Proteus sp. are opportunistic microorganisms which cause urinary tract and wounds infections, bacteriaemia and sepsis. The aim of this study was analysis of prevalence of multidrug-resistant Proteus sp. strains in clinical specimens and evaluation of their susceptibility to selected antibiotics. The study was carried out of 1499 Proteus sp. strains were isolated in 2000-2003 from patients of departments and dispensaries of the University Hospital CM in Bydgoszcz UMK in Torun. The strains were identified on the basis of appearance of bacterial colonies on bloody and McConkey's agars, movement ability, indole and urease production and in questionable cases biochemical profile in ID GN or ID E (bio-Mérieux) tests was also included. Antibiotic susceptibility was tested by disk diffusion method. Isolated strains were regarded as multidrug-resistant when they were resistant to three kinds of antibiotics at least. Received Proteus sp. the most frequently belonged to P. mirabilis species (92.3%). Most of these bacteria were isolated from urine from patients of Rehabilitation Clinic. All of multidrug-resistant strains were resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins, 98.9% to co-trimoxazole, 77.7% to quinolones, 63.8% to tetracyclines, 38.5% to aminoglycosides, 19.3% to monobactams and 3.4% to carbapenems. Almost 25% multidrug-resistant Proteus sp. produced ESBL.  相似文献

A bacteriphage typing scheme for differentiating Proteus isolated from clinical specimens was developed. Twenty-one distinct patterns of lysis were seen when 15 bacteriophages isolated on 8 Proteus mirabilis, 1 P. vulgaris, and 1 P. morganii were used to type 162 of 189 (85.7%) P. mirabilis and P. vulgaris isolates. Seven phages isolated on 3 P. morganii were used to type 13 of 19 (68.4%) P. morganii isolates. Overall, 84.1% of the 208 isolates were lysed by at least 1 phage at routine test dilution (RTD) or 1,000 x RTD. Fifty isolates, retyped several weeks after the initial testing, showed no changes in lytic patterns. The phages retained their titers after storage at 4 C for several months. A computer analysis of the data showed that there was no relationship between the source of the isolate and bacteriophage type. This bacteriophage typing system may provide epidemiological information on strains involved in human infections.  相似文献

Development of the LLanos Orientales of Colombia, and access to underdeveloped areas in the Llanos, may create disease hazards to man and domestic animals or introduce exotic pathogens, creating reservoirs of infection for domestic animals and acting as limiting factors on the native wild species. A survey of wild animals common to the Llanos revealed a number of parasites indigenous to the area. A total total of 59 mammalian species, representing eight orders were examined. Haematozoa were represented by Trypanosoma cruzi, T. evansi and T. rangeli. Eight species of ticks were found: Amblyomma cajennense, A. auricularium, A. rotundatum, A. maculatum, A. longirostre, A. pacae, Ixodes luciae and Boophilus microplus. Four species of fleas were found: Rhopalopsyllus lugubris lugubris, R. australis tupinus, R. cacicus saevus and Polygenis klagesi samuelis. A species of Echinococcus was commonly found in Cuniculus paca. Serologic titers and/or isolations of pathogenic viral and bacterial agents generally indicated that the wildlife population had not been exposed to the diseases common to the domestic population. A low prevalence of titers to Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis was found in Cebus apella and Proechimys sp. Neutralizing antibodies to Group B viruses were found in Proechimys sp., Coendor sp. and Nectomys squamipes. Antibodies to Group C viruses were found in Proechimys sp. Serologic titers to Leptospira sejroe and L. tarassovi were found in Proechimys sp. and Didelphis marsupialis. L. tarassovi was isolated from Proechimys sp. Titers to Brucella were not found in 1964 animals. The significance of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Thirteen indole-producing, swarming strains of Proteus were identified by additional biochemical testing as being Proteus mirabilis. These strains were characterized by 40 biochemical tests and by susceptibility testing to 11 antibiotics. All produced ornithine decarboxylase and were susceptible to members of the penicillin-cephalosporin groups of antibiotics. These indole-positive strains are similar to indole-negative P. mirabilis and are distinctly different from P. vulgaris. For greatest accuracy and to insure greatest clinical relevancy, P. mirabilis and P. vulgaris should be distinguished from one another in the laboratory by performing both the indole and ornithine decarboxylase tests.  相似文献

