For collecting mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) the outdoor catching efficiency of four types of trapping devices baited with carbon dioxide (CO2, 300 ml/ min) was evaluated and compared in two areas of Tanzania. The types of traps employed were: the CDC miniature trap with the incandescent light bulb switched on or off; electric nets (ENT) and a Counterflow Geometry (CFG) trap. In Njage, southeast Tanzania, Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto was the most abundant of the seven mosquito species obtained, comprising of 74.3% of the total number caught (n=2,171). In Muheza, north-east Tanzania, Culex quinquefasciatus Say was the predominant species (90.9%) among 1,080 caught. At both localities the CFG trap was superior to the CDC trap with light-on or light-off for sampling both An. gambiae and Cx. quinquefasciatus. Efficiency of the CFG trap and ENT were similar for sampling these species of mosquitoes (P > 0.05). However, ENT was superior to the CDC trap with light-off for collecting both species. Significantly more (P < 0.05) Cx. quinquefasciatus were obtained by the CDC trap with light-off than with light-on, especially outdoors. It is concluded that both ENT and the CFG are effective tools for sampling populations of An. gambiae and Cx. quinquefasciatus outdoors.  相似文献

Females of Culex quinquefasciatus Say and Culex tarsalis Coquillet (Diptera: Culicidae) in the host-seeking stage were released and video recorded in three dimensions in a large field wind tunnel as they flew to four kinds of CO2-baited mosquito traps. The trapping efficiency (number of mosquitoes approaching compared to the number caught) was determined for each trap type. The Encephalitis Virus Surveillance (EVS), Mosquito Magnet Freedom (MMF) and Mosquito Magnet Liberty (MML) traps captured only 13-16% of approaching Cx. quinquefasciatus females, whereas the Mosquito Magnet-X (MMX) trap captured 58%. Similar results were obtained for Cx. tarsalis. Orientation behaviour and flight parameters of mosquitoes approaching the four traps were compared. Mosquitoes spent the most time orienting to the EVS trap. Flight speed decreased as mosquitoes entered the vicinity of each trap and a large portion of their time was spent within 30 cm downwind of the traps. Flights became highly tortuous downwind of the poorly performing traps and just upwind of the MMX trap. Differences between traps and possible explanations for the superior performance of the MMX trap are considered.  相似文献

A large field wind tunnel was used to compare four types of CO2-baited mosquito traps. This study compared the plume structure and concentration of CO2 emitted by each trap, flow of suction into the trapping systems, flow of CO2 being released, trap shape and configuration, differences in visual appearance, and differences in temperature and humidity of emissions at the source of CO2 compared to ambient air. The structure of the CO2 plumes emitted by each trap differed considerably. All four plumes were turbulent, causing the concentration of CO2 within several metres of the source to attenuate to between 375 and 875 p.p.m. The Encephalitis Virus Surveillance (EVS) trap emitted concentrations of CO2 exceeding 20,000 p.p.m., the detection limits of our equipment, whereas the Mosquito Magnet Freedom (MMF), Mosquito Magnet Liberty (MML) and Mosquito Magnet X (MMX) traps released CO2 at peaks of about 3500, 7200 and 8700 p.p.m., respectively. The MMX trap produced the greatest air velocity at both the suction inlet and CO2 outlet, followed by the MMF, MML and the EVS traps, respectively.  相似文献

Studies of pheromone traps for Cydia pomonella, A rchips podana and A doxophyes or ana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) were made in United Kingdom apple orchards from 1974 to 1976. Compared with light traps, they proved easier to operate and, with the exception of those set for Adoxophyes orana , were more effective monitors. There was considerable site-to-site variation in the pattern of weekly catches, and in total catches for each season, such variability often masking inter-regional differences. The data proved useful for deciding if and when sprays should be applied in individual orchards, and were also used as a basis for district spray warnings. Thresholds below which treatment was generally unnecessary were five moths/trap/ wk for C. pomonella and 20 moths/trap/wk for Archips podana , but results for Adoxophyes orana were inconclusive. Fruit damage in monitored orchards sprayed as advised was generally low.  相似文献

