In this activity, students learn about the important topic of invasive species, specifically Zebra Mussels. Students role-play different characters in a real-life situation: the trial of the Zebra Mussel for unlawful disruption of the Great Lakes ecosystem. Students will also learn about jurisprudential inquiry by examining the trial process. The swash-ice zone of the Curonian Lagoon comprises the depths from a lower margin of the supralittoral to a lower margin of the swash subzone (0.7 m). This zone extends from a few meters to 250 m. This zone is the area of expatriation of Dreissena polymorpha because of its complete freezing in winter. However, this species prevails in the swash-ice zone in terms of the frequency of occurrence and the ratio in the total abundance and biomass of macrozoobenthos. Zebra mussels form large beds; their abundance and biomass reach 1420 ind./m2 and 74.334 g/m2, respectively. Population replenishment in this zone occurs sporadically due to adult individuals brought here from the consortium communities, where zebra mussel + Unionidae and zebra mussel + Viviparidae are the determining centers, as well as due to the settling of the mollusks of the veliconch stage.  相似文献

The brown algaFucus vesiculosus formamytili (Nienburg) Nienhuis covered about 70% of mussel bed (Mytilus edulis) surface area in the lower intertidal zone of Königshafen, a sheltered sandy bay near the island of Sylt in the North Sea. Mean biomass in dense patches was 584 g ash-free dry weight m?2 in summer. On experimental mussel beds, fucoid cover enhanced mud accumulation and decreased mussel density. The position of mussels underneath algal canopy was mainly endobenthic (87% of mussels with >1/3 of shell sunk into mud). In the absence of fucoids, mussels generated epibenthic garlands (81% of mussels with <1/3 of shell buried in mud). Mussel density underneath fucoid cover was 40 to 73% of mussel density without algae. On natural beds, barnacles (Balanidae), periwinkles (Littorina littorea) and crabs (particularly juveniles ofCarcinus maenas) were significantly less abundant in the presence of fucoids, presumably because most of the mussels were covered with sediment, whereas in the absence of fucoids, epibenthic mussel clumps provided substratum as well as interstitial hiding places. The endobenthic macrofauna showed little difference between covered and uncovered mussel beds. On the other hand, grazing herbivores — the flat periwinkleLittorina mariae, the isopodJaera albifrons and the amphipodsGammarus spp. — were more abundant at equivalent sites with fucoid cover. The patchy growth ofFucus vesiculosus on mussel beds in the intertidal Wadden Sea affects mussels and their epibionts negatively, but supports various herbivores and increases overall benthic diversity.  相似文献

1. Since zebra mussel invaded Lake Constance in the 1960s the number of wintering waterbirds increased fourfold. We studied the impact of predation by waterbirds (tufted duck Aythya fuligula, pochard Aythya ferina and coot Fulica atra) on the population of Dreissena polymorpha in winter 2001/2002. These three species, with monthly peak numbers of approximately 230 000 individuals, currently comprise up to 80% of the waterbird population wintering at Lake Constance. 2. Four different study sites and four depths, that represent typical and characteristic habitats of mussels in Upper Lake Constance, were chosen. 3. Zebra mussels were sampled before, during and after predation by waterbirds. Their biomass in shallow areas decreased by >90%; the biomass reduction in deeper areas was highly variable and dependent on the substratum. With one exception, no changes could be detected at the greatest depth (11 m). 4. Concurrent exclosure studies revealed that the decrease in zebra mussels was caused by waterbird predation. A GIS‐based approximation revealed that in an area of 1 km2 a total of approximately 750 t mussel fresh mass was removed by birds, which is equivalent to 1390 g mussels per bird per day. 5. Wintering waterbirds have a strong structural impact on the littoral community of Lake Constance and could be the key predator of zebra mussels.  相似文献

