The family Zetorchestidae is a morphologically and ecologically diverse group assigned to the higher oribatid mites (Brachypylina). We addressed the phylogeny of the family by including species of the genera Belorchestes, Litholestes, Microzetorchestes and Zetorchestes. We also analysed the affinities of the putative sister taxon (Eremaeidae), investigating Eremaeus and Eueremaeus. Zetorchestidae, Eremaeidae and Niphocepheidae were recently combined in one superfamily (Zetorchestoidea). These taxa were placed into a wider phylogenetic context by adding other presumably closely related taxa. Phylogenetic analyses based upon nuclear and mitochondrial DNA‐sequences revealed the monophyly of the Zetorchestidae as well as of all investigated species and genera of this family. Ancestral state reconstruction of jumping ability in latter family, moreover, suggested reverse character evolution within the studied zetorchestid taxa. Genetic diversity of the genera Eremaeus and Eueremaeus turned out to be higher than known, suggesting the existence of cryptic species. However, none of our analyses supported a sister group relationship among Zetorchestidae and Eremaeidae. Moreover, all calculated trees show a paraphyletic position between Zetorchestidae respectively Eremaeidae and Niphocepheidae.  相似文献

Processes occurring during the early life stages of corals are important for the replenishment of coral assemblages and the resilience of coral reefs. However, the factors influencing early life stages of corals are not well understood, and the role of micro-topographic complexity for habitat associations of juvenile corals is largely unexplored. This study investigated the microhabitat distribution patterns of early life stages of corals and a potential macroalgal competitor (Turbinaria ornata) across two reef zones (reef crest and outer reef flat) on Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. In both reef zones, both corals and T. ornata were significantly more abundant in concealed microhabitats than in semi-concealed or open microhabitats (GLMM: P < 0.001). The prevalence of juvenile corals and T. ornata within concealed environments suggests that they might be effective refuges from grazing by herbivorous fishes. The density of juvenile corals was positively related, and density of T. ornata negatively related to the abundance of two groups of herbivorous fishes, pairing rabbitfishes, and surgeonfishes in the genus Zebrasoma (BEST ENV-BIO: r s  = 0.72, P < 0.01), which feed in concealed microhabitats. This correlative evidence suggests that crevices may be important for early life stages of both coral and macroalgae, and that a specific suite of crevice-feeding fishes may influence benthic community dynamics in these microhabitats.  相似文献

Photoperiod plays an important role in controlling the feeding rhythmicity of juvenile fishes. Studies on feeding and spatial distribution pattern were made on wild populations of different juvenile stages of Chitala chitala, a threatened species in India. Results indicated that the prey preference of the fish increased with advancement of developmental stages. Moreover, nocturnal feeding was found to be more significant in the juveniles. Thus, feeding pattern of the different juvenile stages of Chitala is characterized by voracious predatory activity at dark condition. The vector controlling potential of the juvenile stages of Chitala specifically on mosquito and chironomid larvae was also significant. Studies on the distribution pattern of juvenile fishes were made with various combinations, viz. with or without food, in open surface and structured environments and observed during day as well as in dark regime. The juvenile distribution was clumped in open and closed environment during day time to minimize the chances of predation and juvenile mortality irrespective of food availability. A random distribution of juvenile fishes seemed to be advantageous for increasing feeding activity as observed in the experiment. This study is a pointer to the survival strategy of the larvae of C. chitala in their natural habitat which may be important from the perspective of conservation.  相似文献

The morphology of juveniles of Archegozetes longisetosus Aoki, 1965 (Trhypochthoniidae), and two members of Malaconothridae, Trimalaconothrus angulatus Willmann, 1931, and Malaconothrus monodactylus (Michael, 1888) is described and illustrated, and the tritonymph of A. longisetosus and all juvenile stages of T. angulatus are described and illustrated for the first time. The juveniles of these species differ mainly by the presence of setae f2 and h3 in the larva, seta exs and pattern of cuticle in the nymphs, and some setal formulae. Based on the morphology of juvenile stages and adults, the relationship between Malaconothridae and Trhypochthoniidae is discussed, and keys to the larvae and nymphs of some European species of these families are presented.  相似文献