Objective To identify recent trends in, and factors associated with, resistance to antituberculosis drugs in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.Design Cohort of tuberculosis cases reported to the enhanced tuberculosis surveillance system matched to data on drug susceptibility and national strain typing data.Setting England, Wales, and Northern Ireland 1998-2005.Main outcome measures Unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios for drug resistance and associated factors. Proportion of multidrug resistant tuberculosis cases clustered.Results 28 620 culture confirmed cases were available for analysis. The proportion of cases resistant to isoniazid increased from 5% to 7%. Rifampicin resistance increased from 1.0% to 1.2% and multidrug resistance from 0.8% to 0.9%. Ethambutol and pyrazinamide resistance remained stable at around 0.4% and 0.6%, respectively. Regression analyses showed a significant increase in isoniazid resistance outside London (odds ratio 1.04, 95% confidence interval 1.01 to 1.07, a year, associated with changes in age (0.98, 0.98 to 0.99, a year), place of birth (1.49, 1.16 to 1.92), and ethnicity (P<0.05). In London, the rise (1.05, 1.02 to 1.08, a year) was related mainly to an ongoing outbreak. Increases in rifampicin resistance (1.06, 1.01 to 1.11, a year) and multidrug resistance (1.06, 1.00 to 1.12, a year) were small. A fifth of patients with multidrug resistant tuberculosis in 2004-5 had indistinguishable strain types, and one case was identified as extensively drug resistant.Conclusions The rise in isoniazid resistance reflects increasing numbers of patients from sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian subcontinent, who might have acquired resistance abroad, and inadequate control of transmission in London. The observed increases highlight the need for early case detection, rapid testing of susceptibility to drugs, and improved treatment completion.  相似文献

Very simply constructed aquatic sticky light traps employing a chemical solution emitting a bright light attracted large numbers of all larval instars, but few pupae of Aedes cantans in trials in England. During April numbers of larvae per trap ranged from 73±14.2 to 163±19.9, whereas dipping with a ladle yielded only 6.9±5.5 to 11.8±7.7 larvae/dip. The traps were also effective in sampling larvae of Culiseta morsitans and in Sierra Leone larvae of Aedes aegypti. It was concluded that sticky light traps could be valuable in sampling relative numbers of mosquito larvae and merited further evaluation.
Résumé Des pièges adhésifs lumineux faciles à réaliser sont construits pour les captures des larves de moustiques. Ils sont formés de paires de boîtes de Pétri en plastique contenant une solution émettrice de lumière provenant de bâtons lumineux chimiques Cyalume®. Chaque piège est recouvert d'une feuille de plastique de 16×16 cm enduite d'une substance qui reste adhésive sous l'eau. Les larves de moustiques attirées vers la source lumineuse viennent se coller à la feuille adhésive.Ces pièges ont été utilisés avec succès en Angleterre pour l'échantillonnage de tous les stades larvaires d'Aedes cantans, mais pas avec le même efficacité pour les nymphes. Des tests plus restreints ont montré que la technique était également utilisable pour les larves de Culiseta morsitans. Les nombres moyens d'A. cantans capturés pendant une piode de 12 h (73±14,2–163±19,9) étaient supérieux à ceux obtenus en plongeant une louche (6,9±5,5–11,8±7,7). En utilisant les pièges adhésifs lumineux, les captures moyennes de C. morsitans étaient également supérieures (12,6±4,7–35,8±8,9) contre (5,7±6,1–8,9±7,8) avec la méthode de la louche.En Sierra Leone, des stades larvaires immatures d'A. aegypti se développant dans des containers de stockage d'eau ont également pu être capturés à l'aide de ces pièges.Bien qu'une évaluation plus poussée soit encore nécessaire, il ne fait aucun doute que ces pièges adhésifs lumineux aient un intérêt considérable pour l'échantillonnage larvaire dans les sites inaccessibles, tels que les trous d'arbres ou les trous de crabes, où les méthodes d'échantillonage classiques sont souvent d'un emploi difficile.

