It is known that the coffee (Coffea arabica L.) plant which is originally from shade habitats would have a limited ability to grow under full sun. Previous work has shown that nitrogen fertilisation can reduce the leaf damage when the plants are exposed to high light intensities during several days. In the present work we aimed to study the effects of the high irradiance during the first hours and evaluate the positive contribution of nitrogen fertilisation in the case of short-term exposure to strong light. Young plants (1.5–2 years old) grown in 1.5 kg of a mixed soil were supplemented with a nutrient solution containing 15 mM nitrogen in the form of NH4NO3, every 7 days (2N treatment), 15 days (1N treatment) and 45 days (0N treatment). Top mature leaves were exposed to a photosynthetic photon flux density of 1 500 μmol m?2 s?1 for a maximal period of 8 h, and changes in photosynthesis and pigment composition were monitored along the period of high light exposure. Photosynthetic capacity, leaf conductance to water vapour, electron transport capacity and maximum carboxylation activity, as well as some leaf fluorescence parameters (minimal fluorescence, photochemical efficiency of PSII and quantum yield of photosynthetic electron transport) were reduced by the stress, with a generally stronger impact observed in the 0N plants. The photochemical quenching was affected only in the 0N plants, while the non-photochemical quenching increased in 2N plants but decreased in the 0N ones. The results showed that 2N plants presented a better initial status of the photosynthetic parameters and of the content of photoprotective pigments. Those plants showed ability to trigger some protective mechanisms, as observed by the tendency to increase the xanthophyll pool content, specially in zeaxanthin and in non-photochemical quenching. Also, protein content presented a tendency to increase after 1.5 h, which was maintained until the end of the high light period. We conclude that nitrogen availability is a key factor in the acclimation process to high light. 相似文献

The sensitivity of kelps to elevated temperatures has been linked to recent declines in some kelp populations, with cascading impacts on marine communities. However, it remains unclear how thermal stress affects the ability of kelps to respond to other environmental factors, which could influence their vulnerability to climate change. We investigated the effect of thermal stress on the ability of the bull kelp Nereocystis luetkeana to acclimate to its surrounding hydrodynamic environment through tension-regulated plasticity in blade morphology. We first determined optimal and stressful temperatures for N. luetkeana by measuring growth over nine temperatures from 5°C to 22°C. We then exposed N. luetkeana blades to a factorial combination of temperature (13°C and 20°C) and tension (0.5 N and 2.0 N) simulating different flow conditions, and measured changes in blade length and width after 7 days. The temperature at which N. luetkeana exhibited maximum growth was estimated to be ~11.9°C, though growth was high over a relatively wide temperature range. When thermally stressed, N. luetkeana maintained morphological responses to simulated high flow, but were inhibited from acclimating to low flow, indicated by an inability of blades to widen. Our results suggest that N. luetkeana in sheltered habitats may be particularly vulnerable to climate warming, where an inability to adjust blade morphology to local hydrodynamic conditions could drive declines at sublethal levels of warming. As ecologically important foundation species, declines in sheltered kelp populations could result in major biodiversity loss and disrupt ecosystem function. 相似文献

Given the growing body of evidence on the general decline of kelp beds worldwide, it is crucial to understand the physiological responses of kelp gametophyte stages to environmental parameters. We investigated the physiological responses to light and temperature of gametophytes from two populations of Laminaria digitata in contrasting environments along the French coast of the English Channel. Gametophytes of both populations were highly tolerant of high light through an efficient down-regulation of photosynthesis triggered by the activation of the xanthophyll cycle. Temperature increases promoted photosynthesis and photosystem II showed high resistance to short-term exposure to high temperatures currently encountered in the field. Gametophytes from the two sites displayed some differences in their pigment content and photosynthetic characteristics, but low replication and difference in time of sampling precluded tests of potential local adaptation to the light conditions at each site, as observed in previously published results on adult sporophytes. Gametophytes of L. digitata appeared to be resistant to irradiation and temperature conditions currently experienced in the field, confirming their role in persistence of kelp species under stressful environmental conditions. 相似文献

