A new genus and species of calanoid copepod belonging to the family of Ridgewayiidae is described from an anchialine cave on the small island of Badija, Croatia. In the new species Badijella jalzici, body length varies from 720-870 µm in both sexes. The prosome is 6-segmented, the female urosome is 4-segmented and 5-segmented in the male. The antennules are symmetrical and 26-segmented in the female, and 23-segmented on right side in the male, with two areas of geniculation. The caudal rami are symmetrical and longer than wide. The mouthparts and swimming legs 1-4 are identical in both sexes. The female fifth leg is biramous and symmetrical; the male fifth legs are strongly developed, asymmetrical, biramous on both sides, endopods 2-segmented and exopods 2-segmented and complex in structure.  相似文献

Eodiaptomus shihi n. sp. is described from the material collected from Gandhisagar reservoir, River Narmada and a hillpool in the Madhya Pradesh State of central India. The salient features of this new species include: in female, the left metasomal wing is strongly developed, and the endopodite in leg 5 is 2-segmented and longer than first exopodite-segment; in male, the right caudal ramus is armed with a tooth-like chitinous structure near ventro-distal region, and in right leg 5, the basis is devoid of any hyaline lobe on inner margin and the first exopodite-segment is produced into a large spinous process at disto-outer corner.  相似文献

We present a macrogeographic study of spatial heterogeneityin an important subarctic Pacific copepod and describe the firstgenetic analysis of population structure using Continuous PlanktonRecorder (CPR) samples. Samples of Neocalanus cristatus werecollected at a constant depth of 7 m from two CPR tow-routes,(i) an east–west 6500-km transect from Vancouver Island,Canada to Hokkaido Island, Japan, and (ii) a north–southtransect of 2250 km from Anchorage, Alaska to Tacoma, Washington.Analysis of these samples revealed three features of the biologyof N. cristatus. First, N. cristatus undergoes small-scale dielvertical migration that is larger among stages CV–adult(3–6 times more abundant at 7 m at night), than stagesCI–CIV (only 2–4 times higher at night). Secondly,while there were no regions where N. cristatus did not appear,each transect sampled a few large-scale macrogeographic patches.Thirdly, an analysis of molecular variation, using a partialsequence of the N. cristatus cytochrome oxidase I gene, revealedthat 7.3% (P < 0.0001) of the total genetic variation amongN. cristatus sampled from macrogeographic patches by the CPRcould be explained by spatial heterogeneity. We suggest thatspatial heterogeneity at macrogeographic scales may be importantin plankton evolution.  相似文献

The effect of shading a single tiller to below its compensationpoint for a period of 5 weeks in vegetative plants of Loliumperenne L. cv. S23, was studied in two different experimentseach employing two light regimes, one of which was common toboth experiments. In the first experiment tillers in the axils of the first leafwere shaded three weeks from appearance at both 40 and 70 Wm–2. None of the shaded tillers died and they continuedto produce new leaves and increase in dry weight but at a reducedrate. In the second experiment, tillers with one emerged leafin any leaf axil position were shaded at 70 W m–2 andin a treatment in which light was reduced to 13 W m–2after initial growth at 70 W m–2. As in the first experimentall shaded tillers survived at 70 W m–2 but in the 70 13 W m–2 transfer regime all shaded tillers died. In the second experiment shaded tillers in both light regimeswere supplied with 14C-assimilate by translocation from theremainder of the plant but in the 70 13 W m–2 the initialsupport was withdrawn within 5 weeks of shading. Smith, J. R., Smith, F. A. and Walker, N. A. 1987. Potassiumtransport across the membrane of Chara. I. The relationshipbetween radioactive tracer influx and electrical conductance.