Altricial birds show enormous intraspecific diversity in their provisioning strategies, in terms of both the provisioning rate and the amount of food delivered per feeding bout. Extra-pair copulations (EPCs), which result in either extra-pair paternity (EPP) or maternity (EPM), provide an opportunity to demonstrate why provisioning strategies vary among individuals. Because EPP-cuckolded males and EPM-cuckolded females must raise unrelated young, whereas EPM-cuckolded males and EPP-cuckolded females need not, we hypothesized that the first two categories of breeders would reduce parental effort, whereas the latter two categories of breeders would increase parental effort. We tested this hypothesis in the Azure-winged Magpie Cyanopica cyanus by comparing the number and body mass of fledglings, provisioning rates and food amount delivered per feeding bout between EPP- and EPM-cuckolded breeders and faithful breeders. We found that (1) the number of fledglings did not differ significantly between cuckolded and faithful breeders, and (2) fledglings raised by EPM-cuckolded males and EPP-cuckolded females did not differ from faithful breeders, whereas fledglings raised by EPP-cuckolded males and EPM-cuckolded females were significantly smaller than those raised by faithful breeders. Compared with faithful breeders, cuckolded breeders increased parental efforts in nests that contained no unrelated young; hence, their loss in parentage may be compensated for by the enhanced quality of fledglings. In nests that contained unrelated young, cuckolded breeders did not reduce parental efforts; hence, their own offspring would not starve and could survive in competition with mixed brood-mates. Our findings suggest that the differences in parentage created by EPP and EPM scenarios and the potential fitness return of raising a brood for the cuckolded breeders can explain the intraspecific variation in provisioning strategies of altricial birds.  相似文献

In the Azorean rock-pool blenny Parablennius sanguinolentus parvicornis two sequential reproductive tactics occur. Larger and older males establish breeding territories, while some of the smaller males become attached to nest-holder territories, acting as satellites on these territories, which they help to defend while trying parasitic fertilizations when females go in the nests to spawn. In the present paper we tested the effects of the androgens 17alpha-methyltestosterone (MT) and 11-ketotestosterone (KT) in the expression of male secondary sex characters and bourgeois behavior in satellite males. One week after satellites were implanted with Silastic tubes containing MT, KT, or castor oil (control), androgen-treated satellites had developed male secondary sex traits such as longer and wider male-type genital papilla and anal glands that secrete a sex pheromone, both traits being less expressed or absent, respectively, in satellite males. Androgen treatment had no effect on the gonadosomatic index or on the development of the testicular gland. KT treatment had a positive effect on relative liver weight. In terms of behavior, androgen-implanted individuals were less aggressive both in a mirror test and toward females when these were introduced into their tanks. MT-treated individuals spend more time inside the provided nests. Only androgen-implanted satellites managed to have the females entering their nests. When given a chance in a group tank either to try to attract females to their own nest or to act as satellites of an already established nest-holder's nest, MT-implanted males spent significantly more time in their own nest than near the nest-holder nest. These data suggest that androgens, particularly testosterone, may be involved in mating tactic switching in this species.  相似文献

Suckling behaviour in the brown long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Thirty-two adult female brown long-eard bats were taken into captivity. Eight individuals gave birth to single young in captivity (known mother-young pairs), 10 were lactating when captured (putative mother-young pairs), and the remaining 14 bats were non-reproductive. Bats were maintained in five groups consisting of females from sigle(n=3) or mixed (n=2) wild roosts. All bats were housed in outdoor, free-flight enclosures and fed mainly on free-flying noctuid moths. Bats were individually were determined daily (n=152) for a single gruup of bats containing four known mother-young pairs and five non-reproductive bats. The probability of a being attached to the nipple declined from 100% of records at 1-5 days of age to 5% of records at 36-40 days of age. Females were always found suckling their own young. Suckling associations were determined using infra-red sensitive video-recordings of bat behaviour within the roost box. For both known (n=8) and putative mother-young pairs (n=10), there were no records of young attached to lactating females other than their own mothers (from the same or different wild roosts).  相似文献

