. Alternatively, the pleiotropic effects may be overcome by employingrol genes that are driven by organ- or tissue-specific promoters, leading to a more defined expression of these genes.  相似文献

A shipment of South African corn (1989) exported to Taiwan, was analyzed for various ear-rot fungi andFusarium mycotoxins. Two sets of samples, one from the points of origin in South Africa prior to shipment, and the other from the end-point distributors in Taiwan, were studied. Surface-sterilized kernels were plated onto two different agar media and the fungal colonies identified. High Performance Liquid Chromatography was used to analyze mycotoxin levels. The predominant ear-rot fungi, in decreasing order of isolation frequency, wereFusarium subglutinans, F. moniliforme, Diplodia maydis andF. graminearum. Aspergillus flavus andA. parasiticus were not isolated from samples prior to export, but a small number ofA. flavus isolates were found after shipment. The predominant mycotoxins were fumonisins B1 (0–865 ng/g) and B2 (0–250 ng/g). Low levels of moniliformin (390 ng/g) were detected in some samples before shipment. Zearalenone (25 ng/g), and nivalenol (120 ng/g) were detected in two out of 32 samples taken in Taiwan. The samples contained no detectable levels of either aflatoxins (>0.5 ng/g) or deoxynivalenol (>100 ng/g) before or after shipment.Abbreviations RSA South Africa(n) - FB1 fumonisin B1 - FB2 fumonisin B2 - ETVL eastern Transvaal - WTVL western Transvaal  相似文献

Two Carbon-nitrogen interaction models were developed, one, expressed as DM=DM 0 exp(CN 1 N), was for growth of Gramineae (rice, wheat, and maize) and root crops (potato, sweet potato, and sugar beet), the other DM =DM 0+CN I N for Leguminosae (soybean, field bean, and aduki bean), where, DM is dry weight of plant at a given time, N is the amount of nitrogen accumulated in plant at a given time, DM 0 is the initial amount of dry weight, and CN 1 or CN 1 is the carbon-nitrogen index. The CN 1 value changed with the amount of nitrogen absorbed at the time of harvest (Nh), indicating that the relationship between the CN 1 value and Nh fitted to a hyperbolic curve as follows: CN 1= 1/(a Nh + b), where, a and b are the coefficients of the equation. In rice, coefficients a and b were estimated by the Gauss-Newton method. The CN 1, value of Leguminosae was almost constant regardless of Nh. It is thus concluded that the carbon-nitrogen interaction was significantly different between Leguminosae and other crops (Gramineae and root crops).  相似文献