The increased use of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in consumer products raises the concern of environmental release and subsequent impacts in natural communities. We tested for physiological and demographic impacts of ZnO, a prevalent metal oxide ENP, on the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. We exposed mussels of two size classes, <4.5 and ≥4.5 cm shell length, to 0.1–2 mg l−1 ZnO ENPs in seawater for 12 wk, and measured the effect on mussel respiration, accumulation of Zn, growth, and survival. After 12 wk of exposure to ZnO ENPs, respiration rates of mussels increased with ZnO concentration. Mussels had up to three fold more Zn in tissues than control groups after 12 wk of exposure, but patterns of Zn accumulation varied with mussel size and Zn concentrations. Small mussels accumulated Zn 10 times faster than large mussels at 0.5 mg l−1, while large mussels accumulated Zn four times faster than small mussels at 2 mg l−1. Mussels exposed to 2 mg l−1 ZnO grew 40% less than mussels in our control group for both size classes. Survival significantly decreased only in groups exposed to the highest ZnO concentration (2 mg l−1) and was lower for small mussels than large. Our results indicate that ZnO ENPs are toxic to mussels but at levels unlikely to be reached in natural marine waters.  相似文献

Since 1950, two large-scale changes have taken place in the western Dutch Wadden Sea, namely the eutrophication of the area and the introduction of an extensive mussel culture. Although eutrophication in the fresh waters started already around 1950, nutrient concentrations in the western Wadden Sea remained fairly constant until about 1970, due to the retention of nutrients in Lake IJssel, the main source. From 1970–1980 concentrations increased strongly, and during the last years the situation has stabilized. Mussel culture was introduced in 1950 and expanded during the next decade to an area of 70 km2, all situated in the sublittoral area. From 1960 the area of mussel culture remained about constant with fluctuating yields of between 35 and 120 millions of kg fresh weight. Due to a lack of data for the period until 1970 the impact of eutrophication and mussel culture on the ecosystem cannot be assessed. From 1970 onwards an increased biomass and production of the macrofauna in the intertidal zone has been observed, which is attributed to eutrophication. The hypothesis is postulated that the introduction of mussel culture between 1950 and 1960 has resulted in an increased food competition in the area, leading to a decreased stock of the macrofauna in the intertidal. Eutrophication from about 1970 onwards has improved the food conditions and as a result both the macrofauna in the intertidal and the mussel in the sublittoral area would have increased in biomass, allowing higher maximum yields of the mussel culture. The importance of monitoring programs is stressed to follow these trends in the near future and to check the above hypothesis in areas where it is decided to introduce or intensify mussel culture. This study examined the effects of a freshwater filter feeding bivalve (Corbicula leana Prime) and large zooplankton (>200 μm, mostly cladocerans and copepods) on the phytoplankton communities in two lakes with contrasting trophic conditions. A controlled experiment was conducted with four treatments (control, zooplankton addition, mussel addition, and both zooplankton and mussel addition), and each established in duplicate 10-l chambers. In both lakes there were significant effects of mussel grazing on phytoplankton density and biomass. The effects were greater in mesotrophic Lake Soyang than in hypertrophic Lake Ilgam. Effects of zooplankton grazing did not differ between these lakes, and zooplankton effects on phytoplankton were much less than the effects of mussels. Although mussels exerted a varying effect on phytoplankton according to their size, mussels reduced densities of almost all phytoplankton taxa. Total mean filtering rate (FR) of mussels in Lake Soyang was significantly greater than that in Lake Ilgam (p=0.002, n=5). Carbon fluxes from phytoplankton to mussels (977–2,379 μgC l?1d?1) and to zooplankton (76–264 μgC l?1 d?1) were always greater in Lake Ilgam due to the greater phytoplankton biomass (p<0.01, n=6). Based on the C-flux to biomass ratios, the mussels consumed 170–754% (avg. 412%) of phytoplankton standing stock in Lake Soyang, and 38–164% (avg. 106%) in Lake Ilgam per day. The C-flux to biomass ratio for mussels within each lake was much greater than for large zooplankton. Mussels reduced total phosphorus concentration by 5–34%, while increasing phosphate by 30–55% relative to the control. Total nitrogen also was reduced (by 9–25%), but there was no noticeable change in nitrate among treatments. The high consumption rate of phytoplankton by Corbicula leana even in a very eutrophic lake suggests that this mussel could affect planktonic and benthic food web structure and function by preferential feeding on small seston and by nutrient recycling. Control of mussel biomass therefore might be an effective tool for management of water quality in shallow eutrophic lakes and reservoirs in Korea.  相似文献