Several bacteriological surveys were performed from 1994 to 1996 at different Litopenaeus vannamei hatcheries (in Ecuador) and shrimp farms (in Mexico). Samples were taken from routine productions of healthy and diseased L. vannamei larvae, postlarvae, and their culture environment and from healthy and diseased juveniles and broodstock. In Ecuador, the dominant bacterial flora associated with shrimp larvae showing symptoms of zoea 2 syndrome, mysis mold syndrome, and bolitas syndrome has been determined. Strains were characterized by Biolog metabolic fingerprinting and identified by comparison to a database of 850 Vibrio type and reference strains. A selection of strains was further genotypically fine typed by AFLP. Vibrio alginolyticus is predominantly present in all larval stages and is associated with healthy nauplius and zoea stages. AFLP genetic fingerprinting shows high genetic heterogeneity among V. alginolyticus strains, and the results suggest that putative probiotic and pathogenic strains each have specific genotypes. V. alginolyticus was found to be associated with larvae with the zoea 2 syndrome and the mysis mold syndrome, while different Vibrio species (V. alginolyticus and V. harveyi) are associated with the bolitas syndrome. V. harveyi is associated with diseased postlarvae, juveniles, and broodstock. The identities of the strains identified as V. harveyi by the Biolog system could not be unambiguously confirmed by AFLP genomic fingerprinting. Vibrio strain STD3-988 and one unidentified strain (STD3-959) are suspected pathogens of only juvenile and adult stages. V. parahaemolyticus, Photobacterium damselae, and V. mimicus are associated with juvenile and adult stages.  相似文献

This paper describes the nature and titre of juvenile hormone at different developmental stages of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, determined by a selective mass-spectroscopic detection technique, High levels of juvenile hormone III were observed in long-day beetles, whereas low titres occurred in pre-diapause and diapause adults. The level of juvenile hormone III in larvae was low compared with reproductive adults, whereas hardly any juvenile hormone could be detected in pupae. We were not able to detect juvenile hormones I or II. The results agree well with previously reported data using the Galleria bioassay.  相似文献

Mesostigmatic mites Lobogynioides andreinii (Berlese, 1910) are reported for the first time from Eastern Europe (Ukraine: Odessa and Zakarpattia Provinces, Crimea) and Caucasus (Russia: Krasnodar Territory). The generic confinedness of this species needs clarification. The family Diplogyniidae is mentioned for the fauna of Ukraine for the first time. Adult mites were found on adults of Hololepta plana (Sulzer, 1776) (Coleoptera, Histeridae) and on larvae of Cucujus sp. (Coleoptera, Cucujidae) and Pyrochroa sp. (Coleoptera, Pyrochroidae) under the bark of poplar (rarely, alder). The juvenile stages of L. andreinii obtained in the laboratory are described for the first time. In the laboratory, beetles H. plana and mature L. andreinii were fed on drosophilid larvae. Adult L. andreinii mites, phoresing on H. plana, demonstrate kleptoparasitic behavior, consuming part of prey of their beetle hosts. The juvenile stages of L. andreinii are free living predators; in the laboratory, they feed on nematodes. The development of L. andreinii from egg to adult takes 48–60 and more days at 18–22°C. The phoresy of L. andreinii is characterized as an obligatory ecoethological phoresy according to Camerik (2009); H. plana is the preferable host of L. andreinii.  相似文献

Population growth rates (λ) of the riparian tree Aesculus turbinata varied from 0.9988 to 1.0524 spatiotemporally. We conducted a series of pair-wise demographic and matrix analyses, including randomization tests, three types of life table response experiments (LTREs), analysis of variance and χ2 tests, to test which life stages had the greatest effect on this variation in λ. Randomization tests detected significant variations in λ between plots affected or not by typhoons in three habitats and between periods with high and low recruitment in one habitat. Mixed-level LTREs identified that the demographic processes and life stages that had the strongest effect on the actual variation in λ were: (1) progressions of small and intermediate juveniles and (2) founding process from seeds to 1-year-old seedlings. These juvenile stages had medium sensitivities and variances that explained high upper-level LTRE contributions. Lower-level LTREs showed that the vital rates contributing the most were the growth rates of these juvenile stages. These findings demonstrate that progression from one stage to the next, growth rates of 1-year-old seedlings, and stunted aging juveniles are the most important stages in the population dynamics of this long-lived primary tree species. Transition matrix elements with high elasticities had little effect on the variation in λ, indicating that high-elasticity vital rates do not necessarily drive variation in population growth. As compared with the results of randomization tests, significant differences in vital rates examined using ANOVA or χ2 tests showed that typhoon disturbance had the greatest effect on the demographic parameters of individual trees.  相似文献

