The genus Enterococcus belong to the genera of bacteria that produce lactic acid and can confer health benefits to living organisms. Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for humans and animals. Thirty-six Enterococcus species isolated from dairy products were screened for Se(IV) sorption capacity for use as a probiotics in animal nutrition. Several isolates grew luxuriantly and significantly removed Se(IV) from Se(IV) amended medium. Two isolates, LAB 14 and LAB 18, identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis as Enterococcus faecalis (98% nucleotide sequence similarity) and Enterococcus faecium (97% nucleotide sequence similarity), respectively, were selected for further studies. The two isolates grew optimally and removed selenium at initial pH 7.0. Optimum removal of Se(IV) from the medium was recorded at 25 °C. Time course studies showed that after 8 h of incubation LAB 14 and LAB 18 cultures displayed the highest biomass production and Se(IV) bioremoval and most selenite in culture depleted in 24 h. At initial concentrations of 10 mg L−1 and 60 mg L−1, E. faecium (LAB 18) removed 9.91 mg L−1 and 59.70 mg L−1, respectively after 24 h. Similar Se(IV) bioremoval capacity was recorded with E. faecalis (LAB 14). Substantial amount of Se was detected in biomass of E. faecium (0.4599 mg g−1 of dry weight) and E. faecalis (0.4759 mg g−1 of dry weight). The significant uptake and transformation of Se(IV) by the Enterococcus species observed in this study suggest that they can be used to deliver dietary Se through feed augmentation with Se(IV)-enriched Enterococcus biomass.  相似文献

Gut microbiota exerts a fundamental role in human health and increased evidence supports the beneficial role of probiotic microorganisms in the maintenance of intestinal health. Enterococcus durans LAB18S was previously isolated from soft cheese and showed some desirable in vitro probiotic properties, for that reason its genome was sequenced and evaluated for genes that can be relevant for probiotic activity and are involved in selenium metabolism. Genome sequencing was performed using the Illumina MiSeq System. A variety of genes potentially associated with probiotic properties, including adhesion capability, viability at low pH, bile salt resistance, antimicrobial activity, and utilization of prebiotic fructooligosaccharides (FOS) were identified. The strain showed tolerance to acid pH and bile salts, exhibited antimicrobial activity and thrived on prebiotic oligosaccharides. Six genes involved in selenium metabolism were predicted. Analysis of the SECIS element showed twelve known selenoprotein candidates. E. durans LAB18S was the only food isolate showing absence of plasmids, virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes, when compared with other 30 E. durans genomes. The results of this study provide evidence supporting the potential of E. durans LAB18S as alternative for probiotic formulations.  相似文献

Nine lactic acid bacteria strains showing bacteriocin-like activity were isolated from various fresh fish viscera. The following species were identified based on 16S rDNA sequences: Enterococcus durans (7 isolates), Lactococcus lactis (1) and Enterococcus faecium (1). These strains were active against Listeria innocua and other LAB. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analyses showed four major patterns for the E. durans species. PCR analyses revealed a nisin gene in the genome of the Lc. lactis strain. Genes coding enterocins A, B and P were found in the genome of the E. faecium isolate. Enterocins A and B genes were also present in the genome of E. durans GM19. Hence, this is the first report describing E. durans strains producing enterocins A and B. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed that the purified bacteriocin produced by the E. durans GMT18 strain had an exact molecular mass of 6,316.89 Da. This bacteriocin was designated as durancin GMT18. Edman sequencing failed to proceed; suggesting that durancin GTM18 may contain terminal lanthionine residues. Overall, the results obtained revealed the presence of a variety of enterococci in Mediterranean fish viscera, as evidenced by their genetic profiles and abilities to produce different bacteriocins. These strains could be useful for food biopreservation or as probiotics.  相似文献

Background and aims

Selenium is an essential micro-nutrient for animals, humans and microorganisms; it mainly enters food chains through plants. This study proposes to explore effect of inorganic Se forms on its uptake and accumulation in Zea mays.

