Ingestion of soft faeces derived from caecal contents, caecotrophy, in herbivorous small mammals is considered an adaptation to the metabolic disadvantage of small body size, especially when feeding on diets of low quality. We investigated daily activity patterns in captive Brandt’s voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii), including feeding, locomotion, caecotrophy, and defaecation, by continuous 24 h visual observation; and estimated the contribution of soft faeces ingestion (caecotrophy) to intake of protein and energy. Brandt’s voles ingested 68.8 ± 7.4 fecal pellets per day, averaging 17 ± 2% of total faeces produced. The amount of faeces ingested did not differ between female and male voles or between night and day time. All animals showed average 3 h ultradian cycles in behaviour during the course of the day and night. The contributions of caecotrophy to the dietary intake of crude protein and metabolizable energy were estimated respectively as 9 and 8% on a high-protein, easily digested commercial rabbit pellet diet. However, the importance of caecotrophy to the field voles is likely to be higher on a natural diet of lower nutrient density. The rhythm of caecotrophy in voles depended mainly on the rhythm of the colonic separation mechanism in the proximal colon and passage in the distal colon, and may be regulated by feeding and other activity rhythms. Ultradian rhythms in caecotrophy helped to minimise potential conflicts in utilizing the gut, especially in balancing the caecal fermentation and salvaging nutrients contained in caecal bacteria.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to assess, through consumption and utilization of natural food measurements, whether mulberry cultivars, Morus spp., could be recommended to rear the silkworm, Bombyx mori L., in a commercial scale. The mulberry cultivars Miura (standard), Korin and Tailandesa and the hybrids FM 3/3, FM 86, SK 1 and SK 4 were tested. Seventy five fifth-instar commercial hybrid larvae were individualized in gerbox? unities and maintained in a rearing room (25 ± 3oC and 80 ± 10% RH).The mulberry leaves of each of the five cultivars used to feed the silkworm larvae were submitted to bromatological analysis. The dry weight of larvae at the beginning and at the end of the fifth instar, the food consumed and the feces eliminated were recorded to determine the following indexes: relative consumption rate (RCR), relative metabolic rate (RMR), relative growth rate (RGR), approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD), metabolic cost (MC). The bromatological composition analysis of mulberry leaf cultivars revealed that the hybrid SK 4 presented superior nutritional quality compared to the standard cultivar Miura, due to its higher content in crude protein and ethereal extract, and lower detergent fiber content. The hybrid SK 4 was the most adequate food to the silkworm larvae because it was ingested in small amounts, thus providing good digestibility to the larvae, low metabolic cost, good growth rate and one of the highest efficiencies in the conversion of the ingested food and ingested and digested in biomass.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Endosymbiotic algae from Paramecium bursaria when added to the culture medium are ingested by Chlorella -bearing P. bursaria at a rate of 2,000 algae/organism/day. That the ingested algae are digested and assimilated by the ciliates is suggested by the more rapid growth of Paramecium when algae are added to the medium ( G = 40 hr with algae compared to 190 hr without). The digestion by the ciliates of exogenous algae contrasts with the survival of these algae under normal growth conditions. It is suggested that the protection of the endogenous algae is related to their location in peripheral perialgal vacuoles.  相似文献

The feed intake, growth, oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion of juvenile Arctic charr were measured over period of four weeks at different temperatures which were either constant (11.0, 14.4, 17.7 °C) or fluctuated daily (14.3 ± 1 °C). Maximum feed intake was estimated to occur at 14.3 °C, while oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion were highest at the highest temperature, and growth rate was estimated to be highest at 13.9 °C. Feed conversion efficiency was estimated to be highest at 13.2 °C, where over 62.7% of ingested energy was allocated to growth. Metabolic rate accounted for 16–30% of ingested energy and nitrogen excretion was under 3% of ingested energy. The nitrogen budget was under similar thermal influences to the energy budget. Thermal fluctuation increased metabolic rate, but not feed intake, leading to a reduction in feed conversion efficiency under fluctuating temperature conditions.  相似文献

