Abstract: Earlier reports on nonneural cells have shown that the normally inner plasma membrane lipid, phosphatidylserine (PS), flip-flops out during the early stages of apoptosis, whereas DNA laddering and plasma membrane permeabilization occur during the late stages. In this study, the applicability of these parameters to CNS-derived neuronal cells was tested using hippocampal HN2-5, cells that undergo apoptosis under anoxia. Because such insults on unsynchronized cells, e.g., undifferentiated HN2-5 cells, result in both early and late apoptotic cells, we mechanically separated these cells into three fractions containing (a) cells that had completely detached during anoxia, (b) cells that remained weakly attached to the tissue culture dish and, once detached by trituration in serum-containing medium, did not reattach, and (c) cells that reattached in 2–3 h. Fractions a and b contained cells that showed pronounced DNA laddering, whereas cells in fraction c did not show any DNA laddering. Double staining with fluorescein isothiocyanate-annexin V (which binds to PS) and propidium iodide (which stains the DNA in cells with a permeable cell membrane) revealed that all cells in fraction a had a permeable cell membrane (propidium iodide-positive) and PS molecules in the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane (fluorescein isothiocyanate-annexin V-positive). By contrast, fractions b and c contained cells with no externalized PS molecules. Cells in fractions a–c also showed, respectively, 50-, 21-, and 5.5-fold higher caspase-3 (CPP32) activity than that in healthy control cells. All these results show that fraction a contained late apoptotic cells, which also had the highest CPP32 activity; cells in fraction b were at an intermediate stage, when DNA laddering had already occurred; and fraction c contained very early apoptotic cells, in which no DNA laddering had yet occurred. Therefore, in the neuronal HN2-5 cells, externalization of PS occurs only during the final stages of apoptosis when the cells have completely lost their adhesion properties. Further experiments showed that ameboid microglial cells isolated from neonatal mouse brain phagocytosed only the cells in fraction a. These results show that in CNS-derived HN2-5 cells, (a) PS externalization is a late apoptotic event and is concomitant with a complete loss of surface adhesion of the apoptotic cells and (b) PS externalization is crucial for microglial recognition and phagocytosis of the apoptotic HN2-5 cells. Thus, PS externalization could be causally linked to the final detachment of apoptotic neuronal cells, which in turn prepares them for rapid phagocytosis by microglia.  相似文献

We previously isolated a monoclonal antibody named PH2 that inhibits phosphatidylserine-mediated phagocytosis of apoptotic cells by macrophages. We report here the identification of the cognate antigen. A protein bound by PH2 in Western blotting was identified as the 170-kDa subunit of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3 p170/eIF3a). When eIF3a was expressed in a culture cell line as a protein fused to green fluorescence protein, the fusion protein was detected at the cell surface only after the induction of apoptosis. The same phenomenon was seen when the localization of endogenous eIF3a was determined using anti-eIF3a antibody, and eIF3a seemed to be partially degraded during apoptosis. Furthermore, bacterially expressed N-terminal half of eIF3a fused to glutathione S-transferase bound to the surface of macrophages and inhibited phagocytosis of apoptotic cells by macrophages when it was added to phagocytosis reactions. These results collectively suggest that eIF3a translocates to the cell surface upon apoptosis, probably after partial degradation, and bridges apoptotic cells and macrophages to enhance phagocytosis.  相似文献

The most widely used histochemical marker of apoptosis (in situend labeling, TUNEL) detects both apoptotic and necrotic cells and evaluates only late stages of apoptosis. Hence, a specific and sensitive cellular marker of apoptosis is needed to determine the role of apoptotic death in biology and pathology. The present study describes a novel immunohistochemical procedure for the staining of apoptotic cells using a monoclonal antibody (MAb) to single-stranded DNA. This MAb stained all cells with the morphology typical of apoptosis in etoposide-treated HL-60, MOLT-4, and R9 cell cultures, in which apoptosis was accompanied by high, moderate, and low levels of internucleosomal DNA fragmentation, respectively. TUNEL stained all apoptotic cells in HL-60 cultures, nearly 60% of apoptotic cells in MOLT-4 cultures, and only 14% of apoptotic cells in R9 cultures. Apoptotic R9 cells, which progressed into secondary necrosis, retained MAb staining and became TUNEL-positive. Necrotic cells in MOLT-4 cultures treated with sodium azide were stained by TUNEL, but were negative for MAb staining. All floating cells at a late stage of apoptosis in MDA-MB-468 cultures treated with cisplatin were stained by both MAb and TUNEL. However, among adherent cells in the early stages of apoptosis, MAb stained nearly 20 times more cells than TUNEL. In histological sections of human tumor xenografts, MAb detected clusters of apoptotic cells in viable tumor tissue, but did not stain cells in areas of central ischemic necrosis. In contrast, TUNEL stained nuclei in necrotic areas. Thus, MAb to single-stranded DNA is a specific and sensitive cellular marker of apoptosis, which differentiates between apoptosis and necrosis and detects cells in the early stages of apoptosis.  相似文献

