We examined the relationship between local abundance, habitat position and habitat breadth across bird species in a large Atlantic forest reserve in Brazil. This appears to be the first such study for any rainforest taxon. Habitat position for a species was its mean foraging height, along with the mean scores on three principal habitat axes for census stations at which it was recorded. Habitat breadth was the standard deviation of recorded foraging heights and the standard deviations of "positive" station scores on the habitat axes. We also examined differences in habitat position and breadth between endemic and wide-ranging taxa and amongst dietary groups. Amongst 31 species for which density estimation was possible, there were no correlations between local abundance and breadth of habitat use on any of the habitat axes. Breadth of habitat used did not vary with degree of endemism, but herbivores used a greater breadth of habitats on the axis describing canopy closure than did omnivores. Habitat position did not vary with endemic status, but herbivores preferred higher-biomass habitats than faunivores, and higher foraging heights than either faunivores or omnivores. Local abundance was linked weakly to habitat position with commoner species tending to forage in the lower strata of open-canopied areas. The 31 most commonly recorded species tended to occupy "middle-range" habitat positions, while 28 rarer species occupied habitats toward one or other end of the vegetation axes. These results suggest an association between the local abundance of a species and its habitat position, and especially its preference for common or mid-range habitats, rather than with its ability to utilise a wide range of habitats.  相似文献

The spire index (height/maximum diameter of shell) is a fairly adequate measure of the shape of the coiled shell of most terrestrial and freshwater gastropod shells but less so in complex marine shells with thorns, flanges and spouts. In this study, only adult free-crawling forms with several whorls, able to retract completely into the shell, are considered. In the Stylommatophora of the Western European terrestrial fauna the distribution of the spire index is markedly bimodal, the modes, with values of about 3 and about 0.5, corresponding respectively to shells with a high to very high spire (and small spire angle) and those varying from more or less globular or trochoid to very flattened and disk-like (spire angle from 60 degrees to 180 degrees). The same two modes are found in the taxonomically different terrestrial stylommatophorans of the U.S.A., and in the faunas of Puerto Rico (Caribbean) and New Caledonia (southwest Pacific). Basommatophorans also show two, rather different, modes. North American marine archaeogastropods are mainly equidimensional but with a few disk-like forms and a very few high-spired ones, marine mesogastropods are mainly high-spired but with disk-like forms, neogastropods high-spired, and relevant euthyneurans sharply bimodal, like the stylommatophorans. Fossil archaeogastropods of the Palaeozoic were much more various at first than modern forms. There is some indication that they became restricted in variety as caenogastropods became abundant, but also that the proportion of marine disk-like shells has decreased markedly since the Palaeozoic. Modes of h/d are characteristic of large taxonomic groups but not taxonomically restricted since given values may appear as specific, generic or subfamilial variants from a mode, and appear sporadically in unrelated forms. There is also no broad association between modal value and broad ecological characters. Since nearly all values do occur in some group or other, no mechanical requirement can be invoked to explain such variation. In the land Stylommatophora enough is known of the broad ecology to suggest that in extreme habitats species with very different size or shell-shape may occur together, and that generalized feeders with similar shells may show separation, ecological or geographical (but in that case, also ecological). Since different shapes of shell will have different mechanical characteristics when considered as burdens to be carried, it is suggested tentatively that they may be related to the positions in which different species normally walk and hence to their preferred feeding places. This would explain an apparent tendency for different taxonomic groups to occupy the same part of the scatter of h/d in different regions of the world, for many groups in the same region to occupy different portions of the scatter, and perhaps the apparent exclusion by caenogastropods of archaeogastropods from part of the scatter since the Palaeozoic. It is argued that the distributions discovered are explicable only by natural selection.  相似文献