Characterization of a rice mutant having an increased susceptibility to light stress at high temperature 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effect of light irradiation at high temperature was investigated in a rice mutant, spl-2 , which is sensitive to solar radiation. Dead spots appeared on the mutant leaves when cultured at a high temperature (40°C) under strong white-light illumination (15 W m−2 ). A similar damage was also observed in the wild-type leaves under the same conditions when the plants were preincubated in the dark for one day. Preillumination with weak light (6 W m−2 ) lessened the irradiation-induced damage in the wild-type. These observations suggest that in rice plants the acclimatization to weak light has a protective effect against strong irradiation at high temperature, and the spl-2 locus participates in the mechanisms of the acclimatization. The action spectrum for the irradiation-induced damage at the high temperature (40°C) in the spl-2 leaves indicated that the maximum damage occurred at around 480 nm and, in a lesser extent, at around 680 nm. Activity of the O− 2− and H2 O2− scavenging enzymes in the spl−2 leaves were almost the same or somewhat higher than those in the wild-type after irradiation with strong white light (15 W m−2 ) at 40°C, whereas the content of ascorbic acid in the spl−2 decreased significantly compared with the wild type. 相似文献

- The re‐composition of deforested environments requires the prior acclimation of seedlings to full sun in nurseries. Seedlings can overcome excess light either through the acclimation of pre‐existing fully expanded leaves or through the development of new leaves that are acclimated to the new light environment. Here, we compared the acclimation capacity of mature (MatL, fully expanded at the time of transfer) and newly expanded (NewL, expanded after the light shift) leaves of Guazuma ulmifolia Lam. (Malvaceae) seedlings to high light.
- The seedlings were initially grown under shade and then transferred to full sunlight. MatL and NewL were used for chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange analyses, pigment extraction and morpho‐anatomical measurements.
- After the transfer of seedlings to full sun, the MatL persisted and acclimated to some extent to the new light condition, since they underwent alterations in some morpho‐physiological traits and maintained a functional electron transport chain and positive net photosynthesis rate. However, long‐term exposure to high light led to chronic photoinhibition in MatL, which could be related to the limited plasticity of leaf morpho‐anatomical attributes. However, the NewL showed a high capacity to use the absorbed energy in photochemistry and dissipate excess energy harmlessly, attributes that were favoured by the high structural plasticity exhibited by these leaves.
- Both the maintenance of mature, photosynthetically active leaves and the production of new leaves with a high capacity to cope with excess energy were important for acclimation of G. ulmifolia seedlings.

Photosynthetic acclimation of phytoplankton to lower irradiation can be met by several strategies such as increasing the affinity for light or increasing antenna size and stacking of the thylakoids. The latter is reflected by a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Additionally, photosynthetic capacity (Pmax), respiratory losses, and proton leakage can be reduced under low light. Here we consider the effect of light intensity and phosphorus availability simultaneously on the photosynthetic acclimation and fatty acid composition of four phytoplankters. We studied representatives of the Chlorophyceae, Cryptophyceae and Mediophyceae, all of which are important components of plankton communities in temperate lakes. In our analysis, excluding fatty acid composition, we found different acclimation strategies in the chlorophytes Scenedesmus quadricauda, Chlamydomonas globosa, cryptophyte Cryptomonas ovata and ochrophyte Cyclotella meneghiniana. We observed interactive effects of light and phosphorus conditions on photosynthetic capacity in S. quadricauda and Cry. ovata. Cry. ovata can be characterized as a low light-acclimated species, whereas S. quadricauda and Cyc. meneghiniana can cope best with a combination of high light intensities and low phosphorus supply. Principal component analyses (PCA), including fatty acid composition, showed further species-specific patterns in their regulation of Pmax with PUFAs and light. In S. quadricauda and Cyc. meneghiniana, PUFAs negatively affected the relationship between Pmax and light. In Chl. globosa, lower light coincided with higher PUFAs and lower Pmax, but PCA also indicated that PUFAs had no direct influence on Pmax. PUFAs and Pmax were unaffected by light in Cry. ovata. We did not observe a general trend in the four species tested and concluded that, in particular, the interactive effects highlight the importance of taking into account more than one environmental factor when assessing photosynthetic acclimation to lower irradiation. 相似文献

Differences in the response of carbon assimilation to summer stress (water deficits, high light and temperature) in four Mediterranean tree species 总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12