Inefficient clearance of apoptotic cells by macrophages may cause an advanced stage of apoptosis, late apoptosis. Coculturing of macrophages with late apoptotic cells leads to high production of CXC-chemokine, IL-8, or MIP-2, a murine homologue of IL-8. However, the signaling mechanism underlying the production remains largely unknown. In this study, we examined the MAP kinase activation on coculturing of macrophages with late apoptotic cells. Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)1/2, but not p38 or c-Jun N-terminal kinase, was phosphorylated as early as 5 min after interaction of macrophages with late apoptotic cells. We then examined whether or not ERK activation is involved in the production of MIP-2 by employing selective inhibitors for MAP kinase kinase 1/2, PD98059, and U0126. These inhibitors suppressed the production of MIP-2 by macrophages at the protein and mRNA levels, whereas they did not suppress phagocytosis of late apoptotic cells, as judged on confocal microscopy. These results suggest that activation of ERK is involved in the production of MIP-2 on coculturing of macrophages with late apoptotic cells.  相似文献

Apoptotic cell phagocytosis is initiated through the specific interaction between markers for phagocytosis present at the surface of targets and their receptors of phagocytes. Although many molecules have been proposed to be phagocytosis markers and receptors in mammals, information as to the identity of those molecules is limited for invertebrate animals. Calreticulin, a molecular chaperone that functions in the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum, was recently reported to be the second general marker, the membrane phospholipid phosphatidylserine being the first, for mammalian apoptotic cells to be recognized by phagocytes. We here asked whether or not calreticulin serves as a marker for phagocytosis in Drosophila. Phagocytosis of apoptotic S2 cells by Drosophila hemocyte-derived l(2)mbn cells, which we previously showed to occur independent of phosphatidylserine, was inhibited by the addition of anti-calreticulin antibody. This inhibition was observed when the target cells, but not phagocytes, were pre-incubated with the antibody. In addition, RNA interference-mediated reduction of calreticulin expression in apoptotic S2 cells, but not in l(2)mbn cells, reduced the level of phagocytosis. An immunocytochemical analysis revealed that calreticulin is widely distributed at the surface of viable S2 cells. After the induction of apoptosis, cell surface calreticulin seemed to form aggregates, with no change in its amount. Furthermore, in embryos of a mutant Drosophila strain that expresses calreticulin at a reduced level, the level of phagocytosis of apoptotic cells was about a half of that observed in embryos of a wild-type strain. These results collectively indicate that calreticulin is the first molecule to be identified as a marker for phagocytosis of apoptotic cells by Drosophila phagocytes.  相似文献

Since free apoptotic cells are not detected in normal tissues, it is generally believed that apoptotic cells are removed as soon as they appear in vivo. A fluorescent derivative of phosphatidylserine, 1-palmitoyl-2-[6-[(7-nitro-2-1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl)amino]hexanoyl]-sn-glycero-3-phospho-L-serine (NBD-PS) is known to be incorporated into living cells, and thereafter gradually absorbed into either fatty acid-free bovine serum albumin or fetal calf serum from the outer leaflet of the cell membrane. When thymocytes were irradiated with X-ray and cultured in the presence of NBD-PS, cells became less fluorescent as apoptosis advanced, but early apoptotic cells were still positive for NBD-PS. We then co-cultured such early apoptotic thymocytes with resident peritoneal macrophages. Upon examination under a time-lapse fluorescence microscope, it was found that the attachment of early apoptotic cells to macrophages does not cause rapid phagocytosis, as compared with late apoptotic cells, suggesting the possibility that, in contrast to the widely held view, early apoptotic cells may not be quickly removed by phagocytes in vivo.  相似文献

