Diploneis species have perhaps the most complex valve structure among pennate diatoms. The development of this structure was studied in Diploneis smithii and begins with the formation of a primary band, which then develops secondary arms at both poles and the center, as in the classic Chiappino–Volcani model of raphid diatom ontogeny. Spine‐like projections grow out from the primary band and secondary arms to establish the transapical ribs (virgae) of the mature valve and themselves develop spines, which are spaced first oppositely and then alternately and fuse with each other to delimit the stria pores. Subsequently, new pattern and structures develop both externally (formation of bifurcating projections that fuse to delimit the outer, sieve‐like layer of the valve) and internally (growth and fusion of flanges from the first‐formed ribs to create the longitudinal canals and deposition of a hymenate strip over the internal face of each stria). Comparisons are made with morphogenesis in other diatoms. Diploneis smithii ontogeny suggests how very slight developmental changes might have created the very variable external morphology of Diploneis species. It also indicates that the longitudinal canals of Diploneis and Fallacia have different origins, since the porous external wall is not formed as a unilaterally attached flap in Diploneis and the canal is internal to the first‐formed rib–stria system in Diploneis, but external to it in Fallacia. 相似文献

We report on auxospore wall structure and development in the araphid pennate diatom Tabularia fasciculata. Similar to most other pennates, these auxospores showed a typical bidirectional elongation, but unexpectedly bore no transverse perizonium, and with no detectable silicon during much of their expansion. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses segregated auxospores into two types: (1) those containing no detectable silicon and (2) those with measureable amounts. Both types were of similar size. Silica precipitation began throughout the auxospore at or near maximal length, but initially was detectable in isolated regions throughout the structure. Following this initial condition, silicon was consistently detectable throughout auxospores of comparable size and corresponded to deposition of longitudinal perizonium (visible through the thin organic outer layer of the wall in some auxospores), followed by the deposition of the initial valves. Our results raise the question as to how the tubular shape of bidirectionally expanding auxospores up to ∼90 μm long is maintained in the absence of transverse siliceous elements restricting isodiametric expansion of the cell, which are present in all other known pennate auxospores and all but one other diatom. A marine araphid pennate diatom Plagiostriata goreensis is described from the sand grains of Goree Island, Dakar, Republic of Senegal, based on observations of fine structure of its frustule. The most striking feature of the species is its striation, which is angled at approximately 60° across the robust sternum. The other defining features of the species are its one highly reduced rimoportula and apical pores located at both ends of the valve margin. In the 18S rDNA phylogeny, the species appears as a member of a ‘small‐celled clade’ of araphid pennate diatoms that consist of Nanofrustulum, Opephora and Staurosira. The results of the phylogenetic analyses suggest that the distinct characters of the diatom; namely, oblique striae and apical pores, may have been acquired independently. However, it remains unclear whether the rimoportula of P. goreensis is a reduced state or P. goreensis acquired its morphologically curious rimoportula independently after the loss of an ancient rimoportula at the root of the small‐celled clade. 相似文献

Morphology and molecular phylogeny of epizoic araphid diatoms on marine zooplankton,including Pseudofalcula hyalina gen. & comb. nov. (Fragilariophyceae,Bacillariophyta) 下载免费PDF全文
Some diatoms are able to colonize as epibionts on their potential zooplankton predators. Here, we report Pseudohimantidium pacificum living on the copepod Corycaeus giesbrechti and as a new finding on Oithona nana, Protoraphis atlantica living on the copepod Pontellopsis brevis, Protoraphis hustedtiana on the cypris larvae of barnacles, and Falcula hyalina on the copepod Acartia lilljeborgii. The epizoic diatoms were able to grow as free‐living forms under culture conditions. Pseudohimantidium pacificum and P. atlantica appeared as the most derived species from their benthic diatom ancestors. The mucilage pad or stalk of the strains of these species showed important morphological distinction when compared with their epizoic forms. Barnacle larvae explore benthic habitats before settlement, and epibiosis on them is an example where P. hustedtiana profits from the host behavior for dispersal of its benthic populations. Molecular phylogenies based on the SSU rRNA and RuBisCO large subunit (rbcL) gene sequences revealed F. hyalina as an independent lineage within the Fragilariales (Tabularia, Catacombas, and others), consistent with its morphological distinction in the low number of rows (≤6) in the ocellulimbus, among other features. We propose the transfer of F. hyalina to the genus Pseudofalcula gen. nov. Molecular phylogeny suggests a single order for the members of the Cyclophorales and the Protoraphidales, and that the epibioses of araphid diatoms on marine zooplankton have been independently acquired several times. These clades are constituted of both epizoic and epiphytic/epilithic forms that evidence a recent acquisition of the epizoic modus vivendi. 相似文献

