The course of behavioral and vaginal estrus and patterns of circulating estrogens were followed in free-living European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) after their emergence from hibernation. Normally mating females were compared to a second group in an area where males had been removed from the population before female emergence. Both groups showed vaginal estrus, but the patterns differed. Mating shortened vaginal estrus to a 3-day period compared to 8 days in unmated females. The extent (cell number) of cell cornification during estrus and the cellular components (percentage distribution) of metestrus did not differ between the two groups. Females in the area without males had significantly higher estrogen levels during estrus and metestrus compared to those in the control area. European ground squirrels were found to be monestrous, as none of the unmated females reentered estrus after metor diestrus was detected. The prolongation of vaginal estrus in unmated females can be viewed as either a physiological inevitability or an adaptation to low mate availability. The extension is still relatively short compared to other sciurid species and perhaps a product of constraints producing a strict time frame for reproduction.  相似文献

The frequency demultiplication hypothesis (FDH) posits that circannual rhythms are generated from circadian cycles by frequency transformation to the lower-frequency rhythm. To test the FDH, we determined the periods of the circannual body mass and estrous cycles of golden-mantled ground squirrels with circadian locomotor activity rhythms entrained to 23-, 24-, or 25-hr days (T-cycles). Circannual period length did not differ among squirrels entrained to the different T-cycles; intergroup ranges were 298-314 days and 303-312 days, respectively, for body mass and estrus. These results are not consistent with the FDH and suggest instead that separate mechanisms generate circadian and circannual rhythms. In ground squirrels the circannual system influences circadian organization, but a reciprocal influence of circadian on circannual rhythms has yet to be demonstrated.  相似文献

Summary Nutrient requirements of adult, nonreproductive, omnivorous antelope ground squirrels (Ammospermophilus leucurus) were compared with the nutritional value of their food resources. It was found that nutrient constraints would be important factors in ground squirrel feeding ecology primarily in winter. Potentially important constraints were the requirement for water and nitrogen, and a digestive requirement that average dry matter digestibility of the diet exceed ca. 50%. An unlikely constraint was the requirement for any specific mineral. A linear programming model was used to determine potential diets ground squirrels could consume which satisfied these nutritional requirements and also the ground squirrel's daily energy requirements. During spring ground squirrels could be strict herbivores, but during winter before winter rains ground squirrels had to eat some arthropods to satisfy water requirements.These ground squirrels are not energy maximizers because they spend only one third of their activity period feeding and do not accumulate excess energy as fat. Thus, optimum diets were predicted for winter and spring assuming the goal of feeding time minimization. The model correctly predicted that in wintertime ground squirrels would be primarily granivorous but would consume about 20% arthropods, and that they would switch to herbivory in springtime. Ground squirrels, however, selected a wider dietary range than predicted in both winter and spring. Possible reasons for this discrepancy include an inappropriate assumption that ground squirrels forage for food classes nonsimultaneously, and the possibility that ground squirrels employ sampling as part of their foraging behavior.  相似文献

As small arid-zone mammals, Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris) are unusual in being diurnally active. It is postulated that they remain active during the day by using their parasol-like tails to shade their bodies whilst foraging. However, no studies have continuously measured body temperature to determine the effect of using the tail as a parasol, relative to other thermoregulatory behaviours, such as burrow retreat. We caught four free-ranging Cape ground squirrels (673 ± 36 g) and surgically implanted miniature temperature-sensitive data loggers into their abdomens, to record body temperature every 5 min to an accuracy of 0.04 °C, before they were released back into their home range and observed for two weeks. Mean daily peak black globe temperature was 41 °C, and daily peak body temperature reached 40 °C. Ground squirrels raised their tails significantly more often at globe temperatures above 30 °C, but raising the tail did not decrease body temperature, nor prevent body temperature rising. Ground squirrels retreated to burrows, at 18 °C, significantly more often at high body temperatures and body temperature dropped 1–2 °C before re-emergence. We believe that the tail was raised to provide thermal comfort during high solar radiation exposure, and that burrow retreat was employed to dissipate a heat load and remain active diurnally.  相似文献

