We present a phytogeographical comparison between polar (Arctic and Antarctic) and non-polar strains of the cyanobacterial genus Phormidium, which plays a key role in Arctic and Antarctic ecosystems as primary producer. A total of 26 Phormidium strains were studied using a polyphasic approach, 18 from Arctic (Svalbard, Ellesmere Island and Scandinavian Arctic—Abisko) and Antarctic (Antarctic Peninsula—King George and James Ross Island) regions, and 8 from temperate sites (mostly situated in Central Europe). A phylogenetic tree was constructed and compared with similar 16S rRNA sequences retrieved from Genbank. Within the Phormidium autumnale cluster, genetic similarity of 16S rDNA was more related to geographical proximity of strain origin than to morphological similarity. No genetic identity of Phormidium strains from north and south polar regions was found. The cluster Phormidium autumnale apparently belongs to generic entities in which geographical limitation plays a prominent role. However, the cyanobacterial strains found in Europe suggest that the distribution areas of some Phormidium cyanobacteria overlap. The Phormidium autumnale cluster is evidently a very characteristic type and represents an isolated clade within the traditional genus Phormidium. According to morphological features and the structure of trichomes, it is most similar and thus probably belongs to the genus Microcoleus.  相似文献

Freshwater filamentous green algae with branched thalli are almost unknown from the Antarctic region. They have rarely been recorded from maritime Antarctica and from sub-Antarctic Islands with rich phanerogamic vegetation. In the genus Hazenia, only one unidentified species was reported from several subaerial sites on Signy Island in 1979. However, unique populations of this genus were recently found in the stony littoral zone of two stable shallow lakes in the northern deglaciated region of James Ross Island (NE Antarctic Peninsula). These populations have a specialized ecology; they participate in the microvegetation on the flattened surfaces of stones in the littoral zones of lakes. The dominant green filamentous and richly branched alga from these communities was transferred to monospecific culture and studied in detail. Molecular sequence data (18S ribosomal DNA and the internal transcribed spacer) indicate that it belongs to the genus Hazenia (Bold in Am J Bot 45:737–743, 1958). Based on distinct molecular, morphological, and ecological characters, this alga was described as a new species (Hazenia broadyi spec. nova). A review of the genus Hazenia, based on molecular phylogenetic analyses of available strains, was also performed.  相似文献

Morphological variation of trichomes, heterocytes and akinetes in four species classified into the nostocalean genera Aphanizomenon Morren ex Bornet et Flahault or Anabaena Bory (Cyanophyta/Cyanobacteria) was studied from natural samples by LM and illustrated by drawings and micrographs. All investigated species, Aphanizomenon gracile (Lemmerm.) Lemmerm., A. aphanizomenoides (Forti) Komárek et Horecká, Anabaena bergii Ostenfeld, A. minderi Huber-Pestalozzi, occur in the plankton as solitary trichomes, similar to many representatives of the genus Anabaena. Main generic diagnostic characters of Aphanizomenon and Anabaena are discussed.  相似文献

During recent cruises aboard RV Polarstern in the Antarctic Peninsula region, a new species of benthic octopodid was discovered whose generic affinities based on morphological characteristics were uncertain. Molecular sequence analysis of six mitochondrial and nuclear genes allows this species to be placed with confidence within the genus Pareledone. The species is described herein and morphological diagnostic characters are provided for its identification.  相似文献

