Using the 16-moment equations that take into account heat fluxes in anisotropic collisionless plasma, the properties of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities are investigated. For all instabilities occurring in the MHD approach (the normal incompressible firehose instability, the second compressible almost longitudinal firehose instability, and the almost transverse mirror instability of slow magnetosonic modes, as well as thermal instability caused by the heat flux directed along the magnetic field), their kinetic analogs are considered. The kinetic dispersion relation in the low-frequency range in the vicinity of the ion thermal velocity is analyzed. The flow of plasma ions along the magnetic field is taken into account. The thresholds and instability growth rates obtained in the MHD and kinetic approaches are found to be in good agreement. This indicates that the 16-moment MHD equations adequately describe the dynamics of collisionless plasma.  相似文献

A study is made of the processes that occur in an inhomogeneous nonisothermal plasma in a strong external magnetic field and whose characteristic frequencies are lower than the ion Langmuir frequency but higher than the collision frequency. An expression for the ponderomotive force of the low-frequency field is derived. The excitation of a long-wavelength low-frequency drift wave during the development of the modulational instability of a drift pump wave is investigated. The growth rates of the instability are obtained, and the conditions for its onset are determined. The possible relation of the modulational instability to the formation of structures in the plasma is discussed.  相似文献

The nonlinear stage of instability of an annular electron beam spatially separated from an annular plasma is investigated. The equations describing coupled waves for an arbitrary ratio between the beam and plasma densities are derived. It is shown that instability saturates at distances on the order of several inverse spatial growth rates. The saturation is caused by relativistic nonlinearity, generation of the second harmonic, and low-frequency modulation of the electromagnetic field. At larger distances, resonant generation of low-frequency beam oscillations becomes a dominant factor. In the case of a low-density beam, an expression for the maximum power of the generated plasma wave is obtained in an explicit form.  相似文献

The amplitude of the wave generated in a plasma during the development of beam-plasma instability is nonuniform in the longitudinal direction. The ponderomotive force associated with this nonuniformity leads to a redistribution of the plasma density; as a result, the wave amplitude and its spatial distribution change. As the beam current grows, the ponderomotive force plays an increasingly important role and radically changes the mechanism by which the beam-plasma instability saturates. Ion acoustic waves generated by the ponderomotive force propagate in the direction opposite to the propagation direction of the beam, thereby ensuring distributed feedback and giving rise to a strong low-frequency self-modulation of the wave amplitude and phase. Results are presented from experimental investigations of the self-modulation regime of the beam-plasma instability in a magnetized plasma waveguide. Theoretical estimates of the parameters of the low-frequency self-modulation agree well with the experimental data.  相似文献

The spectrum of eigenmodes of a waveguide completely filled with a cold electron plasma containing a small admixture of ions produced due to electron-impact ionization of background gas atoms is calculated numerically. The calculations were performed within the entire range of allowable values of the radial electric and longitudinal magnetic fields for both magnetized and unmagnetized ions by using the earlier derived nonlocal dispersion relation [Plasma Phys. Rep. 36, 563 (2010)]. The spectrum consists of three families of electron modes with frequencies equal to the Doppler-shifted upper and lower hybrid frequencies and modified ion cyclotron (MIC) modes. When the Doppler shift caused by electron rotation in the crossed electric and magnetic fields compensates for the hybrid frequency, the electron modes become low-frequency modes and interact with the ion modes. For m = 1, only the lower hybrid modes can be low-frequency ones, whereas at m ≥ 2, both lower and upper hybrid modes can be low-frequency ones. The spectrum of modes having the azimuthal number m = 2 is thoroughly analyzed. It is shown that, in this case, the lower hybrid modes behave similar to the m = 1 modes. The dispersion curves of the upper hybrid modes intersect with all harmonics of the MIC frequency (positive, negative, and zero) and are unstable in the vicinities of the intersections. The maximum value of the instability growth rate is several times higher than the ion plasma frequency. The MIC modes are unstable within a wide range of the field strengths, and their growth rates are two orders of magnitude slower. Instabilities are caused by the relative motion of electrons and ions (the transverse current) and the anisotropy of the ion distribution function.  相似文献

The regimes of the instabilities of an annular relativistic electron beam in a waveguide with an annular plasma are systematically analyzed and classified. The growth rates of the instabilities are calculated different limiting cases, and the resonance conditions for the development of the instabilities are determined. The fastest growing instability of a high-current relativistic electron beam in a waveguide with a dense plasma is considered. The possible onset of a low-frequency instability of a beam in a waveguide with a low-density plasma is investigated. Typical examples of how the growth rates depend on the perturbation wavenumbers are presented for systems with parameters close to the experimental ones.  相似文献

The modulational instability in a plasma in a strong constant external magnetic field is considered. The plasmon condensate is modulated not by conventional low-frequency ion sound but by the beatings of two high-frequency transverse electromagnetic waves propagating along the magnetic field. The instability reduces the spatial scales of Langmuir turbulence along the external magnetic field and generates electromagnetic fields. It is shown that, for a pump wave with a sufficiently large amplitude, the effect described in the present paper can be a dominant nonlinear process.  相似文献

