Scales from Lough Neagh pollan display a large number of checks, making age determination difficult. Sclerite counts showed that an annual check is formed on scales in May and a second accessory check in most young fish in October. The method of ageing from scales was supported by inspection of length-frequency plots and by following the growth of pollan in their first 2 years of life. The body-scale relationship was curvilinear. Back-calculation showed that pollan of both sexes attain a fork length of 29 cm in 5 years (1 ∞=28.9 cm; k = 0.65; l 0= -0.06 year). There is no evidence that annual growth rates have changed since 1965. Possible environmental causes of scale check formation are discussed.  相似文献

The Pacific jack Caranx caninus is a common species fished by artisanal fishermen off the coast of Colima, México. During 2002, monthly samples of morphometric data and otoliths were taken to determine age and growth. Seven age groups were identified. The highest growth, 14.4 cm, takes place during the first year of life. During the second year, C caninus grows 11.76 cm; the third year 9.61 cm; the fourth 7.85 cm; the fifth 6.41 cm and sixth year 5.24 cm. The constants of von Bertalanffy's growth equation were: L(infinity) = 83.26 cm, W(infinity) = 18.138 g, K = 0.202, t(0) = -0.283 and A(0.95) = 15 years. Growth curves of other species of the same genus were calculated in order to compare them with the one obtained in the present work. The gonadosomatic index presented higher values during November and May. The periods of more intensive feeding are from August to February.  相似文献

Annual rings on the first dorsal spine were used to determine the age and growth of the catfish, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Lacépède), in the Lagos Lagoon, Nigeria. From back-calculations, it was found that the mean total length ofthe species when the first annulus was formed was 18.5 cm, 32.6 cm for second annulus, 43.5 cm for the third annulus and 53.9 cm for the fourth annulus. It was shown that this species in the Lagos Lagoon attained four years of age and that the fastest growth in length was achieved during the first year of life. Thereafter, increase in length gradually decreased with age. The relationship between the body length and dorsal spine radius was shown to be linear and highly correlated.  相似文献

In our effort to give some information which investigates autecological parameters for southern barbel, a study of age, growth and reproduction for this species was carried out in the Rentina stream, northeastern Greece. The length-weight relationship can be described by the equations W = 0.008 L3.159 and W = 0.0583 L2.428 for females and males, respectively (W = body weight in g, L = fork length in cm). The most rapid growth in length occured during the first year of life (7.3 cm) after which growth decreased and remained constant at approximately 3.4 cm per year. The average density and biomass were 0.25 fish. m-2 and 9.35 g. m-2, respectively. The southern barbel becomes sexualy mature at the second year of life for both sexes. The mean absolute fecundity was 9119 ± 322 eggs with mean diameter 1.2 ± 0.2 mm. Spawning of this species, in the study area, occurs in June at mean temperature 19°C.  相似文献

In a population of Gasterosteus aculeatus living in an infertile, upland lake, the fish bred at the age of one year and few survived to breed again. The highest growth rates were achieved in the first month of life, but in comparison with other populations of G. aculeatus growth was slow during the autumn and ceased during the winter. But in spring and early summer, there was a spurt in the growth rate.
Laboratory studies provided regression models for the prediction of the rate of food consumption from measurements of growth. The estimates of the consumption rate indicated the effect of the growth in body size and seasonal variations during the first year of life. It was estimated that a fish of mean length in the population consumed 3150 mg of food in a year in which it grew from 65.8 to 552.0 mg, with an overall gross growth efficiency of 15.4%.
The study illustrated the integration of laboratory and field studies to obtain reasonable estimates of the rate of food consumption by fish throughout their first year of life.  相似文献