  • 1 Female beetles working alone or in cooperation with a male excavated vertical, tunnel-shaped brood chambers. Each chamber was filled with dung to form a cylindrical brood mass which contained two eggs, one near each pole.
  • 2 To examine the possible relationship with other Onitini (which lay either one or several eggs per brood mass) factors that influence the two-egg programme were studied. Brood masses with only a single egg were formed if excavation was resumed prematurely. Conversely, when excavation was suppressed several oviposition programmes fused to produce a multi-egg brood mass.
  • 3 The larvae repaired their chambers in the typical Scarabaeine manner by building a self-supporting wall formed from their own excrement. This behaviour also prevented direct contact and fighting between adjacent larvae in the same brood mass, and it allowed the larvae to survive inside artificial brood balls. Similar behaviour was observed in larvae of Onthophagus taunts and Ontho-phagus vacca (which develop in one-egg brood masses). The evolution of nesting habits that involve multi-egg brood masses or free-standing brood balls may depend on the pre-existence of this larval repair behaviour.

Queen-worker conflicts in social insect societies have received much attention in the past decade. In many species workers modify the colony sex ratio to their own advantage or produce their own male offspring. In some other species, however, queens seem to be able to prevent workers from making selfish reproductive decisions. So far, little effort has been made to find out how queens may keep control over sex ratio and male parentage. In this study we use a Lasius niger population under apparent queen control to show that sexual deception cannot explain queen dominance in this population. The sexual deception hypothesis postulates that queens should prevent workers from discriminating against males by disguising male brood as females. Contrary to the predictions of this hypothesis, we found that workers are able to distinguish male and female larvae early in their development: in early spring workers generally placed only either female or male larvae in the uppermost chambers of the nest, although both types of larvae must have been present. At this time males were only at 11% of their final dry weight, a developmental stage at which (according to two models) workers would still have benefited from replacing queen-produced males by females or worker-produced males. This study thus demonstrates that sexual deception cannot account for the apparent queen control over colony sex ratio and male parentage in L. niger.  相似文献

Group living often requires strong levels of communication between individuals. This communication is usually studied in the context of visual or auditory communication. However, chemical communication is the most widely used form of communication. We examined the role of chemical communication in mediating social decisions in a group‐living lizard, Egernia stokesii. Specifically, we examined the extent to which scat‐piling, a behaviour by which individuals deposit scat in a communal area, affected the refuge choice of individual E. stokesii. To achieve this, we examined individual refuge choice in response to scat piles or single scats and against two types of scat stimuli, one being their own scat and the other being scat belonging to an unrelated and unfamiliar conspecific. We show that lizards behave differently when presented with a scat pile compared with a single scat, and whether the scat stimulus was their own or sourced from an unfamiliar conspecific. When scats were in piles, individuals spent more time inspecting, more time in, and more often chose the treatment refuge as their final refuge choice, at a trial’s end, when the treatment was their own scat compared with when the treatment was the refuge with the unfamiliar scat. In contrast, for individual scat treatments, individuals spent more time inspecting and more often ended up in the treatment refuge with an unfamiliar scat compared with when the treatment was their own scat. These results suggest that individuals are responding to information contained within multiple components of the scats – both their volume and their source. These results have implications for understanding how social aggregations are maintained within squamates, where sociality has evolved independently from other vertebrate lineages.  相似文献