The article describes an anthropometric cross-sectional study of 374 healthy schoolgirls aged 12-15 years from secondary schools of Tartu (Estonia). 29 body measurements and 9 skinfolds were measured. Mean skinfolds and 6 indices and ratios (including body mass index) were calculated. In each age group the data were systematized into 5 height-weight SD-classes according to the correspondence between body height and weight. The medium class lies between -0.5 SD and +0.5 SD of the respective age group mean (M +/- 0.5 SD); the other classes contain the respective outer values. All the subjects were assigned into one of the following five categories: three height/weight-concordant categories: I = small (small height-small weight), II = medium (medium height-medium weight), III = large (big height-big weight) and two height/weight-disconcordant categories: IV = so-called pyknomorphous, V = so-called leptomorphous. Categories IV and V thus contained three height/weight subclasses each. The body build categories differ significantly from each other within both groups (I-III and IV-V) in all age groups in all measured variables, except sternum length, abdomen length, trunk length, biacromial breadth, biiliocrystal breadth, femur breadth, ankle breadth, humerus breadth, wrist breadth, and head circumference for which no significant differences between pyknomorphous and leptomorphous categories were found. A multidimensional statistical model of body build might be used in girls going through puberty to systematize and compare morphological variables with other assessed characteristics in different applied studies, for example physiological, sociological, psychological, or nutritional.  相似文献

How do several characteristics adapt to gravity while mutually influencing each other? Our study addresses this issue by focusing on the terrestrial gastropod shell. The geometric relationship between the spire index (shell height/diameter) and outline (cylindricality) is theoretically estimated. When the shell grows isometrically, a high-spired shell becomes conical in shape and a low-spired shell becomes cylindrical in shape. A physical model shows that the lowest- and highest-spired shells are the most balanced. In addition, a cone shape is the most balanced for a low-spired shell, and a column shape is the most balanced for a high-spired shell. Spire index and cylindricality measured for freshwater gastropods follow the relationship estimated by the model, whereas those for terrestrial gastropods deviate from this relationship. This translates to a high shell being more cylindrical than a flat shell, except in the case of extremely high or low shells. This suggests that the shape of the most balanced shells (lowest and highest shell heights) is constrained by coiling geometry but that relatively unbalanced shells (intermediate shell heights) do not follow a coiling geometry, as a result of adaptation to enable the snail to carry its shell more effectively.  相似文献

Spatial distribution of the Karoo paralysis tick (Ixodes rubicundus) has been studied in a paralysis enzootic area of the southwestern Orange Free state. Significantly more females than males were collected from the vegetation. Most ticks (99%) used grass as questing sites at a height of approximately 45 cm (range 10–97 cm), which correlates with the size of host animals. No significant differences between the questing height of male and fermale ticks were evident. The ticks were found on most of the grass species present and, except for the genusEragrostis no specific preference was evident. When questing, the capitulum ofI. rubicundus is usually (90%) directed towards the ground. Seventy-eight percent of the ticks occurred singly on a specific grassblade or flowerhead. In those cases where two ticks occurred together, no sexual aggregation was evident. Most ticks occurred under or close ( =62 cm) to the corwn cover of specific shrub or tree species. These plant species were characterized by a dense crown cover with a mat of decaying leaf litter underneath. The preference of the tick for wild olive trees (Olea europaea fricana) suggests that except for the physical characteristics of this tree species, host factors may also be important. Significantly more ticks were distributed on the cooler, more protected southern sides of vegetation in comparison to the northern sides.  相似文献

Variation in human nasal height and breadth   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It has been suggested that the long-standing association of variability in the human nasal index [100 × (nasal breadth)/(nasal height)] with climatic variation is spurious evidence for natural selection in humans (Hoyme, 1965; St. Hoyme and Iscan, 1989). The argument is based principally on the observation that nasal height is globally more variable than nasal breadth, with nasal breadth thus contributing little to variation in the index. This argument does not take into account the confounding effect of absolute size of these variables on their variances. In this study we compare the intrinsic variation in skeletal nasal height and breadth within and among 26 mixed-sex populations (N = 2,408) at globally diverse localities (Howells, 1989), using 2 × 2 variance-covariance matrices of the logarithmically transformed variates. Hypothesis tests for homogeneity of matrices and equalvariance/equal-covariance indicate that the intrinsic variation in nasal breadth is greater than that for nasal height within populations, and that nasal breadth and nasal height exhibit equivalent intrinsic variation among populations. The argument that nasal breadth contributes little to the worldwide variation in the human nasal index is rejected. Given our present understanding of nasal physiological morpho-function, these results support, but do not demonstrate, an adaptive role for human nasal index variation. Promising methods for elucidating natural selection on human nasal form are suggested.  相似文献

