The seasonal growth of Salvinia molesta Mitchell was recorded during the period March 1978 to April 1979 in floating quadrats established in Lake Moondarra and a nearby sewage lagoon. Primary-form plants were used as inoculum in the quadrats; leaf numbers, fresh weight and percentage cover changes were recorded. These three parameters were significantly correlated. The highest individual rates of increase recorded in the lagoon were 51.4% per day for percentage cover, 50.1% per day for leaf numbers and 38.3% per day for fresh weight. In the lake, the highest values were 19.0% per day, 25.7% per day and 16.6% per day, respectively. A simple growth model for this species, relating growth rate to water temperature, accounted for 76% of the observed variance in leaf number growth rates in the lagoon. The same model, however, only explained 5% of the variance in the lake, suggesting growth limitations by other factors.  相似文献

The effects of temperature and diet on the growth of captive year 0 specimens of Opansus tau were examined for two consecutive year classes. The 2001 year class was raised at about 23, 26, or 29 degrees C and provided with live brine shrimp, frozen butterfish and squid, or commercial food pellets (45% protein, 19% fat, and 3% fiber) three times per week. Maximal growth was achieved with the pellet diet, and fish raised at 29 degrees C attained the highest mean wet weight (84.0 g +/- 14.6 g SE) and fastest instantaneous relative growth rate (IRGR, 1.79% body weight/d). The 2002 year class was raised on the same pellet diet at 31.5 degrees C and fed 3, 5, or 7 times per week. Although more frequent feedings led to significantly greater mean wet weight in the first half of the year, by month 12 there was no significant difference between the three feeding frequencies. These fish weighed approximately 68 g and had an average IRGR of 1.74% body weight/d. The pellet diet during both years was correlated with high survival (> 75%).  相似文献

为了摸清高山姬鼠种群数量变节变动规律,探讨其种群数量预测方法,采用夹夜法调查逐月捕获率,用捕获率为预测指标,建立种群数量预测预报模型。对1996-2008年贵州省大方县高山姬鼠种群数量动态及种群数量进行分析预测,结果表明:高山姬鼠主要分布于稻田、旱地耕作区,是大方县农田害鼠优势种,占总鼠数的62.32%。10a平均捕获率为(2.58±1.27)%,全年种群数量变动曲线呈单峰型,各年度种群数量的变化曲线基本相似,一年内种群数量在6月份出现1个数量高峰,平均捕获率达(4.63±3.03)%。不同年度、不同月份、不同季节之间种群数量存在显著差异。根据历年高山姬鼠种群数量变动幅度及发生危害情况,结合当地鼠害防治指标,制定了高山姬鼠种群数量分级标准。分析1996-2008年高山姬鼠数量高峰期前各月捕获率、种群繁殖参数(性比、怀孕率、胎仔数、睾丸下降率、繁殖指数)与数量高峰期6月种群密度的关系后发现,4月份种群数量基数与6月份种群密度之间相关极显著,运用回归分析方法,建立了应用4月份种群数量基数(X)预测数量高峰期6月份种群密度(Y)的短期预测预报模型:Y=1.7558X+0.1442,可提前2个月预测当年数量峰种群密度和发生程度,经回测验证,数值和数量级预测值与实测值基本相符,数值预测和数量级预测平均吻合率为92.84%、100.00%,结果比较准确,故该预测预报模型具有一定的实用性和可行性。  相似文献

