Bouvet Island is one of the most isolated islands in the Southern Ocean and its marine benthic fauna has rarely been investigated and so is poorly known. This study adds 30 molluscan species to the previous faunal record of 16 species. During the expedition ANT XXI-2 of PFS Polarstern 25 species of shelled gastropods, 12 species of bivalves, 3 species of polyplacophorans and 1 species of solenogaster (Aplacophora) were collected at four sites around Bouvet Island in depths between 120 m and 550 m. High percentages of the species representing the shelled molluscan fauna of Bouvet Island are known from sub and high (continental) Antarctica.  相似文献

Twenty-seven species of benthic hydroids have been found in a small collection from off Bouvet Island (Antarctic Ocean). The material was obtained during the XXI/2 German Antarctic expedition with R.V. Polarstern 2003–2004. Of the 27 species collected, 21 were unknown from those waters. Consequently, the number of known species of benthic hydroids from the area has risen to 32, representing a high diversity location for this group in the Southern Ocean considering the sampling effort made. All species, including those previously known from Bouvet waters, are considered with respect to geographical distribution.The present work is an addition to the special issue “Macrobenthic studies at Bouvet island”, presenting work carried out from on board RV Polarstern in 2003/2004 and published in Polar Biology 29 (2006)  相似文献

Aim At the height of glaciations such as the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), benthic life on polar continental shelves was bulldozed off nearly all of the Antarctic shelf by grounded ice sheets. The origins of the current shelf benthos have become a subject of considerable debate. There are several possible sources for the current Antarctic shelf fauna, the first of which is the continental slope and deep sea of the Southern Ocean. The high levels of reported eurybathy for many Antarctic species are taken as evidence supporting this. A second possible source for colonists is the southern margins of other continents. Finally, shelves could have been recolonized from refugia on the continental shelves or slopes around Antarctica. The current study investigates whether the patchily rich and abundant biota that now occurs on the Antarctic continental shelf recolonized from refugia in situ or elsewhere. Location Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Methods We examined bryozoan samples of the BENDEX, ANDEEP III and SYSTCO expeditions, as well as the literature. Using similarity matrices (Sørensen coefficient), we assessed similarities of benthos sampled from around Antarctica. By assessing numbers of species shared between differing depths and adjacent shelf areas, we evaluated the origins of cheilostome bryozoan communities. Results Bryozoans decreased from 28, 6.5 and 0.3 colonies per trawl, and 0.16, 0.046 and 0.0026 colonies per cm2 of hard surface from shelf to slope to abyssal depths. We found little and no support for recolonization of the Weddell Sea shelf by bryozoans from the adjacent slope and abyss, in the scenario of LGM faunal wipe‐out. The Weddell Sea shelf bryozoan fauna was considerably more similar to those on other Antarctic shelves than to that of the adjacent (Weddell Sea) continental slope. The known bryozoan fauna of the Weddell Sea shelf is not a subset of the Weddell Sea slope or abyssal faunas. Main conclusions We consider that the composition of the current Weddell Sea bryozoan fauna is most easily explained by in situ survival. Thus we consider that at least some of the Weddell Sea fauna persisted throughout the LGM, although not necessarily at the same locations throughout, to recolonize the large area currently occupied.  相似文献

The present biogeographic study on the ophiuroid fauna from the Southern Ocean (SO) contains an updated checklist, based on a compilation of all the published information provided for the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions as well as the information available in SCAR-MarBIN database. Faunal composition and geographical and bathymetric distribution are included. So far, 219 species have been recorded, of which 126 are endemic to the SO, 76 are exclusive to Antarctic waters, and 30 are exclusive to sub-Antarctic waters. This study corroborated the circumpolar and eurybathic character of the ophiuroid fauna of the SO, but some differences are discussed when considering shelf and deep-sea fauna in the whole SO, or in the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions separately. The biogeographic affinities of 17 areas considered in the SO are revised, based on a presence/absence datamatrix of the 219 species. This similarity analysis shows three main groups, two of them including sub-Antarctic areas and one for Antarctic areas. The faunal movement patterns between the main geographical connections have been based on historical site records of each species. These movements have a level of faunal exchange that exceeds that of other Antarctic benthic groups. Such movements are mainly from Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions to the subtropical waters of South America, and from New Zealand and southern Australian waters to sub-Antarctic areas. In this context, the origin of the ophiuroid Antarctic fauna is discussed.  相似文献

