The fish stock of a deep temperate, mesotrophic lake was sampled at different depths using a fixed‐frame fry trawl, during two nights in mid‐September 2009. Additionally, horizontal and vertical hydroacoustics were used simultaneously to evaluate fish abundance and biomass estimates obtained by the trawl. Roach Rutilus rutilus and smelt Osmerus eperlanus were the dominant species of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) fish in the trawl catches from the surface layers (0–9 m). Bleak Alburnus alburnus dominated the catch of older fish in the upper part of the surface profile (0–6 m). Around the thermocline (9–13 m) smelt dominated the catches of both the YOY and older fish. Beneath the thermocline (13–36 m) vendace Coregonus albula dominated the catch of YOY fish, and smelt was the only species of older fish in the trawl catches. Species composition, abundance and biomass of the YOY and older fish were heterogeneous throughout the depth profiles of the lake, but only abundance differed significantly between the layers. The hydroacoustics gave relatively similar estimates of abundance and biomass to those obtained by the trawl in all the depths sampled. Our results indicate that there is a clear separation of small fish of different species along the vertical profile of a deep temperate lake during the night, and an unequal vertical distribution of fish abundance and biomass. The similarity of the trawl and hydroacoustics estimates of abundances and biomass indicated that the trawl sampling did not cause important avoidance reactions of small fish during the night in this deep temperate lake (© 2012 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In this study, the effects of the eye fluke Diplostomum pseudospathaceum (Trematoda) infection on over‐winter survival of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) European bitterling Rhodeus amarus (Cyprinidae) were examined between September 2010 and April 2011. The fish were reared in semi‐natural conditions to ensure that results were not confounded by other parasite infections. The cumulative mortality of R. amarus from November until April was significantly higher in D. pseudospathaceum‐infected fish (57·3%) compared to controls (42·1%). Infection of the parental generation did not have any effect on the mortality of juveniles. The results indicate that D. pseudospathaceum infection increases over‐winter mortality of YOY R. amarus. The possible mechanisms causing mortality are discussed.  相似文献

To test the influence of the largest Central Amazon fish consumption centre on the potential fish population recruitment, young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) abundances of matrinxã Brycon amazonicus (Spix and Agassiz, 1829), jaraquis Semaprochilodus insignis (Jardine and Schomburgk, 1841), S. taeniurus (Valenciennes, 1821) and tambaqui Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier, 1818) were estimated in two floodplain areas of the middle Solimões‐Amazon River – one near the city of Manaus and the other 500 km from Manaus – in the 2007–2008 flooding. Matrinxã presented the highest abundance among the four species, with 87.8% of captured individuals. The difference was significant in the representation of YOY matrinxãs between the two studied areas, with the input more significant in the last months of flooding in the area 500 km from Manaus. Jaraquis represented 12.1% of captures and showed no difference between areas. Tambaqui abundance was shown to be critical in both areas, with the capture of only 28 YOY (0.1%), and with no differences between the two floodplains. Matrinxã and jaraquis are more likely to present stabile stocks in the middle Solimões‐Amazon River; on the other hand, matrinxã requires attention due to differences in the YOY input between the two areas and in their low input in the Upper Amazon River, near Manaus. Based on the present work and on the landing history in Manaus, tambaqui is still considered as under strong overexploitation, showing some of the characteristics of overfishing recruitment in the middle Solimões‐Amazon.  相似文献

Distribution and density by habitat for age‐0, young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum, 1792), were compared for two Maine estuaries to help define essential fish habitat for this life history stage. Two estuaries (Weskeag River and Penobscot Bay) along Mid‐coast Maine were sampled monthly with daytime 1.0 m2 fixed‐frame throw traps around neap low tide, May–December over two consecutive years (2003–2004). Both eelgrass and adjacent sand/mud (20–60 cm deep) were randomly sampled with equal effort (4–12 samples per month) at two sites in both the Weskeag River and Penobscot Bay. Significantly higher densities of YOY winter flounder (2–9 cm TL) occurred in eelgrass relative to sand/mud. Density increased significantly in both habitats in 2004, and was higher in Penobscot Bay relative to the Weskeag River. YOY densities compared by eelgrass coverage within throw traps were found to be significantly higher in eelgrass that exceeded 30% coverage when compared with adjacent sand/mud areas and eelgrass coverage of 10–20%. YOY occurred in all months sampled (May–December); no density differences existed by month. These results indicate that very shallow (<0.6 m) eelgrass habitat is of key importance to YOY winter flounder in Maine estuaries and should be viewed as essential fish habitat (EFH) for this species and life stage.  相似文献