22 girls with Turner syndrome aged 10.8 +/- 2.4 years with bone age 8.58 +/- 1.32 years, randomized in two groups, were treated for 3 years with either growth hormone (GH), 0.1 U/kg daily (group A), or GH, 0.1 U/kg, plus oxandrolone, 0.06 mg/kg (group B). This resulted in a sharp increase in growth rate for the first year of treatment, followed in the second and third years by a growth rate near to the normal mean for age. The growth velocity was better in group B, the difference being significant during the first year only. After 3 years, the predicted adult height had increased by 2.1 cm as a mean in group A and by 4.5 cm in group B, with important individual variations, resulting in a gain of at least 3 cm in 3/10 patients of group A and 9/12 of group B. No metabolic or other side effects occurred. These 3-year data confirm that GH improves the predictable height in Turner girls. They suggest that it may be useful for at least 3 years and that adding a small dose of oxandrolone for 2 years in girls aged more than 8 years could be of good practice. However, earlier and more protracted treatment with GH has to be studied with the hope to better improve the predictable adult height.  相似文献

The scales of Tilapia mossambica Peters * from Lake Sibaya show clear rings formed by broken, widely-spaced circuli in the anterior field. In order to determine the rate and time of scale ring formation, the number of circuli in the marginal increment was determined. Five scales from the pectoral region of 2223 fishes caught at regular intervals over two years were examined. When plotted as histograms, the number of circuli in the marginal increment showed a sharp movement to the left in September–October and again in January, indicating that the rings were formed during these months in the majority of fish examined. Pre- and postbreeding feeding migrations, and increases in condition factor, were associated with scale ring formation. Otoliths and opercula were also examined for age determination. Annual length increments were calculated for 450 T. mossambica collected throughout the year, and growth curves plotted. T. mossambica from Sibaya reach maturity after one year at a standard length of about 8 cm in females, and after two years at 10 cm in males. The breeding population had a standard length mode of 11–12 cm in females and 17 cm in males. The maximum final size was about 24 cm.  相似文献

Vertebrae from 250 Bagrus meridionalis from the southern end of Lake Malawi were used for age and growth determinations. There is a close correlation between ages determined from length frequency data and ages obtained by back-calculation of the lengths when vertebral rings arc laid down. The rings are laid down annually, probably during the breeding season. Females grow slightly faster than males, the difference being in the order of 1–2 cm/year in the early stages. Recruitment to the trawl fishery takes place in the third year of life. Both sexes breed for the first time at the end of their fourth year. There is a much greater mortality in the male population after 40 cm in length.  相似文献

There is a broad knowledge of the growth andreproduction of Trachurus trachurus, although important gaps still exist. Horsemackerel are a long-lived species, reaching upto 40 years of age. They have isometric growth, although the alometric parameter b mayvary throughout the year and in relation tolatitude. Growth to age 3 is rapid compared toslower growth later in life. Phenomena ofdensity dependent growth have been observed inthe northeast Atlantic. Horse mackerel are anasynchronous species. The following stages ofatresia have been validated in horse mackerel:alpha, beta, and delta. The transition infemales from the spawning state to postspawning is very fast. The spawning fraction inhorse mackerel is estimated to be between 8.3%and 20.9%. Horse mackerel have a long spawningseason (up to 8 months), which varies accordingto geography. Length at first maturity isbetween 16 and 25 cm, most commonly around21 cm. Males mature at a slightly smallerlength than females. The age at first maturityfor females has been estimated to range from 2to 4 years, depending on the geography. Batchfecundity has been estimated to range between172–209 oocytes per gram-female-weight. Femalespawning lasts between 65 and 94 days. Anindividual female can release from 5 to 16batches during the spawning period. Theestimated potential annual relative fecundityranges from 1040 to 3280 oocytes pergram-female-weight.  相似文献

Morphometrics and growth of the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis), which inhabits a freshwater lake in Finland were studied using data from 344 carcasses. This study presents the first detailed information on ringed seal pup growth and body condition from birth to the age of one year. Newborn pups were on average 68 cm long and weighed 5 kg. Pups attained the majority of their first year growth during the nursing period. Body condition and growth declined after weaning, but pups recovered from postweaning nutritional deprivation at the age of 8 mo. The seals achieved their maximum body length, girth, and mandible size around the age of 4 yr, and asymptotic body mass two years later. Baculum growth indicated that males reached sexual maturity at age 5–6 yr. The Saimaa ringed seals' asymptotic body length and mass were 132 cm and 59 kg, respectively, which is similar to medium sized marine ringed seals. Saimaa ringed seals' survival to adulthood is extremely low due to high bycatch mortality; furthermore climate change may hamper pup growth and elevate mortality. Therefore we recommend continuation of fishing closures to improve pup survival.  相似文献