Fifth-instar larvae of Erinnyis ello feeding on Euphorbia pulcherrima leaves display the following rates and efficiencies: relative growth rate, 0.3 mg/day per mg; relative consumption rate, 2.6 mg/day per mg; approximate digestibility, 45%; efficiency of conversion of digested food, 25%. Chemical determinations performed on the leaves ingested and on the faeces expelled led to the determination of the approximate digestibilities (%) of the major constituents of leaves, as follows: soluble protein, 49; insoluble protein, 87; total lipids, 63; sucrose, 100; pectin, 0; hemicellulose, 52; starch, 88, cellulose, 0. Values (μg) for the daily absorption of minerals by a 3-g (fresh wt) E. ello larva were: K, 11,000; Ca, 5000; Mg, 2100; Cu, 3.3; Zn, 33; Fe, 110, The data suggest that the physiological role of the E. ello midgut β-fructosidase is to hydrolyze the major leaf carbohydrate sucrose, which is not efficiently digested by E. ello midgut α-glucosidase, whereas the physiological role of E. ello midgut β-glucosidase is to accomplish the final digestion of the hemicellulosic β-d-glycans.  相似文献

Larvae of Diacrisia casignetum Kollar were reared in groups of 100, 50 and 10 on fresh sunflower leaves at 27 ± 1°C temperature, 75 ± 5% r.h. and 12 h light each day. Rates of feeding, excretion and weight gain increased with age of the larva and were greatest in the sixth instar. Differences in these rates attributable to density were statistically heterogeneous (P < 0.001) whereas, of those attributable to instar, the weight gain was significant (P < 0.10). The second-instar larvae had highest levels of protein and carbohydrates in the body tissues; and the sixth-instar larvae had, the least. The pattern of protein assimilation in various instars was similar to that of glycogen except that proportional differences in the latter were pronounced in fifth and sixth instars. Consumption index, growth rate and approximate digestibility were high in the early instars whereas efficiencies of conversion of ingested and digested food were high in advanced instars. Food utilization, as reflected by efficiency of conversion of ingested and digested values in advanced instars, indicated the amount needed for maintenance decreased and more energy was left for growth and reproduction.  相似文献

High‐resolution leaf growth is rarely studied despite its importance as a metric for plant performance and resource use efficiency. This is in part due to methodological challenges. Here, we present a method for in situ leaf growth measurements in a natural environment. We measured instantaneous leaf growth on a mature Avicennia marina subsp. australasica tree over several weeks. We measured leaf expansion by taking time‐lapse images and analysing them using marker tracking software. A custom‐made instrument was designed to enable long‐term field studies. We detected a distinct diel growth pattern with leaf area shrinkage in the morning and leaf expansion in the afternoon and at night. On average, the observed daily shrinkage was 37% of the net growth. Most of the net growth occurred at night. Diel leaf area shrinkage and recovery continued after growth cessation. The amount of daily growth was negatively correlated with shrinkage, and instantaneous leaf growth and shrinkage were correlated with changes in leaf turgor. We conclude that, at least in this tree species, instantaneous leaf growth patterns are very strongly linked to, and most likely driven by, leaf water relations, suggesting decoupling of short‐term growth patterns from carbon assimilation.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to examine the relationship between the particle size of chitin and its digestibility in the small insectivorous prosimian Galago senegalensis. In the first set of experiments, four animals were fed a 25% chitin diet with the chitin particles less than or equal to 60-mesh (0.250 mm maximum diameter). On average, the animals digested 22.5 ± 2.2 percent of the ingested chitin. In the second set of experiments, the four animals were fed a 25% chitin diet with the chitin particles ground to ≤ 40- and ≥ 45-mesh (between 0.425 and 0.325 mm). On average, the animals digested 2.75 ± 1.38 percent of the ingested chitin. There was no significant variation between the performance of any of the animals on either the 60- or 40–45-mesh trials. In all instances, however, each animal digested significantly more of the 60-mesh chitin and the 40–45-mesh chitin. These experiments demonstrate the importance of masticatory efficiency among small mammals for improving the digestibility of foods such as insects which contain high proportions of chitin. They also suggest why insectivorous and folivorous primates have certain convergent dental specializations for finely grinding their foods. Both leaves and insects contain relatively indigestible structural carbohydrates. These substances are much more completely digested when the surface area to volume ratio of the swallowed material is increased. The masticatory efficiency of frugivorous primates is much lower since the constituents of these foods are relatively completely digested irrespective of the fineness of grinding.  相似文献

