PurposeThe prevalence of Keshan disease (KD) is low and has reached controlled or eliminated levels even in counties that had a high KD prevalence in the past. Few nationwide surveys on selenium levels in KD areas have been conducted in the past 2 decades. We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the selenium levels and their association with KD control and prevention in areas where KD is prevalent.MethodsWe collected 2143 human-hair, 698 soil, 701 rice, 607 flour, 521 corn, and 330 other-food samples from 49 counties with KD and 19 non-KD counties of nine KD provinces of China. The selenium content of samples was examined with hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The difference in selenium levels between the KD and non-KD areas was analyzed. Cochran–Armitage trend tests were used to evaluate the association between selenium levels and KD control.ResultsThe selenium levels in human hair, soil, staple foods, and other foods in the KD areas (0.2996 mg/kg, 0.1380 mg/kg, 0.0190 mg/kg and 0.0076 mg/kg, respectively) were lower than those in the non-KD areas (0.3700 mg/kg, 0.1930 mg/kg, 0.0240 mg/kg and 0.0165 mg/kg, respectively). The Cochran–Armitage tests showed that there was a trend for the selenium standard ratio in the counties to increase in the order of KD uncontrolled, to controlled, to eliminated (Z = 2.229, P < 0.05).ConclusionThe residents in the KD areas were found to be selenium-deficient. Improving the supply of staple foods containing selenium levels exceeding 0.025 mg/kg and abundant foodstuffs might contribute to KD control and prevention.  相似文献

This study explores whether the declining prevalence of Keshan disease is associated with increasing selenium levels in Keshan disease areas in Heilongjiang province. Six counties endemic with Keshan disease and three non-endemic counties were selected as study areas. In each county, two townships and in each township one village were chosen in which to survey ten families about head hair, grain, and soil samples and to obtain demographic information. Selenium was measured with hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry. In each county endemic with Keshan disease, one of the villages was chosen to investigate the prevalence of the disease. We collected 534 head hair samples, 446 staple food samples, and 180 soil samples. The selenium levels of head hair and corn in the endemic counties were significantly lower than those in non-endemic counties. Family demographic information was homologous except for the composition of staple food. More residents in Keshan disease areas preferred flour and corn. The detection rate for latent Keshan disease had a significantly negative correlation with the corn selenium level in six counties endemic with Keshan disease. As the population in this region is still at risk for Keshan disease, selenium surveillance measures should be intensified.  相似文献

Kaschin-Beck disease (KBD) is an endemic osteoarthritis, and the etiology is closely related with levels of trace elements in the human body. Currently, it is clear that the selenium (Se) status of children in KBD areas is lower than that in non-KBD areas in the Tibetan Plateau, whereas role of other elements are yet unknown. This study aimed to assess some essential trace elements (Se, Mo, Mn, Zn, Fe, Cu, Co, and Sr) in children using scalp hair as a biomarker, and 157 samples from school children aged 8–14 years old were collected from both KBD and non-KBD areas in Shigatse, Tibet. Se and Mo were measured by inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and the other elements were determined by inductive coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Compared with the non-KBD areas, Se, Mo, Mn, Fe, Zn, Co, and Sr levels of children in KBD areas were found to be significantly different (P < 0.05); while in linear discriminant analysis, only Se and Zn were found to contribute to the KBD prevalence in the study area. The hair Se level of children in KBD areas ranged from 0.115 to 0.299 mg/kg, while in non-KBD areas it ranged from 0.135 to 0.519 mg/kg. The Zn content of children’s hair was between 83 and 207 mg/kg in KBD areas, while it was 37 and 219 mg/kg in non-KBD areas. Lower Se and higher Zn levels in children in KBD areas was found when compared with non-KBD groups. In addition, Mo levels were found to be different between KBD areas and non-KBD areas on the opposite side of the Yarlung Zangbo River, but no close relationship was shown because there was no difference compared with the non-KBD area on the same side of the river. Our observations suggest that Se deficiency is still an important factor for the occurrence and prevalence of KBD, while the relationship between Zn and KBD needs to be further explored in the Tibetan Plateau.  相似文献

