In this survey plastic responses to light intensity and planting density were examined in three Lamium species (L. purpureum, L. album and L. maculatum). Low light intensity enhanced plant height, length and width of leaves, but reduced number of shoots and leaves, as well as root and shoot weights. Higher density resulted in smaller plants and leaves, but had significant effect on module number (shoots and leaves) only on older plants. The effect of light intensity on measured traits was greater than the effect of density, and consistent with predictions about plastic responses on light intensity variation. Generally, the three Lamium species differed in the magnitude but not in patterns of plasticity. However, associations of analyzed traits with fitness significantly differed among species as well as among light treatments.  相似文献

The marine ectoparasitic copepod of salmonids, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer), is a major pest of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) causing great economic impact. The spatial scales over which L. salmonis populations in different salmon farms are typically connected, and the temporal scales over which L. salmonis from the same farm typically undergo genetic change are largely unknown. These questions were posed in a small-scale geographic study of population structure in L. salmonis from four salmon farms, along the northwest and west coasts of Ireland, using two outgroups from Norway and Canada. The temporal stability of genetic composition was also studied in samples collected quarterly during one year from one salmon farm in Ireland. Genetic composition in L. salmonis was characterised using four nuclear microsatellites. Significant but low genetic differentiation was observed between all sites (F ST = 0.08), with no evidence that differentiation was correlated with geographic distance. Temporal genetic differentiation was also evident (F ST = 0.07). An analysis of all L. salmonis samples except the ones from Norway detected two separate clusters. Each cluster contained both geographical and temporal samples. These results are consistent with a population model in which L. salmonis in salmon farms along the northwest and west coasts of Ireland are not isolated, but are potentially subject to (i) localised ecological factors at the particular farm sites or (ii) selection post-settlement or a combination thereof.  相似文献

The degree of relationships withinLactuca sativa and three wild relativesL. serriola, L. saligna, andL. virosa was studied by observing the performance, vigour and fertility of the F 1 hybrids obtained from crosses made in and between the four species. The crosses ofL. saligna ×L. virosa and the reciprocal crosses produced no hybrids.L. saligna andL. virosa are the least related of the four species.L. sativa ×L. serriola and the reciprocal crosses were successful and produced fertile hybrids These two species are genetically very closely related.L. saligna is known to produce, as a female parent, hybrids withL. sativa andL. serriola. Now the reciprocal cross was successful for the first time, so the unability to obtain hybrids in the past was based on the choice of accessions and not caused by unilateral incompatibility.L. virosa ×L. sativa and the reciprocal combination produced hybrids. The combinationL. serriola ×L. virosa produced hybrids with very limited fertility. In contrast to earlier reports (sterile hybrids) one combination of the reciprocal cross too produced hybrids with very limited fertility.—Some of theL. saligna ×L. sativa (and reciprocal) hybrids were found to look strikingly likeL. serriola. This adds evidence for the descent ofL. serriola andL. sativa:L. saligna also made part of the ancestral complex of the cultivated lettuce.  相似文献

Summary Earlier students of the origin of Lotus corniculatus suggested that this tetraploid species arose as an autotetraploid of the closely related diploid species L. tenuis or L. alpinus. More recent studies suggested that L. alpinus and L. japonicus could be ancestral forms. The present study of tannin content, phenolic content, cyanide production, morphology, cytogenetics, Rhizobium specificity and self-incompatibility in the corniculatus group virtually excludes the possibility that L. corniculatus could have arisen through autopolyploidy of L. tenuis or L. alpinus, and suggests that L. corniculatus arose through hybridization of L. alpinus and/or L. tenuis (probably as female parent) with L. uliginosus (probably as male parent), followed by chromosome doubling in the hybrid.  相似文献

