Recent contest experience can influence an individual’s behaviour in subsequent contests. When the probability of winning a subsequent contest is used to quantify experience effects, a loser effect usually lasts longer than a winner effect. This conclusion, however, may be caused by this probability understating the persistence of the influence of a winning experience on contest decisions. Using Kryptolebias marmoratus, a mangrove killifish, as the study organism, we investigated whether different conclusions about the relative persistence of winning and losing experiences would be reached when different aspects of contest behaviour (probability of initiating attacks, probability of winning non‐escalated and escalated contests, escalation rate and contest duration) were measured. The results indicated that the apparent persistence of the effect of winning or losing experiences varied with the behaviour studied. When the likelihood to initiate attacks was used, no winner effect was detected while the loser effect lasted for <1 d. When escalation rate was used, the winner effect lasted for 2–4 d, while the loser effect lasted for 1–2 d. When the probability of winning non‐escalated contests was used, the winner effect was detectable for <1 d, while the loser effect lasted for 2–4 d. And, when contest duration was used, the winner effect was detectable for 2–4 d, but no loser effect was detectable. These results show that (1) the probability of winning a subsequent contest understated the persistence of the influence of a winning experience on the fish’s contest decisions, (2) the measures most effective at detecting winner effects are different from those most effective at detecting loser effects and (3) in K. marmoratus, both effects can be detected 2 d after the completion of experience training but both dissipate in 4 d.  相似文献

Animals winning an agonistic encounter are more likely to win their next encounter while losers are less likely, even when controlling for motivation and physical size. Do these winner and loser effects exist in human competitions? Drawing on a large database of professional tennis matches, we were able to control for players' ability and thereby test for winner and loser effects. We narrowed the database to matches between players who on average did not differ significantly in rank, and further to matches in which the first set was fought to a long tie-break. These closely fought matches present a natural experiment because players are assigned to treatment conditions – winning or losing a set – despite similar ability and performance. We found that among men, the winner of a closely fought tie-break had an approximate 60% chance of winning the second set, the loser a 40% chance. These effects did not exist among women, a finding consistent with the hypothesis that androgens mediate winner and loser effects. Our results may help in the design of competitions in sport as well as in work environments, where it may prove useful to either encourage winner effects or to attenuate their occasional adverse consequences.  相似文献

目的探讨翻白草对高血脂大鼠和家兔的降血脂作用。方法采用Wistar大鼠60只(其中50只为高脂饲料诱导成高血脂动物模型,10只为空白对照组),家兔36只(其中30只为高脂饲料诱导成高血脂动物模型,6只为空白对照组)。随机分为6组(翻白草大、中、小3个剂量组,模型组,脂必妥对照组,空白对照组)。连续给药6周,分别于给药后第4周、第6周采血,检测血清中胆固醇(TC)、甘油三脂(TG)及低密度脂蛋白(LDL)浓度。结果翻白草各给药组与模型组比较,给药后第4周,翻白草可降低高血脂大鼠和家兔血清中TC、TG、LDL的含量(P〈0.05);给药后第6周,可显著降低高血脂大鼠和家兔血清中TC、TG、LDL的含量(P〈0.01)。结论翻白草具有很好的降血脂作用。  相似文献

Therapeutic and/or preventive interventions using phytochemical constituents for ischemic heart disease have gained considerable attention worldwide, mainly due to their antioxidant activity. This study investigated the cardioprotective effect and possible mechanism of juglone, a major constituent of the walnut tree, using an isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial infarction (MI) model in rats. Rats were pretreated for five (5) days with juglone (1, 3 mg/kg, i.p) and atenolol (1 mg/kg, i.p) in separate experiments before inducing myocardial injury by administration of ISO (80 mg/kg, s.c) at an interval of 24 h for 2 consecutive days (4th and 5th day). The cardioprotective effect of juglone was confirmed through a lead II electrocardiograph (ECG), cardiac biomarkers (cTnI, CPK, CK-MB, LDH, ALT and AST) and histopathological study. The results of our present study suggest that prior administration of juglone (1 and 3 mg/kg) proved to be effective as a cardioprotective therapeutic agent in reducing the extent of myocardial damage (induced by ISO) by fortifying the myocardial cell membrane, preventing elevated T-waves, deep Q-waves in the ECG, heart to body weight ratio, infarction and also by normalizing cardiac marker enzymes (cTnI, CPK, CK-MB, LDH, ALT and AST) and histopathological changes, such as inflammation, edema and necrosis. In conclusion, this study has identified phytochemical constituents, in particular juglone, as a potential cardioprotective agent.  相似文献