Fluxes of oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorus were determined in two areas of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, at a site influenced by the farming of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and a control site. Mussel farming induced intense biodeposition of organic matter to the underlying sediments, which stimulated sediment oxygen demand, and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus regeneration rates compared to the nearby control station. Overall benthic fluxes (–11.4 ± 6.5 mmol O2 m−2 h−1; 1.59 ± 0.47 mmol NH4+ m−2 h−1 and 94 ± 42 μmol PO43− m−2 h−1) at the mussel farm are amongst the highest ever recorded for an aquaculture impacted area and question the belief that farming of filter-feeding bivalves has inherently lower impacts than finfish farming. In situ incubations of intact mussel ropes demonstrated that the mussel rope community was an enormous sink for oxygen and particulate organic matter, and an equally large source of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate to the water column. Overall, a one meter square area of␣mussel farm (mussel ropes and underlying sediment) was estimated to have an oxygen demand of 46.8 mmol m2 h−1 and to regenerate inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus at rates of 8.5 and 0.3 mmol m2 h−1, with the mussel ropes accounting for between 70 and more than 90% of the overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Even taking into account that within the farmed area of the Sacca di Goro lagoon, there are 15–20 m−2 of open water for each one covered with mussel ropes, the mussel ropes would account for a large and often dominant part of overall oxygen and nutrient fluxes. These results demonstrate that it is essential to take into account the activity of the cultivated organisms and their epiphytic community when assessing the impacts of shellfish farming. Overall, whilst grazing by the mussel rope community could act as a top-down control on the phytoplankton, most of the ingested organic matter is rapidly recycled to the water column as inorganic nutrients, which would be expected to stimulate phytoplankton growth. Consequently, the net effect of the mussel farming on phytoplankton dynamics, may be to increase phytoplankton turnover and overall production, rather than to limit phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

The present investigation was performed on zebra mussels, Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas), which were sampled from the Kleines Haff. As a part of the Oder estuary, the Kleines Haff acts as a sink for the load of the river Oder. Mussel shells and mussel tissue were analyzed for their content of selected heavy metals, based on the composition of the suspended matter. Mussels were sampled in May, July, August and September 1996 at different locations and divided into three groups regarding their body size. The data show that concentrations of lead, cadmium and mercury vary during the year. Mussel shells and mussel tissue showed seasonal and local differences in heavy-metal concentration. Between the size classes, however, there was no significant difference, with one exception: the lead content in tissues was significantly higher in large mussels (>2.5 cm shell length) than in small ones (<1.9 cm). The concentrations of lead and cadmium clearly decreased in mussel shells from May to September, while they increased in mussel tissues. The lead concentration in the tissue corresponded to that of mercury. The highest values measured for mercury were 218 μg/kg dry weight (DW), for cadmium 1030 μg/kg DW and for lead 6182 μg/kg DW. The average concentration of heavy metals in mussel tissue was 9 to nearly 170 times lower than in the surrounding sediment and seston. It can be assumed that a balance exists between the concentration of heavy metals in the mussels' food and the mussels themselves.  相似文献

Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) seasonal colonization patterns, growth and habitat preferences were determined in a sub-tropical floodplain river at the southern edge of its distribution in North America during 1995–96 (Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana). Zebra mussel movement into subtropical areas represents a major frontier for this species worldwide. The onset of adult zebra mussel colonies occurred when the minimum daily temperature dropped below 31 °C and dissolved oxygen levels rose above 6.5 mg l-1 in the fall. By mid-winter, mussel populations were established at lateral distances >10 km from the main river channel. Mussel growth occurred throughout the winter with an increase in growth in April and May. Adult mortality occurred during May–August as dissolved oxygen levels declined and minimum daily temperature warmed above 29 °C in the floodplain and 32.5 °C in riverine sites. Limiting factors responsible for the seasonal pattern include temperature and dissolved oxygen tolerances experienced during summer months in the ARB. Summer water conditions apparently preclude establishment of resident zebra mussel populations in the Atchafalaya floodplain. Naturally occurring seasonal patterns in temperature and dissolved oxygen in floodplain rivers may have implications for the expansion of this exotic mollusk in warmwater systems with source colonies restricted to mainstem rivers and seasonal sinks in floodplain regions. The Rías Baixas are four flooded tectonic valleys located on the northwest Iberian Peninsula that support a mussel production of about 250 × 106 kg y–1 from 3337 mussel rafts. Mussel production in this region is the highest in Europe and one of the most intensive in the world, giving employment to 9000 people directly and 20000 indirectly. The causes of this high mussel production are discussed through the analysis of published and some unpublished information. The interaction between coastal upwelling and the circulation patterns in the Rías, which channel the 3-dimensional variability of the open ocean into a 2-dimensional system, promotes a massive response in the productivity of phytoplankton populations inside the Rías, even during weak upwelling events along the coast. Coastal upwelling in the area typically occurs between March–April and September–October. The mean value of gross primary production during the whole upwelling season is 1.4 g C m–2 d–1, although high sporadic values of 4 g C m–2 d–1 may occur during upwelling relaxation events, when phytoplankton export to the coastal shelf is restricted. Mussel growth occurs mainly during the upwelling season. It is estimated that mussel harvest extracts 10% of the primary production. The phytoplankton response to upwelling provides food of high quality (f 0.5) that determines high absorption efficiency (0.6), whereas the characteristics of the Rías maintains the seston concentration at levels (0.5 – 1.3 mg TPM l–1 and <5 mg Chl a m–3) below the threshold of pseudo-faeces production. The physiological behaviour of mussels indicates that the high yield of mussel culture in the Rías of Galicia is a consequence of the particular characteristics of the seston.  相似文献

Haminoea japonica is a species of opisthobranch sea slug native to Japan and Korea. Non-native populations have spread unnoticed for decades due to difficulties in the taxonomy of Haminoea species. Haminoea japonica is associated with a schistosome parasite in San Francisco Bay, thus further spread could have consequence to human health and economies. Anecdotal evidence suggests that H. japonica has displaced native species of Haminoea in North America and Europe, becoming locally dominant in estuaries and coastal lagoons. In this paper we study the population genetics of native and non-native populations of H. japonica based on mt-DNA data including newly discovered populations in Italy and France. The conclusions of this study further corroborate a Northeastern Japan origin for the non-native populations and suggest possible independent introductions into North America and Europe. Additionally, the data obtained revealed possible secondary introductions within Japan. Although non-native populations have experienced severe genetic bottlenecks they have colonized different regions with a broad range of water temperatures and other environmental conditions. The environmental tolerance of this species, along with its ability to become dominant in invaded areas and its association with a schistosome parasite, suggest H. japonica could be a dangerous invasive species.  相似文献

Phytoplankton biomass and primary production rates within semi-enclosed reef lagoons of the central Great Barrier Reef were compared with adjacent shelf waters. Chlorophyll concentrations and surface primary production rates were usually higher in lagoons although seasonal differences were only significant during the summer. Nitrate concentrations were higher in lagoons than in shelf waters year-round. Nano- (<20 m size fraction) or pico-phytoplankton (<2 m size fraction) dominated phytoplankton biomass and production within reef lagoons throughout the year. Net phytoplankton (>10–20 m size fraction), however, were relatively more important in both reef lagoons and open shelf waters during the summer. Biomass-specific production within lagoons (range 41–90 mg C mg chl–1 day–1) was high, regardless of season. Lagoonal phytoplankton production (range 0.2–1.6 g C m–2 day–1) was directly correlated with standing crop and inversely related to lagoon flushing rates. Phytoplankton blooms develop within GBR reef lagoons during intermittent calm periods when water residence times exceed phytoplankton generation times.  相似文献