BackgroundFew spatial studies on serum selenoprotein P (SELENOP) and Keshan disease (KD) have been reported at the county-level in Heilongjiang province, China. This study aimed to provide visualized spatial epidemiological evidence of selenium molecular marker in residents living in endemic areas for the precise assessment of prevention, control, and elimination of KD.MethodsUsing a spatial ecological study design, 587 subjects living in cities, townships, and rural areas of 50 KD endemic counties and 37 non-endemic counties in Heilongjiang province were investigated. The serum SELENOP levels of the participants were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Thematic maps were created, and spatial regression analysis was conducted using ordinary least squares.ResultsThe mean serum SELENOP level of the 587 subjects was 7.4 ± 3.0 μg/mL. The mean levels of serum SELENOP were higher in cities (7.4 ± 2.9 μg/mL) and townships (7.9 ± 3.2 μg/mL) than in rural areas (6.0 ± 3.0 μg/mL). The mean levels of serum SELENOP were trending towards high levels in non-endemic areas (7.4 ± 3.0 μg/mL) than in KD endemic areas (6.3 ± 3.3 μg/mL). Spatial regression analysis showed that the serum SELENOP level was positively correlated with the per capita gross domestic product.ConclusionSelenium deficiency may still exist in some KD endemic counties in Heilongjiang province, including Lingdong, Nenjiang, and Baiquan; these counties should be considered as key areas for precision prevention, control, and elimination of KD. Inclusion of selenium in the national surveillance of KD will provide more evidence for the assessment of KD elimination from a selenium nutrition perspective.  相似文献

Concentrations of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) were determined in 383 human hair samples and in 445 food samples purchased in 11 Chinese cities. The concentrations of Cu were 7.91, 5.39, 2.27 and 2.20 mg kg?1 and those of Zn were 47.2, 24.8, 52.8 and 30.2 mg kg?1 in vegetables, cereals, meat and fish, respectively. The overall mean concentrations of hair Cu and Zn were 8.97 and 128 mg kg?1, respectively. Hair Cu and Zn concentrations were higher in females than in males, especially in the 13–19 and 20–50 year age groups. Hair Cu concentration increased with increasing age and these changes occurred mainly in males. In contrast, 51–65 years old females had the lowest hair Zn concentrations. Residents of rural areas had similar hair Cu or Zn concentrations to people in urban areas. There were no significant correlations between hair concentration and food intake in terms of Cu and Zn among the cities. The results indicate that hair Cu and Zn concentrations and their changes with biological and environmental factors cannot be explained satisfactorily by the estimated food intakes in the cities sampled.  相似文献

Background

Dietary mineral deficiencies are widespread in Africa. Our previous studies in Malawi revealed population-level shortfalls in dietary calcium and selenium supply but adequate dietary magnesium (Mg) supply. Here we examine dietary Mg supply throughout Africa.

Methods

Food supply data from 1961 to 2007 were compiled using Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Food Balance Sheets (FBSs). Magnesium supply was estimated for each country using regional food Mg composition tables.

Results

Mean Mg supply in 2007 was 649 mg capita ?1 d?1, ranging from 188 mg d?1 in Eritrea to 1,828 mg d?1 in Burkina Faso. Magnesium supply was greater in West Africa than in other regions, was dominated by sorghum, maize and wheat and was correlated with calorie supply. The World Health Organization (WHO) Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) for Mg (217 mg capita ?1 d?1 for adult males) was exceeded in most countries. Using the EAR cut-point method, the risk of dietary Mg deficiency in Africa is <4 % and unlikely to be a major problem, assuming access to sufficient food and that phytic acid does not compromise Mg absorption.

Conclusions

Estimating Mg supply is highly sensitive to concentration data available for the primary staple crops. Given that soil factors profoundly affect crop Mg concentration, there is a need to increase the spatial resolution of food composition tables for the staple crops.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess hair selenium levels of liver patients suffering from hepatic simple steatosis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in central areas of China. Selenium was measured by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with the hydride generation system. The levels of selenium in healthy individuals ranged between 0.3 and 0.9 μg/g, and mean hair selenium levels in the male population and female population were 0.59?±?0.18 and 0.57?±?0.15 μg/g, respectively. These concentrations did not vary significantly (P?>?0.05) in relation to the gender. One hundred-eighteen individuals of both sexes aged between 15 and 60 years with hepatic simple steatosis and NASH were selected for this study. The mean and standard deviation of hair selenium concentrations observed in male and female patients with hepatic simple steatosis were 0.54?±?0.16 and 0.50?±?0.15 μg/g, respectively, while the mean and standard deviation of hair selenium concentrations observed in male and female patients with NASH were 0.40?±?0.14 and 0.41?±?0.12 μg/g. Analysis of t test showed a significant difference between NASH (P?<?0.001) patients in hair selenium concentrations when compared with controls.  相似文献

