The integration of the social sciences into long-term ecological research is an urgent priority. To address this need, a group of social, earth, and life scientists associated with the National Science Foundations (NSF) Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network have articulated a conceptual framework for understanding the human dimensions of ecological change for the LTER Network. This framework explicitly advocates that what is often divided into natural and human systems be considered a single, complex social-ecological system (SES). In this paper, we propose a list of core social science research areas, concepts, and questions; identify the need for multiscale investigatory frameworks crucial for implementing integrated research; and suggest practical approaches for integration. In sum, this paper is a general outline for empirical and cross-site research projects where investigators agree that bringing together social, biological, and earth scientists can lead to synthetic approaches and a unified understanding of the mechanisms regulating SES. Although the motivation for this goal is specific to the LTER Network and similar projects, we believe that the issues and ideas presented here are widely applicable to other interdisciplinary SES studies. 相似文献

Objective
To identify which physician and patient characteristics are associated with physicians'' estimation of their patient social status.Design
Cross-sectional multicentric survey.Setting
Fourty-seven primary care private offices in Western Switzerland.Participants
Random sample of 2030 patients ≥16, who encountered a general practitioner (GP) between September 2010 and February 2011.Main measures
Primary outcome: patient social status perceived by GPs, using the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status, ranging from the bottom (0) to the top (10) of the social scale.Secondary outcome: Difference between GP''s evaluation and patient''s own evaluation of their social status. Potential patient correlates: material and social deprivation using the DiPCare-Q, health status using the EQ-5D, sources of income, and level of education. GP characteristics: opinion regarding patients'' deprivation and its influence on health and care.Results
To evaluate patient social status, GPs considered the material, social, and health aspects of deprivation, along with education level, and amount and type of income. GPs declaring a frequent reflexive consideration of their own prejudice towards deprived patients, gave a higher estimation of patients'' social status (+1.0, p = 0.002). Choosing a less costly treatment for deprived patients was associated with a lower estimation (−0.7, p = 0.002). GP''s evaluation of patient social status was 0.5 point higher than the patient''s own estimate (p<0.0001).Conclusions
GPs can perceive the various dimensions of patient social status, although heterogeneously, according partly to their own characteristics. Compared to patients'' own evaluation, GPs overestimate patient social status. 相似文献5.
Classification based on social dimensions is commonly used to handle the multi-label classification task in heterogeneous networks. However, traditional methods, which mostly rely on the community detection algorithms to extract the latent social dimensions, produce unsatisfactory performance when community detection algorithms fail. In this paper, we propose a novel behavior based social dimensions extraction method to improve the classification performance in multi-label heterogeneous networks. In our method, nodes’ behavior features, instead of community memberships, are used to extract social dimensions. By introducing Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to model the network generation process, nodes’ connection behaviors with different communities can be extracted accurately, which are applied as latent social dimensions for classification. Experiments on various public datasets reveal that the proposed method can obtain satisfactory classification results in comparison to other state-of-the-art methods on smaller social dimensions. 相似文献

Organizational growth processes have consistently been shown to exhibit a fatter-than-Gaussian growth-rate distribution in a variety of settings. Long periods of relatively small changes are interrupted by sudden changes in all size scales. This kind of extreme events can have important consequences for the development of biological and socio-economic systems. Existing models do not derive this aggregated pattern from agent actions at the micro level. We develop an agent-based simulation model on a social network. We take our departure in a model by a Schwarzkopf et al. on a scale-free network. We reproduce the fat-tailed pattern out of internal dynamics alone, and also find that it is robust with respect to network topology. Thus, the social network and the local interactions are a prerequisite for generating the pattern, but not the network topology itself. We further extend the model with a parameter that weights the relative fraction of an individual''s neighbours belonging to a given organization, representing a contextual aspect of social influence. In the lower limit of this parameter, the fraction is irrelevant and choice of organization is random. In the upper limit of the parameter, the largest fraction quickly dominates, leading to a winner-takes-all situation. We recover the real pattern as an intermediate case between these two extremes. 相似文献

The best technology does no good unless people use it. Thus, the future of biofuels depends not only on development of effective and efficient technologies but also on the social, economic, and political climate within which people decide to use or avoid these new fuel sources and technologies. On a social psychological level, individual behaviors are often guided by people’s attitudes toward the behavior or objects involved and by the norms established by others within the social setting. Therefore, understanding technology adoption requires an understanding of how public attitudes and beliefs are formed or changed, as well as the implications of these changes for social norms. We provide an overview of basic social psychology research connecting attitudes and norms to individual behavior, and we describe implications of these social factors for biofuel development and use. 相似文献

Beginning in the late sixteenth century, a series of Spanish missions was built in coastal Georgia and northern Florida. These missions were designed to convert and “civilize” the indigenous peoples of the region and establish a Spanish presence in the southeastern United States. The colony was not a success, and the missions were destroyed by the English by 1706. The native population fared poorly and suffered massive loss of people due to epidemics and colonial period hardships. In this paper, I discuss microevolutionary analyses of archeological skeletal samples representing the native populations from the region. Analyses document changing patterns of variation and intergroup biological integration through time. Formal evolutionary interpretations are offered, but these are reinterpreted with respect to the social and historical context of the time period. Specifically, patterns of variation suggest a nascent Catholic Indian identity was emergent in Spanish Florida when the missions were destroyed. While this may indicate an evolutionary and historical “dead end” for the indigenous peoples of Florida, further interpretation of the data with respect to the later history of the early Seminole people suggests a continuous biological history can be inferred, linking Spanish period (seventeenth century) and Seminole period (eighteenth century) peoples of Florida within a unified historical narrative. This complex, ephemeral history has repercussions for interpreting evolutionary genetic data within a strict cladistic framework. In addition, this research contributes a humanistic component to the evolutionary sciences with respect to cultural patrimony and oral traditions, in this case, of the Seminole peoples. 相似文献