Infant development in lion-tailed monkeys was observed during the first eight weeks after birth. A rapid decrease in the time spent in the closest association by the mother and the infant was seen between the first and second weeks. Between the second and fifth week there was a somewhat steady state with only marginal decrease in the time spent by the infant out of lap of the mother. However, during this time, a rapid decline in maternal cradling and restraining behaviour was seen. From the sixth week onwards, there was a rapid increase in the time spent by the infant out of contact with the mother. Independence of the infant during troop progression was seen only towards the eighth week, that too only marginal. Among the troop members the subadult females and the juvenile females showed the maximum interest in the infant. The former spent much more time than the juveniles interacting with the infant. The adult females showed only little interest in the infant while the adult male showed no interest at all. Infant snatching by subadult females and juvenile females was seen on many occasions. The infant remained in the possession of them from less than 1 min to more than 2 hr. This behaviour tended to decrease towards the sixth week.  相似文献

The activity of three alpha-(substituted-ureido) penicillins was evaluated in vitro against 599 clinical isolates of gram-negative bacilli, by use of the broth-dilution technique. At a concentration of 12.5 mug or less/ml, BL-P1597 inhibited 90% of isolates of Pseudomonas sp., 56% of Enterobacter sp., 67% of indole-positive Proteus spp., 72% of Escherichia coli, and 85% of Proteus mirabilis. BL-P1654 had similar activity, whereas BL-P1532 was much less active. At a concentration of 25 mug or less/ml, BL-P1597 also inhibited nearly 60% of isolates of Klebsiella sp. and nearly 40% of Serratia sp. BL-P1597 and BL-P1654 were as active as ampicillin and carbenicillin against E. coli and P. mirabilis. They were less active than carbenicillin against indole-positive Proteus spp. Both drugs were substantially more active than carbenicillin against Pseudomonas sp. A strain of Pseudomonas sp. which developed resistance to carbenicillin also developed resistance to the alpha-(substituted-ureido) penicillins simultaneously.  相似文献

Proteus sp. rods are ubiquitous bacteria, widespread in the environment and classified also as opportunistic human pathogens. The aim of our study was to evaluate susceptibility of Proteus mirabilis strains isolated from white stork (Ciconia ciconia) regarding as his natural bacterial flora, compare and discuss their results with data obtained from scientific literature for clinical strains of the same species. Susceptibility of 59 P. mirabilis strains was estimated for 27 antimicrobials using disc-diffusion method and the ability to produce extended spectrum beta-lactamases was evaluated by double disc synergy test. Environmental P. mirabilis strains isolated from white stork were assessed as more susceptible to most of the examined antimicrobials and production of extended spectrum beta-lactamases was not noted amongst them.  相似文献

Nonstructural protein σ1s is a critical determinant of hematogenous dissemination by type 1 reoviruses, which reach the central nervous system (CNS) by a strictly blood-borne route. However, it is not known whether σ1s contributes to neuropathogenesis of type 3 reoviruses, which disseminate by both vascular and neural pathways. Using isogenic type 3 viruses that vary only in σ1s expression, we observed that mice survived at a higher frequency following hind-limb inoculation with σ1s-null virus than when inoculated with wild-type virus. This finding suggests that σ1s is essential for reovirus virulence when inoculated at a site that requires systemic spread to cause disease. Wild-type and σ1s-null viruses produced comparable titers in the spinal cord, suggesting that σ1s is dispensable for invasion of the CNS. Although the two viruses ultimately achieved similar peak titers in the brain, loads of wild-type virus were substantially greater than those of the σ1s-null mutant at early times after inoculation. In contrast, wild-type virus produced substantially higher titers than the σ1s-null virus in peripheral organs to which reovirus spreads via the blood, including the heart, intestine, liver, and spleen. Concordantly, viral titers in the blood were higher following infection with wild-type virus than following infection with the σ1s-null mutant. These results suggest that differences in viral brain titers at early time points postinfection are due to limited virus delivery to the brain by hematogenous pathways. Transection of the sciatic nerve prior to hind-limb inoculation diminished viral spread to the spinal cord. However, wild-type virus retained the capacity to disseminate to the brain following sciatic nerve transection, indicating that wild-type reovirus can spread to the brain by the blood. Together, these results indicate that σ1s is not required for reovirus spread by neural mechanisms. Instead, σ1s mediates hematogenous dissemination within the infected host, which is required for full reovirus neurovirulence.  相似文献

