Crowding effects of larvae on survival and development were examined for the broad-horned flour beetle, Gnathocerus cornutus (F.). The larvae matured about 3 weeks after hatching regardless of their densities, but pupation was severely hindered by crowding. There existed an upper limit for the number of the pupae produced and its mechanism was studied by a statistical analysis of the distribution patterns of pupal cells and the experiment in which glass tubes were artificially supplied in addition as pupation site. These studies show that G. cornutus larvae have a habit to construct cells for pupation and this habit leads to a contest competition for pupation site at high densities. The significance of the contest competition for population regulation was discussed comparing the results on Tribolium confusumJacqueline duVal .  相似文献

The butterflies Graphium sarpedon nipponum Fruhstorfer and Papilio xuthus Linné show pupal protective color polymorphism, but the two species appear to have different sensory mechanisms for determining pupal coloration. When light was of sufficient illumination, the larvae of Graphium sarpedon became bright yellowish green pupae on white pupation boards and reddish brown pupae on black pupation boards. The pupal coloration thus strongly depended on the brightness of the pupation site. In addition, larvae became bright yellowish green pupae in complete darkness. From these results, measurement of the illumination suggested that pupal color is determined by the illuminant difference between incidence light from the dorsal direction and ventral light from a paper board; i.e., the sum of the reflected light of the board plus the penetrated light passing through the board. The illuminant difference required for reddish brown coloration was 40 lux or more. The optical signals received through the stemmata during a critical period before formation of the thorax garter (band string) were important for coloration. By contrast, in Papilio xuthus, successive tactile signals from a rough surfaced pupation site during a critical period before and after formation of the garter were important for determining brown pupal coloration.  相似文献

Preadult mortality of Drosophila simulans in the laboratory is influenced by larval behavior during pupation site choice. The possibility that larvae select a suitable place to pupate may have profound repercussions on their darwinian fitnesses. Twenty-three isofemale lines of a population of D. simulans were analyzed twice for pupation preference, the first time inmediately after being captured, and again after a year of laboratory culture. Pupation height per vial, pupation height on the vial walls, percentage of pupae either in food or on the wall, and egg-to-pupa viability were estimated. A great intrapopulational variation was noticed with an important genetic component for pupation site choice. This suggests a great larval adaptative potential in the population for selecting and using heterogeneous habitats. Time seems not to have modified the population in both the mean values and the phenotypic and genetic variances. Larval viability, however, increased with time. Pupation site choice is discussed on the basis of two independent sets of genes.  相似文献

In the wild, larvae of several species of Drosophila develop in heterogeneous and rapidly changing environments sharing resources as food and space. In this scenario, sensory systems contribute to detect, localize and recognize congeners and heterospecifics, and provide information about the availability of food and chemical features of environments where animals live. We investigated the behavior of D. simulans and D. buzzatii larvae to chemicals emitted by conspecific and heterospecific larvae. Our goal was to understand the role of these substances in the selection of pupation sites in the two species that cohabit within decaying prickly pear fruits (Opuntia ficus-indica). In these breeding sites, larvae of D. simulans and D. buzzatii detect larvae of the other species changing their pupation site preferences. Larvae of the two species pupated in the part of the fruit containing no or few heterospecifics, and spent a longer time in/on spots marked by conspecifics rather than heterospecifics. In contrast, larvae of the two species reared in isolation from conspecifics pupated randomly over the substrate and spent a similar amount of time on spots marked by conspecifics and by heterospecifics. Our results indicate that early chemically-based experience with conspecific larvae is critical for the selection of the pupation sites in D. simulans and D. buzzatii, and that pupation site preferences of Drosophila larvae depend on species-specific chemical cues. These preferences can be modulate by the presence of larvae of the same or another species.  相似文献

Costelytra zealandica (White) lives within the soil throughout its life cycle, except for brief, crepuscular excursions to the surface by the adults to mate and feed. Larvae collected more than 18 weeks before 50% field pupation did not pupate unless they were artificially chilled. Such chilling had no significant effect on the percentage pupation of larvae collected after this time; it is assumed that these larvae had received sufficient chilling from their environment to induce pupation. Larger larvae were more likely to pupate than smaller larvae during the period 13–7 weeks before 50% field pupation. It is postulated that larvae remain quiescent until the soil temperature increases in the spring, and pupate only then. Such a process would explain how the adults of a population emerge at about the same time.  相似文献