A brief review is given of papers on the RF production of a plasma whose electrons are heated due to the parametric turbulence driven by an alternating electric pump field and maintain the discharge by ionizing the working gas atoms. Results are summarized from studies of low-frequency parametric turbulence, specifically, ion-acoustic plasma turbulence in a magnetic field, ion-cyclotron turbulence associated with the excitation of ion Bernstein modes, and lower hybrid turbulence in a plasma with ions of one or two species. The turbulence level and the rate of turbulent heating of the electrons and ions are presented, and the results of modeling of these phenomena are described. Attention is focused on experiments in which low-frequency parametric turbulence may be observed.  相似文献

Early detection of cancer-associated genomic instability is crucial, particularly in tumour types in which this instability represents the essential underlying mechanism of tumourigenesis. Currently used methods require the presence of already established neoplastic cells because they only detect clonal mutations. In principle, parallel sequencing of single DNA filaments could reveal the early phases of tumour initiation by detecting low-frequency mutations, provided an adequate depth of coverage and an effective control of the experimental error. We applied ultradeep sequencing to estimate the genomic instability of individuals with hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). To overcome the experimental error, we used an ultraconserved region (UCR) of the human genome as an internal control. By comparing the mutability outside and inside the UCR, we observed a tendency of the ultraconserved element to accumulate significantly fewer mutations than the flanking segments in both neoplastic and nonneoplastic HNPCC samples. No difference between the two regions was detectable in cells from healthy donors, indicating that all three HNPCC samples have mutation rates higher than the healthy genome. This is the first, to our knowledge, direct evidence of an intrinsic genomic instability of individuals with heterozygous mutations in mismatch repair genes, and constitutes the proof of principle for the development of a more sensitive molecular assay of genomic instability.  相似文献

The electric excitation of a neuron is interpreted as the formation of a nonlinear solitary ion acoustic wave of the charge density of sodium and hydrogen ions in an electrolytic intracellular fluid, which is treated as a dense plasma. It is shown that such a wave can be described by the coupled sine-Gordon and Korteweg-de Vries equations, having a solution in the form of a soliton whose internal vibrational structure is described by the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam spectrum. It is concluded that a nerve impulse can be interpreted as a low-frequency solitary wave of the charge density of sodium ions with a trapped high-frequency charge density wave of protons.  相似文献

The membrane potential of hair cells in the low-frequency hearing organ of the bullfrog, the amphibian papilla, sinusoidally oscillates at small amplitude in the absence of acoustical input. We stimulate the cell with a series of periodic currents close to this natural frequency and observe that its current-to-voltage transfer function is compressively nonlinear, having a large gain for small stimuli and a smaller gain for larger currents. Along with the spontaneous oscillation, this implies that the cell is poised close to a dynamical instability such as a Hopf bifurcation, because distant from the instability the transfer function becomes linear. The cell's frequency selectivity is enhanced for small stimuli. Simulations show that the cell's membrane capacitance is effectively reduced due to a current gain provided by this dynamical instability. We propose that the Hopf resonance is widely used by transducer cells on the sensory periphery to achieve small-signal amplification.  相似文献

We seek to extend the recent suggestion that classical cyclotron resonance of biologically important ions is implicated in weak electromagnetic field-cell interactions. The motion of charged particles in a constant magnetic field and periodic electric field is examined under the simplifying assumption of no damping. Each of the nine terms of the relative dielectric tensor is found to have a dependence on functions that include the factor (omega 2 - omega 2B)-1, where omega B is the gyrofrequency. We also find a plasmalike decomposition of the electric field into oppositely rotating components that could conceivably act to drive oppositely charged ions in the same direction through helical membrane channels. For weak low-frequency magnetic fields, an additional feature arises, namely, periodic reinforcement of the resonance condition with intervals of the order of tens of msec for biological ions such as Li+, Na+, and K+.  相似文献

During the observation of Perseid, Leonid, Gemenid, and Orionid meteor showers, stable low-frequency lines in the frequency range of 20–60 Hz were recorded against the radio-frequency noise background. A physical mechanism for this effect is proposed, and it is established that the effect itself is related to the modulational interaction between electromagnetic and dust acoustic waves. The dynamics of the components of a complex (dusty) ionospheric plasma with dust produced from the evolution of meteoric material is described. The conditions for the existence of dust acoustic waves in the ionosphere are considered, and the waves are shown to dissipate energy mainly in collisions of neutral particles with charged dust grains. The modulational instability of electromagnetic waves in a complex (dusty) ionospheric plasma is analyzed and is found to be driven by the nonlinear Joule heating, the ponderomotive force, and the processes governing dust charging and dynamics. The conditions for the onset of the modulational instability of electromagnetic waves, as well as its growth rate and threshold, are determined for both daytime and nighttime. It is shown that low-frequency perturbations generated in the modulational interaction are related to dust acoustic waves.  相似文献

