Olfactory cues play a prominent, yet underestimated role in shaping emotional attitudes towards conspecifics. Among humans olfactory cues can have effects on behavior. In a rating study (n = 290) females rated the smell of androstenone. The emotional reaction to androstenone changed during the menstrual cycle. Females rated the main component of male body odor unattractive. This changed to a neutral emotional response at the conceptive optimum around ovulation. The finding has direct consequences for hypotheses concerning the evolutionary loss of estrus. It is suggested that the cyclic-dependent emotional rating of androstenone may facilitate active female choice of sex partners and may be a proximate cue for female mate-choice.  相似文献

Previous research has demonstrated that participants are overconfident in the veracity of their odor identifications. This means that their confidence expressed as subjective probabilities is, on average, higher than the actual proportion of correct odor identifications. The current experiment tested the hypothesis that the more arousing an odor is, the more participants are overconfident in their identification of it. The results indicated that part of the overconfidence in odor identification can, indeed, be due to the arousing properties of the odors. This suggests that emotional variables should be taken into account when researching metamemory.  相似文献

People display facial reactions when exposed to others'' emotional expressions, but exactly what mechanism mediates these facial reactions remains a debated issue. In this study, we manipulated two critical perceptual features that contribute to determining the significance of others'' emotional expressions: the direction of attention (toward or away from the observer) and the intensity of the emotional display. Electromyographic activity over the corrugator muscle was recorded while participants observed videos of neutral to angry body expressions. Self-directed bodies induced greater corrugator activity than other-directed bodies; additionally corrugator activity was only influenced by the intensity of anger expresssed by self-directed bodies. These data support the hypothesis that rapid facial reactions are the outcome of self-relevant emotional processing.  相似文献

In the past decade, the identification of most genes involved in Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation (CDG) (type I) was achieved by a combination of biochemical, cell biological and glycobiological investigations. This has been truly successful for CDG-I, because the candidate genes could be selected on the basis of the homology of the synthetic pathway of the dolichol linked oligosaccharide in human and yeast. On the contrary, only a few CDG-II defects were elucidated, be it that some of the discoveries represent wonderful breakthroughs, like e.g, the identification of the COG defects. In general, many rare genetic defects have been identified by positional cloning. However, only a few types of CDG have effectively been elucidated by linkage analysis and so-called reverse genetics. The reason is that the families were relatively small and could—except for CDG-PMM2—not be pooled for analysis. Hence, a large number of CDG cases has long remained unsolved because the search for the culprit gene was very laborious, due to the heterogeneous phenotype and the myriad of candidate defects. This has changed when homozygosity mapping came of age, because it could be applied to small (consanguineous) families. Many novel CDG genes have been discovered in this way. But the best has yet to come: what we are currently witnessing, is an explosion of novel CDG defects, thanks to exome sequencing: seven novel types were published over a period of only two years. It is expected that exome sequencing will soon become a diagnostic tool, that will continuously uncover new facets of this fascinating group of diseases.  相似文献

Changes in body odor are known to be a consequence of many diseases. Much of the published work on disease-related and body odor changes has involved parasites and certain cancers. Much less studied have been viral diseases, possibly due to an absence of good animal model systems. Here we studied possible alteration of fecal odors in animals infected with avian influenza viruses (AIV). In a behavioral study, inbred C57BL/6 mice were trained in a standard Y-maze to discriminate odors emanating from feces collected from mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) infected with low-pathogenic avian influenza virus compared to fecal odors from non-infected controls. Mice could discriminate odors from non-infected compared to infected individual ducks on the basis of fecal odors when feces from post-infection periods were paired with feces from pre-infection periods. Prompted by this indication of odor change, fecal samples were subjected to dynamic headspace and solvent extraction analyses employing gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to identify chemical markers indicative of AIV infection. Chemical analyses indicated that AIV infection was associated with a marked increase of acetoin (3-hydroxy-2-butanone) in feces. These experiments demonstrate that information regarding viral infection exists via volatile metabolites present in feces. Further, they suggest that odor changes following virus infection could play a role in regulating behavior of conspecifics exposed to infected individuals.  相似文献

