Only very few studies focus on recent calcareous dinoflagellate cyst diversity, geographic distribution and ecology, so that information on the distribution patterns and environmental affinities of individual cyst species is extremely limited. This information is, however, essential if we want to use calcareous dinoflagellate cysts for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Surface sediment samples from the generally oligotrophic western equatorial Atlantic Ocean, offshore northeast Brazil, were therefore quantitatively analysed for their calcareous dinoflagellate cyst content, including the calcareous vegetative coccoid Thoracosphaera heimii. Seven calcareous dinoflagellate cyst species/morphotypes and T. heimii were encountered in high concentrations throughout the area. Substantial differences in the distribution patterns were observed. The highest concentrations of cysts are found in sediments of the more oligotrophic, oceanic regions, beyond the influence of Amazon River discharge waters. Dinoflagellates producing calcareous cysts thus appear to be capable of surviving low nutrient concentrations and produce large numbers of cysts in relatively stable and predictable environments affected by minimal seasonality. To test for the environmental affinities of individual species, distribution patterns in surface sediments were compared with temperature, salinity, density and stratification gradients within the upper water column (0–100 m) over different times of the year, using principal components analysis and redundancy analysis. T. heimii and four of the seven encountered cyst species (Sphaerodinella? albatrosiana, two morphotypes of Sphaerodinella? tuberosa and Scrippsiella regalis) relate to these parameters significantly and the variations in the cyst associations appear to be associated with the different surface water currents characterising the area. The results imply that calcareous dinoflagellate cyst distributions can potentially be used to distinguish between different open oceanic environments and they could, therefore, be useful in tracing water mass movements throughout the late Quaternary.  相似文献

Several marine, peridiniphycidean dinoflagellate species produce calcareous cysts during their life cycle, which are relatively resistant to chemical and physical degradation and are therefore often found in large quantities in oceanic bottom sediments. Although the use of these calcareous cysts as proxies for palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic reconstructions has seen many advances over the last decade, until now only relatively patchy and regional information was available on their recent distribution patterns and ecology, especially at the species level. In this paper, comprehensive calcareous cyst diversity and distribution data have been compiled from published and unpublished work for 167 South and equatorial Atlantic Ocean surface sediments, ranging from 20°N to 50°S, and 30°E to 65°W. The main aim has been to focus on the complex, often non-linear, relationships between individual species’ distributions and the physicochemical and trophic conditions of the overlying (sub)surface waters through the use of xy graphs of cyst abundance vs. (sub)surface water environmental parameters, and detrended correspondence analyses. Ten cyst species and the calcareous vegetative coccoid species Thoracosphaera heimii were observed in the bottom sediments, each species showing its own characteristic distribution pattern in relation to the environmental conditions of the upper water masses above them (e.g. sea surface temperature, productivity, stratification). The sensitive reactions of various species to unique combinations of environmental parameters shows that each species has its own specific ecological traits, thus rejecting the bundled use of ‘calcareous cyst accumulation’ as a general proxy for oligotrophy or stratification in future palaeoenvironmental analyses. The acquired ‘reference’ data set of this study is large and diverse enough to allow its future application in quantitative palaeoenvironmental reconstruction models, and shows that there is still an enormous reconstruction potential concealed in many fossil calcareous dinoflagellate cyst assemblages.  相似文献

Surface sediments from seven stations located in the seasonally stratified, frontal and mixed water regions in the Celtic and Irish seas have been analysed for their dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and dinosterol content. A total of 45 dinoflagellate cyst taxa have been identified and the assemblages related to surface and sediment conditions. Sediments from the mixed water region, at 30 m water depth, are characterised by a relatively low cyst concentration (∼2300 cysts/g dry weight) and high relative abundances of Lingulodinium machaerophorum accompanied by Spiniferites membranaceus, Brigantedinium spp. and Dubridinium caperatum. Assemblages from stratified and frontal water stations are dominated by Spiniferites ramosus associated with Operculodinium centrocarpum, Brigantedinium spp., cysts of Polykrikos schwartzii and Selenopemphix quanta. Ordination techniques performed on a restricted number of 35 taxa from the assemblages differentiated the stratified and frontal assemblages based on the abundance of the less abundant species Bitectatodinium tepikiense and Spiniferites elongatus. Among the environmental parameters (sea-surface temperature and salinity, stratification index, chlorophyll concentration and sediment grain-size classes), the seasonal stratification and sedimentological context, itself a function of tidal dynamics, explain most of the variance in the environmental conditions. These results indicate that dinoflagellate cyst analyses of shelf sediment records can be used to document the planktonic signal of seasonal stratification dynamics.

