Cranial suture morphology of Lystrosaurus and the generalized dicynodont Oudenodon was investigated to determine the strain environment during mastication, which in turn may indicate a difference in cranial function between the two taxa. Finite element (FE) analysis indicated that less strain accumulated in the cranium of Lystrosaurus during orthal bite simulations than in Oudenodon. Despite the overall difference in strain magnitude, moderate to high FE‐predicted strain accumulated in similar areas of the cranium of both taxa. The suture morphology in these cranial regions of Lystrosaurus and Oudenodon was investigated further by examination of histological sections and supplemented by observations of serial sections and computed tomography (CT) scans. The predominant type of strain from selected blocks of finite elements that contain sutures was determined, enabling comparison of suture morphology to strain type. Drawing from strain‐suture correlations established in extant taxa, the observed patterns of sutural morphology for both dicynodonts were used to deduce cranial function. The moderate to high compressive and tensile strain experienced by the infraorbital bar, zygomatic arch, and postorbital bar of Oudenodon and Lystrosaurus may have been decreased by small adjustive movements at the scarf sutures in those regions. Disparities in cranial suture morphology between the two taxa may reflect differences in cranial function. For instance, the tongue and groove morphology of the postorbital‐parietal suture in Oudenodon could have withstood the higher FE‐predicted tensile strain in the posterior skull roof. The scarf premaxilla‐nasal suture of Lystrosaurus provided an additional region of sutural mobility in the anterior surface of the snout, suggesting that Lystrosaurus may have employed a different biting regime than Oudenodon. The morphology of several sutures sampled in this study correlated with the FE‐predicted strain, although other cranial functional hypotheses remain to be tested. J. Evidence previously cited for the aquatic nature of the Triassic mammal‐like reptile Lystrosaurus is reviewed. It is concluded that this evidence does not constitute a convincing case.

General adaptations of aquatic tetrapods are reviewed and applied to the morphology of Lystrosaurus, in order to determine whether aquatic adaptations not previously sought in Lystrosaurus are present It is concluded that few or any such adaptations are present. Such as are, for example a widened knee and flared scapula blade, are as compatible with a digging function, as with swimming.

Nevertheless, the distinctive nature of the skull and to a lesser extent the postcranial skeleton of Lystrosaurus stands out, and several features require functional interpretation. These include: a downwardly‐directed and elongated snout, a short and high temporal region, a pear‐shaped external nasal opening bounded by a rugose ridge, slight dorsal flaring of the scapula, a powerful forelimb and wide knee joint These are dealt with elsewhere (King and Cluver, 1991).  相似文献

Certain distinctive features of the skull and postcranial skeleton of Lystrosaurus are discussed. The mechanics of the skull are re‐evaluated and it is concluded that the skull was modified relative to Permian forms to produce a bigger bite force and more vertical component of the adductor muscles, while preserving a wide gape. A zone of weakness, acting as a shock absorption system, was present in the premaxillary‐nasal region of the skull. Antero‐posterior movement of the lower jaw had been reduced. It is concluded that the skull was used to crush resistant plant matter.

The external nasal opening presents no evidence for a valvular structure, but may have housed a nasal gland.

The flared scapula produced a slightly greater mechanical advantage in the limb protractors and retractors.

The manus was short and broad, suitable for digging, but the claws were flat and rounded.

The wide knee‐joint indicated powerful foot‐moving muscles.

The palaeoenvironment of the Lystrosaurus‐Thrinaxodon Assemblage Zone is examined. It was probably drier than usually described. The fauna contained many terrestrial elements.