Methods

Zea mays was grown in a controlled-atmosphere chamber for 2 weeks in a hydroponic solution of low-concentration selenium (10 μg/L (i.e.0.12 μM) or 50 μg/L (i.e. 0.63 μM) of Se). For each concentration, four treatments were defined: control (without selenium), selenite alone, selenate alone and selenite and selenate mixed.

Results

At low concentrations, selenium did not affect the biomass production of Zea mays. However, for both concentrations, Se accumulation following a selenite-only treatment was always higher than with selenate-only. Moreover, in the selenate-only treatment, Se mainly accumulated in shoots whereas in the selenite-only treatment, Se was stocked more in the roots. Interactions between selenate and selenite were observed only at the higher concentration (0.63 μM of selenium in the nutrient solution).

Conclusions

Se form and concentration in the nutrient solution strongly influenced the absorption, allocation and metabolism of Se in Zea mays. Selenate seems to inhibit selenite absorption by the roots.  相似文献

The trace mineral selenium (Se) is currently in demand for health supplements for human and animal nutrition. In the present study, 25 isolates of Lactobacillus species of human origin from Indian population were screened for their ability to uptake and accumulate Se in a more bioavailable form. Total Se accumulated by cells was measured by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICPES) after wet digestion of Se-enriched cultures. Ten out of 25 isolates grew luxuriantly, as red pigmented colonies, on medium amended with different concentrations of sodium selenite. All the strains when grown in a culture medium supplemented with 10 μg/mL sodium selenite (corresponding to 4.5 μg/mL Se) resulted in Se accumulation in the range of 129.5 to 820.0 μg/g of dry weight (d.w.) as measured using the ICPES method. Elemental Se produced due to reduction of sodium selenite by bacteria was seen as irregular globules under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Out of all the tested cultures, Lactobacillus reuteri NCDC77 was found to have the greatest ability to uptake Se (28.8 % of inorganic Se in medium) and total Se accumulated was up to 820 μg/g d.w., significantly higher than that of control (742.5 μg/g d.w.). The findings of present study indicate that lactobacilli from human sources have the ability for uptake and accumulation of Se, and the prolific strain has the potential to be explored as an alternative source of organic dietary Se.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted in a 2?×?2?+?1 factorial arrangement based on a completely randomized design to evaluate the effects of different sources of selenium (Se) on performance, blood metabolites, and nutrient digestibility in male lambs on a barley-based diet. The first trial lasted for 70 days and consisted of 30 lambs (35.6?±?2.6 kg mean body weight, about 4–5 months of age) which were randomly allotted to five treatments including: (1) basal diet (containing 0.06 mg Se/kg DM; control) without supplementary Se, (2) basal diet?+?0.20 mg/kg Se as sodium selenite (SeS 0.20), (3) basal diet?+?0.40 mg/kg Se as sodium selenite (SeS 0.40), (4) basal diet?+?0.20 mg/kg Se as selenium yeast (SeY 0.20), and (5) basal diet?+?0.40 mg/kg Se as selenium yeast (SeY 0.40). For the second trial, four lambs from each group of experiment 1 were randomly allocated to individual metabolic cages for 14 days to measure the effects of dietary Se on nutrient digestibility. The results revealed that there were no significant differences for average daily gain, average daily feed intake, feed/gain ratio, hematological parameters (packed cell volume, red blood cell, white blood cell, and hemoglobin values), serum total protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate amino transferase, alkaline phosphatase, and creatine phosphokinase due to supplementation of different amounts and sources of Se in lambs. Dietary Se supplementation significantly improved (P?<?0.001) glutathione peroxidase activity in blood. Furthermore, at the end of the trial, serum tri-iodothyronine (T3) amount also increased (P?<?0.05), while serum thyroxine (T4) amount decreased (P?<?0.05). Digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber increased (P?<?0.05) by Se yeast supplementation. It may be concluded that supplementation of Se in lambs had no significant effect on performance and blood hematology, but increased blood glutathione peroxidase activity and serum T3 amount and decreased serum T4 amount as compared to non-supplemented control lambs. Furthermore, Se yeast improved nutrient digestibility in lambs.  相似文献

