We sequenced the entire control region and portions of flanking genes
(tRNA(Phe), tRNA(Glu), and ND6) in the common chaffinch (Fringilla
coelebs), blue chaffinch (F. teydea), brambling (F. montifringilla), and
greenfinch (Carduelis chloris). In these finches the control region is
similar in length (1,223-1,237 bp) and has the same flanking gene order as
in other birds, and contains a putative TAS element and the highly
conserved CSB-1 and F, D, and C boxes recognizable in most vertebrates.
Cloverleaf-like structures associated with the TAS element at the 5' end
and CSB-1 at the 3' end of the control region may be involved with the stop
and start of D-loop synthesis, respectively. The pattern of nucleotide and
substitution bias is similar to that in other vertebrates, and consequently
the finch control region can be subdivided into a central, conserved G-rich
domain (domain II) flanked by hypervariable 5'-C-rich (domain I) and
3'-AT-rich (domain III) segments. In pairwise comparisons among finch
species, the central domain has unusually low transition/transversion
ratios, which suggests that increased G + T content is a functional
constraint, possibly for DNA primase efficiency. In finches the relative
rates of evolution vary among domains according to a ratio of 4.2 (domain
III) to 2.2 (domain I) to 1 (domain II), and extensively among sites within
domains I and II. Domain I and III sequences are extremely useful in
recovering intraspecific phylogeographic splits between populations in
Africa and Europe, Madeira, and a basal lineage in Nefza, Tunisia. Domain
II sequences are highly conserved, and are therefore only useful in
conjunction with sequences from domains I and III in phylogenetic studies
of closely related species.

Levels of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in 12 bilateral skeletal traits were estimated from 12 populations of greenfinches (Carduelis chloris) collected along a north‐south gradient across Europe. Average FA of measured traits was positively correlated with latitude indicating that the younger and genetically less diverse northern European populations are developmentally less stable than the older and genetically more diverse southern populations. Levels of FA differed significantly between different traits being lowest for functionally important traits (limb and wing bones) and highest for functionally less important traits such as foramina (apertures through bones)– a pattern that was highly concordant across different populations. Males tended to exhibit higher levels of FA than females, a finding consistent with the suggestions that males are more prone to developmental perturbations than females. Age differences in levels of FA were relatively clear, but inconsistent across traits with different degree of functionality. Individual heterozygosity – as enumerated from variation in allozyme loci – was unrelated to individual FA. No evidence for existence of individual asymmetry parameter (IAP) was found although traits related to locomotion indicated some degree of integration, which was expressed by correlations in the signed asymmetry. Nevertheless, an individual's overall asymmetry was poorly predicted by asymmetry of individual characters. Evidence for existence of population asymmetry parameter (PAP) was clear since all traits exhibited a similar degree of association with latitude. That the latitudinal cline of increasing FA towards north coincided with decreasing levels of genetic variability across the cline could be indicative of break down of developmental stability in the recently established and genetically impoverished populations. To what extent a reduced heterozygosity, the break up of co‐adapted gene complexes and/or environmental differences contributed to this process cannot be distinguished from our data. 相似文献

After sections of left or right tracheosyringeal nerve (NXIIts), greenfinches may repeat everyday calls, with no effect on temporal properties. It is suggested that either side of syrinx may produce sound alone and ipsilateral innerration of NXIIts for the syringeal muscles. After section of left NXIIts, the bird produces the vocal pattern of partial tone increase, and effects on the sound intensity and sentence length average 1.4 and 2.8 times those after section of right NXIIts, suggesting that the innervation of NXIIts has left side dominance. After bilateral section of NXIIts, the call rhythm in company with expiratory motions is 98–146 times/min, on an average, and lose all sentence types and syllable structure of normal call. But the call spectra produced by tympaniform membrane vibrations without innervation still reserve frequency components similar to the tonic frequency and harmonics of normal calls. 相似文献

Slow mitochondrial DNA sequence evolution in the Anthozoa (Cnidaria) 总被引:33,自引:0,他引:33
Mitochondrial genes have been used extensively in population genetic and phylogeographical analyses, in part due to a high rate of nucleotide substitution in animal mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Nucleotide sequences of anthozoan mitochondrial genes, however, are virtually invariant among conspecifics, even at third codon positions of protein-coding sequences. Hence, mtDNA markers are of limited use for population-level studies in these organisms. Mitochondrial gene sequence divergence among anthozoan species is also low relative to that exhibited in other animals, although higher level relationships can be resolved with these markers. Substitution rates in anthozoan nuclear genes are much higher than in mitochondrial genes, whereas nuclear genes in other metazoans usually evolve more slowly than, or similar to, mitochondrial genes. Although several mechanisms accounting for a slow rate of sequence evolution have been proposed, there is not yet a definitive explanation for this observation. Slow evolution and unique characteristics may be common in primitive metazoans, suggesting that patterns of mtDNA evolution in these organisms differ from that in other animal systems. 相似文献