The endemic land snail genus Mandarina of the Ogasawara Islands provides an excellent model system to investigate adaptive radiation. Previously, it has been shown that coexisting species of the islands segregate by microhabitat, so that they are either predominantly found on the ground in relatively wet and sheltered sites, dry and exposed sites, or else are arboreal. Moreover, shell morphology correlates with microhabitat, so that species in wet and sheltered sites tend to have high-spired shells with a high aperture, and those in dry and exposed sites tend to have relatively low-spired shells with a wide aperture. We have now found that on Hahajima, Mandarina polita have variable shell morphology, and there is a correlation between morphology and the depth of leaf litter, as well as the presence/absence of other terrestrial species. Specifically, when high-spired terrestrial Mandarina ponderosa is present, M. polita tend to be low-spired and have a large aperture, indicative of character displacement. When M. ponderosa is absent, the shell shape of M. polita is much more variable, the overall spire is higher, individuals are found in deeper litter, and there is a strong correlation between litter depth and spire height. We argue that these patterns are due to local adaptation, but it remains possible that they are an artefact due to the 'ghost of species past'.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 149–159.  相似文献

It is widely assumed that higher levels of intraspecific variability in one or more traits should allow species to persist under a wider range of environmental conditions. However, few studies have examined whether species that exhibit high variability are found in a wider range of environmental conditions, and whether variability increases the ability of a species to adapt to prevailing ecological gradients. We used four plant functional traits, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N) and maximum plant height in 49 species across a strong environmental gradient to answer three questions: 1) is there evidence for ‘high‐variability’ species (that is, species which show high variability in multiple traits, simultaneously)? 2) are species with more variable traits present across a wider range of environmental conditions than less variable species? And 3) whether more variable species show better trait–environment matching to the prevailing abiotic (soil moisture) gradient at the site? We found little evidence for a ‘high‐variability’ species. Variability was correlated for two leaf traits, SLA and LDMC, while variability in leaf traits and plant height were not correlated. We found little evidence that more variable species were present in more diverse conditions: only variation in SLA was correlated with a wider ecological niche breadth. For plant traits along the soil‐moisture gradient, higher variability led to better trait–environment matching in half of measured traits. Overall, we found little support for the existence of ‘high‐variability’ species, but that variability in SLA is correlated with a wider ecological breadth. We also found evidence that variation in traits can improve trait–environment matching, a relationship which may facilitate our understanding ecological breadth along prevailing gradients, and community assembly on the basis of traits.  相似文献

Anatomy of the heart of the beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The heart of the beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) is described from the dissection of seven specimens. As in most whales the heart is characterized by a transverse broadness and a flatness of the ventricles from one surface to the other and by an apex formed by both ventricles. Heart size parameters are used for comparison with parameters of other marine and land mammals. The heart width index (heart height/heart circumference) averages 31.3 in comparison to 28.7 for the Weddell seal and 39.0 for the felids. The right ventricle is relatively long and narrow with a mean length index (TS/heart height) of 64.7 and a mean breadth index (TP/heart height) of 38.7. These heart parameters are discussed in functional terms.  相似文献

Determinants of local abundance and range size in forest vascular plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Aim For a large set of forest herbs we tested: (1) whether there is a positive relationship between local abundance and geographical range size; (2) whether abundance or range size are affected by the niche breadths of species or niche availability; and (3) whether these are affected by the species life‐history traits. Location Northwestern Germany. Methods We measured abundance as mean density in 22 base‐rich deciduous forests and recorded range size as area of occupancy on four different spatial scales (local to national). Niche breadth was expressed in terms of habitat specificity (specialists, generalists) and of the ability to grow across a broad range of soil pH. The species’ pH niche position was used as a measure of the importance of habitat availability. As life‐history traits we used diaspore mass and number, plant height, seed longevity, lifespan/clonality, pollination mode, dispersal capability and flowering time. Results There were mainly no positive relationships between the abundance of species and their range size, as tested across species and across phylogenetically independent contrasts. Forest specialists were generally distributed less widely than generalists, but habitat specificity was not related to local abundance. Species with a broader pH niche breadth were more common, but the positive relationships between niche breadth and abundance or range size disappeared when accounting for sample size effects. Clonal species with few and heavy diaspores were most abundant, as well as early‐flowering species and those lacking dispersal structures. Local and regional range size were determined largely by habitat availability, while national range was positively affected by plant height and diaspore mass. Main conclusions Different processes determine the local density of species and their range size. Abundance within habitat patches appears to be related mainly to the species life histories, especially to their capacity for extensive clonal reproduction, whereas range size appears to be determined strongly by the availability of suitable habitat.  相似文献

