Length–weight (TL vs WWT) and chelae length–width (ChL vs ChW) relationships were described for juveniles, males and females, and for form I and form II males of Procambarus acutus acutus. The length–weight relationships for juveniles, form I, form II males, and females could be described as: WWT = 5 × 10−3 TL3.09, WWT = 6 × 10−3 TL3.61, WWT = 6 × 10−9 TL3.26, and WWT = 6 × 10−4 TL3.5, respectively. In all forms, growth was allometric (P < 0.05). The ancova test indicated that slopes and intercepts of the length–weight regressions were significantly different between sex and sexual stages. The regressions for chelae length–width relationships for form I and form II males, and females were: ChW = −0.81 + 0.27CL, ChW = −0.33 + 0.25CL, and ChW = −0.82 + 0.32CL, respectively. Although the slope and intercepts of regressions for ChL and ChW were similar for those of form I and form II males, the slopes and intercepts of regressions of females were significantly different from form I and form II males. No statistical difference was observed in mean ChL between form II males and females (P > 0.05), but a significant difference was detected in mean ChL between form I and form II males (P < 0.05) and form I and females (P < 0.05). Form I males had longer ChL than form II males and females. The same trend was observed in mean ChW for form I and form II males, but a significant difference was detected between form II males and females (P < 0.05). In addition, results indicated that chelae lengths and widths increased allometrically with total length (TL) for both sex and sexual stages.  相似文献

The spawning periods, sex ratio and length at first maturity were determined for six commercially important finfish species collected from Oman's industrial trawl fishery. During 1 year of monthly sampling, biological data were collected on 5586 fish. ancova was used to compare the length–weight relationships between sexes. There were sex‐specific differences in length‐weight relationships for three of the six species examined. One serranid, Epinephelus diacanthus, and a sparid, Pagellus affinis, had sex ratios significantly different from the expected ratio of 1 : 1. Size–frequency data revealed more male fish in the larger size classes for E. diacanthus, P. affinis and Nemipterus japonicus. Data on the development of female gonads and Gonado‐somatic Index (GSI) revealed that the six species spawned at different times of the year. With the exception of female E. diacanthus, all fish had low GSI values during the onset of the summer monsoon period in June. The proportion of immature vs mature fish in the sample differed among species. For two species, Lethrinus nebulosus and Cheimerius nufar, more than 40% of the fish sampled (both sexes) were immature. Approximately 33% female and 41% male P. affinis were also immature. Management options such as temporal and area closures are discussed in light of the large number of immature fish caught by the fishery.  相似文献

Aim To quantitatively explore the extent to which many different populations of the same species (chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) respond cohesively to a common large‐scale climatic trend. Location The Columbia River basin of the northwestern US. Methods I used regression analyses to describe the downward trend in population growth (number of recruits per spawning adult) for thirteen populations of chinook salmon distributed among three geographical regions: Snake River, Upper Columbia River and Middle Columbia River. I then used residuals from these regressions to characterize per capita productivity for each brood year. Positive residuals indicated productivity higher than that predicted by the time series, while negative residuals revealed years in which productivity was lower than predicted. I next used analysis of covariance (ancova ) to test the null hypothesis that associations between ocean/climate conditions and deviations from predicted population growth did not vary among geographical regions. All ancova s used residuals generated from the regressions as the response variable, geographical region as the main effect, and climatic condition [characterized by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation index (PDO)] as the covariate. A major climate shift occurred in 1977, and because the association of the PDO with salmon productivity varied between the pre‐ and post‐1977 climate regimes, I analysed data from the two regimes separately. Results There were marked impacts of climate on salmon production that varied among geographical regions and between decade‐scale climate regimes. During the pre‐1977 climate regime, productivity of salmon populations from the Snake River tended to exceed expectations (i.e. residuals were positive) when values of the PDO were negative. In contrast, this pattern was not evident in populations from the upper or middle Columbia Rivers. During the post‐1977 regime when ocean productivity was generally lower, the association of the PDO with salmon productivity changed – productivity tended to fall short of expectations (i.e. residuals were negative) when values of the PDO were negative. Main conclusions Understanding the linkages between salmon populations and climate is critical as managers attempt to preserve threatened salmon populations in the face of both natural or human‐induced climate variation and the litany of human activities affecting salmon. An important step in this understanding is the recognition that the response to ocean/climate change by salmon populations of the same species and river basin is not necessarily homogeneous.  相似文献