Summary 75 taxa of Protozoa (18 flagellates, 9 naked rhizopods, 20 testate rhizopods and 28 ciliates) were found in 14 samples of mineral materials, peats, soils and guano collected from the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. The results confirm the existence of distinct natural communities of protozoan species related to the different classes of habitat in the sub-Antarctic and maritime Antarctic, but suggest that species characteristic of the maritime Antarctic also occur in the sub-Antarctic and species characteristic of bryophyte peats also occur in soils with angiosperm vegetation. The diversity of the fauna of different habitats can be related to degree of soil development and successional stage of associated vegetation. Comparison of the data on the testate rhizopod fauna of South Georgia with those from other sub-Antarctic locations shows a clear trend of faunal pauperization with latitude.  相似文献

Mega-epibenthic diversity was analysed using a seabed photography at four stations off Bouvet Island and one station at the Spiess Seamount in the South Atlantic. Surprisingly, the intermediate-scale diversity within the area of investigation was not lower compared to that on the Patagonian shelf and only moderately lower than that on the Antarctic continental shelf. This result is incompatible with Mac Arthur and Wilson’s Island Biogeography Theory describing species richness as a function of immigration of new species into an area and its extension. The relatively high species number and the very small extension of the Bouvet shelf compared to the much larger continental shelves of the other two areas can be explained by long-range dispersal of marine benthic animals in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and high habitat heterogeneity. The observed uncoupling of intermediate-scale from large-scale background species diversity on the Antarctic shelf raises the question whether in these benthic systems an upper capacity limit for diversity exists.  相似文献

We developed a new Multimetric Index for stream assessment, which is mainly focussed on the impact of hydromorphological degradation on the macroinvertebrate fauna. The index was developed for five German stream types, three of which are located in the lowlands of Northern Germany and two in the lower mountainous areas. For each stream type sites representing different stages of hydromorphological degradation were investigated; the macroinvertebrate fauna of each site was sampled two or three times in 2000 (83 sites and 174 samples altogether). In addition, more than 200 parameters describing the hydromorphology of the sites have been recorded. The assessment system was developed separately for each of the stream types. The development process included (1) the generation of a new index (`German Fauna Index'), (2) the selection of faunal metrics, which correlate to hydromorphological degradation and (3) the combination of the selected metrics into a Multimetric Index. To correlate faunal metrics and hydromorphological degradation, a `Structure Index' describing the alteration of stream morphology was generated. A correlation matrix of the selected metrics and the structure index is presented. The `German Fauna Index' is based on taxa, which predominantly occur at sites of a certain morphological degradation class. The selection process of taxa included in the new index was in a first step based on data sampled in this study and supplemented by literature data. For one stream type (mid-sized mountain streams) the process of metric selection and validation is described in detail, including a correlation matrix of the metrics and a validation of the metrics with data on additional sampling sites.  相似文献

The macrobenthic fauna of the organically enriched Oslofjord was sampled in Sept.–Nov. 1977. Seventy-six stations were sampled using a stratified random plan. A total of 146 species were identified, dominated by polychaetes, molluscs and echinoderms. The faunal data were analysed by a variety of methods including diversity indices, log-normal distribution of individuals among species, factor analysis and numerical classification. The primary aim was the detection of pollution-induced disturbance and to delimit the extent of pollution on the benthic fauna of Oslofjord. All of the methods used showed a gradient from heavy pollution at the innermost part of the fjord where few species occurred, together with high dominance and low diversity, to normal unpolluted conditions at the Drøbak sill with high species diversity. From the classification analysis a combination of both site and species data revealed a trend in species groupings which were broadly similar to data from other Scandinavian fjords and from Scotland. Hydrographical and biological data taken at the turn of the century and in the 1960's compared with the present data show declining conditions in Oslofjord, due primarily to organic enrichment combined with a naturally poor water exchange which leads to stagnation of the water mass.  相似文献

Bouvet Island is, uniquely, thousands of km from the next nearest land, even other islands. Its Southern Ocean location, isolation and the exposure of its surrounding cliffs have resulted in only rare visits by ship and its coastal marine fauna is little known. For animal taxa with non-pelagic larvae, such as cheilostome bryozoans, the shelf environment of Bouvet is a rare example of isolated oceanic communities. Agassiz trawl samples of the 2003 ANT XXI-2 cruise of the PFS Polarstern collected a total of 18 species of cheilostomes at four sites around Bouvet Island. Of these only four had been reported before amongst the 20 species of cheilostome previously known from this locality. Furthermore eight of the genera are reported for the first time from Bouvet Island. The assemblages were dominated by Austroflustra vulgaris, and in one case Nematoflustra flagellata. The bryozoan fauna seems to be depauperate and bears only low (32% at species and 46% at genus level) similarity to any location within 3,000 km. Its species composition is typically Southern Ocean, with most affinity to the Scotia Arc and Weddell Sea whereas at generic level it is most similar to the Subantarctic Prince Edward Archipelago.  相似文献