Entrainment of circannual rhythms of body mass and reproduction was monitored for 3 years in female golden-mantled ground squirrels maintained in a simulated natural photoperiod. Both pinealectomized and pineal-intact squirrels generated circannual rhythms of body mass and estrus, but only the intact animals entrained these rhythms to a period of 365 days. In the second and third years after treatment, the period of the body mass rhythm was significantly shorter than 365 days for pinealectomized squirrels, and variance in tau among these animals was significantly greater than for intact squirrels. A similar pattern was evident in the rhythm of reproduction, which was phase-disrupted in pinealectomized squirrels but entrained in intacts. Seasonal changes in duration of nocturnal melatonin secretion by the pineal appear to be necessary to produce phase-delays required to entrain the circannual clock to a period of 12 months.  相似文献

The kinetic properties of glucokinase (GLK) from the liver of active and hibernating ground squirrels Spermophilus undulatus have been studied. Entrance of ground squirrels into hibernation from their active state is accompanied by a sharp decrease in blood glucose (Glc) level (from 14 to 2.9 mM) and with a significant (7-fold) decrease of GLK activity in the liver cytoplasm. Preparations of native GLK practically devoid of other molecular forms of hexokinase were obtained from the liver of active and hibernating ground squirrels. The dependence of GLK activity upon Glc concentration for the enzyme from active ground squirrel liver showed a pronounced sigmoid character (Hill coefficient, h = 1.70 and S 0.5 = 6.23 mM; the experiments were conducted at 25°C in the presence of enzyme stabilizers, K+ and DTT). The same dependence of enzyme activity on Glc concentration was found for GLK from rat liver. However, on decreasing the temperature to 2°C (simulation of hibernation conditions), this dependency became almost hyperbolic (h = 1.16) and GLK affinity for substrate was reduced (S 0.5 = 23 mM). These parameters for hibernating ground squirrels (body temperature 5°C) at 25°C were found to be practically equal to the corresponding values obtained for GLK from the liver of active animals (h = 1.60, S 0.5 = 9.0 mM, respectively); at 2°C sigmoid character was less expressed and affinity for Glc was drastically decreased (h = 1.20, S 0.5 = 45 mM). The calculations of GLK activity in the liver of hibernating ground squirrels based on enzyme kinetic characteristics and seasonal changes in blood Glc concentrations have shown that GLK activity in the liver of hibernating ground squirrels is decreased about 5500-fold.  相似文献

The ovaries of 20 ground squirrels (Citellus citellus L.) were studied after spring arousal, while the animals were in the stage of estrus. The membrana granulosa of the preovulatory folic was luteinized. Epithelial cords were observed in the ovarial stroma. Cells in different stages of differentiation were found in the cords. For the first time nucleoli-like bodies in the nucleus and in the interstitial cells of the ovary of the ground squirrels. Probably, these nucleoli-like bodies played a definite role in the process of membrane formation during the cell differentiation. The NADH2 reductase and 3 beta-hydroxy-delta 5-steroid dehydrogenase activity confirmed that the process of differentiation of the interstitial cells was still in an initial stage. The findings were compared with the changes that took place during the puberty period.  相似文献

Summary Ground squirrels, show circannual cycles with periods normally less than a year when kept under laboratory conditions. The way in which environmental factors synchronize these cycles with the geophysical year under natural conditions is not known. We tested the possibility that cold temperatures can cause long-term phase delays in circannual cycles of thirteen-lined ground squirrels.Two groups of animals were kept in the cold (4 °C) for either 8.5 or 13 months, after which they were returned to the warm (21 °C) and kept there until they had completed at least one additional cycle. A third group was kept in the warm for the entire experiment. Most of the males in the cold room groups became arrested in the spring phase of their cycles while they were in cold. When returned to the warm, these males resumed cycling. When animals showed prolonged spring phases, their cycles were phase-delayed and continued to reflect this delay even after they were returned to the warm. Both body weight cycles and molt cycles were delayed. In contrast to the males in the cold room, none of the females in the cold room groups and none of the warm room animals of either sex showed this response.Our results demonstrate that cold temperatures can phase-delay both body weight and molt cycles and that the spring phase is a critical stage in this effect. We suggest that spring temperatures are largely responsible for the seasonal synchronization of circannual cycles in ground squirrels and are, therefore, a possible Zeitgeber for these cycles.  相似文献