Synopsis We examined the ontogenetic allometry of intestine length in relation to body length and body mass in 21 species of fish from forest streams in Panama. The relationships between log10 intestine length and log10 body length and mass were well described by linear regressions, although some species showed slight curvilinearity. Slopes and intercepts of the linear regressions varied considerably among species. Intestine length was positively allometric in most species, with slopes of the intestine length:body length relationship ranging from 1.09 to 2.11. Relative intestine lengths (intestine length/body length) varied by two orders of magnitude (0.39–38.44) in the data set as a whole, but the variation was about one order of magnitude when species were compared at a common body size. Species in which body mass increased more rapidly with body length had more rapid increases in intestine length with body length. Among omnivorous and carnivorous species compared at the same body length, heavier species had longer intestines. Interspecific comparisons of relative intestine length may produce misleading conclusions unless comparisons are made at a common size and account for differences in relative mass.  相似文献

Aim To estimate species turnover of plants on 32 small islands within a 20‐year period and to assess possible changes in community composition and properties, such as species richness and factors affecting it, nestedness, species co‐occurrence and overall community similarity. Additionally, to assess the possible effects of grazing, gull colonies and fire on turnover values. Location Thirty‐two islets in the eastern Aegean Sea (Greece). Methods Complete sampling of plants was performed in 1974 and in 1990–94 (mostly in 1994, which was used as the reference year). Species turnover rates were estimated using both per island and per species approaches. Multiple regression was used to evaluate factors affecting species richness. Chi‐square tests were applied to compare community composition among sampling periods. The effects of various factors on turnover rates and species richness were examined using one‐way anova and ancova . Mann–Whitney tests were applied in order to check for differences between frequencies of occurrence of extinct, immigrant and persisting species. Community nestedness was calculated using bitmatnest and the C‐score index for co‐occurrence was estimated using EcoSim7. Species similarities among islands in each of the 1974 and 1994 data sets were assessed using Jaccard’s index and the two similarity matrices were compared using a Mantel test. Results Of 391 species recorded on the islets, 334 were present in 1974, 301 in 1994 and 244 were common to both these periods. Species richness in the 1974 and 1994 data sets was significantly correlated with elevation and area, but not with distance from the nearest large island. Richness was positively affected by grazing, but not by fire or gull colonies. The slopes of species–area and species–elevation regressions were almost identical in 1974 and 1994. Mean relative turnover was 2.06 (species per islet) and 3.26 (islets per species). Turnover was not correlated with area, elevation or distance from the nearest large island. Nestedness and co‐occurrence levels were very similar. Tables of islet by islet floral similarity (Jaccard’s index) did not differ between the 1974 and 1994 data sets. Main conclusions The turnover rates found are among the highest recorded for plants; at the same time the islet communities exhibit notable stability in overall properties. Our results provide evidence for rapid shifts in species number that may nonetheless be considered as equilibrial dynamics, as these islets are able to respond rapidly to environmental change and disturbance. Human activities, notably the application of grazing, have a significant complicating effect on community dynamics, enhancing observed turnover rates.  相似文献

Abstract Ecologists have long sought to understand why some species are rare and others common. For the most part, inconsistent relationships between local rarity and underlying mechanisms have emerged. One possibility for this inconsistency is that locally rare species may not always be rare. However, it is largely unknown whether most locally rare species in a community possess the capacity to become abundant elsewhere in their geographical range. Here, we identified 57 locally rare plant species of open forest in south‐eastern Australia. We found that most of these species (91%) occurred in higher abundance at other sites within their geographical range (somewhere‐abundant species), while the remaining small percentage of locally rare species were consistently rare (everywhere‐sparse species). Somewhere‐abundant species had significantly smaller seeds on average than everywhere‐sparse species in cross‐species regression analysis. This pattern was not maintained when the influence of other life‐history attributes was controlled for, or when phylogenetic relatedness among species was considered explicitly in phylogenetic regression analysis. In both cross‐species and phylogenetic regressions, somewhere‐abundant and everywhere‐sparse species did not differ significantly with respect to growth form, height, regeneration‐after‐fire strategy, or dispersal. Our findings provide further evidence for the notion that theories to account for local rarity which are couched in terms of within‐community interactions alone are incomplete for the majority of species, because they need to account for different outcomes in different places.  相似文献

