After 183 days, the retention of the visible implant elastomer marks implanted on the belly and along the basis of the ventral fin margin of the European silver eel Anguilla anguilla was 100%. The retention of the alcian blue spots on the belly was 84% after 1 day, but decreased to 68% by the end of the experiment (after 183 days). Marking-induced mortality was 0% for both marking types over the complete trial period.  相似文献

Visible implant elastomer (VIE) was evaluated as a method for individual marking of small perch Perca fluviatilis and common bully Gobiomorphus cotidianus to use in capture–recapture studies. Growth, survival and mark retention was measured in 25 VIE marked and 15 unmarked fish of each species during a 125 day laboratory experiment. Marking had no effect on growth or survival of either species and mark retention in perch was 100%. Common bully mark retention was high for the initial 30 days but decreased to 72% by the end of the experiment. VIE marking provided an excellent method for individual identification of small perch over periods of at least 125 days, but improvements to common bully mark retention are necessary if VIE is to be used in capture–recapture studies >30 days.  相似文献

A 95‐day experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of a visible implant elastomer tag (VIE) versus a coded wire tag (CWT) implanted in juvenile Tibet fish Oxygymnocypris stewartii (Lloyd, 1908; total length 5~7 cm) under laboratory conditions. Mortality, tag retention and growth in three groups of juvenile O. stewartii (VIE‐tagged, CWT‐tagged and control) in duplicate were determined in six indoor tanks (300‐L/tank volume, 100 fish/tank) at 15.6 ± 0.5°C water temperature. Results showed that neither tagging method had a significant difference on the mortality of the experimental fish, but that the growth rate in the VIE group was significantly lower than in the CWT and control groups. Mean tag retention in the VIE group was 95.2%, and 98.9% in the CWT group, with no significant differences in tag retention in the two methods. The study indicates that both VIE and CWT are suitable short‐term tagging methods for hatchery O. stewartii juveniles.  相似文献

To test the reliability of PIT tags and VIE marks as new marking techniques for the bullhead Cottus gobio , different tagging treatments were assayed. The relatively high recapture rates suggest the applicability of both marking techniques for this small benthic fish species.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to mark endangered sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) with visible implant elastomer (VIE) in order to assess mortality, compatibility, retention, persistence and histological reactions resulting from this tagging technique. It was hypothesized there would be only minor effects on the fishes' health, and assumed that acute effects would be more pronounced than long‐term effects. On 11 September 2013, 20 specimens were tagged ventrally with visible implant elastomer, 20 received a subcutaneous injection with 0.9% NaCl solution, and another 20 served as untreated control. Mean total length was 28.0 ± 1.8 cm and mean body mass 64.1 ± 12.0 g. The sterlets were kept in four 4,000‐L tanks filled with 2,400‐L water. Acute effects were monitored for 95 days, where fish were held at temperatures between 2.4°C and 15.2°C, reflecting outdoor conditions. Chronic effects were examined 282 days post‐tagging through histological sections of the tagging region in five sterlets. During the first 95 days of observation, tag retention was 100%. No signs of incompatibility were detected. Body mass did not significantly differ between VIE‐tagged fish and controls. At day 282 post‐tagging, however, distinct tissue reactions were visible at the tagging sites of nine fish. Histological examination of five fish revealed a variable degree of infiltration with leukocytes in the areas around the elastomer, which did not necessarily correspond with the externally visible degree of inflammation. After medical treatment, the lesions healed without complications, whereas the retention rate of the VIE tags was 5%. According to the findings, the tag location rather than the tag itself was responsible for the externally visible irritations, indicating that the ventral subcutis of sterlet is not a suitable site, even for small VIE tags in long‐term studies. The results of this study also suggest that VIE marking should in general be critically evaluated before application in field studies.  相似文献

Passive Integrated Transponder tags (PIT tags) are recommended as the most suitable method for tagging fish on the basis of their high retention and fish survival rates. The objective of this study was to determine the long‐term effects (between 1 and 11 years) of the PIT tag on the growth of the yellow European eel (Anguilla anguilla). A difference of more than 50% was observed in the growth of marked and unmarked yellow eels. If this is a general long‐term effect in all eels, it would seriously restrict the use of PIT tags for studying the dynamics of European eel populations, and so for their management.  相似文献

Visible implant elastomer (VIE) tagging showed no significant effect on survival of either 230 single-tagged or 60 multiple-tagged small European eels Anguilla anguilla . Mean tag retention was 98·7% during the 5 month laboratory experiments. Multiple VIE tags had no observed effect on European eel locomotor behaviour. VIE appears a reliable method for individually tagging small European eels, and could be useful in capture–recapture field studies.  相似文献