 Morphological differences among three color morphotypes occurring almost sympatrically (A, reddish type; B, blackish type; C, brownish type) of Sebastes inermis are clarified. Twenty-six morphometric characters and seven meristic characters were examined on about 20 specimens of each morphotype, 15 of the morphometric characters differing significantly. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the morphometric characters showed morphotype C to differ from the other two morphotypes. Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) of the morphometric characters showed clear separation of each morphotype. Four meristic characters also differed significantly. Modes of pectoral fin ray counts of morphotypes A, B, and C were 15, 16, and 17, respectively, and the modes of anal fin ray counts of morphotypes B and C were 7 and 8, respectively. Many individuals of morphotype A had seven or eight anal fin rays. These differences suggested that the three morphotypes may be reproductively isolated from each other. Euryhaline halophiles grow over a wide range of salinity, from <3% NaCl (seawater equivalent) to >15% NaCl and even saturation level (about 30% NaCl). Several species of euryhaline halophiles occur worldwide, especially in marine environments and also in aquatic and terrestrial habitats of the Antarctic ice-free areas. A biogeographic view of Antarctic halophiles is that their migration among lakes on land is more difficult than in marine setting. Ponds and lakes on land may thus serve as “islands” which facilitate the selection and separation of unique species. We isolated euryhaline halophiles from the saline lake, Suribati Ike, near Syowa Station and placed them into seven groups, each demonstrating a clear depth-related distribution. Six of the seven groups probably represent new species of the genera Halomonas and Marinobacter. This result suggests that Antarctic saline lakes exhibit high selectivity of unique euryhaline halophiles and possibly of other microbial groups.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Natural populations of a Rivularia-like cyanobacterium were collected from the carbonate deposits of the temporarily flooded littoral zone of a hypersaline, high elevation lake, The Laguna Negra, Andes, Argentina. Subsequently, the cyanobacterial strain PUNA-NP3, named after its origin (Puna Volcanic Plateau) was isolated from these Rivularia-like rounded, pillow-like, black microbial mats. None of the previously described species of the genus Rivularia occupy inland, hypersaline aquatic environments. After morphological examination of this strain, we found clear morphological autapomorphies, such as mucilaginous pads at the bases of the young trichomes, wide trichomes and filaments, and uniquely branched trichomes. Furthermore, based on results from 16S rRNA phylogeny and analysis of the 16S-23S ITS region, PUNA-NP3 was found to be an independent lineage of the evolutionary tree. Based on the combination of ecological, morphological and molecular evidence, we name strain PUNA-NP3 Rivularia halophila sp. nov. a new species under requirements of the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants.  相似文献

Invertebrate zooplankton predators are generally less diverse in average species numbers in tropical than in temperate lakes and reservoirs. Predatory Copepoda which comprise the majority of limnetic predators are particularly low in species numbers in the tropics. Predatory Cladocera are confined to the North Temperate zone. Chaoborus appears to be cosmopolitan. Among Rotifera, only the cosmopolitan predator Asplanchna occurs in tropical waters while the other common limnetic carnivorous genus Ploesoma is restricted to higher latitudes. Hydracarina, and insects besides Chaoborus, are generally restricted to the littoral and appear to be more diverse in the tropics. Lakes Awasa and Zwai, Ethiopia, are almost devoid of predators in the limnetic, which is invaded by a littoral chydorid Alona diaphana. Low diversity of lake types and low production of tropical zooplankton could restrict predator diversity too. Very low diversity of invertebrate predators in the limnetic and higher diversity in the littoral may characterize tropical lakes in contrast to temperate lakes, which have more invertebrate predators in the limnetic and perhaps relatively less in the littoral. Tropical zooplankton in freshwaters, appears to be a very immature community. Hence opportunistic species can readily invade the limnetic and even dominate in isolated situations as has been shown for Alona davidi, Hydracarina and some other unconventional forms.  相似文献

This work describes the leaf anatomy of 16 species belonging to three genera of the Malpighiaceae family found in the Cerrado (Minas Gerais State, Brazil). The scope of this study was to support the generic delimitation by contributing to the identification of the species and constructing a dichotomous identification key that includes anatomical characters. The taxonomic characters that were considered to be the most important and used in the identification key for the studied Malpighiaceae species were as follows: the presence and location of glands; presence of phloem in the medullary region of the midrib; mesophyll type; presence and type of trichomes; and presence, quantity, and disposition of accessory bundles in the petiole. It was also possible to indicate promising characters for future taxonomic and phylogenetic studies in the Malpighiaceae family, especially for the Banisteriopsis, Byrsonima, and Heteropterys genera.  相似文献

Despite a number of recent molecular phylogenetic studies on Phlomoides, in terms of trichome morphology the genus is still among the most poorly studied taxa in the family Lamiaceae. In order to test the utility of trichome characters for delimitation of sections, subsection and species of Phlomoides, we examined trichomes of 64 species representing all recognized sections and subsections using stereomicroscopy and scaning electron microscopy. Two basic types of trichomes could be identified: non‐glandular and glandular. Both trichome types can be simple or branched. The glandular trichomes were sessile, short stalked or long stalked. Different kinds of branched trichomes were observed in most species of P. sect. Phlomoides, i.e. symmetrically stellate, stellate with a central long branch, bi‐ or trifurcate. The species of P. sect. Filipendula were mostly covered by simple trichomes. Moreover, variation in trichome characters appears to have particular value, not only for the classification at sectional or subsectional rank, but also for delimitation of species within each section. For example, all studied species of P. subsect. Fulgentes are characterized by various kinds of stellate trichomes, while the trichome variability in P. subsect. Tetragonae was sufficiently high for species discrimination. An ancestral character state reconstruction was performed in order to investigate the evolution of trichome types and it revealed the following evolutionary trends in trichome characters of Phlomoides: 1) branched trichomes are primitive in Phlomoides as compared to simple ones, 2) long simple non‐glandular trichomes are derived as compared to short simple ones and 3) the presence of stalked glandular trichomes is advanced as compared to subsessile or sessile ones.  相似文献