Influx and net flux of amino acids into veliger, pediveliger, and juvenile stages of the oyster, Ostrea edulus (L.), were examined. Influx of alanine and glycine was determined using 14C-labelled substrates and monitoring the disappearance of radioactivity in the medium. Net influx was determined fluorometrically by following the disappearance of primary amines from solutions containing known substrates. Rates of influx and net influx are comparable for juvenile Ostrea down to ambient substrate levels of 2 μM. Net influx of amino acids into veliger and pediveliger larvae occurs at all concentrations examined (9 μM minimum). Rates of maximum influx (Jmaxi) and ambient substrate concentration at which influx is half-maximal (Kt) are reported for each stage. The Kt for glycine and alamine influx is 35–40 μM, decreasing to ≈ 15 μM in 1.5 mm sized juvenile oysters.  相似文献

The Early Cambrian organism Olivooides is known from both embryonic and post-embryonic stages and, consequently, it has the potential to yield vital insights into developmental evolution at the time that animal body plans were established. However, this potential can only be realized if the phylogenetic relationships of Olivooides can be constrained. The affinities of Olivooides have proved controversial because of the lack of knowledge of the internal anatomy and the limited range of developmental stages known. Here, we describe rare embryonic specimens in which internal anatomical features are preserved. We also present a fuller sequence of fossilized developmental stages of Olivooides, including associated specimens that we interpret as budding ephyrae (juvenile medusae), all of which display a clear pentaradial symmetry. Within the framework of a cnidarian interpretation, the new data serve to pinpoint the phylogenetic position of Olivooides to the scyphozoan stem group. Hypotheses about scalidophoran or echinoderm affinities of Olivooides can be rejected.  相似文献

One to two hundred nematodes from each of seven Xiphinema americanum-group populations were measured to determine the range of stylet and body lengths for juveniles and adults. First-stage juveniles were identified by the position of the replacement odontostyle (i.e., the tip of the replacement odontostyle overlapped the base of the odontophore). Nematodes were identified as second stage if the functional odontostyle was the same length as the replacement odontostyle of the first stage. Subsequent stages were similarly identified by establishing the range of corresponding replacement and functional odontostyle lengths. In all populations examined, this procedure created natural divisions that clearly grouped nematodes by stylet and body length. Presumably these groups identified all juvenile and adult stages. Populations of X. americanum, X. rivesi, and X. californicum from the United States had three juvenile stages, but a population of X. pachtaicum from Bulgaria had four juvenile stages.  相似文献

Juvenile development of the Middle Cambrian agnostid trilobite Pentagnostus proanabarensis Fedoseev, 1999 is studied. A sequence of eight juvenile stages is defined based on changes in morphology and measurements. Three of them belong to meraspid degree 0, another three refer to meraspid degree 1, and two represent early holaspid stages. Neither the frequency distribution of the length of cephalons and pygidia nor the length-width scatter diagrams give clear clusters of molts; the number of juvenile molts can be estimated through the analysis of the posteroaxis length distribution. Thus, the measurements and morphology of some juvenile pygidia with vestiges of the pleural and postaxial furrows allow reconstruction of the number of segments during individual growth. At the initial stage of development, the pygidial axis of P. proanabarensis probably had four segments, the pygidial axis increased up to no less than six segments in adults.  相似文献

A population of Xiphinema macroacanthum Lamberti, Roca & Agostinelli, 1989 originating from olive orchards in Brindisi, Italy and containing both adults and all juvenile stages, is described and illustrated. The first juvenile stage is reported for the first time. Molecular characterisation of this species, using the D2–D3 expansion domains of the 28S rDNA and ITS region, was carried out. PCR–RFLP analyses of the ribosomal gene regions determined species-specific patterns that clearly differentiate X. macroacanthum. Sequences of the D2–D3 domains and the partial 18S-ITS1 rRNA genes were analysed using several methods for inferring phylogeny to reconstruct the relationships between X. macroacanthum and other Xiphinema species.  相似文献

When two-day-old female Leptinotarsa decemlineata were starved, their corpus allatum activity, as measured by the radiochemical in vitro assay, was significantly reduced after 24 hr. Such a reduction was not observed when the nerve connections between the central nervous system and the retrocerebral complex were severed and the beetles starved up to 5 days. In some experiments, the rate of juvenile hormone biosynthesis in vitro, was substantiated by measurement of the juvenile hormone titre in the haemolymph by physico-chemical methods. It is concluded that intact nervous connections between the central nervous system and the corpora allata are essential for restraining the juvenile hormone biosynthesis during the initial stages of starvation.Corpora allata from 1-day starved insects were considerably stimulated in vitro by farnesenic acid indicating that juvenile hormone synthesis is controlled enzymatically at a stage prior to the final two steps in the pathway. However, on day 5 of starvation, rate-limitation may occur after formation of this intermediate, since farnesenic acid stimulation was much less at this time.Corpora allata of adult females newly emerged from the soil were activated within 4 hr regardless of feeding.  相似文献