Different characters of an organism may be correlated if genes control the allometric relationship between them. If genetic variation exists for such genes then the allometric relation itself is potentially subject to change by selection. In social insects allometric relations represent colony-level characters. If colonies differ in these relations and this variation leads to differential productivity among colonies, then selection on allometric relations can operate at the level of the colony. We assessed the extent of heritable, between-colony variation for the allometric coefficients relating proboscis ( = glossa) length to wing length for two bumble bee species (Bombus huntii and B. occidentalis). We found that in both species colonies did not differ significantly in slope (b) but did differ significantly in intercept (a) of the regression of glossa length on wing length. Within-colony variation of the intercept was estimated by randomly constituting groups of five workers from each colony and calculating the regression for each group. The intraclass correlation was then calculated from the between- and within-colony mean squares. We found significant intraclass correlations in both species, giving heritabilities of 0.5 ± 0.3 in B. hunti and 0.7 ± 0.3 in B. occidentalis. If this allometric relation affects colony foraging success and foraging environments vary geographically, then the intercept should exhibit corresponding geographic variation. We tested this prediction by comparing intercepts calculated using wild-caught B. vagans workers from Alberta, Ontario and Maine. We found that the intercepts did differ significantly between sites, with the bees from Alberta having a significantly smaller intercept than the bees from eastern North America. Our results illustrate the opportunity for selection on an allometric relation that directly affects the foraging success of individual bumble bee colonies.  相似文献

Body length and weight relationships were estimated for sixteen native freshwater fish species (ten Characidae, three Loricariidae, two Heptapteridae and one Astroblepidae, mainly small‐sized fish) collected in the Andean piedmont Hacha River (Caquetá, Colombia) by electrofishing. These are the first length–weight and length–length parameters reported for the species, which are mostly endemic to the Amazonian basin. Maximum lengths in eight of the sixteen studied species are also reported. Knowledge of this biometric data and their relationships can be relevant in the management and conservation of the local fish and fisheries.  相似文献

We present a method for using slopes and intercepts from a linear regression of a quantitative trait as outcomes in segregation and linkage analyses. We apply the method to the analysis of longitudinal systolic blood pressure (SBP) data from the Framingham Heart Study. A first-stage linear model was fit to each subject's SBP measurements to estimate both their slope over time and an intercept, the latter scaled to represent the mean SBP at the average observed age (53.7 years). The subject-specific intercepts and slopes were then analyzed using segregation and linkage analysis. We describe a method for using the standard errors of the first-stage intercepts and slopes as weights in the genetic analyses. For the intercepts, we found significant evidence of a Mendelian gene in segregation analysis and suggestive linkage results (with LOD scores >or= 1.5) for specific markers on chromosomes 1, 3, 5, 9, 10, and 17. For the slopes, however, the data did not support a Mendelian model, and thus no formal linkage analyses were conducted.  相似文献

Objective: Doctors and patients assume that overweight and obesity are negative predictors for good and excellent early outcome after total hip replacement. It was the purpose of this prospective investigation to assess whether overweight or obese patients have worse early postoperative outcome in comparison with normal‐weight patients. Research Methods and Procedures: Sixty‐seven consecutive patients receiving a total hip replacement were enrolled in the study. Patients were grouped into three samples according to BMI: normal‐weight (BMI < 25 kg/m2, n = 11), overweight (BMI 25 to 29.9 kg/m2, n = 36), and obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2, n = 20). At 10 days and at 3 months after surgery, the patient‐centered outcome was analyzed with a self‐administered assessment chart, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) Osteoarthritis Index. Statistical analysis was performed with a multiple regression model that took into consideration further confounding parameters (age, sex, affected side, anchorage of the implant, duration of surgery, hospital length of stay, and prior pain, stiffness, and function). Results: No significant influence of individual BMI on subjective outcome according to the WOMAC questionnaire was observed at either 10 days or 3 months after surgery. Hospital length of stay was comparable, and WOMAC scores did not differ significantly preoperatively, at 10 days, or at 3 months postoperatively among patients with different BMI. Discussion: These data showed that the BMI of the patients in our study sample had no significant impact on early outcome or hospital length of stay after total hip replacement. Our data suggest, therefore, that body weight should not be a justification for withholding surgery from overweight or obese patients.  相似文献