Summary The insecticidal cry (crystal) genes from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been used for insect control both as biopesticides and in transgenic plants. Discovery of new insecticidal genes is of importance for delaying the development of resistance in target insects. The diversity of Bt strains facilitates isolation of new types of cry and vip (vegetative insecticidal protein) genes. PCR is a useful technique for quick and simultaneous screening of Bt strains for classification and prediction of insecticidal activities. PCR together with other methods of analysis such as RFLP, gene sequence determination, electrophoretic, immunological and chromatographic analysis of Cry proteins and insect bioassays for evaluation of toxicity have been employed for identification of new insecticidal proteins. Some other new approaches have also been devised. Many Bt strains with novel insecticidal genes have been found. A desired combination of Cry proteins can be assembled via site-specific recombination vectors into a recipient Bt strain to create a genetically improved biopesticide. For better pest control, the cry genes have been transferred to plants. Stacking of more than one insecticidal gene is required for resistance management in transgenic crops. Modification of Cry proteins through protein engineering for increasing the toxicity and/or the insecticidal spectrum is also a promising approach, but requires detailed understanding of the structure and function of these proteins and analysis of toxin-receptor interactions. More research into this area will provide useful insights for the design of toxins for management of insect resistance. Insecticidal genes from other bacteria and plants are also being examined for their potential for deployment in transgenic crops. Stringent implementation of resistance management is needed for maintaining the efficacy of Bt transgenic crops and deriving maximum economic and environmental benefit.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to assess whether agroforestry species have the ability to acquire P from pools unavailable to maize. Tithonia diversifolia(Hemsley) A. Gray, Tephrosia vogelii Hook f., Zea mays and Lupinus albusL. were grown in rhizopots and pH change and depletion of inorganic and organic P pools measured in the rhizosphere. Plants were harvested at the same growth stage, after 56 days for maize and white lupin and 70 days for tithonia and tephrosia, and the rhizosphere sampled. The rhizosphere was acidified by tithonia (pH change –0.3 units to pH 4.8) and lupins (–0.2 units to 4.9), alkalinised by tephrosia (+0.4 units to pH 5.4), and remained unchanged with maize growth. Concurrent with acidification in the rhizosphere of tithonia there was a decline in resin-P (0.8 g P g–1). However, there was also a decline in NaOH extractable inorganic P (NaOH-Pi) (5.6 g P g–1 at the root surface) and organic P pools (NaOH-Po) (15.4 g P g–1 at 1.5 mm from the root), which would not be expected without specific P acquisition mechanisms. Alkalinisation of tephrosia rhizosphere was accompanied by changes in all measured pools, although the large depletion of organic P (21.6 g P g–1 at 5 mm from the root) suggests that mineralisation, as well as desorption of organic P, was stimulated. The size of changes of both pH and P pools varied with distance away from the rhizoplane. Decline of more recalcitrant P pools with the growth of the agroforestry species contrasted with the effect of maize growth, which was negligible on resin-P and NaOH-Pi, but led to an accumulation of P as NaOH-Po (14.2 g P g–1 at 5 mm from the root). Overall the depletion of recalcitrant P pools, particularly Po, suggests that the growth of tithonia and tephrosia enhance desorption and dissolution of P, while also enhancing organic P mineralisation. Both species appear to have potential for agroforestry technologies designed to enhance the availability of P to crops, at least in the short term.  相似文献

Summary Information is limited on soil contamination of leaves from field-grown row crops, especially with respect to aluminum (Al) analyses. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of washing leaf samples with either deionized water or detergent solution on elemental analyses for several agronomic crop plants. The crop plants sampled were corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.), grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The crops were grown on a range of soil types, soil pH values, and tillage practices. Samples of upper leaves and lower leaves were collected separately. The samples were either not washed, washed with deionized water, or washed with detergent solution. After drying, grinding, and digesting, the samples were analyzed for Al, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu). For all crop plants and conditions studied, there was no effect on measured N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Zn, or Cu concentrations, but measured Al and Fe concentrations were influenced by washing. In general, washing had a greater effect on Al analyses than on Fe analyses. Soybean samples were most affected by washing, while wheat samples seemed to be least affected. The results reflected greater contamination of lower leaves than upper leaves. Decontamination procedures appear necessary prior to Al and Fe analyses of field-grown crop plants.  相似文献