The effect of water temperature on behaviour and life history of wintering age‐0 = young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) northern sturgeons (populations using winter refuge habitat) is poorly understood. Using artificial stream tanks, we observed the effect of water temperature on 1) day‐time activity of cultured YOY Kootenai River white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus, during two winters (2008 and 2009–2010), and 2) observed day‐time activity of cultured YOY Connecticut River shortnose sturgeon, A. brevirostrum, in the winter, 2009–2010. Activity of YOY was measured every 2 to 7 days by visual or video observations on each fish to determine the mean number of 10 cm2 square gridlines on the tank bottom crossed by all fish in each replicate tank (two replicate tanks, 10 fish in each tank). Daily water temperature was recorded by a logger in one tank every 20 min, 24 hr per day. In 2008, YOY A. transmontanus activity was positively related to decreasing mean daily temperature (R2 = 0.96, p < 0.01) with 0 to 5 gridlines (range) crossed by all fish during observation periods at the coldest temperature (≤3°C). During the winter of 2009–2010, activity of both species was significantly related to decreasing temperature, and again, a mean of 0 to 5 gridlines (range) were crossed by fish at ≤3°C. We accept the hypothesis that YOY of both species are mostly inactive in the day when winter water temperature decreases to ≤3°C. Using the daytime inactivity temperature threshold of 3°C for YOY, and recent temperatures in river reaches where wild wintering YOY likely occur, we predict (a) wild wintering YOY A. transmontanus are moderately active in the day, may be energy challenged due to elevated temperatures from the warm river discharge by Libby Dam, and have poor survival in the regulated Kootenay River, and (b) wintering YOY Connecticut River A. brevirostrum are moderately active most winter months due to elevated natural river temperatures and may be energy challenged. More research is needed on YOY wintering activity and energetics relative to temperature to insure management of river temperature includes conservation of sturgeons.  相似文献

This study compares the effectiveness and representativeness of electrofishing, snorkelling, seining, baited lift netting, multi‐mesh gillnetting, baited fish traps, fyke netting, angling and longline fishing, considering three typical lentic flood‐plain habitats at different times of day. Electrofishing was by far the most effective method yielding highest species richness, species trait representation and catch per unit of effort (CPUE), followed by seining. For single species like dace Leuciscus leuciscus, European ruffe Gymnocephalus cernua, common bream Abramis brama and silver bream Blicca bjoerkna, seining was more effective than electrofishing. With both methods, some species were more consistently caught during night, dusk or dawn than during daylight. All other methods tested cannot be generally recommended for fish community assessments in shallow backwaters due to their low representativeness of species inventory and generally low CPUE. Based on these results, electrofishing of 30 m transect replicates at different times of day for monitoring the fish community in shallow backwaters, can be recommended, enabling the maximum possible comparability to adjacent river habitats. Seining should be considered as an alternative if accessibility of habitats is restricted or electrofishing is prohibited. The 25 species detected in the backwaters also suggest that these habitats contribute a large proportion of fish diversity and should be included in standard assessments of river ecological status.  相似文献

This study examined the formation of morphological defences by two coexisting Daphnia species, the large-sized D. pulicaria (2 mm) and the small-sized D. mendotae (1.4 mm), in response to the presence of young-of-the-year (YOY) yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and invertebrate predators (Chaoborus, Leptodora) during summer in a mesotrophic lake. We hypothesized that due to differential size-selective predation risk by YOY fish and invertebrates, the large-sized and the small-sized Daphnia species would show different morphological responses to predation threats. We followed changes in two morphological traits (relative length of the tail spine in D. pulicaria and of the helmet in D. mendotae) among different periods during summer according to YOY fish and invertebrate predation. We defined four YOY fish predation periods based on the presence of YOY perch in the pelagic zone of the lake and the relative abundance of Daphnia preys in their gut contents, and two invertebrate predation periods based on exclusive or mutual occurrence of the invertebrate predators. The large-sized (D. pulicaria) and the small-sized (D. mendotae) species showed different morphological responses to YOY fish and invertebrate predators, respectively. The tail spine ratio of the juveniles and adults of D. pulicaria did not change in response to YOY fish predation or to invertebrate predation. A gradual increase in the helmet ratio was observed in the small-sized D. mendotae over the summer period. This change was related to the co-occurrence of the invertebrate predators (Chaoborus and Leptodora) and to YOY fish predation. The warmer temperature cannot be accounted for helmet elongation since it was constant across depths, and not related with the co-occurrence of D. mendotae and YOY perch. Even though electrofishing is commonly used to sample Neogobius spp. and other swimbladder‐lacking benthic fishes, its efficiency is considered poor especially in habitats with abundant interstitial spaces. To determine the efficiency of electrofishing Neogobius spp. and quantitatively estimate sampling bias in a riprap (shot rock used to armor shorelines against water erosion) mesohabitat, riprap fragments were set up in a natural riverine environment. The experimental setting enabled us to collect all fish remaining in the riprap fragments after these areas had been electrofished. The sampling efficiency of electrofishing Neogobius spp. (dominated by Neogobius melanostomus) varied between 17.6 and 47.4% (mean 29.7%), while percids (possessing a well‐developed swim bladder) were collected with 74.6% efficiency. Fish size had no effect on the probability of capturing Neogobius spp. by electrofishing. Within Neogobius spp., N. melanostomus was less susceptible to electrofishing than Neogobius gymnotrachelus (23.7% and 50.1%, respectively). Decreased electrofishing efficiency in areas of rocky substrate should be considered in estimates of total abundance of Neogobius spp., especially if they are to be compared with catches of other species possessing swim bladders.  相似文献