In the literature on dominance hierarchies, "winner" and "loser"effects usually are denned as an increased probability of winningat time T, bated on victories at time T-l, T-2, etc, and anincreased probability of losing at time T, based on losing atT-1, T-2, etc., respectively. Despite some early theoreticalwork on winner and loser effects, these factors and how theyaffect the structure of dominance hierarchies have not beenexamined in detail. I developed a computer simulation to examinewinner and loser effects when such effects are independent ofone another (as well as when they interact) and when combatantsassess each other's resource-holding power. When winner effectsalone were important, a hierarchy in which all individuals heldan unambiguous rank was found. When only loser effects wereimportant, a dear alpha individual always emerged, but the rankof others in the group was often unclear because of the scarcityof aggressive interactions. Increasing winner effects for agiven value of the loser effect increase the number of individualswith unambiguous positions in a hierarchy and the converse istrue for increasing the value of the loser effect for a givenwinner effect Although winner and loser effects have been documentedin a number of species, no study has documented both winnerand loser effects (using some controlled, pairwise testing system)and the detailed nature of behavioral interactions when individualsare in groups. Manufacturing processes for plasma derivatives are in general highly effective for removal or inactivation of enveloped viruses and the products are safe with regard to the clinically important viruses HIV, HCV and HBV. They are not so effective for the elimination for non-enveloped viruses, especially Parvovirus B19 (B19). A certain risk remains of B19 contamination for some plasma derivatives that is caused, firstly, by the occurrence of highly contaminated donations (up to 10(14)genomes/ml) and secondly, by the extreme heat resistance and small size of B19 which makes it difficult to remove or inactivate. NAT is a beneficial tool for detection of virus contamination. It is routinely used for the detection of HCV-RNA in plasma pools, thereby preventing the processing of HCV-RNA positive material. NAT assays may also be valuable for testing the removal of viruses during manufacturing. This may be especially important if a virus cannot be tested by infectivity assays.  相似文献

A compound was isolated in crystal form from an extract of Gymnema sylvestre dried leaves. The compound was identified to be conduritol A by chemical methods, and the physicochemical characteristics also coincided with the data in the literature. Conduritol A was tested for its effect on intestinal glucose absorption orglcose tolerance in rats. The results show that the absorption of glucose in vitro was completely inhibited in the presence of 0.2 mg/ml of conduritol A and that the blood sugar level was effectively depressed by administering conduritol A at 10mg/kg of rat body weight  相似文献

The autophagic degradation pathway is a powerful tool in the host cell arsenal against cytosolic pathogens. Contents trapped inside cytosolic vesicles, termed autophagosomes, are delivered to the lysosome for degradation. In spite of the degradative nature of the pathway, some pathogens are able to subvert autophagy for their benefit. In many cases, these pathogens have developed strategies to induce the autophagic signaling pathway while inhibiting the associated degradation activity. One surprising finding from recent literature is that some viruses do not impede degradation but instead promote the generation of degradative autolysosomes, which are the endpoint compartments of autophagy. Dengue virus, poliovirus, and hepatitis C virus, all positive-strand RNA viruses, utilize the maturation of autophagosomes into acidic and ultimately degradative compartments to promote their replication. While the benefits that each virus reaps from autophagosome maturation are unique, the parallels between the viruses indicate a complex relationship between cytosolic viruses and host cell degradation vesicles.  相似文献

Sunitinib is a multitargeted kinase inhibitor that inhibits many receptor tyrosine kinases and has been used in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, metastatic renal cell carcinoma, and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. In this study, the effects of sunitinib given to rats, both alone and after stress with cisplatin, were investigated. The animals were divided into four groups – (1) control group (C) administered interperitoneally with a single dose 0.9 % saline, (2) Cis group administered a single dose (7 mg/kg) of cisplatin, (3) Sun group administered 10 mg/kg sunitinib for seven days, and (4) Cis+Sun group administered 10 mg/kg sunitinib for seven days after a single dose (7 mg/kg) of cisplatin. After these applications, the rats were sacrificed, and blood and tissue samples were taken for biochemical and histopathological evaluations. Sunitinib did not show any effect on urea, creatine, and kidney IL1β and TGF-β3 expression levels when administered alone; it increased ALT, AST, and IL-38 levels. When sunitinib was given to the cisplatin-induced rats, it was observed that the increase in ALT, AST, and IL-38 levels increased more than the rats that was given only sunitinib. According to the data obtained, sunitinib does not cause a significant change in kidney tissue under both normal and stress conditions, while it creates stress in liver tissue. In addition, its toxicity in the liver becomes more certain as a result of its combination with cisplatin.  相似文献