The distribution and speciation of selenium (Se) in freshwater fish (muscle and liver tissue) from lakes in Argentina was investigated. Three introduced species, brown trout (Salmo trutta), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), and one native species, creole perch (Percichthys trucha), were investigated. Values for total selenium in muscle ranged from 0.66 to 1.61 μg/g, while in the liver, concentrations were much higher, from 4.46 to 73.71 μg/g on a dry matter basis. Separation of soluble Se species (SeCys2, selenomethionine (SeMet), SeMeSeCys, selenite and selenate) was achieved by ion exchange chromatography and detection was performed by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry. The results showed that in fish muscle, from 47 to 55 % of selenium was soluble and the only Se species identified was SeMet, which represented around 80 % of soluble Se, while in the liver, the amount of soluble Se ranged from 61 to 76 % and the percentage of species identified (SeMet and SeCys2) was much lower and ranged from 8 to 17 % of soluble Se.  相似文献

Dietary selenium (Se) can be supplemented from organic or inorganic sources and this may affect Se metabolism and functional outcome such as antioxidative status and immune functions in dairy cows. A feeding trial was performed with 16 Holstein-Friesian dairy cows fed with a total mixed ration (0.18 mg Se/kg dry matter (DM)) either without Se supplement (Control, n = 5), or with Se from sodium selenite (Group SeS, n = 5) or Se yeast (Group SeY, n = 6). In Groups SeS and SeY, the Se supplementation amounted to an additional intake of 4 mg Se and 6 mg Se/d during gestation and lactation, respectively. The effect of both Se sources was characterised by milk Se and antioxidant levels, and the phenotyping and functional assessment of phagocytic activity of milk immune cells. Se yeast has been found to increase (p ≤ 0.001) the milk Se and antioxidant levels markedly compared to the control group. The experimental treatment did not affect the immune parameters of the cows. Lymphocyte subpopulations and phagocytosis activity of neutrophilic granulocytes were affected neither by the Se intake nor by the two different dietary supplements. It can be concluded that sodium selenite and Se yeast differ considerably in their effects on antioxidant status in dairy cows. However, the basal dietary Se concentration of 0.18 mg/kg DM seemed to be high enough for the measured immune variables.  相似文献

In this study, the removal and reduction of selenite [Se(IV)] by growing Aspergillus sp. J2 were investigated. The lag phase, growth rate and biomass of J2 was not significantly influenced by the presence of 100 mg/L Se(IV). A rapid Se(IV) removal process took place from the 3rd to the 4th day during the growth of J2. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses showed that the Se(IV) did not cause any visible effects on cell morphology and the reduced amorphous elemental selenium [Se(0)] nanoparticles were mainly on the surface of the mycelial cell walls. The macromolecules containing amine groups also interact with Se(IV) and could play an important role in Se(IV) removal by J2.  相似文献

Pseudomonas seleniipraecipitans grows in the presence of high levels of selenite and selenate and reduces both oxyanions to elemental selenium (Se0), a property that may make P. seleniipraecipitans useful as an inoculant for biobarriers designed to remove selenite or selenate from ground or surface waters. An earlier study showed that P. seleniipraecipitans nitrate reductase reduced selenate to Se0, but failed to identify the protein(s) involved in selenite reduction. This study used ammonium sulfate precipitation, hydrophobic interaction chromatography, and native PAGE to isolate two electrophoretic gel regions, identified as bands A and B that showed selenite-reductase-activity. Proteomics was used to identify the proteins present in those regions. Glutathione reductase (GR) was detected in the A-band; based on this information, Saccharomyces cerevisiae GR, obtained from a commercial source, was evaluated and found to have selenite-reductase-activity, confirming that GR can reduce selenite to Se0. Proteomics was also used to detect the proteins present in the B-band and thioredoxin reductase (ThxR) was detected as a B-band protein; based on this information, E. coli ThxR, obtained from a commercial source, was evaluated and found to have selenite-reductase-activity, confirming that ThxR can reduce selenite to elemental selenium. Thus, evidence presented in this study shows that S. cerevisiae GR and E. coli ThxR can reduce SeO3 2? to Se0 and strongly suggests that P. seleniipraecipitans GR and ThxR can also reduce SeO3 2? to Se0.  相似文献