The distribution of calcareous dinoflagellate cysts in surface sediments from the Mediterranean Sea was quantitatively analysed. The samples contain 11 cyst species and the vegetative coccoid Thoracosphaera heimii. Cyst abundance increases towards the deeper parts of the basins and is generally higher in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Three major distribution characteristics exist: (1) different assemblages in oceanic and neritic regions, (2) little agreement with the associations of areas studied so far like the Atlantic Ocean, and (3) a unique oceanic assemblage in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. A gradual change in cyst assemblages from the western to the eastern Mediterranean Sea was observed and statistically compared with the main environmental gradients in the upper water column. Temperature, nitrate concentration and possibly salinity appear to be the most important factors controlling cyst production. Three groups containing cysts with similar environmental preferences can be distinguished: (1) an eastern Mediterranean group related to relatively high temperature and salinity but low nitrate concentration, (2) a group of more or less consistently abundant cosmopolitan species tolerating or even preferring relatively low temperature and salinity but high nitrate concentration, and (3) a group containing species that are possibly adapted to neritic environments and have probably been transported from coastal areas into the studied regions. In contrast to other calcareous plankton, calcareous dinoflagellate cysts correlate strongly with the main environmental gradients in the Mediterranean Sea, bearing a high potential for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.  相似文献

Calcareous dinoflagellates have been recorded from subarctic to tropical areas, inhabiting both neritic and oceanic regions. In the present study we analyse 12 sediment samples from the China Sea to establish the existence of calcareous dinoflagellates in this area. A total of 11 calcareous dinoflagellate species were recorded, among them, three genera (Calciodinellum, Leonella, Posoniella) and seven species (Calciodinellum albatrosianum, C. levantinum, C. operosum, Leonella granifera, Posoniella tricarinel...  相似文献

Many marine protists produce a benthic resting stage during their life history. This non-motile cyst stage can either germinate near the sediment surface to provide the inoculum for subsequent blooms or, be buried by sediment deposits over time and entrained into the sedimentary record. Buried cysts can be resuspended into the water column by mixing events (e.g., storms) or other disturbances (e.g., dredging). It is not clear how long cysts can survive while buried in the sediments and still be capable of germinating given favorable conditions. Here, the germination success of cysts produced by the potentially toxic dinoflagellate genus Alexandrium and the non-toxic dinoflagellate genus Scrippsiella is reported from a 60-cm sediment core collected in Sequim Bay, WA, in December 2011. Cysts of Alexandrium spp. and Scrippsiella spp. were isolated from 2-cm sections of the core, placed in individual wells of a 96-well plate with growth medium, imaged, incubated at favorable conditions and monitored for germination. An image analysis program, DinoCyst, was used to quantitatively measure the amount of granular storage products, presumed energy stores, inside the cytoplasm to test the hypothesis that older cysts located deeper in the sediment core will have fewer energy stores available and will be less likely to germinate. An index of the area of the cytoplasm occupied with granular storage products relative to cyst size, termed ‘cytoplasmic fullness’, and age, based on 210Pb dating of surrounding sediments, was compared with germination success or failure. This research indicates that cysts of Alexandrium spp. and Scrippsiella spp. can remain viable in sediments for 60 years or longer, show little visual evidence of cytoplasmic deterioration over this timescale (as measured by cytoplasmic fullness), and that germination success is statistically similar for cysts isolated from 0–60 cm deep in the sediment core. These results suggest that a cyst's cytoplasmic fullness is not indicative of viability and that cysts located as deep as 60 cm in the sediments are as likely to germinate as surface cysts given favorable conditions.  相似文献

A survey of dinoflagellate resting cysts in surface sedimentsamples was carried out in Tokyo Bay, Japan, to document theirhorizontal distribution. At least 21 different cyst types werefound. Dominant cyst types allowed the recognition of assemblageswhich form three different dinoflagellate cyst communities:the innermost part of the Bay, the central area and the moutharea. In all stations in Tokyo Bay, heterotrophic dinoflagellatecysts always occupied more than half of the cyst populations.Cysts of Polykrikos schwartzii/kofoidii are the most abundantheterotrophic species. These assemblages may reflect highlynutrient-enriched (hypertrophic) and turbulent water conditions.Among the cyst types found were probable ellipsoidal cysts ofAlexandrium tamarense. This is the first record of toxic Alexandriumspecies cysts in Tokyo Bay sediments.  相似文献