A field experiment in western Kenya assessed whether the agroforestry species Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsley) A. Gray, Tephrosia vogelii Hook f., Crotalaria grahamiana Wight & Arn. and Sesbania sesban (L) Merill. had access to forms of soil P unavailable to maize, and the consequences of this for sustainable management of biomass transfer. The species were grown in rows at high planting density to ensure the soil under rows was thoroughly permeated by roots. Soil samples taken from beneath rows were compared to controls, which included a bulk soil monolith enclosed by iron sheets within the tithonia plot, continuous maize, and bare fallow plots. Three separate plant biomass samples and soil samples were taken at 6-month intervals, over a period of 18 months. The agroforestry species produced mainly leaf biomass in the first 6 months but stem growth dominated thereafter. Consequently, litterfall was greatest early in the experiment (0–6 months) and declined with continued growth. Soil pH increased by up to 1 unit (from pH 4.85) and available P increased by up to 38% (1 g P g–1) in agroforestry plots where biomass was conserved on the field. In contrast, in plots where biomass was removed, P availability decreased by up to 15%. Coincident with the declines in litterfall, pH decreased by up to 0.26 pH units, plant available P decreased by between 0.27 and 0.72 g g–1 and Po concentration decreased by between 8 and 35 g g–1 in the agroforestry plots. Declines in Po were related to phosphatase activity (R2=0.65, P<0.05), which was greater under agroforestry species (0.40–0.50 nmol MUB s–1 g–1) than maize (0.28 nmol MUB s–1 g–1) or the bare fallow (0.25 nmol MUB s–1 g–1). Management of tithonia for biomass transfer, decreased available soil P by 0.70 g g–1 and Po by 22.82 g g–1. In this study, tithonia acquired Po that was unavailable to maize. However, it is apparent that continuous cutting and removal of biomass would lead to rapid depletion of P stored in organic forms.  相似文献

In temperate climates with a precipitation surplus during autumn and winter, nitrogen (N) catch crops can help to reduce nitrogen losses from cropping systems by absorbing nitrogen from the soil and transfer it to a following main crop. In two field experiments the catch crop species winter rye (Secale cereale) and forage rape (Brassica napus ssp. oleifera (Metzg.) Sinsk) or oil radish (Raphanus sativus spp. oleiferus (DC.) Metzg.) were planted end of August and 3 weeks later with a non-limiting supply of N and zero-N controls. In the next spring catch crops were incorporated into the soil. In Expt 1, N transfer was measured as (i) the N uptake of a potato test crop, grown with zero and 12.5 g m–2 N applied, and (ii) the increase in soil mineral N (0–30 cm) in uncropped soil covered with polythene film. In Expt 2, N transfer was measured as the increase in soil mineral N in covered cylinders placed in uncropped soil (in situ incubation). Subsidiary laboratory incubations were performed in Expt 2. In Expt 1, the apparent recovery in potato of fertilizer N (R f) was 0.56. The recovery in potato of N mineralized from 'native' N pools other than catch crop material (R n) ranged from 0.43 to 0.51, depending on the value assumed for the depth of N extraction by potato roots. The average recovery in potato of incorporated catch crop N (R c) was 0.34. Expressed as `fertilizer N replacement factor' (F r) the latter was 0.61 (i.e. 1 kg of N in catch crop material counts for 0.61 kg fertilizer N). Under the film in Expt 1 the fraction net mineralization of incorporated catch crop N (M n) was 0.36 on August 11 and 0.43 on October 18. In Expt 2, the average value of M n was 0.31, which was lower than in Expt 1 and probably associated with the drier soil in Expt 2. In the laboratory incubations (20°C) M n showed values up to 0.54 after 84 days with the largest rates of change in mineralization occuring early after the start of the incubation. In conjunction with literature data it is concluded that cultivation of nitrogen catch crops shows promise as a means to reduce N input and N losses in temperate climates with wet winters.  相似文献

The Barber-Cushman mechanistic nutrient uptake model which has been utilized extensively to describe and predict nutrient uptake by crop plants at different stages of crop growth was evaluated for its ability to predict the Zn uptake by rice seedlings. Uptake of the nutrient is, therefore, determined by the rate of nutrient supply to the root surface by mass flow and diffusion. Inter root competition and time dependent root density are accounted for by soil volume that delivers nutrients. The radii of these cylinders decline with increasing density. Since mass flow and diffusion each supply zinc to the root, the process can be described mathematically using the model of Barber-Cushman (1984). The 11 parameters of the model for the uptake by rice cultivars were measured by established experimental techniques. Zinc uptake at different growth stages predicted by the model was compared to measured zinc uptake by rice cultivars grown on sandy loam soil in a green house. Predicted zinc uptake was significantly correlated with observed uptake r 2=0.99**. Sensitivity analysis was also used to investigate the impact of changes in soil nutrient supply, root morphological and root uptake kinetic parameters on simulated nutrient uptake. Overall results of sensitivity analysis indicate that the half distance between root axes, rate of root growth and water flux affect the uptake of zinc particularly at their higher values rather than at lower values and DaZn is the most sensitive parameter for zinc uptake at its lower values.  相似文献