Exposure to ionizing radiation can increase the risk of cancer, which is often characterized by genomic instability. In environmental exposures to high-LET radiation (e.g. 222Ra), it is unlikely that many cells will be traversed or that any cell will be traversed by more than one alpha particle, resulting in an in vivo bystander situation, potentially involving inflammation. Here primary human lymphocytes were irradiated with precise numbers of 3He2+ ions delivered to defined cell population fractions, to as low as a single cell being traversed, resembling in vivo conditions. Also, we assessed the contribution to genomic instability of the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFA). Genomic instability was significantly elevated in irradiated groups (> or = two-fold over controls) and was comparable whether cells were traversed by one or two 3He2+ ions. Interestingly, substantial heterogeneity in genomic instability between experiments was observed when only one cell was traversed. Genomic instability was significantly reduced (60%) in cultures in which all cells were irradiated in the presence of TNFA antibody, but not when fractions were irradiated under the same conditions, suggesting that TNFA may have a role in the initiation of genomic instability in irradiated cells but not bystander cells. These results have implications for low-dose exposure risks and cancer.  相似文献

It is shown that the electric field may cause instability of low-frequency potential oscillations with a period of about 1 min in the D region of the ionosphere. This is related to the fact that the attachment rate of electrons to molecules is a nonmonotonic function of the temperature: it increases at low temperatures and decreases at high temperatures. The temperature corresponding to the maximum attachment rate is about 1000 K. The development of instability can result in the formation of quasi-steady layers of the electron density with a characteristic spatial period of several tens of meters. Such inhomogeneities can affect the propagation of radio waves with wavelengths on the order of or shorter than 10 m.  相似文献

Temporal stability of the relationship between a potential proxy climate record and the climate record itself is the foundation of palaeoproxy reconstructions of past climate variability. Dendroclimatologists have spent considerable effort exploring the issue of temporal instability of temperature records at high-latitude and −altitude Northern Hemisphere sites. Much of this work has focused on the Divergence Problem in which the modern ends of tree-ring chronologies exhibit pronounced departures from the climate-proxy relationships of preceding decades. However, there has been little scrutiny of how different methods might influence determinations of temporal instability at either the local scale or across broader spatial domains. Here we use four sets of Southern Hemisphere (SH) chronologies and three sets of synthetic data with known interventions to compare four methodologies that have been widely used to assess the temporal stability of relationships between tree-ring series and climate. Our analyses demonstrate that a determination of temporal instability may be partially dependent on method used to examine data, that some methods are more sensitive to standardisation choice than others, and that all methods are better at detecting high- rather than low-frequency instability. In all cases, the relatively modest strength of the relationships between the selected SH ring-width chronologies and temperature is likely to be an issue, especially if changes in trends are of interest. We recommend that robust assessment of temporal instability between tree-ring chronologies and observational climate data should use a range of methods and that unstable temporal relationships across space be carefully considered in the context of large climate field reconstructions.  相似文献

When the dominant mechanism for ion acceleration is the laser radiation pressure, the conversion efficiency of the laser energy into the energy of relativistic ions may be very high. Stability analysis of a thin plasma layer accelerated by the radiation pressure shows that Raleigh-Taylor instability may enhance plasma inhomogeneity. In the linear stage of instability, the plasma layer decays into separate bunches, which are accelerated by the radiation pressure similarly to clusters accelerated under the action of an electromagnetic wave. The energy and luminosity of an ion beam accelerated in the radiation-pressure-dominated regime are calculated.  相似文献

On the cyclotron resonance model of ion transport.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The cyclotron-resonance model, which has been suggested as an explanation of a purported enhancement of transport of ions through the membranes of cells exposed to weak, low-frequency-modulated RF fields, is shown to be inconsistent with basic physical principles. Under the conditions of the model, in which the ions are presumed to circulate under the constraint of the earth's magnetic field, the radii of gyration of the ions would approximate 50 m and, thus, are much larger than the cells. Moreover, from general considerations, the collision-damping time of such ions is expected to be less than 10(-10) s, much smaller than the times of the order of 10(-2) s, shown to be necessary if the conditions for low-frequency resonance are to be satisfied.  相似文献

Dielectric dispersion of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSS) was measured in the presence of divalent cations. Effects of divalent ions were studied by neutralization with varying ratios of sodium hydroxide and divalent base concentration, addition of salts of divalent cations, and neutralization with divalent bases only. Two dispersion regions were observed in all cases, i.e., low-frequency dispersion (102–104 Hz) and high-frequency dispersion (105–106 Hz). The dielectric increment increases in the presence of sodium and alkaline earth metal ions together, but not with sodium and transition metal ions. This is due to the increment of low-frequency dispersion and is attributable to the fluctuation of bound counterions which is explained by our theory previously reported.1 In the case of PAA neutralized with large fractions of divalent ions, or with divalent ions only, the increment is very small because of reduction of the fluctuation by interaction between bound ions at the neighboring sites and reduction of the effective length of polyion probably due to chelation by divalent ions. There are some differences among the effects of Mg++, Ca++, and Ba++ on dielectric increment which may result from affinity or chelating ability of these ions.  相似文献