—J.exp. Bot. 38:731–751. The 42K influx () and the electrical conductance (Gm) were measured simultaneously for the ‘membrane’of internodal cells of Chara australis as a function of theexternal [KCl] (K?. In bathing solutions of pH = 5?0, progressively increased from 20?5to 430?60 nmol m–2 s–1 and Gm increased from 0?36?0?02to 3?8?0?8 S m–2 when K? was increased from 0?1 to 10mol m–3. The resting membrane potential difference (p.d.)was approximately -135 mV for low K? and approached the expectedNernst equilibrium p.d. for K+ ions when K? > 1?0 mol m–3.Measurements of 36Cl influx suggested that the 42K influx waspredominantly electrogenic. The equivalent Goldman permeabilityto K+ ions (Pk) was approximately 20–30 nm s–1 anddid not vary significantly with increasing K?. The equivalentconductance attributable to the electrogenic transport of K+ ions was calculated from assuming passive, independent diffusionof K+ ions and the ratio was found to be typically close to one. It was also found that themagnitudes of and Gm measuredsimultaneously for each individual cell were also well correlatedfor K? 1?0 mol m–3, and that the slope of the line ofbest fit was close to one. For each K? it was found that theconductance not attributable to K+ translocation and presumablyassociated primarily with the transport of protons or theirequivalents was typically 0?2–0?5 Sm–2. For K? >1?0 mol m–3 the results indicated that the transport ofK+ ions was essentially independent, i.e. there was no evidencefor flux interactions. The results also indicated that the equivalentconductance derived from the measured 42K influx could usefullyindicate the fraction of the electrical conductance attributableto the translocation of K+ ions. Diel vertical studies of zooplankton community filtration rates(CFR) were undertaken in situ over two annual cycles in a shelteredbay of Lake le Roux, a large silt-laden oligotrophic reservoirin the arid subtropics of South Africa. The grazer communitywas dominated by a copepod, Meradiaptomus meridianus, whileDaphnia gibba. D. barbara and Moina brachiara accounted forthe balance. Spot estimates of CFR varied from 0.1 to 75% d–1( = 12.2) in the upper 10 m, while depth-integrated values ranged seasonally from 0.1 to 15% d–1 ( = 7.4). Most variation in CFR was attributable toseasonal changes in grazer biomass (0–408, = 58.2 µg 1–1 or 3–1000, 360 mg m–2 dry wt), and temperature (12–22C). Thesevariables are used to construct multiple linear regression modelsfor the prediction of CFR in this system. Some higher CFR values(up to 260% d–1 were measured in wanner (up to 26.5C)surface waters with an unusually rich zooplankion (786 rg 1–1).No significant did vertical changes in CFR or grazer biomasswere observed. Both variables declined sharply with depth. Inorganicturbidity dominated the seston, and algal carbon probably accountedon average for less than about 20% of the total POC available.The feeding responses of this turbid-water community were generallyconsistent with observations made on other assemblages, apartfrom seemingly high specific filtration rates which, atypically,were inversely related to temperature.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Studies are described on the adenosine triphosphatase(ATPase) properties of myosin isolated from skeletal muscleof Coryphaenoides, a benthic fish captured at 2,200 meters depth.Ca2+-ATPase and EDTA-ATPase of Coryphaenoides myosin show thesame pH dependence as ATPase of mammalian myosin; however, ratesof ATP hydrolysis by Coryphaenoides myosin are only 5–10%of rates of ATP hydrolysis by rabbit skeletal myosin. Coryphaenoidesmyosin ATPase shows a decrease from Q10 of 2.0 at 25°C toQ10 of 1.4 a t 2°C, and undergoes irreversible denaturationat temperatures above 25°C. At pH 6.8 to pH 8.5, Coryphaenoidesmyosin ATPase undergoes activation by pressure at 25°C,but at 2°C shows negligible effect of pressure at valuesbelow 3,000 psi. The kinetic data on Ca2+-ATPase indicate valuesof 11 kcal/mole for H, –7.5 kcal/mole for TS, and –5.7cc/mole for V at 25°C, pH 7.6. Comparable data at 2°Cindicate values of 5 kcal/mole for H. –13 kcal/mole forTS, and negligible V. According to the results of 25°C,Ca2+-activatkm of myosin-ATP may involve disruption of fouror five hydrophobic or polar groups, presumably due to an "opening-up"of the myosin molecule at or near the site for ATP binding.It would also appear that Coryphaenoides myosin has undergonean adaptive change in the enzyme mechanism for ATPase such thatthe rate of ATP hydrolysis is relatively insensitive to pressureand temperature under conditions encountered by the living fish.  相似文献