Daily changes in photoprotective mechanisms were studied in sun leaves of Quercus suber L., Quercus ilex L., Olea europaea L. and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. trees during the summer in Portugal. Even though stomatal closure explained most of the diurnal variation in carbon assimilation along the summer, a decline in the photochemical yield of photosystem II (F'v/F'm) also occurred, as a result of an excess of intercepted solar radiation when carbon assimilation is limited by stomatal closure due to high vapour pressure deficits and/or soil water deficits. These changes were accompanied by the conversion of violaxanthin to antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin which were correlated with thermal dissipation of excess photon energy. In spite of a common general response, differences between species were observed Olea europaea , which is a slowgrowing tree, had the lowest net photosynthetic rates, the highest proportion of carotenoids in relation to chlorophyll and the highest rates of deepoxidation of violaxanthin. This enabled a large thermal dissipation of the excess intercepted radiation but led to rather small values of light utilisation for photochemistry (ca 20%). In contrast, in E. globulus , a fastgrowing tree, photosynthetic rates were the highest, thermal dissipation of absorbed radiation the lowest and maximal values of light utilisation for photochemistry reached ca 50%. The two Quercus species exhibited an intermediate response. A high degree of coordination is apparent between stomatal behaviour, photosynthetic capacity and photoprotection mechanisms. 相似文献

Photosynthetic acclimation to simultaneous and interacting environmental stresses along natural light gradients: optimality and constraints 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
There is a strong natural light gradient from the top to the bottom in plant canopies and along gap-understorey continua. Leaf structure and photosynthetic capacities change close to proportionally along these gradients, leading to maximisation of whole canopy photosynthesis. However, other environmental factors also vary within the light gradients in a correlative manner. Specifically, the leaves exposed to higher irradiance suffer from more severe heat, water, and photoinhibition stresses. Research in tree canopies and across gap-understorey gradients demonstrates that plants have a large potential to acclimate to interacting environmental limitations. The optimum temperature for photosynthetic electron transport increases with increasing growth irradiance in the canopy, improving the resistance of photosynthetic apparatus to heat stress. Stomatal constraints on photosynthesis are also larger at higher irradiance because the leaves at greater evaporative demands regulate water use more efficiently. Furthermore, upper canopy leaves are more rigid and have lower leaf osmotic potentials to improve water extraction from drying soil. The current review highlights that such an array of complex interactions significantly modifies the potential and realized whole canopy photosynthetic productivity, but also that the interactive effects cannot be simply predicted as composites of additive partial environmental stresses. We hypothesize that plant photosynthetic capacities deviate from the theoretical optimum values because of the interacting stresses in plant canopies and evolutionary trade-offs between leaf- and canopy-level plastic adjustments in light capture and use. 相似文献

A review is presented of the physiological mechanisms developed bybenthic macroalgae to cope with deleterious wavelengths, particularly UVradiation. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis, is a photoprotectivemechanism in various species studied in southern Spain. Incubations inoutdoor systems and transplantation experiments under natural radiationallowed to led to understanding of some the photoprotective strategies usedby red algae. Under conditions of enhanced UV-B radiation, algae inshallow sites show marked photoinhibition and rapid recovery ofphotosynthesis (dynamic photoinhibition), whereas algae from deeperlocations can suffer photodamage (chronic photoinhibition). Theexpression of this photoprotective strategy by intertidal species representsan efficient physiological adaptation to tolerate deleterious irradiance, whenlow tides coincide with the onset of solar radiation. Subtidal species canbe also exposed to high doses of UV radiation. This is particularly evidentin clear, Mediterranean waters, where light (including UV-B) can reach to10 m depth. The implications of photoacclimation processes formacroalgal ecology in warm-temperate littorals and the possibleconsequences for outdoor cultivation are outlined in terms of environmentalUV variability. 相似文献