White-fronted bee-eaters are colonially breeding birds that exhibit highly developed helping-at-the-nest. Through long-term studies of an individually-marked population, we have documented two costs of social living: 1) harassment of mated females by extra-pair males, and 2) intra-specific parasitism by females who lay eggs in the nests of others. Breeding females are sexually chased and, occasionally, forceably mated by males other than their mates. Focal-sampling of females throughout their period of receptivity revealed that the average female is involved in 5 to 8 sexual chases and is forceably copulated 0.15 to 0.23 times per breeding season. This risk to females would be much greater were it not for the behavior of male mates who remain close to, and actively defend, their partners. Such mate-guarding is highly effective — females entering and leaving the colony in consort with their mates are sexually harassed only 1/10 as often as females travelling alone. Although sexual harassment of females is common at bee-eater colonies, the risk of paternity uncertainty arising from forced copulations is thought to be low. The reason is that females copulate repeatedly with their male mates on all days immediately prior to as well as during egg laying. This point has been overlooked in previous reports and has led to an exaggeration of the paternity risks associated with forced sexual chases. We conclude that sexual chasing of extra-pair females is a low yield reproductive tactic employed primarily by monogamously mated males whose presence at the colony is required to allofeed and mateguard their own egg-laying females. Female white-fronted bee-eaters lay eggs in nests other than their own. This intraspecific parasitism constitutes a greater threat to certainty of parentage than does forced copulation. Over four years of study, 16% of nests were parasitized and 7 % of all eggs were laid by a female other than the breeder (Table 2). Parasitizing females come primarily from two sources: (1) members of mated pairs whose own breeding attempt is disrupted at the time of egg laying, and (2) single females who opportunistically add an egg at the nest of their parents (or parent plus step-parent). In each case of kin-parasitism, the “parasitic” female remained socially integrated with the host group and helped in the rearing of the young. In contrast, 9 of 10 females that parasitized the nests of non-relatives had no other interactions with the hosts (Table 3). Parasitizing females exhibited two specialized behaviors that enhanced their reproductive effectiveness: (1) they spent many hours observing, investigating, and testing the defenses of potential host nests, and (2) they preferentially laid in hosts' nests at the appropriate chronological stage of development. Breeding females also exhibited counterbehaviors against being parasitized. These included: (1) remaining sequestered in their nest chambers for 64%-65% of the daylight hours and 94 % of the pre-roost hours during their days of egg laying, (2) aggressively defending their nest entrances against all investigating (potentially parasitic) females, and (3) actively removing any eggs laid in their nests prior to the initiation of their own clutch. These tactics and countertactics suggest a long evolutionary history of parasitic opportunities and risks among white-fronted bee-eaters.  相似文献

  • 1 Single males, single females or pairs of dung beetles, Onthophagus vacca, were released on artificial small (100 g) or large (1000 g) dung pats in the laboratory. Emigrating beetles were trapped at 12 h intervals, and the number and size of the brood chambers were recorded after each replicate.
  • 2 Emigration of males was delayed if females were present in the same dung pats, whereas emigration times of females were independent of the presence or absence of males.
  • 3 A residency of 60 h proved to be a threshold value. Females emigrating before this time did not breed, whereas those emigrating later had built at least two brood chambers.

There is very little confirmed information on the social organisation of breeding Lesser Spotted Eagle populations, the turnover rate of adults, and their nest-site and partner fidelity. According to established knowledge, however, breeding individuals are territorial and defend at least the immediate vicinity of the nest site against their own species. It has further been thought that females rearing young, as with the females of other raptor species, remain within a radius of only a few kilometres of their eyrie. Using GPS satellite telemetry and DNA microsatellite analysis (DNA STR typing), we were able to disprove this prevailing hypothesis. A satellite-tracked female flew over 50 km away from her eyrie (D) in at least two different directions and visited at least one other occupied eyrie (T). It was also established that at least two strange females arrived at her eyrie, which contained young, from as far away as 57 km, and probably remained there for some considerable time. The pool of alleles represented at the different loci analysed, as well as the distribution of these alleles among the individuals, excludes the possibility that these females could be sisters or even half-sisters. Visits of strange eagles at this eyrie were also confirmed by direct observation. It can therefore be assumed that males only exhibit territorial behaviour towards their own sex and not towards strange females and that females do not exhibit territorial behaviour towards other females; but all these assumptions must be confirmed by further studies. For the first time it could be proved by means of microsatellite analysis that almost all females studied used the same breeding site for 2 consecutive years. The longest established period in which both partners of a pair remained at the same breeding site was 3 consecutive years.  相似文献