Rhagophthalmus ohbai Wittmer (Iriomote botaru, in Japanese) can be found in the soil environment on several islands in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The females of this species have been reported to remain in very close proximity to their eggs for about 2 months while producing a pungent odor. We hypothesized that females produced this odor in order to protect their eggs and/or themselves from pathogens and/or predators. Analysis of this volatile substance by solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS) revealed that the odor was attributed to 1,4-naphthoquinone (NQ). We also examined resistance to NQ in four fungi isolated from dead fireflies [Aspergillus tubingensis (Schober) Mosseray 21KI501, A. fumigatus Fresenius 21KI502, Fusarium proliferatum (Matsushima) Nirenberg 21KI503, and Trichoderma asperellum Samuels et al. 21KI504], as well as four common soil bacteria [Escherichia coli (Migula) Castellani and Chalmers type B, Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus Rosenbach H209P, Bacillus subtilis (Ehrenberg) Cohn ATCC6633, and Rhodococcus jostii Takeuchi et al. RHA1]. The findings revealed that NQ exhibited antimicrobial activity in all of the test organisms, suggesting that female fireflies release NQ to protect their eggs and newly hatched larvae from pathogens in the soil. We also analyzed the volatiles produced by male fireflies using GC–MS and found that some male fireflies emitted NQ. It is possible that male fireflies produce NQ to protect themselves from pathogenic microorganisms in the soil environments that they inhabit during the day. Although several defensive chemicals produced by fireflies have been identified to date, the production of 1,4-naphthoquinone for chemical defense by R. ohbai has not yet been reported.  相似文献

Odor context can affect the recognition of facial expressions. However, there is no evidence to date that odor can regulate the processing of emotional words conveyed by visual words. An emotional word recognition task was combined with event-related potential technology. Briefly, 49 adults were randomly divided into three odor contexts (pleasant odor, unpleasant odor, and no odor) to judge the valence of emotional words (positive, negative, and neutral). Both behavioral and Electroencephalography (EEG) data were collected. Both the pleasant odor and unpleasant odor contexts shortened the response time of the subjects to emotional words. In addition, negative words induced greater amplitudes of early posterior negativity (EPN) and late positive potential (LPP) than the positive and neutral words. However, the neutral words induced a larger N400 amplitude than the positive and negative words. More importantly, the processing of emotional words was found to be modulated by external odor contexts. For example, during the earlier (P2) processing stages, pleasant and unpleasant odor contexts induced greater P2 amplitudes than the no odor context. In the unpleasant odor context, negative words with the same odor valence induced greater P2 amplitudes than the positive words. During the later (N400) stages, various regions of the brain regions exhibited different results. For example, in the left and right frontal areas of the brain, exposure to positive words in a pleasant odor context resulted in a smaller N400 amplitude than exposure to neutral words in the same context. Meanwhile, in the left and right central regions, emotional words with the same valence as pleasant or unpleasant odor contexts elicited the minimum N400 amplitude. Individuals are very sensitive to emotional information. With deeper processing, different cognitive processes are reflected and they can be modulated by external odors. In the early and late stages of word processing, both pleasant and unpleasant odor contexts exhibited an undifferentiated dominance effect and could specifically modulate affectively congruent words.  相似文献

The effects of competitor pressure and prey odor on foraging behavior of the rock crab, Cancer irroratus (Say), were investigated. The Jonah crab, Cancer borealis (Stimpson), was chosen as the interspecific competitor because it shares resources with C. irroratus. Four treatments were tested for their effect on foraging: the presence or absence of a competitor and two types of prey odor; body odor (living mussel) and tissue extract (dead mussel tissue). The presence of Jonah crabs did not influence location time, search time, prey size selected, or handling time of the rock crabs. However, rock crabs responded differently to the presence of body odor and tissue extract cues. The presence of extract odor decreased the time to locate prey while increasing the number of prey manipulated and prey size selected. When prey body odor was present, rock crabs displayed less investigative behaviors than in the presence of extract odor, illustrated by reduced location time. Extract odor provided a stronger and more attractive cue than body odor, but increased prey manipulation and search time. Extract odor induced increases in manipulation and searching for prey but canceled out the benefits of decreased location time, resulting in crabs from both treatments displaying similar search times. These elevated behaviors may be associated with foraging for injured and cracked prey or may indicate an area of conspecific feeding.  相似文献

Body odors provide a rich source of sensory information for other animals. There is considerable evidence to suggest that short-term fluctuations in body odor can be caused by diet; however, few, if any, previous studies have demonstrated that specific compounds can directly mask or alter mouse urinary odor when ingested and thus alter another animal's behavior. To investigate whether the ingestion of citronellal, a monoterpene aldehyde that produces an intense aroma detected by both humans and mice, can alter mouse urinary odor, mice (C57BL6J) were trained in a Y maze to discriminate between the urinary odors of male donor mice that had ingested either citronellal in aqueous solution or a control solution. Trained mice could discriminate between urinary odors from the citronellal ingestion and control groups. A series of generalization tests revealed that citronellal ingestion directly altered mouse urinary odor. Moreover, trained mice that had successfully discriminated between urinary odors from donor mice of different ages failed to detect age-related changes in urine from male mice that had ingested 50 ppm of citronellal. This study is the first to show that ingestion of a xenobiotic can alter mouse urinary odor and confuse the behavioral responses of trained mice to age-related scents.  相似文献