Reliably marking larvae and reidentifying them after metamorphosis is a challenge that has hampered studies on recruitment, dispersal, migration and survivorship of amphibians for a long time, as conventional tags are not reliably retained through metamorphosis. Molecular methods allow unique genetic fingerprints to be established for individuals. Although microsatellite markers have successfully been applied in mark–recapture studies on several animal species, they have never been previously used in amphibians to follow individuals across different life cycle stages. Here, we evaluate microsatellites for genetic across‐stages mark–recapture studies in amphibians and test the suitability of available software packages for genotype matching. We sampled tadpoles of the dendrobatid frog Allobates femoralis, which we introduced on a river island in the Nature Reserve ‘Les Nouragues’ in French Guiana. In two subsequent recapture sessions, we searched for surviving juveniles and adults, respectively. All individuals were genotyped at 14 highly variable microsatellite loci, which yielded unique genetic fingerprints for all individuals. We found large differences in the identification success of the programs tested. The pairwise‐relatedness‐based approach, conducted with the programs kingroup or ML‐Relate, performed best with our data set. Matching ventral patterns of juveniles and adult individuals acted as a control for the reliability of the genetic identification. Our results demonstrate that microsatellite markers are a highly powerful tool for studying amphibian populations on an individual basis. The ability to individually track amphibian tadpoles throughout metamorphosis until adulthood will be of substantial value for future studies on amphibian population ecology and evolution.  相似文献

Mark‐recaptures studies are often conducted to monitor trends in sturgeon populations. However, many of these studies experience low recapture rates, minimal movement between marking‐recapture phases suggesting that sturgeon as a group are not conducive to mark‐recapture techniques. In this study, two mark‐recapture studies that were conducted differently were reviewed. A study was conducted on the Mattagami River using random nets set throughout the study area in both the mark and recapture phases. The other study was conducted on Lake of the Woods and marked sturgeon in tributaries during the spawning period and the recapture phase within the lake and river during the summer foraging period using random nets sets. Sturgeon's conduciveness to mark‐recapture studies was assessed on the Mattagami River mark‐recapture study by determining detection probability (p) using a hierarchical Bayesian model with data augmentation among three effects: individual effect, temporal effects, and behavioural response effects. Detection probability was constant over individuals and temporally suggesting model M0 (Otis, Burnham, White, & Anderson, 1978 ) was suitable for lake sturgeon in the Mattagami River; only the M0 would converge for the Lake of the Woods study. For this study, the assumption that “all individuals have the same probability of being captured during the marking phase” was believed to have been violated given approximately 16%–20% of adult Lake Sturgeon from a population spawn within a year. A population estimate accounting for p provided estimates 56% lower than calculated by a Chapman modification of the Peterson estimate for a closed population. Bias was believed to have been introduced as the Lake of the Woods population did not account for the non‐spawning adults that were encountered during the recapture phase and not vulnerable during the initial marking phase. This was not unique to the Lake of the Woods study as other sturgeon studies, especially multi‐year, assumes a closed population which potentially biased estimates and overestimated their recovery.  相似文献

Historically, management of fish populations has been achieved through the use of age‐derived estimates of growth and mortality. For long‐lived species such as the paddlefish, Polyodon spathula, the validation of calcified structures is necessary to correct for the presence of false annuli or the absence of growth rings. Regardless, numerous studies on paddlefish populations throughout their range have continued the use of un‐validated age estimates to evaluate dynamic rate functions. The use of mark‐recapture studies has been applied widely to evaluate growth of short‐lived fishes, but only recently to a few long‐lived freshwater fishes (i.e. white sturgeon, shovelnose sturgeon, and pallid sturgeon). This study provides the first simultaneous evaluation of both mark‐recapture and age‐estimate information in determining population characteristics for paddlefish. In doing so, this study has determined that the Pspathula population in the Black River below Clearwater Dam, Missouri is sustainable. Additionally, mark‐recapture information is sufficient to produce accurate and reliable assessments of paddlefish populations in lieu of validated aging structures; future management should be centered on accurate scientific methods, which is not the case when using un‐validated aging structures (e.g. scales, otoliths, fin rays, dentary bones) to determine population parameters. Mark‐recapture information can provide an accurate, alternative source of growth and mortality information for use in evaluating and managing paddlefish populations throughout their range.  相似文献