We investigated aspects of resistance to entomopathogenic fungi in the social insect Solenopsis invicta, the red imported fire ant (RIFA). RIFA reared individually were significantly more susceptible to the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae M09 than reared in groups. Fungus exposed ants performed more self-grooming behavior when isolated as individuals and received more allo-grooming when accompanied with four healthy nestmates. Using fluorescence microscopy, we counted the number of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled conidia on the cuticle of fungus exposed ants reared individually or as groups. The number of conidia on the surface of grouped ants decreased more rapidly than on isolated individuals. Allo-grooming behavior appears to be important in removing the conidia on the surface of RIFA. Individuals help fungus exposed ants by performing intensive grooming behaviors, which either risk infecting themselves or get them immunized as social immunity. We show evidence that contacting with fungus exposed ants would decrease susceptibility of nestmates to the fungus. All these results indicate that RIFA benefit from grooming behavior to fight against the fungal pathogens. Future advances in biological control of RIFA with entomopathogenic fungi are also discussed.  相似文献

The absorption and excretion of melanoidins, a mixture of the low- and high-molecular weight components (LMM and HMM), and the LMM component prepared from a l-lysine^d-glucose system, at pH 7.4 and 9.0, respectively, and the effects of these melanoidins on cholesterol metabolism were examined in rats. Weanling male rats of the Wistar strain weighing about 50 g were fed diets containing 10% casein (10C) with 3% of a melanoidin or 25% casein (25C) with 4% of the melanoidin for 12 weeks, and the 25C diet including 3% of the melanoidin or LMM for 8 weeks. The growth and organ weights of the melanoidin-supplied groups were not different from those of the control ones. In rats given the melanoidin diets with both protein levels, the kidneys became dark brownish due to the accumulation of the melanoidin, though the accumulated amount was extremely small (nearly 0.5 mg/g wet kidney), and gel filtration chromatography of a water extract of the kidneys on Sephadex G-75 showed that the deposited melanoidin was the LMM component. Most of the ingested melanoidin, however, was excreted in the feces, and on comparison of the gel chromatographic patterns, the melanoidin groups were found to have more fecal LMM than the control ones. When rats were provided with LMM, HMM increased in their feces. The addition of melanoidin suppressed the level of plasma total cholesterol and elevated the fecal excretion of total lipids and total cholesterol. The urinary contents of protein and total creatinine did not differ from those in the control groups.  相似文献

Background ­— The present study was conducted to investigate the chemopreventive effects of garlic extract and silymarin on N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity in male albino rats. Methods and Results — Animals were pretreated with garlic, silymarin or both for one week prior to the injection of NDEA. Then animals received a single injection of NDEA followed by weekly subcutaneous injections of CCl4 for 6 weeks. Oral administration was then continued along with the injection of CCl4 for the duration of the experiment. Serum aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), hepatic lipid peroxidation (LPO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GSR) were measured. Injection of NDEA induced a significant elevation in serum AST, ALT and ALP. In the liver, NDEA increased oxidative stress through the increase in LPO and decrease in SOD, and GSH-dependent enzymes. Although administration of garlic or silymarin significantly reduced the liver toxicity, combined administration was more effective in preventing the development of hepatotoxicity. Conclusion — These novel findings suggest that silymarin and garlic have a synergistic effect, and could be used as hepatoprotective agents against hepatotoxicity.  相似文献

The effects of soybean oil (SOO, control), soybean lecithin (SOL), and of sterylglycocides (STG) and phospholipids (PL) fractionated from SOL on lipid indices in the plasma, liver, and feces were examined for male Wistar rats fed with diets containing these lipids for 3 weeks. The body weight gain and liver weight decreased or tended to be reduced in the animals given the diet containing a 5% STG mixture (STGM) compared with the values in the other dietary groups. The plasma lipid concentration in general declined in the rats fed with the diets supplemented with 5% SOL, STGM, or the PL mixture (PLM), and with 1% of STGM, acylated STG (ASTG), or non-acylated STG (NSTG). The triacylglycerol level was significantly depressed in the rats fed with the diets including 1 or 5% of STGM, ASTG, or NSTG when compared to the level of the SOO—fed animals. The total cholesterol and triacylglycerol contents in the liver were lower in the rats provided with the diets containing 5% of SOL, PC, or PLM than in the SOO- or STGM-diet-fed animals. The rats given the diets supplemented with 1 or 5% of STGM, ASTG, or NSTG had a decreased content of liver triacylglycerol compared with the content of the SOO—fed animals. The amounts of total lipids and total cholesterol excreted into the feces were higher in the rats fed with the diets supplemented with 5% SOL, or with 1% of STGM, ASTG, or NSTG, or especially with 5% STGM than in the SOO—fed animals. The present results suggest that STG suppressed the absorption of cholesterol and fatty acids in the intestines.  相似文献