A 6-week trial was conducted to compare the effect of selenium (Se) from hydroponically produced Se-enriched kale sprout (HPSeKS), sodium selenite (SS), and Se-enriched yeast (SeY) in laying hens. A total of 144 40-week-old hens were randomly divided into four groups, according to a completely randomized design. Each group consisted of four replicates with nine hens per replicate. The dietary treatments were T1 (basal diet) and T2, T3, and T4 (basal diets supplemented with 0.30 mg Se/kg from SS, SeY, and HPSeKS, respectively). Results showed that Se supplement did not affect (p > 0.05) productivity and egg quality. Hens fed Se from HPSeKS and SeY exhibited higher (p < 0.05) Se bioavailability than hens fed Se from SS. Whole egg Se concentration of hens fed Se from HPSeKS was similar (p > 0.05) to that of hens fed Se from SeY, but higher (p < 0.05) than that of hens fed Se from SS. However, the breast muscle and heart tissue Se concentrations of hens fed Se from SS, SeY, and HPSeKS were not different (p > 0.05). The results of this trial demonstrated that Se from HPSeKS and SeY was more efficient than Se from SS on Se bioavailability and whole egg Se concentration in laying hens.  相似文献

The uptake of dietary selenium (about 3.5 mg/kg AF dry wt) as selenomethionine, selenocystine, selenite, selenate, and fish selenium in the plasma and red blood cells (RBC) of the oystercatcher has been investigated. The birds received the various selenium compounds subsequently, for at least 9 wk. After dietary supplementation of selenocystine, selenite, and selenate, plasma selenium was about 350 μg/L and RBC selenium 2.1 mg/kg dry wt. After supplementation of selenomethionine, the plasma concentration increased to 630 μg/L, and the RBC concentration to 4.1 mg/kg dry wt. When the fodder contained 3.1 mg/kg fish Se, an average plasma and RBC concentration of 415 μg/L and 14.4 mg/kg dry wt, respectively, was measured. The maximal increase of the selenium concentration in the plasma was attained at first sampling, 14 d after a change in dietary selenium (selenomethione or fish Se); the uptake seemed to be a concentration-regulated process. RBC concentrations (γ in mg/kg dry wt) increased with time (X in d) according toY=a?be?cX . Fifty percent of the total increase was attained within 17d, suggesting that diffusion into the RBC played a role. The selenium concentration in the plasma was positively correlated with the (fish) Se concentration in the fodder; the RBC concentration (60 d after the change in diet) was positively correlated with the plasma concentration. When the diet contained fish Se, the blood selenium concentrations of the captive birds were similar to the concentrations measured in field birds. Fish Se is a yet undetermined selenium compound. The present experiment showed that fish Se differed from selenomethionine, selenocystine, selenite, or selenate in uptake from the food and uptake in the RBC.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Se from hydroponically produced Se-enriched kale sprout (HPSeKS) on productive performance, egg quality, and Se concentrations in egg and tissue of laying quails. Two-hundred quails, 63 days of age, were divided into four groups. Each group consisted of five replicates and each replicate had ten birds, according to a completely randomized design. The experiment lasted for 6 weeks. The dietary treatments were T1 (control diet), T2 (control diet plus 0.2 mg Se/kg from sodium selenite), T3 (control diet plus 0.2 mg Se/kg from Se-enriched yeast), T4 (control diet plus 0.2 mg Se/kg from HPSeKS). The findings revealed that productive performance and egg quality of quails were not altered (p?>?0.05) by Se sources. Whole egg Se concentrations of quails fed Se from HPSeKS and Se-enriched yeast were higher (p?<?0.05) than that of quails fed the control diet. Breast muscle Se concentrations in quails fed Se from HPSeKS were higher (p?<?0.05) than that of quails fed Se from sodium selenite and Se-enriched yeast. Heart tissue Se concentrations of quails fed Se from Se-enriched yeast and HPSeKS were similar (p?>?0.05), but higher (p?<?0.05) than that of quails fed Se from sodium selenite. The results reveal that Se from HPSeKS did not change the performance and egg quality of quails. The effectiveness of Se from HPSeKS was comparable to that of Se-enriched yeast, which was higher than that of Se from sodium selenite.  相似文献

