Species representation and seasonality of adult sawflies (Symphyta) were studied using Malaise traps at three submontane study sites (Hriňová — HR, Mošovce — MO and Štefanová — ŠT) in the Western Carpathians (Central Slovakia). One trap was operated at each study site continuously during the growing season, in MO in 1992, in HR in 1995 and in ŠT in 1996. A total of 9,281 adults representing 244 species in 9 families were collected. Very rich sawfly assemblages were found. The highest species richness was in MO (181 species), followed by ŠT (153 species) and HR (118 species). Pseudodineura fuscula was recorded from Slovakia for the first time. Adults were present in traps from the end of April through the first half of October. Most species occurred from the second half of May through the first half of June and finished flight activity by the end of June. Seasonal flight activities of the 16 most abundant species are analysed and discussed.  相似文献

1. Growth and emergence of the acidification tolerant stonefly Leuctra nigra were studied in four coniferous forest streams with contrasting pH. Invertebrate samples were taken bimonthly during May 1997 to April 1998. Emerging L. nigra were captured in two of the streams during April to July 1998 using pyramidal emergence traps. In addition, a laboratory experiment was conducted to evaluate growth of L. nigra in response to variations in food quality (neutral or acid conditioned leaves) and water pH. 2. The invertebrate community in low pH streams had lower diversity and density compared with neutral streams. Abundance of L. nigra was also lower, despite the dominance of this stonefly in the invertebrate community in the acidic streams. 3. Secondary production of L. nigra was 2.04 and 3.07 g DW m–2 year–1 in the neutral streams compared with 1.02 and 1.27 g DW m–2 year–1 in the acidic streams. The P/B ratio differed only slightly among streams. 4. More adult L. nigra emerged in the neutral stream compared with the acidic stream, despite the density of the pre‐emerging fifth instar nymphs of L. nigra being similar in the two streams. Adult size (expressed as wing length) and female fitness were also significantly greater in the neutral stream. 5. Laboratory growth of L. nigra nymphs was significantly lower when fed acid conditioned alder leaves rather than neutral conditioned leaves. There was no difference in growth when nymphs were fed neutral conditioned leaves in acid and neutral water. 6. Our study shows multiple, sub‐lethal effects on life history of the acidification tolerant stonefly L. nigra in coniferous streams with low pH. The results suggest that these effects could be mediated primarily by low food quality. These findings add to the existing evidence that coniferous plantation forestry has a negative impact on stream ecosystems.  相似文献

The emergence of midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) from a wet gravel-pit   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
SUMMARY. Emerging adult chironomids were captured from a wet gravel-pit in the Midlands in 1975 and 1976. The emergence period in 1976 was earlier than in 1975 and this change was attributed to the higher temperatures during the early part of 1976. Forty-seven species were identified of which twenty-one were found in both years. However, only eighteen species represented more than 5% of the monthly emergence from any one trap. The timing and location of emergence of the common species is discussed in relation to the physical parameters of substratum, depth of water and vegetation at each trap site. Similarity indices were used to compare samples from each trap site and revealed a progressive change in the chironomid assemblage with depth, caused by a succession of species and a change in the structure of the assemblage with 'equitability' decreasing with increasing depth. The predominant species in 1975 were Cricotopus sylvestris, C. intersectus and Procladius choreus with a number of Chironominae present in both May and June. A trap in the littoral zone caught maximum numbers earlier than traps in open water. In 1976 the above species were still predominant and Tanypus punctipennis and T. vilipennis were also numerous. The Chironominae became proportionally more abundant as the season progressed. The abundance of emerging midges was low compared with other surveys due to the restricted emergence period, imagines being abundant only in June, and also due to the low numbers emerging.  相似文献

1. Stream ecologists have been puzzled by the apparent paradox that invertebrate populations persist in headwater streams despite the high frequency with which individuals drift downstream. To resolve this ‘drift paradox’, directions and distances of both larval and adult movement must be identified. Using over 50 interception traps in combination with results from several mark–capture experiments using 15N as a label, we tested the assumption that interception traps accurately represent the ultimate direction of adult insect flight. 2. In several streams in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 76% of 15N‐labelled stoneflies (Leuctra ferruginea) had flown upstream from where they emerged to where they were captured. In contrast, over 60% of stoneflies were flying downstream when captured, i.e. on the upstream side of an interception trap. 3. The instantaneous direction, as indicated by the side of the interception trap on which they were captured, indicated the ultimate flight direction for fewer than 1/3 of the individuals captured. Thus, such traps did not accurately reflect the ultimate flight patterns of individuals, as indicated by mark–capture data. 4. Conclusions drawn from interception trap counts regarding the direction of movement and the distribution and persistence of populations may need to be re‐evaluated. We suggest that better tracking methods, including mass mark–capture studies using stable isotopes, be used to evaluate the potentially complex patterns of adult insect movement and the consequences of that movement for individuals and populations.  相似文献

