Praealticus tanegasimae is a rockpool blenny that occurs around the higher edge of the intertidal zone in subtropical waters of the western Pacific. Terrestrial emergence from tide pools was confirmed in the blenny during daytime low tide periods on Kuchierabu-jima Island, southern Japan. They stayed in the pools, putting their heads above the water surface, and then jumped out with a tail flip. The duration for each terrestrial emergence ranged from 4 to 665 s (median 31 s), during which they never showed reproductive-related behaviors or active feeding behavior on land. The emergence behavior was often followed by hopping toward neighboring pools, and suggested that the goal of the behavior was to change pools for escape from unfavorable water conditions.  相似文献

Life history variation can often reflect differences in age-specific mortality within populations, with the general expectation that reproduction should be shifted away from ages experiencing increased mortality. Investigators of life history in vertebrates frequently focus on the impact of predation, but there is increasing evidence that predation may have unexpected impacts on population density that in turn prompt unexpected changes in life history. There are also other reasons why density might impact life history independently of predation or mortality more generally. We investigated the consequences of predation and density on life history variation among populations of the Pacific leaping blenny, Alticus arnoldorum. This fish from the island of Guam spends its adult life out of the water on rocks in the splash zone, where it is vulnerable to predation and can be expected to be sensitive to changes in population density that impact resource availability. We found populations invested more in reproduction as predation decreased, while growth rate varied primarily in response to population density. These differences in life history among populations are likely plastic given the extensive gene flow among populations revealed by a previous study. The influence of predation and density on life history was unlikely to have operated independently of each other, with predation rate tending to be associated with reduced population densities. Taken together, our results suggest predation and density can have complex influences on life history, and that plastic life history traits could allow populations to persist in new or rapidly changing environments.  相似文献

Background

Morphological innovations that significantly enhance performance capacity may enable exploitation of new resources and invasion of new ecological niches. The invasion of land from the aquatic realm requires dramatic structural and physiological modifications to permit survival in a gravity-dominated, aerial environment. Most fishes are obligatorily aquatic, with amphibious fishes typically making slow-moving and short forays on to land.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here I describe the behaviors and movements of a little known marine fish that moves extraordinarily rapidly on land. I found that the Pacific leaping blenny, Alticus arnoldorum, employs a tail-twisting movement on land, previously unreported in fishes. Focal point behavioral observations of Alticus show that they have largely abandoned the marine realm, feed and reproduce on land, and even defend terrestrial territories. Comparisons of these blennies'' terrestrial kinematic and kinetic (i.e., force) measurements with those of less terrestrial sister genera show A. arnoldorum move with greater stability and locomotor control, and can move away more rapidly from impending threats.

Conclusions/Significance

My results demonstrate that axial tail twisting serves as a key innovation enabling invasion of a novel marine niche. This paper highlights the potential of using this system to address general evolutionary questions about water-land transitions and niche invasions.  相似文献

The sexual stage of pathogens governs recombination patterns and often also provides means of surviving the off‐season. Despite its importance for evolutionary potential and between‐season epidemiology, sexual systems have not been carefully investigated for many important pathogens, and what generates variation in successful sexual reproduction of pathogens remains unexplored. We surveyed the sexually produced resting structures (chasmothecia) across 86 natural populations of fungal pathogen Podosphaera plantaginis (Ascomycota) naturally infecting Plantago lanceolata in the Åland archipelago, southwestern Finland. For this pathosystem, these resting structures are a key life‐history stage, as more than half of the local pathogen populations go extinct every winter. We uncovered substantial variation in the level of chasmothecia produced among populations, ranging from complete absence to presence on all infected leaves. We found that chasmothecia developed within clonal isolates (single‐strain cultures). Additionally, these clonal isolates all contained both MAT1‐1‐1 and MAT1‐2‐1 genes that characterize mating types in Ascomycetes. Hence, contrary to expectations, we conclude that this species is capable of haploid selfing. In controlled inoculations, we discovered that pathogen genotypes varied in their tendency to produce chasmothecia. Production of chasmothecia was also affected by ambient temperature (E) and by the interaction between temperature and pathogen genotype (G × E). These G, E and G × E effects found both at a European scale and within the Åland archipelago may partly explain the high variability observed among populations in chasmothecia levels. Consequently, they may be key drivers of the evolutionary potential and epidemiology of this highly dynamic pathosystem.  相似文献