It has been shown that conidia of Phyllosticta ampelicida require attachment to a substratum to initiate germination. Furthermore this attachment occurs only on hydrophobic surfaces. This study was initiated to ascertain the breadth of this phenomenon among other species of the genus Phyllosticta. We tested 23 isolates of Phyllosticta representing at least 14 named species. These isolates were collected from North America, Asia and Africa. For 22 of the 23 isolates tested spore attachment occurred at a rate of 60-100% on hydrophobic polystyrene but at 0-5% on hydrophilic polystyrene. The one exception to the preference for a hydrophobic substratum for attachment was an unnamed species of Phyllosticta from Rhus glauca that attached less than 10% on either surface. A similar response was observed when assaying germination and appressorium formation for 17 isolates. Germination and appressorium formation for these isolates proceeded on hydrophobic polystyrene but not on nutrient agar, which is hydrophilic. In five of the tested isolates germination was high on both hydrophobic polystyrene and hydrophilic nutrient media. The isolate from Rhus glauca did not germinate appreciably on either surface. Taken together these results suggest that the requirement for conidium contact/attachment to trigger germination is pervasive to the genus Phyllosticta.  相似文献

Conventional wisdom concerning the extinction of Paranthropus suggests that these species developed highly derived morphologies as a consequence of specializing on a diet consisting of hard and/or low-quality food items. It goes on to suggest that these species were so specialized or stenotopic that they were unable to adapt to changing environments in the period following 1.5 Ma. The same conventional wisdom proposes that early Homo species responded very differently to the same environmental challenges. Instead of narrowing their niche it was the dietary and behavioral flexibility (eurytopy) exhibited by early Homo that enabled that lineage to persist. We investigate whether evidence taken across eleven criteria supports a null hypothesis in which Paranthropus is more stenotopic than early Homo. In six instances (most categories of direct evidence of dietary breadth, species diversity, species duration, susceptibility to dispersal, dispersal direction, and non-dietary adaptations) the evidence is inconsistent with the hypothesis. Only one line of indirect evidence for dietary breadth-occlusal morphology-is unambiguously consistent with the null hypothesis that Paranthropus' ability to process tough, fibrous food items (e.g., leaves) was reduced relative to early Homo. Other criteria (habitat preference, population density, direct and indirect evidence of dietary breadth related to incisor use) are only consistent with the hypothesis under certain conditions. If those conditions are not met, then the evidence is either inconsistent with the hypothesis, or ambiguous. On balance, Paranthropus and early Homo were both likely to have been ecological generalists. These data are inconsistent with the conventional wisdom that stenotopy was a major contributing factor in the extinction of the Paranthropus clade. Researchers will need to explore other avenues of research in order to generate testable hypotheses about the demise of Paranthropus. Ecological models that may explain the evolution of eurytopy in early hominins are discussed.  相似文献