A factorial experiment tested the effects of varying concentrations of the flavonol rutin and daytime temperatures of 20 and 30°C on growth, molting and food utilization efficiencies of third instar tobacco hornworms (Manduca sexta (L.)). Cool temperature prolonged both the growth (=feeding) and non-feeding periods and consequently the relative consumption rates (RCR) and relative growth rates (RGR). Temperature had no impact on the amount of food consumed and the utilization indices of efficiency of conversion of ingested food and efficiency of conversion of digested food to larval biomass. But rutin was more concentrated in the frass of the larvae at the warm temperature. With increasing levels of rutin in the diet, the efficiency of conversion of ingested food tended to decline. Rutin reduced RCR and RGR. At the cool temperature, rutin increased the time spent in the first portion of the non-feeding period disproportionately. Analysis of growth rate intervals within the growth period indicated that at the cool temperature rutin had no discernible impact over the first half of the growth period, during which developmental competence to molt is likely achieved. Overall, these results indicate an overlap in the growth and molting phases and suggest that rutin interferes with physiological processes at the time of molt initiation, with these effects magnified at a cool temperature.  相似文献

The diet and feeding methods of Avocets Recurvirostra avosetta using the most common feeding strategy (Normal Feeding Strategy) on emerged intertidal areas in the Tagus estuary, Portugal, were studied during two winters.
Avocets using the Normal Feeding Strategy fed non-selectively in the top 20 mm of sediment, ingesting prey bigger than a minimum threshold dimension of around 1.5 mm. Some mud was also ingested whilst feeding. Prey were captured by the mechanical action of the bill, and the estimated number of items captured per sweep was quite high (mean = 10.9 worms). Most of the biomass ingested by Avocets consisted of oligochaetes, spionid worms, Capitella capitata and small ragworms Nereis diversicolor.
The estimated intake rate of Avocets suggested that the energy ingested during daylight hours did not represent a significant percentage of the daily requirements. Thus, feeding on emerged intertidal areas is probably a secondary component of their daily gross food intake, unless night feeding yields higher intake rates due to increased prey availability.  相似文献

Goldfish were placed on a daily light cycle of 12 h light and 12 h darkness for 18 days or longer. The visual cells and pigment epithelium of the retina were then examined by microscopy at many intervals throughout the cycle. Goldfish rods and cones follow a rhythmic pattern in eliminating packets of photosensitive membranes from their outer segments. Rods shed membranes early in the light period. The detached membranes are ingested by pigment epithelial cells or by ameboid phagocytes, which degrade them during the remainder of the light period. Cones discard membranes from the ends of their outer segments early in the dark period. During the next several hours, this debris is digested by the pigment epithelium or by ameboid phagocytes. Thus, the disposal phase of the outer-segment renewal process is similar in rods and cones, but is displaced in time by about 12 h. There is evidence that this daily rhythm of membrane disposal in rods and cones is a general property of vertebrate visual cells.  相似文献

在温度(29±1)℃和相对湿度75%±5%条件下,研究了2种改进人工饲料和天然饲料椰子幼果对红脉穗螟Tirathaba rufivena Walker生长发育、繁殖力和营养的影响。结果表明:与天然饲料相比,用改进人工饲料饲养的红脉穗螟幼虫生长发育速度、幼虫存活率、蛹重及产卵量均提高;幼虫相对生长率(RGR)、食物利用率(ECI)及食物转化率(ECD)均显著提高,而相对取食量(RCR)则显著降低。表明红脉穗螟幼虫对2种人工饲料有很好的适应性,可用于大量饲养。  相似文献