This study investigates pre-and post-recruitment characteristics of a population of the redlip blenny (Ophioblennius atlanticus) on a fringing reef in Barbados, W.I. Recruits were observed in 6 of the 8 months of the study, but 90% of all recruitment occurred within a single month. Monthly recruitment rate was not correlated with the monthly mortality of residents, suggesting that the rate at which space becomes available on the reef does not control the timing of blenny recruitment. Most recruitment occurred when adult blenny density was low, i.e. when most total space was available on the reef. Postrecruitment territory size of resident blennies was half that of pre-recruitment territory size, and was better predicted by fish size than it was before recruitment. Aggression by resident blennies increased with blenny density, and was primarily directed at recruiting conspecifics. These results suggest increased competition for territorial space after recruitment. Following the major recruitment pulse, the monthly percentage of recruits dying was correlated with density. This may indicate density-dependent mortality, but could result from the covariance of density with age. We suggest that whether reef fish populations are space-limited or recruitment-limited may vary between species and within species between locations.  相似文献

The roach (Rutilus rutilus) has become a sentinel species for the study of sexual disruption in wild fish populations as a consequence of exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Little is known, however, about the normal ontogeny of sexual development in this species. Here, we analyzed the ontogeny of sexual development in captive‐bred roach and assessed how growth rate and fish size affected the timing of both sexual differentiation and sexual development over a 2‐year period. Ovarian differentiation was first recorded at 68 days post‐fertilization (dpf) and this preceded testicular differentiation (first recorded at 98 dpf). In contrast, sexual maturation occurred at an earlier age in males (300 dpf) compared with females (728 dpf). No differences in body size (length or weight) were recorded between male and female roach until the fish were 415 dpf. Studies on three populations of roach which grew at different rates showed that the timing of sexual differentiation was highly variable and more related to fish size than to fish age. Time to sexual maturation was also variable among populations but, subsequent to their first year of life, gonadal status was less well associated with fish size. Interestingly, the sex ratio of the population was biased towards females in populations that grew more rapidly during early life. The findings presented here provide a valuable foundation of work to support both field‐ and laboratory‐based assessments on the effects of EDCs, and other stressors, on sexual differentiation and development in the roach. The mimic blenny Aspidontus taeniatus Quoy & Gaimard is well known for its resemblance to the juvenile and adult cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus (Valenciennes) in colour and shape. As various reef fishes including piscivores actively approach the cleaner wrasse to solicit cleaning by posing, two types of benefits have been suggested for this resemblance, that is, protective mimicry and aggressive mimicry. In aggressive mimicry, the mimic blenny is supposed to have considerable opportunities to bite the fin of deceived fishes when they pose, but some studies have confirmed that fin biting does not seem to be the main feeding tactic in the blenny in nature. Here, we examined the feeding tactics including fin biting by the mimic blenny in relation to its body size in a field observational survey in the coral reefs of Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan. The blenny was observed feeding mainly on four food items: the tentacles of Christmas tree worms, the mantle edges of boring clams, the demersal eggs in damselfishes’ nests and the fins of fishes. The feeding frequency by fin biting significantly decreased with body size, while that by egg predation significantly increased with body size of the blenny. When predating on eggs, the blenny was vigorously attacked by egg‐guarding fish, but often succeeded in raiding their nests by forming a feeding group. When feeding by fin biting, the blenny attacked prey fish without performing any cleaning. The ratio of fin biting was considerably higher in small‐sized blennies, suggesting reliance on this feeding tactic because of a difficulty in conducting a risky egg predation. Thus, our results suggest that the mimic blenny utilizes aggressive mimicry only when it is small as an alternative feeding tactic.  相似文献

