Studies on Plover Cove Reservoir, Hong Kong   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The zooplankton fauna of the Plover Cove Reservoir has been investigated using two sampling series. The first series involving a 3-year investigation using 6-ft vertical hauls at three stations in the reservoir, revealed the presence of two copepod and four cladoceran species with little variation in terms of seasonal peak occurrence and abundance in any of the stations and so no evidence of the horizontal distribution patterns referred to by other authors. In all three stations Diaptomus gracilis was the dominant copepod species and Diaphanosoma leuchtenbergianum the dominant cladoceran species. The second series, involving a 13-month investigation of vertical sets of water samples collected both day and night at 4-h intervals for 24-h periods, revealed that in terms of seasonal vertical distribution, all six species occurred at all depths during the survey, but with a tendency to be concentrated in the surface waters. In terms of diurnal vertical distribution, differences in the migration pattern occurred from season to season in the case of Diaptomus gracilis. Thus, during spring, summer and autumn, concentrations occurred at the surface at 10.00 and 22.00 hours followed by migration to greater depth, whereas in winter, surface accumulations persisted even into the daylight hours. However, both Cyclops hyalinus and Diaphanosoma leuchtenbergianum showed surface accumulations at night and a movement away from the surface by day during all seasons. Investigations of the seasonal variation in environmental parameters conducted during both sampling series revealed that, as in the case of similar surveys, water temperature was the major controlling factor governing the seasonal variation in composition of the zooplankton fauna as well as its seasonal vertical distribution since in the case of Diaptomus gracilis and Ceriodaphnia reticulata low water temperatures corresponded with peak seasonal occurrence whereas in the case of the other species high water temperatures corresponded with peak seasonal occurrence, and since Diaptomus gracilis and Diaphanosoma leuchtenbergianum showed maximum concentration near the surface when surface water temperatures were high, whereas the remaining species showed their maximum concentration near the surface when lower water temperatures prevailed. It would also appear, however, that seasonal changes in zooplankton densities closely followed algal densities since Diaptomus gracilis, Diaphanosoma leuchtenbergianum and Bosmina longirostris had their maxima in late spring and Cyclops hyalinus in late summer while algal densities in this reservoir were highest in early spring and early summer. With regard to the diurnal vertical distribution of the zooplankton, light appeared to be the only factor alternating by an amount likely to be correlated with such diurnal vertical changes in zooplankton density.  相似文献

Locally called IAG pond, system is a small, oligotrophic, shallow, urban reservoir located in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga Biological Reserve, south of São Paulo municipality, southeastern Brazil. Study was carried out in two phases to cover the two climatic periods (dry and rainy) that characterize the area. Daily samples were collected on seven consecutive days (dry = 20–26 August 1996; rainy = 22–28 January 1997), three times a day (07:00 h, 13:00 h, and 19:00 h), following the water column vertical profile at reservoir’s deepest site (Z max = 4.7 m). The phytoplankton’s community structure’s diurnal variation was compared with environmental variables (thermal structure of the water column, pH, CO2, dissolved oxygen, total phosphorus, and NH4). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant variation among sampling hours and days but not among depths for most species, thus revealing a tendency towards a homogeneous vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the reservoir. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed a significant relationship between distribution of phytoplankton species and environmental variables used for ordination. Water temperature was the environmental variable that best explained distribution of sample units. Atelomixis was the only possible explanation for how a non-motile alga as, for example, the chlorococcal Oocystis lacustris Chodat and the diatom Cyclotella stelligera Cleve &; Grunow, can be so widespread and abundant in the IAG pond during the stratified period.  相似文献