Substantial seasonal changes in resource use associated with enhanced water‐column use were revealed in stream‐living YOY Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus during the ice‐free season. In July, YOY individuals showed a diet dominated by aquatic invertebrates (mainly Chironomidae larvae), but despite the small size of the fish, the abundance of terrestrial insects in their diet increased markedly from July to September (from 1·9 to 62·8%). Similarly, the frequency of surface drifting foragers, i.e. individuals feeding on allochthonous resources, increased from July to September (from 20·6 to 80%); allochthonous resources thus constituting an important energy subsidy for YOY S. alpinus during the late sub‐Arctic summer.  相似文献

Horizontal zonation of fish reproduction, a lotic-to-lentic succession similar to that seen with increasing stream order, was evident from the relative abundance of larval and 0 + juvenile fishes in three floodplain spawning and nursery areas (lotic, semi-lotic, lentic) of the Upper Rhône River, France. Although the lotic and lentic ecosystems provided similar estimates of standing crop (0 + juveniles), differences were apparent in the reproductive and trophic guild structure of the YOY taxocoenoses at the three sites. A new sampling approach (Random Point-Abundance Sampling and modified electrofishing) is described for early-life fish ecology. The electrofishing method employed is mobile, effective for all sizes of larvae and 0 + juveniles of most species, quantitative, and applicable to a number of freshwater situations; and the punctual data resulting from this sampling approach are comparable both spatially and temporally.  相似文献

In this study, a comparison of point abundance sampling (PAS) electrofishing, angling with two different hook sizes and trap‐based fishing was performed in a non‐wadeable river to analyse their effects on catch per unit effort (CPUE) and population characteristics of invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus. PAS electrofishing was identified as the most effective (mean ± s.e . CPUE = 57 ± 4 N. melanostomus min?1) and least selective method in terms of size, feeding status and species composition. Angling had the second highest CPUE, but was more size selective and resulted in a higher proportion of males compared to electrofishing [overall sex ratio angling (female:male) = 1:0·92, electrofishing 1:0·65]. Owing to low CPUE (0·012 ± 0·004) and low frequency of occurrence, minnow traps were least suitable for N. melanostomus population assessment. The results of this study suggest that a higher degree of standardization and inter‐calibration is useful to achieve better comparability of population data of invasive N. melanostomus and other benthic fish species.  相似文献

Wetlands such as rice fields and associated canals are congenial habitats for different fishes and provide the foundation of rice‐fish culture. The selection of suitable fish species determines the success for this linkage of aquaculture and agriculture. An assessment of fish assemblages in selected rice fields and associated canals in West Bengal, India documented the candidate species for culture and conservation in rice fields. Indigenous minnow traps made of bamboo were employed in the rice fields and canals for a period of 3 months, to collect and record the fish abundance. A total of 531 fishes representing 19 different species were caught from the rice fields in 30 sampling efforts. From the canals, 13 different fish species totaling 676 fishes were collected in 80 sampling efforts. The fish collected per trap in the rice fields (mean 17.7 ± 1.97 SE) remained significantly different (t = 4.461, df = 112; P < 0.001) from those of the canals (mean 8.05 ± 1.09 SE). Diversity indices ranged between 1.91 and 2.01, with a 53% similarity between the rice fields and canals. Among the fish species collected, Badis badis, Colisa fasciatus and C. lalia exhibited high abundance; the two species Heteropneustes fossilis and Mystus vittatus established as threatened fish categories, showed low abundance. The fish species collected were important as food resources and the ornamental fish trade, and many of them bear potential in regulating mosquitoes in the rice fields. These fish assemblages in the rice fields and associated canals suggest a rice‐fish culture potential for integrating food and health.  相似文献