With an indirect immunofluorescence technique and an antiserum raised against synthetic LHRH, immunofluorescent granules were observed in fine radially oriented fibres in the palisade layer of the zoma externa in both the anterior and the posterior divisions of the median eminence in the greenfinch. There was no specific immunofluorescence in the tractus supraoptico-hypophyseus. It is concluded that the greenfinch median eminence contains material which is similar to mammalian LHRH. 相似文献

Quantitative trait and allozyme divergence in the Greenfinch (Carduelis chloris, Aves: Fringillidae)
Juha Merila 《Biological journal of the Linnean Society. Linnean Society of London》1997,61(2):243-266
Quantitative trait divergence and variability among 12 greenfinch populations across continental Europe was examined and compared to divergence in neutral genetic markers (allozymes). The added among locality variance component for 16 skeletal traits was large (mean 28%, range 4–48%) equalling a divergence of up to three SD units. The divergence in quantitative traits (Qst = 0.04-0.48) greatly exceeded that in alloymes (FST = 0.01-0.07), indicating the differentiation in quantitative traits to be larger than expected by mutation and drift alone. This conclusion was consistent also with results from the multivariate approach of Rogers & Harpending. However, genetic and morphometric distances between populations were positively correlated, even when controlling for the geographic distance separating pairs of populations. In concordance with Bergmann's rule, most traits were strongly and positively correlated with latitude, indicating latitudinally ordered genetic or/and environmental effects. However, the correlation between lower mandible width and latitude was strongly negative, demonstrating an inverse relationship between beak size and body size across the populations. These results are interpreted to reflect the re-colonization of history of northern Europe (genetic and geographic distances correlated) which has been paralleled by selection acting on quantitative traits (QST >FST )- In particular, the counter-gradient variation in beak width, a functionally important trait, is suggestive of an adaptive basis for quantitative trait divergence. 相似文献

Differential rates of nucleotide substitution among different gene segments
and between distinct evolutionary lineages is well documented among
mitochondrial genes and is likely a consequence of locus-specific selective
constraints that delimit mutational divergence over evolutionary time. We
compared sequence variation of 18 homologous loci (15 coding genes and 3
parts of the control region) among 10 mammalian mitochondrial DNA genomes
which allowed us to describe different mitochondrial evolutionary patterns
and to produce an estimation of the relative order of gene divergence. The
relative rates of divergence of mitochondrial DNA genes in the family
Felidae were estimated by comparing their divergence from homologous
counterpart genes included in nuclear mitochondrial DNA (Numt, pronounced
"new might"), a genomic fossil that represents an ancient transfer of 7.9
kb of mitochondrial DNA to the nuclear genome of an ancestral species of
the domestic cat (Felis catus). Phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial
(mtDNA) sequences with multiple outgroup species were conducted to date the
ancestral node common to the Numt and the cytoplasmic (Cymt) mtDNA genes
and to calibrate the rate of sequence divergence of mitochondrial genes
relative to nuclear homologous counterparts. By setting the fastest
substitution rate as strictly mutational, an empirical "selective
retardation index" is computed to quantify the sum of all constraints,
selective and otherwise, that limit sequence divergence of mitochondrial
gene sequences over time.

Pilot whales (Globicephala spp.) provide an interesting example of recently diverged oceanic species with a complex evolutionary history. The two species have wide but largely non‐overlapping ranges. Globicephala melas (long‐finned pilot whale; LFPW) has an antitropical distribution and is found in the cold‐temperate waters of the North Atlantic and Southern Hemisphere, whereas Globicephala macrorhynchus (short‐finned pilot whale; SFPW) has a circumglobal distribution and is found mainly in the tropics and subtropics. To investigate pilot whale evolution and biogeography, we analysed worldwide population structure using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences (up to 620 bp) from a variety of sources (LFPW = 643; SFPW = 150), including strandings in New Zealand and Tasmania, and whale‐meat products purchased on the markets of Japan and Korea. Phylogenetic reconstructions failed to support a reciprocal monophyly of the two species, despite six diagnostic substitutions, possibly because of incomplete lineage sorting or inadequate phylogenetic information. Both species had low haplotype and nucleotide diversity compared to other abundant widespread cetaceans (LFPW, π = 0.35%; SFPW, π = 0.87%) but showed strong mtDNA differentiation between oceanic basins. Strong levels of structuring were also found at the regional level. In LFPW, phylogeographic patterns were suggestive either of a recent demographic expansion or selective sweep acting on the mtDNA. For SFPW, the waters around Japan appear to represent a centre of diversity, with two genetically‐distinct forms, as well as a third population of unknown origin. The presence of multiple unique haplotypes among SFPW from South Japan, together with previously documented morphological and ecological differences, suggests that the southern form represents a distinct subspecies and/or evolutionary significant unit. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 98 , 729–744. 相似文献