Summary Using a continuous flow technique the relationship between growth rate and substrate concentration was investigated with glucose as the limiting factor of a culture of Escherichia coli. Graphical and numerical analysis of the experimental data demonstrated that the application of the Michaelis-Menten equation produced erroneous results, whereas, the constants obtained from the Teissier equation were in agreement with the experimental data. On this basis, new equations defining the steady state cell and substrate concentration in continuous flow cultures were developed and tested against experimental data.Comparison of the specific growth rates, substrate uptake rates and oxygen consumption rates demonstrated that all were directly proportional to each other and could be related to each other by mathematical equations. Specifically it was shown that as the growth rate increased from 0.06 to k m =0.76 the substrate uptake rate increased from 134 to 1420 mg glucose per gram cell weight per hour and the oxygen consumption rate increased from 48.6 to 505 mg O2 per gram cell weight per hour. Independent of the growth rate 37% of the carbohydrate consumed were oxidized. The yield factor varied from 0.44 at low growth rates to 0.54 at high growth rates. Analysis of the growth rate-substrate uptake rate relationship indicated that a minimum substrate uptake rate of 55 mg glucose per gram cell weight per hour existed below which cell reproduction would cease. This was supported by the fact that steady state conditions could not be maintained in the culture at D values below 0.02 when the substrate supply rate decreased below 45 mg glucose per gram cell weight per hour.Material contained in this paper was submitted as a thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph. The annual cycle of growth in plants of P. sylvestris L. varyingin age from 2 to 5 years was studied mainly by following theirweight changes through periodic sampling. Immediately followingbud-break there was a period of about 1 month in which, althoughmeristematic and extension growth were rapid in both shoot androot, there was no gain in weight by the plant. There was evidencethat the needles remaining from previous years contained a considerableamount of storage material which was utilized at this time.During May and June the main increase in weight was in the newshoots, but in August and September assimilates were more evenlydivided between the new shoots on the one hand, and the oldstem and the root on the other. The average relative growth-ratesfor the months May to September were between 1·0 and0·4 per cent, per day in plants growing in favourableconditions, the lower rates being found in older plants. Duringthe months October to March slow increase in weight occurredin needles, stem, and root, and the R.G.R.s in two experimentswere 0·21 and 0·15 per cent, per day. The netassimilation rate fell with increasing age and in the summerof the fifth year was 0·06g./g./week or 0·10g./dm.2/week.This low value of N.A.R. is discussed in relation to the knownhigh rate of production of P. sylvestris stands and their evergreenhabit.  相似文献

Understanding the energy requirements for captive sharks is important for their successful long-term maintenance. This information is critical in assessing the health of the animals and the suitability of their environment. We studied five bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) for up to 7 years in a 2.5 × 106 liter oceanarium. Individual animal feedings provided information for food intake analysis. During the first 3 years, fork length increase was estimated to have averaged 1.9 cm/month (s.d. = 0.1), or 23.0 cm/year. Biannual measurements, begun in the fourth year, showed that growth rates decreased during the next 4 years to a mean rate of 0.6 cm/month (s.d. = 0.2), or about 7.0 cm/year. Mean food consumption from June 1988 to December 1992 was 3.4% body weight per week. Caloric conversion of weights incorporated into a simple bioenergetics model providing mean metabolic expenditures per animal was 5.7 (s.d. = 0.3) and 4 (s.d. = 0.5) kcal/kg/day for 1991 and 1992, respectively. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) seedlings (n=555) were grown from field-collected propagules for 3 months in a new type of terrestrial nursery. They were grown in clusters of five plants, and then they were transplanted to a clear-cut zone in a lagoon fringed by a mangrove forest at Laguna de Balandra, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Survival and plant development of transplants were monitored at 6-monthly intervals for 2 years. After 1 month, the survival of seedlings was 96%, later stabilizing at approximately 77%. After 24 months, 74% of the plants were still alive. The best cluster, showing maximum growth under mangrove swamp conditions in this arid zone, was a two-plant cluster. The lagoon has a low natural regeneration rate of 48 plants per 350 m2 per 6 years of monitoring. This study shows the feasibility of restoring destroyed arid-coast lagoons with black mangroves.  相似文献