Lystrosaurus was probably a fully terrestrial animal which may have excavated burrows for itself, but was not a committed burrower like Cistecephalus.  相似文献

The structure and function of the nasal conchae of extant reptiles, birds, and mammals are reviewed, and the relationships to endothermy of the mammalian elements are examined. Reptilian conchae are relatively simple, recurved structures, which bear primarily sensory (olfactory) epithelium. Conversely, the conchae, or turbinates, of birds and mammals are considerably more extensive and complex, and bear, in addition, nonsensory (respiratory) epithelium. Of the mammalian turbinates, only the exclusively respiratory maxilloturbinal has a clear functional relationship with endothermy, as it reduces desiccation associated with rapid and continuous pulmonary ventilation. The other mammalian turbinates principally retain the primitive, olfactory function of the nasal conchae. The maxilloturbinates are the first reliable morphological indicator of endothermy that can be used in the fossil record. In fossil mammals and mammallike reptiles, the presence and function of turbinates are most readily revealed by the ridges by which they attach to the walls of the nasal cavity. Ridges for olfactory turbinals are located posterodorsally, away from the main flow of respiratory air, whereas those of the respiratory maxilloturbinals are situated in the anterolateral portion of the nasal passage, directly in the path of respired air. The maxilloturbinal is also characterized by its proximity to the opening of the nasolacrimal canal. Posterodorsal ridges, for olfactory turbinals, have long been recognized in many mammallike reptiles, including early forms such as pelycosaurs. However, ridges for respiratory turbinals have not been identified previously in this group. In this paper, the presence of anterolateral ridges, which most likely supported respiratory turbinals, is reported in the primitive therocephalian Glanosuchus and in several cynodonts. The presence of respiratory turbinals in these advanced mammallike reptiles suggests that the evolution of “mammalian” oxygen consumption rates may have begun as early as the Late Permian and developed in parallel in therocephalians and cynodonts. Full mammalian endothermy may have taken as much as 40 to 50 million yr to develop.  相似文献

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) released by neutrophils have been suggested to play an important role in cancer development. Since the mechanisms underlying this effect in the respiratory tract are still unclear, we evaluated DNA damage induced by neutrophils in respiratory tract epithelial cells in vitro and in vivo. For in vitro studies, rat lung epithelial cells (RLE) were co-incubated with activated neutrophils, neutrophil-conditioned medium, or hydrogen peroxide. For in vivo studies, we considered the human nose as a target organ, comparing neutrophilic inflammation in the nasal lavage fluid with the oxidative DNA lesion 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in epithelial cells obtained by nasal brush. Our in vitro data show that human neutrophils are able to induce both 8-OHdG and strand breaks in DNA from RLE cells. Our data also suggest that DNA damage induced by neutrophils is inhibited when neutrophil-derived H2O2 is consumed by myeloperoxidase. In contrast, in the nose no association between neutrophil numbers and 8-OHdG was found. Therefore, it remains unclear whether neutrophils pose a direct genotoxic risk for the respiratory tract epithelium during inflammation, and more in vivo studies are needed to elucidate the possible association between neutrophils and genotoxicity in the lung.  相似文献

Anomodontia was the most successful herbivorous clade of the mammalian stem lineage (non‐mammalian synapsids) during the late Permian and Early Triassic. Among anomodonts, Dicynodontia stands apart because of the presence of an osseous beak that shows evidence of the insertion of a cornified sheath, the ramphotheca. In this study, fourteen anomodont specimens were microCT‐scanned and their trigeminal canals reconstructed digitally to understand the origin and evolution of trigeminal nerve innervation of the ramphotheca. We show that the pattern of innervation of the anomodont “beak” is more similar to that in chelonians (the nasopalatine branch is enlarged and innervates the premaxillary part of the ramphotheca) than in birds (where the nasopalatine and maxillary branches play minor roles). The nasopalatine branch is noticeably enlarged in the beak‐less basal anomodont Patranomodon, suggesting that this could be an anomodont or chainosaur synapomorphy. Our analyses suggest that the presence or absence of tusks and postcanine teeth are often accompanied by corresponding variations of the rami innervating the caniniform process and the alveolar region, respectively. The degree of ossification of the canal for the nasal ramus of the ophthalmic branch also appears to correlate with the presence of a nasal boss. The nasopalatine canal is absent from the premaxilla in the Bidentalia as they uniquely show a large plexus formed by the internal nasal branch of the maxillary canal instead. The elongated shape of this plexus in Lystrosaurus supports the hypothesis that the rostrum evolved as an elongation of the subnarial region of the snout. Finally, the atrophied and variable aspect of the trigeminal canals in Myosaurus supports the hypothesis that this genus had a reduced upper ramphotheca.  相似文献