In females of Df(1)v-L4/+(0/+) genotype, the presence of the wild-type allele of small bristles (sbr) gene in a single dose has no significant effect on their fecundity, whereas a reduced dose of the temperature-sensitive allele sbr10(l(1)ts403) causes a strong sterilizing effect in females Df(1)v-L4/sbr10 (0/sbr10) at permissive temperature. We studied the contribution to this effects of the following factors: resorption of egg chambers, decreased oviposition, offspring death at the embryonic and larval stages, and reduced fecundity in females 0/sbr10. Sterilizing effect of the mutant sbr10 allele proved to be primarily caused by offspring lethality at the embryonic and first-instar larval stages. In 0/+ females, the majority of undeveloped eggs contained embryos that perished at the late developmental stages, whereas in females 0/sbr10, at least 50% of undeveloped egg showed no visible signs of development or the embryo development was arrested at early stages of embryogenesis. The results obtained suggest insufficiency of the temperature-sensitive allele sbr10 in haploid state to ensure the reproductive functions of Drosophila melanogaster females.  相似文献

A major challenge in behavioural and evolutionary ecology is to understand the evolution and maintenance of consistent behavioural differences among individuals within populations, often referred to as animal ‘personalities’. Here, we present evidence suggesting that sexual selection may act on such personality differences in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), as females seem to choose males on the basis of their exploratory behaviour per se, while taking into account their own personality. After observing a pair of males, whose apparent levels of exploration were experimentally manipulated, females that exhibited low‐exploratory tendencies showed no preference during mate choice for males that had appeared to be either ‘exploratory’ or ‘unexploratory’. In contrast, intermediate and highly exploratory females preferred apparently exploratory males over apparently unexploratory ones. Our results suggest that behavioural or genetic compatibility for personality traits might be important for mate choice, at least for exploratory individuals.  相似文献

Group sizes in free‐living juvenile black perch Embiotoca jacksoni were quantified and predictions of the hypothesis that such groups comprise sibling brood‐mates were tested. Group sizes in the field were within the range of female brood sizes and often occurred close to each other but did not merge. In captivity, juveniles formed groups immediately after birth. In laboratory experiments, they also associated significantly more with chambers containing familiar members of their own brood than empty chambers but did not associate more with chambers containing similar‐sized juveniles from a different brood. Juvenile E. jacksoni also associated significantly more with chambers containing familiar brood‐mates than with chambers containing unfamiliar members of a different brood. The strength of this preference increased with the number of days fish had been together since birth. When two broods were placed in a large outdoor tank, all individuals from both broods directed significantly more aggressive acts towards members of the other brood than towards members of their own brood. While the relative effects of familiarity and relatedness cannot be completely separated in this viviparous species, associating with familiar individuals would facilitate the maintenance of sibling groups in the field.  相似文献

In order to study the phenomenon of estrous entrainment and its relation to social behavior two studies were conducted with female hamsters. In the first experiment single females were placed in close proximity, but not in direct contact with three other females whose estrous cycles were already synchronous. The single female was either in phase (control) or out of phase (experimental) with the synchronous females. In the second experiment two females at the same (control) or different (experimental) points in their estrous cycles lived together until entrainment occurred. Their social interactions during the initial 30 min in this shared habitat were observed and a dominance hierarchy established. Estrous stage was determined daily for each animal by vaginal lavage. The major findings of these studies are (1) estrous entrainment occurred in all female hamsters whether living in close proximity (Expt I), or living together (Expt II); (2) regardless of the stage of estrous at the start of cohabitation, hamsters' cycles may be either accelerated or decelerated depending on whether the partner's stage is ahead or behind their own; (3) social interaction appears to accelerate the entrainment process, and (4) when examined in light of social dominance, the behaviorally submissive animals entrained to the behaviorally dominant animals.  相似文献