L. sativa L. cultivars were compared morphologically with accessions ofL. saligna L.,L. serriola L., andL. virosa L. in order to define the infra- and interspecific variation. Multivariate analysis (principal component analysis) distinguished four groups corresponding with the four species. Infraspecific variation (e.g., colour, leaf shape) withinL. sativa is the largest, because breeding has caused a large variation in vegetative features; infraspecific variation withinL. serriola is also large. Three plants of one accession were placed betweenL. sativa andL. serriola because they showed morphological characteristics of both species. They are still classified asL. sativa. The morphological differences betweenL. sativa andL. serriola are too large to consider these two as one species. The descent of the cultivar groups and the four species is described.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to investigate whether sucrose synthase (Susy) catalyses a readily reversible reaction in vivo in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers, Ricinus communis L. cotyledons, and heterotrophic Chenopodium rubrum L. cell-suspension cultures. (i) The contents of sucrose, fructose, UDP and UDP-glucose were measured and the mass-action ratio compared with the theoretical equilibrium constant. In all three tissues the values were similar. (ii) Evidence for rapid turnover of label in the sucrose pool was obtained in pulse-chase experiments with potato discs and with intact tubers attached to the plant. The unidirectional rates of sucrose synthesis and degradation were considerably higher than the net flux through the sucrose pool in the tubers. (iii) Labelling of the glucosyl and fructosyl moieties of sucrose from [14C]glucose in the presence of unlabelled fructose provided evidence that Susy contributes to the movement of label into sucrose. Methods for estimating the contribution of sucrose-phosphate synthase and Susy are presented and it is shown that their relative contribution varies. For example, the contribution of Susy is high in developing tubers and is negligible in harvested tubers which contain low Susy activity. (iv) The absolute values of the forward (v+1) and backward (v?1) reaction direction of Susy are calculated from the kinetic labelling data. The estimated values of v+1 and v?1 are comparable, and much higher than the net flux through the sucrose pool. (v) The estimated concentrations of the substrates and products of Susy in tubers are comparable to the published K m values for potato-tuber Susy. (vi) It is concluded that Susy catalyses a readily reversible reaction in vivo and the relevance of this conclusion is discussed with respect to the regulation of sucrose breakdown and the role of Susy in phloem unloading.  相似文献

Primordial shoot explants excised from buds of one Larix decidua tree, about 30 years old, produced more adventitious buds, elongating into shoots, when grown on half strength Litvay medium than when grown on other basal media. Thidiazuron and N6-benzyladenine (BA) were equally effective in adventitious bud induction. In a comparative study of 30-year-old L. decidua, L. leptolepis, L. eurolepis, and L. laricina trees, explants from L. eurolepis and L. decidua produced a high number of cultures with adventitious buds that elongated into shoots; those from L. leptolepis were less productive, and those from L. laricina failed to form adventitious buds. The highest response was obtained with material collected in August and September, and in March and April; the lowest response occurred in explants from the October collection.  相似文献

The complete protocols for long-term micropropagation of some cultivars of four lupin species: Lupinus luteus, L. albus, L. angustifolius and L. mutabilis were elaborated. The shoots were regenerated in vitro via induction of axillary buds development. Plantlets were multiplicated on lowered salts MS-derived media containing BAP in diverse and generally low concentrations. Significant differences in regeneration capacity between species and cultivars were observed. The highest multiplication ratio revealed L. mutabilis and L. luteus. Regenerated shoots were rooted in vitro on low-salts MS-derived media with B5 vitamins. Media were supplemented with different auxins that affected roots formation of particular species and cultivars. Rooting ability of regenerated shoots decreased rapidly through in vitro culture. For that reason, grafting was applied as an alternative method of transfer of shoots to in vivo conditions. This method turned out to be successful for the majority of studied species and cultivars. Complete rooted or grafted plantlets were cultivated in pots with perlit in greenhouse. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

Chromosome banding patterns obtained with C- and N- banding, and AgNO3 staining were studied in somatic metaphase complements of fourLactuca species.L. sativa andL. serriola have almost identical chromosome morphology, andL. saligna differs only slightly from them, butL. virosa is quite distinct from the other species. A gross comparison of the banded karyotypes suggests a closer relationship ofL. saligna toL. sativa/serriola than toL. virosa. Our data agree with the results of previous crossing experiments in these species but conflict partly with recent RFLP data which indicate a closer phenetic relationship ofL. saligna toL. virosa than toL. sativa/serriola. Such a discrepancy may be explained assuming that domestication ofL. sativa/serriola resulted in an increased selection pressure on unique DNA sequences as demonstrated by the RFLP data. Differential evolution of specific heterochromatin classes (and presumably of highly repetitive DNA classes), as revealed by chromosome banding techniques was not linked to domestication. Thus the disparity in conclusions about relationship (in terms of genetic similarity) as based on the different experimental approaches reflects a non-parallel evolution of highly repetitive vs. unique DNA classes.  相似文献

