Plant-soil Interactions: Ecological Aspects and Evolutionary Implications   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
Building on the concept of plants as ecosystem engineers, and on published information on effects of particular plant species on soils, we review the evidence that such effects can provide a positive feedback to such plants. Based on case studies involving dune formation by Marram grass, N supply by N2-fixing plants, depression of N availability by ericaceous plants, islands of fertility in deserts, mull- and mor-forming temperate forest trees, and formation of peatbogs, as well as similar other cases, we conclude that there is strong evidence for plant-soil feedbacks in a variety of ecosystems. We argue, moreover, that these feedbacks could have played a role in the evolution of the plant species in question. These ideas are based mainly on correlative observations, and need further testing.  相似文献

Alterations of receptor-G-protein-regulated adenylyl cyclase activity have been suggested to represent an important alteration leading to contractile dysfunction in the failing human heart. Recent experiments suggest that the 1-adrenoceptor(1AR) density and mRNA levels are reduced, while 2-adrenoceptors and stimulatory G-proteins are unchanged (mRNA and protein level). Functional assays demonstrated that the catalyst of the adenylyl cyclase is not different between failing and nonfailing myocardium. Inhibitory G-proteins are increased (pertussis toxin substrates, protein and mRNA) and correlate to the reduced inotropic effects of -adrenoceptor agonists and of CAMP-PDE inhibitors. Gi-coupled m-cholinoceptors and A1-adrenergic receptors are unchanged in density and affinity. Stimulation of these receptors resulted in an unchanged antiadrenergic effect on force of contraction. In conclusion, a downregulation of 1-AR and an increase of Gi have been observed as signal transduction alteration in failing human myocardium. These alterations are due to alterations of gene expression in the failing heart and are related to a defective regulation of force of contraction in heart failure.  相似文献

Summary It is known that nitrogen and phosphorus can be transferred from one living plant to another, but it is not known whether the amounts transferred are large enough to influence the growth of the species in the field. Two Lolium perenne plants were grown per pot of unfertilized soil. During 25 weeks one plant (the donor) in each pot was fed nutrients through leaves; donors in control pots received only water. The receiver plants which shared a pot with the nutrient-fed donors increased significantly, compared with the controls, in leaf number and concentration of phosphorus, though not in concentration of nitrogen, potassium, calcium or magnesium. The rate of phosphorus transfer agreed well with previous results using 32P. The results are compared with rates of phosphorus uptake in the field. It is concluded that nutrient transfer could have an influence on the balance between coexisting species in the field, but probably the influence will be small.  相似文献

To study the influence of soil moisture on phosphorus (P) depletion in the rhizosphere, maize (Zea mays cv. Trak) was pre-grown in vermiculite filled-PVC tubes for 9 days and then the plants with the tubes were transplanted into soil columns maintained at two soil moisture levels () of 0.14 and 0.20 cm3 cm–3 for 10 days. The soil columns were separated at 1 cm depth by a nylon screen of 53 m inner mesh size, into 1 cm soil layer above and 3 cm soil column below screen. A root mat developed over the screen, but root hairs only could penetrate it. Regardless of the soil moisture level in the columns, and adequate and equal water and nutrients supply was maintained via wicks from an external nutrient solution to the plant roots in vermiculite. After 10 days, the soil columns were separated from the root mats, quickly frozen in liquid nitrogen and sliced into thin layers (0.2mm) using a refrigerated microtome to give soil samples at defined distances from the root mats for analyses. Lower soil moisture (=0.14) resulted in narrower and steeper depletion profile of 0.5 M NaHCO3 extractable P (NaHCO3-Pi) as compared to higher soil moisture (=0.20). Depletion of P in soil solution in the immediate vicinity of root mats did not differ much but the extension of the depletion zones was 0.10 cm at =0.14 and 0.20 cm at =0.20. The depletion up to 0.05cm with =0.14 and up to 0.07 cm with =0.20 was uniform, and may be attributed to the depletion in the root hair zone. Beyond the root hair zones, the theory of diffusion and mass flow was able to explain the observed differences in shape and extent of the P depletion profiles at the two soil moisture levels.  相似文献