A new species of Cocconeis has been found growing on the green seaweed Caulerpa racemosa (Forsskål) J. Agardh var. laete‐virens (Montagne) Weber van Bosse from Shikine Island in the Izu Islands on the Pacific coast of Japan; we propose the name Cocconeis shiki‐nensis Hid. Suzuki and describe the species by light microscopy (LM) and electron microscopy (EM). This taxon was also collected from the plastic plates used for rearing in seed production systems of the abalone Nordotis discus hannai Ino and the horned turban Turbo cornutus Solander in the Toyama Prefectural Fisheries Research Institute facing the Sea of Japan. The main morphological features of C. shikinensis are as follows. The valves are elliptic. The valve face of the raphid valve (RV) is slightly concave and that of the araphid valve (AV) is complementary to the RV and convex. The single plastid is flat, C‐shaped and elaborately lobed. The raphe on the RV is straight. The each terminal area expands to both sides along the valve margin, forming an arrowhead‐shaped, thickened hyaline area. The striae consist of small, round areolae and are radiate and uniseriate. On the AV, the striae consist of several alveoli. Each alveolus opens internally by means of a circular foramen. The valvocopula of each valve is fimbriate and open. The cingulum attached to the AV consists of three girdle bands; a valvocopula and two bands (copula and pleura), which are open and have ligulae. The relationship between C. shikinensis and similar members of the genus Cocconeis is discussed. 相似文献

We describe a new genus and species of the diatom family Stephanodiscaceae with light and scanning electron microscopy from Libo Small Hole, Libo County, Guizhou Province, China. Edtheriotia guizhoiana gen. & sp. nov. has striae across the valve face of varying lengths, and are composed of fine striae towards the margin and onto the mantle. Many round to stellate siliceous nodules cover the exterior of the valve. External fultoportulae opening are short tubes; the opening of the rimportula lacks a tube. Internally a hyaline rim is positioned near the margin. Marginal fultoportulae possess two arcuate opercles. Areolae have domed cribra on the valve face. Those near the margin do not open to the interior. One to three sessile to slightly‐raised rimportulae are placed on the valve face towards the margin; they do not terminate shortened striae towards the center of the valve. This suite of features distinguishes this group from other known genera in the Stephanodicaeae. Cyclotella shanxiensis is transferred to Edtheriotia, making the new combination E. shanxiensis (Xie & Qi) Kociolek et al. comb. nov. It differs from E. guizhoiana by the presence of open pores near the margin of the valve. Features of the new genus are compared and contrasted with others in the Family Stephanodiscaceae. The two species of the genus, unlike most in the family, are known only from rivers and ponds from China and Japan. 相似文献

Coscinodiscus wailesii Gran et Angst is a large centric diatom (280–500 μm diameter) from marine phytoplankton, characterized by a cylindrical frustule with flat valvar surface, two marginal rings of rimoportulae on the mantle, and two macrorimoportulae. Cells from cultured and natural populations collected in Paranaguá Bay, Paraná, southern Brazil were observed under light and scanning electron microscopes to verify the populations’ correct identity and morphology. In both populations, a typical central rosette or a hyaline area was found in the valvar center. The species’ distribution in Brazilian waters was revised, and a discussion on possible vectors of transport was made. Blooms of the species occur sporadically in the coast of Paraná, seeming to affect the local trophic chain. 相似文献