The intranasal route is one of the main routes of Mycobacterium leprae infection and there is paucity of information regarding the mode of spread of the pattern. The adherence of M.leprae to the nasal mucosa, its trapping within the sinuses of the head, and its fate after entry into the host was studied using mouse model. A comparison of the adherence profile of M. leprae and Mycobacterium tuberculosis showed that while larger numbers of M. tuberculosis were demonstrated within lungs, greater numbers of M.leprae were present within the sinuses of the head. Adherence of M.leprae to the nasal mucosa was dependent on surface integrity since opsonization and heat killing resulted in decreased numbers of M.leprae in the nasal sinuses and a greater amount entering the lungs. The adherence appeared to the independent of the viability of the bacilli, as similar numbers of formalin-fixed, rifampicin-treated and viable M.leprae entered the lungs in the initial stages. However the numbers of rifampicin-treated M. leprae in the nasal sinuses were 12-fold lower than the numbers of viable M.leprae. These results indicated that both viability and surface integrity were important in the entry of M.leprae and it’s consequent dissemination.  相似文献

A new procolophonid reptile, Kitchingnathus untabeni n. gen. et n. sp., is described from the uppermost strata of the Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone of the Karoo Basin, South Africa. The new taxon co-occurs with the well-known Procolophon trigoniceps. The most distinctive feature of the new taxon is the presence of numerous small bicuspid molariforms in both the maxilla and the dentary. A phylogenetic analysis indicates that Kitchingnathus occupies a basal position among procolophonids. Character optimisation suggests that bicuspid teeth were acquired independently by the new taxon, and originated twice in procolophonid evolution.  相似文献

Dicynodonts were the most diverse and abundant herbivorous therapsids of the Permo‐Triassic. They include Lystrosaurus, one of the few taxa known to survive the end‐Permian extinction and the most abundant tetrapod during the Early Triassic postextinction recovery. Explanations for the success of Lystrosaurus and other dicynodonts remain controversial. This study presents an assessment of dicynodont growth patterns using bone histology, with special focus on taxa associated with the end‐Permian extinction event. Bone histological analysis reveals a high cortical thickness throughout the clade, perhaps reflecting a phylogenetic constraint. Growth rings are absent early in ontogeny, and combined with high vascular density, indicate rapid, sustained growth up to the subadult stage. Extraordinarily enlarged vascular channels are present in the midcortex of many dicynodonts, including adults, and may have facilitated a more efficient assimilation of nutrients and rapid bone growth compared to other therapsids. Both increased channel density and enlarged vascular channels evolved at or near the base of major radiations of dicynodonts, implying that the changes in growth and life history they represent may have been key to the success of dicynodonts. Furthermore, this exceptionally rapid growth to adulthood may have contributed to the survival of Lystrosaurus during the end‐Permian extinction and its dominance during the postextinction recovery period. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 160 , 341–365.  相似文献

Although Cave (1987) accepts the theory that the Meckelian ossicles originate from the maxilloturbinals, evidence given in his study in fact supports the opinion of Klima and van Bree (1985) that the Meckelian ossicles arise from elements of the nasal floor, solum nasi, of the embryonic nasal capsule, in particular from the lamina transversalis anterior and the cartilago paraseptalis.  相似文献

The mechanism of nosocomial respiratory infections caused by MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in geriatric patients was investigated. Seriously ill patients (SIP) undergoing naso-gastric tube feeding or intravenous hyperalimentation and moderately ill patients (MIP) who were orally fed, were examined for their colonization and infection by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in the respiratory tract. Colonization of MRSA in the upper respiratory tract in SIP was from six to ten times higher than that in MIP and was associated with a high incidence of MRSA pulmonary infections. In vitro S. aureus adherence to nasal or oropharyngeal cells demonstrated that bacteria binding to nasal cells was higher, which probably can be interpreted as an elevated occurrence of S. aureus colonization in the nasal cavity than in the throat. The binding activity of MRSA was not superior to that of MSSA (methicillin-sensitive S. aureus). Though MRSA binding to the nasal cells from SIP was not higher than those from MIP, MRSA colonization in the upper respiratory tract was more frequently seen in SIP (P < 0.01). A higher incidence of total infectious episodes (P < 0.02-0.001) and more frequent use of antibiotics (P < 0.02-0.001), which were potent against MSSA might be the basis for selection of MRSA in these patients. In fact, the rate of MRSA colonization on the skin (pressure sores) was also higher in SIP (P < 0.01). A low nutritional state in SIP (P < 0.01-0.02) might also be associated with MRSA colonization. The present results indicate that the high frequency of infections, antibiotic administration, MRSA skin colonization and low nutritional condition, are enhancing factors of MRSA acquisition in the respiratory tract for SIP undergoing artificial feeding, in a geriatric hospital.  相似文献