To control container-breeding mosquitoes in the small island of Minnajima (0.56 km2), northern Okinawa, Japan, laboratory-reared adults (aged 7-10 days) of Toxorhynchites splendens (Palawan strain), a mosquito with predatory larvae, were released repeatedly during 1984, 1986 and 1987. Thirteen species of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) occurred in artificial containers, ground pools or crab-holes on the island, the predominant species being Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus and Culex (Culex) quinquefasciatus. Predatory mosquito larvae of Culex (Lutzia) fuscanus and Cx (Lt.) halifaxii were found commonly in wet containers. In the first year of study, during a period of 54 days from 13 May to 5 July 1984, totals of 879 female and 806 male adults of Tx.splendens were released on six occasions. Similarly, between 29 April and 30 August 1986, totals of 2920 female and 2878 male adult Tx.splendens were released. In the third study year, totals of 2041 female and 1783 male Tx.splendens were released on eight occasions during 199 days from 23 April to 7 November 1987. After adult releases at two sites, the immature stages of Tx.splendens were found in 164 out of 502 traps in 1984, 421 out of 933 traps in 1986, and 151 out of 502 traps in 1987. The number of immatures of Tx.splendens present in each trap varied from 1 to 40 in 1984, 1 to 29 in 1986 and 1 to 9 in 1987. Numbers of immatures of the target species found in the traps during August-September averaged 71.9/trap/month in 1984, 114.7/trap/month in 1986 and 36.0/trap/month in 1987, significantly less in the traps with Tx.splendens than in those without them. The present field studies indicated that, in this small island, approximately 250 adult female and 200 male Tx.splendens per month should be released from April to November, and the releases should be carried out every year, in order to control effectively the target mosquitoes Ae.albopictus and Cx quinquefasciatus breeding in artificial containers in Minnajima.  相似文献

Forty-three species of Plecoptera were collected from emergence traps in an Oregon woodland stream. Adults occurred during every month of the year, but the largest numbers and most species emerged from April to June. Temporal separation of con-generic species occurred within the suborder of Filipalpia, but not in Setipalpia. Some species of Nemoura had split emergence periods. The onset of emergence for a species from year to year generally varied by less than 2 weeks. Peak emergence occurred at least 1-2 weeks after the start ofthe emergence period.  相似文献

Trapping experiments were conducted during the period of flight activity of the cherry fruit fly Rhagoletis cerasi L. in the area of Thessaloniki, northern Greece, during the years 1993-1997 to test several traps alone and in combination with different food attractants. Yellow sticky-coated visual traps were more effective than McPhail-type traps baited with different food attractants. Of the visual traps, the most effective was the yellow Rebell trap. The Rebell trap, provided with a dispenser containing a slow release formulation of ammonium acetate attached to the lower part of the trap, was found to be the most effective of all treatments tested, capturing approximately 50% more R. cerasi flies than the Rebell trap without any attractant. Ammonium carbonate dispensers did not increase the performance of Rebell traps. More mature females were captured in Rebell traps baited with or without ammonium acetate than in McPhail-type traps baited with ammonium acetate. This study demonstrates that Rebell traps baited with an ammonium acetate dispenser can provide a more effective tool for monitoring and mass trapping of R. cerasi than the currently used unbaited Rebell traps.  相似文献

Benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages were surveyed from similar erosional biotopes of four pristine streams in the remote Huron Mountain region of the upper peninsula of Michigan during the summers of 1992 and 1993. Semi-quantitative samples from five sites, each in a 1.5 km stretch of Mountain Stream, Pine River, Salmon-Trout River and Huron River, were the basis for structural and functional comparisons between streams. Ancillary water chemistry data reflect the relative pollution free nature of these streams. Both water chemistry and macroinvertebrate data served as the first baseline data for Huron Mountain streams. No new or rare species were found among the 194 species sampled. Temporal differences in taxonomic makeup within streams were due to differences among insect species life cycles. Taxonomic makeup between streams was generally similar, but certain differences are shown to be possibly related to factors such as lake sources, interspecific interactions, and stream size. Based on relative abundance of each functional feeding group, assemblages in all streams were functionally similar and collector-dominated. ANOVA results indicated significant differences in functional feeding group abundance and biomass between streams in every case. The functional variations reflected by specific differences in taxonomic composition between stream assemblages are discussed.  相似文献