The worldwide distributed house mouse, Mus musculus, is subdivided into at least three lineages, Mus musculus musculus, Mus musculus domesticus, and Mus musculus castaneus. The subspecies occur parapatrically in a region considered to be the cradle of the species in Southern Asia (‘central region’), as well as in the rest of the world (‘peripheral region’). The morphological evolution of this species in a phylogeographical context is studied using a landmark‐based approach on mandible morphology of different populations of the three lineages. The morphological variation increases from central to peripheral regions at the population and subspecific levels, confirming a centrifugal sub‐speciation within this species. Furthermore, the outgroup comparison with sister species suggests that M. musculus musculus and populations of all subspecies inhabiting the Iranian plateau have retained a more ancestral mandible morphology, suggesting that this region may represent one of the relevant places of the origin of the species. Mus musculus castaneus, both from central and peripheral regions, is morphologically the most variable and divergent subspecies. The Clinus superciliosus complex comprises six closely related species. Three of the species were originally recognized by Gilchrist and Thompson as two distinct species, Clinus superciliosus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Clinus ornatus Gilchrist & Thompson, 1908, and a variety, Clinus superciliosus var. arborescens Gilchrist & Thompson, 1908. A number of other authors described various similar species, which subsequently were all synonymized with Clinus superciliosus. A further species, Clinus spatulatus Bennett, 1983, an obligate estuarine dweller, is known only from the Bot, Kleinmond, and Klein river estuaries in the Western Cape, South Africa. Two further species, Clinus musaicus sp. nov. (discovered while searching for C. ornatus specimens) and Clinus exasperatus sp. nov. , are herein described: the first is currently known from False Bay and the west coast of the Cape Peninsula, whereas the second species is known from only two specimens just east of False Bay. Clinus ornatus and Clinus arborescens Gilchrist & Thompson, 1908 are recognized as a valid species, and can be distinguished from C. superciliosus and C. spatulatus on the basis of meristic values, form of the orbital cirrus, position of the dorsal‐fin crest, taste bud number and pattern, diet, and coloration. All extant types of C. superciliosus are examined as specimens, or photographs and radiographs, and their validity and identification are assessed. Genetic analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA supports species differentiation. A key is provided for the species complex. Due to limited morphological differentiation, diatoms can be very difficult to identify and cryptic speciation is widespread. There is a need for a narrower species concept if contentious issues such as diatom biodiversities and biogeographies are to be resolved. We assessed the effectiveness of several genes (cox1, rbcL, 18S and ITS rDNA) to distinguish cryptic species within the model 'morphospecies', Sellaphora pupula agg. This is the first time that the suitability of cox1 as an identification tool for diatoms has been assessed. A range of cox1 primers was tested on Sellaphora and various outgroup taxa. Sequences were obtained for 34 isolates belonging to 22 Sellaphora taxa and three others (Pinnularia, Eunotia and Tabularia). Intraspecific divergences ranged from 0 to 5bp (=0.8%) and interspecific levels were at least 18bp (=c. 3%). Cox1 divergence was usually much greater than rbcL divergence and always much more variable than 18S rDNA. ITS rDNA sequences were more variable than cox1, but well-known problems concerning intragenomic variability caution against its use in identification. More information and less sequencing effort mean that cox1 can be a very useful aid in diatom identification. The usefulness of cox1 for determining phylogenetic relationships among Sellaphora species was also assessed and compared to rbcL. Tree topologies were very similar, although support values were generally lower for cox1. 相似文献

