We investigated the influence in hamsters of a maternal Opisthorchis viverrini infection on their offspring infected with homologous parasites and the kinetics of the O. viverrini-specific IgG antibody responses. No significant difference (P > 0.05) was found in the specific IgG antibody response and the number of O. viverrini eggs per gram feces (EPG) between infected offspring from infected mothers and infected offspring from uninfected mothers. A significant difference (P < 0.05) of EPG per worm was found between infected offspring from infected mothers and infected offspring from uninfected mothers only when the offspring were infected with O. viverrini after weaning at 5 weeks of age. The worm loads in infected offspring from infected mothers were significantly less than that in infected offspring from uninfected mothers. This study demonstrated that maternal infection effects worm fecundity and the worm load in an infected offspring.  相似文献

Small experimental swards of three types-healthy, 50% and 100% streak-virus-infected-were established from single tillers of randomly selected cocksfoot genotypes. In these swards 44% of infected plants died within 2 years compared with 21% of healthy plants. Mortality of infected plants was not increased by the presence of healthy plants in the same sward. In swards containing both healthy and infected plants, increased growth of healthy plants compensated for the low yield of infected ones only when the swards were frequently defoliated. Infrequent cutting apparently allowed infected plants to check the growth of healthy ones, and 50% infected swards yielded little more than 100% infected swards. This difference in response was attributed to differences in the growth habits of healthy and infected plants. Few initially healthy plants became infected during 2 years of the experiment.  相似文献

Granulomatous lesion formation and immune responses to Brugia pahangi infections were compared in age-matched male progeny of homologously infected and uninfected female jirds. Infections initiated in 2-week-old offspring yielded mean +/- SD adult worm recoveries of 6.0 +/- 5.7 and 4.2 +/- 5.4 in offspring from infected or uninfected mothers, respectively. Infections initiated in 4-week-old offspring resulted in an mean +/- SD recovery of adult worms of 11.3 +/- 11.3 and 10.2 +/- 5.8 in offspring from infected and uninfected mothers, respectively. The ratio of intralymphatic thrombi per intralymphatic worm was similar between infected offspring from infected or uninfected mothers within experiments. Areas of granulomas around B. pahangi antigen-coated beads embolized in the lungs were not significantly affected by maternal origin in infected or uninfected progeny. Offspring infected at 2 or 4 weeks of age from infected mothers exhibited significantly reduced titers of serum IgG antibodies to Brugia antigens at 5-8 weeks postinfection compared to infected offspring of uninfected mothers. Infected offspring from infected mothers also had significantly fewer splenic IgG plaque-forming cells to B. pahangi antigens at 5 weeks postinfection than similarly infected offspring from uninfected mothers. Western immunoblot analysis indicated qualitative and quantitative reductions in serum antibody reactivity to adult B. pahangi antigens in infected progeny of infected females compared to age-matched infected controls. Reduced homologous serum antibody responses in progeny exposed to maternal B. pahangi infection suggest that maternal immunoregulation to filarial antigens may occur. Reduced antibody responsiveness to B. pahangi antigens observed in infected offspring from infected mothers, however, had no demonstrable effect on adult worm burdens, microfilaremias, lymphatic lesion formation, or antigen-specific granulomatous inflammatory responses compared to infected progeny of uninfected mothers.  相似文献

在室内研究核型多角体病毒(HaSNPV)感染对棉铃虫Helicoverpa armigera(Htibner)幼虫同类相残行为的影响。结果显示:感病棉铃虫随感病程度的加重,越容易被健康棉铃虫残食,而自然死亡的感病棉铃虫、冻死的感病棉铃虫和冻死的健康棉铃虫三者被健康棉铃虫残食的百分率无显著差异。表明感病棉铃虫和病虫尸体更易于被健康棉铃虫残食,是由于棉铃虫体力减弱而失去反击能力,不是由于病毒本身的影响。以健康棉铃虫、感病棉铃虫为残食者,冻死的病虫为被残食者,相残率无显著差异,表明病毒并未改变棉铃虫残食同类的天性。残食病虫的健康棉铃虫的化蛹率和羽化率均低于正常的健康棉铃虫,残食者为相残行为付出了很高的代价。  相似文献

