Why Don't Anthropologists Like Children?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Few major works in anthropology focus specifically on children, a curious state of affairs given that virtually all contemporary anthropology is based on the premise that culture is learned, not inherited. Although children have a remarkable and undisputed capacity for learning generally, and learning culture in particular, in significant measure anthropology has shown little interest in them and their lives. This article examines the reasons for this lamentable lacunae and offers theoretical and empirical reasons for repudiating it. Resistance to child-focused scholarship, it is argued, is a byproduct of (1) an impoverished view of cultural learning that overestimates the role adults play and underestimates the contribution that children make to cultural reproduction, and (2) a lack of appreciation of the scope and force of children's culture, particularly in shaping adult culture. The marginalization of children and childhood, it is proposed, has obscured our understanding of how cultural forms emerge and why they are sustained. Two case studies, exploring North American children's beliefs about social contamination, illustrate these points. Analyses of children's participation in cultural practices typically focus on the ways in which dimensions of activities shape the nature of children's participation and learning. In contrast, our concern in this article is to understand how children, in their participation, transform cultural practices. We use Saxe's (1991) emergent goals framework to illustrate how the mathematical problems that emerge in children's play of Monopoly are interwoven with children's developing competencies and social interactions.  相似文献

This article examines differences in aggression between two Zapotec communities in Oaxaca, Mexico. An ethological study of three- to eight-year-old children (N = 48) reveals statistically significant intercommunity differences in children's serious and play aggression, corresponding to ethnographically observed intercommunity differences in adult behavior. The parallels between adult and children's conduct within the communities support the conclusion that different social learning environments contribute to the maintenance across generations of divergent ideologies, values, and patterns of social interaction related to violence or peacefulness. Social learning and socialization processes also can be viewed as interacting with economic, historical, and ideological influences. The findings suggest that studies of violence that neglect social learning influences may be providing only partial explanations.  相似文献

This study examines the role of teachers' expectations in the association between children's socio-economic background and achievement outcomes. Furthermore, the role of children's ethnicity in moderating this mediated relation is investigated. In the present study, 3,948 children from kindergarten are examined. Data are analysed by means of structural equation modeling. First, results show that teachers' expectations mediate the relation between children's SES and their later language and math achievement, after controlling for children's ethnicity, prior achievement and gender. This result indicates that teachers may exacerbate individual differences between children. Second, children's ethnicity moderates the mediation effect of teachers' expectations with respect to math outcomes. The role of teachers' expectations in mediating the relation between SES and math outcomes is stronger for majority children than for minority children.  相似文献

Taller children perform better on average on tests of cognitive achievement, in part because of differences in early-life health and net nutrition. Recent research documenting this height-achievement slope has primarily focused on rich countries. Using the India Human Development Survey, a representative sample of 40,000 households which matches anthropometric data to learning tests, this paper documents a height-achievement slope among Indian children. The height-achievement slope in India is more than twice as steep as in the U.S. An earlier survey interviewed some IHDS children's households eleven years before. Including matched early-life control variables reduces the apparent effect of height, but does not eliminate it; water, sanitation, and hygiene may be particularly important for children's outcomes. Being one standard deviation taller is associated with being 5 percentage points more likely to be able to write, a slope that falls only to 3.4 percentage points controlling for a long list of contemporary and early-life conditions.  相似文献

Children with a 22q11 deletion versus children with a speech-language impairment and learning disability: behavior during primary school age: Common behavioral features described in children with the Velo-Cardio-Facial syndrome (VCFS) (del 22q11) are problems with attention and concentration, extremes in behavior and social problems, especially in relationship with peers. At present, it is unclear whether these behavioral manifestations are directly related to the chromosomal anomaly or related to other manifestations of the syndrome such as developmental delay and speech-language delay. This study describes for the first time the behavior of young primary school aged children with a del22q11 compared to a control group of children matched for age, sex and mental level, with similar developmental problems (speech-language impairment plus learning disability: SLI + LD) but without a del22q11 or any other known genetic condition. Parents and teachers evaluated the children's behavior with standardized questionnaires (CBCL; TRF). Results indicate that most of the behaviors are similar across both groups. The only differences found are in the field of and . Children with a del22q11 have a stronger tendency to withdraw from others, whereas children with a SLI+LD seem to be more aggressive.  相似文献