Kuciel, M., ?uwa?a, K., Jakubowski, M. 2011. A new type of fish olfactory organ structure in Periophthalmus barbarus (Oxudercinae). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 92 : 276–280. The study describes a new type of olfactory organ structure in teleost fish, the Atlantic mudskipper Periophthalmus barbarus (Gobiidae). The nasal cavity in this species consists of a tube‐like elongated canal widening to a chamber‐like sac in the preorbital part of the head. The olfactosensory epithelium (studied by light and electron microscopy) occurs only in the form of islets located along the medial wall of the tube‐like part of the organ. The presence of a chamber‐like sac without an olfactory rosette or olfactosensory epithelium suggests that a mechanism allowing water circulation is in operation.  相似文献

Ozone, a strong oxidant present in summer smog, is thought to primarily react with antioxidant molecules found in the epithelial lining fluid of the respiratory tract. In humans, as much as 40% of inhaled ozone can be removed in the nasal cavity where the major extracellular antioxidant has been identified as uric acid. The present study was undertaken to examine urate/oxidant interactions in human nasal lavage fluid following in vitro exposure to ozone at concentrations relevant to the U.K. Lavage fluid was collected from 8 volunteers using a modified Foley catheter which permits prolonged contact of isotonic saline with the anterior nasal cavity. Nasal lavage samples in multiwell plates were exposed to ozone at concentrations of 50, 100 and 250 ppb. Samples were removed at intervals from 15 to 240 min following exposure and assayed for uric acid depletion. Uric acid concentrations in the nasal lavage were found to fall from 8.52 (time zero) to 3.99 μM, 0.05 and 0.07 μM after 240 min at 50, 100 and 250 ppb ozone respectively. At a non-environmentally relevant ozone concentration of 1000 ppb, uric acid was completely depleted after 60 min. Regression analysis showed a linear correlation between rate of loss of urate and ozone concentration (R2 = 0.97). A novel, non-invasive technique is described to investigate antioxidant compromise and its importance in individual subjects. We conclude that uric acid in nasal lavage samples is scavenged by ozone in a dose and time dependant manner.  相似文献

The transferability of the tetracycline (TC) resistance gene tet(M) from marine bacteria to human enteric bacteria was examined by a filter-mating method. Vibrio spp., Lactococcus garvieae, Bacillus spp., Lactobacillus sp., and Paenibacillus sp. were used as donors, and Escherichia coli JM109 and Enterococcus faecalis JH2-2 were used as recipients. The combination of Vibrio spp. and E. coli resulted in 5/68 positive transconjugants with a transfer rate of 10−7 to 10−3; however, no transfer was observed with E. faecalis. In case of L. garvieae and E. faecalis, 6/6 positive transconjugants were obtained with a transfer rate of 10−6 to 10−5; however, no transfer was observed with E. coli. The tet(M) gene of Bacillus, Lactobacillus, and Paenibacillus were not transferred to either E. coli or E. faecalis. tet(M) transfer was confirmed in positive E. coli and E. faecalis transconjugants by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern hybridization. All the donor strains did not harbor plasmids, while they all harbored transposon Tn916. In the transconjugants, the transposon was not detected by PCR, suggesting the possible transfer of tet(M) from the marine bacterial chromosome to the recipient chromosome. This is the first report to show that tet(M) can be transferred from marine bacteria to human enteric bacteria in a species-specific manner.  相似文献