Summary Sequence comparisons were made for up to 667 bp of DNA cloned from 14 kinds of HawaiianDrosophila and five other dipteran species. These sequences include parts of the genes for NADH dehydrogenase (subunits 1, 2, and 5) and rRNA (from the large ribosomal subunit). Because the times of divergence among these species are known approximately, the sequence comparisons give insight into the evolutionary dynamics of this molecule. Transitions account for nearly all of the differences between sequences that have diverged by less than 2%; for these sequences the mean rate of divergence appears to be about 2%/Myr. In comparisons involving greater divergence times and greater sequence divergence, relatively more of the sequence differences are due to transversions. Specifically, the fraction of these differences that are counted as transversions rises from an initial value of less than 0.1 to a plateau value of nearly 0.6. The time required to reach half of the plateau value, about 10 Myr, is similar to that for mammalian mtDNA. The mtDNAs of flies and mammals are also alike in the shape of the curve relating the percentage of positions at which there are differences in protein-coding regions to the time of divergence. For both groups of animals, the curve has a steep initial slope ascribable to fast accumulation of synonymous substitutions and a shallow final slope resulting from the slow accumulation of substitutions causing amino acid replacements. However, the percentage of all sites that can experience a high rate of substitution appears to be only about 8% for fly mtDNA compared to about 20% for mammalian mtDNA. The low percentage of hypervariable sites may be a consequence of a functional constraint associated with the low content of guanine and cytosine in fly mtDNA. 相似文献

The dynamics of the substitution process for mammalian mitochondrial DNA
have been modeled. The temporal behavior of several quantities has been
studied and the model's predictions have been compared with estimates
obtained from recent mtDNA sequence data for an increasingly divergent
series of primates, the mouse and the cow (Anderson et al. 1981, 1982; Bibb
et al. 1981; Brown et al. 1982). The results are consistent with the
hypothesis that the decrease in the proportion of transitions observed as
divergence increases is a consequence of the highly biased substitution
process. In addition, the results support the hypothesis that, although a
portion of the mtDNA molecule evolves at an extremely rapid rate, a
significant portion of the molecule is under strong selective constraints.

Mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence data from 15 species of herons (Aves: Ardeidae), representing 13 genera, were compared with DNA hybridization data of single-copy nuclear DNA (scnDNA) from the same species in a taxonomic congruence assessment of heron phylogeny. The two data sets produced a partially resolved, completely congruent estimate of phylogeny with the following basic structure: (Tigrisoma, Cochlearius, (((Zebrilus, (Ixobrychus, Botaurus)), (((Ardea, Casmerodius), Bubulcus), ((Egretta thula, Egretta caerulea, Egretta tricolor), Syrigma), Butorides, Nycticorax, Nyctanassa)))). Because congruence indicated similar phylogenetic information in the two data sets, we used the relatively unsaturated DNA hybridization distances as surrogates of time to examine graphically the patterns and rates of change in cytochrome b distances. Cytochrome b distances were computed either from whole sequences or from partitioned sequences consisting of transitions, transversions, specific codon site positions, or specific protein-coding regions. These graphical comparisons indicated that unpartitioned cytochrome b has evolved at 5-10 times the rate of scnDNA. Third-position transversions appeared to offer the most useful sequence partition for phylogenetic analysis because of their relatively fast rate of substitution (two times that of scnDNA) and negligible saturation. We also examined lineage-based rates of evolution by comparing branch length patterns between the nuclear and cytochrome b trees. The degree of correlation in corresponding branch lengths between cytochrome b and DNA hybridization trees depended on DNA sequence partitioning. When cytochrome b sequences were not partitioned, branch lengths in the cytochrome b and DNA hybridization trees were not correlated. However, when cytochrome b sequences were reduced to third-position transversions (i.e., unsaturated, relatively fast changing data), branch lengths were correlated. This finding suggests that lineage-based rates of DNA evolution in nuclear and mitochondrial genomes are influenced by common causes. 相似文献