An emergence trap based on the MPI Schlitz model was designed for use in the tropics and it was tested over one year in Palawan, the Philippines. Instructions for construction and use are given here. Only commonly available materials were used, except for the collection assembly made of UV‐light permeable acrylic glass. Heavy and bulky assemblies were avoided to enable easy transportation in the field. A special modification allows a fast and easy replacement of the screen when damaged by flooding, as is often required when traps are used downstream of headwaters. This type of trap also allows sampling of a wide littoral strip. Problems concerning the use of emergence traps in the humid tropics are discussed based on experience at different longitudinal stream sections in Palawan. The results presented here suggest that this trap should be used especially for qualitative or semi‐quantitative approaches. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Sixteen floating, box type emergence traps, each covering 0.1 m2, were placed along 150 m of a third-order stretch of the Bigoray River, a slow-flowing, vegetation-choked, brown-water muskeg stream. Effects of trap design, trap shading, length of sampling interval, and stream velocity on the number of midges caught was examined. Of the 112 species of Chironomidae caught, 32 species made up 90% of the catch and their emergence phenology is described in detail. There were more rare species than expected from Preston's lognormal distribution. Percentage of Bigoray species belonging to Tanypodinae, Orthocladiinae, Chironomini and Tanytarsini was 18%, 43%, 20%, and 19%, and was compared with 27 other studies on lotic chironomids. During the 140-day emergence period an average of 19.3 × 103 chironomids emerged per square meter of stream. Based on changes in male:female ratios throughout a species emergence period, it was postulated that 30% of the Bigoray chironomid species were univoltine, 50% were bivoltine, and 20% were trivoltine.  相似文献

The seasonal temporal and spatial distribution and emergence of overwintering and summer cohorts of host-seeking American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say) (Acari: Ixodidae), adults were examined for 5 years in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. Weekly drag cloth sampling was conducted from early March until late September 1992-1995 and early March until the end of May 1996. Overwintering adult cohorts became active in early to mid-April followed by bimodal host-seeking activity each year, with the duration and intensity of the first activity period being related to the previous year's summer cohort activity. The first activity peak extended from mid-April through late May and the second activity peak occurred in July. All host-seeking activity ceased by early August, except in 1995, when activity ended on 22 August. Laboratory survival of adults, collected weekly during 1993-1996, was used to estimate the emergence of summer adult cohorts. Summer adult cohorts became active in late May or early June and overlapped with overwintering adult host-seeking activity. The termination of host-seeking activity in overwintering adults could not be determined using the methods employed in this study and is most likely to have continued for the entire season. Host-seeking adults displayed contagious distribution patterns along trails bordering ecotone habitats, as determined by fitting a negative binomial frequency distribution to weekly sampling data. These patterns did not vary from year to year. In addition, the location of D. variabilis activity did not change from year to year, which suggests that microhabitats within apparently homogeneous environments enhance adult survival and lead to 'hot spots' of tick activity despite the ability of vertebrate hosts to disperse D. variabilis populations more widely. These data better define our understanding of D. variabilis adult seasonal and spatial host-seeking activity, estimate for the first time the intensity of summer cohort host-seeking activity, and relate summer cohort activity with spring activity the following year.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. A window trap is described which has been found useful in the study of the fight periodicity of chironomids and simuliids. the trap is simple to construct and can be operated in high winds.
2. Window traps were operated in 1977 and 1478 at Lake Myvatn. Iceland, when thirty-nine chironomid species and two simuliid species were caught. Most of the chironomids had two peaks in flight activity per year. e.g. Eukiefferietla minor, Cricotftpus tibialis. Pogonocladius consohrinus, Tanytaraus gracilentus and Micropsectra airofasciata. Chironomus islandicus and Heterotrissocladius grimshawi had one peak in activity in all traps. The flight activity of Prodadius istandicus, Orthocladius oblidens and Micropsectra Undrothi varied greatly between traps and years. Simulium vittatum had two peaks in flight activity, corresponding to the two generations developing per year. Variation in trap catches of .S. vittatum reflected populalion changes measured independently in a study of larval population dynamic  相似文献