Agoutis (Dasyprocta sp) are hystricomorph rodents belonging to the family Dasyproctidae. Utilization of agoutis in a research program of the National Institutes of Health necessitated the development of suitable methods for feeding, housing and collecting blood. The rodents were maintained successfully in conventional dog cages and kennels, and thrived on a diet of primate diet and apples. Physical examinations and periodic blood collections were best performed while agoutis were sedated with ketamine HCl (42-83 mg/kg, intramuscularly). Satisfactory sites for blood sampling were the cephalic, saphenous and jugular veins. Hematologic and serum chemical values established for the agouti were similar to those found in other rodents. Experimentally induced and naturally occurring diseases of agoutis were reviewed.  相似文献

African green monkeys (AGMs) are naturally infected with a simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVagm) that is nonpathogenic in its host. Although SIVagm is common and widespread, little is known about the mechanisms that govern its transmission. Since the earliest virus-host interactions may provide key insights into the nonpathogenic phenotype of SIVagm, we developed a mucosal transmission model for this virus. Using plasma from an acutely infected AGM as the virus inoculum, we exposed adult and juvenile AGMs, as well as pigtailed macaques (PTMs) as a nonnatural host control, by mucosal routes to increasing titers of virus and compared the doses needed to establish a productive infection. Four juvenile and four adult AGMs as well as two PTMs were intrarectally (IR) exposed, while two additional adult female AGMs were intravaginally (IVAG) exposed. No animal became infected following exposure to 10(5) RNA copies. Both PTMs but none of the AGMs became infected following exposure to 10(6) RNA copies. Finally, all adult AGMs and two of the four juvenile AGMs became infected following exposure to 10(7) RNA copies, acquiring either one (2 IR infected juveniles, 1 IR infected adult, 2 IVAG infected adults) or two (3 IR infected adults) transmitted founder viruses. These results were consistent with immunophenotypic data, which revealed a significant correlation between the percentage of CD4(+) T cells expressing CCR5 in the mucosa and the susceptibility to infection, in terms of both the viral dose and the numbers of transmitted founder viruses. Moreover, studies of uninfected AGMs showed that the fraction of CCR5-expressing CD4(+) T cells increased significantly with age. These results indicate that (i) AGMs are readily infected with SIVagm by both intrarectal and intravaginal routes, (ii) susceptibility to infection is proportional to the number of available CCR5(+) CD4(+) target cells in the mucosa, and (iii) the paucity of CCR5(+) CD4(+) target cells in infant and juvenile AGMs may explain the near absence of vertical transmission.  相似文献

The strains came from various countries; 24 were from urine, 17 from faeces (including one from a dog and one from a monkey), 12 from the respiratory tract (including nine from sputum), four from a cerebral abscess, 12 from miscellaneous sources and six from unknown sources. The protein patterns, which contained 45 to 50 discrete bands, were highly reproducible. The patterns of the 75 P. mirabilis cultures plus those of the type strains of six Proteus and Providencia species were used as the basis for two numerical analyses. In the first, which included all the protein bands, the P. mirabilis cultures formed nine clusters at the 85% S level. In the second analysis, in which the principal protein bands (in the 34.0–44.6 kDa range) were excluded, 74 of the 75 cultures of P. mirabilis formed a single cluster at the 77% S level distinct from the six Proteus and Providencia reference strains. The P. mirabilis strain which failed to cluster with the others had a background band pattern typical of the species in the lower molecular weight region but appeared to be less typical in the heavier bands. It is concluded that high resolution PAGE combined with computerized analysis of protein patterns provides the basis for typing clinical strains of P. mirabilis. Reference strains of each of the nine PAGE types identified are available from NCTC for inclusion in future studies.  相似文献

Preparations of culture liquid of three Bacullus licheniformis strains (S, 103, and 60.4) and the enzymatic preparation lysoamidase from culture liquid of Lysobacter sp. strain XL1 actively lysed preliminarily autoclaved cells of gram-negative bacteria Proteus vulgaris and P. mirabilis. Living Proteus cells treated with these enzymatic preparations were lysed during their subsequent autoclaving. Inoculation of enzyme-treated Proteus cells, taken either separately or in combination with one another and polymyxin B, into a rich medium led to cell repair and restoration of viability of culture.  相似文献