Very old trees harbour a diverse fauna of saproxylic insects, many of which are classified as threatened due to the scarcity of this kind of habitat. Parks, which often contain many old trees, are therefore considered to be important sites for this fauna. However parks are intensively managed and dead wood is often removed. Therefore this study compares if the saproxylic beetle fauna in parks is as diverse as it is in more natural stands. Eight ‘Park’ sites at manor houses around lake Mälaren, Sweden were compared with trees in wooded meadows: eight grazed sites, here termed ‘Open’, and 11 sites regrown with younger trees, termed ‘Re-grown’. The comparison was made on lime trees (Tilia spp.): one of the most frequent tree species in old parks which host a diverse beetle fauna. Beetles were sampled with window traps, which in total caught 14,460 saproxylic beetles belonging to 323 species, of which 50 were red-listed. When comparing all saproxylic species, ‘Park’ sites had significantly fewer species than ‘Open’ sites. However, for beetles in hollow trees and for red-listed species there was no significant difference, the number in ‘Park’ being intermediate between ‘Open’ and ‘Re-grown’. Species composition differed between sites, but only marginally so. Therefore, the conclusion is that old park trees on average are as valuable for faunal diversity as trees in more natural sites. Large conservation benefits can be obtained by combining cultural and conservational values in the management of park habitats.  相似文献

Maximum period of existence of endemic genera in the temperately warm-water (subtropical) and temperately cold-water (low boreal and subantarctic) faunal belts is revealed on the base of latest data on the composition of brachiopod fauna of recent seas and oceans and most full data on the paleontological finds of recent brachiopod genera. Most of the subtropical endemics inhabit southern hemisphere; one of them is Bouchardia, which is known beginning with the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian), that brings together southern subtropical faunal belt with the tropical zone and suggests that subtropical waters could serve as a refuge for representatives of ancient warm-water faunas during large geological and hydrological reconstructions at the Mesozoic-Cenozoic boundary. Most of the younger endemics of low boreal and subantarctic faunal belts appeared at the Paleogene-Neogene boundary, during the period of formation of modern contrast climate on the Earth that was caused by the formation of Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The appearance of recent species and genera in the Holocene was influenced by last considerable postglacial reconstruction of climate.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A comparison is made between the fauna of six British tree species sampled by pyrethrum knockdown and the faunal lists in the literature for the same tree species.
2. Conspecific trees vary both in abundance of arthropods and their proportional distribution across taxa, but there are important overriding differences between tree species.
3. The percentage similarity in faunal composition between tree species reflects the ecological specificity of the arthropod groups used for the comparison.
4. The similarity in species composition between tree species is least for phytophages, the guild most closely associated with particular tree species, The two species of Salix are most similar in their fauna for most guilds.
5. About 40% of the entirely phytophagous species in the faunal lists for native trees were found in the knockdown samples.
6. The proportion of individuals of predominantly phytophagous taxa collected that belong to the relevant faunal lists ranges from 0.39 to 0.99.
7. Those species found in the knockdown samples which are not included in faunal lists none the less contribute to the trophic web of the tree.
8. The relative species richness of arboreal faunas assessed from knockdown samples parallels that derived from faunal lists.

Towards the trophic structure of the Bouvet Island marine ecosystem   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Although Bouvet Island is of considerable importance for Southern Ocean species conservation, information on the marine community species inventory and trophic functioning is scarce. Our combined study of stable isotopes and feeding relationships shows that (1) the marine system conforms to the trophic pattern described for other Antarctic systems within the Antarctic circumpolar current (ACC); (2) both the benthic and the pelagic subsystem are almost exclusively linked via suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM); and (3) there is no evidence of a subsystem driven by macroalgae. Bouvet Island can therefore be characterized as a benthic “oasis” within a self-sustaining open ocean pelagic system.  相似文献

Free-living nematodes inhabiting a sandy beach exposed to strong ocean waves were sampled at bimonthly intervals for two years. Six 1.3-litre core samples were taken on each occasion down to a depth of 60 cm. The numbers of each species and their status as juveniles, males and females (with or without eggs) was recorded. In the common species all these stages occur throughout the year, but the population increases in the warmer months of the year and falls to a much lower level in winter. Most species are dispersed throughout the sand to a depth of at least 60 cm, but several species where almost always found below the water table at about 60 cm. The faunal composition of the nematode assemblages changed significantly from month to month. Additional samples were taken to monitor the effects of very strong waves coupled with a very high tide which remodelled the beach. The nematode fauna was partially reconstituted by this event. It is concluded that the intertidal beach fauna is a dynamic extension of the near shore sub-littoral nematode fauna.  相似文献