Insects vector many plant pathogens and often have higher or lower densities on infected plants than on healthy plants. Two hypotheses may explain this observation: insects may preferentially orient toward and select one plant type (referred to as orientation preference) or insects may reside on infected plants for longer or shorter periods than on healthy plants (referred to as feeding preference). The effects of feeding preference and orientation preference were compared alone and in combination using a spatially explicit model. With feeding preference for healthy or infected plants, the qualitative relationship between the percentage of plants infected and the rate of pathogen spread was not affected. However, feeding preference for healthy plants increased rates of pathogen spread, whereas feeding preference for infected plants decreased rates of pathogen spread. Unlike feeding preference, orientation preference for healthy and infected plants produced qualitatively different relationships between the percentage of plants infected and the rate of pathogen spread. With orientation preference for healthy plants, the pathogen spread slowly when few plants were infected, but quickly once most plants were infected. In contrast, with orientation preference for infected plants, the pathogen spread quickly when few plants were infected, but slowly once most plants were infected. In sensitivity analyses, we found that assumptions about the latent period (time between infection and when insects can recognize a plant as being infected) and persistence (length of time an insect remains inoculative) altered the aforementioned effects in some cases. The results illustrate that feeding and orientation preference affect pathogen spread differently, highlighting the importance of elucidating the mechanisms that control vector preference for healthy versus infected plants.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to elucidate the impact of an undescribed Nosema sp. on the southwestern corn borer (SWCB; Diatraea grandiosella Dyar). The Nosema sp. (isolate 506) included in the study was isolated from an overwintering SWCB larva in Mississippi. It was highly infectious per os, with a median infective dose of 2.0 x 10(3) spores per larva. Even at the highest dosage tested (10(7) spores per larva), minimal mortality (< or = 3%) was observed in infected larvae, pupae, and adults reared in the laboratory on an artificial diet. However, infected pupae (0- and 7-d-old) were smaller, and the time to adult eclosion from pupation was slightly increased. Furthermore, the number of eggs produced by infected SWCB female moths substantially decreased (32%), and this effect was most pronounced on day 2, when the greatest number of eggs were oviposited by infected and noninfected moths. For eggs produced by infected females mated with infected males, hatch was slightly decreased by 16 and 15% for eggs laid on days 2 and 3, respectively. In addition, egg hatch was reduced in eggs oviposited by noninfected females mated with infected males on day 3. A low prevalence of infection (< 6%) was observed in the F1 generation originating from infected females mating with noninfected males, from noninfected females mating with infected males, and from infected females mating with infected males. Nosema 506 spores were observed in the proximity of reproductive tissues of infected female and male moths. Spores also were detected on the chorion surface and within eggs laid by infected females. Furthermore, 1-11% of larvae hatching from surface-sterilized eggs were infected by Nosema 506 indicating a transovarial mechanism of transmission.  相似文献

Raspberry bushy dwarf virus (RBDV) was transmitted to raspberry seed both through the pollen and through the ovule and it infected plants pollinated with infected pollen. It did not infect plants prevented from flowering, and transmission through pollen seems to be the only method of spread in the field; in the proximity of infectors, most plants became infected during the first two or three flowering seasons. Plants containing RBDV showed no obvious symptoms, but healthy or infected flowers pollinated with infected pollen produced ‘crumbly’ fruit, containing a high proportion of aborted drupelets. RBDV was difficult to eliminate from infected raspberry by heat therapy. Raspberry cultivars that fail to become infected naturally were also immune to infection by grafting. Use of immune cultivars offers the only method of control and, because infected plants may produce crumbly fruit, future cultivars should if possible possess immunity to RBDV.  相似文献

Cauliflower mosaic in south-west England is most prevalent where there is a sequence of brassica crops that overlap in time. Broccoli yields can be increased by using plants raised in seed-beds separated by half a mile from old infected plants. Surrounding seed-beds with crops of kale or barley decreased the incidence of mosaic even when the seed-beds were only 5 yd. from infected plants.
Most plants infected at harvest contract infection after transplanting. A plant infected in the seed-bed or early in the growing season can produce a group of infected plants immediately around it, and almost as many farther away. Spread can occur in the same pattern from these secondarily infected plants.
Loss of yield is correlated with the time plants are infected. Plants infected as seedlings produce little or no curd or seed, whereas those infected when nearing maturity yield almost as well as uninfected plants.
The movement of alate aphids is positively correlated with the numbers of infectedplants, and symptoms in field plants generally appear 8–9 weeks after infection.