The unimpeded downstream movement patterns and migration success of small female and male Anguilla anguilla through a catchment in north‐west Europe were studied using an acoustic hydrophone array along the River Finn and into the Foyle Estuary in Ireland. Twenty silver‐stage A. anguilla (total length, LT, range: 332–520 mm) were trapped 152 km upstream from a coastal marine sea‐lough outlet and internally tagged with acoustic transmitters of which 19 initiated downstream migration. Migration speed was highly influenced by river flow within the freshwater (FW) compartment. Anguilla anguilla activity patterns were correlated with environmental influences; light, tidal direction and lunar phase all influenced the initiation of migration of tagged individuals. Migration speed varied significantly between upstream and lower river compartments. Individuals migrated at a slower speed in transitional water and sea‐lough compartments compared with the FW compartment. While 88·5% survival was recorded during migration through the upper 121 km of the river and estuary, only 26% of A. anguilla which initiated downstream migration were detected at the outermost end of the acoustic array. Telemetry equipment functioned efficiently, including in the sea‐lough, so this suggests high levels of mortality during sea‐lough migration, or less likely, long‐term sea‐lough residence by silver A. anguilla emigrants. This has important implications for eel management plans.  相似文献

Studies have reported poor survival of surgically tagged freshwater fishes in warm African waters. This study aimed to assess the applicability of using radio telemetry (and surgical implantation of tags) for Anguilla spp. Nineteen yellow eels (Anguilla bengalensis, A. marmorata and A. mossambica) were surgically implanted with radio tags between October 2018 and January 2019 in the Thukela River, South Africa. Most eels were alive 6 months after tagging, and recaptured eels displayed advanced or complete healing at the incision site. Therefore, this method appears suitable for African freshwater eels.  相似文献

  • 1 Individual mark–release–recapture is an important method for gathering data on insect movement, although it is limited by the constraints of tagging small insects with individual information.
  • 2 Microdots, originally developed for covert security applications, are small polymer discs (diameter 0.5 mm) bearing up to 26 characters of information and have the potential as an alternative to the larger bee tags. In the present study, we test microdots for the individual marking of a 9‐mm parasitoid wasp.
  • 3 We individually marked 505 wasps. The recapture rate was 24% of individuals over 189 recapture events, for which 84% retained legible microdot labels. Movement was in the range 0–161 m with a mean displacement 21.2 ± 2.7 m. A captive survival experiment showed no difference in lifespan between marked and unmarked wasps.
  • 4 The present study shows that microdots can provide an effective, durable, low‐cost method for individually tagging small insects. The technique offers new opportunities by greatly expanding the capability for individually marking small insects, shifting the minimum size below that of bee tags, which is the only other manufactured option for individualized miniature marking.

Stock enhancement efforts have been used to aid in increasing dwindling population levels of Lake Sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens, that are currently of conservation concern. Consistent monitoring of stock enhanced fisheries requires a reliable and reproducible method to mark stocked fish such that the success of such programs can be determined. Recently, stable isotopic marking of hard structures in fish has been developed in a variety of species, however, optimal marking conditions are less well understood. In this study the metabolism of strontium in juvenile Lake Sturgeon and determined parameters for optimisation of marking success in the fin ray were examined. Using radioactive strontium (85Sr), whole body influx and efflux rates of strontium were 3.02 ± 0.364 pmol h?1 g?1 (mean ± standard error) and 0.04 ± 0.007 pmol h?1 g?1, respectively. Furthermore, short‐term accumulation of 85Sr in a variety of tissues was assessed and found to be greatest in the fin ray. Biological half‐life of the stable isotope 86Sr was shortest in muscle and longest in the fin ray tissue. Immersion and length of immersion timing had positive relationships with marking success. Additionally, the signature remained in 75% of fish analysed 550 days post‐mark. Data suggest that marking success was determined by duration of immersion in the mark and concentration of the mark introduced to the water.  相似文献

Survival is a fundamental parameter in population dynamics with increasing importance in the management and conservation strategies of wildlife populations. Survival probability in vertebrates is usually estimated by live‐encounter data obtained by means of physical mark–capture–recapture protocols. Non‐invasive acoustic marking relying on individual‐specific features of signals has been alternatively applied as a marking technique, especially in secretive species. Nevertheless, to date no research has compared survival rate estimates obtained by acoustic and physical marking. We estimated half‐yearly and annual survival and recapture rates of a secretive and threatened passerine, the Dupont's lark Chersophilus duponti, using two separate live‐encounter data sets of males collected simultaneously by physical and acoustic marking in the same study area. The separate analysis of both methods led to different model structures, since transient individuals had to be accounted for in the acoustic marking but not in the physical marking data set. Furthermore, while reencounter probabilities did not differ between methods, survival estimates employing physical marking were lower than those obtained acoustically, especially between the postbreeding and the breeding period when the apparent survival of colour‐banded birds was twice as low as for acoustic marking. The combination of marking methods suggested the existence of different subsets of individuals differentially sampled within the population: whereas colour‐banded males seemed to represent the territorial fraction of the population, both resident and floater individuals were probably detected by acoustic marking. Using traditional mark–recapture methods exclusively could have misled our estimates of survival rates, potentially affecting prospective predictions of population dynamics. Acoustic marking has been poorly applied in mark–recapture studies, but might be a powerful complement to obtain accurate estimates of fundamental demographic parameters such as survival and dispersal.  相似文献