The maintenance coefficient of glucose-limited Aspergillus nidulans chemostat cultures at 30 C was 0.018 g per g (dry weight) per hr for glucose and 0.55 mmoles per g (dry weight) per hr for oxygen. These values can only be approximate because melanin was produced by the mold at low growth rates and because it is unlikely that this polymer contributed to the maintenance energy requirement although it contributed to the dry weight. Biomass (defined here as dry weight minus melanin) was used to calculate a more meaningful maintenance coefficient for glucose (0.029 g of glucose per g of biomass per hr). At the highest growth rates examined, a nonlinear relationship between growth rate and glucose utilization rate was obtained, suggesting a qualitative change in the metabolic activities of the mold at high growth rates. The oxidative capacity of the mold was highest at the highest growth rates. This observation indicates that the increased substrate utilization rate observed at the higher growth rates is a reflection of enhanced enzyme synthesis. This hypothesis was verified by assaying the specific activities of several enzymes at different growth rates. However, in contrast to all the other enzymes assayed, the activities of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate: (acceptor) oxido-reductases were highest at the lowest growth rates.  相似文献

Nitrate reductase activity of soybeans (Glycine max L. Merr.) was evaluated in soil plots and outdoor hydroponic gravel culture systems throughout the growing season. Nitrate reductase profiles within the plant canopy were also established. Mean activity per gram fresh weight per hour of the entire plant canopy was highest in the seedling stage while total activity (activity per gram fresh weight per hour times the total leaf weight) reached a maximum when plants were in the full bloom to midpod fill stage. Nitrate reductase activity per gram fresh weight per hour was highest in the uppermost leaf just prior to full expansion and declined with leaf position lower in the canopy. Total nitrate reductase activity per leaf was also highest in the upper-most fully expanded leaf during early growth stages. Maximum total activity shifted to leaf positions lower in the plant canopy with later growth stages.  相似文献

Food consumption and growth rates of 7–28-day-old Menidia beryllina were measured in response to natural ranges of temperature and prey availability. Feeding level, temperature and age all had significant effects on growth rate, although the effect of feeding level explained most of the variance. Feeding level also had a significant effect on gross growth efficiency, but temperature and age did not. Absolute growth rates (mg per day) increased dramatically with temperature, feeding level, and age. Variability in growth was greatest for fish feeding at the lowest feeding level. For a given fish weight, temperature had a positive effect on consumption rate, and maximum consumption ( C max) of any treatment combination reached 75% body weight per day. Maximum growth rate was estimated at 24.6% body weight per day, and gross growth efficiency reached an estimated maximum of 0.375 at an ingestion rate of 25% body weight per day. Starved larvae lost on average 5.4% body weight per day and larvae required 6.4% body weight food consumption per day for maintenance. Multiple regressions of feeding level, temperature, and age/size on instantaneous growth rates indicated that increases in temperature increased maintenance requirements and required that fish consume a greater proportion of C max to attain maximum growth. Growth rates decreased with increases in temperature for fish eating a specific weight of food.  相似文献

The growth rate of queen conch cultured in pens was studied from October 1993 to March 1994. Sixteen pens (50 m2 each, four pens per environment), were set in four environments: Thalassia, Thalassia-sand, Sand and Coral within a reef lagoon on Punta Gavilan and Banco Chinchorro. Twenty conchs were introduced in each pen (sizes: 100-120, 120-140, 140-160 and 160-180 mm shell length) and measured monthly to the nearest mm. Growth rate was assessed by two methods: a) shell marginal mean increase and b) the Gulland-Holt method considering all conch within pens. In the first method, the environment Sand had the highest growth (3.21 +/- 0.26 mm/month) at Punta Gavilan, whereas at Banco Chinchorro, highest growth was recorded in Coral (2.31 +/- 0.44 mm/month). Considering the second method, highest asymptotic length conch in Punta Gavilan occurred in Thalassia-sand (287.5 mm), whereas in Banco Chinchorro the highest asymptotic length was measured in Sand (318.1 mm). There were significant differences in growth between sites; juvenile growth is related with habitat quality mainly food availability.  相似文献