While investigating dinoflagellate cyst assemblages in surface sediments of the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno (Mediterranean Sea), we found a new calcareous resting cyst. This cyst has a round to oval body surrounded by a thick mineral layer, which gives it the shape of a Napoleon hat, with a flat, oval face bearing the archeopyle and a convex keel on the opposite side. The cyst shape is variable in both natural samples and clonal cultures. The organic membrane underlying the calcareous covering is resistant to acetolysis, thus demonstrating the presence of sporopolleninlike material. The cyst germinated into a motile stage having the same morphological features and thecal plate pattern as Peridinium tyrrhenicum Balech. We believe the validity of the genus Pentapharsodinium Indelicato & Loeblich should be accepted. Based on the comparative examination of the species we collected and of a similar species, Pentapharsodinium trachodium Indelicato & Loeblich, we propose Pentapharsodinium tyrrhenicum as a new combination for Peridinium tyrrhenicum. The genus Pentapharsodinium also includes P. dalei Indelicato & Loeblich (= Peridinium faeroense Dale), which produces spiny, organic-walled cysts. The presence of species forming calcareous cysts and species producing noncalcareous cysts in the same genus raises questions about maintaining the family Calciodinellaceae. This family should only include calcareous cyst-forming peridinioids, in order to maintain a unified system of classification of fossil and recent dinoflagellates.  相似文献

Increased interest in the environmental applicability of calcareous dinoflagellate cysts for palaeo-environmental studies arose in the last two decades, when it was discovered that they constitute a widespread and abundant group within the calcareous phytoplankton. As primary producers they are directly influenced by environmental Parameters of the surrounding water masses, and therefore extremely suitable for detailed palaeo-environmental and -oceanographical reconstructions. During the last years, detailed investigations on their distribution in surface sediments of the South Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Sea were carried out, in order to reveal which environmental parameters influence their distribution. This, in turn, formed the base for palaeo-environmental and -oceanographical reconstructions. The compilation of the available data on calcareous dinoflagellate ecology, morphology, taxonomy and palaeo-environmental application presented here demonstrates their ample application potential as palaeo-environmental tools.   相似文献

Gymnodinium catenatum Graham (Dinophyceae)in Europe: a growing problem?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The microreticulate resting cyst of the potentially toxic, chain-forming,unarmoured neritic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenalum Graham1943. the planktonic stage of which is not known from NorthEuropean waters, is reported for the first time from recentGerman coastal sediments of the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Insandy mud sediments of the German Bight, a maximum of 8 5 livingcysts cm–3 were found. In Kiel Bight sediments G.catenalumwas found in maximum concentrations of 17.0 living cysts cm–3.In surface waters of the German Bight resuspended G catenatumcysts were observed at concentrations of up to 3.6 cysts l–1.Successful germination experiments conducted with natural seawatershow that the occurrence of a vegetative form of G.catenatumin northern Europe is very likely. The present study highlightsthat cyst surveys provide an important tool for the evaluationof areas with potential toxicity problems, as they may indicatethe presence of hitherto overlooked species in the water column.  相似文献

Resting cysts of the marine dinoflagellate Scrippsiella trochoideawere produced under phosphorus (P)-deficient conditions, separatedfrom vegatative cells, and incubated for 28 days in darknessat 4 and 20°C in P-enriched and P-deplete medium. The Pcontent of cysts incubated in the P-replete medium was significantlyhigher than that of cysts in P-deplete medium. As the P contentof the cysts increased through time, dissolved inorganic phosphatewas depleted in the medium. This decrease cannot be attributedto free-living bacterial uptake, since there was no correspondingincrease in bacterial particulate P. Disappearance of P fromthe medium can, therefore, only be explained by uptake associatedwith the cysts. This could be either direct cyst uptake, uptakeby bacteria closely associated with the cysts, or adsorptionof P on the cyst wall. Evidence is strongest that the cystsincorporated phosphate during the resting stages of dormancyand quiescence, despite the fact that these are periods of significantlyreduced metabolism. Accumulation of P during these benthic restingstages would increase the survival of newly excysted vegetativecells as they re-enter the water column after germination, providinga competitive advantage over other phytoplankton. Freshwaterand marine sediments provide a P-rich environment which mayserve as a potential nutrient pool for dinoflagellate restingcysts. Mobilization of nutrients to and from the sediments viacysts must now be evaluated to ascertain whether this couldbe a significant term in nutrient budgets.  相似文献