An experiment investigated the effect of different selenium supplementations on the antioxidant defence system and on the occurrence of muscle dystrophy in growing turkeys. Newly hatched male turkeys (B.U.T. Big 6) were divided into eight groups of 18 turkeys each and fed either a basal diet (selenium <0.010 mg/kg diet), or the basal diet supplemented with 0.10; 0.15; 0.20; 0.25; 0.30; 0.35 or 0.40 mg selenium/kg diet in the form of sodium selenate. Vitamin E was adequately supplemented in all diets. After 35 days, muscle damage parameters including aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase, creatine kinase M and B were significantly increased in the selenium deficient Group I. A significant reduction of weight gain, feed consumption and selenium dependent glutathione peroxidase activity was also observed in the liver of selenium deficient birds. The ratio of oxidised glutathione (GSSG) to total glutathione (tGSH) was substantially altered in the selenium deficient Group I as well as in Group II (0.10 mg selenium/kg feed). The activity of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) was not affected by selenium deficiency.  相似文献

Concentrations of selenium (Se), boron (B), and germanium (Ge) were determined in scalp hair of children with Kashin-Beck disease (KBD), in healthy children in KBD-disease endemic areas, and in healthy children in non-KBD areas. Mean Se, B, and Ge concentrations were low in children with KBD; in hair of healthy children in KBD areas, Se levels were normal but B and Ge levels were lower than in KBD-free areas. The hair levels of B and Ge were unaffected by selenium supplementation. It is suggested that B and Ge deficiency may be contributing factors in the etiology of KBD.  相似文献

A large number of studies have shown growing interest in the zinc (Zn) levels of serum and hair samples collected from patients with Kashin-Beck disease (KBD), an endemic chronic osteochondral disease. However, inconsistent conclusions regarding the serum and hair Zn levels have been made. The aim of this study is to assess and to explore the change in serum and hair Zn levels among KBD patients. Multiple databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database and Technology of Chongqing (VIP), were carefully searched for available studies up to January 13, 2017 in this integrated analysis. Standard mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was calculated using STATA 11.0. A total of 18 studies, involving 978 KBD cases and 1116 healthy controls, were collected in this analysis. Pooled analysis found the KBD patients had a higher hair Zn level and a lower serum Zn level than the healthy controls (hair Zn (μg/g), SMD = 0.030, 95% CI = ?0.315, 0.376; serum Zn (mg/L), SMD = ?0.069, 95%CI = ?0.924, 0.785). Meta-regression method and sensitivity analysis were utilized to analyze the heterogeneity of data. Positive correlations were separately identified between hair Zn level in KBD patients (r = 0.4639, P = 0.032) and controls (r = 0.4743, P = 0.012) and the survey year. No evidence of publication bias was observed. The available results suggest that increased hair Zn level and decreased serum Zn level are commonly found in KBD patients; however, the role of Zn in the etiology and pathogenesis of KBD could not yet be confirmed.  相似文献

Oxidative damage plays a key role in alcohol-mediated liver alterations. Selenium, a potent antioxidant, is decreased in alcoholics. This study was conducted to analyse if the supplementation with selenium may alter liver changes in a murine model fed ethanol and/or a 2 % protein-containing diet, following the Lieber–DeCarli design. Adult male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into eight groups which received the Lieber–DeCarli control diet; an isocaloric, 36 % ethanol-containing diet; an isocaloric, 2 % protein-containing diet; and an isocaloric diet containing 2 % protein and 36 % ethanol diet; and other similar four groups to which selenomethionine (1 mg/kg body weight) was added. After sacrifice (5 weeks later), liver fat amount and hepatocyte areas of pericentral and periportal cells were measured, and liver and serum selenium, activity of liver glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and liver malondialdehyde were determined. Ethanol-fed rats showed increased hepatocyte areas and fat accumulation especially when ethanol was added to a 2 % protein diet. Selenium caused a decrease in hepatocyte ballooning and liver fat amount, but an increase in GPX activity, and a marked increase in serum and liver selenium. The present study demonstrates that selenium, added to the diet of rats in the form of seleniomethionine, prevents the appearance of early signs of ethanol-mediated liver injury under the conditions of the Lieber–DeCarli experimental design.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken on male rats to elucidate the selenosis induced by sodium selenite and the role played by betaine in alleviating selenium toxicity. Rats were treated with sodium selenite (6 mg/kg body weight/day) with or without betaine (240 mg/kg body weight/day). Selenotoxicosis was evident from the elevated plasma levels of total bilirubin, transaminases, and alkaline phosphatase activities. Moreover, the total protein levels decreased, and this decrease associated with a decreased albumin level, whereas the globulin level increased in selenium-intoxicated rats. The development of selenosis corresponded well with the induction of oxidative stress evident from decrease of total thiol level and glutathione content. Furthermore, activities of glutathione reductase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, catalase, and paraoxonase-1 were decreased in selenium-treated rats. In contrast, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were increased by excess selenium administration compared with control animals. As well, malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl were elevated in rats treated with selenium. Supplementation of betaine simultaneously with selenium caused less marked alteration in the investigated parameters. Betaine attenuated the selenotoxicosis by restoring thiol levels that preserve enzymatic antioxidants activity and attenuate the oxidation of lipids and proteins.  相似文献