Heating of the leaves of 15-day-old wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants at 42°C in the light (370 W/m2 PAR) suppressed their ability to fix CO2 twice stronger than heating in darkness. Heat hardening (3 h at 38–39°C) improved the tolerance of photosynthesis to combined action of high light and temperature but did not affect the tolerance to photoinhibition at 30°C. Hardening did not induce changes in the levels of photosynthetic pigments and their ratios. De-epoxidation of violaxanthin turned out to be more tolerant to photoinhibition at 42°C than CO2 fixation. Protective effect of hardening was not related to the accumulation of zeaxanthin and activation of the xanthophyll cycle. Hardening protected the most sensitive population of chloroplasts against heat-induced photodamage and simultaneously increased the number and length of thylakoids. An increase in the volume of the thylakoid system was also induced by heating at 42°C and exposure to high light at 30°C. The formation of additional thylakoids and grana of shade type was not associated with improved tolerance of photosynthesis to heat and light stresses. 相似文献

This study examined the effects of oxygen concentration, pond temperature and irradiance on productivity and CaCO(3) formation of the coccolith-forming alga, Pleurochrysis carterae CCMP647 grown in semi-continuous culture in outdoor raceway ponds. During the day the oxygen content of the pond increases markedly and P. carterae photosynthesis is inhibited by these high O(2) concentrations with the inhibition increasing with increasing temperature. The high irradiance outdoors presents less of a problem to photosynthesis and productivity as the algae can acclimate well to high irradiances over a period of several weeks. Pond depth also effects productivity and this effect varies with season. During autumn, productivities were highest at depths of 13 to 16 cm, and decreased when the depth was increased. During summer productivity was much lower at 13 cm pond depth and increased when the depth was increased to 16, 18 and 21 cm. Heating the ponds in the morning by approximately 3 to 5 degrees C improves productivity by 11%-21%, presumably because this allows the algae to photosynthesise faster in the conditions of low [O(2)] which occur in the early morning. 相似文献

The respective ratio of photosynthetically active to ultraviolet radiation is of crucial importance to results obtained in ultraviolet (UV)‐research on photoautotrophic organisms. Specimens of the green macroalga Ulva lactuca L. were exposed to a constant irradiance of UV‐radiation at increasing irradiances of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The effects of experimental irradiance and spectral composition on photoinhibition of photosynthesis and its recovery were monitored by chlorophyll fluorescence measurements and the activity of the xanthophyll cycle was assessed by high performance liquid chromatography‐(HPLC) based pigment analysis. Results indicate a UV‐induced delay in recovery from PAR‐induced photoinhibition and a deceleration of violaxanthin conversion within the xanthophyll cycle due to the presence of UV‐radiation. Also the concentration of the protective pigment lutein increased considerably and could be indicative of the existence of an additional light‐protective mechanism, as, for example, the lutein‐epoxid cycle in Ulva. In total, results clearly show that the extent of UV‐induced inhibition of photosynthesis to be found in UV‐exposure experiments is highly dependent on the irradiance of background photosynthetically active radiation: with increasing irradiance of PAR the UV‐effects were diminished. Exemplified by the green algae Ulva lactuca this study demonstrates the crucial importance of the ratios of PAR:UV applied in UV‐research, particularly when conducting laboratory experiments in an ecological context. 相似文献

Among three species, Gossypium hirsutum, Rhizophora mangle, and Monstera deliciosa, which were transferred from low to high growth PFD, only small decreases in the efficiency of photochemical energy conversion were observed in those plants which exhibited an increase in photosynthetic capacity. Leaves of plants which showed no increase in photosynthetic capacity experienced a continuous decrease in photochemical efficiency, accompanied by a more pronounced loss of chlorophyll than that observed in the former group. In all species marked increases in the xanthophyll/β-carotene ratio resulted from small increases in lutein, and several-fold increases in the sum of the three components of the xanthophyll cycle, zeaxanthin, antheraxanthin, and violaxanthin. A strong increase in the level of zeaxanthin was only partially matched by a decrease of violaxanthin to zero, and was further paralleled by a decrease in β-carotene. Antiparallel changes in the sum of zeaxanthin + antheraxanthin + violaxanthin and β-carotene between morning and evening were observed in all species. These diel changes were overlaid on a net increase in β-carotene as well as total carotenoid content in those plants in which photosynthetic capacity increased. In those, however, which exhibited no photosynthetic acclimation upon transfer to high light, a decrease in both β-carotene and total carotenoid content was observed. Rhizophora mangle grown at 100 % seawater exhibited a particularly high capacity for increasing the level of zeaxanthin in response to high light. 相似文献