A hamster was inoculated with the SI-1 strain of Borrelia burgdorferi and subsequently served as a host to larval Ixodes scapularis Say. Approximately 68% of the nymphs resulting from the fed larvae were infected. Nymphs from this group were fed on uninfected hamsters, and 3 of 4 males and 6 of 6 females became infected. The infected hamsters were allowed to mate with uninfected partners to test for venereal transmission. Six infected females were mated with 6 uninfected males, whereas 3 infected males were mated with 6 uninfected females. None of the uninfected hamsters became infected after mating. Two protocols were used to determine if transplacental transmission of B. burgdorferi occurred. One group included 6 nonpregnant infected females that were subsequently mated and became pregnant. Three of the females were allowed to carry to full term, whereas the other 3 were killed prior to parturition. All fetuses and offspring were negative for B. burgdorferi based on cultures and monoclonal antibody assays. Another group of 6 females was infected via tick bite after becoming pregnant; those females were allowed to carry fetuses to birth and all were negative. Attempts at contact transmission of B. burgdorferi from 2 infected females to 2 uninfected male and 2 uninfected female hamsters and from 2 infected males to 2 uninfected male and uninfected female hamsters via urine or feces failed.  相似文献

目的 采用反刍兽源附红细胞体感染小鼠 ,研究附红细胞体的感染途径及在小鼠体内的消长规律 ,试图建立附红细胞体感染动物模型。方法 经小鼠腹腔、皮下接种含有附红细胞体的奶牛、山羊血液 ,脏器悬液和接触感染。结果 四种接种方法均获成功 ,附红细胞体在小鼠体内呈现一定的规律性。感染后第 8天附红细胞体在小鼠的血液可以查见。感染后第 15~ 18天附红细胞体的感染率达到高峰。感染后第 2 0d附红细胞体逐渐消失。在整个实验过程中未见感染小鼠明显的临床症状。结论 可以用小鼠建立附红细胞体感染动物模型。附红细胞体的感染方式有以下几种 :腹腔、皮下接种、接触感染。  相似文献

Entomophthora dipterigena, E. hylemyiae and, most commonly, E. muscae infected wheat bulb flies at Harpenden, Hertfordshire, between 1967 and 1971. The mean annual percentages of infected flies caught were 19, 0, 1, 29 and 16 respectively. These showed an increase with increasing host density. In 1970, two-thirds of the female flies were killed by E. muscae before they laid any eggs.
Conidiophores developed in most flies infected with E. muscae during the 2 weeks after peak emergence of flies. Subsequently, resting spores developed in a progressively increasing proportion of infected flies. Resting spores developed in only six of 130 infected males compared with 103 of 244 infected females in 1970 and 1971. The physiological age of infected flies probably determined whether conidiophores or resting spores developed.  相似文献

Alveolar macrophages constitutively reside in the respiratory tracts of pigs and humans. An in vivo role of alveolar macrophages in defending against influenza viruses in mice infected with a reassorted influenza virus, 1918 HA/NA:Tx/91, was reported, but there has been no report on an in vivo role of alveolar macrophages in a natural host such as a pig using currently circulating human influenza virus. Here we show that in vivo depletion of alveolar macrophages in pigs by dichloromethylene diphosphonate (MDPCL2) treatment results in 40% mortality when pigs are infected with currently circulating human H1N1 influenza viruses, while none of the infected control pigs died. All infected pigs depleted of alveolar macrophages suffered from more severe respiratory signs than infected control pigs. Induction of tumor necrosis factor alpha in the infected pigs depleted of alveolar macrophages was significantly lower than that in the lungs of infected control pigs, and the induction of interleukin-10, an immunosuppressive cytokine, significantly increased in the lungs of infected pigs depleted of alveolar macrophages compared to infected control pigs. When we measured antibody titers and CD8(+) T lymphocytes expressing gamma interferon (IFN-gamma), lower antibody titers and a lower percentage of CD8(+) T lymphocytes expressing IFN-gamma were detectable in MDPCL2-treated infected pigs than in phosphate-buffered saline- and liposome-treated and infected pigs. Taken together, our findings suggest that alveolar macrophages are essential for controlling H1N1 influenza viruses in pigs.  相似文献

Transmission of the microsporidian Nosema kingi to offspring of Drosophila willistoni during copulation was investigated. Offspring from matings of infected females and non-infected males, infected males and non-infected females, and both infected females and males were parasitized with N. kingi. 28% of the offspring were infected when the parents mated immediately after exposure to the parasite. However, 43--93% of the offspring were infected with the microsporidian when copulation was delayed 2 weeks post-infection.  相似文献