Explants of the Indo-Pacific sponge Pseudosuberites aff. andrewsi were fed with the microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana and Rhodomonas sp. It was microscopically observed that these algae were ingested and digested by the sponge cells, suggesting that they were consumed by the sponges. The algae were further used for two growth experiments with five explants of P. aff. andrewsi and four explants of P. andrewsi. Growth was measured as the increase in projected body area. The explants showed considerable growth (up to 730% in 54 days for P. aff. andrewsi and up to 680% in 22 days for P. andrewsi), which is much higher than previously reported growth rates for sponges. Growth started after a stationary phase of 5–20 days in which the projected body area did not increase. The growth of P. aff. andrewsi appeared to be linear and was inhibited at the end of the experiment. Two explants of P. andrewsi showed exponential growth instead of linear growth. Hence, no general statements about the growth kinetics of these sponges can be made at this time. However, the high growth rates found in this study suggest a promising future for cultivation of sponges in closed systems.  相似文献

The pattern of chick feeding of the British storm-petrel Hydrobates pelagicus in a Mediterranean colony was examined by weighing chicks at 24-h intervals on different days during the nestling period. In order to calibrate daily mass increments (NET) against number of feedings, daily mass changes of chicks were regressed upon the sum of positive mass increments recorded overnight (SUM) during four nights. The average meal size delivered to chicks per night by one parent was 3.5 ß 1.3 g or 12% of adult weight. This was insufficient for sustaining constant chick mass during a day. On average 85% of chicks were fed each night, and the mean interval between feeds was 1.2 ß 0.5 nights. Nightly feeding frequencies differed among days, but this night-to-night variation was not related to meteorological conditions. Both food requirements necessary for chick body maintenance (zero-growth) and meal size were relatively constant for ages up to 59 days. However, feeding frequency decreased throughout the fledging period, accounting for agespecific variation in growth rates until fledging. Food requirement and feeding patterns at Benidorm were different from North Atlantic colonies. None the less, growth patterns were almost identical, suggesting adjustment to maintain chick body mass at a determined level, as food delivery to nestling appears to be regulated to chicks'nutritional requirements.  相似文献

Based on the finding that Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) has direct negative effects on larvae of Chrysoperla carnea, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate its toxicity to the adults. While the ingestion of GNA dissolved in an artificial diet did not affect adult longevity, there were concentration-dependent negative effects on the pre-oviposition period, daily fecundity and total fecundity (number of eggs laid). When GNA was ingested by larvae of C. carnea, it caused a significant extension of larval development time. Adults that had emerged from GNA-fed larvae did not differ from those that developed from control larvae in terms of adult fresh weight, pre-oviposition period and daily or total fecundity. However, fertility (proportion of hatching eggs) was significantly decreased in adults raised from GNA-treated larvae. Western blots revealed that GNA ingested by larvae of C. carnea was partly transferred to the adult stage and was subsequently excreted or digested within a few days. Our toxicity studies (Tier-1 tests) clearly established a hazard of GNA to adult C. carnea when administered to larvae or adults at high concentrations. Implications of these toxicity data for the non-target risk assessment of GNA-expressing transgenic crops are discussed.  相似文献

研究了取食不同水分含量桑叶对二化性家蚕(CSR3×CSR6)5龄幼虫的影响。实验设嫩叶(水分含量80%~85%)、半成熟叶(水分含量65%~70%)和成熟叶(水分含量55%~60%)3个不同处理。采用标准重量分析法分析和计算各种生长、营养和营养效率指数。结果表明,在取食较高水分含量桑叶的处理中,营养指数(包括取食量、消化量和近似消化率等)和营养效率指数(包括食物利用率和转化率等)均显著较高,但不同处理中消化食物向茧壳的转化率及产生每克茧壳所需食物消化量差异不明显。结论是取食水分含量高的桑树嫩叶有助于提高家蚕的取食和营养。  相似文献