Shell size and shape in Madeiran land snails: do niches remain unfilled?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The distribution of shell heights and diameters in the mainly endemic Madeiran land snail fauna shows the bimodal pattern of high- and low-spired shells found in many other faunas. Field and laboratory studies show that shell shape is associated with the angle of substrate on which the snails crawl; as elsewhere, tall spired species use vertical surfaces or burrow in soft material. Flattened species predominate on horizontal surfaces, while globular species are less specific in their preferences. Detailed comparisons with the fauna of N.W. Europe show that the proportion of high-spired species in the Madeiran fauna is low, and large high-spired species associated with vertical surfaces are very few in number despite an apparent abundance of suitable habitats. Amongst low-spired species, one family, the Helicidae, dominates the Madeiran fauna. While the overall distribution of size in these species is much as in Europe, Madeiran helicids extend into smaller size classes than do those in Europe, and they appear to fill a gap in the scatter created by the absence of other families.
Non-endemic species, other than those strictly associated with man-made environments, are generally small in size. In the upper scatter, their size distribution parallels that of endemics, but in the lower scatter they constitute the whole of the smallest size classes.
The role of interspecific competition in determining these distributions is discussed. The range of helicid sizes is compatible with a relaxation of competition or predator pressure relative to other areas, but in the upper scatter there appear to be gaps in the range of size and shape expected despite a long period in which the fauna could evolve. This could indicate the existence of adaptive troughs blocking, or delaying, radiation over the full spectrum of size and shape.  相似文献

Seven measurements were taken on a sample of 50 human cadaveric pelves, all white Texans born in the 20th century. Two separate methodologies were used to obtain these data: radiographs and direct measurements. These two methodologies were compared and contrasted, with the relative advantages and disadvantages of each explored. Results indicate that significant differences exist between the two methodologies. Pelvic height, breadth of symphysis, sacro-iliac breadth (P = 0.0001) and anterior upper spinal breadth (P = 0.0002) were larger when measured directly. Pelvic breadth, transverse diameter of the pelvic brim, and height of the ilium did not significantly differ between methodologies (P = 0.2037, P = 0.5253, P = 0.1752). Due to secular changes and inherent intrapopulational variation, taking measurements either directly from modern cadaveric specimens or radiographically on living volunteers in a limited geographic or socioeconomic grouping, rather than from skeletal collections or archived radiographs, may be more appropriate for providing data for current anthropometric applications. Cultural reshaping (artificial deformation or modification) of the neurocranial vault provides an artificially increased range of morphological variability within which the relationship between the growing neurocranium and face can be investigated. We analyze crania which have been fronto-occipitally compressed to ascertain possible morphological effects on the mandible. We collected measures of mandibular breadth, length, and height from 82 modified (N = 48) and unmodified (N = 34) crania from a Peruvian Ancon series. Angle classification was also scored in order to investigate whether or not occlusal relationships were affected by neurocranial reshaping. Only intercondylar distance (posterior mandibular breadth) exhibited significant differences between unmodified and modified groups, though this difference was relatively small compared with vault deformation. The modified crania had a higher frequency of normal occlusion (Class I) than the unmodified crania. Increased intercondylar breadth in modified skulls is due to a cascade of effects which begin with a direct effect of the fronto-occipital deforming device on neurocranial shape (increased neurocranial width). The increase in mandibular breadth may be a compensatory response to increased cranial base breadth and maintains articulation between the cranial base and mandible. The increased posterior breadth, coupled with a slight decrease in mandibular depth, may contribute to the change in occlusal relationships suggested for this sample.  相似文献

Large carnivore community structure is affected by direct and indirect interactions between intra-guild members. Co-existence between different species within a carnivore guild may occur through diet, habitat or temporal partitioning. Since carnivore species are highly dependent on availability and accessibility of prey, diet partitioning is potentially one of the most important mechanisms in allowing carnivores to co-exist. Intra-guild interactions may vary over time as carnivore prey preference and diet overlap can change due to seasonal changes in resource availability. We conducted scat analysis to compare the seasonal changes in prey preference, diet partitioning and niche breadth of four large carnivore species, namely leopard Panthera pardus, spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta, brown hyena Parahyaena brunnea and wild dog Lycaon pictus in central Tuli, Botswana. Large carnivores in central Tuli display a high dietary overlap, with spotted hyena and brown hyena displaying almost complete dietary overlap and the other carnivore species displaying slightly lower but still significant dietary overlap. Dietary niche breadth for both hyena species was high possibly due to their flexible foraging strategies, including scavenging, while leopard and wild dog showed a relatively low niche breadth, suggesting a more specialised diet. High dietary overlap in central Tuli is possibly explained by the high abundance of prey species in the area thereby reducing competition pressure between carnivore species. Our research highlights the need to assess the influence of diet partitioning in structuring large carnivore communities across multiple study sites, by demonstrating that in prey rich environments, the need for diet partitioning by carnivores to avoid competition may be limited.  相似文献