The cyanogenic potentials and residual cyanide contents of local cassava parenchyma and their locally processed food products in southeastern Nigeria were studied. Seven species of cassava locally grown and four main food products from them were analyzed colorimetrically for their cyanide contents. Results of the analyses indicated that five of the species contain cyanide potentials between 50 and 100 mg HCN/kg fresh weight while only one contains cyanogens level greater than 100 mg HCN/kg fresh weight. Of the cassava products analyzed, two contained cyanide above the level recommended by the WHO/FAO (10 mg HCN/kg). The result raises concern as these cassava products constitute about 80–90% of the diet of the local people and the facts known about cyanide poisoning from intake of high cyanide containing food.  相似文献

Dermatophytoses are considered to be one of the major public health problems in the world and are among the most commonly diagnosed skin diseases in Iran. In spite of improved personal hygiene and living environment, dermatophytosis continues to spread and persist. To determine the prevalence of dermatophytosis and their etiologic agents in Mashhad (Iran), five hundred and sixty patients suspected to have fungal infection were studied. Subjects who participated in this study were 330 males and 230 females ranged in age from 4 months to 70 years with a mean age of about 25.5 years. Clinical materials including skin scraping, hair and scalp sample, nail clipping and subungual debris were collected. All of the specimens were assessed by direct examination and culture. Of 560 patients, 166 (29.6 %) had dermatophytosis. The types of tinea according to anatomical areas were as follows: tinea corporis (33.1 %), tinea capitis (32.5 %), tinea manuum (17.5 %), tinea cruris (10.2 %), tinea pedis (5.4 %), tinea unguium (0.6 %) and tinea barbae (0.6 %). Trichophyton verrucosum was the most prevalent species followed by Trichophyton violaceum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The prevalence of dermatophytosis in males was higher than in females. Based on a review of published studies from different parts of Iran, there are regional differences in the incidence of dermatophytosis. Epidermophyton floccosum has been the most prevalent species, and Microsporum canis has been isolated less than from the other countries.  相似文献

To clarify the relationship between the soil selenium distribution and its bioavailability with the distribution of Kashin–Beck disease (KBD) endemic areas on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, samples of natural soil (0–20 cm), cultivated topsoil, and main crops of the region (highland barley) were collected at different altitudes according to topographical and geomorphological features in both KBD and non-KBD areas of Songpan County. These samples were used for determination and analysis of total selenium content in soil and highland barley and available selenium that can be absorbed and utilized by plants. The results showed that the average total selenium content of natural and cultivated topsoil in KBD areas was lower than that in non-KBD areas (natural soil, P?=?0.061; cultivated soil, P?=?0.002), which is in agreement with the geographical distributions of selenium in other KBD-affected areas. However, the total soil selenium content exhibits certain micro-spatial distribution features, namely, the total selenium content in some endemic areas was significantly higher than that of non-KBD areas. This result was contrary to the general distribution that total selenium content in a KBD-affected area is lower than that in a non-KBD area. We further studied the extraction rate and content of soil selenium in six different fractions. The results indicated that the content and extraction rate of available selenium in KBD-affected areas were significantly lower than those in non-KBD areas. There is a distinct positive correlation between plant-available selenium and highland barley selenium (r?=?0.875, P?=?0.001) and a distinct negative correlation with altitude (r?=??0.801, P?=?0.010). Therefore, in KBD endemic areas, the selenium content in crops decreases as the available selenium content in soil decreases and is closely related to the geographical environment features (such as altitude and precipitation). These results suggest that the soil available selenium and ecological features are important factors that restrict the dietary selenium flux for residents in KBD endemic areas of the Tibetan Plateau, providing a theoretical and experimental basis for implementing agricultural measures to regulate the ecological cycle of the selenium flux in the KBD endemic area.  相似文献