Mosquito populations in southern England were sampled by animal baited, carbon dioxide and light traps. Cylindrical traps baited with rabbits caught both zoophilous and ornithophilous species, but very few individuals were caught when they were baited with chickens. Direct bait catches, however, showed that ornithophilous species were not attracted to rabbits outside traps. Many more species were caught in Trinidad traps baited with dry ice than in cylindrical traps. A New Jersey light trap caught unfed females and males of a few species, many common species were not attracted to light.
Zusammenfassung In Trinidad-Fallen, die mit Labor-Mäusen beködert auf der Insel Brownsea in Südengland aufgestellt waren, wurden nur sehr wenige Aedes detritus und Mansonia richiardii gefangen. Zylindrische, mit Kaninchen beköderte Metallfallen fingen erwachsene Anopheles plumbeus, Ae. cinereus, Ae. punctor, Ae. detritus, Culiseta annulata, C. torrentium, M. richiardii und auch C. morsitans und C. pipiens, obwohl sie hauptsächlich Vogelparasiten sind. Außerhalb der Fallen wurden Kaninchen von M. richiardii und Aedes-Arten gestochen aber nicht von ornithophilen Arten. In Fallen, die mit Hühnchen beködert waren, wurden nur sehr wenige C. morsitans und C. pipiens gefangen, und keine versuchten die Hühnchen außerhalb der Fallen zu stechen. Mit Trockeneis beköderte Trinidad- und Zylinder-Fallen fingen Ae. punctor, Ae. detritus, Ae. cantans, Ae. annulata, C. morsitans, C. pipiens und M. richiardii, dazu wurden in Trinidad-Fallen A. plumbeus, A. claviger und Ae. geniculatus gefangen. Sie fingen mehr als die zylindrischen Fallen.Eine New Jersey-Lichtfalle fing 12 Mückenarten, am häufigsten Ae. detritus. Nüchterne Weibchen herrschten vor, Männchen bildeten nur einen geringen Prozentsatz des Fanges.

OBJECTIVE: To identify changes in the occurrence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease that might be related to the epidemic of bovine spongiform encephalopathy. DESIGN: Epidemiological surveillance of the United Kingdom population for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease based on (a) referral of suspected cases by neurologists, neuropathologists, and neurophysiologists and (b) death certificates. SETTING: England and Wales during 1970-84, and whole of the United Kingdom during 1985-96. SUBJECTS: All 662 patients identified as sporadic cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Age distribution of patients, age specific time trends of disease, occupational exposure to cattle, potential exposure to causative agent of bovine spongiform encephalopathy. RESULTS: During 1970-96 there was an increase in the number of sporadic cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease recorded yearly in England and Wales. The greatest increase was among people aged over 70. There was a statistically significant excess of cases among dairy farm workers and their spouses and among people at increased risk of contact with live cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy. During 1994-6 there were six deaths from sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the United Kingdom in patients aged under 30. CONCLUSIONS: The increase in the incidence of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the high incidence in dairy farmers in the United Kingdom may be unrelated to bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The most striking change in the pattern of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the United Kingdom after the epidemic of bovine spongiform encephalopathy is provided by the incidence in a group of exceptionally young patients with a consistent and unusual neuropathological profile. The outcome of mouse transmission studies and the future incidence of the disease in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, will be important in judging whether the agent causing bovine spongiform encephalopathy has infected humans.  相似文献

The association of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) with SLE is well established yet the causal variants arising from this region remain to be identified, largely due to inadequate study design and the strong linkage disequilibrium demonstrated by genes across this locus. The majority of studies thus far have identified strong association with classical class II alleles, in particular HLA-DRB1*0301 and HLA-DRB1*1501. Additional associations have been reported with class III alleles; specifically, complement C4 null alleles and a tumor necrosis factor promoter SNP (TNF-308G/A). However, the relative effects of these class II and class III variants have not been determined. We have thus used a family-based approach to map association signals across the MHC class II and class III regions in a cohort of 314 complete United Kingdom Caucasian SLE trios by typing tagging SNPs together with classical typing of the HLA-DRB1 locus. Using TDT and conditional regression analyses, we have demonstrated the presence of two distinct and independent association signals in SLE: HLA-DRB1*0301 (nominal p = 4.9 x 10(-8), permuted p < 0.0001, OR = 2.3) and the T allele of SNP rs419788 (nominal p = 4.3 x 10(-8), permuted p < 0.0001, OR = 2.0) in intron 6 of the class III region gene SKIV2L. Assessment of genotypic risk demonstrates a likely dominant model of inheritance for HLA-DRB1*0301, while rs419788-T confers susceptibility in an additive manner. Furthermore, by comparing transmitted and untransmitted parental chromosomes, we have delimited our class II signal to a 180 kb region encompassing the alleles HLA-DRB1*0301-HLA-DQA1*0501-HLA-DQB1*0201 alone. Our class III signal importantly excludes independent association at the TNF promoter polymorphism, TNF-308G/A, in our SLE cohort and provides a potentially novel locus for future genetic and functional studies.  相似文献