Seasonal energy intake and digestion of bamboo by red pandas were measured in energy balance trials at the field station at an altitude of 3,100 m in Yele Natural Reserve, Mianning County of Sichuan Province, Peoples Republic of China. Two‐week trials were conducted at monthly intervals by feeding animals with only natural bamboo browse, Bashania spanostachya, from May to November 1995. Results demonstrated that energy intake, digestible energy, and digestibility differed significantly among seasons and diets. Energy digestibilities were high in summer‐autumn, intermediate in spring, and low in winter. These variations correlated positively with the nutrient contents of bamboo. The daily metabolic energy requirement measured varied from 2,603.3 kJ in the spring to 3,139.8 kJ in the summer‐autumn to 2,740.8 kJ in the winter. The results also showed that shoots were more easily digested than leaves and exhibited the highest digestibility. Restricted by the capacity of digestive tracts, red pandas poorly utilized the energy provided by bamboo as indicated by the lower energy digestibility (averaging 26.47% for leaves and 44.08% for shoots among the seasons). To fulfill their daily energy requirements, red pandas ingested a large amount of energy from bamboo leaves, which varied from 10,145.8 kJ in the spring, 12,045.1 kJ in the summer‐autumn, and 12,276.9 kJ in the winter to maximize the rate of energy intake. The metabolism of wild-type Arabidopsis thaliana L. and its mutant TC265 were compared in order to reveal the role of the chloroplast glucose transporter. Plants were grown in a 12-h photoperiod. From 20 to 40 days after germination, starch per gram fresh weight of shoot in the mutant was four times that in the wild type. The extent of this difference did not alter during this period. Stereological analysis showed that the chloroplasts in the mutant were larger than those in the wild type; the thylakoids appeared to be distorted by the high starch content. [U-14C]Glucose and [U-14C]glycerol were supplied, separately, to excised leaves in the dark. [U-14C]Glucose was a good precursor of sucrose in the wild type and mutant; [U-14C]glycerol was a poor precursor of sucrose in both. The distribution of 14C in the wild type was used to calculate that the net flux was from hexose monophosphates to triose phosphates, not vice versa. During the first 4 h of the night the sugar content (75% sucrose, 20% glucose) of the leaves of the mutant dropped sharply, and at all times during the night it was less than that of the wild-type leaves. This drop in sugar coincided with a decrease in the rate of respiration. The growth rate of the mutant was less than that of the wild type. Addition of sucrose restored the rate of respiration at night and increased the rate of growth. It is argued that a major function of the glucose transporter in Arabidopsis chloroplasts is export of the products of starch breakdown that are destined for sucrose synthesis at night.We thank Professor C.R. 为了选育出在生产上具有推广价值的美洲黑杨Populus deltoides优良抗虫品系,本研究以分月扇舟蛾Clostera anastomosis 3龄幼虫为材料,以I-72杨为对照评价和分析了18个美洲黑杨无性系在实验室条件(28±1℃,RH 70%,16L∶8D)下的抗虫性,通过选择性和非选择性取食实验筛选出了11个具有较强抗性的无性系; 测定了美洲黑杨主要营养物质和次生代谢物质含量,研究了不同无性系对分月扇舟蛾体内保护酶和消化酶活性及对该虫生长发育和食物利用的影响。结果表明:美洲黑杨不同无性系抗性的大小与它们叶片中总酚含量呈明显正相关趋势; 抗性水平不同的无性系对分月扇舟蛾幼虫的生长发育和食物利用有不同的影响,表现在幼虫体重、每日体重增加量、相对生长率、近似消化率、食物利用率和食物转化率等主要生长发育指标的变化上,同时对分月扇舟蛾幼虫取食量和排粪量亦有不同的影响。结果说明,分月扇舟蛾对次生代谢物质的反应更为敏感,抗性无性系对分月扇舟蛾幼虫体内SOD和CAT酶活性有明显的激活作用。  相似文献