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, is a serious pest of fruits and vegetables. Methyl eugenol (ME), a male attractant, is used to against this fly by mass trapping. Control effect may be influenced by learning, which could modify the olfactory response of the fly to this attractant. To collect the behavioral evidence, studies on the capability of this fly for olfactory learning are necessary. We investigated olfactory learning in male flies with a classical olfactory conditioning procedure using restrained individuals under laboratory conditions. The acquisition of the proboscis extension reflex was used as the criterion for conditioning. A high conditioned response level was found in oriental fruit flies when an odor was presented in paired association with a sucrose reward but not when the odor and sucrose were presented unpaired. We also found that the conditioning performance was influenced by the odor concentration, intertrial interval, and starvation time. A slight sensitization elicited by imbibing sucrose was observed. These results indicate that oriental fruit flies have a high capacity to form an olfactory memory as a result of classical conditioning.  相似文献

Forensic DNA evidence often contains mixtures of multiple contributors, or is present in low template amounts. The resulting data signals may appear to be relatively uninformative when interpreted using qualitative inclusion-based methods. However, these same data can yield greater identification information when interpreted by computer using quantitative data-modeling methods. This study applies both qualitative and quantitative interpretation methods to a well-characterized DNA mixture and dilution data set, and compares the inferred match information. The results show that qualitative interpretation loses identification power at low culprit DNA quantities (below 100 pg), but that quantitative methods produce useful information down into the 10 pg range. Thus there is a ten-fold information gap that separates the qualitative and quantitative DNA mixture interpretation approaches. With low quantities of culprit DNA (10 pg to 100 pg), computer-based quantitative interpretation provides greater match sensitivity.  相似文献

Human body odors have important communicative functions regarding genetic identity, immune fitness and general health, but an expanding body of research suggests they can also communicate information about an individual’s emotional state. In the current study, we tested whether axillary odors obtained from women experiencing psychosocial stress could negatively influence personality judgments of warmth and competence made about other women depicted in video scenarios. 44 female donors provided three types of sweat samples: untreated exercise sweat, untreated stress sweat and treated stress sweat. After a ‘washout’ period, a commercial unscented anti-perspirant product was applied to the left axilla only to evaluate whether ‘blocking’ the stress signal would improve the social evaluations. A separate group of male and female evaluators (n = 120) rated the women in the videos while smelling one of the three types of sweat samples. Women in the video scenes were rated as being more stressed by both men and women when smelling the untreated vs. treated stress sweat. For men only, the women in the videos were rated as less confident, trustworthy and competent when smelling both the untreated stress and exercise sweat in contrast to the treated stress sweat. Women’s social judgments were unaffected by sniffing the pads. The results have implications for influencing multiple types of professional and personal social interactions and impression management and extend our understanding of the social communicative function of body odors.  相似文献

Axillary body odor is individually specific and potentially a rich source of information about its producer. Odor individuality partly results from genetic individuality, but the influence of ecological factors such as eating habits are another main source of odor variability. However, we know very little about how particular dietary components shape our body odor. Here we tested the effect of red meat consumption on body odor attractiveness. We used a balanced within-subject experimental design. Seventeen male odor donors were on "meat" or "nonmeat" diet for 2 weeks wearing axillary pads to collect body odor during the final 24 h of the diet. Fresh odor samples were assessed for their pleasantness, attractiveness, masculinity, and intensity by 30 women not using hormonal contraceptives. We repeated the same procedure a month later with the same odor donors, each on the opposite diet than before. Results of repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the odor of donors when on the nonmeat diet was judged as significantly more attractive, more pleasant, and less intense. This suggests that red meat consumption has a negative impact on perceived body odor hedonicity.  相似文献

Animals often use different sensory systems to assess different sexually selected signals from potential mates. However, the relative importance of different signals on mate choice is not well understood in many animal species. In this study, we examined the relative importance of male olfactory and visual cues on female preference in the guppy Poecilia reticulata. We used digitally modified male images to standardize visual stimuli. We found that, regardless of whether females were presented without male visual stimuli or with identical male visual stimuli, they preferred stimuli with the odor of males to those without. However, when females were allowed to choose between dull male visual stimuli with male odor, and brightly colored male visual stimuli without male odor, there was no clear preference for either. Some females preferred the dull male visual stimuli with male odor, whereas some other females preferred the brightly colored male visual stimuli without male odor. These results indicate that the relative importance of olfactory and visual cues in female mate preference varied between individuals.  相似文献