A comparative analysis of the photosynthetic responses to temperature (10–30°C) was carried out under short‐term laboratory conditions by chlorophyll fluorescence and oxygen (02) evolution. Ten lotic macroalgal species from southeastern Brazil (20°11–20°48′S, 49°18–49°41′W) were tested, including Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta, Rhodophyta and Xanthophyta. Temperature had significant effects on electron transport rate (ETR) only for three species (Terpsinoe musica, Bacillariophyta; Cladophora glomerata, Chlorophyta; and C. coeruleus, Rhodophyta), with highest values at 25–30°C, whereas the remaining species had no significant responses. It also had similar effects on non‐photochemical quenching and ETR. Differences in net photosynthesisldark respiration ratios at distinct temperatures were found, with an increasing trend of respiration with higher temperatures. This implies in a decreasing balance between net primary production and temperature, representing more critical conditions toward higher temperatures for most species. In contrast, high net photosynthesis and photosynthesisldark respiration ratios at high and wide ranges of temperature were found in three species of green algae, suggesting that these algae can be important primary producers in lotic ecosystems, particularly in tropical regions. Optimal photosynthetic rates were observed under similar environmental temperatures for five species (two rhodophytes, two chlorophytes and one diatom) considering both techniques, suggesting acclimation to their respective ambient temperatures. C. coeruleus was the only species with peaks of ETR and 02 evolution under similar field‐measured temperatures. All species kept values of ETR and net photosynthesis close to the optimum under a broad range of temperatures. Increased non‐photochemical quenching, as a measure of thermal dissipation of excess energy, toward higher temperatures was observed in some species, as well as positive correlation of non‐photochemical quenching with ETR, and were interpreted as two mechanisms of adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus to temperature changes. Different optimal temperatures were found for individual species by each technique, generally under lower temperatures by 02 evolution, indicating dependence on distinct factors: increases in temperature generally induced higher ETR due to increased enzymatic activity, whereas increments of enzymatic activity were compensated by increased respiration and photorespiration leading to decreases in net photosynthesis. 相似文献

Photosynthetic performance and dark respiration rates were determined in situ for abundant macroalgae occurring between 27–49 m depths off Bermuda. Brown algae, particularly members of the order Dictyotales, predominated at all deep-water sites, and Stypopodium zonale was the most abundant species. Species showed net photosynthesis at very low ambient irradiances (<0.01 maximum Io). Lobophora variegata, a species with a highly decumbent growth form, had low productivity across all irradiances. In contrast, Dictyota spp. (D. bartayresii, D. dichotoma, D. divaricata) and S. zonale had high photosynthetic capacity (ca. 400 µmol O2 gdw–1 h–1), and light saturation was not evidenced at the highest ambient irradiance level (300 µE m–1 s–1) for species with thin, flat thalli. Light-harvesting pigment concentrations reflected tissue-nitrogen levels. C:N atom ratios, except for L. variegata and D. divaricata, were within the ratio for balanced growth. The repeated occurrence and photosynthetic efficiency of these Dictyotalean species in subtropical and tropical deep-water habitats emphasize their successful adaptation to low-light, nutrient-poor environments. 相似文献

A brief review of the photosynthetic apparatus of higher plants is given, followed by a consideration of the modifications induced in this apparatus by changes in light intensity and light quality. Possible strategies by which plants may optimize photosynthetic activity by both long- and short-term modifications of their photosynthetic apparatus in response to changing light regimes are discussed. 相似文献

Acclimation of tropical tree seedlings to excessive light in simulated tree-fall gaps 总被引:12,自引:1,他引:12