It is well known that oxidative stress plays an important role in the etiology of epilepsy. We investigated effects of selenium (Se) and topiramate (TPM) combination supplementation on antioxidant and oxidant values in control and patients with epilepsy and refractory epilepsy. For the aim, we used control (n?=?19), epilepsy + TPM (n?=?19), epilepsy + TPM + Se (n?=?15) groups. We also used control (n?=?15), refractory epilepsy (n?=?15), and refractory epilepsy + Se (n?=?8) groups. TPM (0.2 mg/daily) and Se, as sodium selenite (twice daily with 0.1 mg doses), were orally supplemented to the patients for 45 days. Erythrocyte lipid peroxidation levels were higher in refractory epilepsy groups than in control although its level and seizure numbers were decreased in TPM and TPM + Se supplemented groups of the patients. The erythrocyte reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), plasma total antioxidant status (TAS), and vitamin E concentration in refractory epilepsy group were lower than in control. However, the erythrocyte and plasma TAS, erythrocyte GSH and GSH-Px, and plasma vitamins A and C values were increased either by Se or Se + TPM in epilepsy and refractory epilepsy groups. There were no effects of TPM and Se on plasma β-carotene values in the groups. In conclusion, TPM and selenium caused protective effects on the epilepsy and refractory epilepsy-induced oxidative injury by inhibiting free radical production and supporting antioxidant redox system.  相似文献

Despite the well-established toxicity of cadmium (Cd) to animals and the ameliorative effects of selenium (Se), some specific mechanisms in the chicken ovary are not yet clarified. To explore the mechanism by which the toxicity effect of Cd is induced and explore the effect of supranutritional Se on Cd toxicity in female bird reproduction, forty-eight 50-day-old Isa Brown female chickens were divided randomly into four groups. Group I (control group) was fed the basic diet containing 0.2 mg/kg Se. Group II (Se-treated group) was fed the basic diet supplemented with sodium selenite (Na2SeO3), and the total Se content was 2 mg/kg. Group III (Se + Cd-treated group) was fed the basic diet supplemented with Na2SeO3; the total Se content was 2 mg/kg, and it was supplemented with 150 mg/kg cadmium chloride (CdCl2). Group IV (Cd-treated group) was with the basic diet supplemented with 150 mg/kg CdCl2. The Cd, estradiol (E2), and progestogen (P4) contents changed after subchronic Cd exposure in chicken ovarian tissue; subsequently, oxidative stress occurred and activated the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) pathway to induce apoptosis. Further, Se decreased the accumulation of Cd in ovarian tissue, increased the E2 and P4 contents, alleviated oxidative stress, and reduced apoptosis via the ER stress pathway. The present results demonstrated that Cd could induce apoptosis via the ER stress pathway in chicken ovarian tissue and that Se had a significant antagonistic effect. These results are potentially valuable for finding a strategy to prevent Cd poisoning.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cadmium [Cd(II) as cadmium chloride], selenium [Se(IV) as sodium selenite] and their mixtures on phenolic compounds (PCs) and antioxidant activity (AOx) in Lepidium sativum. The biomass fractions corresponding to free (F1), soluble glycoside-bound (F2) and cell wall ester-bound phenolics (F3) were obtained for each treatment and PCs were screened by gas chromatography (GC-FID); F1 and F2 fractions were also analyzed by liquid chromatography with UV and fluorimetric detection. The treated plants presented different profiles of PCs as compared to controls, specifically in F1 and F2 fractions; the plant response was element-, and concentration-dependent. The cultures challenged with Cd(II) up to 5 mg L?1, presented higher AOx with respect to controls, and this increase was associated with glycoside-bound PCs, whereas for Se(IV) the increase of AOx was less marked and associated with free PCs. Under simultaneous exposure to Cd(II) + Se(IV) (0.5–2.0 mg L?1 each), the AOx values were relatively constant and lower than those found in the presence of Se(IV) or Cd(II) alone, providing further evidence of the protective role of Se(IV) against stress imposed by Cd(II) in this plant species. The evaluation of AOx of individual PCs and the results of principal component analysis enabled to attain several relationships among exposure conditions, antioxidant activity, free- and glycoside-bound phenolic compounds.  相似文献