In order to understand the biosorption of Basic Organic (BO) textile dye on dried Azolla filiculoides (A. filiculoides), batch experiments were conducted under various conditions. The results show that biosorption of BO on dried A. filiculoides was dependent on the initial solution pH, biosorbent dosage, contact time and the initial BO concentration. Using the Langmuir equation, the biosorption capacity (qm) for BO was 833 mg/g at 303 K. The kinetic study suggested that the mechanism of biosorption was due to ion-exchange physisorption via the intra-particle diffusion and chemisorption on the external surface of dried A. filiculoides. Different techniques were used to characterize dried A. filiculoides and indicated that the biomass had a high cation exchange capacity (93.6 mmol/100 g), a large specific surface area (80.35–422.89 m2/g) and contained various functional groups which may play an important role in the physisorption and chemisorption of BO on the surface of A. filiculoides. The results showed that the removal ratio of BO reached 79.3% from wastewater containing 100 mg/L BO, indicating that the biomass could be used as a potential biosorbent for the removal of BO from industrial wastewater.  相似文献

We report an experiment designed to investigate whether olfactory cues can influence people's judgments of facial attractiveness. Sixteen female participants judged the attractiveness of a series of male faces presented briefly on a computer monitor using a 9-point visual rating scale. While viewing each face, the participants were simultaneously presented with either clean air or else with 1 of 4 odorants (the odor was varied on a trial-by-trial basis) from a custom-built olfactometer. We included 2 pleasant odors (geranium and a male fragrance) and 2 unpleasant odors (rubber and body odor) as confirmed by pilot testing. The results showed that the participants rated the male faces as being significantly less attractive in the presence of an unpleasant odor than when the faces were presented together with a pleasant odor or with clean air (these conditions did not differ significantly). These results demonstrate the cross-modal influence that unpleasant odors can have on people's judgments of facial attractiveness. Interestingly, this pattern of results was unaffected by whether the odors were body relevant (the body odor and the male fragrance) or not (the rubber and geranium odors).  相似文献

Online educational videos have the potential to enhance undergraduate biology learning, for example by showcasing contemporary scientific research and providing content coverage. Here, we describe the integration of nine videos into a large‐enrollment (n = 356) introductory evolution and ecology course via weekly homework assignments. We predicted that videos that feature research stories from contemporary scientists could reinforce topics introduced in lecture and provide students with novel insights into the nature of scientific research. Using qualitative analysis of open‐ended written feedback from the students on each video assigned throughout the term (n = 133–229 responses per video) and on end‐of‐quarter evaluations (n = 243), we identified common categories of student perspectives. All videos received more positive than negative comments and all videos received comments indicating that students found them intellectually and emotionally stimulating, accessible, and relevant to course content. Additionally, all videos also received comments indicating some students found them intellectually unstimulating, though these comments were generally far less numerous than positive comments. Students responded positively to videos that incorporated at least one of the following: documentary‐style filming, very clear links to course content (especially hands‐on activities completed by the students), relevance to recent world events, clarity on difficult topics, and/or charismatic narrators or species. We discuss opportunities and challenges for the use of online educational videos in teaching ecology and evolution, and we provide guidelines instructors can use to integrate them into their courses.  相似文献

Studies of neuronal oscillations have contributed substantial insight into the mechanisms of visual, auditory, and somatosensory perception. However, progress in such research in the human olfactory system has lagged behind. As a result, the electrophysiological properties of the human olfactory system are poorly understood, and, in particular, whether stimulus-driven high-frequency oscillations play a role in odor processing is unknown. Here, we used direct intracranial recordings from human piriform cortex during an odor identification task to show that 3 key oscillatory rhythms are an integral part of the human olfactory cortical response to smell: Odor induces theta, beta, and gamma rhythms in human piriform cortex. We further show that these rhythms have distinct relationships with perceptual behavior. Odor-elicited gamma oscillations occur only during trials in which the odor is accurately perceived, and features of gamma oscillations predict odor identification accuracy, suggesting that they are critical for odor identity perception in humans. We also found that the amplitude of high-frequency oscillations is organized by the phase of low-frequency signals shortly following sniff onset, only when odor is present. Our findings reinforce previous work on theta oscillations, suggest that gamma oscillations in human piriform cortex are important for perception of odor identity, and constitute a robust identification of the characteristic electrophysiological response to smell in the human brain. Future work will determine whether the distinct oscillations we identified reflect distinct perceptual features of odor stimuli.

Intracranial recordings from human olfactory cortex reveal a characteristic spectrotemporal response to odors, including theta, beta and gamma oscillations, and show that high-frequency responses are critical for accurate perception of odors.  相似文献