Burbot Lota lota L. is one of the endangered freshwater fish species in western Europe for which the development of controlled larval rearing procedures could produce enough material for stock enhancement. The suitability of the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus as a start food for larviculture of burbot was investigated. After yolk‐absorption, the larvae were stocked in 40‐L tanks under different feeding conditions: clear water rearing conditions with rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) for 10 days (R), green water conditions (Chlorella sp.) with rotifers offered for 10 days (MALR), green water conditions (Chlorella sp.) for 3 days followed by clear water in combination with rotifer feeding for 7 days (AL3R), and clear water conditions with Artemia nauplii offered for 10 days (Art). After the 10‐day feeding, all groups received Artemia nauplii up to 35 days post‐hatching. Larval survival was counted at day 10 and at the end of the 35‐day rearing experiment. At day 35, a significant survival difference was noted between the groups where rotifers were supplemented with algae vs only Artemia. At the end of the experiment, the highest survival rate (69.20%) was obtained with larvae receiving only algae in the first 3 days of feeding. Lowest survival rate (24.90%) was obtained with larvae receiving only Artemia for 35 days. This indicates that smaller prey are essential for burbot at first feeding. Larval length and wet weight were measured at the time of mouth opening, at days 7, 10, and 21, and at the end of the experiment (day 35). On day 35, mean length of the larvae varied significantly between the treatments. However, the final wet weight of the larvae did not vary significantly between the treatments.  相似文献

Data and information are needed to avert the alarming decline and initiate conservation measures for three threatened fishes, Labeo boga (Hamilton, 1822), Nandus nandus (Hamilton, 1822) and Puntius ticto (Hamilton, 1822), from the Ganges River and surrounding ecosystems. These fishes are decreasing rapidly due to high fishing pressures as well as environmental degradation. This study furnishes the length–weight relationships (LWRs), length–length relationships (LLRs) and form factor (a3.0) of these three threatened species from the Ganges River, northwestern Bangladesh. A total of 773 specimens from the three species and two families used for this study were caught by traditional fishing gear between April 2011 and March 2012. The analysis of covariance (ancova ) revealed significant differences between the sexes in LWRs for L. boga (P < 0.001), but not with the remaining species (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the LLRs were highly correlated (r2 > 0.983; P < 0.001), and ancova analyses additionally indicated that LLRs did not differ between sexes (P > 0.05). The calculated form factor (a3.0) was 0.0111, 0.0159 and 0.0129 for L. boga, N. nandus and P. ticto, respectively. This study presents the first references on LWRs, LLRs and form factor for these three threatened species in Bangladesh. The results would be useful for further studies on the population assessment and sustainable conservation of the limited stocks in the Ganges River ecosystem.  相似文献

The effects of UV radiation (UVR) on growth of sporelings of Melobesia membranacea (Esper) Lamouroux, Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi and Mesophyllum lichenoides (Ellis) Lemoine, were investigated by culturing the algae under different doses of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) only and PAR + UVR. Under natural conditions, the light fields occurring in the habitats of the three species differ substantially. Whereas M. lichenoides and L. incrustans inhabit sun‐exposed places in the eulittoral and upper part of the sublittoral, M. membranacea grows as an epiphyte in shady crevices in the eulittoral, where irradiance is < 10% of that in sun‐exposed places. The relative growth rate (RGR) of sporelings of these non‐geniculate coralline algae was affected by the UVR. The extent of harmful UVR effects on growth rate showed a similar increase as a function of the logarithm of the dose in the three species, inferred by a similar slope in all the linear regressions for a given action spectrum. The inhibition of growth under the PAR + UVR showed similar features in the two species of non‐geniculate coralline species from sun‐exposed places, that is, similar intercepts and slopes in the linear regressions of RGR as a function of the logarithm of the biologically effective dose.  相似文献