In two species of hibernators, hamsters and ground squirrels, erythrocytes were collected by heart puncture and the K content of the cells of hibernating individuals was compared with that of awake individuals. The K concentration of hamsters did not decline significantly during each bout of hibernation (maximum period of 5 days) but in long-term bouts in ground squirrels (i.e. more than 5 days) the K concentration of cells dropped significantly. When ground squirrels were allowed to rewarm the K content of cells rose toward normal values within a few hours. Erythrocytes of both hamsters and ground squirrels lose K more slowly than those of guinea pigs (nonhibernators) when stored in vitro for up to 10 days at 5°C. In ground squirrels the rate of loss of K during storage is the same as in vivo during hibernation, and stored cells taken from hibernating ground squirrels also lose K at the same rate. The rate of loss of K from guinea pig cells corresponded with that predicted from passive diffusion unopposed by transport. The actual rate of loss of K from ground squirrel cells was slower than such a predicted rate but corresponded with it when glucose was omitted from the storage medium or ouabain was added to it. Despite the slight loss of K that may occur in hibernation, therefore, the cells of hibernators are more cold adapted than those of a nonhibernating mammal, and this adaptation depends in part upon active transport.  相似文献

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus) have a single annual mating season in Michigan, beginning shortly after their spring emergence from hibernation. Captive females were studied during a 3-year period to determine relations among time of removal from the coldroom, vaginal estrus, and mating behavior. Following a 7-month period females spent in a coldroom, vaginal lavages were taken daily to monitor changes in estrous condition. Females removed from the coldroom about when free-living animals emerge from hibernation were in vaginal estrus within 24-48 hr and had an initial period of persistent estrus (ca. 3 weeks), followed by briefer (less than 1 week) and more sporadic estrous periods. Females left in the coldroom 3 weeks longer than normal had significantly briefer initial periods of vaginal estrus after being removed from the coldroom. Similarly, virgin Yearlings and virgin 2-Year-Olds had significantly briefer initial periods of estrus than nonvirgin Adults (greater than or equal to 2 years old). In 1985, eight of eight females paired with males mated within the first week after removal from the coldroom and subsequently produced litters. Mated females remained in vaginal diestrus from within a few days of mating until after parturition. In contrast, unmated females remained in prolonged vaginal estrus during this period. Females first paired with males 3 weeks after being taken from the coldroom failed to mate. In 1986, five of six females first paired with males 2 weeks after being removed from the coldroom similarly failed to mate. However, five of six females did mate that were removed from the coldroom 10 days after those in the previously described group and paired with a male 4 days after removal. This first report of reliable mating behavior in captive thirteen-lined ground squirrels should facilitate subsequent analysis of reproductive patterns in this species.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of local environment on the demography and population dynamics of arctic ground squirrels ( Spermophilus parryii plesius ) by comparing reproduction, survival, and population trends of squirrels living in low elevation boreal forest and high elevation alpine tundra sites in southwestern Yukon Territory, Canada. Contrary to the trend for most birds and mammals, reproduction was significantly lower at the lower elevation and females living at higher elevation did not delay the age at which they first reproduced. Even though survival in the boreal forest was lower in summer than in the alpine, it was higher over winter so annual adult female survival was similar between sites.
Sensitivity analysis of model parameters revealed that in the forest, population growth rate (λ) was most sensitive to small changes in adult active season survival whereas for the alpine population, λ was most sensitive to changes in juvenile winter survival. In their respective habitats, these parameters also showed high year to year variation and thus contributed greatly to the population trends observed. Even though ground squirrels persisted in the boreal forest, the measured demographic rates indicate the forest was sink habitat (λ<1) and may have relied on nearby grassy meadows for immigrants. In contrast, the alpine habitat maintained a ground squirrel population in the absence of immigration (λ=1).
The variation in demographic rates between ground squirrels living at high and low elevation may arise from phenotypic responses of squirrels to different habitat structure. Arctic ground squirrels rely on sight to detect predators from a safe distance, and the boreal forest, with its lower visibility and higher predator density, appears to be suboptimal habitat.  相似文献