Neutrophils undergo constitutive death by apoptosis, leading to safe nonphlogistic phagocytosis and clearance by macrophages. Recent work has shown that before secondary necrosis, neutrophils exhibiting classical features of apoptosis can progress to a morphologically defined late apoptotic state. However, whether such neutrophils could be safely cleared was unknown. We now report that human late apoptotic neutrophils could be purified from cultured neutrophil populations undergoing constitutive death and were subsequently ingested by human monocyte-derived macrophages by serum-independent mechanisms that did not trigger the release of IL-8 or TNF-alpha. Such ingestion was specifically inhibited by Abs to thrombospondin-1 and the alpha(v)beta(3) vitronectin receptor. Murine bone marrow-derived macrophage phagocytosis of late and early apoptotic neutrophils occurred by similar mechanisms, proceeding with the same efficiency as that observed for wild-type controls when macrophages from [alpha(m)](-/-) or [beta(2)](-/-) mice were used. We conclude that specific nonphlogistic, beta(2) integrin-independent mechanisms involving thrombospondin-1 and alpha(v)beta(3) allow macrophages to ingest late apoptotic neutrophils without eliciting inflammatory cytokine secretion.  相似文献

Morphologically, apoptotic cells are characterized by highly condensed membrane blebbing and formation of apoptotic bodies. Recently, we reported that apoptosis precedes necrosis in a fish cell line infected with infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). In the present study, we tested the possibility that nontypical apoptosis is a component of IPNV-induced fish cell death. A variant type of green fluorescent protein (EGFP) was expressed in a fish cell line such that EGFP served as a protein marker for visualizing dynamic apoptotic cell morphological changes and for tracing membrane integrity changes during IPNV infection. Direct morphological changes were visualized by fluorescence microscopy by EGFP in living cells infected with IPNV. The nontypical apoptotic morphological change stage occurred during the pre-late stage (6 to 7 h postinfection). Nontypical apoptotic features, including highly condensed membrane blebbing, occurred during the middle apoptotic stage. At the pre-late apoptotic stage, membrane vesicles quickly formed, blebbed, and were finally pinched off from the cell membrane. At the same time, at this pre-late apoptotic stage, apoptotic cells formed unique small holes in their membranes that ranged from 0.39 to 0.78 micrometer according to examination by scanning electron microscopy and immunoelectron microscopy. Quantitation of the intra- and extracellular release of EGFP by CHSE-214-EGFP cells after IPNV infection was done by Western blotting and fluorometry. Membrane integrity was quickly lost during the late apoptotic stage (after 8 h postinfection), and morphological change and membrane integrity loss could be prevented and blocked by treatment with apoptosis inhibitors such as cycloheximide, genistein, and EDTA before IPNV infection. Together, these findings show the apoptotic features at the onset of pathology in host cells (early and middle apoptotic stages), followed secondarily by nontypical apoptosis (pre-late apoptotic stage) and then by postapoptotic necrosis (late apoptotic stage), of a fish cell line. Our results demonstrate that nontypical apoptosis is a component of IPNV-induced fish cell death.  相似文献