The effect of temperature, photoperiod, artificial diet and water on the termination of diapause by larvae of the stem borer, Chilo partellus (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), was studied in the laboratory. Termination of diapause as indicated by pupation was affected mainly by a combination of high temperature and a long day photoperiod. Total darkness did not prevent termination of diapause and pupation occurred also in larvae which were never exposed to water. Long days accelerated pupation, but, under 16 h daylength, termination of diapause was faster than under constant illumination. Provision of artificial diet had no effect or slowed down pupation but water decreased the time to pupation. Under 28°C, 16 h daylength and availability of water, C. partellus diapausing larvae terminated diapause and pupated in about 9 days.  相似文献

Few examples exist where parasites manipulate host behaviour not to increase their transmission rate, but their own survival. Here we investigate fitness effects of parasitism by Asobara species in relation to the pupation behaviour of the host, Drosophila melanogaster . We found that Asobara citri parasitized larvae pupate higher in rearing jars compared to unparasitized controls, while A. tabida pupated on or near the medium. No change in pupation site was found for three other species. A follow-up experiment showed a non-random distribution of parasitized and unparasitized pupae over the different jar parts. To test the adaptiveness of these findings, we performed pupal transfer experiments. Optimum pupation sites were found to be different between host individuals; wall individuals survived better than bottom individuals, but bottom individuals did worse at the wall. Two parasitoid species that alter pupation site significantly showed high rates of diapause at their 'preferred' pupation site. For one of them, A. citri , pupation occurred at the optimal site for highest survival (emergence plus diapause). From literature we know that pupation height and foraging activity are genetically positively linked. Therefore, we implement a short assay for rover/sitter behavioural expression by measuring distance travelled during foraging after parasitism. For one out of three species, foraging activity was reduced, suggesting that this species suppresses gene expression in the for pathway and thereby reduces pupation height. The parasitoid species used here, naturally inhabit widely different environments and our results are partly consistent with a role for ecology in shaping the direction of parasite-induced changes to host pupation behaviour. More parasitoids are found on the wall of the rearing jar when they originate from dry climates, while parasitoids from wet climates pupate on the humid bottom.  相似文献

Abstract. Penultimate (fifth) and last (sixth) stadium larvae of Spodoptera mauritia Boisd. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) of various ages were injected with 0.5 μg, 1 μg or 2 μg azadirachtin and the effects on moulting and larval-pupal transformation were analysed. Higher doses (1 μg and 2 μg) of azadirachtin induced a prolongation of the fifth stadium in larvae treated on day 0 and day 1. The resulting sixth stadium larvae failed to pupate. Sixth stadium larvae injected with 0.5 μg, 1 μg or 2 μg azadirachtin showed prolongation of sixth larval period. Azadirachtin treatments completely prevented normal pupation in 'day 0' and 'day 1' larvae even though the percentage of pupation increased in treated larvae of other age groups. Injection of 2 fig azadirachtin prevented normal pupation in larvae of all age groups. Injection of 4 μg ecdysterone to sixth stadium larvae pre-treated with 1 fig azadirachtin (on day 0) promoted normal pupation in the majority of animals.  相似文献

We carried out field experiments to examine the variability of interspecific competition of mosquito larvae among microcosms in a bamboo grove (small spatial scale) and between bamboo groves at two sites, with single and multiple mosquito species (large spatial scale). Four types of microcosms that differed in capacity and litter input were set. In the hillside bamboo grove, where multiple species occurred, succession of the predominant species from Aedes albopictus to Tripteroides bambusa was observed in control microcosms from which no mosquito larvae were removed. Weekly removal of competitive species resulted in increased pupation of A. albopictus and adult body weight under both rich and poor resource conditions. In the late period of the experiments, the effect of competitor removal on pupation of A. albopictus was greater in deep containers that never dried than in shallow containers that were dried in the laboratory. The number of eggs showed a slight difference between competitor‐excluded and deep control microcosms. These results indicate that interspecific competition limits pupation of A. albopictus more strongly in deep containers than in shallow and drought‐prone containers.
Compared with the hillside site, the larval density of A. albopictus attained a higher density in the bamboo grove in the plain where no competitive species occurred, due to a higher oviposition rate. Lower rate of pupation and lower adult weight at the plain site than at the hillside site indicated that resource limitation was more severe at the plain site. Populations of A. albopictus at hillside and plain sites appeared to suffer from strong inter‐ and intraspecific competition, respectively. At the hillside site, the intensity of interspecific competition appeared to increase later in the breeding season, with a high larval density of T. bambusa. In contrast, at the plain site, intensity of intraspecific competition appeared to be reduced later in the breeding season with decreasing larval density of A. albopictus.  相似文献