Combtooth blennies (Blenniidae) have a wide array of diets, including coral polyps, fish scales/mucus/rays, and detritus. However, there is limited knowledge about the diet of some species. We described the diet of 30 blenny species from subtidal, intertidal, or supralittoral habitats in Kochi (warm temperate) and Okinawa (tropical), Japan. Cluster analysis of dietary overlap grouped blennies into seven feeding groups: omnivores, herbivores, detritivores, molluscivores, corallivores, worm-like invertebrate feeders, and fish mucus/scale/ray feeders. The largest cluster, detritivores, contained 17 blenny species from all habitat zones and both climate zones. Our findings suggest that closely related species fill similar feeding niches and detritus is an important component of many blenny diets.  相似文献

The conditions under which humans benefit from contributing to a public good have attracted great interest; in particular the potential role of punishment of cheaters is hotly debated. In contrast, similar studies on other animals are lacking. In this study, we describe for the first time how the course of interactions between parasitic sabre‐tooth blennies (the cheaters) and their reef fish victims can be used to study both punishment and the emergence of public goods. Sabre tooth blennies (Plagiotremus sp.) sneak up from behind to bite off small pieces of scales and/or mucus from other fish. Victims regularly show spontaneous aggression as well as aggressive responses to blenny attacks. In a between species comparison, we tested how the probability of chasing a blenny is affected by (1) the option of avoiding interactions with a blenny by avoiding its small territory, and (2) variation in local abundance of conspecifics. We found that resident victim species are more aggressive towards blennies than visiting species. This difference persisted when we controlled for victim size and territoriality, suggesting that it is the enforced repeated game structure that causes residents to chase blennies. In residents, we also found a negative correlation between aggression towards blennies and local abundance, which suggests that the benefits of chasing are diluted with increasing local abundance. We discuss the implication of these results for future studies.  相似文献

Synopsis We observed predation of demersal fish eggs by the clingfish Pherallodichthys meshimaensis on the shallow reefs of Kuchierabu-jima Island, southern Japan. The processes of egg predation varied with the target species. For targeting of eggs of the combtooth blenny Istiblennius edentulus, up to 65 individuals of the clingfish gathered around the I. edentulus nest hole. Some individuals succeeded in intruding into the hole and fed on eggs while the egg-guarding male of I. edentulus temporarily left the nest. For targeting of eggs of the triplefin blenny Helcogramma obtusirostris, solitary clingfish individuals closely approached spawning females of H. obtusirostris at nests on open surfaces of rocks. Most clingfish contained only fish eggs in their diets, and these fish-egg eaters had larger body sizes than individuals that mainly fed on harpacticoid crustacea. Thus, P. meshimaensis may change its feeding habits when growing to an obligate fish-egg eater targeting demersal egg spawners.  相似文献

Synopsis We examined the stock composition and life history of Pacific cod, Gadus macrocephalus, in the northeast Pacific Ocean from sagittal otoliths collected from three marine fishing areas in Washington State, U.S.A. We analyzed both stable isotope ratios (δ18O and δ13C) and trace elemental concentrations (Sr, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn) for these otoliths. The combination of δ18O and δ13C, and correlation of δ18O vs. 1000Sr/Ca and 1000Mg/Ca showed clear separations between North Puget Sound and coastal cod, suggesting there might be two different spawning stocks in the region. The North Puget Sound cod might represent an ‘Estuary-type’ from the Strait of Georgia, whereas coastal cod might represent an ‘Ocean-type’ from the Pacific west coast. Isotopic variations from five representative otoliths also showed a two-stage life history for Pacific cod, and a critical transition period for cod in migration to the ocean or in age of sexual maturity. These chemical interpretations and conclusions appear in agreement with biological observations of Pacific cod, and are consistent with results of previous studies for other marine fish species in nearby areas.  相似文献