Some cultured cell lines undergo typical apoptosis upon infection with influenza virus. However, the release of replicated virus into the culture medium does not change when apoptosis is inhibited. Since apoptotic cells are heterophagically eliminated at early stages of the apoptosis pathway, we anticipated that the coexistence of phagocytic cells with virus-infected cells affects the extent of virus growth. When influenza A virus-infected HeLa cells were mixed with activated mouse peritoneal macrophages, efficient phagocytosis, which was abrogated in the presence of a caspase inhibitor, occurred. At the same time, the release of virus into the culture medium was completely inhibited, and this required direct contact between virus-infected cells and macrophages. Furthermore, an immunoelectron microscopic analysis detected influenza virus particles associated with phagosome-like structures within macrophages. These results indicate that apoptosis-dependent phagocytosis of virus-infected cells may lead to direct elimination of the pathogen.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Much attention is being paid to the biologic effects of magnetic fields (MFs). Although MFs enhance tumorigenesis, they are neither mutagenic nor tumorigenic. The mechanism of their tumorigenic effect has not been elucidated. METHODS: To investigate the effect of MFs on apoptosis in HL-60 cells, we exposed the cells to static MFs of 6 mT generated by a magnetic disk of known intensity. Apoptosis was triggered by the DNA topoisomerase I inhibitor, camptothecin (CPT). Activation of caspases in situ using the fluorochrome-labeled inhibitor (FLICA) method and determination of plasma membrane integrity by excluding propidium iodide (PI) were measured by both laser scanning cytometry (LSC) and flow cytometry (FC). LSC and FC identified cells at three sequential stages of their demise: early apoptosis (cells with activated caspases and PI negative); late apoptosis (cells with activated caspases but unable to exclude PI); secondary necrosis (cells with apoptotic morphology no longer stained with FLICA, not excluding PI). RESULTS: MF alone did not induce any apoptogenic or necrogenic effect. CPT exposure led to the sequential appearance of apoptotic cells. In the presence of CPT and MF, the overall proportion of cells undergoing apoptosis was not significantly changed. However, we consistently observed a significant increase in the frequency of late apoptotic/necrotic cells when compared with samples treated with CPT alone (P < 0.001), as well as a decrease in the percentage of early apoptotic cells (P = 0.013). The data obtained by FC and LSC were consistent with each other, showing a similar phenomenon. CONCLUSION: Whereas MF alone or with CPT did not affect overall cell viability, it accelerated the rate of cell transition from apoptosis to secondary necrosis after induction of apoptosis by the DNA-damaging agent, CPT. Modulation of the kinetics of the transition from apoptosis to secondary necrosis by MF in vivo may play a role in inflammation and tumorigenesis.  相似文献

The behaviour of plasma membrane was studied in UV-treated cells to investigate its involvement in apoptosis. It was studied in HL60 cells, in which DNA oligonucleosomic cleavage occurs, and in Molt-4 cells, which are characterised by a different fragmentation pattern. During the early stages of apoptosis, a membrane lipid rearrangement occurs, which involves phosphatidylserine translocation from the inner to the outer leaflet. This molecular alteration was investigated by annexin V-FITC binding, analysed by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. It was correlated with transmission electron microscopy, subdiploid peak appearance and DNA fragmentation. Our data indicate that the plasma membrane represents an early apoptotic target, even if its alterations are not detectable by ultrastructural analysis, which indicates its good preservation until late apoptotic stages. In addition, the study of apoptotic cells with absent or inactivated endonuclease demonstrates the independence of this membrane mechanism from nuclear activity. Accepted: 16 April 1998  相似文献

Background information. Treatment of cells with UVC radiation leads to the formation of DNA cross‐links which, if not repaired, can lead to apoptosis. γ‐H2AX and cleaved caspase 3 are proteins formed during UVC‐induced DNA damage and apoptosis respectively. The present study sets out to identify early morphological markers of apoptosis using a new method of correlative microscopy, ILEM (integrated laser electron microscopy). Cleaved caspase 3 and γ‐H2AX were immunofluorescently labelled to mark the cells of interest. These cells were subsequently searched in the fluorescence mode of the ILEM and further analysed at high resolution with TEM (transmission electron microscopy). Results. Following the treatment of HUVECs (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) with UVC radiation, in the majority of the cells γ‐H2AX was formed, whereas only in a subset of cells caspase 3 was activated. In severely damaged cells with high levels of γ‐H2AX a round, electron‐dense nuclear structure was found, which was hitherto not identified in UV‐stressed cells. This structure exists only in nuclei of cells containing cleaved caspase 3 and is present during all stages of the apoptotic process. Energy‐loss imaging showed that the nuclear structure accumulates phosphorus, indicating that it is rich in nucleic acids. Because the nuclear structure did not label for DNA and was not affected by regressive EDTA treatment, it is suggested that the UV‐induced nuclear structure contains a high amount of RNA. Conclusions. Because the UV‐induced nuclear structure was only found in cells labelled for cleaved caspase 3 it is proposed as an electron microscopic marker for all stages of apoptosis. Such a marker will especially facilitate the screening for early apoptotic cells, which lack the well‐known hallmarks of apoptosis within a cell population. It also raises new questions on the mechanisms involved in the UV‐induced apoptotic pathway.  相似文献