The swallowtail butterfly Papilio xuthus Linné [Lepidoptera: Papilionidae] exhibits pupal protective color polyphenism. Interactions of various environmental factors on pupal coloration were analyzed in non-diapausing individuals. Under sufficient light (200lux), most pupating larvae became green pupae when the surface of the pupation site was smooth, while they became brown when the surface was rough. Tactile signals are the positive environmental factors causing induction of the brown pupal coloration. In dark boxes, the induction of the brown pupal coloration was easily induced even on a smooth surface, suggesting that light suppresses induction of brown coloration. Different colors of pupation sites did not affect pupal coloration under sufficient light. Environmental factors received during a critical period both before girdling and after girdling affected pupal coloration. When tactile signals received from rough surfaces reach threshold levels during pupation, brown pupal coloration is determined. Larvae reared under a daily periodicity of natural light formed a girdle at midnight, subsequently, the prepupae received strong daylight the following day. Under natural light most larvae produced brown pupae on rough surfaces and green pupae on smooth surfaces.  相似文献

While maintained under all combinations of three temperatures and two RH, fifth instar larvae of the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella were fed wheat treated with spores and crystals of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki. Larvae that had fed on wheat with the bacterial preparation contained higher concentrations of nodules in their haemocoel than did larvae fed on wheat without bacteria. Nodule concentrations in larvae fed untreated wheat were unaffected by temperature or relative humidity. Larvae fed treated wheat had higher nodule concentrations at 32 degrees C than at 15 and 23 degrees C, and higher nodule concentrations at a relative humidity of 85% than at 43%. The percentage of larvae that pupated was lower when larvae were fed the bacterial preparation, and was significantly higher at 23 degrees C than at 15 and 32 degrees C, regardless of whether larvae were fed bacteria or not. Less time was required for larvae to develop to pupation at higher temperatures and at higher humidity. Mean time to pupation was lower for bacteria-fed larvae than for those fed untreated wheat, and this appeared to be a result of truncation of the distribution of times to pupation because only rapidly developing larvae survived to pupation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Larval Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) (Noctuidae) parasitized by Chelonus sp. (near curvimaculatus ) (Braconidae) precociously initiated pupation during the penultimate fourth instar. The temporal sequence of developmental markers exhibited by parasitized T. ni closely matched the temporal sequence in normal, pupating larvae. The parasitized larvae did not complete pupation, but consistently stopped development at a stage recognizable by a certain set of markers. This halt was observed in hosts from which parasites emerged and from hosts which had been stung but from which no parasites emerged. Weight gain and food consumption by parasitized hosts were significantly lower than normal, although most reached the fourth instar at the same time as normal larvae. Measurement of head capsule widths indicated that the width in precociously pupating larvae was less than the critical width associated with attainment of the pupation instar of normal larvae.  相似文献

Abstract

Late-instar Aedes australis larvae were experimentally infected with Coelomomyces opifexi, and the subsequent development of the fungal parasite was studied. Five separate experiments involving 1190 infected larvae were conducted. Of these larvae, 114 continued development and pupated; 38 of them contained sporangia. Histological studies indicated that parasite development slowed down, if not ceased, following pupation of infected larvae, and the presence of sporangia in adults reflected the degree of advancement of infection in the larvae at pupation.  相似文献

Several studies have documented local adaptation by sedentary insects to individual phenotypes of their host plants. Here, I examined whether a similar phenomenon could be found in a mobile, specialized insect, the sumac flea beetle. Previous work has shown that sumac individuals differ in their suitability as hosts for these beetles and that differences have both an environmental and a genetic basis. Using beetle populations collected as eggs from eight different sumac clones along an east-west transect, a reciprocal transfer experiment was conducted to determine whether there was any evidence for local adaptation by beetles to individual plant clones or to site. Variables examined were larval survivorship past first instar, development time, weight at pupation and patterns of predation by enemies. While no evidence for local adaptation was found, there were significant effects of plant clone on which larvae developed, origin of the larval population and the interaction of these effects on larval performance. For larval weight at pupation, there was also some indication that trade-offs may exist in ability of larvae to use different host plant clones. In addition, there were significant environmental effects on several measures of larval performance. Predation rates differed by plant clone, but not by site or with respect to origin of larvae. While no evidence for local adaptation was found in this study, prerequisites for finding such patterns may exist in this system. Received: 23 May 1996 / Accepted: 26 September 1996  相似文献