Eight formulations of Penicillium oxalicum (FOR1 to FOR8) were obtained by the addition of various ingredients, in two separate steps of the production and drying of P. oxalicum conidia. These formulations were then evaluated against tomato wilt in three glasshouse (G1 to G3) and two field (F1 and F2) experiments. All formulations were applied to seedlings in seedbeds 7 days before transplanting at a rate of 107 spores g−1 seedbed substrate. The conidial viability of each formulation was estimated by measuring germination just after fluid bed-drying, before seedbed application and after 1 and 2 years of storage at 4 °C under vacuum. The densities of P. oxalicum were estimated in the seedbed substrate and in the rhizosphere of three plants per treatment just before transplanting. Initial conidial viability of formulations just after fluid bed-drying was approx. 80%, except for FOR1, FOR4, and FOR7 which were 60%. The initial viability was maintained up to 40–50% for 2 years of storage at 4 °C under vacuum, except for FOR1. All formulations had 50% viability at application time. Populations of P. oxalicum in the seedbed substrate just before transplanting were >106 cfu g−1 soil in G3 and F2; populations in rhizosphere were also >106 cfu g−1 fresh root, except for FOR3, FOR5, and FOR6 in G2. A range of 22–64% of disease reduction was observed with all formulations, although these reductions were not significant (p = 0.05) for FOR1, FOR4, and FOR5 in any experiment. Contrast analysis showed significant differences between biological treatments and untreated control (p = 0.05) in all experiments, but no significant differences between biological and chemical treatments. Initial conidial viability of P. oxalicum in formulations and populations of P. oxalicum in the seedbed substrate explained 78.26% of the variability in P. oxalicum populations in tomato rhizosphere before transplanting. Disease incidence in untreated plants was negatively correlated (r = −0.54) with the percentage of disease control. The relationship between the viability of formulations, the populations of P. oxalicum in seedbed and rhizosphere, and the control of tomato wilt is discussed.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal patterns of soil fertility and soil solution chemistry in a multi-strata agroforestry system with perennial crops were analysed as indicators for the effects of crop species and management measures on soil conditions under permanent agriculture in central Amazonia. The study was carried out in a plantation with locally important tree crop species and a leguminous cover crop at two fertilization levels on a xanthic Ferralsol. Soil fertility to 2 m soil depth was evaluated 3.5 years after the establishment of the plantation, and soil solution chemistry at 10, 60 and 200 cm soil depth was monitored over 2 years. Several soil fertility characteristics exhibited spatial patterns within the multi-strata plots which reflected the differing properties of the plant species and their management, including the fertilizer input. Significant differences between species could be detected to 150 cm depth, and between fertilization treatments to 200 cm depth. Favourable effects on nutrient availability in the soil were found for annatto (Bixa orellana) (P, K) and cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflorum) (Ca, Mg) in comparison with peach palm (Bactris gasipaes) and Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa). Nutrient concentrations of the soil solution showed pronounced fluctuations in the topsoil, corresponding to fertilizer applications. Large nutrient concentrations in the soil solution were accompanied by increased concentrations of aluminium and low pH values, caused by exchange reactions between fertilizer and sorbed acidity and reinforced by the acidifying effect of nitrification. The soil solution under the leguminous cover crop Pueraria phaseoloides had relatively large N concentrations during periods when those under the tree crops were small, and this could partly explain why no yield responses to N fertilization were observed at this site.  相似文献