One hundred and six strains from the Proteus-Providence group and 27 other strains from the rest of the Enterobacteriaceae were subjected to 178 morphological. physiological and biochemical tests and the results analysed by computer. Most of the Proteus-Providence strains grouped into six main clusters; (1) Proteus mirabilis , (2) Proteus vulgaris , (3) Proteus morganii , (4) Providencia alcalifaciens, Shigella dysenteriae , (5) Proteus rettgeri , (6) Providencia stuartii . On the basis of these groupings a scheme has been drawn up for distinguishing between the different taxa in the Proteus-Providence group.  相似文献

Proteus sp. rods are opportunistic human pathogens. These microorganisms are mainly isolated from patients with urinary tract infections, particularly associated with using of biomaterials, on which surface they can form biofilm. The aim of our study was the estimation of Proteus mirabilis rods ability to form biofilm on the surface of 5 biomaterials (polychloride vinyl, silicone latex, polypropylene, polybutylen teraftalan and polyamide) using Richards' and quantitative method and comparison results of both methods. A total number of 84 P. mirabilis strains were included into the study. All of them were isolated in the Department of Clinical Microbiology University Hospital no. 1 of dr A. Jurasz Collegium Medicum of L. Rydygier in Bydgoszcz, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń between 2005 and 2008. Examined P. mirabilis strains formed heavy biofilm with statistically significantly values on the surface of silicone latex than on polychloride vinyl and on polypropylene surface than polybutylen teraftalen or polyamide. High correlation of both methods was established. The Richards' method can be used to quick identification of P. mirabilis biofilm.  相似文献

目的对一株人工哺育期引发恒河猴婴猴腹泻的奇异变形杆菌进行了鉴定,为实验猕猴疾病检测、鉴别诊断提供参考依据。方法通过培养特性、菌落形态、染色、生化试验和血清学诊断鉴别等检查,对分离菌株进行初步鉴定,同时,对分离菌株进行致病性试验及药敏试验。结果通过表型生物学特性鉴定,并结合血清学诊断鉴别方法,确证该分离菌株为奇异变形杆菌,应用药敏试验筛选出了高度敏感的抗菌药,控制了该病的继续发生,致病性试验证明,该分离菌株对小白鼠有高致病性。结论分离到的奇异变形杆菌是导致本次婴猴腹泻死亡的病原菌,该菌为条件致病菌,对实验猕猴和研究人员均有潜在的危害,尽管该菌不是国家标准要求排除的病原菌,但该菌引发的传染病将对动物实验造成严重影响,故应引起高度重视。  相似文献

Proteus mirabilis was the predominant cause of acute diabetes-associated pyelonephritis occurring spontaneously in male MM mice until they were segregated in a new environment. Thereafter Pasteurella pneumotropica and Streptococcus faecalis emerged collectively as the most common causal organisms, the pyelonephritis became more chronic and Proteus mirabilis isolates from faeces and urine produced atypical non-swarming colonies on blood agar plates. This did not account for the reduced pathogenicity of Proteus mirabilis; when MM males were returned to the original environment the pyelonephritis again became acute but was associated with the atypical type of Proteus mirabilis although the normal type was abundant in the environment. The MM mice were Caesarean-derived and cross-fostered shortly before their transfer to the second environment, which probably accounts for their changed microbial status, but the reason for the emergence of the atypical type of Proteus mirabilis is not understood. The acute nature of the male MM pyelonephritis when caused by Proteus mirabilis parallels the situation described in other animals and humans.  相似文献

The DA strain of Theiler's virus, a murine picornavirus, causes a persistent infection of glial cells of the white matter of the spinal cord, associated with chronic inflammation and primary demyelination. The GDVII strain causes an acute fatal grey matter encephalomyelitis. We characterized the target cells of GDVII and DA viruses 4 days following intracerebral inoculation, and we compared the levels of viral RNA within these cells. GDVII virus infected approximately 10 times more cells than DA virus. Whereas GDVII virus infected neurons exclusively, DA virus infected also astrocytes and possible macrophage-microglial cells. The levels of viral RNA in neurons infected with GDVII and DA viruses were of the same order. These results show that DA virus infects glial cells already at the beginning of the disease and that the more efficient spread of GDVII virus is probably not due to a higher level of RNA replication per cell.  相似文献