Enterococcus durans E204 is a bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance (BLIS)-producing strain. It was isolated from camel’s milk in Morocco. Enterococcus durans shows interesting features such as the susceptibility to vancomycin and other clinically relevant antibiotics. In this study, we have shown that E. durans lacks haemolytic activity. Its performance as a protective culture was evaluated against Listeria monocytogenses CECT 4032 in goat jben, a Moroccan traditional fresh cheese. Ten liters of goats’ milk, originating from one farm in M’diq (northern Morocco), were pasteurised and used to make 12 small cheeses. Enterococcus durans E204 at approximately 106 CFU/ml was added in the preparation of six jben samples and six others were made without E. durans. Before packaging, two groups of four jbens were contaminated with brine solutions at 106 and 104 CFU/ml of L. monocytogenes. During storage, E. durans E204 was given time to multiply in jben and produce BLIS. In jben batches prepared with E. durans, Listeria counts decreased progressively from the beginning of storage and were undetectable at 8 and 6 days post-contamination with 106 and 104 CFU/ml, respectively. On the other hand, a substantial amount of BLIS activity (240 AU/ml) was detected from the start of the experiment and was stable during the storage. These data suggest that E. durans E204 can be used as a protective culture to inhibit growth of L. monocytogenes in cheese.  相似文献

The tissue uptake and distribution of injected [75Se]-sodium selenite as a variance with time and as influenced by dietary selenium status was followed in the tissues of Japanese quails,Coturnix coturnix japonica. Quails maintained on a low selenium semipurified (basal) diet and basal diets supplemented with 0.2 and 2.0 ppm selenium as sodium selenite were injected intraperitonially with75Se as sodium selenite (2.8 microcuries). The injected75Se was monitored in blood, liver, kidney, heart, and testis at 24, 72, and 144 h after injection. Maximal uptake of the injected75Se was observed in tissues of quails maintained on basal diet. The uptake of75Se in tissues in general was determined by the dietary Se status. Among the organs studied, kidney had the maximal level of75Se, 0.2 ppm (μg/g wet tissue) followed by liver, testis, and heart, but testis had the maximal level when the level per milligram of protein was considered, about 3.0 ng/mg protein, followed by liver, kidney, and heart. About 10–20% of the tissue75Se was located in the mitochondria and 50–60% in the post-mitochondrial supernatant fractions in all dietary Se levels. Significant incorporation of75Se in the mitochondrial membrane was observed. The percent distribution ratio between the membrane and matrix fractions of the mitochondria remained constant at all dietary Se levels which, in liver was 65∶35, in kidney 55∶45, and in testis 75∶25. However, in heart mitochondria, the distribution of75Se between membrane and matrix varied with dietary Se status, the ratio being 82∶18 in the basal group, and 72∶28 and 41∶59 in the 0.2 and 2.0 ppm Se-supplemented groups, respectively. This is indicative of a preferential uptake of75Se in the mitochondrial membrane in conditions of deficiency. About 40–60% of the mitochondrial membrane-associated75Se was released upon Triton treatment in all the organs. Of the membrane-bound75Se, about 10–15% was acid-labile in liver and kidney and 25% in the heart tissue. Possibilities of tissue specific roles, especially in the heart mitochondrial membrane-related processes, are indicated for selenium.  相似文献