该文综述了植物—土壤反馈研究的定义、途经、方法和国内外的研究现状以及存在的问题。植物—土壤反馈是指植物改变根际土壤的生物和非生物特征,同时被改变的也能提高或降低该植物的生长,形成正的或负的反馈,从而影响植物群落组成及植物间相互作用。植物—土壤反馈研究对于理解植物群落演替、生态系统多样性与生产力形成与维持机制,认识生态系统对气候变化和生物入侵等全球生态事件的响应具有重要的理论意义。外来物种快速生长和繁殖及其可能的负反馈可能会导致本地种被竞争排除,未来气候变化可能导致物种组成发生变化及生物多样性丢失,但资源互补和植物—土壤反馈效应则可能使植物群落具有较高的生产力和多样性。因此,未来植物—土壤反馈关系应该加强以下几方面研究:(1)开展不同生态系统植物—土壤反馈关系的比较研究;(2)植物—土壤及土壤—植物等群落水平的反馈研究;(3)特别是要加强分子和基因工具在植物土壤—反馈关系中的应用,揭示植物—土壤反馈关系的分子机理。  相似文献

The T-cell receptor (TCR) and loci are particularly interesting because of their unique genomic structure, in that the gene segments for each locus are interspersed. The origin of this remarkable gene segment arrangement is obscure. In this report, we investigated the evolution of the TCR and variable loci and their respective recombination signal sequences (RSSs). Our phylogenetic analyses divided the and variable gene segments into two major groups each with distinguishing motifs in both the framework and complementarity determining regions (CDRs). Sequence analyses revealed that TCR variable segments share similar CDR2 sequences with immunoglobulin light chain variable segments, possibly revealing similar evolutionary histories. Maximum likelihood analysis of the region on Chromosome 14q11.2 containing the loci revealed two possible ancestral TCR / variable segments, TRDV2 and TRAV1-1/1-2, respectively. Maximum parsimony revealed different evolutionary patterns between the variable segment and RSS of the same variable gene arguing for dissimilar evolutionary origins. Two models could account for this difference: a V(D)J recombination activity involving embedded heptamer-like motifs in the germline genome, or, more plausibly, an unequal sister chromatid crossing-over. Either mechanism would have resulted in increased diversity for the adaptive immune system.  相似文献

The role of streambed sediment as a sink for pesticides and heavy metals was investigated in 30 Danish lowland streams. The investigated streams drain catchments varying in hydrology, topography, soil type and land use. The <250 m newly accumulated fraction of the uppermost 1–2 cm layer of streambed sediment was analysed for 19 old and modern pesticides and 9 heavy metals. DDE was present in the sediment of all the streams. Of the herbicides, fungicides and insecticides currently in use, the most frequently detected was diuron (50.0%), fenpropimorph (66.7%) and lambda-cyhalothrin (6.7%), respectively. The pesticides detected in the highest concentration were fenpropimorph (1700 ng g–1), propiconazole (130 ng g–1) and isoproturon (110 ng g–1). The heavy metals are listed in order of increasing median concentration: Cd (0.80 g g–1), Co (9.1 g g–1), As (12.0 g g–1), Ni (19.0 g g–1), Cr (19.2 g g–1), Pb (19.7 g g–1), Cu (20.1 g g–1), V (28.5 g g–1), Zn (103 g g–1). The average number of pesticides detected in the 27 streams draining predominantly agricultural catchments was (3.7±2.0) being higher (p=0.077) than in the three streams draining non-agricultural catchments (1.7±0.6). Pesticides were significantly related to catchment size, soil type and hydrological regime. Several heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, V and Zn) were related to urban activity and soil type.  相似文献