The adult Trichoptera communities of a small watershed in the Québec Laurentian Hills were studied during two years with emergence and light traps.
Some 180 species and more than 164500 specimens were collected, belonging mainly to the families Hydropsychidae, Polycentropodidae and Leptoceridae; the Limnephilidae with 41 species were the most diverse family.
A comparison of catches in emergence and light traps revealed the importance of species from distant or specialized habitats in the composition of local communities. Two series of light trap catches show little similarity (Sanders index) although the traps were only some 60 m apart; this is in accordance with the suspected limited range of efficiency of light traps.
The Shannon-Wiener diversity index, the Simpson dominance index as well as the Lloyd and Ghelardi equitability index have been used to describe community structure; our four data series have also been shown to conform to the log-normal frequency distribution of Preston.
The sex-ratios of the abundant species are given. In most light trap series and in half the emergence trap series, the ratio differs significantly from 50:50; there is however no overall dominance of one sex. Differences exist between the ratios obtained for the same species in the two types of traps and probably reflect sexual differences in behaviour at light.  相似文献

1. Flight activity of Trichoptera, Plecoptera and Ephemeroptera was studied by sticky trapping for 12 months at five sites along a New Zealand mountain stream. Over 19 000 insects were captured by the traps, which were located in forest and grassland reaches, including a reach with intermittent flow.
2. Most species occurred predominantly in forest or grassland, although some were trapped throughout the stream. Longitudinal distributions of adults and their larvae were strongly correlated.
3. Flight periods of 24 caddisflies, three mayflies and four stoneflies ranged from 2 to 12 months. Six species were trapped in all months and 17 (55%) in more than 5 months.
4. The most abundant forest-dwelling caddisfly species were over-represented on the downstream sides of sticky traps located in, and immediately below, forest indicating a majority was flying upstream. Upstream flight compensates for downstream drift of larvae and should maximize the likelihood that forest-dwelling species will locate preferred habitat for egg, larval and/or adult development. Unlike the caddisflies, the stonefly Spaniocerca zelandica was over-represented on the upstream sides of traps, suggesting that some adults may float or fly downstream following emergence.
5. In contrast to forest-dwelling species, only one common caddisfly ( Oxyethira albiceps ) was over-represented on the downstream sides of traps at grassland sites. Unlike the forest-dwelling species, most species taken at the downstream sites probably came from a variety of sources, including a nearby stream.  相似文献

We tested the possibility that a lepidopteran leafminer, Coptotriche japoniella Puplesis and Diskus, inhibits the host plant Eurya japonica Thunberg from abscising mined leaves prematurely to increase its survivorship in immature stage. We monitored abscission patterns of mined leaves with sacrificed larvae, mined leaves with living larvae, and unmined leaves from April to July 2004 and 2005 until leafminers emerged as adults. Unmined leaves rarely abscised before July. Mined leaves with sacrificed larvae fell at a constant rate after May, abscising significantly more than unmined leaves. In contrast, mined leaves with living larvae rarely fell before adult emergence; afterward they abscised rapidly. We also examined larval/pupal survivorship and mortality sources on the ground and trees after leafminers completed larval development. Leafminers on the ground suffered a higher mortality from predation than those on trees, and thus they emerged as adults on the ground less successfully. These findings suggest that the leafminer C. japoniella prevents the host plant from abscising mined leaves prematurely until adult emergence, thereby increasing their survivorship.  相似文献

The effects of five differently-colored sticky traps in capturing adult Diaphorina citri were evaluated in citrus orchards. Trap catches of D. citri were monitored fortnightly on blue, green, red, white and yellow sticky cards placed on three citrus varieties during D. citri active flight period from April to July in south Texas. Evaluation of mean trap catches of each color by repeated measures analysis of variance produced three separate groups: yellow traps caught significantly more D. citri adults than the other four traps; red and green traps caught significantly more D. citri than blue and white traps, which were not significantly different. Although the number of adult psyllid captured on all trap types significantly increased with time during the trapping period, the performance of traps did not change with time. Trap catches were also significantly influenced by the citrus species; traps placed on lemon trees captured more D. citri than those placed on sweet orange and grapefruit, suggesting that plant preference exhibited by D. citri may influence the performance of traps. The ratio of trap reflectance between the 680 to 700 nm and the 450 nm was significantly correlated with total trap catches in all host species studied. Thus, this index was a good indicator of the attractiveness of adult D. citri to colored traps. Additionally, we compared the reflectance values of young versus mature flush shoots of the three host plants used in this study as related to densities of D. citri recorded in colored traps. We discussed the importance of visual cues in the host finding behavior of adult D. citri.  相似文献