Livistona eastonii on the Mitchell Plateau of northern Western Australia forms a dense, multi-aged understorey to an open eucalypt woodland. The palm population has the characteristics of a species that comprises a climax vegetation type. Reproduction of the palm appears to have been stimulated in recent years, perhaps by annual burning. The present palm population has been reproducing throughout its life with only minor though significant fluctuations. The average maximum age is estimated to be about 280 years, based on an average increment of 2.85 cm/year for plants taller than 30 cm and 1.15 cm/year for the first 30 cm of height growth. Exceptionally tall plants of 21 m (Gardner 1923) and 10.4 in (Beard 1976) may be about 720 years and 360 years old respectively.  相似文献

Among all validation methods of age determination in fish, release of known age and marked specimens gives the most reliable information. We carried out a tag-recapture experiment on Notothenia rossii at Potter Cove, to validate, for first time for this species using this method, the principle of annual deposition of an annulus in scales and otoliths. Of 132 juvenile specimens (TL = 22.1–38.1 cm) tagged and released in successive years from 2004 to 2010, 7 were recaptured at the same site after periods of 1–13 months. In scales of five specimens recovered after 10–13 months, one extra annulus was laid down, exhibiting an additional winter zone of closely spaced sclerites. Consistently, the same analysis in two individuals marked and recaptured during the same summer, after 1–3 months at liberty, did not show the deposition of an additional annulus. All the fish tagged or recaptured during the experiment period (December to March) showed in their scales an edge zone of widely spaced sclerites, in agreement with the known pattern of growth in summer. Likewise, an analysis in selected specimens showed good consistency between the numbers of sclerites deposited in scales and the time of fish release. The comparative analysis between scales taken at recapture and otoliths of the same individual allowed a simultaneous counting of the annuli with complete correspondence. The growth in length of fish ranged from 0.5 to 6.1 cm, depending on the time of release.  相似文献

The dynamics of the shell convolution diameter with regard to the mollusk age was studied for the river snail Viviparus viviparus. It was found that the diameter of the first (juvenile) convolution remained constant during the ontogenetic development. A weak, but significant increase in the diameter of the second and the third shell convolutions (also juvenile) was observed during the first year of postembryonic development. The forth and the fifth shell convolutions were formed during the first year of mollusk life after hatching; their diameters increased gradually during the second year, and remained constant for the remainder of the life span.  相似文献

The length-weight relationship of a sample of 233 roach ( Rutilus rutilus ) can be described by the following equations: y =0·0356 x 3·405 and y =0·0215 ×3·606 for males and females respectively. In both equations y equals the body weight in grams and × is the standard length in centimetres. The average condition factor K was 2·01 with a range of 1·71 to 2·26. The roach's span of life was 13 years for both sexes. The growth increment is greater during the first year of life (about 56 mm), decreasing to approximately 17 mm at the end of the sixth year of life and then becoming constant at about 12 mm per year. Roach become sexually mature at age 1 + for males and one year later for females. The mean absolute fecundity was 9294 eggs; with a range from 920 to 32 810. The growth of the gonads is related to the age of the fish. Spawning occurs during the first half of April, at a mean water temperature of 10° C.  相似文献