The southern king crab, Lithodes santolla Molina, is distributed in cold-temperate and subantarctic waters ranging from the southeastern Pacific island of Chiloé (Chile) and the deep Atlantic waters off Uruguay, south to the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina/Chile). Recent investigations have shown that its complete larval development from hatching to metamorphosis, comprising three zoeal stages and a megalopa, is fully lecithotrophic, i.e. independent of food. In the present study, larvae were individually reared in the laboratory at seven constant temperatures ranging from 1 to 18 °C, and rates of survival and development through successive larval and early juvenile stages were monitored throughout a period of 1 year. The highest temperature (18 °C) caused complete mortality within 1 week; only a single individual moulted under this condition, 2 days after hatching, to the second zoeal stage, while all other larvae died later in the zoea I stage. At the coldest condition (1 °C), 71% of the larvae reached the zoea III stage, but none of these moulted successfully to a megalopa. A temperature of 3 °C allowed for some survival to the megalopa stage (17-33% in larvae obtained from two different females), but only a single individual passed successfully, 129 days after hatching, through metamorphosis to the first juvenile crab instar. At all other experimental conditions (6, 9, 12 and 15 °C), survival through metamorphosis varied among temperatures and two hatches from 29% to 90% without showing a consistent trend. The time of nonfeeding development from hatching to metamorphosis lasted, on average, from 19 days at 15 °C to 65 days at 6 °C. The relationship between the time of development through individual larval or juvenile stages (D) and temperature (T) was described as a power function (D=aTb, or log[D]=log[a]blog[T]). The same model was also used to describe the temperature dependence of cumulative periods of development from hatching to later larval or juvenile stages. One year after hatching, the 7th (6 °C) to 9th (15 °C) crab instar was reached. Under natural temperature conditions in the region of origin of our material (Beagle Channel, Argentina), L. santolla should reach metamorphosis in October-December, i.e. ca. 2 months after hatching (taking place in winter and early spring). Within 1 year from hatching, the crabs should grow approximately to juvenile instars VII-VIII. Our results indicate that the early life-history stages of L. santolla tolerate moderate cold stress as well as planktonic food-limitation in winter, implying that this species is well adapted to subantarctic environments with low temperatures and a short seasonal plankton production.  相似文献

Juveniles of the common red rock crab of the Northeastern Pacific, Cancer productus, display a stunning diversity of colours and patterns, while adults all have the same drab colouration. Although this is widely known, key questions remain: (1) Does the frequency of different juvenile colours or patterns vary among collection sites or seasonally? (2) Does juvenile colour polymorphism reflect genetic heterogeneity or phenotypic plasticity in response to variable environmental conditions? (3) Do juveniles of different colours or patterns prefer substrata of different heterogeneity or brightness? We therefore: (i) described the variation in colour and pattern of juvenile C. productus; (ii) tested for associations between colour/pattern morphs and crab size, collection site, and season, in the field; (iii) conducted preliminary tests for habitat preferences (background colour, substratum type, light level) of different colour/pattern morphs in laboratory experiments, and (iv) tested the effect of diet (mussels versus shrimp) and feeding rate (high versus low) on juvenile colour/pattern. We describe 30 phenotypes that embrace a wide range of colour and pattern variants. The proportions of these phenotypes did not vary significantly among four collection sites, but they did vary significantly with season: over the summer and fall, juvenile colour and pattern variation was gradually replaced by the uniform adult colouration. The number of crabs displaying adult colouration also increased with crab size. Laboratory experiments suggest no significant preferences of different juvenile morphs for different backgrounds, substrata, or light levels. Diet (mussels versus shrimp) and feeding frequency had no effect on colour/pattern. Collectively, these results, although limited in scope, are not consistent with two likely hypotheses that could explain the extensive colour and pattern variation in juvenile C. productus: (i) selection for background matching by different cryptic forms and (ii) direct effects of diet or feeding rate on colour or pattern. Most probably, the large variety of different juvenile morphs is a result of frequency-dependent selection in which abundant variants are attacked disproportionately often and rarer forms are favoured. Juvenile colour polymorphism in C. productus may reduce the vulnerability to visual predators, impede the formation of a search image, and consequently decrease the risk of predation during the juvenile stages.  相似文献