In European streams and rivers, the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera L., 1758) faces extinction. This is also true for the Waldaist River, with 20,000 specimens recorded in the early 1990s then Austria’s most important pearl mussel river. Nowadays, there is only a single 320 m stretch with noteworthy mussel densities. During an in-depth survey of this river stretch in 2010, we detected a total of 2,774 specimens. Mussel microhabitats were confined to patches of sand and fine gravel (psammal and akal) at run sections of the river, stabilized by large boulders. Pearl mussels avoided large accumulations of fine sediments. Typically situated at undercut slopes, preferred microhabitats were 0.25–0.50 m deep at baseflow with current velocities (at 40% depth) of 0.2–0.6 m s?1. A comparison of the present stock with data from 1997 revealed a rapid decline in mussel density down to 27%. We also noticed strongly reduced growth and a high mortality of medium age classes. Juvenile mussels were completely lacking. With respect to host specificity in terms of glochidia survival, the brook char Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill, 1814), a suitable host in North America, shed glochidia within eight days. In the brown trout Salmo trutta L., 1758, two strains were investigated. Glochidia survival, growth and prevalence were significantly higher in the Danish than in the Austrian hatchery strain.  相似文献

Consumer stress models of ecological theory predict that predators are more susceptible to stress than their prey. Intertidal mussels, Mytilus californianus, span a vertical stress gradient from the low zone (lower stress) to the high zone (higher thermal and desiccation stress), while their sea star predators, Pisaster ochraceus, range from the low zone only into the lower edge of the mussel zone. In summer 2003, we tested the responses of sea stars and mussels to environmental stress in an experiment conducted on the Oregon coast. Mussels were transplanted from the middle of the mussel bed to cages in the low and high edges of the mussel bed. Sea star predators were added to half of the mussel cages. Mussels and sea stars were sampled between June and August for indicators of sublethal stress. Mussel growth was measured, and tissues were collected for heat shock protein (Hsp70) analyses and histological analyses of reproduction. Sea stars were weighed, and tissues were sampled for Hsp70 analyses. Mussels in high-edge cages had higher levels of total Hsp70 and exhibited spawning activity earlier in the summer than mussels in the low-edge cages. Sea stars suffered high mortality in the high edge, and low-edge sea stars lost weight but showed no differences in Hsp70 production. These results suggest that stress in the intertidal zone affected the mobile predator more than its sessile prey, which is consistent with predictions of consumer stress models. Whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, are known to aggregate to feed in a small number of locations in tropical and subtropical waters. Here we document a newly discovered major aggregation site for whale sharks within the Al Shaheen oil field, 90 km off the coast of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf. Whale sharks were observed between April and September, with peak numbers observed between May and August. Density estimates of up to 100 sharks within an area of 1 km2 were recorded. Sharks ranged between four and eight metres’ estimated total length (mean 6.92±1.53 m). Most animals observed were actively feeding on surface zooplankton, consisting primarily of mackerel tuna, Euthynnus affinis, eggs.  相似文献