The eel goby Taenioides cirratus (Blyth, 1,860) is a small fish inhabits muddy bottoms of brackish-water in the Indo-West Pacific. It has invaded many inland freshwater lakes in China, such as the Chaohu Lake, Gaoyou Lake and Nansi Lake, and its population increased rapidly in these freshwater lakes in recent years. The age, growth and reproductive traits of T. cirratus invading the Chaohu Lake were studied. A total of 482 specimens (210 females, 204 males and 68 juveniles) with total length (TL) ranging from 9.4 to 20.6 cm were collected using the benthic fyke nets at monthly intervals from March 2018 to February 2019. The sagittal otolith was used for age determination. Monthly variation of marginal increment ratio indicated that the annual forming of opaque band on sagittal otolith was completed during March and April. For both sexes, only four (from 0+ to 3+ years) age groups were observed and 1+ and 2+ years age individuals dominated the population. Back calculated length at age showed males grew faster than females. Both sexes reached maturity at 1+ year age and the TL at first maturity (TL50) was 12.6 cm for females and 11.9 cm for males. Monthly variation of gonado-somatic index indicated that the spawning occurred from May to August. The fecundity ranged from 967 ova to 5,114 ova, with a mean of 3,205 ova. Our study provides a comprehensive data on the key life history traits of T. cirratus for the first time.  相似文献

A review of age of maturity in herbaceous, polycarpic perennials found that the most common year of earliest maturity for wild and cultivated conditions was the second year of life, followed by the first year and then the third year. A comparison of age of maturity in wild and cultivated conditions for individual taxa confirmed the assumption that perennials generally do not mature sooner in the wild than in cultivation. This validated use of the pattern for maturity in cultivation (second year or later) against which to judge that for maturity in the wild. For plants of the same age of maturity, those with clonal growth had longer life spans than did those with little or no clonal growth. This difference in life span was more pronounced for plants of first- and second-year maturity than it was for those of later maturity. Herbaceous, polycarpic perennials in the wild generally were either short-lived with first-year maturity or long-lived with later maturity. These results were also true for nonclonal taxa only. For application to the real world, theoretical plant-population models must take these results into account.  相似文献

Summary Mark and recapture studies were carried out for three and a half years on a population of Caiman c. crocodilus inhabiting a savanna lagoon system in the Venezuelan Guayana. Sub-adult and adult caimans migrated from permanent lagoon refuges to temporary lagoons during the wet season. A distinct homing response by artificially displaced caimans was observed. The wet season was the most significant time of the year for both feeding and growth. It was estimated that caimans take 6 years to reach a size of 97 cm. Thereafter the growth rate was variable. During a dry year there was little growth, but during a wet year a large caiman could increase in length by up to 10 cm.During the first 18 months of life, young caimans remained near the nest site. Older caimans dispersed and competed for territories which resulted in a high incidence of damage, particularly to the tails, as a result of intraspecific fighting.  相似文献

Scales and whole otoliths were read for age determination in early stages of Notothenia rossii caught in Potter Cove, South Shetland Islands, in summer seasons 2003–2006 and 2008. The sample comprised blue-phase pelagic fingerlings of 7.0–7.6 cm (TL) of age group 0 year and demersal brown-phase fingerlings/juveniles of 8.5–20.9 cm and predominant age groups 1–2 years. Counting of sclerites facilitated the interpretation of the rings, particularly in the central scale. To clarify two previous issues of controversy, we deduce that the duration of the offshore pelagic blue-phase fingerling stage is less than one year before migration to the nearshore demersal habitat. Furthermore, the first well-defined ring in scales corresponded to the first annulus, while a contiguous ring was a secondary ring sometimes deposited after the first winter during the second year of life, attributable to a shift of habitat from pelagic to demersal. A von Bertalanffy growth curve was computed by combining age/length data of the juvenile phase of N. rossii from this and a previous study at Potter Cove with literature data from the offshore adult population, resulting in the following equation: Lt = 8 6. 9  ( 1- \texte - 0. 0 9 1 (t - 0. 6 6 8 ) ) L_{t} = 8 6. 9 \,\left( { 1- {\text{e}}^{{ - 0. 0 9 1 (t - 0. 6 6 8 )}} } \right) .  相似文献

Abstract

Interracial children of white mothers and black fathers were compared to interracial children of black mothers and white fathers on growth rates during the first year of life. Results indicate that interracial children of white mothers gained less weight between birth and four months of age than did interracial children of black mothers or monoracial black or white children. By one year of age, catch‐up growth appears to have occurred, and there is little evidence for lasting effects of the growth retardation during the first four months of life.  相似文献