Nutrient addition experiments conducted during the ice-free seasons of 1983 and 1984 in Gem Lake, an alpine lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, indicate that algal biomass is limited by phosphorus, in combination with iron or copper. Phosphorus additions were always required to stimulate growth, but did not do so when phosphorus was the only nutrient added. Simultaneous additions of phosphorus and iron resulted in increased levels of chlorophyll, particulate carbon, particulate nitrogen and particulate phosphorus. Simultaneous additions of phosphorus and copper resulted in increases in chlorophyll, particulate nitrogen and particulate phosphorus, not in particulate carbon. Neither iron nor copper by itself stimulated growth.Particulate N : P ratios from all seasons in Gem Lake suggest that simultaneous micronutrient and phosphorus limitation exists throughout the summer, when nutrient and biomass levels remain low; limitation by phosphorus alone may appear in the fall and spring, when biomass and major ion concentrations increase dramatically.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of the tubificid worm Rhyacodrilus hiemalis Ohtaka, the numerically dominant species of oligochaete in the littoral of Lake Biwa, was studied with special reference to seasonal vertical migration in the lake sediment. Monthly collections of lake sediment cores were made using PVC tubes. Core sections of sample sediments ranged from 76 to 117 cm. The vertical distribution of the worms showed no diurnal variation; therefore diel vertical migration was not evident. Seasonal downward migration started in April, and upward migration started in October. From December to March, almost all worms remained in the near-surface sediment layer (surface to 30 cm deep), while from July to September almost all worms remained deeper than 30 cm. However, few individuals migrated deeper than 90 cm. No discontinuous layers were found in grain size composition, water content, loss on ignition, particulate carbon, nitrogen or phosphorus. In deep sediment there was no free oxygen, as evidenced by negative ORP values. For 4 months in summer, R. hiemalis aestivated, probably utilizing anaerobic respiration. It appeared that R. hiemalis moved deeper in the sediment in response to sediment temperature, because sediment temperatures in the deep layers seemed to converge at around 20–21 °C in the summer months. The life history traits of seasonal vertical migration and summer aestivation perhaps arose as an adaptation to the climatic conditions accompanying the geographical origin of R. hiemalis, and they also serve to minimize predation risk during summer when most invertebrate predatory fishes are active.  相似文献

Lake Inba is one of the most eutrophic lakes in Japan. In this study, field sampling and nutrient enrichment bioassays were conducted to determine the seasonal patterns of nutrient limitation for phytoplankton growth in this lake. Phytoplankton biomass increased significantly with the additions of phosphorus (P) on almost all sampling dates, indicating P limitation of phytoplankton growth from spring to autumn. However, nitrogen (N) limitation was also observed during summer (i.e., 19 August). On 10 August, a typhoon struck Lake Inba. After this event, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus concentrations increased, probably because of increased river discharge. At the same time, phytoplankton growth in the control treatment became relatively high, with the addition of neither P nor N stimulating the growth. However, 10 days after the typhoon, the phytoplankton growth rate in the control treatment decreased, with only the addition of N having a significant positive effect on phytoplankton growth. N limitation during summer is caused by the low concentrations of DIN, as well as changes in the N:P ratio due to allochthonous nutrient loads. These results indicate that a reduction of both P and N input is necessary to control phytoplankton blooms in Lake Inba.  相似文献

Two sediment sampling campaigns were conducted in 1978 and 1988 in Lake Geneva (Switzerland). Organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and its various forms were analyzed. Results indicate a stability of organic carbon and nitrogen mass, and a significant increase of phosphorus. The variation of phosphorus mass is related to the increase of nonapatite inorganic phosphorus. This study attempts to quantify the phosphorus exchanges at the water sediment interface. The dissolved oxygen level in the bottom water determines the exchange direction. In aerobic conditions, sediments accumulate the excess of phosphorus, while in anaerobic conditions, they constitute an internal source.  相似文献

Litter and wet traps were employed to determine the inputs of coarse organic matter (empneuston), total organic carbon, total nitrogen and phosphorus through dry fallout and precipitation to a soft-water, mesotrophic lake. The dispersal of airborne material over the lake surface was investigated, and a method for the calculation of total input was developed. The component of the particulate matter larger than 1 mm contained the largest proportion of organic carbon, while the dissolved and the fine particle (smaller than 1 mm) fractions made greater contributions to the inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. The importance of the large particle fraction of the airborne organic matter in the lake's nutrient budget during the autumnal fall of litter was confirmed. However, the maximum total airborne input seems to occur during spring and summer. The input of phosphorus compounds through the atmosphere to small forest lakes is large compared to that from other sources. Airborne material accounts for 39% of the total phosphorus loading.  相似文献