Summary The leu-3/-IPM (-isopropylmalate) regulatory system, previously shown to control several genes of leucine, isoleucine, valine, and histidine biosynthesis, appears likely to be involved also in the regulation of overall RNA and protein synthesis in Neurospora. Upon addition of -IPM the synthesis of all major species of stable RNA was found to be transiently inhibited by approximately 50%. A similar reduction was observed in overall protein synthesis. The inhibition was dependent in both cases on a functional leu-3 gene product, in conformance with previously established patterns of -IPM dependent gene regulation. The overt resemblance of the phenomenon described here to the stringent response of bacteria is noted but neither the mechanism of inhibition nor the precise role of -IPM in the process has been established.  相似文献

Geostatistical analyses show that the distribution of soil N, P and K is strongly associated with the presence of shrubs in desert habitats. Shrubs concentrate the biogeochemical cycle of these elements in islands of fertility that are localized beneath their canopies, while adjacent barren, intershrub spaces are comparatively devoid of biotic activity. Both physical and biological processes are involved in the formation of shrub islands. Losses of semiarid grassland in favor of invading shrubs initiate these changes in the distribution of soil nutrients, which may promote the further invasion and persistence of shrubs and cause potential feedbacks between desertification and the Earth's climate system.  相似文献

Summary Inhibition of growth of PY815 mouse mastocytoma cells in vitro by N6, O2-dibutyryladenosine 3,5 cyclic monophosphate (DB cyclic AMP) was accompanied by increases in intracellular cyclic AMP and histamine and minor changes in cytosolic cyclic AMP-dependent histone kinase activity. However, DEAE-cellulose chromatography revealed substantial changes in the relative proportions of the principal cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases and in free cyclic AMP-binding protein after DB cyclic AMP treatment. The activity of cytosolic cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase type I (PKI) decreased relative to cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase type II (PKII) and there was an increase in a cytosol cyclic AMP-binding protein with little associated protein kinase activity. Summary Two modifications to the commonly used protocols for calculating NMR structures are developed, relating to the treatment of NOE constraints involving groups of equivalent protons or nonstereoassigned diastereotopic protons. Firstly, a modified method is investigated for correcting for multiplicity, which is applicable whenever all NOE intensities are calibrated as a single set and categorised in broad intensity ranges. Secondly, a new set of values for pseudoatom corrections is proposed for use with calculations employing centre-averaging. The effect of these protocols on structure calculations is demonstrated using two proteins, one of which is well defined by the NOE data, the other less so. It is shown that failure to correct for multiplicity when using r-6 averaging results in overly precise structures, higher NOE energies and deviations from geometric ideality, while failure to correct for multiplicity when using r-6 summation can cause an avoidable degradation of precision if the NOE data are sparse. Conversely, when multiplicities are treated correctly, r-6 averaging, r-6 summation and centre averaging all give closely comparable results when the structure is well defined by the data. Summary We examined the intracellular localization of sugar residues of the rat gastric surface mucous cells in relation to the functional polarity of the cell organellae using preembedding method with several lectins.In the surface mucous cells, the nuclear envelope and rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) and cis cisternae of the Golgi stacks were intensely stained with Maclura pomifera (MPA), which is specific to -Gal and GalNAc residues. In the Golgi apparatus, one or two cis side cisternae were stained with MPA and Dolichos biflorus (DBA) which is specific to terminal -N-acetylgalactosamine residues, while the intermediate lamellae were intensely labeled with Arachis hypogaea (PNA) which is specific to Gal 1,3 GalNAc. Cisternae of the trans Golgi region were also stained with MPA, Ricinus communis I (RCA I) which is specific to -Gal and Limax flavus (LFA) which is specific to -NeuAc. Immature mucous granules which are contiguous with the trans Golgi lamellae were weakly stained with RCA I, while LFA stained both immature and mature granules.The differences between each lectin's reactivity in the rough endoplasmic reticulum, in each compartment of the Golgi lamellae and in the secretory granules suggest that there are compositional and structural differences between the glycoconjugates in the respective cell organellae, reflecting the various processes of glycosylation in the gastric surface mucous cells.  相似文献