Pyrrhalta viburni (Paykull), a new landscape pest in the United States, feeds in both the larval and adult stages on foliage of plants in the genus Viburnum. The insect is univoltine, with larvae active in spring and adults throughout the summer months. Experiments were conducted to determine the depth of pupation in the soil; the impact of substrate texture, moisture content, and temperature on pupation success; and ability of entomopathogenic nematodes to kill larvae when they enter the substrate to pupate. Larvae burrowed only a short distance into the substrate when pupating; 97-100% were found within the top 3 cm of a column of soil or sand and soil mixture in the laboratory. Larval mortality before pupation was low at 22 degrees C but considerably higher at 30 degrees C; at both temperatures, pupation success was lowest on a mixed substrate and higher (and equivalent) on sand or soil alone. Survivorship to adult was influenced by both temperature and substrate moisture content; at 22 degrees C, 56% percent of pupating larvae emerged as adults at 75% moisture content compared with only 25 at 25% moisture content. Emergence of adults was negligible at 30 degrees C, regardless of moisture content. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and Steinernema carpocapsae were very effective biocontrol agents in laboratory bioassays, reducing adult emergence by 76-100%, with nematode applications made before pupation being more effective than those made after pupation, and H. bacteriophora consistently (but not significantly) more effective than S. carpocapsae. Management methods that take advantage of pupation behaviors are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes the effects of the pH of the larval resource on the pupation height of two cosmopolitan species of Drosophila: D. melanogaster and D. hydei. The pH levels of artificial media were modified using solutions of acids (hydrochloric, acetic, and citric) and a positive relationship was found between pupation height and resource pH; i. e., the more acidic the resource, the closer the larvae pupated to the resource surface. The clearest trends were between pupation height and the final pH of the resource, the larvae apparently responding to the pH they encountered just before pupation commenced. When using natural resources a difference in pupation height was found between the types of fruits used but there was no obvious trend linking pupation height with pH. This suggests that some other environmental factor(s) was (were) overriding the effects of pH, and consequently resource pH may play only a minor role in determining pupation behavior in nature.  相似文献

在22~28℃和16~22℃变温条件下研究了水分对亚洲玉米螟Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenée)越冬幼虫存活、滞育解除及成虫生殖潜力的影响。结果表明:在越冬幼虫复苏后至化蛹阶段,水分是影响越冬幼虫完成滞育发育的关键因子,只有满足其饮水需求,才能解除滞育而化蛹。幼虫的存活和化蛹率随幼虫饮水后体重的增加而增加。幼虫化蛹的早晚受温度和水分的综合影响,在22~28℃下越冬幼虫化蛹进度较快,在复苏后35天时为最佳饮水时间,比在16~22℃下早5~10天。此阶段如能满足幼虫的需水量,幼虫死亡率低,化蛹率高,而只在滞育发育早期或后期饮水时,死亡率高,化蛹率低。同一变温条件下,其滞育发育因饮水时间的推迟而延长。因此可以推测春季温度偏高、干旱的气候条件不利于亚洲玉米螟越冬代的大发生,反之亦然。  相似文献

Teratocytes deriving from the serosal membrane of Cardiochiles nigriceps Viereck, obtained “in vitro” from embryos hatched on a semidefined medium, were injected at different numbers and in different developmental stages of nonparasitized Heliothis virescens (F.) last instar larvae. Host development was affected by teratocyte injections and the responses registered ranged from normal to complete inhibition of pupation, according to the number of teratocytes injected and the developmental stage of the larva at time of injection. Complete pupation failure was observed when teratocytes derived from 4C nigriceps embryos were injected into 1st day 5th instar (new-slender stage) host larvae. Complete pupation occurred when teratocytes from 2 embryos were injected into 3rd or 4th day 5th instars (burrow-digging or day 1 cell formation stage). Intermediate responses, such as the formation of pupal cuticle without ecdysis or with only partial ecdysis, were obtained with intermediate teratocyte numbers, or host developmental stages. All pupae derived from teratocyte injected larvae failed to develop into adults normally obtained from control injected larvae. The larval weight just before pupation was negatively affected only when teratocyte injections were performed on 1st day 5th instar H. virescens larvae. Teratocyte injections altered the hemolymph protein titer to a level similar to that occurring in parasitized larvae. At the same time the ecdysteroid titer was characterized by a late significant increase, which reached values almost 3 times greater than found in normally parasitized larvae, and also surpassed the highest values registered for nonparasitized larvae. Ligation of parasitized larvae between the meso- and metathorax demonstrated that when the prothoracic glands were excluded, there was almost no ecdysteroid production posterior to the ligation. Ligations performed on parasitized larvae to isolate parasitoid eggs before hatching in the last abdominal segments, demonstrated that only virus and venom determined a reduction of the ecdysteroid titer. On the basis of these results the possible role of teratocytes in affecting the biological activity of ecdysteroids is postulated and discussed in a wider context of host-parasitoid physiological interactions.  相似文献