To determine the best acoustic sampling period for obtaining fish biomass estimates of a Mediterranean deep reservoir in Tunisia, day and night surveys were performed in spring (April), summer (September), autumn (December) and winter (March). A Simrad EK60 echosounder, equipped with two 120 kHz split-beam transducers for simultaneous horizontal and vertical beaming, was used to sample the entire water column. Data collected in December were not usable, because fish merged with methane gas bubbles. However, fish abundance varied across the other seasons, with a peak in acoustic biomass during summer nighttime hours associated with high water temperatures. Across seasons, the fish occupied the entire water column and fish schools were rarely observed. The preferential timeframe (i.e. maximum fish detectability and low gas flux) for acoustic sampling was nighttime hours in summer and daytime hours during spring and winter. Our findings highlight the importance of collecting data across seasons and photoperiods when determining an acoustic sampling strategy.  相似文献

The success of P. juliflora, an evergreen woody species has been largely attributed to temperature acclimation and stomatal control of photosynthesis under wide range of environmental conditions prevalent in India. We studied the contribution of the enzyme ribulose-1,5 bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) in diurnal and seasonal photosynthesis changes in P. juliflora. The changes observed in photosynthesis under natural conditions could be effected by the growth temperatures, which ranged from 10–30 °C in winter to 30–47 °C in summer. However, the Total Rubisco activity displayed a constant diurnal pattern and showed a maximum at 1200 in all seasons namely spring, summer, monsoon and winter irrespective of the changes in temperature. The Total Rubisco activity from two cohorts of leaves produced in spring and monsoon appeared to be down-regulated differentially at low PPFD during the evening. The in vivo and in vitro measurements of carboxylation efficiency of Rubisco showed wide variation during the day and were correlated with the photosynthesis rate. The light activation of Rubisco showed the acclimation to moderately high temperatures in different seasons except in summer. The exceptionally high temperatures (>45 °C) in summer, though not affecting Total activity, severely inhibited the light activation of Rubisco and also modulated the recovery process for the activation of Rubisco. Our studies suggest that the modulation of Rubisco driven by Rubisco activase and not Rubisco per se was crucial for the diurnal regulation of photosynthesis. NBRI Publication No.: 528  相似文献

The diel changes of the biochemical composition of particulate matter was studied in Villerest reservoir (located on the Loire river, near the city of Roanne, France) during July 92. Several biomass and metabolic indicators (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, chlorophyll a and primary production) were assessed bihourly over 2 days.Since the P/C is largely recognized as a good integrator of the metabolic functions of the cells, we examined its distribution pattern concomitantly with aforementioned parameters. The results demonstrated enhanced P/C ratios clearly indicating that nutrients were sufficiently available for growth. In addition, this index showed a diel significant variation with levels higher in the night than in the day. Moreover, these results suggest that phytoplankton species during the night used the day-synthesized carbohydrates to insure the cell metabolic functioning.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance and composition of photosynthetic picoplankton (0.2-2 μm) was compared among five oligotrophic to mesotrophic lakes in Ontario. Epilimnetic picocyanobacteria abundance followed a similar pattern in all lakes; maximum abundance (2-4 × 105 cells · ml−1) occurred in late summer following a period of rapid, often exponential increase after epilimnetic temperatures reached 20 °C. In half of the lakes picocyanobacteria abundance was significantly correlated with temperature, while in other lakes the presence of a small spring peak resulted in a poor correlation with temperature. In all lakes there was a significant correlation between epilimnetic abundance and day of the year. Correlations with water chemistry parameters (soluble reactive phosphorus, total phosphorus, particulate C: P and C: N) were generally weaker or insignificant. However, in the three lakes with the highest spring nitrate concentrations, a significant negative correlation with nitrate was observed. During summer stratification, picocyanobacteria abundance reached a maximum within the metalimnion and at or above the euphotic zone (1% of incident light) in all lakes. These peaks were not related to nutrient gradients. The average total phytoplankton biomass ranged from 0.5 g m−3 (wet weight) in the most oligotrophic lake to 1.4 g m−3 for the most mesotrophic with picoplankton biomass ranging from 0.01 g m−3 to 0.3 g m−3. Picocyanobacteria biomass comprised 1 to 9 % of total phytoplankton biomass in late summer, but in one year for one lake represented a maximum of 56%. Other photosynthetic picoplankton (unidentified eukaryotes, Chlorella spp. Nannochloris spp.), although less abundant (103 cells · ml−1) than picocyanobacteria, represented biomass equal or greater than that of the picocyanobacteria in spring and early summer. On average, half of the photosynthetic picoplankton biomass was eukaryotic in the more coloured lakes, while in the clear lakes less than 20% was eukaryotic. Among the lakes there was a significant positive correlation between the average light extinction coefficient and the proportion of eukaryotic biomass of the picoplankton. In mesotrophic Jack's Lake, the contribution of picoplankton to the maximum photosynthetic rate ranged from 10 to 47% with the highest values in the spring (47%) and late summer (33%), as a result of eukaryotic picoplankton and picocyanobacteria respectively. Picocyanobacteria cell specific growth rates were high during July (0.6-0.8 day−1) and losses were close to 80% of the growth rate. Thus, despite low biomass, photosynthetic picoplankton populations appeared to turn over rapidly and potentially contributed significantly to planktonic food webs in early spring and late summer.  相似文献