This essay attempts to provide an analytical apparatus which may be used for finding an authoritative formulation1 of the Precautionary Principle. Several formulations of the Precautionary Principle are examined. Four dimensions of the principle are identified: (1) the threat dimension, (2) the uncertainty dimension, (3) the action dimension, and (4) the command dimension. It is argued that the Precautionary Principle can be recast into the following if-clause, containing these four dimensions: “If there is (1) a threat, which is (2) uncertain, then (3) some kind of action (4) is mandatory.” The phrases expressing these dimensions may vary in (a) precision and (b) strength. It is shown that it is the dimension containing the weakest phrase that determines the strength of the entire principle. It is suggested that the four-dimensional if-clause be used as an analytical apparatus in negotiations of the Precautionary Principle. 相似文献

Understanding typical and atypical development remains one of the fundamental questions in developmental human neuroscience. Traditionally, experimental paradigms and analysis tools have been limited to constrained laboratory tasks and contexts due to technical limitations imposed by the available set of measuring and analysis techniques and the age of the subjects. These limitations severely limit the study of developmental neural dynamics and associated neural networks engaged in cognition, perception and action in infants performing “in action and in context”. This protocol presents a novel approach to study infants and young children as they freely organize their own behavior, and its consequences in a complex, partly unpredictable and highly dynamic environment. The proposed methodology integrates synchronized high-density active scalp electroencephalography (EEG), inertial measurement units (IMUs), video recording and behavioral analysis to capture brain activity and movement non-invasively in freely-behaving infants. This setup allows for the study of neural network dynamics in the developing brain, in action and context, as these networks are recruited during goal-oriented, exploration and social interaction tasks. 相似文献

Human apohemoglobin was labeled at Val-beta 1 with pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate. Correlation times were evaluated from steady-state fluorescence anisotropy and lifetime measurements upon quenching with KI. Multiple correlation times were present in the system with a major component of 23.3 ns and a minor component of less than 0.1 ns. The initial depolarization produced by these fast motions occurred in a cone with a semiangle near 33 degrees. The sedimentation velocity and circular dichroism spectra of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate labeled apohemoglobin were very similar to those of unlabeled apohemoglobin. Addition of 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate did not modify these parameters. Energy transfer of fluorescence was measured between the label, pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate, positioned at Val-beta 1, as donor, and 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate, bound inside the heme pocket, as acceptor. A quantum yield of 0.21 was measured for labeled apohemoglobin with a standard of pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate. Quenching of the lifetime and of the emission of the donor in the presence of acceptor was measured at 390 nm upon excitation at 313 nm. From these parameters, and on assumption of a random orientation of the fluorophores, an average distance of about 25 A was estimated between the two probes. Numerical correction for 85% saturation of the donor with acceptor produced distances near 23 A for the quenching of emission intensity and near 19 A for the quenching of lifetimes. In the tridimensional model of deoxyhemoglobin, the distance between Val-beta 1 and the nearest iron is about 22 A. Transfer to acceptors positioned in the alpha subunits was negligible. Taking into account the dimensions of the probes, it appears that removal of heme and the consequent loss of helical structure of the system did not produce an expansion of the beta subunits. 相似文献

This study demonstrates the importance of scale in understanding the common property institutions of indigenous groups in the Amazon. Using the example of the Pueblo Kichwa de Rukullakta, an ethnic Kichwa group in the Ecuadorian Amazon, we analyze land tenure arrangements at the household, community, and territory levels using a common property framework. The specific bundle of rights identified by the framework is held at the household level but households rely on community and territory level arrangements for their enforcement. Land claims at the community and territory level also serve to define the pool of legitimate rights holders at the next lower level. Due to the importance of scale in understanding indigenous land tenure generally, we suggest an adaptation of the common property framework to explicitly recognize the role of scale. This adapted framework identifies the function, characteristics, and means of enforcement for land claims at each scale of analysis. 相似文献

Abstract Constant-temperature and constant-volume molecular dynamics computer simulation results are reported for the structure of the liquid-vapor interface of two-dimensional fluids. Particles interact via a Lennard-Jones pair potential in the absence of external fields. The effects of temperature and system size on the density profile and the interfacial thickness are investigated, and the exponent describing the divergence of the interfacial thickness at the critical point is determined. The results are used to test the predictions of phenomenological theories and support the view that, in a system of small interfacial area, long-wavelength capillary waves are suppressed and the interfacial thickness is of the form predicted by the nonclassical van der Waals theory. 相似文献

Geometrical dimensions of the lumbar segments were determined from a series of lateral radiographs. A two-dimensional model of the lumbar vertebra in the sagittal plane is used. The model is based on five landmarks, which enable the determination of twelve geometrical parameters. The sample includes 157 healthy young males, 20-38 years old. Two-dimensional analysis of vertebral body height, depth and intervertebral spacing was performed. In all subjects disc height increases from L1 to L5, while anterior height is always bigger than posterior height, which emphasizes the lordotic shape of the lumbar region. Anthropometrical values are presented and geometrical relations between the lumbar segments are discussed. 相似文献