The present research is a first attempt to study the hyperbenthic fauna of the surf zone of Valdivia Bay (South East Pacific--Ecuador), an exposed low tide terrace--rip beach. The aims of the study were to contribute to the inventory of the surf zone fauna of the tropical southeast Pacific coast, to investigate spatial distribution patterns along the bay and to search for possible tidal effects on the hyperbenthic composition. Samples were taken during daylight with a hyperbenthic sledge on 6 consecutive days in August 1999 at high tide, low tide and mid tide. The hyperbenthic community was characterized by quantifying the higher taxa, their density and the relative composition of the dominant groups. No tidal effect could be observed, but two main geographically distinct hyperbenthic assemblages were distinguished along the bay, related to hydrodynamic factors (local current velocity, intertidal beach slope and suspended particulate matter). In the turbulent northern part of the bay the highest densities were encountered and hyperbenthos was, next to the dominant mysid Metamysidopsissp., mainly composed of planktonic organisms (calanoid copepods, chaetognaths and fish eggs). In the calmer southern part of the bay Metamysidopsissp. dominated as well, but the community was completed with other mysid species, and early life stages of Brachyura and fish. Most striking was the general dominance of the mysid Metamysidopsis sp. in all the samples (97%, max. density of 62000 ind. 100 m-2) and the high amount of unknown species. Penaeid shrimp larvae, important for the local shrimp industry, were only found in very low densities during the sampling period (1%). Compared to other studies on the whole surf zone hyperbenthic community of sandy beaches, the average densities encountered in Valdivia Bay can be considered to be relatively high (2500--6000 ind. 100 m-2). Although limited in time and performed with a limited taxonomic resolution, the results indicate a high contribution of early life stages of invertebrate and fish species to the biodiversity of the intertidal hyperbenthic community in comparison with temperate regions.  相似文献

Synopsis We described aspects of the life history of the small, cryptic, triplefin blenny, Enneapterygius atriceps, collected from the mouth of Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii. We examined otolith microstructure to construct a von Bertalanffy growth curve, described a length–weight relationship, performed a detailed dietary analysis, used standard histological techniques to determine size at maturity and reproductive patterns, determined batch fecundity, and used an index of gonadal development to examine spawning seasonality. Enneapterygius atriceps is a remarkably short-lived species with low fecundity and a short, well-defined breeding season. Dietary analysis suggests this fish lives and feeds around the bases of dead coral heads. This study generated the first otolith-based growth curve for any member of the Tripterygiidae.  相似文献

To investigate seasonal changes in reproductive and physical condition, sexual dimorphism, and mating tactics in the jewelled blenny Salarias fasciatus, monthly collections were conducted on the fringing reef in northern Okinawa, Japan. Monthly variation in the female gonadosomatic index suggested that the breeding season of this species is from April to June. The physical condition and hepatosomatic index of both sexes considerably deteriorated during the course of the breeding season. Such declines may be primarily due to egg production in females and brood care in males. Males’ elongated anal spines were longer than females’, but no other apparent sexual dimorphisms were detected, indicating that S. fasciatus exhibits a low degree of sexual dimorphism. Examinations of testes size and the testicular gland area during the estimated breeding season revealed that the gonadosomatic index values of smaller males did not differ from those of larger males. This result may differ from other blenny species that exhibit alternative male reproductive tactics. However, patterns of male testicular glands of S. fasciatus were similar to those of other blennies with alternative tactics, i.e., smaller males had poorly developed testicular glands compared with larger males.  相似文献

We conducted a manipulative field experiment to determine whether the leaping behaviour of wild juvenile sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka dislodges ectoparasitic sea lice Caligus clemensi and Lepeophtheirus salmonis by comparing sea‐lice abundances between O. nerka juveniles prevented from leaping and juveniles allowed to leap at a natural frequency. Juvenile O. nerka allowed to leap had consistently fewer sea lice after the experiment than fish that were prevented from leaping. Combined with past research, these results imply potential costs due to parasitism and indicate that the leaping behaviour of juvenile O. nerka does, in fact, dislodge sea lice.  相似文献