Analyses of the mitochondrial cox1, the nuclear‐encoded large subunit (LSU), and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) RNA coding region of Pseudo‐nitzschia revealed that the P. pseudodelicatissima complex can be phylogenetically grouped into three distinct clades (Groups I–III), while the P. delicatissima complex forms another distinct clade (Group IV) in both the LSU and ITS2 phylogenetic trees. It was elucidated that comprehensive taxon sampling (sampling of sequences), selection of appropriate target genes and outgroup, and alignment strategies influenced the phylogenetic accuracy. Based on the genetic divergence, ITS2 resulted in the most resolved trees, followed by cox1 and LSU. The morphological characters available for Pseudo‐nitzschia, although limited in number, were overall in agreement with the phylogenies when mapped onto the ITS2 tree. Information on the presence/absence of a central nodule, number of rows of poroids in each stria, and of sectors dividing the poroids mapped onto the ITS2 tree revealed the evolution of the recently diverged species. The morphologically based species complexes showed evolutionary relevance in agreement with molecular phylogeny inferred from ITS2 sequence–structure data. The data set of the hypervariable region of ITS2 improved the phylogenetic inference compared to the cox1 and LSU data sets. The taxonomic status of P. cuspidata and P. pseudodelicatissima requires further elucidation. 相似文献

Hybridisation is considered an important evolutionary phenomenon in Gnaphalieae, but contemporary hybridisation has been little explored within the tribe. Here, hybridisation between Helichrysum orientale and Helichrysum stoechas is studied at two different localities in the islands of Crete and Rhodes (Greece). Using three different types of molecular data (AFLP, nrDNA ITS sequences and cpDNA ndhF sequences) and morphological data, the aim is to provide simultaneous and direct comparisons between molecular and morphological variation among the parental species and the studied hybrid populations. AFLP profiles, ITS sequences and morphological data support the existence of hybrids at the two localities studied, shown as morphological and genetic intermediates between the parental species. Chloroplast DNA sequences show that both parental species can act either as pollen donor or as maternal parent. Fertility of hybrids is demonstrated by the viability of seeds produced by hybrids from both localities, and the detection of a backcross specimen to H. orientale. Although there is general congruence of morphological and molecular data, the analysis of morphology and ITS sequences can fail to detect backcross hybrids. 相似文献

Separating genetic and environmental causes of the latitudinal differences among populations is crucial when evaluating the potential for microevolutionary responses to the changing environment. We studied among‐population and environmental components of variation in several life‐history traits of a lichen‐feeding moth Eilema depressum when offspring of replicate Swiss and Finnish females were reared in a common‐garden factorial experiment. A partial second generation was produced only among Swiss larvae, more likely so at higher temperature regime and higher host quality, and more frequently among the offspring of particular females. Growth rates of larvae that chose the diapause development were higher in northern individuals. Our results thus reveal adaptive differences between latitudinal populations in studied life‐history traits, allowing to expect rapid adaptation of the species to further environmental changes. In contrast, invariable responses of the growth rates of the larvae to temperature and host quality support the idea that some basic parameters of insect growth show a high degree of evolutionary conservatism. 相似文献

We studied the variability of in vivo absorption coefficients and PSII‐scaled fluorescence excitation (fl‐ex) spectra of high light (HL) and low light (LL) acclimated cultures of 33 phytoplankton species that belonged to 13 different pigment groups (PGs) and 10 different phytoplankton classes. By scaling fl‐ex spectra to the corresponding absorption spectra by matching them in the 540–650 nm range, we obtained estimates for the fraction of total chl a that resided in PSII, the absorption of light by PSII, PSI, and photoprotective carotenoids. The in vivo red peak absorption maxima ranged from 673 to 679 nm, reflecting bonding of chl a to different pigment proteins. A simple approach is presented for quantifying intracellular self‐shading and evaluating the impact of photoacclimation on biooptical characteristics of the different PGs examined. In view of these results, parameters used in the calculation of oxygenic photosynthesis based on pulse‐amplitude‐modulated (PAM) and fast‐repetition‐rate (FRR) fluorometers are discussed, showing that the ratio between light available to PSII and total absorption, essential for the calculation of the oxygen release rate (using the PSII‐scaled fluorescence spectrum as a proxy) was dependent on species and photoacclimation state. Three subgroups of chromophytes exhibited 70%–80%, 60%–80%, and 50%–60% chl a in PSII‐LHCII; the two subgroups of chlorophytes, 70% or 80%; and cyanobacteria, only 12%. In contrast, the mean fraction for chromo‐ and chlorophytes of quanta absorbed by PSII was 73% in LL‐ and 55% in HL‐acclimated cells; thus, the corresponding ratios 0.55 and 0.73 might be used as correction factors adjusting for quanta absorbed by PSII for PAM and FRR measurements. 相似文献