The occurrence and distribution of dinoflagellate resting cysts were investigated at 11 locations in the south-eastern part of the North Sea. Twenty-six known cyst species and 7 unknown cyst types, which may act as seed population for planktonic dinoflagellate blooms, have been recorded for the first time in the area. The most common cysts in recent sediments were those ofScrippsiella trochoidea, Zygabikodinium lenticulatum, Peridinium dalei, Scrippsiella lachrymosa, Protoceratium reticulatum, Protoperidinium denticulatum, andP. conicum. At all stations,S. trochoidea dominated the cyst assemblages with a maximal abundance of 1303 living cysts/cm3 in the uppermost half centimetre. Cysts of the potentially toxic dinoflagellatesAlexandrium cf.excavatum andA. cf.tamarense were scarce. In the upper 2-cm layer of sediment, dinoflagellate cysts were found in concentrations of 1.8 up to 682 living cysts/cm3. Empty cysts constituted 22–56% of total cyst abundance. The comparative distribution of the cysts showed a general increase in abundance from inshore sites to the offshore area, whereby sandy stations exhibited the lowest cyst abundance and diversity. The wide distribution of living and empty cysts ofScrippsiella lachrymosa suggests that its motile form, which has not been officially recorded in the area until now, is a common plankton organism in German coastal waters. The relatively high abundance of cysts in recent sediments demonstrates the potential importance of benthic resting stages for the initiation of dinoflagellate blooms in the study area.  相似文献

An organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst analysis was carried out on 53 surface sediment samples from West Africa (17–6°N) to obtain insight in the relationship between their spatial distribution and hydrological conditions in the upper water column as well as marine productivity in the study area.Multivariate analysis of the dinoflagellate cyst relative abundances and environmental parameters of the water column shows that sea-surface temperature, salinity, marine productivity and bottom water oxygen are the factors that relate significantly to the distribution patterns of individual species in the region. The composition of cyst assemblages and dinoflagellate cyst concentrations allows the identification of four hydrographic regimes; 1) the northern regime between 17 and 14°N characterized by high productivity associated with seasonal coastal upwelling, 2) the southern regime between 12 and 6°N associated with high-nutrient waters influenced by river discharge 3) the intermediate regime between 14 and 12°N influenced mainly by seasonal coastal upwelling additionally associated with fluvial input of terrestrial nutrients and 4) the offshore regime characterized by low chlorophyll-a concentrations in upper waters and high bottom water oxygen concentrations. Our data show that cysts of Polykrikos kofoidii, Selenopemphix quanta, Dubridinium spp., Echinidinium species, cysts of Protoperidinium monospinum and Spiniferites pachydermus are the best proxies to reconstruct the boundary between the NE trade winds and the monsoon winds in the subtropical eastern Atlantic Ocean. The association of Bitectatodinium spongium, Lejeunecysta oliva, Quinquecuspis concreta, Selenopemphix nephroides, Trinovantedinium applanatum can be used to reconstruct past river outflow variations within this region.  相似文献

The distribution and seasonal dynamics of cyst populations ofthe spring bloom dinoflagellate Scrippsiella hangoei were studiedin surface sediments on the southwest coast of Finland, BalticSea. In situ germination was assessed by monitoring the fractionof empty cysts and chlorophyll a fluorescence in cyst populationsat different coastal sites throughout the annual cycle. Scrippsiellahangoei resting cysts were widely distributed in the study areaand occurred in exceptionally large numbers (magnitudes of 104–106cysts cm–3) at all sampling locations between the innermostparts of the coastal archipelago and the open Gulf of Finland. The decreases in cyst number in winter and the increases occurringin late spring reflected the dynamics of germination and encystmentof the species. Chlorophyll fluorescence appeared in mid-winterin ~40% of cysts from well-aerated basins and 6–15% ofcysts from temporarily anoxic sediments. A generally low increasein the proportion of empty cysts indicated that only a partof the potentially germinable cysts actually germinates. Giventhe high cyst concentrations in the sediments, the potentialfor germination is considerable, despite the environmentallyand physiologically determined losses. In contrast, the sizeof the vegetative inoculum is very low, indicating that thesurvival of germlings is problematic under harsh winter conditions. This is an unusual life cycle strategy; however, the early releaseof cells into the water column provides a high probability forsuccessful bloom initiation under the unpredictable meteorologicalconditions in winter and early spring, which often lead to thesudden onset of favourable growth conditions.  相似文献