The relationship at the local level between fish condition and environmental variables was investigated in Salaria pavo (peacock blenny) juveniles. The relationships between fish condition and 18 environmental variables of shallow areas of the lagoon relating to intra‐ and interspecific fish interactions, water quality and habitat structure, were analysed. The study revealed that water depth and S. pavo biomass (both related to intraspecific fish interactions) were the ecological variables accounting for most of the variation in the condition of S. pavo juveniles, in this case a negative effect. In this way, the condition of S. pavo juvenile populations may be a good indicator of fish density interactions.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of an early boost of cortisol exposure in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) eggs during fertilisation on subsequent behavioural responses when exposed to a sudden stimulus in larvae and juveniles. At 55 d post‐fertilisation (dpf), treatment had no effect on high accelerations occurring after a sudden event. At 146 dpf, these high accelerations were more frequent in cortisol‐treated fish than in controls. At 146 dpf also, swimming activity was increased in cortisol‐treated fish both before and after the sudden stimulus. This study underlines the important behavioural modifications in both larvae and juveniles, linked to a change in the surrounding environment of the embryo. Indeed, fish exposed to cortisol as eggs showed a higher level of fearfulness later in life. Our findings are of major interest for stress management in an aquaculture context and also allow for a better understanding of the long‐lasting effects of a permanent and/or acute stress – mediated by cortisol – that could be encountered by females, affecting population's life history trajectory.  相似文献

Field observations on feeding and related behavior of the mimic blennyAspidontus taeniatus and 3 species closely related to it, and the cleaner fish (model)Labroides dimidiatus were made at the coral reef of Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan, along with analysis of gut contents. The mimic blenny fed mostly on demersal eggs of fishes and tentacles of polychaetes, but it rarely tore pieces from the fins of host fishes even when they were posing for cleaning. The feeding habits of the mimic blenny are compared with those in other localities and with those of related species. It is concluded that the mimicry can hardly be regarded as an aggressive one: posing by host fishes seems to be a secondary result of the resemblance which may have developed because of the benefit for immunity from predation, and the resemblance itself prevents the blenny from becoming a specialized fin-eater because it can be easily recognized by host fishes.  相似文献

We counted individuals of the family Blenniidae and estimated their sizes on gas platforms southeast of Dauphin Island, Alabama. We observed species abundance decreasing as depth increased. Fish sizes also decreased with depth. The most abundant species was molly miller, Scartella cristata, followed by plumed blenny, Hypleurochilus multifilis, tessellated blenny, Hypsoblennius invemar, and seaweed blenny, Parablennius marmoreus. Total blenny abundance was positively related to the barnacle, Megabalanus antillensis, and dissolved oxygen concentrations, and inversely related to Anthozoa. Individually, S. cristata was correlated with M. antillensis, and inversely related to salinity, while the other blenny species showed more complex correlations to invertebrates. As a community, blennies showed a clear separation based on depth independent of offshore/inshore sites and sample date based on multidimensional scaling analyses. Our study suggests that attached invertebrates, particularly M. antillensis, provided a predation refuge, allowing these blenny species to exist in an otherwise unsuitable habitat, i.e. open shallow waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

We used a multistrain approach to study the intra‐ and interspecific variability of the growth rates of three Pseudo‐nitzschia species – P. australis, P. fraudulenta, and P. pungens – and of their domoic acid (DA) production. We carried out mating and batch experiments to investigate the respective effects of strain age and cell size, and thus the influence of their life cycle on the physiology of these species. The cell size – life cycle relationship was characteristic of each species. The influence of age and cell size on the intraspecific variability of growth rates suggests that these characteristics should be considered cautiously for the strains used in physiological studies on Pseudo‐nitzschia species. The results from all three species do not support the hypothesis of a decrease in DA production with time since isolation from natural populations. In P. australis, the cellular DA content was rather a function of cell size. More particularly, cells at the gametangia stage of their life cycle contained up to six times more DA than smaller or larger cells incapable of sexual reproduction. These findings reveal a link between P. australis life cycle and cell toxicity. This suggest that life cycle dynamics in Pseudo‐nitzschia natural populations may influence bloom toxicity.  相似文献