Observations of hummingbirds feeding at flowers longer or shorter than their bills seem to contradict the view that bill lengths of hummingbirds evolved in concert with the lengths of their flowers. Recent experiments, however, indicate that a hummingbird's ability to feed at artificial flowers of different lengths depends on the widths of the flowers. We examined if the broad range of flower lengths visited by many hummingbird species can be explained by the widths of the flowers. We predicted that both short‐ and long‐billed hummingbirds would include long, wide flower species in their diets, but that short‐billed hummingbirds would not include long, narrow flower species because nectar in these species might be beyond the reach of their bills. If so, the slope of the regression for flower width versus flower length should be smaller for flower species visited by longer‐billed hummingbirds relative to those visited by shorter‐billed hummingbirds. Analyses of data sets for some North American and Monteverde hummingbirds and their food plants were consistent with this prediction, and bill lengths were significantly correlated with the slopes of the regressions of flower width versus length for seven hummingbird species. Comparisons of observed flower use by some Monteverde hummingbird species to flower assemblages generated at random suggest that these significant regressions were not simply a result of allometric relationships between flower lengths and widths, but in some cases reflected active choice by the birds. The two hummingbird–flower data sets also differed significandy in the scaling of corolla width relative to corolla length. In particular, the Monteverde data set contained a large number of long, narrow flower species, which we suggest is a consequence of a different floral evolutionary history and association with long‐billed hummingbird species. The evolutionary effects of hummingbirds and their flowers upon one another are more complex than has generally been realized, and a consideration of corolla length jointly with other floral characters may improve our understanding of hummingbird‐flower relationships.  相似文献

Morphological differences in body shape between females of different reproductive conditions (in terms of insemination and ovarian development) were examined in two species of the Neotropical polistine genus Parachartergus: P. smithii and P. fraternus. The present study shows, for the first time, that non‐size‐based morphological divergence between queens and workers occurs in Parachartergus, an epiponine genus once believed to have little or no morphological caste differences. In the P. smithii colony examined, queens were significantly larger than workers in five of the eight body parts measured (head width, eye width, genal width, mesosomal length, wing length, first metasomal tergum width, and width and length of the second tergum), but the mean values of wing length and first and second tergum widths were not significantly different between them. The queen : worker size ratios tended to be greater anteriorly and smaller posteriorly, although the size ratio was greatest in second tergum length. Analysis of covariance (ancova ) with mesosomal length as covariate showed that queens had proportionally wider heads and narrower first terga than did workers. In the P. fraternus colony, size differences between queens and workers were not significant, and there was little or no difference in shape, but queens had significantly proportionally wider first terga than did workers.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to address length‐weight relationships (LWRs) in seven ornamental fish species from the Unini River basin—the main tributary of lower Negro River (Brazilian Amazon). Specimens were seasonally sampled by using hand nets and beach seines (mesh size < 1 mm) in five different occasions (August 2009—December 2010). Preserved specimens (initially kept in 10% formalin and transferred to 70% ethanol 10 days later) were measured and weighted in laboratory. The LWR was calculated based on a log‐transformed linear regression. The maximum standard length of each species was different from the ones previously reported at Fishbase. In addition, b values were different from the ones reported for the four species whose data were available in the literature.  相似文献