The palaeoecological significance of calcareous dinoflagellate cysts is illustrated by various examples. Genetically fixed and ecologically triggered character traits are distinguished. A summary is given regarding intraspe-cific variability, cyst size and shape, wall thickness, size and shape of the calcitic wall crystals, paratabulation, and archeopyle morphology based on the knowledge, which has been accumulated during the last two decades. Diversity and characteristic cyst associations from different localities are compared. Information on sea level changes, water temperature, oceanographic distribution, and nutrient conditions can be gained from the investigated character traits of calcareous dinoflagellates.   相似文献

Plankton records and 25 samples of Recent sediment from Trondheimsfjord and the adjoining shelf were studied to investigate production, sedimentation, and preservation of cysts, as factors which influence the eventual composition of dinoflagellate cyst assembleges. All sediment samples were examined for dinoflagellate cysts using routine semiquantitative palynological procedures. In addition, fjord sediments were subjected to a limited sediment analysis, and, for three samples, results from preparations both with and without acid treatments were compared. For the first time, cyst assembleges from Recent sediments were directly compared with extensive plankton records from overlying waters. Results indicate that approximately 20% of the 55 locally recorded dinoflagellate species contribute cysts to bottom sediments. Once formed, cysts behave as fine silt particles in the sedimentary regime, increasing in abundance as the percentage abundance of finer sediment increases, usually with increased water depth. Cyst-forming species are almost entirely restricted to a few genera, particularly Gonyaulax and Peridinium, within the order Peridiniales. For some groups, reasonably good correspondence was found between percentage abundances of dinoflagellates in plankton and their cysts in sediment, though plankton records covering at least five years were required to establish this. Gonyaulax grindleyi Reinecke (Von Stosch 1969) appeared to be consistently overrepresented by cysts in sediment relative to available plankton evidence; possible explanations are suggested. At least 30% of the cyst species present, including most Peridinium species, were eliminated, or rendered unreliable for semiquantitative palynology, by application of routine palynological preparation treatments. Such cysts may provide useful, non-quantitative, palynological information from Recent and possibly Quaternary sediments, but their persistence would seem unlikely. Thus, factors of preservation probably further restrict the dinoflagellate fossil record. Cyst assemblages from Trondheimsfjord are comparable with those previously recorded from the northeastern coast of U.S.A., and from Scotland and northeastern England. Fjord assemblages are dominated by small, simple, spinose cysts which would be regarded as acritarchs if culture experiments had not proved that they are dinoflagellate cysts. Much potential biogeographic and palaeoenvironmental information was included within the less abundant species.Attention is drawn to the role which future culture experiments may be expected to play in helping to resolve taxonomic difficulties currently affecting dinoflagellate studies. Palynological significance of results from the present study is discussed especially with reference to recent work by Von Stosch which strongly suggests that cysts may be hypnozygotes formed routinely in sexual cycles of dinoflagellates.  相似文献

Scrippsiella rotunda and Scrippsiella trochoidea var. aciculifera (order Peridiniales, subfamily Calciodinelloideae) are autotrophic orthoperidinioid dinoflagellates producing calcareous resting cysts which are at times abundant in coastal marine sediments. We have carried out laboratory experiments to investigate features of cyst germination in the two species, including dormancy length, germination pattern and germination success, over an annual cycle and under different light and temperature conditions. The maturation period for S. rotunda cysts was between 17 and 24 weeks, while that of S. trochoidea var. aciculifera was much shorter, ranging between 2 and 5 weeks. Both species required exposure to light for germination, while temperature shifts (from 14 to 20C) in the dark did not induce excystment of mature cysts. In both species, germination was not synchronous, but distributed over a variable time interval, suggesting a high physiological diversity within the cyst pool. Moreover, exposure to light of S. rotunda cysts that had not completed maturation impaired the germination of a great percentage of the cysts. Differences in dormancy length may partially explain the distinct cyst production patterns observed for the two species in the Gulf of Naples.   相似文献

Over the past two decades, organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) have been increasingly used as paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic indicators in marine sediments from the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Because dinocysts are acid-resistant and abundant in nearly all aquatic settings, the dinocyst-based environmental and paleoclimatic information is complementary to the data derived from calcareous and siliceous microfossil groups such as foraminifers, calcareous nannoplankton, diatoms, and radiolarians. In some cases, the environmental information of dinocysts even exceeds that of calcareous and siliceous microfossils. The present contribution provides an outline of the present-day knowledge on dinocyst paleoecology. It reviews the potential of dinocysts for the reconstruction of sea-surface productivity, temperature, and salinity as well as their application in sequence stratigraphy. Finally, it evaluates the applicability of dinocysts in reconstructing the paleo-oxygenation in the bottom and pore waters of marine environments and in the lower water column of epeiric seas.  相似文献