A total of 486 specimens of Scardinius erythrophthalmus caught in the Anzali lagoon, a large lagoon located in the southwest Caspian Sea (Iran), between March and June 2007 were examined. Age determination showed that the maximum ages observed were 4+ in males and 5+ in females. Isometric growth was identified from length-weight relationship in males, females and pooled data. There was no significant difference from parity in the overall sex ratio of 252 males to 234 females. The fish spawn from mid April to late May, with peak spawning in mid May with the highest average GSI value of 7.12 and 13.52 for males and females respectively. The absolute fecundity ranged between 1482–59620 eggs with the mean of 9287.87 eggs while relative fecundity ranged from 127.8 to 1737.6 eggs/g with the average of 709 eggs/g of body weight. Egg diameter ranged from 0.43 to 1.23 mm with a mean of 0.73 mm. The characteristics of rudd in the stunted population from the Anzali lagoon differ markedly from those of other localities of its range.  相似文献

The hydrocarbon-rich green microalga, Botryococcus braunii, was grown on secondarily treated sewage (STS) in a continuous bioreactor system. The algal biomass increased at a sustained rate of 196 mg dry weight/l per week for 1 month. The hydrocarbon content of algae grown on STS (49%) compared well with that of algae grown on an artificial medium. The concentrations of nitrate and phosphate ions in STS decreased from 5.5 to 4.0 mg nitrogen/l and 0.08 to 0.03 mg phosphorus/l, respectively, by algal consumption. STS would thus appear to suffice as an appropriate medium for continuously sustainable growth of B. braunii and the algal consumption of nitrate and phosphate should help in removing these ions from STS.  相似文献

We measured progesterone and estradiol levels from birth to the beginning of adult life in 10 Thoroughbred fillies from the Equilia Stud Farm in Avaré SP, Brasil. The animals were measured and weighed monthly for the determination of body development and of a possible correlation between the rate of weight and height gain and the onset of detectable sex hormone levels. Jugular blood was collected twice a week and stored at -20 degrees C until assay of progesterone by a solid phase RIA with a sensitivity of 0.32 nmol L and of estradiol by liquid phase RIA adapted to low levels (3.67 pmol L ). The fillies were born with high serum levels of both hormones, which fell to undetectable levels by the first week of life. A variation in growth rate was observed, with the highest levels occurring from birth to the 3rd month of life, followed by a reduction until 15 mo of life, when fast growth was resumed. The monthly weight gain was 1.5% when the fillies reached puberty and 5.4% during the next month, (P < 0.05, Friedman test). During this second period of accelerated growth after the beginning of progesterone production at detectable levels (above 0.318 nmol L ), the parameters of skeletal growth did not differ (P > 0.05). The month of onset of puberty was the month of lowest weight gain in the life of the fillies, and it coincided with the highest insolation period. In conclusion, horses, like all other developed vertebrates, have a double pattern of development, with the acceleration observed at puberty depending on sex steroids, which in turn coincides with the highest insolation period. Gonadal activity characterized by serum progesterone levels was low from birth to the onset of puberty. After puberty the progesterone cycles were similar to those of adult animals with a mature hypothalamic-gonadal axis.  相似文献

用4种不同粗蛋白含量的日粮饲喂60条2~3岁Beagle犬种犬(♀48,♂12)和200条(♀,♂各半)1~8月龄生长犬,对种母犬2~3胎的主要繁殖性能和生长犬的生长性能(体重月平均增加)进行测定.结果 表明饲喂粗蛋白含量水平为28.6%的日粮,受试母犬表现出优良的繁殖性能:配怀率98.5%、平均产仔数6.3条/胎、仔犬成活率90.3%;1~8月龄生长Beagle犬饲喂粗蛋白含量水平为32.8%为最佳,平均月增重为1.41 kg.说明不同粗蛋白含量日粮对Beagle犬生产力有明显的影响.  相似文献