Ninety‐two strains of Microcoleus vaginatus (=nomenclatural‐type species of the genus Microcoleus Desmazières ex Gomont) and Phormidium autumnale Trevisan ex Gomont from a wide diversity of regions and biotopes were examined using a combination of morphological and molecular methods. Phylogenies based on the 16S rDNA and 16S‐23S ITS (partial) demonstrated that the 92 strains, together with a number of strains in GenBank, were members of a highly supported monophyletic clade of strains (Bayesian posterior probability = 1.0) distant from the species‐cluster containing the generitype of Phormidium. Similarity of the 16S rRNA gene exceeded 95.5% among all members of the Microcoleus clade, but was less than 95% between any Microcoleus strains and species outside of the clade (e.g., Phormidium sensu stricto). These findings, which are in agreement with earlier studies on these taxa, necessitate the revision of Microcoleus to include P. autumnale. Furthermore, the cluster of Phormidium species in the P. autumnale group (known as Group VII) must be moved into Microcoleus as well, and these nomenclatural transfers are included in this study. The main diacritical characters defining Microcoleus are related to the cytomorphology of trichomes, including: narrowed trichome ends, calyptra, cells shorter than wide up to more or less isodiametric, and facultative presence of sheaths. The majority of species are 4–10 μm in diameter. The possession of multiple trichomes in a common sheath is present facultatively in many but not all species.  相似文献

The fish community in the littoral areas of eight regulated lakes and five reference lakes in Finland was sampled by electrofishing. No significant effect of winter drawdown on species richness was recorded across lakes. Total fish density for stony bottoms of the regulated and reference lakes averaged 19.3 and 32.7 individuals per 100 m2, respectively, but this difference was not statistically significant. The combined proportion of littoral fish species, including minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus), bullhead (Cottus gobio), alpine bullhead (Cottus poecilopus), nine-spined stickleback (Pungitius pungitius), and stone loach (Barbatula barbatula), supplemented with zoobenthos feeders ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus) and young burbot (Lota lota), was much lower in the regulated lakes than in the reference lakes. We have investigated the trichome characteristics in representative species of Salvia and Pleudia in order to evaluate this source of morphological evidence for addressing problems regarding generic delimitation and subgeneric classification. Trichomes of 46 Salvia spp., representing three subgenera in Iran, were investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. General trichome characteristics were constant among different populations of a certain species, but showed a degree of variability useful in the delimitation of taxa, specifically at lower taxonomic levels. Trichome characters of taxonomic interest are as follows: types of glandular hair; number of composing cells (uni‐, bi‐ or multicellular); size and thickness; branching pattern; and presence of papillae on the surface. Non‐glandular trichomes can be simple and branched. Glandular trichomes can be stalked, subsessile or sessile. Our investigation reveals the usefulness of such characters in providing fundamental taxonomic criteria for taxon delimitation in these genera at various levels, especially at the specific rank. 利用光学显微镜和扫描电子显微镜,观察了新疆委陵菜属5组不同花柱组10种4变种植物叶表皮的微形态特征,测量统计叶表皮毛的类型、表皮细胞的形状及大小、气孔器的分布及类型、气孔的形状、大小、密度及指数、气孔外拱盖形态及其纹饰等指标。结果显示:新疆委陵菜属10种4变种植物叶的下表皮均有气孔器的分布,形状为长椭圆形、椭圆形、宽椭圆形和近圆形;气孔器的类型多为无规则四细胞型、无规则型、围绕型和辐射型;表皮毛的类型为针状毛、带状柔毛和腺毛;表皮细胞的形状分为不规则形和多边形2种类型。研究表明,新疆委陵菜属植物表皮毛特征、叶片表皮细胞的形状、垂周壁式样、气孔器的形状类型、气孔密度指数及外围蜡质纹饰等存在差异,对属以下等级的划分有重要价值,可作为物种分类及鉴别的依据,同时也为本属一些分类群间的系统关系的探讨提供佐证。  相似文献

The Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna (Strebel 1908) presents two ecotypes (littoral and sublittoral) differing in morphological and behavioral characteristics and more recently discovered, in physiological traits and genetic population structure. Previous works, based on traditional morphometry, used only three measurements (length, width and height of the shell) and their relationships. However, this methodology could not describe in detail the shape of the morphotypes. In the present work, Elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA) of shells was used to study the shape of the two morphotypes in six localities along the Antarctic Peninsula. The use of EFA confirmed the morphometric differences. The littoral morphotype has higher and globose shells with the apex displaced to the anterior part; the sublittoral individuals are more flat and pointed, and have the apex very well defined. Low allometric effect was detected in SL individuals, whereas L specimens did not show an allometric relationship within the examined size range. Differences in shell shape among localities were recorded. EFA analysis reflected the overall shell shape and allowed to characterize the main differences in shell shape between ecotypes that were difficult to quantify using the standard morphometric approach.  相似文献

A multivariate analysis has been performed in order to study the polymorphisms of the three species ofPotentilla sect.Recta (Th. Wolf)Juzepchuk represented in the Iberian Peninsula:P. asturica Rothm.,P. hirta L. andP. recta L. The variability of 20 characters (quantitative, binary and qualitative) has been evaluated in 76 collections mostly from the Iberian Peninsula and from other European territories, but also from North America, and North Africa. The analyses performed provide support for the recognition of the three species. The most discriminant among the quantitative characters is the width of the long trichomes on the stem, and then the width of the long trichomes on the leaves and the maximum length of the long trichomes. The interval of number of carpels, presence or absence of short eglandular trichomes and the abundance of long eglandular trichomes (>3 mm) are the most discriminant ones among the qualitative ones. The taxonomical position ofP. asturica, which has been previously subordinated as a subspecies within the other two taxa, is discussed. Our results support a good delimitation of this taxon which, on the basis of the morphological characters studied by us, seems to be morphologically more close toP. hirta than toP. recta, but differs significantly from both. Alona diaphana, a common littoral tropicopolitan cladoceran, occurs in the limnetic of two Ethiopian lakes in considerable numbers and over long periods of time. Our results are presented and the composition of limnetic and littoral zooplankton, in terms of previous records of such incursions, are discussed. The high persistent densities of A. diaphana are due to the extensive littoral areas in the lakes, where it originates, the high intrinsic rates of increase of this species, the low diversity of zooplankton, reducing competition and the low level of predation.  相似文献

Summary Trichomes of Tremandra R.Br. ex DC., Platytheca Steetz and Tetratheca Sm. (Elaeocarpaceae, former Tremandraceae), together with two outgroup species of Elaeocarpus L., are illustrated using scanning electron microscopy, and their distribution on various plant organs is documented. Various trichomes types were identified that relate taxa: simple hairs, stellate hairs, short glandular trichomes, long glandular trichomes, and three forms of tubercules. Both outgroup and ingroup taxa have simple hairs. Stellate hairs are confirmed as unique to Tremandra. Prominent and sculptured multicelled tubercules, some bearing a stout hair, are characteristic of Platytheca. Smaller multicelled tubercules occur in both Platytheca and Tetratheca, except for the Western Australian taxon Te. filiformis Benth. (possibly plesiomorphic). Unicellular tubercules (papilla) characterise two species of Tetratheca. Short glandular trichomes, usually found on the ovary, also occur in both of these genera but not in all species (possibly secondary losses), while long glandular trichomes, usually on stems and leaves, occur only in some groups of Tetratheca. Within Tetratheca, Western Australian taxa that have five-merous flowers fall into three ‘groups’: seven species (together with one from South Australia) that have short glandular trichomes but no long glandular trichomes; six species that have long glandular trichomes but no short glandular trichomes; and four species that have both trichome types. All other species of Tetratheca have four-merous flowers and form two ‘groups’: 12 eastern species (including one from South Australia) that have both short glandular trichomes and long glandular trichomes; 4 western species and six eastern species that lack short glandular trichomes. On the basis of these characters, a phylogenetic hypothesis for the three genera is presented.  相似文献