A longitudinal sample of 21-year-old Australians from Anglo-Australian, Greek and Southern Italian families was used to examine relationships of children's cognitive performance, family learning environments, adolescents' perceptions of family learning contexts, and measures of young adults' social status attainment. Generally, the findings using a regression approach indicated that there were ethnic group differences in the relations between parents' academic socialisation, children's cognitive performance, and measures of young adults' social status attainment. The results also showed that in each ethnic group, adolescents' perceptions of parents' support for learning had strong associations with young adults' status attainment.  相似文献

Humans and objects, and thus social interactions about objects, exist within space. Words direct listeners' attention to specific regions of space. Thus, a strong correspondence exists between where one looks, one's bodily orientation, and what one sees. This leads to further correspondence with what one remembers. Here, we present data suggesting that children use associations between space and objects and space and words to link words and objects--space binds labels to their referents. We tested this claim in four experiments, showing that the spatial consistency of where objects are presented affects children's word learning. Next, we demonstrate that a process model that grounds word learning in the known neural dynamics of spatial attention, spatial memory, and associative learning can capture the suite of results reported here. This model also predicts that space is special, a prediction supported in a fifth experiment that shows children do not use color as a cue to bind words and objects. In a final experiment, we ask whether spatial consistency affects word learning in naturalistic word learning contexts. Children of parents who spontaneously keep objects in a consistent spatial location during naming interactions learn words more effectively. Together, the model and data show that space is a powerful tool that can effectively ground word learning in social contexts.  相似文献

Background Children with oppositional defiant symptoms (ODS) are highly related to parental stress, especially in mothers. This study is the first to investigate the quality of life (QOL) of mothers of children with ODS in a community sample.Methods Randomly selected mothers of children attending an elementary school were contacted, and 387 who completed the questionnaire participated in this study. The children's ODS status was determined by the maternal rating of the Chinese Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham rating scale, version IV. The mothers' QOL was estimated by maternal reports from the World Health Organization Quality of Life - BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) instrument. The relationship between the children's ODS status and maternal QOL was examined by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with the participants' sociodemographic factors as covariables.Results Sixty-three children, mostly boys, met the screening criteria for ODS. The positive screening rate for ODS was 16.49%. The children's ODS status was a significant predictor for the maternal physical capacity, psychological wellbeing and environment domains of QOL. Mothers of children with ODS who rented a house were younger and had lower education levels and worse QOL in all domains.Conclusion A high positive screening rate for ODS children in the elementary school and a relationship between poor maternal QOL and children's ODS were found in this study. Routine screening for ODS in children and mental health services for these children and their mothers are warranted.  相似文献

Superstitious behaviors have been studied extensively in adults and non-human species, but have not been systematically assessed in children. The purpose of the study is to develop and validate a method of measuring superstitious tendencies in young children based on an established learning paradigm. In two studies, 3-5-year-olds tapped a computer to make a target image appear. On half the trials, a sensory stimulus appeared at a random time before the target. Superstitious tendencies were measured by change in tapping during the presence of the sensory stimulus. Children's proportion of tapping increased during the presence of the sensory stimulus, indicating that children associated the sensory stimulus with the appearance of the target image, even though the two stimuli were not causally related. Implications for the development of superstitious tendencies and children's causal knowledge are discussed.  相似文献