An early event in apoptosis is exposure of phosphatidylserine, an aminophospholipid normally present in the inner leaflet of the plasma membranes, at the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane facing the extracellular space. Annexin V (Anx-V) is a 35-kDa protein with high affinity for phosphatidylserine, which can be applied to detect apoptosis. We injected biotin-labelled Anx-V intravenously in adult mice and examined the tissue distribution of Anx-V-labelled cells in dental and periodontal tissues using ABC-peroxidase histochemistry. In the continuously erupting incisors, strong and frequent immunostaining was observed in transitional stage and late maturation stage ameloblasts with less frequent staining in preameloblasts. Frequency of staining in odontoblasts and pulp cells was low but increased slightly at older stages of dentinogenesis. Labelling was also seen in phagocytic or phagocytic-like cells in the enamel organ and pulp. A positive staining was furthermore found in fibroblasts of the periodontal ligament in continuously erupting incisors and in fully erupted molar teeth. Staining intensity and the number of positive cells were enhanced by antigen retrieval using high-pressure cooking. We conclude that Anx-V-biotin labels dental cells in early stages of cell death and indirectly cells that have ingested labelled apoptotic cells during the course of the experiment. The data confirm that during amelogenesis most cell death occurs in transitional stage and late maturation stage ameloblasts. Thus, labelling with Anx-V is a useful marker for studying cell death and the dynamics of clearance of apoptotic cells during tooth development.  相似文献

An increasing number of methods are being described to detect apoptotic cells. However, attempts to detect apoptotic cells in clinical samples are rarely successful. A hypothesis is that apoptotic cells are cleared from the circulation by phagocytosis before they become detectable by conventional morphological or cytometric methods. Using LR73 adhering cells as phagocytes in a model ofin vitrophagocytosis, we found that phagocytosis of daunorubicin (DNR)-treated U937, HL60, or K562 leukemia cell lines occurred prior to phosphatidylserine externalization, DNA hydrolysis, chromatin condensation, nuclear fragmentation, or mitochondrial potential alteration. Moreover DNR-treated K562 cells were eliminated by phagocytes while apoptosis was never observed by any of the above methods. By contrast, using a fluorometric batch analysis assay to detect caspase activity in ceramide- or DNR-treated cells (fluorogenic substrate for caspase), we found that caspase activity increased in apoptosis-committed cells before they were detected by flow cytometry or recognized by phagocytes. Similarly a caspase activity increase was detected in circulating mononuclear cells of leukemic patients 15 h after the beginning of anthracyclin treatment. We suggest that recent findings on enzymatic events (caspase activation) occurring in the early events of apoptosis must now allow the development of new markers for apoptosis, irrespective of the morphological features or internucleosomal fragmentation which are late events in apoptosis.  相似文献

In macrophages, enzymes that synthesize or hydrolyze phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate [PI(3,4,5)P(3)] regulate Fcgamma receptor-mediated phagocytosis. Inhibition of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) or overexpression of the lipid phosphatases phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN) and Src homology 2 domain-containing inositol phosphatase (SHIP-1), which hydrolyze PI(3,4,5)P(3) to phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate and phosphatidylinositol 3,4-bisphosphate [PI(3,4)P(2)], respectively, inhibit phagocytosis in macrophages. To examine how these enzymes regulate phagosome formation, the distributions of yellow fluorescent protein (YFP) chimeras of enzymes and pleckstrin homology (PH) domains specific for their substrates and products were analyzed quantitatively. PTEN-YFP did not localize to phagosomes, suggesting that PTEN regulates phagocytosis globally within the macrophage. SHIP1-YFP and p85-YFP were recruited to forming phagosomes. SHIP1-YFP sequestered to the leading edge and dissociated from phagocytic cups earlier than did p85-cyan fluorescent protein, indicating that SHIP-1 inhibitory activities are restricted to the early stages of phagocytosis. PH domain chimeras indicated that early during phagocytosis, PI(3,4,5)P(3) was slightly more abundant than PI(3,4)P(2) at the leading edge of the forming cup. These results support a model in which phagosomal PI3K generates PI(3,4,5)P(3) necessary for later stages of phagocytosis, PTEN determines whether those late stages can occur, and SHIP-1 regulates when and where they occur by transiently suppressing PI(3,4,5)P(3)-dependent activities necessary for completion of phagocytosis.  相似文献