The males of four species of the Asian frog genus Limnonectes [Limnonectes dabanus (Smith, 1922a), Limnonectes gyldenstolpei (Andersson, 1916), Limnonectes macrognathus (Boulenger, 1917), and Limnonectes plicatellus (Stoliczka, 1873)] exhibit remarkable ornamentation in the form of a swollen, or cap‐like, structure (caruncle) on the top of their heads. These caruncles vary in their appearance among species, and neither their function nor their actual systematic value is known. We compared their anatomy via dissections, morphometrics, radiography, and histology, and analysed the available mitochondrial DNA sequences as well as new data to place these species within the context of a larger phylogenetic hypothesis for Limnonectes. Despite the externally different morphology, the underlying histological structure is virtually identical. Beneath skin that is densely packed with mucous glands lies a pad of connective tissue overlaying the parietal bone. The actual function of the caruncle, however, remains enigmatic. In addition to the presence of the caruncle, independent evidence from osteological characters and molecular data support the monophyly of a clade comprising of L. dabanus, L. gyldenstolpei, L. macrognathus, and L. plicatellus. The caruncles are therefore interpreted as a robust autapomorphy for this clade, and suggest that the subgenus Elachyglossa should be restricted to the four species in question. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London 相似文献

The Upper Guinean Forests of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia contain high levels of freshwater biodiversity. The Guinean Range and associated Fouta Djallon highlands separate two biogeographical provinces in the region and served as a refugium during past climatic fluctuations. While many species of freshwater fishes are restricted to one biogeographical province or the other, some are reported to occur on both sides of the divide. Here, we examine the molecular and morphological diversity of an endemic small African barb, Enteromius foutensis, reported to occur in both provinces. This integrative analysis revealed unrecognized diversity and suggests recent, or ongoing, events that facilitated geodispersal and subsequent divergence in the region. The molecular analysis revealed three divergent and well‐supported populations within E. foutensis. Accounting for allometric shape variation allowed us to observe diagnostic morphological differences among the populations. Enteromius foutensis sensu stricto is restricted to the Little Scarcies drainage in Guinea and northern Sierra Leone. Our study revealed two candidate species distinct from E. foutensis. One is likely a narrow endemic restricted to a small area in the Konkouré River basin; the other candidate species inhabits the upper Senegal and Gambie River drainages. How these patterns of diversity compare with other freshwater species from the Fouta Djallon highlands and the conservation status of these candidate species are also discussed. 相似文献

Despite the recent advancements in recognizing diversity in lichen‐forming fungi, assessing the timing of diversification remains largely unexplored in these important fungal symbionts. To better understand the evolutionary processes driving diversification in common lichen‐forming fungi, we investigated the phylogeny and biogeography of the broadly distributed Melanelixia fuliginosa/M. glabratula group, using molecular data from six nuclear markers. Phylogenetic analyses of individual gene alignments and combined data provide strong evidence for five species‐level lineages within this species complex. Three of these lineages correspond to the previously described species M. fuliginosa, M. glabratula, and M. subaurifera. The remaining two lineages, ‘M. sp. 1’ and ‘M. sp. 2’, merit species recognition based on genealogical concordance. Both M. glabratula and M. subaurifera had broad intercontinental distributions, sharing identical haplotypes among intercontinental populations. Based on the current sampling, M. fuliginosa s.s. was represented exclusively by European material and was not collected in North America. ‘M. sp. 1’ was represented by collections from Scotland and Spain; and ‘M. sp. 2’ was represented by collections in California, USA. Environmental factors driving the contrasting distribution patterns in this group remain unknown. Divergence times estimated using a coalescence‐based multilocus species‐tree approach suggest that diversification within the M. fuliginosa/M. glabratula group occurred exclusively during the Miocene. The results of the present study indicate that phenotypically cryptic lichen‐forming fungal species‐level lineages may be relatively ancient and do not necessarily reflect recent divergence events. 作者对贻贝科贝类的幼虫和幼贝期发育阶段形态结构的出现和变化顺序进行了研究,其约60个不同分类单元的个体发生可归纳为4种形态发生类型或模式。主要对3个形态发生区域的阶段形态结构的起源、发育变化和同源性做了研究。其一,即中央区域,开始形成于前双壳Ⅰ期(PD-Ⅰ),在某个分类单元它可以在前双壳Ⅱ期(PD-Ⅱ)和幼贝期(N)形成,而在其它分类单元则在前双壳Ⅱ期、幼贝期和双壳期(D)形成;第二区域,即背部后区,在幼贝期出现;第三区域,即背部前区,出现于双壳期。双壳期背部后区在某个分类单元起源于幼贝期的形态构造,在其它分类单元则可能起源于双壳期的形态构造。与在贻贝分类学上应用的成体特征相比,早期发育阶段中央和背部后区的形态结构显示出很明显的发育顺序或特征变化规律。根据以前人们熟知而尚未应用到分类和系统发育研究中的早期发育阶段形态特征,作者重新修订了Soot-Ryen的现生贻贝科种上阶元分类系统,重新提出了科内系统发育关系。修订的分类系统表明,Scarlato and Starobogatov(1984)提出的贻贝科各亚科由偏顶蛤亚科开始,沿4条系统发育路线演化发展,对应其早期发育阶段的4类形态发生类型或模式。 相似文献