Inter-species competition for applied nutrients may be managed by weed control in cultivated communities. However, intra-crop competition may still occur. Thus, regarding a fertilizer band as a finite nutrient source, individual rows of a cereal crop may compete for the applied nitrogen. The aim was to explore the partition of applied N between crop rows affected by the displacement of the fertilizer band relative to the rows. In a micro-plot experiment, a 15N-ammonium–15N-nitrate solution was injected in four positions parallel to two rows of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare). The course of 15N crop uptake in each row was estimated by a sigmoid growth function using eight samplings during the elongation phase. The estimated parameters were used for calculating the asymptotic value (a), the time until a/2 was reached (T0.5a), and the uptake rate at this time (MaxRate), and related to the distance between the crop row and fertilizer band. The a-value decreased by 5.1%-point recovery cm–1, T0.5a increased by 0.5 day cm–1 and the MaxRate decreased by 0.3%-point recovery day–1 cm–1. Placement of the fertilizer band centred between two crop rows caused an even access to the applied nitrogen, but a parallel displacement from the centre by a few centimetres significantly affected the parameters. The proliferation of the roots in the soil and thus the time until the roots reached the fertilizer zone is assumed to cause the inter-row competition for the band-injected N source. The access to the fertilizer band was clearly reflected in the dry matter production causing an uneven crop stand. The consequences of inter-row crop competition for a band-injected N source with respect to grain yield and grain quality were not explored, but attention on these parameters are required, particularly in the production of high quality wheat grains.  相似文献

Plant growth, mycorrhizal development and vesicular arbuscular spore production were examined in five tropical crop host species inoculated with Glomus clarum and grown in a glasshouse. In one of the two experiments, sequential harvests of maize, sorghum and chickpea were made in order to study spore production in relation to plant growth and mycorrhizal development. Spore numbers in each of these hosts increased at a fairly constant rate until maximum plant dry weight, when spore production ceased. Sorghum and maize produced considerably more spores than chickpea, with spore numbers being closely correlated with mycorrhizal root length. In the second experiment, Glomus clarum was cultured on each of maize, millet, sorghum, groundnut and chickpea for three consecutive generations before cross-inoculation of the spores from each host onto all five hosts. Sporulation with respect to host size was generally greatest when the inoculum used to infect a host had been produced on that host. The growth-promoting effects of the fungus were not influenced by the source of the inoculum. More spores were produced on the cereals than the legumes. Differences in spore numbers amongst hosts and plant generations were apparently influenced mainly by infected root length and by the growth period.  相似文献

Simmondsia chinensis (Link) Schneider, a multipurpose and monogeneric dioecious shrub from arid zones, has emerged as a cash crop all over the globe. Its seed propagation poses severe problems due to its male-biased population: the male:female ratio is 5:1. Investigations have been carried out to generate a sex-specific Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) marker for the early detection of male and female plants. Of the 42 primers analysed with a bulk sample of pooled male DNA and a bulk sample of pooled female DNA, only one primer, UBC-807, produced a unique ~1,200 base-pair fragment in the male DNA. To validate this observation, this primer was re-tested with individual male and female samples from eight cultivars. A similar unique ~1,200 bp fragment was present in the male individuals of all eight cultivars and completely absent in the female individuals tested. This is the first report of the use of ISSR markers to ascertain sex in physiologically mature S. chinensis plants.  相似文献

Essential oils, synthesized and stored in leaf glandular trichomes, of the Mentha species are valuated commercially as additives for food products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Mint production and oil yield is attenuated by both biotic and abiotic stresses. Consequently, there is need for development of cultivars with pest resistance and stable oil quality. Most mint cultivars are natural hybrids vegetatively propagated. Their sterility impairs the success of conventional breeding and to date, the application of irradiation mutation techniques have not resulted in the release of new commercially acceptable cultivars for widespread use. The paper summarizes the state of mint biotechnology by discussing advancements related to in vitro culture and genetic transformation, generation of herbicide resistant plants, and strategies for enhancing disease resistance and essential oil biosynthesis. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