Discriminant analysis (DA) models were developed and applied to examine the use of prey-stage preference (Tetranychus urticae Koch egg versus larval prey) in the classification of phytoseiid mites into life-style types. Prey-stage preferences and developmental times when preying on T. urticae, and relative ovipositional rates on six food categories were determined for four phytoseiid species occurring on apple in central and eastern Oregon, USA: Galendromus flumenis (Chant), Galendromus occidentalis (Nesbitt), Metaseiulus citri (Garman and McGregor) and Typhlodromus caudiglans Schuster. In terms of all three aspects studied, the phytoseiid species showed a consistent polarization of G. occidentalis < or = G. flumenis < or = T. caudiglans < M. citri. Specifically, G. occidentalis ('The Dalles' strain) had a significant preference for eggs, G. flumenis had no preference, and T. caudiglans and M. citri had significant preferences for larvae; G. occidentalis had the shortest developmental time, followed by G. flumenis and T. caudiglans, while M. citri had the longest developmental time; and diet breadth was most narrow for G. occidentalis and progressively broader from G. flumenis, T. caudiglans through M. citri, which was able to sustain oviposition on the broadest range of prey and pollens. Species were classified somewhat differently depending on which traits were considered in a given DA. Prey-stage preference was not included as an indicator in the parsimonious DA model when all species and all traits were considered, but in general this trait performed well as an indicator alone (single-trait DA) and somewhat improved the classifications of multitrait discriminant analyses.  相似文献

The relationship between preference and performance was studied under laboratory conditions for larvae and adult females of Leptinotarsa undecimlineata (Stål) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Leptinotarsa undecimlineata feeds exclusively on Solanum lanceolatum L. (Solanaceae) in the centre of Veracruz, Mexico. A common sympatric species, Solanum myriacanthum Dunal, is not used as host. We conducted a series of laboratory experiments to detect reasons for the exclusive use of one host plant. Leptinotarsa undecimlineata larvae were reared under laboratory conditions on both plant species, Solanum lanceolatum and S. myriacanthum . Length of larval stages, pupal weight, and percent adult eclosion were compared, and larval preference for both Solanum species was tested. Upon eclosion, adult females were exposed to each of the plants, and the effect of larval diet on adult preference was determined. Oviposition on both Solanum species was observed in no-choice tests. Larvae showed no significant preferences for either plant species. Pupal weight, however, was significantly higher on S. lanceolatum . Female beetles significantly preferred S. lanceolatum leaves, and no effect of preimaginal conditioning was found. Females reproduced in lower numbers after feeding on S. myriacanthum , oviposition initiated later, and females laid fewer eggs than females fed with S. lanceolatum . No female accepted S. myriacanthum for oviposition. Results obtained suggest that the potential host breadth of L. undecimlineata is broader in larvae than in female beetles.  相似文献

Distribution of phyllosphere fungi within the canopy of giant dogwood   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Distribution of phyllosphere fungi within the canopy of giant dogwood (Swida controversa) was examined. Canopies of two dogwood trees (about 8m height) were divided into five parts in relation to the order of shoots within the current-year shoot, the height of leaf layers, and the distance from the main trunk, and leaves were collected from the five positions. A total of 13 and 33 species were isolated from the interior and surface of leaves by surface sterilization and washing methods, respectively. Species composition of fungi was different markedly between interior and surface of an individual leaf, whereas it was similar among five canopy positions in the interior or on the surface. Of 13 frequent species regarded as phyllosphere fungi, 6 species showed no difference in frequencies among five positions within the canopy. The other 7 species showed significant preference within the current-year shoot, between the leaf layer, and/or at the distance from the trunk. The probable effect of leaf properties was detected on 2 of the 7 species, while the frequencies of the other 5 species were not related to the leaf properties but were affected by the order of shoots (leaf age), the height of leaf layer, and/or the distance from the trunk (sunlight intensity).  相似文献