The ability of broad-headed skinks (Eumeces laticeps) to distinguish familiar from unfamiliar individuals of the opposite sex and themselves from other individuals of the same sex using only chemical stimuli was examined experimentally. Cloacal chemical stimuli were presented to lizards on moistened cotton swabs and numbers of tongue-flicks performed in 60 s were recorded. Males emitted significantly greater numbers of tongue-flicks in response to chemical cues from unfamiliar females than of female cagemates. Response rates of males housed with females and males housed alone to chemical stimuli from unfamiliar females did not differ. Chemical stimuli from unfamiliar males elicited significantly more tongue flicks from males than their own or deionized water, but their own stimuli elicited no more than the odourless control. Females tongue-flicked significantly more in response to cloacal chemical stimuli from unfamiliar males than from male cagemates. The findings indicate that both sexes of broad-headed skinks can discriminate between chemical stimuli of familiar and unfamiliar individuals of the opposite sex and that males can distinguish their own cloacal chemicals from those of unfamiliar males. The possible functions of these chemosensory capacities, including location of mates by scent-trailing and assessment of the presence of sexual competitors, are discussed in relation to the social behaviour of E. laticeps.  相似文献

In a study carried out on Microstigmus thripoctenus on Barro Colorado Island (Republic of Panama) between March and May 1998, 29 active nests were located. The nests contained between one and seven cells, with one (female) to six (three females and three males) adults. Using simple manipulations in which wasps were offered a choice between experimentally emptied foreign nests and their own nest when the adults were away, it was observed that returning adults were able to recognize their own nest. Foreign nests were always rejected by females coming from nests with a single adult, whereas individuals from nests with several adults in five of seven cases did accept the foreign nests, continuing their normal activities in them, without destroying their contents. Adopted foreign nests were inspected at a higher rate following adoption. Nests containing several adults tended to remain longer on leaves supporting them, and their external surfaces were inspected more frequently and longer than those of nests containing only one occupant. Nests are not associated with any particular plant and were found attached to leaves of 19 species of understory plants.  相似文献

Male potato moths less than 24-h-old were sterilised in fumigation chambers in the laboratory with one of three concentrations of thiotepa 0·05, 0·075 and 0·1 g at either 25 or 30°C. Sterile males were associated with untreated virgin males and virgin females in the ratios of 1:1:1, 2:1:1, 4:1:1 and 1:0:1. The sterile and normal male contingents were placed with a single female. The percentage of egg hatch after mating decreased with the increase of concentration and the sterile male ratio. Sterile males were competitive in mating and their longevity was not adversely affected in comparison to the control groups.  相似文献

Discrete dimorphism of males within a species is often the result of selection for alternative reproductive strategies, and these strategies may be evolutionarily stable (ESS). An ESS may be either mixed (genetically fixed differences) or conditional (flexible differences related to varying environmental conditions) (PARKER 1984). Mature males of the marine amphipod Jassa marmorata are dimorphic. Large ‘major’ males have a greatly enlarged thumb (propodus) on their 2nd gnathopods, while small ‘minor’ males exhibit thumbs that are reduced, and CONIAN (1989) suggested that minors may exhibit a different mating strategy from majors. Ratios of males and females fluctuate seasonally (FRANZ 1989) and female body size is inversely correlated with temperature (FRANZ 1989) so male dimorphism could be a flexible response to varying environmental conditions. I sampled a natural population of J. marmorata over a 1-yr period, quantified major and minor morphology, and measured male behaviour and mating success in experimental arenas that contained varying proportions of male morphs and females. Morphology of the two morphs is discrete; female body size varies with season with significantly smaller individuals in summer and fall; body size predicts morph type; and ratios of majors, minors and females fluctuate seasonally. Finally I showed that majors and minors use different mating tactics to gain access to receptive females, and that these behaviours depend on the male's own morphology and on the environmental setting that it finds itself in. Major males fight, display and attempt to evict other males to mate with receptive females. Minors never fight with, display to or attempt to evict majors, but they infrequently display to and attempt to evict other minor males. Furthermore, mating success of the two morphs was not significantly different and may depend on whether males are with a majority or minority of their own type. These data support the conclusion that major and minor male J. marmorata display evolutionarily stable alternative reproductive strategics, but more work should address the nature of this ESS.  相似文献