The reproductive flight phenology of a neotropical ant assemblage   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Alate flights reflect an ant colony's investment in sexual reproduction and dispersal yet little is known about community‐wide patterns of alate phenology. Two Malaise traps (for 2 years) and two light traps (for 1 year) were used to explore the flight phenologies of 22 common neotropical species from Barro Colorado Island, Panama. 2. The traps caught 23 182 individuals and 286 species/morphospecies. The two trap methods shared only 18 species. Samples also differed in sexual composition: light trap samples were 80% female, Malaise trap samples were 2.6% female. 3. Of 22 common species, all but one flew over half the year, with about half flying every month of the year. These data, combined with a literature review, suggest a latitudinal gradient in alate flight season: one north temperate assemblage (42°N) averaged 1.6 lunar months per species. The ever‐warm tropical year provides a larger flight window that allows a diversity of phenologies, from continuous to strongly pulsed. 4. Rainfall was correlated with alate flights in one‐third of the species. Quantile regression suggested that high weekly rainfall was necessary but not sufficient to produce alate flights in about a quarter of the species. 5. By decreasing the number of nests releasing alates on a given day, long flight seasons may lower the probability of finding a mate. At the same time, long flight seasons may increase the opportunity of finding vacant nest sites. High population densities and high incidence of nest disturbance in this community may ameliorate the first cost while enhancing the second benefit.  相似文献

Fifty-seven species of caddisflies were identified in samples taken over a 7-month period from a large emergence trap placed on the mid-reach of a forested mountain stream in the Thuringian Forest, East Germany, in 1984. A total of 4,673 specimens were obtained during the sampling period. The community was dominated by collectors and shredders (52 % and 35.6 % of biomass) indicating a high input of allochthonous organic material from the bank trees as well as from upper stretches of the stream. The emergence periods and patterns of the common species are described and compared. Some species showed significant departures from a balanced sex-ratio. An explanation is proposed to account for the general unpredictability of sex-ratios in emergence traps. Unusual emergence patterns of 5 species are discussed in detail.  相似文献

Overwintered adult apple blossom weevils, Anthonomus pomorum (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), colonise apple trees, Malus domestica Borkh. (Rosaceae), in early spring. Information gained from a suitable monitoring technique could serve as a guide to determining the accurate timing for control measures. To assess tree colonisation by flight and crawling, Plexiglas flight traps and commercial screen traps developed for different curculionid species were used. Refuges were mimicked by a newly designed shelter trap based on transparent bubble wrap. The trap catches were contrasted to the limb jarring technique. Microclimate and weather conditions were determined over a trial period of one and a half months. The shelter traps caught a high number of weevils irrespective of weather conditions, and thus performed better than both flight and screen traps. The temperature level within the shelter traps was slightly, but significantly, higher than on the trunk, indicating that weevils exploit microclimatic differences and occupy thermally favourable refuges. The seasonal culmination of colonisation as determined by shelter traps coincided with that as determined by the two methods used to monitor weevil movement towards host trees (flight traps and screen traps). The data indicated that not only flight, but also crawling as quantified by the screen traps contributes substantially to spring colonisation. Captures by all three types of traps over the spring season were significantly positively correlated with each other, but in most respects not with the results of the limb jarring. We conclude that the newly designed shelter trap will be useful for accurately monitoring the seasonal course of colonisation and holds promise for determining the timing of interventions.  相似文献

The abundance and taxonomic richness of adult caddisfly faunas were determined at varing distances (up to 200 m) away from three North Island, New Zealand, streams to help define appropriate forested riparian zone widths for adult aquatic insects. Adults were collected using sticky traps and ultraviolet light traps on four occasions over summer. Light traps were more effective at catching caddisflies than sticky traps, but both methods gave similar patterns of declining abundance and taxonomic richness with distance from the stream edge. Abundances of total caddisflies at 20 m were <21% of those caught at the stream edge for both trapping techniques. The same trends were evident for abundances of most common species in light traps, whereas bimodal peaks were evident with distance from the channel edge for percentage females of three common species. More than 30% of species caught at the stream edge was found in light traps at least 70 m into forest at all sites. A faster rate of decline for abundance than richness with distance away from the stream reflected the relatively large distances travelled by representatives of many species. Similar results from the three sites for numbers and species richness indicate that the main area of activity for adult Trichoptera in forested riparian zones was within 30 m of the stream edge at these sites.  相似文献