Acclimation to periodic high‐light stress was studied in tree seedlings from a neotropical forest. Seedlings of several pioneer and late‐succession species were cultivated under simulated tree‐fall gap conditions; they were placed under frames covered with shade cloth with apertures of different widths that permitted defined periods of daily leaf exposure to direct sunlight. During direct sun exposure, all plants exhibited a marked reversible decline in potential photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, determined by means of the ratio of variable to maximum Chl a fluorescence (Fv/Fm). The decline in Fv/Fm under full sunlight was much stronger in late‐succession than in pioneer species. For each gap size, all species exhibited a similar degree of de‐epoxidation of violaxanthin in direct sunlight and similar pool sizes of xanthophyll cycle pigments. Pool sizes increased with increasing gap size. Pioneer plants possessed high levels of β‐carotene that also increased with gap size, whereas α‐carotene decreased. In contrast to late‐succession plants, pioneer plants were capable of adjusting their Chl a/b ratio to a high value in wide gaps. The content of extractable UV‐B‐absorbing compounds was highest in the plants acclimated to large gaps and did not depend on the successional status of the plants. The results demonstrate a better performance of pioneer species under high‐light conditions as compared with late‐succession plants, manifested by reduced photoinhibition of PSII in pioneer species. This was not related to increased pool size and turnover of xanthophyll cycle pigments, nor to higher contents of UV‐B‐absorbing substances. High β‐carotene levels and increased Chl a/b ratios, i.e. reduced size of the Chl a and b binding antennae, may contribute to photoprotection in pioneer species. 相似文献

Chlorophyll fluorescence emission, pigment composition and photosynthetic rate of shade-grown cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants were measured immediately after suddenly exposing to full sunlight and at regular intervals there after within 15 d. Photoinhibition occurred in shade-grown cotton leaves immediately after exposed to full sunlight. The chlorophyll fluorescence parameter Fv / Fm and ΦPSⅡ , which reflect the efficiency of PSⅡ, obviously decreased in shade-grown leaves, much lower than that of the full sunlight-grown leaves. On the contrary, Fo value was sharply increased. Neither of these parameters could completely recover till next morning. The photoinhibition was chronic and continued for about 4 d, while the Fv / Fm and the net photosynthetic rate ( Pn ) continued to decline, then began to increase gradually 6 d later and turned stable after 10-12 d, appearing as an acclimation phenomenon. However, the final value of Fv / Fm and Pn did not reach the level as in those leaves grown in the full sunlight ever before. The final Pn was higher by 60% than that before exposure, but lower for more than 40% than that of the full sunlight-grown leaves. The most notable response of chloroplast pigment composition was a pronounced increase in the pool size of carotenoids in xanthophyll cycle over a period of 3 d. The results indicated that when shade-grown cotton seedlings were suddenly transferred to the full sunlight, the decline of Fv / Fm and Pn might associate with the damage of the PSⅡ reaction center. During the light acclimation, photoprotective mechanisms such as the xanthophyll cycle-dependent energy dissipation were increased, so that photodamage in leaves transferred from low to high light might be reduced. 相似文献

Growth and photosynthesis of two eucalypt species during high temperature stress under ambient and elevated [CO2 ] 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Two species of eucalypt (Eucalyptus macrorhyncha and E. rossii) were grown under conditions of high temperatures (45 °C, maximum) and high light (1500 μmol m?2 s?1, maximum) at either ambient (350 μL L?1) or elevated (700 μL L?1) CO2 concentrations for 8 weeks. The growth enhancement, in terms of total dry weight, was 41% and 103% for E. macrorhyncha and E. rossii, respectively, when grown in elevated [CO2]. A reduction in specific leaf area and increased concentrations of non-structural carbohydrates were observed for leaves grown in elevated [CO2]. Plants grown in elevated [CO2] had an overall increase in photosynthetic CO2 assimilation rate of 27%; however, when measured at the same CO2 concentration a down-regulation of photosynthesis was evident especially for E. macrorhyncha. During the midday period when temperatures and irradiances were maximal, photosynthetic efficiency as measured by chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was lower in E. macrorhyncha than in E. rossii. Furthermore, Fv/Fm was lower in leaves of E. macrorhyncha grown under elevated than under ambient [CO2]. These reductions in Fv/Fm were accompanied by increases in both photochemical (qP) and nonphotochemical quenching (qN and NPQ), and by increases in the concentrations of xanthophyll cycle pigments with an increased proportion of the total xanthophyll cycle pool comprising of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin. Thus, increased atmospheric [CO2] may enhance photoinhibition when environmental stresses such as high temperatures limit the capacity of a plant to respond with growth to elevated [CO2]. 相似文献