Acoustic signals for mating are important traits that could drive population differentiation and speciation. Ecology may play a role in acoustic divergence through direct selection (e.g., local adaptation to abiotic environment), constraint of correlated traits (e.g., acoustic traits linked to another trait under selection), and/or interspecific competition (e.g., character displacement). However, genetic drift alone can also drive acoustic divergence. It is not always easy to differentiate the role of ecology versus drift in acoustic divergence. In this study, we tested the role of ecology and drift in shaping geographic variation in the advertisement calls of Microhyla fissipes. We examined three predictions based on ecological processes: (1) the correlation between temperature and call properties across M. fissipes populations; (2) the correlation between call properties and body size across M. fissipes populations; and (3) reproductive character displacement (RCD) in call properties between M. fissipes populations that are sympatric with and allopatric to a congener M. heymonsi. To test genetic drift, we examined correlations among call divergence, geographic distance, and genetic distance across M. fissipes populations. We recorded the advertisement calls from 11 populations of M. fissipes in Taiwan, five of which are sympatrically distributed with M. heymonsi. We found geographic variation in both temporal and spectral properties of the advertisement calls of M. fissipes. However, the call properties were not correlated with local temperature or the callers' body size. Furthermore, we did not detect RCD. By contrast, call divergence, geographic distance, and genetic distance between M. fissipes populations were all positively correlated. The comparisons between phenotypic Qst (Pst) and Fst values did not show significant differences, suggesting a role of drift. We concluded that genetic drift, rather than ecological processes, is the more likely driver for the geographic variation in the advertisement calls of M. fissipes.  相似文献

Magnolia (disjuncts), however, have similar chemical profiles. A molecular phylogeny of Magnoliaceae was constructed to reveal phylogenetic relationships of taxa by sequencing the trnK intron (including the matK coding region), psbA-trnH, and atpB-rbcL intergenic spacer regions of chloroplast DNA from 25 Magnolia, two Michelia, and two Liriodendron taxa. The psbA-trnH spacer region showed twice the sequence divergence (0.0157) of the trnK intron (0.0073) or the matK coding region (0.0077). The strict consensus tree constructed from the combined data set (ca. 3,700 bp) indicated the genus Magnolia was polyphyletic containing Michelia species as ingroup. The clade of Magnolia liliifera var. obovata, M. coco, and M. delavayi formed the first branch. Among the remaining species, two additional large clades were recognized, i.e., one comprised of American evergreen Magnolia species and another of subgenus Yulania. The relationship among sect. Rytidospermum taxa was not clearly resolved. Parsimonious mapping of the floral scent chemical characters was performed onto the molecular phylogenetic tree to discuss evolutionary trends of the floral scent chemistries. Summary Numerous studies suggest the capacity of storage mites (S.M.) to induce IgE-mediated reactions but their etiopathogenetic role in allergic respiratory diseases has not yet been established. Therefore we examined 283 patients affected by rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma resident in urban and rural areas who underwent skin tests and a RAST with a group of allergens including S.M. (Acarus s., Lepidoglyphus d., Glycyphagus d., Tyrophagus p.).The incidence of patients showing a positive reaction to S.M. was evaluated according to their place of residence and work. 48 patients were selected who resulted positive to mites; 28 of them resulted positive to S.M. and pyroglyphid and 5 to S.M. only. The relationship between skin tests and RAST for S.M. positive patients resulted high forL.d. (70%),G.d. (75%),T.p. (80%) and low forA.s. (58%). In RAST positive subjects cross-reactivity withD. ptero was evaluated:A.s. (70%),L.d. (80%),T.p. (75.4%),G.d. (78.9%).Dwelling and place of work of skin and RAST positive patients revealed an equal distribution between urban and rural populations for S.M.; however, while in urban areas the association with pyroglyphid mites is constant, the rare single sensitivities are found only in rural areas and in farmers. From our data it emerges that the allergological diagnostics must use S.M. when considering respiratory diseases of professionally exposed subjects and residents of given areas. An interpretation of their etiologic role, given the frequent association with pyroglyphid mites, will demand further diagnostic data and an identification and purification of the clinically relevant allergens.  相似文献