Summary Information regarding the relative levels of salt tolerance between cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) is lacking. The objectives of this study were to 1) develop a simple, quick and sensitive method of screening turfgrass species for NaCl tolerance and 2) to compare the relative salt tolerance of five cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Ram I, Adelphi, Baron, Bensun, and Nassau) to other known salt tolerant turfgrass species such as alkalaigrass (Puccinellia distans (L.) Parl. cv. Fults) and two cultivars of red fescue (Festuca rubra L. Dawson, and Checker).Alkalaigrass and both cultivars of red fescue retained a high level of salt tolerance compared to the Kentucky bluegrass cultivars. Significant variability in salt tolerance was apparent among the Kentucky bluegrass cultivars with Adelphi and Ram I exhibiting the best overall tolerance.  相似文献

Certain factors influencing phytoplankton productivity are accentuated in turbid waters. They include mixing, spectral quality shifts, scattering, light fluctuations, and overall light attenuation. Measurements of productivity is influenced by the presence of inorganic turbidity. Together with the above factors high turbidity causes difficulties to assess and model phytoplankton productivity. Estimations of B, Pm B, Ik and m only reflect on the physiological condition of the phytoplankton, which differs little between water types of temperate regions. Measurement of integral vertical productivity, efficiency and fractional absorption by the phytoplankton of light energy conversion, however, are greatly influenced by inorganic turbidity. Because of high ratios of mixing to euphotic depth, the critical mixing depth is one of the most important factors influencing overall productivity in turbid waters.  相似文献

Our objectives were to quantify and compare soil CO2 efflux of two dominant soil types in an old-growth neotropical rain forest in the Atlantic zone of Costa Rica, and to evaluate the control of environmental factors on CO2 release. We measured soil CO2 efflux from eight permanent soil chambers on six Oxisol sites. Three sites were developed on old river terraces (old alluvium) and the other three were developed on old lava flows (residual). At the same time we measured soil CO2 concentrations, soil water content and soil temperature at various depths in 6 soil shafts (3 m deep). Between old alluvium sites, the two-year average CO2 flux rates ranged from 117.3 to 128.9 mg C m–2 h–1. Significantly higher soil CO2 flux occurred on the residual sites (141.1 to 184.2 mg C m–2 h–1). Spatial differences in CO2 efflux were related to fine root biomass, soil carbon and phosphorus concentration but also to soil water content. Spatial variability in CO2 storage was high and the amount of CO2 stored in the upper and lower soil profile was different between old alluvial and residual sites. The major factor identified for explaining temporal variations in soil CO2 efflux was soil water content. During periods of high soil water content CO2 emission decreased, probably due to lower diffusion and CO2 production rates. During the 2-year study period inter-annual variation in soil CO2 efflux was not detected.  相似文献