It is generally believed that apoptosis is not associated with inflammation. However, we have found that phagocytosis of apoptotic cells by PMA-treated THP-1 cells and human monocyte-derived macrophages led to the production of proinflammatory cytokines, notably IL-8. These macrophages were obtained either by PMA treatment or by M-CSF treatment, possibly affecting the cytokine production after phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. In order to exclude the possibility, we employed resident tissue macrophages such as Kupffer cells and alveolar macrophages in this study and examined the production of cytokines after phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Kupffer cells produced proinflammatory cytokines MIP-2 and TNF-alpha at the mRNA level. The MIP-2 protein was also detected by means of ELISA. Alveolar macrophages also produced the MIP-2 protein after phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Furthermore, apoptotic thymocytes induced a similar response by these macrophages. These findings do support the notion that macrophages are apt to produce proinflammatory cytokines after phagocytosis of apoptotic cells.  相似文献

Recombinant adenovirus encoding the VP2 gene of infectious bursal disease virus (ADV-VP2) has shown potent anti-tumour effects due to its capability of apoptotic induction in cancer cells. In the present study, human breast cancer cells MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 were infected with ADV-VP2. The expression of VP2 protein was registered 4 hours post-infection, particularly in MCF-7 cells. Multiple time-point DNA ladder assay demonstrated that ADV-VP2 infected MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells endured apoptosis as early as 8- and 12- hours post-infection, respectively. Apoptosis induction in both MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells, albeit different start points, lasted until 36-hours post-infection. The induction of apoptosis by ADV-VP2 was further shown by the TUNEL assay, with dark brown discoloration of apoptotic cells. The present study also explored the different stages of apoptosis by Annexin V/PI double staining flow cytometry quantification. Treated MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, respectively detected 25.58 ± 9.02% and 14.51 ± 3.12% of early apoptotic cells, 6.09 ± 4.06% and 77.12 ± 5.09% of late apoptotic cells. Results revealed that there were significant differences in the number of cells of both types which underwent early and late apoptosis. Significant differences were also observed among viable and apoptotic cells which have been post treated with ADV-VP2. The apoptotic effects of ADV-VP2 on human breast cancer cell lines were consistently demonstrated by three apoptosis detection methods. Therefore, a cancer vaccine basing on gene therapy could be developed in the near future using the present construct.  相似文献

Effects of agmatine on different stages of apoptotic changes in leukocytes in experimentally induced diabetes mellitus (EDM) have been investigated. The number of leukocytes that showed signs of apoptosis, both early and late, was increased in diabetic animals. The content of fragmented DNA in the leukocytes of the sick animals was elevated, the apoptotic index increased, and the balance between the content of protein regulators of apoptosis (p53 and Bcl-2) was disrupted. Agmatine had a direct corrective effect on the apoptosis of leukocytes, since it normalized the levels of p53 and Bcl-2 proteins, reduced the apoptotic index, suppressed the degradation of nuclear DNA, and reduced the number of cells with early and late signs of apoptosis.  相似文献

The phagocytosis of dying cells is an integral feature of apoptosis and necrosis. There are many receptors involved in recognition of dying cells, however, the molecular mechanisms of the scavenging process remain elusive. The activation by necrotic cells of complement is well established, however, the importance of complement in the scavenging process of apoptotic cells was just recently described. Here we report that the complement components C3 and C4 immediately bound to necrotic cells. The binding of complement was much higher for lymphocytes compared to granulocytes. In case of apoptotic cell death complement binding was a rather late event, which in lymphocytes was preceded by secondary necrosis. Taken together complement binding is an immediate early feature of necrosis and a rather late event during apoptotic cell death. We conclude that complement may serve as an opsonin for fragments of apoptotic cells that have escaped regular scavenging mechanisms.  相似文献