(1) We examined relationships between ground squirrel activity and operative temperature (Te) in two habitats in southwestern Idaho, USA to determine how activity patterns are tied to environmental conditions and how habitat can mediate the thermal environment. (2) Midday environmental conditions were too hot throughout much of the active season for Piute ground squirrels to remain active in a grassland habitat. (3) Ground squirrels were most active in grassland at a Te of approximately 25°C and showed a strong bimodal activity pattern during the latter half of their active season (after 15 April). (4) Suitable aboveground microclimates existed throughout most of the season in sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) habitats and ground squirrels remained active throughout the day. (5) The availability of cooler microhabitats may make sagebrush a better habitat than grassland for Piute ground squirrels, especially during the latter portion of the active season and in hotter than normal years.  相似文献

Although territorial defense is a common form of reproductivecompetition among male vertebrates, the exact reproductiveconsequences of this behavior are often poorly understood.To explore relationships between territoriality and reproductivesuccess in a nongroup-living mammal, we quantified patterns of space use, mating success, and fertilization success formales in a free-living population of arctic ground squirrels(Spermophilus parryii plesius). Because litters of this speciesare sired almost exclusively by a female's first mate, we predictedthat territory ownership would be associated with first accessto estrous females. During the 2-week period when mating occurred,each male in the study population attempted to defend a distinctportion of the habitat, although the success of this defensevaried among individuals. Twenty-six of 28 females monitoredmated with the male on whose territory they resided. However,the majority of females observed throughout estrus (65%; n= 20) also mated with at least one other male, indicating thatterritory ownership was not associated with exclusive accessto females. In contrast, territory ownership was significantly associated with first access to estrous females; 20 (71.4%)of 28 females mated first with the male on whose territorythey resided. In this regard, the behavior of S. parryii plesiusparallels that of socially monogamous birds in which territorialdefense by males functions to deter extrapair copulations byfemales. Although territorial defense represents an important component of male reproductive success in arctic ground squirrels,other aspects of male behavior (e.g., the ability to dominateagonistic interactions on the day of a female's estrus) arealso critical. We suggest that future studies of vertebratemating systems will benefit by viewing such defense as onlyone of multiple axes along which conspecific males compete foraccess to females.  相似文献

The circadian systems of two burrowing rodents, the normothermic diurnal antelope ground squirrel (Ammospermophilus leucurus) and the heterothermic nocturnal Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) were compared with respect to entrainment by temperature cycles. Both species were subjected to the same ambient temperature (Ta) cycles with amplitudes between 4 and 12ºC at constant illuminations (100 and 0.05 lux in squirrels; 1.0 lux in hamsters). Wheel running activity was continuously measured. There was considerable interindividual variation in the daily pattern of wheel-running activity and in the ability to entrain to Ta cycles of the same amplitude in both species. The activity rhythms of about 33 to 67% of the animals of the two species entrained to Ta cycles with amplitudes of 6 to 12ºC. One of six squirrels and one of nine hamsters even entrained to Ta cycles of 4ºC. In the antelope ground squirrels, activity occurred predominantly in the cooler phase of the Ta cycle, whereas hamsters were mainly active during the warmer phase. In some squirrels, the activity rhythms were split in two main components which were both entrained to the cooler fraction of the Ta cycle, sometimes with additional (masking) activity during the warmer fraction (above 30ºC). The results do not support the earlier view that temperature cycles affect the circadian systems of heterothermic mammals, including hibernators, more strongly than those of normothermic species. It is suggested that behavioral and physiological adjustments to the environmental conditions play an important role for mammalian circadian systems to respond to temperature changes as a zeitgeber.  相似文献