Since its appearance in 2006 in a freshwater section of the Rhine–Meuse estuary (Hollandsch Diep, The Netherlands), the non-indigenous quagga mussel has displayed a rapid range expansion in Western Europe. However, an overview characterising the spread and impacts of the quagga mussel in this area is currently lacking. A literature study, supplemented with field data, was performed to gather all available data and information relating to quagga mussel dispersal. Dispersal characteristics were analysed for rate and direction and in relation to hydrological connectivity and dispersal vectors. To determine ranges of conditions suitable for quagga mussel colonisation, physico-chemical characteristics of their habitats were analysed. After its initial arrival in the freshwater section of the Rhine-Meuse estuary and River Danube, the quagga mussel demonstrated a rapid and continued range expansion in Western Europe. Quagga mussels have extended their non-native range to the network of major waterways in The Netherlands and in an upstream direction in the River Rhine (Germany), its tributaries (rivers Main and Moselle) and the River Meuse (Belgium and France). The calculated average quagga mussel dispersal rate in Europe was 120 km year?1 (range 23–383 km year?1). Hydrological connectivity is important in determining the speed with which colonisation occurs. Dispersal to water bodies disconnected from the freshwater network requires the presence of a suitable vector e.g. pleasure boats transferred over land. Upstream dispersal is primarily human mediated through the attachment of mussels to watercraft. The relative abundance of quagga mussel to zebra mussel has greatly increased in a number of areas sampled in the major Dutch rivers and lakes and the rivers Main and Rhine and the Rhine–Danube Canal leading to a dominance shift from zebra mussels to quagga mussels. However, evidence for displacement of the zebra mussel is limited due to the lack of temporal trends relating to the overall density of zebra and quagga mussel.  相似文献

Rationale and Experimental Approach

Aggregate dredging is a growing source of anthropogenic disturbance in coastal UK waters and has the potential to impact marine systems through the smothering of benthic fauna with organically loaded screening discards. This study investigates the tolerance of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis to such episodic smothering events using a multi-factorial design, including organic matter concentration, temperature, sediment fraction size and duration of burial as important predictor variables.

Results and Discussion

Mussel mortality was significantly higher in organically loaded burials when compared to control sediments after just 2 days. Particularly, M. edulis specimens under burial in fine sediment with high (1%) concentrations of organic matter experienced a significantly higher mortality rate (p<0.01) than those under coarse control aggregates. Additionally, mussels exposed to the summer maximum temperature treatment (20°C) exhibited significantly increased mortality (p<0.01) compared to those in the ambient treatment group (15°C). Total Oxygen Uptake rates of experimental aggregates were greatest (112.7 mmol m-2 day-1) with 1% organic loadings in coarse sediment at 20°C. Elevated oxygen flux rates in porous coarse sediments are likely to be a function of increased vertical migration of anaerobically liberated sulphides to the sediment-water interface. However, survival of M. edulis under bacterial mats of Beggiatoa spp. indicates the species’ resilience to sulphides and so we propose that the presence of reactive organic matter within the burial medium may facilitate bacterial growth and increase mortality through pathogenic infection. This may be exacerbated under the stable interstitial conditions in fine sediment and increased bacterial metabolism under high temperatures. Furthermore, increased temperature may impose metabolic demands upon the mussel that cannot be met during burial-induced anaerobiosis.

Summary

Lack of consideration for the role of organic matter and temperature during sedimentation events may lead to an overestimation of the tolerance of benthic species to smothering from dredged material.  相似文献

Stable isotopes derived from the claws of birds could be used to determine the migratory origins of birds if the time periods represented in excised sections of claws were known. We investigated new keratin growth in the claws of adult female Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) by estimating the equilibration rates of stable isotopes (δ 13C, δ 15N, and δ 2H) from the breeding grounds into 1 mm claw tips. We sampled birds on their breeding ground through time and found that it took approximately 3–3.5 months for isotope values in most claw tips to equilibrate to isotope values that reflected those present in the environment on their breeding grounds. Results from this study suggest that isotopes equilibrate slowly into claw tips of Lesser Scaup, suggesting isotopes could potentially be used to determine the wintering grounds of birds. We suggest using controlled feeding experiments or longitudinal field investigations to understand claw growth and isotopic equilibration in claw tips. Such information would be valuable in ascertaining whether claw tips can be used in future studies to identify the migratory origins of birds.  相似文献