Electron microscopic examination showed microtubular structures in FL cells infected with all 18 strains of HSV-2 examined, but not in cells infected with 9 strains of HSV-1. These structures were also detected in other cultured cells (Vero and Earle's L cells) infected with HSV-2, and also in vivo in cells, such as neuronal cells of the spinal ganglia and liver cells, of one-day-old suckling mice (DDD strain) infected with this type of virus. Thus the microtubules were consistently detected in cells productively infected with HSV-2. No other herpesviruses so far examined produced microtubular structures such as those observed in HSV-2 infected cells.  相似文献

Red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, colonies were infected horizontally by introducing live brood (mainly larvae and pupae) infected with Thelohania solenopsae. Live, infected brood introduced into uninfected colonies were adopted and raised to adulthood instead of being executed by the recipient colony. Introductions of infected larvae with uninfected pupae, which eclose into adult worker caste fire ants, resulted in an 80% infection rate of the inoculated colonies. Infections from introductions of infected pupae with uninfected larvae resulted in a 37.5% infection of inoculated colonies. Infections were also detected in 11.6 and 3.7% of the adult worker caste ants that eclosed from uninfected large larvae and pupae, respectively, that were held with infected adult workers. Microscopic examination of infected brood revealed sporoblasts and large numbers of spores of T. solenopsae in S. invicta pupae.  相似文献

L929 mouse fibroblast cells and J774 macrophage-like cells are both susceptible to persistent infection with the Q fever agent Coxiella burnetti. Previously this laboratory has shown that persistently infected cell populations multiply with unaltered generation times or cell cycle progression. It has also been reported by others and us that highly infected cells typically exhibit one large parasite-containing vacuole. We now report that lightly and heavily infected cells are capable of division and in the process segregate the parasite-containing vacuole into one of the emerging daughter cells; the companion daughter cell emerges parasite-free. This asymmetric division of infected cells, revealed via photomicrography of stained cells, accounts for the appearance of uninfected cells within persistently infected host cell populations that were previously 100% infected. Some of the persistently infected L929 populations were maintained in culture for over two years without the addition of normal cells.  相似文献

Identifying the cells that can be infected with HIV in vivo and thus potentially persist as latent reservoirs is of high priority. Here, we report the major infected cells in a chronically simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)‐infected macaque that developed AIDS and encephalitis. A majority of the infected cells were detected as non‐proliferating resting cells. SIV‐infected non‐proliferating resting cells were found to be playing an important role in viral pathogenesis, persistence, or reservoir formation.  相似文献

Phytophthora infestans infects King Edward potato tubers more readily through inoculated eyes than through lenticels, but more lenticels than eyes became infected when whole tubers were sprayed with inoculum. The resistance of lenticels but not of eyes increased as tubers aged. The spores did not infect through intact periderm. The likelihood of tubers on plants grown in pots becoming infected by sporangial suspension poured on to the soil increased the nearer the tubers were to the soil surface, the stem, or the side of the pot. Naturally infected tubers, and those sprayed with sporangial suspension, had most eyes infected at the rose end, and most lenticels infected on the middle region of the tuber. Of naturally infected tubers, on which the site of infection could be identified, most were infected through eyes at the rose end.  相似文献

Eight dogs were experimentally infected with Sarcocystis by oral inoculation of cardiac muscle from naturally infected cattle. The infected dogs commenced discharging of sporocysts in the feces after 10 to 12 days of inoculation, and continued until 20 and 35 days after inoculation. Three dogs were reinfected with cardiac muscle from the naturally infected cattle. Sporocysts reappeared in the feces on 12 to 13 days after reinfection. Sarcocystis sporocysts collected from the experimentally infected dogs were fed to each of the two 30-day-old Korean native calves. The infected calves remained clinically normal, except for the high fever (> or = 40 degrees C) and decreased hematocrit values on day 30 to 40 post inoculation. Muscular cysts of Sarcocystis were found from infected calves on day 40 post inoculation. Proliferative forms of Sarcocystis were also observed in the muscle of infected calves. These results suggest that the Sarcocystis cruzi found in Korean native cattle has a 2-host life cycle with dogs as the definitive host and Korean native calves as the intermediate host.  相似文献