The diel vertical distribution patterns of a migratory alga Cryptomonas marssonii in a small, steeply stratified humic lake were investigated during a summer season (10 diurnal experiments between May and September) using a close-interval Blakar-type sampler. The results indicate that the cells were phototactic; they were typically concentrated at the surface or subsurface during daylight, while in darkness the highest densities were recorded in deeper water, usually near the upper limit of anoxia. During a dense blue-green bloom in August the cells of C. marssonii were also concentrated by day into the same water layer, where oxygen was depleted. However, the cells seemed to avoid totally anoxic water. Because the vertical distribution pattern of C. marssonii had special diurnal and seasonal characteristics, care is needed when designing a sampling programme for a phytoplankton population dominated by this species.  相似文献

The concentrations of soluble reactive and total phosphate, silicate, and nitrate in the tributaries and in the watercolumn of the meso/eutrophic reservoir Saidenbach were investigated at weekly or fortnightly intervals. The results are presented as annual averages over 16 years (from 1975 till 1990) and show a gradual increase of the N- and P-concentration in the inlets caused by an intensification of the agriculture in the drainage basin and high domestic sewage releases from the settlements having no waste water treatment. The silicate concentration of the inlets remained constant. Consequently, also a rise of the in-lake concentrations of the two P-fractions was observed. The nitrate concentration of the reservoir Saidenbach increased till 1978, but showed no significant trend over the whole investigation period. The drop of the in-lake silicate concentration during the eighties has to be explained by diminished discharges and, most of all, a higher biological activity as a consequence of the increased P-loading. Intra-annual concentrations calculated as winter, spring, summer (epi- and hypolimnion) and autumn means show the distinct seasonal periodicity of the phosphorus and silicon cycles. Therefore, annual average in-lake concentrations of these nutrients are not quite good measures reflecting changes of the trophic conditions, but rather the winter and early spring values are. No correlations were detected between the annual mean concentrations and the loads. On the other hand, no remarkable seasonal cycling of the nitrate concentrations could be observed and, in this case, a clear dependence exists between annual mean concentrations and loads. The results found for the tributaries of the meso/eutrophic reservoir Saidenbach were compared with those observed in the inlets of the neighbouring oligotrophic reservoir Neunzehnhain. Here the phosphorus concentrations remained almost constant during the time of investigation, but the nitrate concentrations increased too. This must be attributed to agriculture, air pollution and forest management.  相似文献

为了阐明三峡水库初次蓄水后干流库区枝角类的时空分布规律, 2004年4月至2005年1月, 在600余公里干流库区设置10个样点, 定性和定量采集枝角类标本。本次调查共采到9种枝角类, 其中春季8种, 夏季5种, 秋季2种, 冬季3种。枝角类种类组成的空间分布差异明显, 河流状态的江段有4种, 水库状态的江段有7种, 水库状态的江段距大坝越近, 枝角类种类越丰富。枝角类的密度和生物量的空间分布和季节变化规律一致, 季节间差异极显著(P<0.01), 春季最高, 夏季次之, 秋季和冬季较低; 空间分布上表现为在干流库区的纵向分布上差异极显著(P<0.01), 河流状态样点远低于水库状态的样点, 水库上游江段又低于下游坝前段。结果显示三峡水库的枝角类具有明显的纵向分布和季节变化特征。  相似文献