A laboratory-held specimen of Tonna zonatum was fed holothurianprey over a period of 21 weeks. At first, the Tonna consumedHolothuria cinerascens, H. insignis and H. fuscocinerea, butsubsequently consumed only H. leucospilota. Prey size chosenwas in the range 54–200 g total weight with approximately1 holothurian being eaten each week by extension of the proboscis.Consumption time was 2–5 minutes and records of rejectionof living prey showed that food is not cut up in the proboscisby the jaws or the radula but is engulfed whole. Holothurians reacted violently to the hunting Tonna, typicallyby taking in large quantities of water to increase in size,particularly in diameter. Holothuria fuscocinerea ‘fled’the predator while H. scabra and H. leucospilota became buoyantand, writhing, effected simple ‘swimming’. Calculations of consumption show that this adult specimen consumed2% (wet weight) or 1% (dry weight) of its body weight. day–1.This is much lower than figures for other predatory gastropods,i.e. 5%. day–1. Analysis of faeces production, correlatedwith consumption, suggests a residence time in the gut of 4days and an assimilation efficiency of 80.02%. Effects of light flux density (LFD) during growth and uptakeassay on induction of transport system and kinetics of transport were studied using the Azolla pinnata-Anabaena azollae association (Azolla). Theinduction and uptake kinetics of the transport system were determined using an automated system that measuredthe NO3 concentration in the growth medium as a function oftime, using an on-line high performance liquid chromatograph(HPLC) with a UV-VIS detector. Full induction of the transport system required about 1.5 to 2.0 h and occurred without any apparent lag phase,regardless of the LFD provided. The level of induction of transport of Azolla grown at 600 µmol m–2s–1 LFD was higher than for that grown at 100 µmolm–2 s–1. Similarly, 600 µmol m–1 s–1LFD during the assay resulted in a higher level of inductionthan did 100 umol m–2 s–1. An increase in the LFDeither during the growth or the assay period increased the uptake rate; however, an increase in LFD duringthe latter period had greater effect. Azolla grown and assayedat 600 umol m–2 s–1 had the highest uptake rate. The uptake rate at 50 cm3 m–3ambient CO2 concentration was initially higher than at 305 cm3m–3, but the uptake rate decreased rapidly with time andeventually dropped below that at 305 cm3 m–3 CO2. Thesedata suggest that the energy required for transport in Azolla may bypass the photosynthetic CO2 fixationand carbon-cycling. Four species of seagrasses, Halophila stipulacea, Thalassodendronciliatum, Halodule uninervis, and Syringodium isoetifolium,were investigated for their ability to utilize and CO2 as exogenous carbon sources for photosynthesis. Ratesof photosynthesis were measured as rates of O2 evolution ina closed system in which the pH was continuously controlled.A computer program was written to calculate the concentrationsof different carbon species as a function of pH and other specifiedexperimental conditions. Bicarbonate as well as CO2 were readily assimilated by all fourseagrass species. Saturating concentrations of , at saturating light intensities, were 0.5–1.8 mM dependingon the species. Rates of photosynthesis under such conditionswere 0.1–0.55 µmol O2 min–1 mg–1 chlorophyll.At saturating CO2 concentrations, i.e. 0.5–1.3 mM, ratesof photosynthesis were 0.22–1.4 µmol CO2 min–1mg–1 chlorophyll. Photosynthetic rates in each specieswere considerably higher when CO2 rather than was supplied at saturating concentrations. The concentration of in natural seawater was found to be saturating, and that of CO2 insufficient forconsiderable photosynthetic rates in these plants under thegiven conditions It was thus concluded that is the major carbon source for photosynthesis in seagrasses.  相似文献