Sexual selection via female mate choice is thought to have played a key role in the speciation of haplochromine cichlids, but a dominant role for visual signals in such processes has lately been called into question. In addition, the possible role of male mating preferences in haplochromine speciation has been little studied. We studied patterns of both female and male mate choice, based exclusively on visual signals, in order to evaluate potential reproductive isolation between two populations of the Lake Malawi haplochromine Labeotropheus fuelleborni. In the first experiment, females were allowed to choose between two males, one from the same population and the other allopatric with respect to the female. Females in this experiment responded more frequently to males from their own population. Similarly, the males in these trials displayed more frequently when presented with females of their own population. In the second experiment, a female was allowed to choose between two males, either both from her own population or both allopatric. In these trials, both males and females from the Katale population interacted significantly more frequently in settings in which all three individuals were from the same population ("same-population trios"), and those from the Chipoka population showed a similar trend. Thus, patterns in both male and female courtship behavior suggest that visual signals contribute to at least incipient reproductive isolation between populations of L. fuelleborni [Current Zoology 56 (1): 65-72 2010].  相似文献

Amounts of chromosomal DNA were estimated for Feulgen-stained, ovarian cells from flies carrying certain mutant alleles of the otu (ovarian tumor) gene. Epithelial sheath cells and lumen cells were found to contain the diploid (2C) amount of DNA and therefore served as internal, cytophotometric standards. Mitotically active follicle cells over young tumors from homozygous otu1 females contained either the 2C or 4C amounts of DNA; whereas, the tumor cell population contained 2C, 4C and 8C nuclei and many intermediate values. Egg chambers also occur in homozygous otu7 females. Follicle cells above these oocytes undergo a maximum of four cycles of endomitotic DNA replication. The accompanying nurse cells (PNC) contain polytene chromosomes. These undergo a maximum of 12 endonuclear replication cycles. The PNCs show the expected levels of DNA for the first 6 cycles and the fraction failing to replicate during subsequent cycles may be as small as 10%. Lower than expected levels of DNA were detected in PNCs from an otu1/otu3 ovary, reflecting roughly 20% underreplication. The latter PNCs may have been interrupted before DNA synthesis was concluded. No simple model of genomic underreplication accounts for the several different patterns of DNA behavior observed for various otu mutants.  相似文献

Parental investment and sexually‐selected signals can be intimately related, either because the signals indicate the amount of investment that an individual is prepared to make, and hence its value as a mate (the ‘good parent process’), or because individuals are selected to vary their own investment in relation to their mate’s signals (‘differential allocation’ or ‘reproductive compensation’). Correlations between parental investment and the sexually selected signals of both an individual and its mate are therefore of central interest in sexual selection. Blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus are an ideal study species to investigate such correlations because they provide substantial amounts of biparental care and possess sexually‐selected structural UV coloration that seems to signal attractiveness in both sexes. We investigated whether feeding rates of male and female blue tits were correlated with either their own or their mate’s UV coloration, and whether any such correlation was affected by the sex ratio of the brood. We also investigated whether any such correlations were reflected in offspring phenotype. Feeding rates were not correlated with either sex of parent’s own UV coloration. However, they were correlated with the mate’s UV coloration, but in opposite directions in males and females: females had higher feeding rates when mated to bright UV males, implying differential allocation, while males had lower feeding rates when mated to bright UV females, implying reproductive compensation. These relationships were unaffected by the sex ratio of the brood. In addition, fledgling tarsus length, but not mass, was related to male UV coloration, and to female UV coloration in interaction with male age. These results suggest that both male and female attractiveness influence parental investment of the mate, and that this in turn affects offspring phenotype. We found no evidence for differential sex allocation.  相似文献