The accumulated data indicate that mesostomid flatworms are efficient predators of mosquito larvae. This paper presents the 1st published records for 3Mesostoma Ehrenberg, including 2 predators of mosquitoes.Mesostoma californicum Hyman,Mesostoma vernale Hyman, andMesostoma sp. cf.lingua Abildgaard were discovered in a temporary pool in Massachusetts.M. californicum andM. sp. cf.lingua were found to be efficient predators on mosquitoe larvae.

Over the past decade the United Kingdom had the second highest number of cases of imported malaria among European countries. There has been a substantial rise in recorded cases of malaria during the past three years though some of it may be due to improved notification. Fatal cases of malaria in visitors to Africa have averaged 6.5% of reported infections due to Plasmodium falciparum. Attacks of vivax malaria may occur several months after travellers return from a malarious country.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To evaluate the United Kingdom Huntington''s disease presymptomatic testing programme. DESIGN--Postal questionnaire survey to collect data on all tests performed by clinical genetics centres between 1987 and 1990. SETTING--Genetic centres providing presymptomatic testing in the United Kingdom. SUBJECTS--248 subjects at risk of Huntington''s disease who had presymptomatic testing at their request. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Sex, age, prior risk, and risk after testing. RESULTS--The risk of carrying the Huntington disease gene was reduced for 151 (61%) of the applicants and raised for 97 (39%). 158 (64%) of the subjects were female and 90 (36%) male. The median age at which the results were given was 32.5 years. CONCLUSIONS--The demand for testing was lower than expected and may have reached its peak in 1990. The excess of low risk results was not fully explained by the age effect. All the genetics centres concerned have agreed a common service protocol which requires extensive pre-test counselling and post-test follow up. The worth of the procedure remains to be decided. The availability of a large body of pooled data from all the United Kingdom testing centres, which individually are likely to have only a few results, will form a valuable resource for monitoring the long term psychosocial impact of testing.  相似文献

R.J. BIRTLES, N. DOSHI, N.A. SAUNDERS AND T.G. HARRISON. 1991. A series of strains, presumptively identified as legionellas on the basis of their nutritional requirements and biochemical reactivity, were isolated from two unrelated environmental sources in the UK. Representatives of each of these series had a restriction endonuclease digest pattern indistinguishable from that of the Legionella quinlivanii type strain (1442-AUS-E) and the identity of these strains was confirmed by DNA homology studies. Serological examination of the two strains showed that they were distinct from the type strain 1442-AUS-E but indistinguishable from each other. A second serogroup, L. quinlivanii serogroup 2 (type strain LC870; NCTC 12434), is proposed to accommodate these strains.  相似文献

Over 2,000 cases of imported malaria have been confirmed by blood examination. Ninety percent. of cases from tropical Africa were infected with P. falciparum. Most of the patients were Caucasians and had primary infections. All developed fever within a month after arrival and most of them within two weeks of arrival. In some patients malaria parasites were seen in routine blood films.Developing forms of P. falciparum were always present in the peripheral blood of patients suffering from a primary attack which was not diagnosed or treated until a week or more after the onset of fever.All deaths investigated were caused by P. falciparum and were primary infections.In not one of the P. falciparum infections did the victim continue taking prophylactic drugs for more than a few days after leaving the endemic area. Had drugs been continued for one month probably not a single overt case of P. falciparum would have occurred.A primary attack of P. falciparum malaria is seldom, if ever, classical in that the fever is never tertian and may resemble clinically many other diseases.Children in boarding-schools returning from the tropics should be supplied with prophylactic tablets and instructions to the matron. If there is an epidemic of a fever any students who have recently returned from the tropics should have a blood film examined for malaria.The risk of contracting malaria among drug addicts is considerable, especially with P. falciparum.  相似文献