High-speed plankton nets, using mesh sizes of 61, 90, 124,190and 270 µn, were deployed in the North Sea to catch Calanusspp., Pseudocalanus minutus, Paracalanus parvus and Temora longicomis.These species were identified to their nauplii, copepodite andadult stages, and the numbers caught in each stage were convertedto numbers m–3 seawater filtered. The width and lengthof a representative sample of each stage was measured, and theproportion caught by the different mesh sizes is presented.The selection pattern was described by a mathematical model,which showed that a mesh size of 75% of the copepod carapacewidth catches 95% of the individuals of that size present inthe seawater. Some recommendations for mesh sizes required tosample copepods are given.  相似文献

A new parasitic copepod, Tiddergasilus bipartitus n. sp. (Copepoda, Ergasilidae), is described herein based on three adult females found attached to the gills of the yellow-tail lambari Astyanax lacustris (Lütken), sampled in Pardo River, municipality of Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. Tiddergasilus bipartitus n. sp. was recognized as a new member of the monotypic genus Tiddergasilus Marques & Boeger, 2018 by having: antennule 6-segmented; maxillary basis armed with 2 terminal teeth and ornamented with multiple spinules; second and third leg both with endopod 3-segmented. The new copepod can be distinguished from its congener, Tiddergasilus iheringi (Tidd, 1942), by the morphology of the antennal claw, number of somites/segments in abdomen and fourth leg, and by the ornamentation of the first leg. This report expands the geographic distribution and diversity of fish species parasitized with Tiddergasilus spp. in Brazil. Moreover, it also represents the first report of an ergasilid species in the Pardo River. A list of diagnostic features for the Brazilian species of Ergasilus von Nordmann, 1832 is provided herein, in order to aid comparisons with the species of this complex genus.

The impact of a cyclopoid copepod population on the protozoacommunity (two ciliate categories and Cryptomonas) was assessedweekly during the spring cohort of Cyclops vicinus (one monthduration) in hypereutrophic Lake Søbygård by insitu gradient experiments with manipulation of ambient zooplanktonabundance. As C.vicinus always made up >92% of the zooplanktonbiomass, the response of protozoa is assumed to be a resultof predation by the copepod. Significant effects of copepodbiomass on protozoa net population growth rates were obtainedin the four experiments. Copepod clearance rates were significantlyhigher on oligotrichs than on prostomatids and Cryptomonas butdeclined for all three protozoa categories during the firstthree weeks of the copepod cohort, probably because of the changein developmental instar composition of the copepod population.Grazing impact on protozoa at ambient copepod abundance wasconsiderable (range, 0.05–0.87 day–1) and could,together with the estimated reproductive potential of protozoans(range, –0.20–0.87 day–1), account for thedecline in abundance and biomass of protozoa during the cohortdevelopment. Carbon flow from the protozoa to C.vicinus (range,2.8–23.5 µg C l–1 day–1) documents thepresence of a trophic link between protozoa and the spring cohortof C.vicinus in Lake Søbygård.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to quantify the functional responsein feeding rate in the various developmental stages of Calanusfinmarchicus to different concentrations of the diatoms Thalassiosiranordenskioeldii and Porosira glacialis, and the haptophyseanPhaeocystis pouchetii. Grazing of copepodite stage I–VC.finmarchicus was measured using two different approaches.Feeding rates were obtained from either incubation experiments,estimating the rate of removal of particles from suspension,or by quantifying the turnover rate of the plant pigments inthe gut. Clearance as a function of algal concentration (1–30µg plant pigment 1–1) was described in juvenilestages of C.finmarchicus fed the diatoms T.nordenskioeldii [20µm equivalent spherical diameter (ESD)], P.glacialis (40µm ESD), and two size categories (30–100 µmand >100 µm ESD) of the gelatinous alga P.pouchetii.When the copepodite