Embryogenesis and plant regeneration were induced in isolated microspore culture of linseed (oilflax, Linum usitatissimum). Microspores underwent cell divison which led to either microcallus or embryoid formation, when they were cultured in a modified liquid Nitsch-Lichter-Nitsch medium (Lichter 1985) at two different incubation temperatures (30 and 35 °C); some embryoids and microcalli further developed to larger calli. After transfer of the microspore derived calli to a solid medium containing zeatin (Img 1–1) shoot induction was achieved from 36 to 66% of the calli. The highest frequency of regenerated plants was obtained in microspore cultures of the hybrid Atalante x Szegedi 62 (F1) at 30 °C, whereas for the second genotype Pedigree 2 x Kiszombori 41 (F2) the higher incubation temperature seemed to be more efficient. Shoots could be successfully rooted on an indole acetic acid containing medium and then transplanted to vermiculite and finally to soil. Soil acidity in the Great Plains of the USA can reduce forage and grain yields of winter wheat, primarily by Al toxicity. Indigenous cultivars may vary in seedling tolerance to Al toxicity, but the benefit that Al tolerance provides to forage and grain production is not well documented in this region. Backcrossed-derived lines of Chisholm and Century were selected with an additional gene from Atlas 66 conferring Al tolerance in solution culture. Our objective was to determine the impact of this source of Al tolerance on forage production prior to the jointing stage and subsequent grain yield. Experiments were conducted at several locations on non-limed (pH=4.5–4.7) and limed soils (pH=5.2-6.1) in Oklahoma. Two cultivars (TAM 105, susceptible; 2180, tolerant) with extreme differences in Al tolerance were used as controls . In limed conditions, forage and grain production did not differ between Al-tolerant and -susceptible genotypes, indicating a neutral effect of the Atlas 66 gene in the absence of Al toxicity. Despite visual differences in early-season plant vigor in non-limed acid soil, the Al-tolerant selections did not yield greater season-long forage than their susceptible parents. At sites where Al saturation in the non-limed soil exceeded 30%, spike production at maturity was nearly doubled in the Century background by the addition of Al tolerance, but final grain yield was not significantly improved. In the Chisholm background, grain yield was improved 50 to 74% by Al tolerance. The magnitude of the agronomic benefit of Al tolerance was highly influenced by the edaphic environment and genetic background. Acid soils of the Great Plains appear highly variable in Al toxicity; hence, consideration of the target environment is essential to predict the potential impact of Al tolerance selected in solution culture.  相似文献

The relationship of abscisic acid (ABA) and 2-trans-abscisic acid (t-ABA) to alternate bearing has been examined in Wilking mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) trees. Leaves, stems and buds of trees loaded with fruit (on trees) had 4.3, 6.0 and 2.2 fold higher ABA levels than the corresponding organs from off trees. Leaves had higher ABA levels than stems and buds in both on and off trees. t-ABA was non-detectable in Wilking leaf, stem and bud tissue. Amounts of t-ABA not exceeding 40% of the ABA content, were found in Shamouti and Valencia orange buds and in Wilking fruit peel.The elevated levels of ABA in on tree organs may reflect a stress imposed by the fruit overload.  相似文献

Cold tolerance of field grown plants and shoot cultures of a commercial sugarbeet cultivar, Hilma, was compared with that of two cultivars bred for improved cold tolerance, Monofeb and Winter Hybrid 88619. Leaves of Monofeb and Winter Hybrid 88619 showed an increase in frost tolerance compared to Hilma, as assessed by electrolyte leakage measurements, in both July, and November. However, all varieties exhibited acclimation in the latter month. Similar qualitative differences between cultivars were detected in shoot cultures only when maintained on low (1%) sucrose medium, without added plant growth regulators. The use of high (3%) sucrose and benzyladenine, which releases apical dominance producing multiple shoots, each contributed to a substantial lowering of the temperature at which cold-induced damage occurred in leaves. Under these conditions varietal differences were masked. I explore the specialization versus generalization paradigm in frugivory and seed dispersal. This view predicts that some tropical trees produce nutritious fruits adapted for use by a small coterie of specialized frugivores that provide reliable seed dissemination. Other tree species are expected to offer superabundant fruits of lower nutritional reward, relying instead on common opportunistic frugivores that are individually less reliable, but collectively disperse seeds effectively. Though widely referenced, many aspects of the paradigm are untested with tropical trees and avian frugivores, primarily because plant ecologists rarely determine whether specialist or generalist foragers are responsible for different patterns of seed distribution, while students of foraging behavior rarely determine the effects seed dispersal by different animals for survival of seeds or seedlings of specialist or generalist trees.Ecological paradigms provide alternative hypotheses, without evolutionary arguments. Keystone species have ecological effects disproportionate to their abundance; it is important for management considerations to know whether fruiting trees or frugivores serve as keystone mutualists in tropical forests. Alternatively, the extent to which vertebrate seed dispersers influence density-dependent seed, seedling, sapling, or adult mortality may have important consequences for spatial dispersion and population dynamics of tree species in tropical forests.  相似文献