Lead poisoning is one of the most significant environmental health threats which children face. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between the blood lead level (BLL) of children and environmental pollution, as well as the effect of BLL on children's heath, in the biggest city in south-west China. A questionnaire survey was administered to 3,624 children's (6 months-7 years old) guardian in urban Chengdu from 2007 to 2009, collecting data on inhabited environment, living habits, and health status. All blood samples were collected for BLL test when the children came to the hospital. The analysis was conducted in West China Second University Hospital, Chengdu, China in December, 2009. A total of 3,624 children were included. The mean BLL was 62.31 μg/L. Three hundred thirty-three (9.2%) of 3,624 children's BLL were above 100 μg/L. Taking Chinese medicinal herbs usually, puffed foods, and substitutes of breast milk were risk factors (P < 0.05).The study shows that Chinese children's lead poisoning prevention and treatment lags far behind developed countries. Owing to their developing cognitive abilities and their limited knowledge about the biological basis of illness, children often have less expertise at disease avoidance than adults. However, affective reactions to contaminants through the acquisition of disgust and the social and cultural transmissions of knowledge about contamination and contagion provide impetus for children to learn effective disease-avoidant behaviours early in their development. In this article, we review the ontogenetic development of knowledge about contamination and contagion with particular attention to the role of socialization and culture. Together with their emerging cognitive abilities and affective reactions to contaminants, informal and formal cultural learning shape children's knowledge about disease. Through this process, the perceptual cues of contamination are linked to threats of disease outcomes and can act as determinants of disease-avoidant behaviours.  相似文献

Although number words are common in everyday speech, learning their meanings is an arduous, drawn-out process for most children, and the source of this delay has long been the subject of inquiry. Children begin by identifying the few small numerosities that can be named without counting, and this has prompted further debate over whether there is a specific, capacity-limited system for representing these small sets, or whether smaller and larger sets are both represented by the same system. Here we present a formal, computational analysis of number learning that offers a possible solution to both puzzles. This analysis indicates that once the environment and the representational demands of the task of learning to identify sets are taken into consideration, a continuous system for learning, representing and discriminating set-sizes can give rise to effective discontinuities in processing. At the same time, our simulations illustrate how typical prenominal linguistic constructions ("there are three balls") structure information in a way that is largely unhelpful for discrimination learning, while suggesting that postnominal constructions ("balls, there are three") will facilitate such learning. A training-experiment with three-year olds confirms these predictions, demonstrating that rapid, significant gains in numerical understanding and competence are possible given appropriately structured postnominal input. Our simulations and results reveal how discrimination learning tunes children's systems for representing small sets, and how its capacity-limits result naturally out of a mixture of the learning environment and the increasingly complex task of discriminating and representing ever-larger number sets. They also explain why children benefit so little from the training that parents and educators usually provide. Given the efficacy of our intervention, the ease with which it can be implemented, and the large body of research showing how early numerical ability predicts later educational outcomes, this simple discovery may have far-reaching consequences.  相似文献

Network analysis has demonstrated that systems ranging from social networks to electric power grids often involve a small world structure-with local clustering but global ac cess. Critically, small world structure has also been shown to characterize adult human semantic networks. Moreover, the connectivity pattern of these mature networks is consistent with lexical growth processes in which children add new words to their vocabulary based on the structure of the language-learning environment. However, thus far, there is no direct evidence that a child's individual semantic network structure is associated with their early language learning. Here we show that, while typically developing children's early networks show small world structure as early as 15 months and with as few as 55 words, children with language delay (late talkers) have this structure to a smaller degree. This implicates a maladaptive bias in word acquisition for late talkers, potentially indicating a preference for "oddball" words. The findings provide the first evidence of a link between small-world connectivity and lexical development in individual children.  相似文献

There is insufficient research on the direct effects of food advertising on children's diet and diet-related health, particularly in non-experimental settings. We employ a nationally-representative sample from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Survey–Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K) and the Nielsen Company data on spot television advertising of cereals, fast food restaurants and soft drinks to children across the top 55 designated-market areas to estimate the relation between exposure to food advertising on television and children's food consumption and body weight. Our results suggest that soft drink and fast food television advertising is associated with increased consumption of soft drinks and fast food among elementary school children (Grade 5). Exposure to 100 incremental TV ads for sugar-sweetened carbonated soft drinks during 2002–2004 was associated with a 9.4% rise in children's consumption of soft drinks in 2004. The same increase in exposure to fast food advertising was associated with a 1.1% rise in children's consumption of fast food. There was no detectable link between advertising exposure and average body weight, but fast food advertising was significantly associated with body mass index for overweight and obese children (≥85th BMI percentile), revealing detectable effects for a vulnerable group of children. Exposure to advertising for calorie-dense nutrient-poor foods may increase overall consumption of unhealthy food categories.  相似文献