The immunocompetence-handicap hypothesis suggests that the honesty of quality signals could be guaranteed if testosterone (T) suppresses immune function while enhancing male ornaments. In addition, it has been proposed that the cost of enhancing ornaments should be highest for males with small ornaments. Recently, the assertion that T causes obligate immunosuppression has been questioned. In this study, we tested whether elevated T levels would increase susceptibility to a viral infection, and whether this hypothesized effect would be most pronounced in males with small ornaments. We surgically inserted T implants into 15 male greenfinches (Carduelis chloris) and control implants into a further 15 males. All birds were then infected with a naturally occurring virus (Sindbis virus, Alphavirus genus), and each bird's daily viraemia (blood virus concentration) was measured for seven days. The specific antibody response was measured for eight weeks. T-implanted males did not exhibit increased viraemia or decreased antibody response, and males with small and large ornaments did not respond differently to T implantation. We did, however, find that T implantation decreased viraemia early in the course of the infection and increased viraemia late in the infection. Thus, our results demonstrate that T may act both to increase and to decrease viraemia. 相似文献

Evolutionary and biogeographic patterns of the Badidae (Teleostei: Perciformes) inferred from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We reconstructed phylogenetic relationships of the family Badidae using both mitochondrial and nuclear nucleotide sequence data to address badid systematics and to evaluate the role of vicariant speciation on their evolution and current distribution. Phy-logenetic hypotheses were derived from complete cytochrome b (1,140 base pairs) sequences of 33 individuals representing 13 badid species, and using three species of Nandidae as outgroups. Additionally, we sequenced the nuclear RAG1 (1,473 base pairs) and Tmo-4C4 (511 base pairs) genes from each of the badid species and one representative of the outgroup. Our molecular data provide the first phylogenetic hypothesis of badid intrarelationships. Analysis of the mitochondrial and nuclear nucleotide sequence data sets resulted in well-supported trees, indicating a basal split between the genera Dario and Badis, and further supporting the division of the genus Badis into five species groups as suggested by a previous taxonomic revision of the Badidae. Within the genus Badis, mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenies differed in the relative position of B. kyar. We also used our molecular phylogeny to test a vicariant speciation hypothesis derived from geological evidence of large-scale changes in drainage patterns in the Miocene affecting the Irrawaddy- and Tsangpo-Brahmaputra drainages, in the southeastern Himalaya. Within both genera, Badis and Dario, we observed a divergence into Irrawaddy- and Tsangpo-Brahmaputra clades. Using a cytb substitution rate of 8.2 x 10(-9) (substitutions x base pair(-1) x year(-1), we tentatively date this vicariant event at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary (19-24Myr). It is concordant with a hypothesized paleo connection of the Tsangpo river with the Irrawaddy drainage that was most likely interrupted during Miocene orogenic events through tectonic uplifts in eastern Tibet. Our data, therefore, indicate a substantial role of vicariant-based speciation shaping the current distribution patterns of badids. 相似文献

Shrews of the genus Sorex are characterized by a Holarctic distribution, and relationships among extant taxa have never been fully resolved. Phylogenies have been proposed based on morphological, karyological, and biochemical comparisons, but these analyses often produced controversial and contradictory results. Phylogenetic analyses of partial mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences (1011 bp) were used to examine the relationships among 27 Sorex species. The molecular data suggest that Sorex comprises two major monophyletic lineages, one restricted mostly to the New World and one with a primarily Palearctic distribution. Furthermore, several sister-species relationships are revealed by the analysis. Based on the split between the Soricinae and Crocidurinae subfamilies, we used a 95% confidence interval for both the calibration of a molecular clock and the subsequent calculation of major diversification events within the genus Sorex. Our analysis does not support an unambiguous acceleration of the molecular clock in shrews, the estimated rate being similar to other estimates of mammalian mitochondrial clocks. In addition, the data presented here indicate that estimates from the fossil record greatly underestimate divergence dates among Sorex taxa. 相似文献

Species traits have been hypothesized by one of us (Ponge, 2013) to evolve in a correlated manner as species colonize stable, undisturbed habitats, shifting from “ancestral” to “derived” strategies. We predicted that generalism, r‐selection, sexual monomorphism, and migration/gregariousness are the ancestral states (collectively called strategy A) and evolved correlatively toward specialism, K‐selection, sexual dimorphism, and residence/territoriality as habitat stabilized (collectively called B strategy). We analyzed the correlated evolution of four syndromes, summarizing the covariation between 53 traits, respectively, involved in ecological specialization, r‐K gradient, sexual selection, and dispersal/social behaviors in 81 species representative of Fringillidae, a bird family with available natural history information and that shows variability for all these traits. The ancestrality of strategy A was supported for three of the four syndromes, the ancestrality of generalism having a weaker support, except for the core group Carduelinae (69 species). It appeared that two different B‐strategies evolved from the ancestral state A, both associated with highly predictable environments: one in poorly seasonal environments, called B1, with species living permanently in lowland tropics, with “slow pace of life” and weak sexual dimorphism, and one in highly seasonal environments, called B2, with species breeding out‐of‐the‐tropics, migratory, with a “fast pace of life” and high sexual dimorphism. 相似文献