We examined the capacity of several Old-World lupin species (Lupinus luteus L., L. hispanicus Boiss. et Reuter and L. angustifolius L.) and one species of a New-World lupin (L. mutabilis Sweet) to form cluster roots under a range of conditions in solution culture. The effect of the synthetic auxin, IBA (indole-3-butyric acid), on cluster-root development in L. luteus and L. albus L. provided with an adequate phosphorus (P) supply was also investigated. In addition, the effect of a high nitrate-N (NO3-N) supply on the efflux of citrate and malate from roots of L. angustifolius was examined to determine if specific regions of the root system exuded these organic anions. When P-deficient, L. hispanicus, L. luteus and L. mutabilis formed cluster roots that secreted organic anions. Citrate was generally the dominant organic anion exuded, although succinate was also exuded in large quantities from L. luteus. Citrate efflux by L. hispanicus and L. luteus was at least comparable to that reported for P-deficient L. albus[up to 1.092 nmol g–1 fresh weight (FW) s–1], but was over an order of magnitude lower in L. mutabilis (0.036 nmol g–1 FW s–1). Citrate and malate were not detected in significant amounts from either the lateral roots or the root tips of any species grown under P-sufficient or -deficient conditions. Citrate efflux from cluster roots of L. luteus showed a diurnal pattern, similar to that reported for L. albus, with maximum efflux during the day, and declining to a minimum before dawn. IBA added to the nutrient solution induced cluster-root formation on both L. albus and L. luteus at concentrations of P that would normally suppress the production of these roots. However, the IBA-induced cluster roots did not exude significant amounts of citrate. Although L. angustifolius did not produce cluster roots when P-deficient, it produced cluster-like root structures that exuded citrate (0.053 nmol g–1 FW s–1) when grown at a high nitrate-N (NO3-N) supply. L. angustifolius did not exude significant citrate or malate from lateral roots or root tips when grown at either high or low NO3-N supply. Our findings for L. hispanicus and L. luteus are the first reports of cluster-root formation in response to P deficiency for these Old-World species, and for L. mutabilis, it is the first report of cluster roots for a New-World lupin species. These reports indicate that evolutionary and biogeographical aspects of cluster-root formation in the genus Lupinus need to be revised. Furthermore, investigation is warranted to determine the capacity of species of the large group of New-World lupins to form cluster roots in soils of their native habitats.  相似文献

In calcareous soils, genotypes of Lupinus albus L. generally grow poorly, resulting in stunted plants that often develop lime-induced chlorosis. In contrast, some genotypes of L. pilosus Murr. occur naturally in calcareous soils without developing any visible symptoms of stress. Some genotypic variation for tolerance to calcareous soil does exist in L. albus and the tolerance mechanisms need to be determined. The adaptation through root system morphological plasticity of L. albus and L. pilosus, to heterogeneous limed soil profiles (pH 7.8) containing either patches of acid (non-limed) soil, or vertically split between acid and limed soil, was investigated. When grown in the presence of patches of acid soil, L. albus had a 52% greater shoot dry weight and visibly greener leaves compared with plants grown in the homogeneous limed soil. Total root dry matter in the acid-soil patches was greater than in the control limed-soil patches. This was due to a four-fold increase in the cluster root mass, accounting for 95% of the root dry matter in the acid-soil patch. Although these cluster roots secreted no more citric acid per unit mass than those in the limed soil did, their greater mass resulted in a higher citrate concentration in the surrounding soil. L. pilosus responded to the patches of acid soil in a manner comparable with L. albus. When grown in the homogeneous limed soil, L. pilosus had a greater maximum net CO2 assimilation rate (Pmax) than L. albus, however, the Pmax of both species increased after they had accessed a patch of acid soil. Differences were apparent between the L. albus genotypes grown in soil profiles split vertically into limed and acid soil. A genotype by soil interaction occurred in the partitioning between soils of the cluster roots. The genotype La 674 was comparable with L. pilosus and produced over 11% of its cluster roots in the limed soil, whereas the other genotypes produced only 1–3% of their cluster roots in the limed soil. These results indicate L. pilosus is better adapted to the limed soil than L. albus, but that both species respond to a heterogeneous soil by producing mainly cluster roots in an acid-soil patch. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

An antiserum raised against deglycosylated hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins (HPGPs) from melon (Cucumis melo L.) was used to study the relationship between Rhizobium infection and induction of HRGPs in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) root nodule cells infected with either the wild-type or a C4-dicarboxylic acid mutant strain of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli. In effective nodules, where fixation of atmospheric dinitrogen is taking place, HRGPs were found to accumulate mainly in the walls of infected cells and in peribacteroid membranes surrounding groups of bacteroids. Internal ramifications of the peribacteroid membrane were also enriched in HRGPs whereas the peribacteroid space as well as the bacteroids themselves were free of these glycoproteins. In mutant-induced root nodules, HRGPs were specifically associated with the electron-dense, laminated structures formed in plastids as a reaction to infection by this mutant. The presence of HRGPs was also detected in the host cytoplasm. The aberrant distribution of HRGPs in infected cells of mutant-induced nodules likely reflects one aspect of the altered host metabolism in relation to peribacteroid-membrane breakdown. The possibility that the antiserum used for HRGP localization may have cross-reacted with ENOD 2 gene products is discussed in relation to amino-acid sequences and sites of accumulation.  相似文献