The immune status of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus was evaluated in fish collected from six areas around Long Island, NY, U.S.A. representing more urban areas with high population density in the west, to less densely populated more rural areas in to the east. Gene expression markers for innate immunity (pleurocidin) and contaminant exposure (cytochrome P4501A; cyp1a) were measured in liver and fin of fish collected at each site. Expression of pleurocidin was significantly higher in fin than liver, but was highly variable among individuals. Some statistically significant differences in pleurocidin expression among sites were observed, although elevated levels were not associated with degree of urbanization. Expression was related in part to fish size: a positive correlation between expression and total length (LT) of fish was observed with the largest LT class (>125 mm) exhibiting significantly elevated pleurocidin expression as compared with fish in the smaller LT class. This indicates that immune competency may increase with age. No site‐specific differences in cyp1a expression were observed. These data suggest that exposure to aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants is fairly widespread throughout the study area and that any differences in pleurocidin expression in YOY P. americanus are probably due to other factors. Antimicrobial activity was also measured as a functional indicator of immune response. Activity was highly variable, showing no significant site‐specific differences, and no significant correlation to pleurocidin expression. The lack of correlation between pleurocidin expression and antimicrobial activity indicates that other antimicrobial peptides may be active against the bacteria tested or that other factors are influencing antimicrobial activity. This is the first quantitative evaluation of pleurocidin expression in YOY P. americanus from an urban area. Further work is needed to characterize factors controlling pleurocidin expression, as well as other indicators of immune response in young fish.  相似文献

The present study focused on the fish fauna of the 44‐year‐old Coaracy Nunes reservoir in the northern Amazon basin, producing estimates of the growth constant (k), maximum and asymptotic body lengths and weights, natural mortality (M), the consumption/biomass ratio (QB) (intake of food by a group over a year), the Aspect ratio (Ar) of the caudal fin, growth performance (Φ), longevity, and trophic level for 45 fish species. Species collection was divided into eight sampling campaigns between May 2009 and July 2010. Gillnets were used in four of the sampling sites. The results revealed that (i) the most predominant species are Ageneiosus ucayalensis, Hemiodus unimaculatus, Serrasalmus gibbus and Geophagus proximus; (ii) small and medium‐sized fishes predominated in the community, characterized by high rates of growth and natural mortality, consistent with a predominance of r‐strategists; (iii) the body lengths of the detritivore species were similar to those of the piscivores, which are normally larger, but with higher growth rates, more similar to those recorded for the omnivores; (iv) consumption/biomass ratio (QB) × body length relationship is higher in the detritivores than in the omnivores and piscivores (which were similar to each other). Overall, the reservoir habitat appears to be advantageous to detritivorous fish species.  相似文献

Given the scarcity of information suitable for other forms of fish stock assessments, the growth, and mortality of 10 important marine exploited fishes in China's coastal seas were estimated, based on published length‐frequency data and the ELEFAN approach and software. The resulting parameters, complemented with growth curves from FishBase were then used for yield‐per‐recruit analyses. These 10 species were both traditional commercial species (Trichiurus lepturus, Larimichthys polyactis, Scomber japonicus) and less commercial interest species (Coilia nasus, Engraulis japonicus, Decapterus maruadsi, Psenopsis anomala, Coilia mystus, Setipinna tenuifilis, Harpadon nehereus). The yield‐per‐recruit analyses indicated that the fishing mortality experienced by these 10 fish species was very high, especially in view of the extremely small cod‐end mesh sizes deployed by Chinese trawlers, of about 10 mm or less (vs. 25 mm as minimum legal size). More precisely, all 10 species suffered from growth overfishing, which was very pronounced in large species. Indeed, enlarging cod‐end mesh size, by increasing mean sizes at first capture, would increase yield‐per‐recruit for all 10 fish species by a factor of up to 2.5. Obviously, such increases in mesh size would have to be in tandem with other management measures designed to ensure the sustainability of China's marine fisheries resources.  相似文献