stages were fed T.nordenskioeldii, the gutcontent of plant pigments was in general higher than when fedP.glacialis. Rates obtained were variable when the same copepoditestages were offered the two size categories of P.pouchetii,but within the same order of magnitude as those obtained forthe larger diatom. At unialgal diets, diatoms were more readilyconsumed than the larger size fraction among colonies of P.pouchetiiby copepodite stage I–III C.finmarchicus. But given anappropriate prey size, C.finmarchicus grazed both diatoms andcolonies of gelatinous algae at equal rates. A linear relationshipbetween gut content and food concentrations <10 µgchlorophyll 1–1 was found. Lake Rogoznica, near ibenik, Croatia, is a salt coastal lakewith a maximum depth of about 15 m. During most of the year,this small, naturally eutrophied lake is highly stratified,with hypoxia/anoxia occurring in the bottom layer. Total anoxia,with the presence of hydrogen sulphide, was recorded on September27, 1997. At that moment, massive mortality of all planktonicand benthic organisms was observed. After the anoxia, Acartiaitalica, the only planktonic copepod species of the lake, re-establishedquickly. Before anoxia, the population dynamics of the A.italicapopulation depended primarily on predator/prey relationships.However, in the post-anoxic period, nutrient–phytoplankton–copepodrelationships became more important, as there was no longerany predation pressure. From all accounts, it would appear thatonly A.italica is adapted to the extreme conditions which appearfrom time to time in the lake, and that this species has animportant role in the functioning of the lake ecosystem. The effect of substituted pyridines on the response of singlepyridine-sensitive cells from crayfish walking legs was investigatedelectrophysiologically. Seven p-substituted pyridines, actingreversibly, were identified as specific antagonists at the pyridinereceptor. The maximum saturation frequency of the response toagonists was reached in the presence of antagonists but thedose–response curves of the agonists were shifted in parallelto the right along the concentration axis. Schild plots of threehighly effective antagonists with six agonists were linear witha slope close to one, indicating competitive antagonism. Theinhibition constants yielded a K1 value of {small tilde}4–8µmol for the most effective antagonist, 4-(4-nitrobenzyl)pyridine,which had only one order of magnitude lower affinity than themost effective agonist 2,3'-bipyridyl. The antagonists 2,4'-bipyridyland 4-benzylpyridine had K1 values of 6–10 µmol,followed by 4-acetylpyridine with a K1 value of 30–70µmol. The rank order of inhibitory potency of the differentantagonists was found to be the same for all units tested. Comparingelectronic effects (Hammett values and pKa values) of the substitutentsin p- and m-position showed that inhibitory effectiveness decreasedwith a decrease in pKa and an increase in Partition coefficientswere determined for 10 agonists and the antagonists which weregenerally more lipophilic than the agonists. In Trifolium repens L. there were immediate transient depolarizationsof the membrane electropotential (Evo) when KH2PO4 was addedto phosphate-free media, but these were of the same magnitudeas the controls (K2SO4 and KCI). Furthermore, the extents ofdepolarization were the same as the expected effect of the addedK+ calculated using the Goldman equation. There was no significantdepolarization on adding H3PO4 to buffered media. Consequently,there was no evidence for a depolarization caused by phosphate.This result provides evidence that the H+–H2PO4 symportin roots of T. repens operates with a stoichiometry of 1: 1. In a group of control plants ( + P plants) and a group whichwere stressed by reducing the supply of phosphate (– Pplants), the – P plants had lower values for Evo than+P plants (– 118 mV and – 130 mV, respectively).The absence of phosphate from the measurement media also reducedEvo (mean effect = 9 mV). A significant difference in Evo between– P and + P plants persisted when phosphate was addedto – P plants. The effects of storage conditions on the germination of developingmuskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) seeds were tested to determine whetherafter-ripening is required to obtain maximum seed vigour. Seedswere harvested at 5 d intervals from 35 (immature) to 60 (fullymature) days after anthesis (DAA), washed, dried, and storedat water contents of 3·3 to 19% (dry weight basis) at6, 20, or 30°C for up to one year. Germination was testedin water and in polyethylene glycol 8000 solutions ( –0·2to –1·2 MPa osmotic potential) at 15, 20, 25 or30°C. Germination percentages and rates (inverse of meantimes to radicle emergence) were compared to those of newlyharvested, washed and dried seeds. For 40 and 60 DAA seeds,one year of storage at 20°C and water contents <6·5%significantly increased germination percentages and rates at20°C, but had little effect on germination at 25 and 30°C.Storage reduced the estimated base temperature (Tb) and meanbase water potential (b) for germination of both 40 and 60 DAAseeds by approximately 5°C and 0·3 MPa, respectively.Immature 35 DAA seeds showed the greatest benefit from storageat 3 to 5% water content and 30°C, as germination percentagesand rates increased at all water potentials (). Storage underthese same conditions had little effect on the germination ofmature seeds in water, but increased germination percentagesand rates at reduced 's. Accelerated ageing for one month at30°C and water contents from 15 to 19° increased germinationrates and percentages of mature seeds at reduced 's, but longerdurations resulted in sharp declines in both parameters. Immatureseeds lost viability within one month under accelerated ageingconditions. An after-ripening period is required at all stagesof muskmelon seed development to expand the temperature andwater potential ranges allowing germination and to achieve maximumgerminability and vigour. Post-harvest dormancy is deepest atthe point of maximum seed dry weight accumulation and declinesthereafter, both in situ within the ripening fruit and duringdry storage. The effect of Chromium VI on leaf water potential (w), solutepotential (a), turgor potential (p) and relative water content(RWC) of primary and first trifoliatc leaves of Phaseolus vulgarisL. was studied under normal growth conditions and during anartificially induced water stress period in order to establishthe possible influence of this heavy metal on the water stressresistance of plants. Plants were grown on perlite with nutrientsolution containing 0, 1•0, 2•5, 5•0 or 10•0µg cm–3 Cr as Na2Cr2O7.2H2O. The effect of Cr onwater relations was highly concentration dependent, and primaryand first trifoliate leaves were affected differently. The growthreducing concentrations of Cr (2•5, 5•0 and 10•0µg cm–3) generally decreased s and w and increasedp in primary leaves. The 1•0 µg cm–3 Cr treatmentdid not affect growth, but altered water relations substantially:in primary leaves w and p were increased and s decreased, whilein trifoliate leaves the effect was the opposite. All Cr treatedplants resisted water stress for longer than control plants.The higher water stress resistance may be due to the lower sand to the increased cell wall elasticity observed in Cr VItreated plants. Low salt roots of Cucumis sativus L. cv. Burpeeana Hybrid weresubjected to iso-ionic treatments in which the external solutionconcentration of K+ was maintained at 14 mM. Solution concentrationof varied from 0 to 14 mM, other anions compensating. When Cl was the compensating ion, its concentrationin the exudate increased during the first 4 h and thereafterwas nearly the same as that of the external solution in alltreatments containing I mM or more. After 8 h of equilibration the concentration in the exudate increased almost exactly as its concentrationin the external solution. Rates of exudation and K+ transportwere almost constant between I and 14 mM KNO2. More Clwas transported from solutions of similar Cl– concentrationwhen was also present. When water transport was inhibited with mannitol in treatments containing both KNO3and KCI, exudate concentrations of K+ and were increased, but exudate concentration of Cl was notsignificantly affected except at the highest Cl  相似文献