Sampling studies were conducted on grass thrips, Anaphothrips obscurus (Müller) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), in timothy, Phleum pratense L. These studies were used to compare the occurrence of brachypterous and macropterous thrips across sampling methods, seasons, and time of day. Information about the population dynamics of this thrips was also revealed. Three absolute and two relative methods were tested at three different dates within a season and three different daily times during four harvest periods. Thrips were counted and different phenotypes were recorded from one of the absolute methods. Absolute methods were the most similar to one another over time of day and within seasonal dates. Relative methods varied in assessing thrips population dynamics over time of day and within seasonal dates. Based on thrips collected from the plant and sticky card counts, macropterous individuals increased in the spring and summer. Thrips aerially dispersed in the summer. An absolute method, the beat cup method (rapping timothy inside a plastic cup), was among the least variable sampling methods and was faster than direct observations. These findings parallel other studies, documenting the commonality of diel and diurnal effects on sampled arthropod abundance and the seasonal effects on population abundance and structure. These studies also demonstrate that estimated population abundance can be markedly affected by temporal patterns as well as shifting adult phenotypes.  相似文献

1. The spatio-temporal patterns of drifting macroinvertebrates in a large, braided New Zealand river were determined by sampling with drift nets, seasonally, for 1 year. 2. Drift densities were greatest in autumn, and at night in all seasons except winter. A greater proportion of larger animals drifted at night than during the day in all seasons. Mean annual drift densities were ninety-six animals 100m?3 and 47 mg dry weight 100 m?3. 3. There were relatively few taxa in the drift, and the mayfly Deleatidium spp. comprised more than 85% of the drifting aquatic invertebrates in all seasons except autumn. Chironomidae and terrestrial forms were the only other groups to occur at densities of more than one animal 100 m?3 in all seasons. 4. Drift density was positively correlated with benthic density, which in turn was adversely affected by floods, particularly during spring and summer.  相似文献

Phytoplankton abundance and community structure were determined routinely over an annual period and intensively during two storm-runoff events in a small suburban reservoir in northern Virginia, U.S.A. Traditional graphical techniques and a multivariate approach (Principal Components Analysis) were used to demonstrate a seasonal pattern of phytoplankton succession with greens and blue-greens dominant in summer, diatoms and chrysophytes in spring and fall, and cryptophytes in winter. Spatial variations were minor over horizontal and vertical dimensions during spring mixis, but depth variations were substantial during summer stratification. Storm runoff had little effect on phytoplankton composition during the stable summer period, but was associated with a substantial perturbation in community structure during the spring to summer transition.  相似文献

High density of haematophagous blackflies on Nuku-Hiva Island (Marquesas archipelago, French Polynesia) is a handicap to its optimal development. The present study contains observations from many sampling sites to examine aggressive periods of Simulium buissoni Roubaud, 1906. Density of aggressive females is very high, principally in highly irrigated sites of the island. Biting rates show low variation between days, and a diurnal activity, with a poorly pronounced circum-meridian maximum. Parity rates show great variation between sampling stations, but are lowest during the day. A hypothesis of greater spatial dispersion of nulliparous females allows explanation of much of the observed variation. Sampling in and out of a house shows exophily of blackflies. Proportion of parous females is greater in the house. Data collected over a long period show that earlier densities were greater than recent ones. Perturbation of the environment is probably the basis of this decrease.  相似文献

Growth of mesh-enclosed Gracilaria sordida plants was determined monthly for one year at the Mokomoko mudflat, South Island, New Zealand. Growth of plants with permanent water cover was correlated with water temperature and was most rapid during summer months. Plants exposed at low tide grew only during early spring and late autumn. Bimonthly quadrat sampling of a mudflat population showed that all stages of the life cycle were present throughout the year. Spermatangial plant length and biomass were greatest in early spring; cystocarpic and tetrasporic plants were greatest in midsummer. Sterile plants were most numerous in the late summer. Agar yield showed little variation either seasonally or between different stages of the life cycle. Agar gel strengths for all life cycle stages were greatest at the time of peak plant size and abundance. Gels from spermatangial plants generally were weaker than those from other stages.  相似文献