After 1 week, the mortality of European eel Anguilla anguilla after marking glass eels with oxytetracycline (OTC) and alizarin red (ALC), and farm eels with coded wire tags (CWTs) was 0% within all treatments. The suitability of implanting CWTs in the nose region (tag loss 94% after 1 week) and in the dorsal musculature (tag loss 4% after 1 week) was also examined.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the effects of immersion marking with calcein (CAL) and alizarin red S (ARS) on growth and mortality of juvenile bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis, and assess mark quality in otoliths, scales, and fin rays, CAL from 50 to 200 mg L?1 and ARS from 150 to 300 mg L?1 concentrations were used. With the exception of non‐lateral line scales from 50 mg L?1 CAL treatments, immersion for 24 h produced detectable marks in sagittae, lateral line and non‐lateral line scales, and fin rays (dorsal, pectoral, ventral, anal, and caudal) at 100 days post‐marking. Detectable fluorescent marks in sagittae were readily observed at concentrations of 150–200 mg L?1 CAL or 150–300 mg L?1 ARS. Marks were poorly visible in all non‐lateral line scales from both CAL‐ and ARS‐treated groups. Fluorescent marks were readily detected in lateral line scales at 100–200 mg L?1 CAL or 150–300 mg L?1 ARS, and in fin rays at 150–200 mg L?1 CAL or 150–300 mg L?1 ARS. In particular, optimal marks were observed at the highest concentrations investigated in sagittae (300 mg L?1 ARS), lateral line scales (150–200 mg L?1 CAL or 250–300 mg L?1 ARS), and fin rays (200 mg L?1 CAL or 250–300 mg L?1 ARS). However, fluorescent marks visible to the naked eye were not produced by any of the CAL or ARS treatments in sagittae, scales, or fin rays during this experiment. In addition, there was no significant difference on survival and growth of marked fish compared to controls throughout the experiment (P > 0.05).  相似文献

This study presents a new chemical double‐marking technique for European glass eels Anguilla anguilla by combing alizarin red S (ARS) and strontium chloride hexahydrate (Sr). Marked eels (double marked with ARS and Sr, but also single marked with ARS) were exposed in situ to brackish water (15 g l?1 artificial sea salt) for 14 days and did not exhibit increased mortalities compared with unmarked eels. Indeed, no mortality occurred in a marked group during the experiments. Moreover, an efficient mass‐marking approach with low handling effort for both single ARS and double ARS‐Sr techniques is described and was proven to be practicable for large‐scale stocking programmes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes), is classified as endangered in the 2010 IUCN Red List and is protected under Irish and European legislation due to a drastic decline in abundance and range over the past century. Mark-recapture methods play a vital role in the process of estimating population size, and in the monitoring and conservation of mobile species. A variety of marking techniques are routinely used in a range of crayfish species for ecological research. The majority of information on the effects of these marking techniques on the physiology of crayfish species focuses on survivability and growth, whereas information is scarce on the effects on crayfish behaviour. This study investigates the behavioural changes of crayfish in reaction to five commonly used marking techniques in laboratory conditions. The marking techniques used were internal and external passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags, visible implant elastomer (VIE) tags, cauterisation and ablation. Effects of marking technique on behaviour were evaluated immediately after marking, and over a 14-day period, on 78 crayfish. Results indicated that the internal passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags negatively affected crayfish behaviour by increasing resting levels. Ablation and cauterisation also increased grooming levels, while marking reduced activity levels in general. These effects on behaviour occurred immediately after marking, but quickly dissipated. These results suggest that the use of internal PIT tags for marking white-clawed crayfish may need to be avoided as increased resting levels could lead to increased exposure out of refuge and predation. This may have a detrimental impact on the welfare and conservation of white-clawed crayfish and also lead to biased population estimates during mark-recapture projects. The remaining marking techniques (external PIT tag, VIE tag, ablation, cauterisation) may be used, as changes in behaviour will not have a detrimental impact and therefore should not lead to biased population estimates.  相似文献

This work examined three different phenotypes of the yellow‐eel stage of the European eel Anguilla anguilla, broad‐heads, narrow‐heads and eels with an intermediate head shape. The aim was to see whether broad‐headed A. anguilla, which generally consume harder, larger prey, such as crustaceans and fish, exerted greater bite force than the narrow‐headed variant, which mainly consume soft, small prey such as chironomid larvae. It was found that in 99 yellow A. anguilla, in vivo bite force of broad‐heads are higher compared with narrow‐heads and intermediates.  相似文献