Lithium is an essential trace element, widely used in medicine and its application is often long-term. Despite beneficial effects, its administration can lead to severe side effects including hyperparathyroidism, renal and thyroid disorders. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the influence of lithium and/or selenium treatment on magnesium, calcium and silicon levels in rats’ organs as well as the possibility of using selenium as an adjuvant in lithium therapy. The study was performed on rats divided into four groups (six animals each): control-treated with saline; Li-treated with Li2CO3 (2.7 mg Li/kg b.w.); Se-treated with Na2SeO3·H2O (0.5 mg Se/kg b.w.); Se + Li-treated simultaneously with Li2CO3 and Na2SeO3·H2O (2.7 mg Li/kg b.w. and of 0.5 mg Se/kg b.w., respectively). The administration was performed in form of water solutions by stomach tube once a day for 3 weeks. In the organs (liver, kidney, brain, spleen, heart, lung and femoral muscle) the concentrations of magnesium, calcium and silicon were determined. Magnesium was increased in liver of Se and Se + Li given rats. Lithium decreased tissue Ca and co-administration of selenium reversed this effect. Silicon was not affected by any treatment. The beneficial effect of selenium on disturbances of calcium homeostasis let suggest that further research on selenium application as an adjuvant in lithium therapy is worth being performed.  相似文献

Valproic acid (VPA) is an antiepileptic drug, which its usage is limited due to its hepatotoxicity. The present study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se), necessary trace elements, against VPA-induced hepatotoxicity in Wistar rats. The animals were divided into five groups: control, VPA 200 mg/kg, VPA + Zn (100 mg/kg), VPA + Se (100 mg/kg), and VPA + Zn + Se. The administration of VPA for four consecutive weeks resulted in decrease in serum level of Zn in rats. Also, an increase in liver marker enzymes (ALT and AST) and also histological changes in liver tissue were shown after VPA administration. Oxidative stress was evident in VPA group by increased lipid peroxidation (LPO), protein carbonyl (PCO), glutathione (GSH) oxidation, and reducing total antioxidant capacity. Zn and Se (100 mg/kg) administration was able to protect against deterioration in liver enzyme, abrogated the histological change in liver tissue, and suppressed the increase in oxidative stress markers. Zn and combination of Zn plus Se treatment showed more protective effects than Se alone. These results imply that Zn and Se should be suggested as effective supplement products for the prevention of VPA-induced hepatotoxicity.  相似文献

This investigation was conducted to survey the levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn) in polished rice collected at supermarkets located in Hengyang, China. The surveyed rice samples were grouped according to their production areas into four different groups—Hunan, Jiangxi, Jilin, and Thailand. The data showed that the highest means of Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, and Mn contents were in rice samples produced from Hunan (0.215 mg/kg), Thailand (0.537 mg/kg), Hunan (0.348 mg/kg), Jiangxi (2.472 mg/kg), Thailand (17.259 mg/kg), and Jinlin (9.326 mg/kg), respectively. Average daily intake dose for the six elements through consumption of rice was lower than the oral reference dose. Although the hazard quotient values for all six elements were <1.0, hazard index values in all the production areas (except Thailand) were >1.0, and cancer risk (CR) and total CR values were >10?4, respectively. Certainly, there are inherent limitations for these health risk values, including actual ingestion rate, exposure duration, and bioavailability of heavy metals. These results indicate that long-term heavy metal exposure by consumption of rice in Hengyang could pose both potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to the local residents.  相似文献

Little is known about the influence of subchronic cadmium exposure on apoptosis in the immune organs of birds and the protective effects on apoptosis by selenium against cadmium. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of subchronic cadmium exposure on nitric oxide and apoptosis in the immune organs of chicken and the protective roles of selenium against cadmium-induced apoptosis. Two hundred ten 30-day-old chickens were randomly assigned to three groups and were fed a basal diet, cadmium?+?selenium (as 150 mg of CdCl2 per kg of diet?+?10 mg of Na2SeO3 per kg of diet ) or cadmium (as 150 mg of CdCl2 per kg of diet) in basic diets for 15, 30, 45, and 60 days. Then, the production of nitric oxide, messenger RNA (mRNA level), and the activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase, ultrastructural changes, TUNEL assay, and flow cytometric analysis of apoptosis and Bcl-2 and p53 mRNA levels in the immune organs were examined. The results showed that cadmium exposure caused ultrastructural damage and increased production of nitric oxide, mRNA level, and activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase, the degree, and the number of apoptotic cells in a time-dependent manner. Cadmium exposure decreased Bcl-2 mRNA level and increased p53 mRNA level in a time-dependent manner. Selenium supplementation during dietary cadmium reduced the production of nitric oxide, the mRNA level, and activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase, ultrastructural damage, and apoptosis in the immune organs of chicken. It indicated that cadmium induced nitric oxide-mediated apoptosis of immune organs, and selenium played protective effects against cadmium-induced apoptosis in the immune organs of chickens.  相似文献