Over 2 years, 32 beef cows nursing calves in southwest Arkansas were randomly selected from a herd of 120 that were managed in six groups and were assigned to six 5.1-ha bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) pastures. Treatments were assigned to pastures (two pastures/treatment) and cows had ad libitum access to one of three free-choice minerals: (1) no supplemental selenium (Se), (2) 26 mg of supplemental Se from sodium selenite per kilogram, and (3) 26 mg of supplemental Se from seleno-yeast per kilogram (designed mineral intake?=?113 g/cow daily). Data were analyzed using a mixed model; year and pasture were the random effects and treatment was the fixed effect. At the beginning of the calving and breeding seasons, cows supplemented with Se had greater (P?<?0.01) whole blood Se concentration (WBSe) and glutathione peroxidase activities (GSH-Px) than cows receiving no supplemental Se; cows fed seleno-yeast had greater (P?≤?0.05) WBSe than cows fed sodium selenite, but GSH-Px did not differ (P?≥?0.25) between the two sources. At birth and near peak lactation (late May), calves from cows supplemented with Se had greater (P?<?0.01) WBSe than calves from cows fed no Se and calves from cows fed seleno-yeast had greater (P?≤?0.01) WBSe and GSH-Px than calves from cows fed sodium selenite. Thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and the T4:T3 ratio in calves did not differ among treatments (P?≥?0.35). At birth, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) was greater (P?=?0.02) in calves nursing cows with no supplemental Se than in ones with supplemental Se; in calves nursing cows with supplemental sodium selenite, IGF-1 did not differ (P?=?0.96) from ones offered supplemental seleno-yeast. Selenium supplementation of gestating beef cows benefited cows and calves by increasing WBSe and GSH-Px. The use of seleno-yeast as a Se supplement compared to sodium selenite increased the WBSe of both cows and their calves without affecting the T4 to T3 conversion or IGF-1 concentrations.  相似文献

The effects of different concentrations of selenite (2–30 μM) and selenate (2–60 μM) on biomass production, leaf area, and concentrations of photosynthetic pigments in lettuce plants were investigated. On the basis of the obtained results, the threshold of toxicity for the selenite and selenate has been designated. The toxicity thresholds for selenite and selenate were determined at concentrations of 15 and 20 μM, respectively. Next, four selenium (Se) concentrations (2, 4, 6 or 15 μM), below or near the toxicity boundary, have been selected for the lettuce biofortification experiment. In the biofortified plants, the oxidant status (levels of lipid peroxidation and H2O2 concentrations), as well as Se and sulphur (S) accumulation were analysed. In the edible parts of the lettuce, the Se concentration was higher for selenate presence compared to selenite; however, this difference was not as obvious as it was noted in the case of the roots, where selenite application caused the high accumulation of Se. An application of 15 μM Se as selenite caused a decline in the biomass and an intensification of prooxidative processes in the plant’s tissues and as toxic should be excluded from further biofortification experiments. These results indicate that an application of either selenate or selenite to the nutrient solution at concentrations below 15 μM can be used for biofortification of lettuce with Se, evoking better plant growth and not inducing significant changes in the oxidant status, the concentration of assimilation pigments and S accumulation.  相似文献