Assessments of ecosystem restoration have traditionally focused on soil and vegetation, often with little consideration of fauna. It is critical to include fauna in such assessments, not just because of their intrinsic biodiversity value but also because of the many ecological roles that animals play in restoration processes. However, a widely accepted framework for specifying faunal standards for restoration is lacking. Here we present such a framework, incorporating: (1) the identification of appropriate reference conditions; (2) the taxa to be targeted for assessment; (3) the attributes of these taxa to be measured; (4) acceptable similarity with reference conditions; and (5) robust sampling methodologies for reliable assessment. We illustrate this framework using the restoration program at Ranger Uranium Mine in the Australian seasonal tropics, which aims to establish an environment similar to the surrounding World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, corresponding to “full recovery” according to Society for Ecosystem Restoration's standards. Our case study has especially high restoration standards, but our framework has wide applicability to the specification of faunal standards for ecosystem restoration.  相似文献

Benthic fauna of the deeper waters (50–320 m) of the Franz Josef Land archipelago sampled in August 1992 using standard western techniques is described and compared with earlier Russian studies of the archipelago. Three faunal assemblages are recognised at depth ranges between 50–150, 150–300, and >300 m depth. Their distributions are related to depth and to different water masses derived from a mixture of Barents Sea water entering from the south at intermediate depths (20–150 m), and Atlantic water from the north below 300 m. The recorded faunal diversity and biomass is as high as or higher than that from comparable Arctic and northern boreal areas. Comparisons are also made with a complimentary Russian survey in the same area using different techniques. The Russian work collected larger organisms most effectively, whereas the present work recorded the smaller taxa more efficiently. Russian surveys provide complementary data to western studies, but care must be taken when comparing studies as they reflect biases in sampling gear and scientific emphasis. These data intercalibrations are important as Russian archives contain a wealth of information that, if used correctly in association with western data sources, will be useful in environmental monitoring studies as human activities increase in the Eurasian Arctic. The Latitudinal Gradient Program (2002–2011) aimed at understanding the marine and terrestrial ecosystems existing along the Victoria Land coast (Ross Sea), an area characterized by strong latitudinal clines in environmental factors. During the program’s voyage of the Italian RV “Italica” in 2004, a fine-mesh towed gear, the “Rauschert dredge”, was deployed for the first time at 18 stations in four latitudinal distinct shelf areas between ~71°S and ~74°S. The collected samples contained undescribed species and new records for the Ross Sea from a variety of different marine taxa. Here, we describe the molluscan fauna and investigate evidences for latitudinal effects on molluscan diversity, abundance and assemblage composition. No significant latitudinal trends were detected: while diversity did not vary significantly with latitude, species richness showed an apparent but non-significant decrease with increasing latitude. Beta-diversity was found to be high both within and between latitudinally distinct shelf areas. A large fraction (~20 %) of the collected molluscs corresponded to new species records for the Ross Sea or undescribed species. Rarity in Antarctic molluscan occurrences was confirmed, with singletons (i.e. species represented by only a single individual) accounting for a 22 % and uniques (i.e. species occurring in one sample only) for a 43.5 % of the total presence. Our study of the smaller macrofaunal benthic fraction showed that Antarctic marine research still has far to go to have robust reference baselines to measure possible changes in benthic communities, even in the case of the assumed well-known, well-sampled and well-studied group of Ross Sea shelf molluscs. We advocate the use of fine-mesh trawling gears for routine sampling activities in future Antarctic expeditions to assess the full marine biodiversity.  相似文献

In September, 1978, ten ponds inhabited by Cladocera were sampled along the coasts of the Strait of Belle Isle. Fourteen out of nineteen species that were found there also occur in Greenland. On the other hand, a comparison with faunal lists for the island of Newfoundland and several faunal regions of Western Europe, and the ecological distribution of all European Cladocera reveals that the Arctic is settled exclusively by euryecious species, so that the relatively strong “arctic” element within the cladoceran fauna along the Strait of Belle Isle indicates simply the extreme conditions. Macrothrix hirsuticornis NORMAN & BRADY and Daphnia pulex LEYDIG are new for the island of Newfoundland.  相似文献