Spatial requirements of species have often been related to body size, usually focusing on one area variable and one taxonomic group at a time. Here, we carried out a quantitative meta‐analysis and developed a minimal model, covering different types of spatial characteristics and several species groups. In a global literature review, 46 empirical regressions on home ranges and geographic ranges were collected, covering thousands of species monitored in various countries. In addition, regional data on minimum key population patches of 167 species occurring in the Netherlands were retrieved from reports. To check consistency, a theoretical model was derived from rate and density variables based on energy equivalency. The minimum number of individuals needed to sustain a viable population was considered invariant to size. According to the equations, areas were expected to scale to mass with an exponent of 1 for the individual home range and of about ¾ for the minimum population ranges. The meta‐analysis of the empirical regressions showed that average slopes for individual home ranges were between 0.74 for cold‐blooded species and 1.05 for birds and mammals. Minimum and average species geographic range scaled to mass with exponents of 1.16–1.29 and 0.28–0.46 respectively. Allometric correlations for the minimum key patch area were weak. The intercepts indicated that carnivores require more space than equally sized herbivores, while homeotherms occupy larger areas than heterotherms. Observed slopes and intercepts were often near model estimations, but important deviations from the average level were noted as well, especially for birds. Although variability was substantial in some cases, allometric approaches can contribute considerably to understanding and protecting area requirements of species.  相似文献

Functional residual capacity (FRC) was determined by nitrogen washout in 55 normal sheep. Data on various external body measurements were collected which included body weight, chest circumference, chest width, body length, height, and sternum length. In addition, data on wet lung weight and wet lung weight/body weight ratio were collected on 10 of the sheep. A significant correlation was found between FRC and all measured parameters except height and sternum length. Multiple linear regression of all external body measurements showed the best correlation of FRC to body weight and body length, while the addition of chest circumference and/or chest width did not significantly improve the correlation. Significant deviation from the population was noted in three sheep (5.5%) that had lung weight/body weight ratios which were significantly lower than the rest of the population.  相似文献

Linear regression and cumulative sum analysis (CUSUM) change point analyses were used to determine whether there had been a significant change in the first flowering date between 1983 and 2006 for 65 species. Both methods agreed that the first flowering date of 47 species did not change and that eight species had a significant change (P < 0.05) in their flowering. Three species shifted to later flowering and five species to earlier. Over the observation period, each method found that the average shift to later flowering was greater (37.4 days or approx. 1.56 days per year for CUSUM change point analysis and 51.4 days or 2.14 days per year for linear regression) than that to earlier flowering (28.4 days or approx. 1.20 days per year for change point analysis and 46.5 days or 1.97 days per year for linear regression). For the remaining 10 species the results of linear regression and change point methods differed. Each method found five species (three earlier flowering and two later) to have a significantly changed first flowering date over their observation period, where the other method did not. Some of these differences can be attributed to the fact that the CUSUM method can detect multiple change points whereas linear regression can not. Significant change points in first flowering date were identified for 13 species between the years 1987 to 1998. The most frequent year identified as a change point year was 1995. The two methods, although not interchangeable, had strong agreement (84.6%) in detecting shifts. This gives greater confidence that a change in flowering has occurred for eight species and equally importantly, that no change in first flowering date has occurred for 47 species.  相似文献

Objectives

Two decades ago, Rilling and Seligman, hereafter abbreviated to RAS Study, suggested modern humans had relatively larger temporal lobes for brain size compared to other anthropoids. Despite many subsequent studies drawing conclusions about the evolutionary implications for the emergence of unique cerebral specializations in Homo sapiens, no re-assessment has occurred using updated methodologies.

Methods

We reassessed the association between right temporal lobe volume (TLV) and right hemisphere volume (HV) in the anthropoid brain. In a sample compiled de novo by us, T1-weighted in vivo Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans of 11 extant anthropoid species were calculated by-voxel from the MRI and the raw data from RAS Study directly compared to our sample. Phylogenetic Generalized Least-Squares (PGLS) regression and trait-mapping using Blomberg's K (kappa) tested the correlation between HV and TLV accounting for anthropoid phylogeny, while bootstrapped PGLS regressions tested difference in slopes and intercepts between monkey and ape subsamples.

Results

PGLS regressions indicated statistically significant correlations (r2 < 0.99; p ≤ 0.0001) between TLV and HV with moderate influence from phylogeny (K ≤ 0.42). Bootstrapped PGLS regression did not show statistically significant differences in slopes between monkeys and apes but did for intercepts. In our sample, human TLV was not larger than expected for anthropoids.

Discussion

Updated imaging, increased sample size and advanced statistical analyses did not find statistically significant results that modern humans possessed a disproportionately large temporal lobe volume compared to the general anthropoid trend. This has important implications for human and non-human primate brain evolution.  相似文献