The diatom genus Chaetoceros is one of the most abundant and diverse phytoplankton in marine and brackish waters worldwide. Within this genus, Chaetoceros socialis has been cited as one of the most common species. However, recent studies from different geographic areas have shown the presence of pseudo‐cryptic diversity within the C. socialis complex. Members of this complex are characterized by curved chains (primary colonies) aggregating into globular clusters, where one of the four setae of each cell curves toward the center of the cluster and the other three orient outwards. New light and electron microscopy observations as well as molecular data on marine planktonic diatoms from the coastal waters off Chile revealed the presence of two new species, Chaetoceros sporotruncatus sp. nov. and C. dichatoensis. sp. nov. belonging to the C. socialis complex. The two new species are similar to other members of the complex (i.e., C. socialis and C. gelidus) in the primary and secondary structure of the colony, the orientation pattern of the setae, and the valve ultrastructure. The only morphological characters that can be used to differentiate the species of this complex are aspects related to resting spore morphology. The two newly described species are closely related to each other and form a sister clade to C. gelidus in molecular phylogenies. We also provide a phylogenetic status along with the morphological characterization of C. radicans and C. cintus, which are genetically related to the C. socialis complex. 相似文献

Depending on geographical location, plants are exposed to variable amounts of UVB radiation and herbivore attack. Because the role(s) of UVB in the priming and/or accumulation of plant defence metabolites against herbivores are not well understood, we used field‐grown Nicotiana attenuata plants to explore the effects of UVB on herbivore performance. Consistent with previous reports, UVB‐exposed plants accumulated higher levels of ultraviolet (UV)‐absorbing compounds (rutin, chlorogenic acid, crypto‐chlorogenic acid and dicaffeoylspermidine). Furthermore, UVB increased the accumulation of jasmonic acid, jasmonoyl‐L‐isoleucine and abscisic acid, all phytohormones which regulate plant defence against biotic and abiotic stress. In herbivore bioassays, N. attenuata plants experimentally protected from UVB were more infested by mirids in three consecutive field seasons. Among defence metabolites measured, 17‐hydroxygeranyllinalool diterpene glycosides (HGL‐DTGs) showed strongly altered accumulation patterns. While constitutive HGL‐DTGs levels were higher under UVB, N. attenuata plants exposed to mirid bugs (Tupiocoris notatus) had still more HGL‐DTGs under UVB, and mirids preferred to feed on HGL‐DTGs‐silenced plants when other UVB protecting factors were eliminated by UVB filters. We conclude that UVB exposure not only stimulates UV protective screens but also affects plant defence mechanisms, such as HGL‐DTGs accumulation, and modulates ecological interactions of N. attenuata with its herbivores in nature. 相似文献