目的:探讨不同出生体重对学龄期儿童生命质量及影响因素.方法:采用Achendach儿童行为量表、儿少主观生命质量问卷及自制儿童生命质量影响因素问卷,对台湾基隆市8-11岁儿童进行调查,依研究对象按照不同出生体重分组并进行分析.结果:在所调查的350名儿童中,出现行为问题的儿童有21.14%(74/350).使用Logistic回归检验发现行为问题与父亲与主要养育人的教育程度、受试儿童是否对家庭造成心理负担及经济负担四个方面有密切关系.对不同出生体重儿童主观生命质量满意度的分析结果提示:低出生体重儿与正常出生体重儿相比,在生命质量中的情感成份满意度较低(F=2.601;P=0.028);而巨大儿在认知成份满意度较正常出生体重儿差(F=3.189;P=0.012),且多元逐步回归发现:主要养育人的教育程度与母亲每周与孩子相处时间的长短是影响儿童主观生命质量满意度的因素.结论:低出生体重儿生命质量的情感成份满意度较低.而巨大儿生命质量的认知成份满意度较差,出生体重是影响儿童生命质量的因素.  相似文献

This research examines whether family disruptions (i.e., divorces and separation) contribute to children's weight problems. The sample consists of 7,299 observations for 2,333 children, aged 5-14, over the 1986-2006 period, from a US representative sample from the Child and Young Adult Survey accompanying the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY). The study uses individual-fixed-effects models in a longitudinal framework to compare children's BMI and weight problems before and after a disruption. Furthermore, besides doing a before-after comparison for children, the study also estimates the effects at various periods relative to the disruption in order to examine whether children are affected before the disruption and whether any effects change as time passes from the disruption, as some effects may be temporary or slow to develop. Despite having a larger sample than the previous studies, the results provide no evidence that, on average, children's BMI and BMI percentile scores (measured with continuous outcomes) are affected before the disruption, after the disruption, and as time passes from the disruption, relative to a baseline period a few years before the disruption. However, children experiencing a family disruption do have an increased risk of obesity (having a BMI percentile score of 95 or higher) in the two years leading up to the disruption as well as after the disruption, and as time passes from the disruption.  相似文献

The sera obtained at 6 samplings between June 1981 and May 1982 from 30 children in a children's home were tested for neutralizing antibodies to coxsackieviruses B1 through B5, echovirus serotypes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 19, 24, 30 and to enterovirus type 71. Another group of examined children comprised 19 individuals from the children's home and 63 children from families who enrolled as participants of a summer camp recreation. Samples of their sera were obtained at the beginning and the end of camping in July and August of 1981. Virus isolations were attempted in 150 stool specimens collected at various times during the observation period, and in specimens of summer camp swimming pool water collected 2-3 times a week. Overall, 10 strains of enterovirus (CB2, E2, E19, E24) were isolated from stool, but none from swimming pool water. Serologically, fourfold or greater increases in titre of antibody to at least one of the enteroviruses tested were observed 17 children, of whom 4 children showed antibody titre increases simultaneously to two enterovirus serotypes. None of the present viruses showed a tendency to mass spread. Some of the examined children showed the presence of serum antibody to enterovirus before its isolation from stool. Eight of the ten children positive for enterovirus in stool did not react by significant increases in titre of antibodies. Enteroviruses were more frequently isolated in children's home in autumn than in summer camp. Clinically, all virologically or serologically demonstrated enteroviral infections were asymptomatic. Children's home children had a significantly higher prevalence of antibodies to enteroviruses than children from families. Presumably, asymptomatic infections with nonpolio enteroviruses among children appear to be far more frequent than the results of neutralization tests in the study indicated. Moreover, enteroviruses may apparently circulate among humans who are seropositive for the respective enterovirus serotype.  相似文献

Varicella spread from a child with zoster to a total of 3 susceptible infants in another room in a children's ward, although they had been strictly isolated. To prevent spread of the disease, the staffs and patients were doing their own washing and no source of natural infection could be found. The cases indicate that it is difficult to predict nosocomial varicella infection or to prevent spread of the disease simply by isolation in a children's ward. A total of 11 other children without history of varicella in the ward were given live varicella vaccine before or immediately after this event. None of these children developed symptoms of varicella and all the susceptible children who were vaccinated showed an antibody response.  相似文献