We have developed an assay, which uses radiolabeled sucrose as the marker, to measure the rate of fluid-phase endocytosis in isolated rat adipocytes. In addition, the assay was adapted to allow measurement of the release of sucrose from previously loaded cells (fluid-phase exocytosis). Adipocytes take up sucrose at an approximately linear rate for at least 1.5 hours. A portion of the pinocytosed sucrose is rapidly (half-time about 20 minutes) returned to the medium. The minimal value for fluid uptake by endocytosis is 57 nl/10(6) cells-h at 37 degrees C; this value corresponds to the formation of 110,000 endocytic vesicles of 100-nm diameter per cell per hour and the internalization of about 20% of the plasma membrane per hour. Insulin caused a small and variable increase in the rate of sucrose uptake. The average increase of 31% from 11 experiments is statistically significant at the level of P less than 0.01. A small insulin effect upon the uptake of the calcium complex of [14C]EDTA was also observed. Since this complex was taken up at 2.5 times the rate of sucrose, it probably entered by a combination of fluid-phase and adsorptive pinocytosis. Insulin did not elicit a significant change in the rate of sucrose release from preloaded cells.  相似文献

Methionine sulfoximine induced release of ammonia from illuminated cells of Ankistrodesmus braunii (Naegeli) Brunnth, in normal air, but less in air enriched to 3% CO2. In normal air, methionine sulfoximine also induced glycolate release. Addition of either glutamate, glycine, or serine suppressed glycolate release, whereas glutamate and glycine at the same time stimulated ammonia release. The results indicate that inhibition of glutamine synthetase and thereby inhibition of photorespiratory nitrogen cycling restricts the sink capacity for glycolate in the photorespiratory carbon cycle. An external supply of glutamate, glycine, or serine seems to stimulate glyoxylate transamination and thus partly restores the sink capacity. Calculations of total glycolate formation rates in air from glycolate and ammonia release rates in the presence of methionine sulfoximine and glutamate revealed values of approximately 20 micromoles glycolate per milligram chlorophyll per hour on the average. Similar calculations led to an estimated rate of photorespiratory ammonia release in air, in the absence of methionine sulfoximine, of about 10 micromoles per milligram chlorophyll per hour on the average, a value comparable to the primary nitrogen assimilation rate of 8 micromoles per milligram chlorophyll per hour.  相似文献

Haploid callus cells of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) were grown photoautotrophically on a solid agar medium in the absence of sucrose in Petri plates in an atmosphere of 1% or 3% CO2 in air. The averages of dry weight increases for four to five consecutive passages were 2.3- to 3.6-fold per 3-week passage for different subclones. Photosynthetic 14CO2 assimilation was maximum at about 1% CO2 with half-maximal rates obtained at 0.2% CO2. At saturating CO2 concentration the average rate of CO2 fixation was about 5 μmole per gram fresh weight per hour or about 125 μmole per mg of chlorophyll per hour.  相似文献

Our objective was to examine alterations in carbohydrate status of leaf meristems that are associated with nitrogen-induced changes in leaf elongation rates of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Dark respiration rates, concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates, and soluble proteins were measured in leaf intercalary meristems and adjacent segments of elongating leaves. The two genotypes used differed by 43% in leaf elongation rate. Application of high nitrogen (336 kilograms per hectare) resulted in 140% higher leaf elongation rate when compared to plants receiving low nitrogen (22 kilograms per hectare). Leaf meristems of plants receiving high and low nitrogen had dark respiration rates of 5.4 and 2.9 microliters O2 consumed per milligram structural dry weight per hour, respectively. Concentrations of soluble proteins were lower while concentrations of fructan tended to be slightly higher in leaf meristems of low-nitrogen plants when compared to high-nitrogen plants. Concentrations of reducing sugars, nonreducing sugars, and takadiastase-soluble carbohydrate of leaf meristems were not affected by nitrogen treatment. Total nonstructural carbohydrates of leaf meristems averaged 44 and 39% of dry weight for low- and high-nitrogen plants, respectively. Within the leaf meristem, approximately 74 and 34% of the pool of total nonstructural carbohydrate could be consumed per day in high- and low-nitrogen plants, respectively, assuming no carbohydrate import to the meristem occurred. Plants were able to maintain high concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates in leaf meristems despite a 3-fold range in leaf elongation rates, suggesting that carbohydrate synthesis and transport to leaf intercalary meristems may not limit leaf growth of these genotypes.  相似文献