1. Previous studies have suggested that elevated ketone levels are associated with increased survival time in rodents exposed to hypoxia. In this study the association between whole blood BHB (beta-hydroxybutyrate) and hypoxic survival time was investigated in hibernating and non-hibernating ground squirrels and in rats. 2. Non-hibernating ground squirrels and rats were exposed to hypoxia (4.5% O2). One hundred per cent of ground squirrels survived 1 hr of hypoxia vs 20% of rats. 3. Ketone levels were significantly higher in ground squirrels than rats during hypoxia, and rats surviving the longest had the highest ketone levels. 4. When hibernation was induced in ground squirrels there was a significant increase in beta-hydroxy-butyrate from 0.45 to 1.6 mM (P = 0.0005). 5. Ground squirrel heart mitochondrial respiratory control ratios and ATP synthesis rates indicated no preferential ketone utilization which might suggest a possible extramitochondrial role of BHB during hypoxia. 6. We conclude that elevated blood BHB levels are associated with increased hypoxic survival and they may have evolved in response to life-threatening hypoxia as experienced during hibernation.  相似文献

Dolichyl pyrophosphate N-acetyl[14C]glucosamine was synthesized after incubation of liver microsomes from hibernating ground squirrels with UDP-N-acetyl[14C )glucosamine. The radioactivity of glycolipid formed by liver microsomes from hibernating ground squirrels was about 2-fold greater than by liver microsomes from active animals. Addition of exogenous dolichyl phosphate to the incubation mixture increased the formation of dolichyl pyrophosphate N-acetyl[14C]glucosamine by microsomes from both active and hibernating ground squirrels about 6 times. Liver microsomes from hibernating ground squirrels converted dolichyl pyrophosphate N-acetyl[14C]glucosamine into dolichyl pyrophosphate N,N'-diacetyl[14C]chitobiose in the presence of unlabelled UDP-N-acetylglucosamine. This conversion was maximal at 1.0 M concentration of unlabelled UDP-N-acetylglucosamine. The level of dolichyl phosphate assessed by the level of dolichyl pyrophosphate N-acetylglucosamine formation was nearly 2 times greater in liver microsomes from hibernating ground squirrels than from active animals.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 71 Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) collected in 12 locations in western Canada were assayed for restriction-site variation with 10 endonucleases. Five of these endonucleases revealed variant patterns, and the composite genotypes were used to develop a linear transformation series among the mtDNA genotypes. Two of the four clones had a wide distribution, while the remaining two clones were geographically restricted. The mtDNA of Columbian ground squirrels was also compared to two other species of Sciuridae: Richardson's ground squirrels (S. richardsonii) and Arctic ground squirrels (S. parryii). Calculation of divergences from fragment length and restriction-site data indicated that Arctic ground squirrels and Richardson's ground squirrels were more closely related to each other than either was to Columbian ground squirrels. The transformation series among clones within the Columbian ground squirrels was rooted using Richardson's and Arctic ground squirrels as out-groups. From these data, we conclude that the colonization by female founders of Columbian ground squirrel populations occurred after deglaciation along the eastern ranges of the Rocky Mountains, while colonies on the western ranges may have been present before extensive deglaciation occurred, having existed in refugia in northwestern Alberta.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of ectoparasites in transmitting Bartonella infections in wild Richardson's ground squirrels (Spermophilus richardsonii). Richardson's ground squirrels were trapped, examined for fleas, and tested for Bartonella bacteremia once monthly, at six sites, from April to September 2004. After the initial trapping session in April, burrows at three sites were treated with deltamethrin insecticide. Richardson's ground squirrels trapped on treated sites were less likely to have fleas and had fewer fleas than squirrels on control sites in all months following treatment. We found no difference in the prevalence of Bartonella infections on control and treated sites in May, immediately following treatment; however, significantly fewer squirrels were infected with Bartonella on treated sites in June and July. We conclude that ectoparasites are a main route of transmission for Bartonella infections in Richardson's ground squirrels.  相似文献

Arrhythmias developing in isolated Langendorff-perfused heart following the cooling of the perfusion solution from +37 to +3 degrees C were studied in rats and winter hibernating ground squirrels Citellus undulatus with application of no drugs. In rats, hypothermia significantly increased the probability of ventricular arrhythmias (from 22 +/- 6 % at 37 degrees C to 56 +/- 14 % at 17 degrees C). Excitation failure was observed in the rat hearts below 10 +/- 1 degrees C. The appearance of arrhythmias was closely correlated with a decrease in the wavelength which strongly suggests a reentrant mechanism of the hypothermic arrhythmias. In contrast, ground squirrels showed insensibility of the wavelength to cooling and were resistant to arrhythmias during hypothermia.  相似文献
